For 13 years I’ve been going to the same young stylist (now she’s in her early thirties). We’ve had many conversations, but “Satan has blinded her to the glorious light of the Gospel.” (2 Corinthians 4:4)

Six weeks ago we had a bit of a break-through when I asked my stylist, whom I will call Margaret, what she found objectionable about some of the Christians she knew. She felt they were “judgmental.” I thought of how often Keller said that is how many of us come across, as moralistic and judgmental. I told her a bit about the difference between religion and the gospel and she said, “Maybe that’s my problem.”
That gave me hope!
So, yesterday, when I came for a haircut, I put the religion versus gospel chart in my purse and returned to our prior conversation. At one point I said, “Margaret, I know you are not a Christian, but I wonder if you have been put off by people who say they are Christians but actually are not. Maybe they are just religious, and don’t even know what a true Christian is.”
She said, “I wouldn’t say I wasn’t a Christian.”
That surprised me, for she has seemed so hostile to Christianity. But I realized she too defined Christianity as being a nice person.
“Margaret — I am not saying you are not a nice person. You really are both nice and caring. You are such a good mom in so many ways, and so very kind. But niceness is not what makes someone a Christian. There are nice people who are Muslims, Buddhists, and even atheists, but that doesn’t make them Christians. A Christian is someone who has an intimate relationship with Jesus. I showed her the chart below. We talked nearly the whole time. She kept me afterward while another client waited, going over this chart, and asking me more questions. Please pray for her!
I told her that even I, as a believer, can default to being “religious” or “works righteousness.” This truth, as Martin Luther says, needs to be pounded into our hearts, for the gospel is so slippery. I’m eager to do this with you, for it is the secret of true Christianity. How different is Jesus than Mohammed, Buddha, or any religious leader, for He said
I AM the Vine and you are the branches.

Wow Dee! Such a breakthrough with your stylist! I love that chart from Keller. He was brilliant.
I had an answer to a prayer from several weeks ago. Many of you know the story of our daughter and grands. Our daughter puts a great strain on our household, to the point that I just wish she would go away. I know many cannot relate to that, as it sounds terrible. Please don’t judge. Our family has been through the “wringer” with her. She is not mentally all there. A few weeks ago I asked God to move in her life; to help her figure out what she needs to do to move on from our house, so that peace could fill the place and all parties would be happy. This week, she and her husband (another long story that is exasperating) found an apartment far away, that I believe they are planning to move to in the next few months! I can’t believe it. It could mean so much for everyone. Peace, happiness, no more strife. Thank you Lord Jesus.
I do not judge you at all. I think you have been amazing, and this is going to bring peace. I have often prayed “Please change this person’s heart or move them away.” There is a proverb about casting out the dissenter in order to have peace. Big answer to prayer!

We have to be so careful in what we say, how we say it, what we do and even the way we do it. People, unbelievers, are watching us to see how we act. They don’t know that a true Christian can still mess up and act worldly. Dee your persistence with your hairdresser is testimony to your life with Christ. You didn’t point fingers, you just pointed out the facts of who a Christian is. You put yourself out there as a Christian who at times struggles to do right….Lord, help me to not make someone watching me, walk away from you. Help to always be aware that an unbeliever could be watching me. I want my life to reflect you Lord, so they can have the hope and peace that only you can bring. In Jesus name amen.

This is so exciting, Dee! I love that you are having a dialogue about Jesus with your lovely hair stylist friend. And Jesus is the One, who died for us! I will pray for Margaret. It can be hard to understand, but once a person can see God’s love through the love of a friend, like you, it can open up a new world to one who is seeking. Oh, this give me good chills.
I had a wonderful visit with a dear friend that used to be my work partner at school. I praise God for forever friendships with Christian friends. It is pure joy to pick up right where we left off, even if we have not seen each other for a long time. Remain in Me and I will remain in you. He repeats this over and over. It is a reminder to stay close to Him so we do not stray; to the world, to our idols, away from Him.

I think it means that when Jesus went to the cross, we were made clean by the cutting and pruning. All the verses that say, “Do not fear…” help to remember that God is in charge and I am not. My favorite is the one I repeated over and over when I had radiation:
“For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”
Isaiah 41:13 NIV
D. What promises and warnings in verses 4-6?
By remaining in Him we prosper and bear fruit. When we don’t remain in Him we wither and die.
E. What promise and what condition is in verse 7? What do you think this means?
We must know The Word and we will be granted the things for which we “wish.”
I believe that if you know the Word well, then you live by the Word. As a benefit of doing so, we actually are granted the things we would like to have (like peace, wisdom, love), or we are the people we would like to be.

You bear lots of fruit.

Not sure, I remember Keller saying it but I can’t find it in any of the transcripts. Are they, The Great Commission (find people!) and keeping the Commandments of God?
Interesting thought about going to the cross — possible, but I think he means cutting off dead branches and pruning the living ones through discipline.

A. What stands out on your first reading and why?
I love the emphasis on “abiding in Him” and the idea of pruning, to be more fruitful. I feel that I need to prune away the sinful thoughts, words and deeds in my life, constantly. If we abide in His Word, we stay close to Jesus and we are more sensitive with our own thoughts and words. Our thoughts can easily become words and they can do harm, if we use them carelessly. I always think of my rose bushes when I read this passage, because the roses that I prune correctly, bear beautiful roses; those that I don’t prune can wither away, because of the dead branches.
B. What are two things the Father does in verse 2 to make the vine more fruitful?
The Father takes away every branch that does not bear fruit and every branch that He prunes becomes more fruitful.
C. What do you think verse 3 means? Can you give an illustration of the Word making you clean?
We are clean because Jesus died for our sins. When I have negative thoughts about something someone has said to me or I am hurt by someone, I need to go to God’s Word and pray that the Lord will clean my heart. I need to pray and to give my sorrows and fears to Jesus and ask for His help to see the situation through His eyes and to forgive.
D. What promises and warnings in verses 4-6?
Our lives cannot bear fruit if we do not abide in God’s Word and spend time with Him in prayer. If I abide in Him, He then abides in me and produces much fruit. It is never about me, it is me giving myself to Him and living out His Word. I love this footnote in my Bible: A living union with Christ is absolutely necessary; without it there is nothing.

If I am abiding in Him, He will abide in me and He will answer my prayer of being fruitful for Him. I believe that all prayers, prayed in His Name, must be prayers that are in accordance with His will and for the glory of God. (not like “my wish list for me”) He is God and we trust His answer, His way.
F. What is evidence of being a disciple according to verse 8?
The Father is glorified by our prayers and the fruit in our lives. If the fruit in our lives glorifies God, it shows that we are His disciples.

Jesus love us as the Father loves Him; If we keep His commandments, we will abide in His love. Obedience and Love are the fruits.

A. What stands out on your first reading and why? – Once we accept Jesus and His Word, we are clean, but the process, our sanctification does not stop there. We must continue daily in removing from our hearts and minds anything that will hinder what the work of the Lord came to earth to do. He came so that everyone could be saved. And we have been put in place to help with that process by how we live our lives. People see and will especially watch if they know someone is a Christian. I need to make sure I’m still attached to the Vine.
B. What are two things the Father does in verse 2 to make the vine more fruitful? – He cuts off the branches that are bearing no fruit, and prunes the branches that are so they can continue to grow.
C. What do you think verse 3 means? Can you give an illustration of the Word making you clean? – My first thought was that I am no longer living like I used to live. I’ve removed things that I know are not pleasing to God and that do not bring him glory. But then I thought about it again, and I also had my sins forgiven and removed from me because of Jesus.
D. What promises and warnings in verses 4-6? – If we remain on the vine, He will remain in us. We can’t purify ourself, we need help to do that and that help comes from staying attached to the Vine. If we don’t we will fall away from the vine and wither away thrown away and removed from His grasp.
E. What promise and what condition is in verse 7? What do you think this means? – I’ve always been confused by this, because I know when I ask, I don’t always get what I want. I have to always be in the Word and learning and growing to be more like Jesus. Is it meaning that as I grow deeper in to a relationship with Jesus, my prayers will be more in line with what His Word says and I will then be asking or realizing that His will will be done?
F. What is evidence of being a disciple according to verse 8? – We have to bear fruit. We need to be growing away from ourselves and more toward Jesus.

I went to breakfast with my 2 grands 6&8 and a friend and her adult daughter, when the food came the 8 year old immediately said we needed to pray. She then said she was getting baptized the next time they offered at her church. She had told me a couple of weeks ago she was thinking of it. It was such a blessing to hear.

Share one that spoke to you and why. – When I was 18 I was in an accident where my head hit the windshield and the plastic surgeon talked about grafting skin from my leg to my forehead. I was sickened by how it sounded it would have had to happen so I said no. It was more of an emotional decision at that point, but now being grafted to God brings on a whole new thought process for me. It was in a sense emotional for me, but I was blessed to have been chosen and taken from the world’s ways, pruned I guess, and grafted on to God. I was now attached to him because of him grafting me in to be part of Him. Oh Lord, thank you for your grafting.
4. How do you know if a branch has a formal or a vital relationship? – A vital relationship will have the footprint of God in their lives. I kind of see a picture of a branch after a storm, the leaves are all ripped off from the wind, but the branch is still hanging on. But the minute you take that branch and snap it, it breaks in two. I think as Christians, if we don’t have a vital relationship with God, when the trials and temptations come, we will snap in two. We won’t be able to hang on any longer and we will fall to the ways of the world. The peer pressure of the world will take control over us.

When you look at your life, where do you see a supernatural character change? – Oh my I see it in a lot of places, but I think the one spot that I am amazed at, is when I see something I’ve written down, or something I pray. I look back and think, wow, that came from me. But I know that it’s only by God’s Word and the hunger I have to learn more about Him and The Word, that is producing that talk, that written prayer.

What did he mean? – I’m not sure I was heard that one, but I think what it seems to be saying is that it takes time to change. It all starts with a small step or bud and as we grow and are watered with His Word, and teachings, that little bud will turn in to something glorious and stronger. On 6, that’s right Julie. He also said that if don’t have the buds of all of them, you may just be a naturally patient or gentle person — but that is not the same as the fruit of the Spirit.

The vine draws nutrients from the ground. (Jesus is the vine, God is the vinedresser) As the life of the stem enters the life of the branch (we are the branch) it results in “Supernaturally fueled character change”. I also love that we are built for more than time and space, there is a streak of eternity in us +soul and spirit. It means that our hearts are conductive material and our hearts are like plugs, designed for impactive connection with God to be interlocked with his nature, so that His power and glory can run through our circuits.
These both show how important it is to stay in His love, His will and in relationship with Him through prayer and listening to Him, daily. I need to do this daily to have my soul be fed by Him, so that I may have a vital, not mechanical, relationship with Jesus.
4. How do you know if a branch has a formal or a vital relationship?
A mechanical relationship is what is seen on the surface, what appears to be. A vital relationship is organic and always growing closer to God, and deepening our relationship with Him, over everything else in our life. If we do that it, our lives will show God’s footprints in who we are, what we say and how we love others. Obedience to God, love of God and demonstrating His love for others in our lives, are the most important things in a vital relationship.
5. When you look at your life, where do you see a supernatural character change?
My prayer daily is that I am pressing in closer and loving God more fully, depending on Him only, remaining in His Word more consistently, and growing in His love daily. Praying that His footprints are evident in my life.

I am not sure, but if there are no buds on the branches, there will be no fruit. We must be connected constantly with the source of nourishment, to grow. We must be grafted to the vine of Jesus to bear the fruit.

The repetition of the word “abide.” This word takes a relationship with Jesus from the head to the heart. A heart to heart relationship (“Abide in Me, and I in you”) will develop fruit (“whoever abides in Me and I in him, bears much fruit”). Our relationship with Him must go from the head/knowledge of Him to the heart before a change will take place.
B. What are two things the Father does in verse 2 to make the vine more fruitful?
Takes away the branch that produces no fruit and prunes the branch that bears fruit.
C. What do you think verse 3 means? Can you give an illustration of the Word making you clean?
When I read this verse Hebrews 4:12 immediately came to mind. “For the word is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” The disciples heard the words of Jesus, the living Word, and in a sense were clean in hearing and receiving His teachings.
One verse that comes to mind while being with others, especially non-Christians is Colossians 4:6. “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” This verse always cuts to my core and reminds me to watch my tongue and respond in a Christlike manner…think before I speak🤦🏻♀️!

Promise: If we abide in Him we’ll produce fruit. Warnings: If we do not abide in Him, we won’t bear fruit. Apart from Him we can do nothing. We’ll be cast out, gathered and thrown into the fire and burned.

The promise: We can ask what we desire, and it shall be done for us.
The condition: We must abide in Him and His words must abide in us.
If our relationship is right with Him what we ask will be according to His word, which is His will.

If it’s a hard situation that needs to be thought about, then I put it through the true/right filter to keep my mind on the right path.

Our hearts are like the plug that connects us to God. I like the conduction analogy! His power and glory can run through our circuits. We have this interconnection with God. The reason I like this is because it means I am joined to Him. That is a comfort.

If the branch has a formal connection (our lives) there is a connection between you and God, or is the connection more organic and vital. Is there any fruit? Are God’s footprints on your life? Is your relationship mechanical or is there love and obedience present? I guess I missed this in question 2G. I think I was confused because love is already a fruit of the Spirit. I didn’t think it would be mentioned another time.
I am not surprised our scientific gal likes the conduction analogy.

7. What stands out and why?
—I am jumping in here mid week after having a full household of family for a week, lots of grandkids in and out and hosting a family reunion on Sunday. Then I ended up with
Strep throat and needed to crash for a couple of days. Yesterday was better and today I’m definitely feeling better. Life goes on. 😊
—I was so encouraged by what stood out as I read the first of Keller’s sermon. His clarifying for us that the first sign that a branch is fruitful is to be growing in God’s love which means growing in loving God. I appreciated the challenge to consider would others see that being lived out in my life. It reveals a-lot about my own Christian walk and witness.
8. Would a mechanically religious person be growing in love? Why or why not?
—No they don’t because love is a heart issue. Love always softens a heart. A mechanically religious person is concerned about what they do and not who they are in their heart and the relationship of their heart towards God.
9. Are you growing in God’s love toward Him? Toward others? What evidence do you see?
—Yes I am. I find I am hungry for his Word and my time alone in study and prayer is precious to me. If I falter in that I feel at loss. I miss Him.
When it comes to others the evidence is pretty clear for me personally. There are some individuals whom I have disliked immensely for whatever reason over the years. Some who are relatives and some acquaintances whom I have known for years and didn’t go away in my life. God has actually now in my later years had me in a number of situations where I have had to sit down with them in casual conversation and he has given me his grace to interact with them kindly when in years past I ignored or avoided them at all costs. Some of them have changed but more importantly I have. He has taken some of that hardness of heart from me. And I trust that I will grow more in my love for Him and others.
10. He said being a nicer person does not necessarily mean you are growing in love. Why?
—The goal is not to be a benevolent and charitable person or even to be nicer or more courteous and pleasant. I would say those things can actually be self serving. But Jesus said growing in our love for God is what really matters.
11. What were you like when you first fell in love with someone? How does that parallel your love for the Lord?
—There was a deep desire to be with that person as much as possible spending unlimited amounts of time together.
Being with the Lord is a deeply satisfying experience because He reminds me of his love for me and I find a very real security in Him. As I spend time in His Word I get to know Him better and better. He brings all things beautiful into my life. The world is harsh and unkind but He is the opposite.
12. What was the point of his eating the whole dessert illustration?
—I loved that illustration. I love sweet desserts and I make some beautiful and good tasting ones. It was easy to identify with.
I love the references in the Bible to how the Lord and his Word are sweet like honey. And the verses like:
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”
Psalms 34:8 NKJV
“You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy.”
Psalms 63:5 NLT
So as Keller said “love is so sweet” and God’s love for us is the sweetest. 💕
So encouraging Some of them have changed but more importantly I have. He has taken some of that hardness of heart from me. And I trust that I will grow more in my love for Him and others.

7. What stands out and why? – Well I just found a new way to look at true love. It’s not just an emotion, it’s so much more. It’s having a hunger for a person, or a thing. I do feel my love for God has grown. I was sitting on my back porch today and have a headache so I really didn’t want to sit down and do this study. To dig in to today’s reading, but I felt convicted in a way that made me get up, get my IPad and Bible and dig in. My hunger for Him outweighed the headache.
8. Would a mechanically religious person be growing in love? Why or why not? – I think they could be, but it wouldn’t be a true love. The love that God wants to see in us as believers. We can all grow in anything, but I think it would just be a check the box kind of love. Do it because it seems to be the right thing to do. But what is the motive behind growing in love. Do we grow in love to be closer to God or to look good on the outside to others around us. A true love has to come from deep down inside of us, that we don’t think of anything other than helping or loving where that need may be.
9. Are you growing in God’s love — toward Him? Toward others? What evidence do you see? – I can honestly say that I am growing in love toward God. I’m digging deeper in to His Word and wanting to learn as much as I can. But what I hate to admit, is that love for God sometimes pushes others and other things to the side. I will put off doing something that I need to be doing, or say wait a minute, because I’m in the Word. I know that’s not a bad thing, but I don’t have the same love for others, sadly even my husband. I feel their love toward me is sometimes suffocating or hovering. Like I need my space, but with God and His Word, I don’t feel that way. I definitely need to grow in spreading true love around
10. He said being a nicer person does not necessarily mean you are growing in love. Why? – A moral person can be nice, but the relationship is superficial more an outside type relationship, but if we are really growing in love, we will want to be with a person more or in God’s Word.

To just hear their voice made me happy. Now when I get in to the Word, I see things that I haven’t in the past, and I get excited to see how all the scriptures tie back to Jesus. To be born again doesn’t just mean we have an emotional experience but that we’re grafted in. We as the branch are brought into the vine, that’s the connection. Grafting is a process where cutting into the vine is required and matching the cut to the young shoot/branch and taping it together. It takes time and patience. The word for a “young shoot” is scion, which also means a descendant of a notable family! Romans 11:17

A formal branch just hangs there but there’s never a vital connection.
A vital branch will produce fruit which according to the Bible is used of supernatural character change. God’s footprints will be in our lives.

We, as Christians should exude love. It should be an adjective our friends would use to describe us. Oh boy! I’m not sure anyone would use that to describe me. I did have someone say that I was at good person recently 🤷🏻♀️.

No, they don’t have the “hook up” to God! They are worried about rules. They aren’t getting better at loving God.

I believe I am. I want to be with Him, in His Word when I can. I have more patience with people. But, I do need to grow more for sure!

I wanted to be with them always! I should want to be with Him, talking, praying, reading His Word.

13. What stands out and why?
—What stands out to me is the importance of God’s Word and how I approach it. He said the attitude of a heart that is in love with God will be one of tremendous honor toward the commands of God (His Word). He pointed out Psalm 1 that says “His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on it he meditates day and night.” I personally have never seen a Christian who loves God and really understands what Jesus has done for them as their Savior who does not desire to read, study and hear the Bible being taught. A hunger for God’s Word is a sure sign of a born again Christian. Not just for knowledge but because it satisfies the heart.
14. If you came to Christ when you were older, were you fearful of what He might ask you to do? If so, why, do you think?
—I was a small child when I accepted Christ but I had many insecurities well into adulthood about my walk with the Lord. I wasn’t so much afraid of what He might ask me to do as I was hampered by my sin and I didn’t have a good clear understanding of what Jesus had done for me so I was fearful of not being able to do what Jesus asked of me. I’m not sure that I articulated that very well. I realize I compared myself to other Christians and I always felt I didn’t measure up. I look back and realize the enemy had me pretty distracted for a long time. But praise God for his patience with me.
15. What is the best reason for wanting to obey?
—The whole reason for wanting to obey is out of love for my Savior. And my love for Him grows when I see and understand that He has done everything for me and I rest and rely completely on what He has done. I make Him my treasure and want to give Him what He treasures. It rejoices his heart when I value Him and his Word and choose to obey it. Out of love for I seek to please my husband and it deepens our marriage relationship. How much more important that I seek to please God out of love for Him and grow into a deeper and stronger relationship with Him.

—“To see by love thy law fulfilled and hear thy pardoning voice has turned this slave into your child and duty into choice.”
I focus on the word “choice”. All of life is about choices. My choices result from my understanding of Who my wonderful, pardoning (forgiving)God is and that he has made me his child. I’m no longer a slave who is dutiful just doing things for God. I want to act out of loving response.

I wanted to spend all my time with them, I felt giddy and happy.
I don’t think it compares at all…it’s a much different love. Yes, I want to spend time with Him, in His word and in prayer but for a much different reason. I want to become more like Him. This takes me back to question #9, if my love is growing in Him, then I become more like Him and therefore will grow in my love towards others.

Love your answers to 9 and 10., Sharon. Wow! This is so good! Our motives are so important! I agree that the more we love Him, the more we can love others. Often, our love for others can have an agenda. I think the love and obedience helps get rid of the agenda.

If we have the love of God first and foremost in our life, it will be displayed by our other mindedness, our love and compassion for others.

A mechanical religious person is good and pleasant, does nice things and is busy, and this is probably is based more on habit, but not a deepening love for the Father. A deepening love for the Father is a desire to know Him better and putting that first in your life, more time Praise Him, telling Him you love Him and being in His Word.

The older I get, the more I desire to know Him better, deeper and have a closer “heart” relationship with God. I desire to be obedient to Him and to rely on Him totally. I have a deep desire to draw others to know Him better. I pray that when my journey is difficult, it will others see Jesus in the way I handle it.

We can do nice things, but remain centered on ourselves, rather than centered on Christ. Our hearts and souls are fed by the vine and we will be growing in love, if we abide in Him, and get better at loving Him. Then we are able to feel His love connected to us and we are better at showing His love to others, even those who may be difficult in our lives.

I wanted to be with him all the time and know everything about him. I wanted to know his deepest thoughts and desires, not just the things that appeared on the surface. I wanted to please him in every way. I wanted to spend every day and night close to him. The more I fall in love with Jesus, the more I want to know and understand Him, be obedient to Him, be close to Him every minute and depend on Him totally.

I know these things, but I also feel like Paul who continually has a “thorn in his side” that God will not remove. I continue to sin even though I know what is right and true. I have begged the Lord to take it away, as Paul did. The Lord told Paul to remain in Him. He was sufficient. Paul said it kept him humble. Hmmmm….

17. What two things are done in pruning? How does this help the vine to flourish?
—Pruning brings out the very best in the vine and and brings out its productivity. These things are for the purpose of growth. Loss of what is cut off actually makes the vine stronger and better.
18. When God prunes us, takes away something from us (good or bad) we need to do three things. List what they are and then consider how to apply them to a situation past or present.
—We are to
1) learn: God wants me to get my life out of Him
2) trust: We need to trust God’s schedule, his appointment and his agenda. And not trust our own. We can’t trust our own judgement instead we need to trust God’s insight into our lives. He sees it all so we have to keep perspective. His ways are better than mine.
3) obey: Keller says stay close to God and keep up your time with him. We are to obey him, go to Him and hold on to him.
19. He talks about sucking from the wrong stem, which is idolatry. Does that cast any light on what you might be looking to for life other than God?
—I have in times past looked to my husband for my happiness and satisfaction in life. I have looked to my children to bring pleasure and make me proud. I have looked to good friends for my enjoyment and fun. I have looked to my status in the community and the church for value. And sadly the list could go on. But nothing and no one apart from God could satisfy the longings of my heart. God graciously pruned away at my heart. And I slowly learned that they all failed to do and be what I needed. That I was sucking on the wrong stem. Only Jesus brought life giving sap into my branch, into my being and I got nourished and satisfied by him.
20. What did you learn (or perhaps already knew!) about Martin Luther and John Wesley?
—They are great examples of lives changed from mechanical religious ways of functioning to having a supernatural character change in a personal relationship with Jesus.
Keller’s comments:
“Martin Luther and John Wesley who got convicted of something deeper, the sin of self-will, the sin of self-righteous, the sin of thinking that they could be their own savior. They received Christ as Savior, and they forsook their own works, and they gave their lives to him totally. It was then they began to actually grow riper and wiser and deeper and growing in the supernatural character change of Jesus.”
13. What stands out and why?
I love this reference to Psalm 1: His delight is in the law of the Lord. If we are obedient to the Lord, we need to be that way with our heart, out of love….not out of fear of not getting to heaven. If we live out of a “need to obey in order to get to heaven”, we have a different view of God than what He desires of us….we are just looking for ways to get to heaven and get God’s blessing out of “need”. If we truly and deeply love Him first in our life, we meditate on His laws because we love Him and want to live a life pleasing to Him. I need to think less about pleasing myself, which is just self serving love. If His law impacts my heart and changes my Heart to put Him first, then He is my treasure and my Vinedresser. When Jesus put me first by assuring my eternal life in heaven, how can I not trust Him and put Him first in my life.
14. If you came to Christ when you were older, were you fearful of what He might ask you to do? If so, why, do you think?
I came to Christ as a child, yet I had moments of straying and misunderstanding as a teen. (especially when I was pruned! Now I am thankful I was pruned!) I think I need to always have complete trust of Him, though there are moments of feeling “what is going on and where are you leading me”. This is because we can never see ahead on our path, which is probably a very good thing. Letting go is hard to do at times, even as a Christian ~ yet He is always faithful. Always.
15. What is the best reason for wanting to obey?
I want to obey because I love Him and I want my life to be pleasing to Him, even if it causes me chapters of pain. He and His plan are much more important than my pleasure, in the eternal plan. The older I get, the more I look back and see how the pruning was good, though painful at the time.

13. What stands out and why? – There is a difference between moral love and Christ like love. We love, because He has done so much for us and we want to glorify and please him. Others love because they think they need to, or because it’s the right thing to show toward someone. I need to search my heart and make sure my love is authentic, godlike love.
14. If you came to Christ when you were older, were you fearful of what He might ask you to do? If so, why, do you think? – I was 35 years old when I gave my life to Christ and I’d have to say at 64 I’m still a bit afraid of what He might ask me to do. I pray I am as obedient to his leading as I can be and not hesitate to say yes. My biggest fear is that I won’t be able to do it, but I should know that if I’m listening to the Lord, and He’s guiding me, I will be able to do anything at all.
15. What is the best reason for wanting to obey? – To please the One and only person who ever did everything for me. I want to make Him happy. I want him to see that he didn’t waste anything on me by taking my place on the cross. I want Him to see that I understand and know deep down the sacrifice he made for me.

I have to really grasp it deep down that I’m forgiven because of His sacrifice on the cross. He took my guilty verdict and I was pardoned. And because of this, I want to please Him. I don’t think of it as a chore, or duty, I think of it as doing it because I am so loved with an unconditional love that only Jesus can give me. There were no strings attached. I’m happy to obey His commands so I can be as close to the Trinity as possible.

17. What two things are done in pruning? How does this help the vine to flourish? – He goes in and prunes us mercilessly so He can stimulate our productivity and grow us in to the person we should be.
18. When God prunes us, takes away something from us (good or bad) we need to do three things. List what they are and then consider how to apply them to a situation past or present. – 1. Learn; 2. Trust; and 3. Obey; I learned all three of these things 3 years ago now. When we were looking to move to Tennessee and lookin for houses, we had to do it virtually with our realtor. We kept getting beat out on offers with cash offers. Joe, my husband was getting discouraged and kept saying, “maybe God doesn’t want us in Tennessee”. I kept saying “maybe God’s got something better.” We were starting to settle on houses that really didn’t fit what we were looking for just to get a house. But God…He had the perfect house for us that was not on the market yet. When we finally got to virtually see it, it was perfect! It’s because of God who allowed and provided the means for me to get what ever it is. But I need to constantly be thanking the Giver and realize that all of my material stuff can be taken in an instant. The only true ‘stem’ I have that will never leave is God, the only one you can feed me as needed.

What did you learn (or perhaps already knew!) about Martin Luther and John Wesley? – I didn’t realize they were not true believers in the beginning, but religious people who were finally convicted of their sins and fell closer to the feet of Jesus. They came to realize it was not them at all, but only Jesus could be their savior and gave their lives to him. What hope this brings me for those who ‘know about’ God, but don’t KNOW Him.

21. What is your take-a-way and why? – A relationship with the Father is not just a one and done kind of thing. There is so much to Him, our Father, to Jesus our Savior and to the Holy Spirit our guide and counselor. I have to look deep in to each and every part of the Word to find that true relationship, but until I get there, until I have it all together (which I think will be at my last breath) the Trinity will be there walking along side of me the whole way. Thank you for being patient with me Lord, I constantly need your guidance. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
17. What two things are done in pruning? How does this help the vine to flourish? Cuts off what isn’t bearing fruit and cuts back the fruit so it flourishes and bears more fruit. So the branches will draw on the stem the way it never has before.

Learn, trust and obey. What is God trying to teach me in this? Trust His timing and listen to His direction. Don’t run ahead and make decisions because I just want to be done handling stuff.

14. If you came to Christ when you were older, were you fearful of what He might ask you to do? If so, why, do you think?
I became a Christian as a child, but as I did get older in my walk there were definitely times of being fearful of what He might as me to do because I didn’t want His will to get in the way of my will.
15. What is the best reason for wanting to obey?
It’s the best gift we could give the Lord. It’s what He treasures the most.
16. Write out what he said John Newton said (though I think it was William Cowper) and reflect on it.
To see by love Thy love fulfilled and hear Thy pardoning voice has turned this slave into your child and duty into choice.
Thank You Lord for loving me so much that You sent Your Son, Jesus Christ to die for me so that by grace through faith my sins are forgiven. Now that I have been adopted as Your child, may my hearts desire/choice be through the power of Your Holy Spirit to walk in obedience and abide in Your love.

Nothing that He has done isn’t actually in the end good for us if we can see it. When we believe we are losing, what we really should know is that there is nothing but a loss if we keep it, and a gain if we lose it.
You cut the branches and even the grapes themselves. It seems that the vine is totally destroyed, yet it actually makes the vine grow better. I have seen this in my own garden. I take the branches off at the end of the summer and wow! When they grow the next season they are beautiful!

Learn – I thought what I was doing was the best thing but it isn’t. God knows what I need, not me.
Trust – Trust everything He gives.

I can see this with my grands. Oh how hard it is at my age to raise kiddos. But, I have a very small family and those grands will be there for me at the end! I lose some now and gain in the end!! He has taken care of me so I won’t be alone at the end of my life! Thank You Lord.

A stem might grow bigger than the branch or the vine itself. It must be cut.

Mechanically religious people. Self-righteousness until they actually gave themselves fully to God. They then became who they were by this action.

The branches are pruned that aren’t producing and bad fruit is pruned so that it stimulates growth, productivity and beauty in the vine.

Learn…ask why I’m being pruned, why has He cut the branches that grow/develop out of the stem and get bigger than the stem? I need to remember that God wants me to get my life out of Him.
This helps me in my present situation in keeping my eye on the Lord by staying in His word and prayer. God is in control and I need to surrender to His will and way so that I don’t depend on my desires and think I’m can handle this better than God…not become bigger than the stem.
Trust…ask in what/whom am I trusting? Don’t lose perspective by putting more trust in my judgement and remember to put my trust in God, His schedule, appointment and agenda.
This also helps me in my present situation…trust in God as He knows best.
Obey…ask who am I clinging/listening to? Don’t listen to the temptations of this world but rather stay close to Him, keep up my time with Him and obey His voice.
Again, this helps in my present situation…to be obedient to His Word.

It definitely does cast light because there are times that I get caught up in what I want and I think I know what is best for me. I go back to the root causes of idolatry which are approval, comfort and control (Idol Lies) and I don’t want to be sucking on those stems 😏!

If memory serves me I remember hearing the story of Wesley after preaching in the states, returned to London where he met back up with the Moravian’s whom he’d met on the ship to the states and realized in listening to them that he truly wasn’t saved. He had religion but not a relationship. Keller’s words are, “they were mechanically religious and that sin is not just breaking the rules, they got convicted of the sin of self-will, self-righteousness and thinking they could be their own savior.” Just a side note and I think this is changing in the Wesleyan church but when we first started attending a Wesleyan church their definition of sin was, breaking a known law of God. My husband and I have had many conversations regarding this definition and they were quite eye opening…I won’t take you down that rabbit hole!

21. What is your take-a-way and why?
One of my favorite pastimes is gardening and recently this lesson has caused me to think upon John 15 each time I delight in my garden or flowers. My tomato plant has needed pruning at the bottom so there’s no chance of disease and new growth continues to take place. My zucchini plants are producing an abundant harvest but I’ve had to remove some that are bad, they’re soft and not developing. I had to dig out a dead rose bush because a sucker grew bigger than the main stem and killed it. I guess in saying this and please know that I’m in no way comparing myself to God but a gardeners work is never done. God is our Gardner and He has to constantly prune us and I need to remember that He does this out of His great love for me and that He delights in me and wants what is best for me. He wants for me to abide in the vine and in His love.

God is looking to bring out the Best in the vine, the power and productivity of the plant. Pruning protects and develops the vine. No random strokes by God. If you are a Christian, God will prune you. What has been cut away would have ben a loss to keep and would be a gain to lose. Whoa! That can be hard in the moment! Refining like gold going through the furnace!

Learn. God wants me to get my life out of Him. He is the source and security of my life.
Trust. I need to stop trusting my own perspective. It is His will for my life, which will be for His ultimate Glory.
Obey. Even though I cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel, He sees it all. Love this: An ounce of sin can kill you in a way that 10 tons of suffering can’t.

I certainly have had idols in my life… the sin of idolatry….of my children or grandchildren, the sin of people pleasing instead of God pleasing, the sin of thinking I might know what is best for myself. I need to know that the only Stem that I can be attached to is the Stem of our Father. All others are idols.

I did not know this. They realized the sin of Self will, Self righteousness and the sin of thinking they could be their own savior.
When they realized this, they grew better, wiser and deeper in the Supernatural Character change of Jesus.
21. What is your take-a-way and why? My take away is I need to work on my relationship with the Father to get to the place that is growing my love for Him.
