Not as the world gives…
Several months ago, Kathy, a good friend from church, was in a small carpet store. A young woman named Becky was helping her. Suddenly they found themselves in the middle of a “perfect storm.”
A crisis was happening in the parking lot right outside their window. Two cars pulled in at the same time. A man jumped out crying for help.
“My wife has collapsed!” The man in the other car was a retired EMT and began giving the woman CPR while his wife called 911.
Becky ran out and saw the woman on her back with her mouth open. Becky said, “She looked dead and I was so distraught! I ran back into the store and told Kathy, ‘I think she’s dead!!“
Kathy told me: “Those of us inside felt helpless because we weren’t first responders and didn’t have a way to contribute to the scenario. But I told them, “We can pray.” And so we did.
Then the conversation turned to what happens when you die. I talked about heaven and hell and Becky said: “I don’t know. Maybe we get to come back and try over again to get things right.'”
“Absolutely not.” Kathy said. “Heaven and hell are our only options. God is holy and requires judgment but Jesus fulfilled that judgment in our place on the cross.”
Becky said she was intrigued and began asking Kathy questions. A few minutes later their discussion was interrupted by a man I’ll call Ted, another worker, who was angry about what Kathy was telling Becky. He said he didn’t need God and didn’t believe in God. While the women tried to continue to talk, he kept interrupting to refute whatever Kathy said. He told her all he needed to do to have peace was to meditate.
Kathy asked him gently, “Who do you talk to when you meditate?”
“No one!”
While the above was likely an attack from the enemy, it failed miserably for God used it for good. Becky saw a great contrast between Kathy and Ted. Becky said, “I was so impressed with Kathy. She was composed, peaceful, and calmly stating facts. Ted was flustered, rude, and angry. He finally left in exasperation.”
The woman in the parking lot was pronounced dead. When it was all over and Kathy was about to leave, she turned to Becky and asked:
“Becky — do you want to come to church with me?”
“Yes! I do!”
“YOU DO?“
“Yes!”
“Shall I pick you up?”
“Yes!”
“Where do you live?”
“In the house behind the shop — I’ll be waiting in the parking lot. What time?”
“9:15.”
Kathy told me she left in a daze. Was this really happening? She’d invited people before to come to our church, but no one had. She forgot to get Becky’s number so she wondered if she’d really be waiting there on Sunday. She texted me: I might be bringing a woman on Sunday. Long story!
Becky was waiting when Kathy pulled up, came to church, and was like a wide-eyed child in a candy store. She was watching, listening, soaking it up: the worship, the discussion of Keller’s sermon we’d listened to from John’s gospel, and the love shown her.
Kathy had to return a tile to the carpet store on Monday. As she got in her car to leave, a different employee ran up to her car. She rolled down the window.
“I don’t know what you said to Becky, but something is very different.”
“We talked about Jesus.”
“That’s a conversation I’ve been trying to have with her for two years, but somehow this time she heard!”
Indeed, this was God’s “perfect storm” for all the conditions dovetailed to reach Becky’s heart:
Becky usually works in a backroom on the books, but she was temporarily filling in at the counter when Kathy came in.
She came face to face with death, and that sobered her. It reminds me of Ecclesiastes 7:2.
It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart.
God gave Kathy His peace and wisdom, even when Ted stood there refuting her.
Becky saw the great contrast between the peace of a believer and the turmoil of an unbeliever.
The Spirit prompted Kathy to invite Becky to church.
Becky not only started attending church, but Kathy continued to disciple her through a small group study with just a few women, tailoring the study to Becky’s needs. A few months later Becky put her trust in Christ.
Becky and I have had lunch together twice and she cannot get over how different she is. She told me: “I can hardly believe the peace I have, it’s a peace like I’ve never known before. My life is still crazy, but Jesus is with me. Remember when you asked last week how you felt when you first fell in love with someone? That’s exactly how I feel.”
Will you pray with me for Becky’s family who does not believe? She is living out 1 Peter 3:1-2.
(By the way, Kathy makes our Keller transcripts possible if you want to thank her here!) This is Kathy below — I hoped to get Becky this morning but she had a sick son.

A Different Peace
And here is the transcript, done by the very same Kathy!

4. Why does the Bible assume that Christians will be sad? In another sermon, Keller said Christians will have more joy and more sorrow than unbelievers have. Why, do you think?
5. What proof does He give that Christians are not to be happy, happy, happy all the time?
6. What is the opposite of peace and how does he illustrate that with Adam and Eve? What was the moment their peace was broken? How can you apply this?
7. One of the lies that is told about Bible-believing Christians? (He refers to an article in the New York Times.)

1. What stands out from the above and why?
The timing of this “perfect storm” and the reminder that it is right in the very middle of the storm and the chaos and desperation that He will meet us as we cry out. The circumstances in the parking lot stripped the conversation between Kathy and Becky down to what really mattered. I loved how “Becky saw the great contrast between the peace of a believer and the turmoil of an unbeliever.” May the Lord work in me in such a way. I am often disoriented in the storm.
This song becomes the prayer ~
Lord From Sorrows Deep I Call (based on Psalm 42)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYGhnbXtqbU
Lord, from sorrows deep I call
When my hope is shaken
Torn and ruined from the fall
Hear my desperation
For so long I’ve pled and prayed
God come to my rescue
Even so the thorn remains
Still my heart will praise You
Storms within my troubled soul
Questions without answers
On my faith these billows roll
God, be now my shelter
Why are you cast down my soul?
Hope in Him who saves you
When the fires have all grown cold
Cause this heart to praise You
Should my life be torn from me?
Every worldly pleasure
When all I possess is grief
God be then my treasure
Be my vision in the night
Be my hope and refuge’
Til my faith is turned to sight
Lord, my heart will praise You
And oh, my soul put your hope in God
My help, my rock, I will praise Him
Sing, oh, sing through the raging storm
You’re still my God, my salvation
And oh, my soul put your hope in God
My help, my rock, I will praise Him
Sing, oh, sing through the raging storm
You’re still my God, my salvation
Nila, thank you so much for sharing the lyrics to this song. I am not familiar with it. I love the last stanza especially this line: “Sing oh, sing through the raging storm. you’re still my God, my salvation.” Praying for you and your son’s situation.
Nila, God’s timing with this song is amazing. The lyrics can become a prayer for sure in the storms that come our way.
Beautiful!
So good to see you here, Nila, and always giving us some excellent song lyrics to help solidify the truths we are learning. Praying this morning for your son and grandkids and you!
Nila, Thank you for sharing this link and the lyrics. It is so meaningful to me right now. You are Praising Him in the middle your storm. Praying for you, your precious grandchildren and your son daily.
I love the video that goes with this song. Thank you for sharing that too, Nila. I found it so calming.
Sunday: God Hunt
1. What stands out from the above and why?
Kathy and Becky’s story is a testament of the moving of the Holy Spirit when we are obedient and bold for Him. I got goose pumps reading about their story: God’s “perfect storm” for all the conditions dovetailed to reach Becky’s heart. Praise God! Thank you, Dee, for sharing this.
Thank you, Kathy for all the work that you have done to transcribe Tim Keller’s sermons. He has so many good things to share and the transcript has helped me very much.
2. How have you experienced God, or His peace, this week?
This past week’s study on the Holy Spirit touched my very core. And our associate pastor’s last 2 messages have been on the Holy Spirit, too. I thank god for His Word and how it nourishes my soul.
I have been anxious about an upcoming trip with my daughter to the Philippines later this week. I know several friends are praying for me and have shared Scripture with me. A few unknowns and I keep going back to God’s promises of His care and provision and they have given me peace that passes all understanding.
I pray for a sweet trip and special bonding for you and your daughter — and it would be a bonus to have flights go smoothly.
Bing! That is so exciting for you to be able to go “home.” I will pray for your peace in the situation. I am nervous about travel overseas as well these days. God has your back! Aren’t we lucky for that?
Thank You Lord for our ability to travel and to be with our loved ones. Thank You for the money, time, and technology. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who is with us all the time. Please help Bing be calm before, during, and after the trip. allow her this peace so she may enjoy her relatives and the time she is able to share with them. I pray this in Your Holy Name. Amen.
Amen to Laura’s prayer.
Bing, I will add my prayers to the others here for your travels to the Philippines. I trust God to richly bless you with his peace and protection and know He will be close to you in all of it and will go before you. And praying for Him to bless your time with your daughter.
Praying for your trip and peace on the journey and that it will be a sweet evidence that He is with you. I’m actually encouraged to read of your misgivings for this trip. My kids and I are traveling back to Albania in October and, for the first time, I’m not looking forward to it at all. International trips are so full of headaches, stress, fatigue, and uncertainties, and I’d just rather stay at home where all is status quo and familiar. I’m looking forward to hearing how God helped you on this undertaking and also praying for a sweet time with Ruth! Sounds like this could turn out to be quite special and memorable! Love to you.
I am praying for you and your daughter to have a wonderful, meaningful trip, dear Bing. I pray that the Holy Spirit will anoint you with the peace that only can come from the Father. May your travel be enjoyable and without complications. May our Mighty God be with you each day and have all transitions go smoothly. (And smooth flights, as well) 🙂 May our Father take care of all the unknowns and may you and your daughter have treasured time of growing closer and sharing your hearts. May God bless all visits with friends and family with pure joy and love.
Thank you to you all! I am copying and pasting all your prayers and will share them with Ruth Ann. I am doing a final packing (sort of) tonight. I am praying for God to use my “blessing suitcase” (as a friend calls it) to arrive safely and it will be a God-blessing to the recipients. Nothing extravagant but will be given with love.
It will take us a total of 26 hours to get to where we are going including the layovers. This is what I am dreading, Missy, in response to your misgivings about long flights, etc. But we will go in the wings of all of your prayers. Thank you very much!
Praise God you now have peace. Prayers it continues and the unknowns work out better than you can imagine. We know He does incredibly more than we can ask or imagine.
Thanks, Judy!
Prayers sweet Bing. May you and Ruth feel His presence and protection through all your travels and may you have a wonderful visit with your family.
Sharon, the “P”‘s I need prayers, presence, and protection. and peace from both Judy and Nila! Thanks!
Bing,
May our God bless and keep you and give you peace throughout this trip.
1. What stands out from the above and why?
WOWIE-ZOWIE! That’s an incredible story! I love the calm of Kathy versus the angst and anger of Ted.
2. How have you experienced God, or His peace, this week?
I had the hardest week of the year last week. I’m having an eye issue and work was extremely difficult. I felt His presence, the Holy Spirit, with me through it all. Please pray that my eye improves. Long story, but I have a slight double vision. Concerned, but know He has the plan. Will check in with the dr tomorrow. Thanks for any prayers.
Laura, I will be praying for your appointment tomorrow. May God put his healing touch on your eye and clear everything up for you.
Laura, I am praying for a resolution to your eye problem. Double vision doesn’t sound comfortable or fun. Praying for your visit to the doctor as well.
Wowie – zowie! Oh Lord, please be with Laura and bring healing to her eye – no double vision please.
Laura, You have my prayers too! 💕
Oh, Laura! May the Lord calm your heart and give you His assurance. I am praying for peace in your heart and for total healing for your eye. May God give your doctor wisdom and direction in caring for your vision.
Laura, please know that you are in my prayers. I experience horizontal double vision ( didn’t realize it til my eye appointment) and I had to get glasses with prisms in them which makes it possible to drive without having to close one eye 😏. It usually happens when I’m tired or stressed.
❤️🙏
I meant vertical not horizontal 🤦🏻♀️
Good to know Sharon! I have changed so much that my thoughts went something like this…. “Oh well, maybe there is some sort of lens that can help me see without double vision that someone has created!” God will help me with that! And here you are, to explain how it all works! In the past I would have been afraid and negative. Thank you!
Prayers, Laura, doctor is able to solve the double vision problem quickly snd vision is restored to normal
I’m still waiting for the doctor to give me some information. Thanks for all your prayers!
Laura,
An understandably hard week !
May you find a solution to this double vision.
Sunday: God Hunt
1. What stands out from the above and why? – Oh my goodness what a story from Kathy and Becky. Sadly one woman died, while Becky now lives. God can use so many situations, whether good or bad, to bring light to another. I will be praying for Kathy’s family and her co-worker ‘Ted’ to see the glory of God and how He changed her life and for them to want it too.
2. How have you experienced God, or His peace, this week? – These past few weeks have been hard. We have three dear friends that have been hit hard with cancer and just today I found out my brother-in-law was taken to the hospital and possibly had another heart attack with a heart that is only working 35%, reality is setting in on how much longer he has. But even with the news of these aggressive cancers and my brother-in-law, this study in John has brought me so much closer to the truth of just who and what the Trinity is and does on my behalf. I’ve learned that Jesus will go before the judge for me and has given me the Holy Spirit to walk along side me and hear my cries for these dear friends and family. I know that I’m not alone and he will give me the wisdom I need to know how to help by praying big bold prayers.
Yes, Julie, “praying for big bold prayers”. Amen to that!
Julie, I am sad to hear of the events in your life. I pray for peace for each of the people you mentioned.
I agree totally about this John study! I have needed to hear it and may even go back and review in the next few weeks. I have shared it with others too. I had a horrible week last week as well. Looking forward to a better one for us to come. ♥️🙏
Thankful for your peace and may the Lord show you how to pray big bold prayers.
Gosh Julie, having suffering hit those who are precious to us is hard. Yes pray big bold prayers because we have a big bold God who is able to save and to rescue. And last weeks lesson was a wonderful reminder of the comfort our Advocate brings to our lives.
Oh, dear Julie. So much difficult news for you and your family. I will join the others in big bold prayers for your family and friends. I agree that this study has been so encouraging and I so love and appreciate each of you dear friends. I am writing a prayer list, as there are so many needs in our blog this week. Praise our God that He is powerful, mighty and filled with love.
Read John 14:26-27
A. Meditate on this. What stands out and why?
The last couple of lines, in the amplified Bible, really comfort me this morning.
“Peace I leave with you; My [perfect] peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. [Let My perfect peace calm you in every circumstance and give you courage and strength for every challenge.]”
John 14:26-27 AMP
B. What is the context? What is happening?
Jesus is telling the disciples they will have a helper to guide them when He leaves. They should listen to the advocate, not the world, and remember what He taught them. They should be peaceful because of this support.
C. This is the fourth gift Jesus is giving before He goes away. What have been the other three?
The others were hope, love, and the Holy Spirit.
D. What does Jesus say about this peace?
It comes because of the Holy Spirit. It is a gift of the mind and heart.
The world cannot give it.
They shouldn’t be troubled or afraid.
E. What is the world’s peace based upon?
The world needs to control things. Peace is based on how well we can do this, whether it’s a government or single person. We have peace when we win. When everything goes as planned and we made it happen that way.
How is this different than God’s peace?
With God we must trust that He is in charge and He will help us. If we do that then our internal peace of heart and mind is present and we are sane 😉, like Kathy was in Dee’s story above 👆.
Thank you for giving us the Amplified rendering of that verse, Laura. Praying for your eyesight. Hope you have a better week!
Loved the Amplified version. So much clear and in depth of what Jesus’ peace really is. Thanks Laura.
Thank you Kathy! For the translations!!! ♥️♥️🙏🙏😇😇
Peace in The Storm!
Sunday: God Hunt
1. What stands out from the above and why?
—Oh my so many things. But what an amazing story of God moving and working to orchestrate Becky being where she was to experience a crisis of someone dying only to have Kathy as a customer in the store at the same time who shared Jesus and invited her to go to church. Praise God for his faithfulness in using Kathy to bring Becky to Christ. It was a delight to hear Becky’s story of God at work.
—And please convey my gratitude to Kathy for preparing the transcripts. They are a really great help to me. I struggle with only having the audio to get good notes. The transcripts work so much better for me personally. I’m blessed by her ministry in doing this. God bless her 💕😊
2. How have you experienced God, or His peace, this week?
—Today was an amazing service at our church. We had a guest speaker who is a good friend to us and our son. Scott and his sweet wife Di have been called to start a church in Wickenburg, Arizona. It is a small town of about 7,000 that swells to 30,000 in the winter when all the Cowboy team ropers, pickle ball players, golfers, snow birds and a wide variety of people show up.
God led Scott & Di to start a church last fall putting up a tent and they had an immediate congregation of 115 people the first Sunday. By the time they stopped for the summer they had over 300 people coming and could only fit 250 chairs in the tent. God is moving in amazing ways in the lives of ordinary people at The Church at Rancho Rio. Scott shared a number of amazing stories of people getting saved and baptized this past Winter. He had pictures of their faces and scripture verses to accompany each story. That was delightful enough to hear about but God was at work in our own midst this morning. I have been trying to encourage my neighbor Christy who is a fairly new believer and a lonely widow. She has a friend Blaine whose life is a mess and we’ve been praying for him. I talked Christy into bringing Blaine to church this morning and he came. That was the first amazing thing. Scott’s message really impacted Blaine and God is moving in his heart. My husband got to visit with Blaine after the service and Blaine was visibly moved by what he had seen and heard. God is at work and we are so encouraged to see it. It’s been a God honoring day.
Aslan is on the move, Bev!
This story of Blaine gave me good chills! Praise God! Thank you for sharing, Bev!
God is such an awesome God, bringing people like Blaine to a service that He knows will impact and tug at his heart. His timing is always best.
Oh, big day as the Spirit moves among people and the Word is preached! Praise God!
What a totally awesome story of Kathy, Becky, Ted, and the woman who lost her life and her frantic husband! How God works in the details is so evident. I can just imagine God planning it all out to perfection to allow Kathy and Becky to be at the right place at the right time. How good is the God we adore! Thank you for telling us this very encouraging story in which we can trace the loving, sovereign hand of God at work in the minute details of His creation. And thank you to Kathy for the massive work on the transcriptions! I can’t imagine how much time that takes! So valuable!
So well put, Miriam!
Monday: The Text
Thank you Kathy for transcribing the sermons. It’s so nice to be able to go back and read again what Tim said.
3. Read John 14:26-27
A. Meditate on this. What stands out and why? – Peace in this world, is not the same as the peace that Jesus and the Holy Spirit provide. The world may think they are giving us the peace we need, but it is not an inner peace, but more emotional, fed by having a place high up in society, having more things that we think will fill the holes in our spirit that only the unfathomable peace we get from knowing and being with Jesus and the Holy Spirit can bring. The peace we get as Christians is an inner peace that is deep down in our souls. Worldly peace is superficial, a topical peace that gets washed away the minute our status changes or our ‘stuff’ is taken from us. Give me the peace of Jesus any day.
B. What is the context? What is happening? – Jesus is preparing the disciples for his leaving and reminding them that they will still have the peace he provides, but now it will be from the Holy Spirit who is coming right behind him and not missing a beat.
C. This is the fourth gift Jesus is giving before He goes away. What have been the other three? – Hope that we have a spot reserved for us as believers, the love of Christ coming and taking our place, the Holy Spirit that will be with us until the end of time, our advocate and counselor.
D. What does Jesus say about this peace? – His peace is different than the world’s peace.
E. What is the world’s peace based upon? How is this different than God’s peace? – The world’s peace will not help us when trouble comes, it will not remove the fear from our troubled hearts. God’s peace is an inner peace that can quench all worldly emotions that we get when trouble comes.
First things first. Thank you so much Kathy for the transcripts. As a person who is both hard of hearing and a visual learner these transcripts are crucial in how much I get from the sermons each week.
I think that will mean a lot to Kathy, Dawn!
1. What stands out from the above and why? Thank you, Kathy for typing the text Some days I listen as I walk and it’s good to be able to go back and read Prayers for Becky As she represents Christ to her husband God wishes none to perish so Lord, please strengthen Becky through the trials and turn her husband’s heart towards You I love the peace Becky now has and knows from where it came and the intricacy of God’s plan to draw her to Himself. Why? I just love God stories and how He always working
2. How have you experienced God, or His peace, this week? I just feel peace this morning. I feel encouraged by that peace and that He will direct my steps.
Judy, isn’t God’s peace just wonderful? He is our peace, indeed, and the only One who can give it to us.
Thanks for that prayer for Becky, Judy! She also has an unbelieving son who I think is 19 and autistic.
1. What stands out from the above and why? The whole exchange between Kathy, Becky and “Ted”. It is such a perfect storm that one would think that it’s made up. To have not only an unbeliever, but also a skeptic present when something so traumatic and life changing was taking place just shows that God had a hand in this and I’m so glad that Becky responded. I’ll keep praying for “Ted”. God placed him in this situation for a reason and who knows what is to become of it?
2. How have you experienced God, or His peace, this week? This week my sister and I attended the funeral of the son (age 27) of a former high school friend of hers who also has a son with our cousin. The cousin now lives out of state and has had very little contact with his son (age 33) and we have only seen him a couple of times over the years. It was a 2 hour drive plus we both had to take the day off of work, which gave us a legitimate excuse to not go and our absence probably would have gone unnoticed anyway, but since she (the boy’s mother) had come the funeral of my niece in 2011 to show support to my sister, we felt that it was important to go. We are very glad that we did. She was so happy to see us and I know that it brought comfort to her to know that my sister knows what she’s going through. God’s love abounds all the more in times when there is cause for adversity!
Dawn, the sacrifice of time and resources your sister and you gave to this friend is a beautiful gift. I am sure you both were a blessing to her.
What a blessing you are, Dawn! What great love you and your sister showed to your friend.
So great you’ll pray for “Ted!”
Monday: The Text
3. Read John 14:26-27
A. Meditate on this. What stands out and why?
—When it says He (the Holy Spirit) will teach you all things I don’t think that is being taught in the sense of a gathering of knowledge and information but rather I like how the Message says it that “he will make everything plain to you”. He will give understanding. I think the promise Jesus gave his disciples there in verse 26 to remind them of everything He told them was very significant. Especially in light of the writings by several of them that produced many of the New Testament books. He truly reminded them of a wealth of things He said by His Holy Spirit.
B. What is the context? What is happening?
—Jesus is seeking here to comfort and encourage his disciples knowing they are confused by what he is telling them is going to happen to him and they are facing an incredibly hard time in the coming hours. They were perplexed.
C. This is the fourth gift Jesus is giving before He goes away. What have been the other three?
—Hope, Love and the Holy Spirit.
D. What does Jesus say about this peace?
—““I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”
He said it was a gift. He was offering them peace of mind that leads to peace of heart and the world cannot give that to them.
E. What is the world’s peace based upon? How is this different than God’s peace?
—The world tries to offer peace through our circumstances but God gives us peace from the Holy Spirit directly onto our hearts.
1. What stands out from the above and why?
This event really shows God’s glory and power, operating in the most difficult circumstance. The details that came together in the midst of chaos, give me such chills. Even in tragedy, God can bring something good. I pray for the man that lost his wife, yet I believe that God put the retired EMT there at this time, too. God Bringing Kathy and Becky together, at this time and place was definitely not a coincidence. The Holy Spirit truly was present with Kathy, as she spoke God’s truth to Becky. Thank you for sharing this story, dear Dee.
Thank you dear Kathy, for making the Keller transcripts. I know we all appreciate what you are doing for those of us on Dee’s blog.
2. How have you experienced God, or His peace, this week?
I have seen God’s hand in my granddaughter’s life this past week. Her wedding venue was destroyed last week in the tornado that went through Columbia, TN. Thankfully, the owners and their pets were safe. Jenny, the owner of the venue, was so sweet and loving to all of the clients, who had given deposits for their weddings. Jenny and her husband spent ten years building this beautiful flower farm and venue, and it was destroyed with three minutes notice. And yet, her first concern was with others. She promised to get all deposits back to each person and to help with finding others venues. She did all this before they even had electricity back. Hannah and Tony have found another venue, that they love very much. How I pray that these dear people, who acted in such a selfless way, when their entire business was destroyed.
Sad story for the owner of the venue — sounds like she may be a Christian.
I am praying that the Lord will make a way for them to rebuild. The people of Tennessee are so loving and supportive on one another.
Oh my, how sad to lose their lively hood, but what a blessing they have been to those worried brides to be. They will be blessed for their graciousness.
Sunday: God Hunt
1. What stands out from the above and why?
Amazing story and wonderful picture of Kathy. It’s so nice to now place a face with who does the transcripts of Keller’s sermons…so much appreciated, thank you Kathy❤️😊
2. How have you experienced God, or His peace, this week?
I have been experiencing God’s peace through His word. It has been a tough couple weeks because of things going on in our church, but trusting God. This from Zephaniah 3:17 has been very comforting to me…”The Lord you God is in your midst, a mighty One who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing.” I have felt His love quiet me and can only imagine Him exulting over me with loud singing! 🎵 🎵🎵 YES!
Sunday: God Hunt1. What stands out from the above and why?
Amazing story and wonderful picture of Kathy. It’s so nice to now place a face with who does the transcripts of Keller’s sermons…so much appreciated, thank you Kathy❤️😊

Father, I lift up the people of Sharon’s church. I don’t know what the problem is but I pray you will work in hearts, help people have wisdom, give grace. I know Your desire is for Your children to live together in unity. In Jesus Name I pray
Thank you Dee…yes, wisdom, grace and unity is much needed!!
I will join Dee in praying for your church, Sharon. Bring your love and unity to the people of this church, Oh Lord.
I stand in agreement that the body of the church will seek out God for the direction, answers, wisdom that may be needed. Stay in His peace Sharon. He’s an awesome God.
Thank you Patti and Julie for your prayers of support!
Monday: The Text
3. Read John 14:26-27
A. Meditate on this. What stands out and why?
Putting these two verses together it appears to me that the Holy Spirit, whom the Father sends as our representative is the Person who will give us peace through His teaching and reminding.
B. What is the context? What is happening?
The context is about the Holy Spirit and what His role has in our lives and that He is leaving us with a gift of peace.
C. This is the fourth gift Jesus is giving before He goes away. What have been the other three?
I’m not really sure.
D. What does Jesus say about this peace?
It is a gift, He’s leaving us with it and it’s a gift the world cannot give.
E. What is the world’s peace based upon? How is this different than God’s peace?
It’s based on our circumstances, it’s subjective.
God’s peace is objective and is based on Jesus Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life and therefore we don’t have to let our hearts be troubled or afraid.
Monday: The Text
3. Read John 14:26-27
A. Meditate on this. What stands out and why?
Jesus is the source of true peace and I have it as a gift from Him.
B. What is the context? What is happening?
Jesus is about to go to the Cross and He is leaving the disciples the gifts they need to weather the storms of life. And since He said v. 27 at the heels of v.26, I could probably say that He left the Holy Spirit who will be our Peace.
C. This is the fourth gift Jesus is giving before He goes away. What have been the other three?
Hope, Love, and the Holy Spirit.
D. What does Jesus say about this peace?
It is the peace that the world could not understand.
E. What is the world’s peace based upon? How is this different than God’s peace?
The world’s peace is defined by the absence of conflict. It is based on performance i.e. if only we agree, get rid of weapons of destruction, etc. God’s peace is immeasurable and perfect and based on the truth and person of Jesus Christ and one I can have in the midst of conflict.
Interesting about weapons of mass destruction. I do think it would be wonderful to get rid of them, but because we can’t trust people, we can’t!
3. Read John 14:26-27
A. Meditate on this. What stands out and why? Don’t let your hearts be troubled nor let them be afraid. Fear does take away my peace. Jesus gives me peace if my focus is on Him
B. What is the context? What is happening? It’s right after their celebration of the Passover meal Jesus is giving them words of comfort and instruction for the times to come
C. This is the fourth gift Jesus is giving before He goes away. What have been the other three? Holy Spirit, love, hope
D. What does Jesus say about this peace? That it isn’t as the world give
E. What is the world’s peace based upon? How is this different than God’s peace? World’s peace is wavering and based on circumstances. God’s peace is eternal and flows from knowing Jesus as Lord.
How are you doing with sensing His peace in the midst of your grief, Judy?
Dee, I really can’t explain it, but the past few days it’s just been a delight to know He is with me. Even in the midst of a friend’s unfair comments to me, He’s allowed me to not respond out of hurt or the anger she spoke to me. Jesus’s peace is a treasured gift.
Tuesday: The Antidote to Fear
Listen or read up to 12:21
Keller says he will cover three things: Jesus is the giver of peace, it’s different than any other peace you can get, and it is the absolute antithesis and antidote to fear. He begins with the third point, which we will study today and tomorrow.
4. Why does the Bible assume that Christians will be sad? In another sermon, Keller said Christians will have more joy and more sorrow than unbelievers have. Why, do you think? – We live in a broken and sinful world full of pain. And throughout the Bible it tells us to rejoice in our sorrows. God knew what the world would become after the first sin was committed by Adam and Eve. He put in place Jesus and the Holy Spirit to help us overcome it as best as we can.
5. What proof does He give that Christians are not to be happy, happy, happy all the time? – Jesus failed at being happy all the time, so there is no way we will be able to always be happy. But as we grow our relationship with Jesus, our fear will diminish and more joy will come out. The Bible says that God’s peace will eliminate fear not our sorrows.
6. What is the opposite of peace and how does he illustrate that with Adam and Eve? What was the moment their peace was broken? How can you apply this? – The opposite of peace is sin. And with Adam and Eve it came when they listened to the lie of the serpent. Once we listen to any one other than God’s Word, we will move away from God, we discover fear, not move away from it. It gets great the farther away from God we move. I can make sure that I am consistently in the Word so I will know when the ‘serpent’ is speaking and that I’m being led away from God. Knowing His Word, helps me to discern the lies that are being told.
7. One of the lies that is told about Bible-believing Christians? (He refers to an article in the New York Times.) – That we are bound to God and under His control. That we believe what is written in his Word, that we are submitting to a God of wrath. It seems unbelievers cannot see the peace we get by knowing God, even when we are in a hard time of our life. I just don’t understand how they make it in this world without the peace of God in their lives.
8. How did the psychologist on the radio after the San Francisco earthquake answer the question about why we are so traumatized compared to our ancestors who buried half their children? – Our ancestors took disasters in stride, they didn’t think they were bigger than God and so did not need him. They knew who God was and that he was in control of the world they lived in. They prayed to God and knew that with Him they were not powerless. We live in a world now, that everything ‘bad’ is a tragedy that people can’t handle. People have no backbone in trouble, they wither away and turn to others for help. They put on the poor me attitude instead of turning to God, the One in control and ask Him to guide and be with them. He’s the only one that can help in times of trouble in a way that the rest of us can’t. Sure we can lend a hand, but it’s only with God’s wisdom and peace we get through things in a way unbelievers can’t understand.
From Julie:
I can make sure that I am consistently in the Word so I will know when the ‘serpent’ is speaking and that I’m being led away from God. Knowing His Word, helps me to discern the lies that are being told.
3. Read John 14:26-27
A. Meditate on this. What stands out and why?
Jesus is preparing them for their ministries after the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension. Jesus is explaining a concept that they are unable to understand at the time.
B. What is the context? What is happening?
He is trying to tell them that He will not be there the way He is now, but the Father will send a helper in His name.
C. This is the fourth gift Jesus is giving before He goes away. What have been the other three?
I find this part confusing. Gift of Comfort, Intercessor/Advocate, Spirit of Truth, and Peace
D. What does Jesus say about this peace?
His peace is not the short lived peace of this world, but a peace that is a result of Jesus’s crucifixion. They will have another kind of real and deep peace and fellowship with God.
E. What is the world’s peace based upon? How is this different than God’s peace?
The world’s peace is temporary and based on current circumstances which are ever changing. God’s peace is deep in one’s soul, a peace that the circumstance of the world cannot take away from us, in spite of severe difficulties.
Patti, I love this… The world’s peace is temporary and based on current circumstances which are ever changing. God’s peace is deep in one’s soul, a peace that the circumstance of the world cannot take away from us, in spite of severe difficulties.
Tuesday: The Antidote to Fear
4. Why does the Bible assume that Christians will be sad? In another sermon, Keller said Christians will have more joy and more sorrow than unbelievers have. Why, do you think?
”Because we live in a very, very sad and painful world.”
5. What proof does He give that Christians are not to be happy, happy, happy all the time?
The Bible tells us to rejoice in our sorrows. To say that a Christian is somebody who’s always happy is an unbiblical test, one Jesus failed constantly.
6. What is the opposite of peace and how does he illustrate that with Adam and Eve? What was the moment their peace was broken? How can you apply this?
The opposite of peace is fear.
Before they ate of the forbidden tree they experienced peace because they were right with God, they ran to Him when He came near but then they listened to Satan when he said, “did God really say?” They ate of the tree, they thought they knew more than God, didn’t think they needed Him and wanted freedom to do what they wanted but then their eyes were opened to their nakedness and put on fig leaves. Eve then heard the Lord walking about in the garden, so they hid from the Lord. The Lord called to Adam asking where he was and Adam replied, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid…” Their peace turned into fear.
4. Why does the Bible assume that Christians will be sad?
Jesus was a “Man of Sorrows.” We live in a sad and painful world.
In another sermon, Keller said Christians will have more joy and more sorrow than unbelievers have. Why, do you think?
We have tender hearts. We get involved with people. This causes us to have sorrow for others.
5. What proof does He give that Christians are not to be happy, happy, happy all the time?
The Bible never says always be happy. It does say that if we are in Christ then our fears will diminish. It says God’s peace eliminates fear, but not sorrow.
6. What is the opposite of peace and how does he illustrate that with Adam and Eve?
It is fear. Adam and Eve had no fear; it was the language of their hearts.
What was the moment their peace was broken?
The moment they decided to disobey (they knew better than God), that they didn’t need Him, was the moment when the relationship was broken.
How can you apply this?
Stay in touch with God. Always need Him!
Laura, how did your appointment go. Did you get any relief from the double vision? I’ve been praying.
Thanks for all your prayers! My eye is much better and she is not concerned about the double vision. It has begun to work itself out now. ♥️🙏
Wonderful answer to prayer…so glad it’s working itself out! Thanks for the update😊
4. Why does the Bible assume that Christians will be sad? In another sermon, Keller said Christians will have more joy and more sorrow than unbelievers have. Why, do you think? We live in a world filled with sin and sadness.
5. What proof does He give that Christians are not to be happy, happy, happy all the time? Christ was a man of sorrows and we live in a fallen world of people depending on themselves, rather than God. There is a difference between “happy” which seems like a constant state we desire and “joy”, which comes from knowing Jesus. We can have joy, even in times of sorrow, because we believe in the God of eternity. This life is but a test ground.
6. What is the opposite of peace and how does he illustrate that with Adam and Eve? What was the moment their peace was broken? How can you apply this? Fear is the opposite of peace. Adam and Eve became aware of fear, the moment they felt like they knew better than God, what was good for them.
7. One of the lies that is told about Bible-believing Christians? (He refers to an article in the New York Times.) The Bible makes them bound with fear and they can’t be free. The Bible cramps their life style.
8. How did the psychologist on the radio after the San Francisco earthquake answer the question about why we are so traumatized compared to our ancestors who buried half their children? Our ancestors believed they were small in a big universe controlled by God. They prayed and they did not have the sense of being powerless. This life was a small part compared to eternity. We lived here for awhile and then went to heaven. But for us, this life is all we have and we are the only ones running this world.
—I think it is because the Bible gives us a more realistic and balanced view of life. We have identified that we live in a broken fallen world so our hope is not to be placed in the things of this world. We actually live in a place of misery and it hurts and is hard to watch. It makes us sad but when we understand the great salvation that Jesus bought for us at the Cross with his own shed blood and his death we are given hope which results in a greater joy in the reality of our true Home in Heaven.
5. What proof does He give that Christians are not to be happy, happy, happy all the time?
—Jesus is our example and was not happy all the time. He is referred to as a man of sorrows. He lived deeply involved with the hurting people of the world and was immersed in their troubles and sufferings and he hurt for them and with them.
6. What is the opposite of peace and how does he illustrate that with Adam and Eve? What was the moment their peace was broken? How can you apply this?
—Keller said the antithesis of peace is fear. Adam and Eve lived in a relationship of peace with God until they sinned by basically saying they didn’t need God. That was sin and at that moment of sinning and going their own way they lost their peace. It is true of me as a believer that when I sin and determine to go my own way or have my own way I lose the peace of being in relationship with God my Father and I lose the sweet fellowship I normally enjoy when keeping in a close walk with Him.
7. One of the lies that is told about Bible-believing Christians? (He refers to an article in the New York Times.)
—The lie as Keller describes it is that as a Christian “you’re bound by the law, you believe in God, you’re submitting to God, a wrathful God. You’ve got to get away from religion if you want to get away from fear. Religion is the opiate of the people. That’s what keeps you enslaved. You’ve got to be free. As you move away from religion, as you move away from God, you’ll move away from fear.”
He also said what the truth is. “Yet the Bible tells us that it’s exactly the opposite. The reason we have a spirit of fear is because as we move away from God, we move into fear.”
8. How did the psychologist on the radio after the San Francisco earthquake answer the question about why we are so traumatized compared to our ancestors who buried half their children?
—That was so amazingly accurate. The Psychologist said
“First of all, our ancestors believe that they were small in a big universe that was controlled by God, and they knew God, and they prayed to God, and they didn’t have the same sense of being powerless.” Or he says, for example, “For our ancestors, this life was a small part of reality. You lived here for a while, then you died, and you went into heaven.” Then he turned and he says, “But you see, for us, this life is all we have. Not only that, we’re the only ones running this world. When something like this comes along, we feel so powerless and helpless, and it engenders tremendous trauma.”
The dichotomy of thinking is so stark. He didn’t say they were just more stoic but their ability to weather the hard things in life actually resulted from belief in God. But so tragic that his thinking was that we actually only have this life in this world so we feel powerless and helpless which leaves us traumatized.
I just want to say “Duh!!”
Feeling a little satirical about that. 🤨 Except that is so sad. 😞 I’m
Had to smile with this from Bev:

Wednesday: Antidotes to Fear
Listen or read up to 21:49 when he begins to talk about Jonathan Edwards.
Our ancestors knew they were small, but God was big. Today we try to control things ourselves, but we are not doing too well.
9. Why is it that moving away from God increases rather than decreases fear? – When we move away from God, our fears grow stronger because we don’t have that natural peace that only He can provide. God is no longer in control of our lives when we walk away from him so we have to deal with it all on our own, and we can’t do it.
10. What was his point about the illustration of the little girl in Macy’s? What was her only way out of fear? – We think we can do things on our own, but in reality we can’t. We have to reach out to others who know better and have our best interest at heart. In our case, in a Christian’s case, that person who knows and can handle all things is God. The little girl in this case needed help, she had to admit that she was wrong in thinking she could do it. She had to get rid of her pride, just like we do and go to God and ask him for his help.
11. Can you think of a time when you “let go of God’s hand” and suffered. Did you repent and go back to Him? Share. – I’m trying to think of a time when I really suffered. I’ve messed up plenty of times, but God has always gotten me through the mess ups. I wonder if I just thought it was my fault I was in the situation I was in because of the choice I made. Were my struggles in life my suffering? I’m asking God to reveal to me the times I suffered.
12. What did Keller mean when he said Christ’s peace is an intelligent peace, not a stupid peace? – When we are aware of the truth and not put too much thinking in to a situation we have intelligent peace. I think he is saying that we don’t play the ‘what if’ game in thinking through a situation and we just take it one second at a time and deal with what is in front of us and not what might come.
This is a great thought, Julie! I think he is saying that we don’t play the ‘what if’ game in thinking through a situation and we just take it one second at a time and deal with what is in front of us and not what might come.
Tuesday
7. One of the lies that is told about Bible-believing Christians? (He refers to an article in the New York Times.)
That Christians are afraid “because they’re bound by the law, believe in God, submit to a wrathful God. You’ve got to get away from religion if you want to get away from fear. You’ve got to be free.”
8. How did the psychologist on the radio after the San Francisco earthquake answer the question about why we are so traumatized compared to our ancestors who buried half their children?
We feel powerless and helpless because we think we control the universe but our ancestors believed they were small in a big universe controlled by God.
Wednesday: Antidotes to Fear
9. Why is it that moving away from God increases rather than decreases fear?
The more we move away from God the more we feel powerless and helpless, we feel that finiteness. As Nietzsche said, “when you get rid of God, there’s no way to be certain about your purpose, why you’re here, what is right or wrong or anything.” When we move away from God we discover our fears, not get rid of them. If I know God is in control of the future, which He is, I don’t have to worry! I have no fears and that is so important in the day and age we live in…so unpredictable but God isn’t!
10. What was his point about the illustration of the little girl in Macy’s? What was her only way out of fear?
She wanted her Mom to let go of her hand because of her desire to be free and be in control. She does let go of her mother’s hand, she gets lost and becomes fearful out of being lost, unknown people and territory and being reprimanded by her mother. She develops a spirit of fear and her only way out is to run back to her mother and take hold of her hand and admit she needed her.
11. Can you think of a time when you “let go of God’s hand” and suffered. Did you repent and go back to Him? Share.
When I was about 17, I figured I knew more than God and would do things my own way. My suffering came in my misery from being away from the Lord. This went on for about 2 years and after I got married and had the influence of my husbands wonderful parents, who loved me and lived out their love for the Lord, I did repent, my father-in-law baptized me and I definitely ran back to God.
12. What did Keller mean when he said Christ’s peace is an intelligent peace, not a stupid peace?
Christ’s peace is intelligent because you think and reason and your eyes are open to truth. Our peace comes from a greater awareness of our condition. Thinking is our friend.
I always love hearing stories about your parents-in-law for they had such an impact on Steve and me. Steve and Don did so much praying and laughing together. And I’m not sure Carolyn had a sin nature like the rest of us.
I’m not sure Carolyn had a sin nature like the rest of us.
This put a big smile on my face as she was the most selfless woman I knew and definitely had the sweet aroma of Christ❤️
Amen to this, Sharon: If I know God is in control of the future, which He is, I don’t have to worry! I have no fears and that is so important in the day and age we live in…so unpredictable but God isn’t!
4. Why does the Bible assume that Christians will be sad? In another sermon, Keller said Christians will have more joy and more sorrow than unbelievers have. Why, do you think? Life has disappointment, misunderstanding, hurt, and loss and Christians aren’t immune to it Christians’ hearts become more tenderized towards others and that causes us to grieve for people in hard circumstances Tragedy and injustice around us can hit us harder because our hearts aren’t as hard and we don’t avoid things that could draw us into sad circumstances. I’m thinking of people like Mother Teresa.
5. What proof does He give that Christians are not to be happy, happy, happy all the time? Jesus wasn’t happy all the tine. Jesus was known as a man of sorrows.
6. What is the opposite of peace and how does he illustrate that with Adam and Eve? What was the moment their peace was broken? How can you apply this? Fear Adam and Eve when they decided to eat the forbidden fruit we’re saying they didn’t need God and they knew better than Him After eating the fruit their relationship was broken from God When Adam heard God coming he ran because Adam was afraid. Sin is so deceptive. It lures us because we think it will be pleasing and it’s what we want Or there can be sin hidden in my heart that causes me to respond in an unkind manner to someone that hurts them and brings no glory to God’s name. Sin then separates me from God until I repent Without God and His guidance the world is a fearful place to live
7. One of the lies that is told about Bible-believing Christians? (He refers to an article in the New York Times.) Christians are bound by the law Being a Christian means you are submitting to a wrathful God to get away from fear you need to get away from God because religion is the opiate of the people.
8. How did the psychologist on the radio after the San Francisco earthquake answer the question about why we are so traumatized compared to our ancestors who buried half their children? Ancestors who believed in and prayed to God didn’t have the same sense of powerlessness. This life was a small part of reality. They lived here a while then went to heaven. Now people believe they are in charge of their own fate and when disaster strikes they flounder because they have no where to turn.
From Judy:
Without God and His guidance the world is a fearful place to live
I never thought about our hearts not being hard because we are Christians so we tend to have more sadness and sorrow.
7. One of the lies that is told about Bible-believing Christians? (He refers to an article in the New York Times.)
That Christians have a dim view of sex because of the Bible. They are bound to fear so they are not free. The world says to move away from God and you will be free. The Bible says the exact opposite.
8. How did the psychologist on the radio after the San Francisco earthquake answer the question about why we are so traumatized compared to our ancestors who buried half their children?
He said that years ago people accepted their children dying. They moved on. They believed that God was in charge. They didn’t have just this life, but something bigger than them. We feel powerless and helpless when things go wrong. They didn’t. It’s the Francis Chan idiom of life:
https://youtu.be/cMbbVR88kd0?si=07HcCeedI3o9aVoE
Not idiom! It’s the Francis Chan “vision” of life!
I will watch!
Thank you for sharing this, Laura! It is so good and so true! Praying for your eye issue to be resolved.
Thanks Laura for this. Makes sense when you really stop and think about it.
4. Why does the Bible assume that Christians will be sad? Because we live in a fallen world and Satan will have his way some of the time. In another sermon, Keller said Christians will have more joy and more sorrow than unbelievers have. Why, do you think? Because our joy comes from Christ and it is deep and eternal. We will have more sorrow because we hurt when we see the brokenness of this world and how God wants to reconcile with all of us. We will empathize more because we will see how all of us are the same, broken and needy people.
5. What proof does He give that Christians are not to be happy, happy, happy all the time? Jesus was a man of sorrows, well acquainted with grief.
6. What is the opposite of peace and how does he illustrate that with Adam and Eve? Fear. When Adam and Eve knew that they had sinned they ran away and hid from God. What was the moment their peace was broken? Their peace was broken when they decided that they didn’t need God, that they knew better than Him. How can you apply this? When I am feeling fear, I need to ask myself what is it in which I have turned from God and taken things into my own hands.
7. One of the lies that is told about Bible-believing Christians? (He refers to an article in the New York Times.) That we have a dim view of sex.
8. How did the psychologist on the radio after the San Francisco earthquake answer the question about why we are so traumatized compared to our ancestors who buried half their children? Because people in the past viewed themselves as small and God was in charge. People nowadays think that they are in control of their destinies.
—The more you move away from God, the more you feel finiteness or limited and subject to circumstances and the more you will feel powerless and helpless. That causes you to discover your fears. The inability to control life causes fear.
10. What was his point about the illustration of the little girl in Macy’s? What was her only way out of fear?
—Basically the little girl went her own way and did her own thing saying to her mother I don’t meed you. Which caused her to be lost and become afraid. The only way you relieve those fears would be to come back to the mother and say I need you. I was wrong. The picture of sin and the need for repent in a nutshell.
11. Can you think of a time when you “let go of God’s hand” and suffered. Did you repent and go back to Him? Share.
—Honestly I have some small and large examples but need to think about what I want to answer???
12. What did Keller mean when he said Christ’s peace is an intelligent peace, not a stupid peace?
—The world’s peace is a stupid peace because it closes its eyes to truth. Christian peace is intelligent because Christ’s peace comes from opening your eyes to the truth. By thinking about what Christ has done and opening your heart and mind to the wonderful realities that you’re adopted, you’re accepted, you’re loved, and you’re an heir to the throne of the universe. If you’re a Christian, then you know God is holy and loving and wise. By having a better awareness of our true condition and our need of Him we have His peace.
Yes to this, Bev! If you’re a Christian, then you know God is holy and loving and wise. By having a better awareness of our true condition and our need of Him we have His peace.
AMEN!
Thursday: Christian Peace
14. What did Jonathan Edwards say?
“Christian peace and only Christian peace is a reasonable peace.’
15. What are some ways Christian peace is opposite to the world’s peace? (Psalm 46)
Christian peace is based on the truth that “God is our refuge, a very help in times of trouble and we have no need to fear.” Even when disasters hit like earthquakes or mountains crumbling into the sea. It is constant, relentless, nothing will change when the body dies and it’s like a river that never runs dry.
Worldly peace is intermittent. You may have peace for a while in your marriage, your job, your hobby etc, but when disaster hits …poof, it’s gone and you have to find something else that can bring you peace.
16. What did Keller mean when he said this peace that Jesus gives is like his “last will.” You won’t get it until He dies. Why?
You receive a will when someone has died and Christian peace is based on the fact that Jesus Christ died for our sins and fulfilled every requirement we have before the Father. When we receive Christ by grace through faith we become His adopted child and are given a deed/title, we are heirs.
Love your answer to 15. Sharon! It is constant, relentless, nothing will change when the body dies and it’s like a river that never runs dry.
9. Why is it that moving away from God increases rather than decreases fear?
Without God, you have invested your whole being in yourself and your abilities to make good decisions. How do you even know your purpose for existence?
10. What was his point about the illustration of the little girl in Macy’s? What was her only way out of fear?
She needed to tell her mom that she was wrong, that she did need her mom. Pride took her away from the dependence on her mom that she needed.
11. Can you think of a time when you “let go of God’s hand” and suffered. Did you repent and go back to Him? Share.
Yes. probably too many times to count. Thankfully, He has always been faithful to give me a quick wake up call! My selfishness or pride of depending on earthly things, when I need to ALWAYS depend on Him first.
12. What did Keller mean when he said Christ’s peace is an intelligent peace, not a stupid peace?
The world’s peace is counterfeit (it comes from closing our eyes to the truth), it is “shiny” and it appeals to our pride and our desires that are short lived and self centered. God’s peace is dependable and eternal. His peace comes by being humble, contrite and opening our eyes to His truth. Truth only comes from God, but we sometimes fear giving up our control.
As Keller said, “Christian Peace arises from greater awareness of your true condition. If you’re a Christian, you’re adopted and accepted. You know that God is Holy, loving, wise and dependable. The more we think about the Word of God & His power & promises, the more peace we have.” (that is a loose quote)
FROM PATTI:
The world’s peace is counterfeit (it comes from closing our eyes to the truth), it is “shiny” and it appeals to our pride and our desires that are short lived and self centered. God’s peace is dependable and eternal. His peace comes by being humble, contrite and opening our eyes to His truth. Truth only comes from God, but we sometimes fear giving up our control.
So good…Amen!
Patti, this is so true…” Pride took her away from the dependence on her mom that she needed.”
You have such a way with words and getting down to the core problem. Pride…ugh😏
1. Why does the Bible assume that Christians will be sad? In another sermon, Keller said Christians will have more joy and more sorrow than unbelievers have. Why, do you think?
Because in this world, we will have trouble. Jesus Himself was called a Man of Sorrows. Christians will have more joy because we know we are small and we have a big God; we will have more sorrows because we care deeply about things of God.
2. What proof does He give that Christians are not to be happy, happy, happy all the time?
The Bible does not say anything about Christians being happy all the time. It says we will have troubles in this world.
5. What is the opposite of peace and how does he illustrate that with Adam and Eve? What was the moment their peace was broken? How can you apply this?
The opposite of peace is fear. Before sin, Adam and Eve run to God with anticipation. After they sinned, they ran away from God. The moment they told themselves, they don’t need God is when their peace was broken.
6. One of the lies that is told about Bible-believing Christians? (He refers to an article in the New York Times.)
7. How did the psychologist on the radio after the San Francisco earthquake answer the question about why we are so traumatized compared to our ancestors who buried half their children?
Our ancestors believe in a big God who cares for them and the world. We on the other hand, are traumatized by catastrophes because we think we can solve the world’s problems through sheer grit and determination, and when we can’t, we fall apart. We think it is up to us to solve the world’s problems.
Leaving today and my internet capacity may be limited for the next 17 days! I will try my best to comment once in a while. This study is helping me with the truth of God’s peace. “He brought me into a spacious place and He made my feet like the deer’s.” The psalmist I need this verse to help me navigate the airports! Smile. Thank you so much, dear friends, for your prayers!
May you feel God’s peace surround you in every situation. May you and Ruth have a rich, fun, safe trip with deep fellowship and lasting, loving memories. May it be a trip that draws Ruth closer to the Father. In Jesus name.
Prayers sweet Bing and amen to Judy’s prayer.
Dear Bing, Amen to the prayers of Judy and Sharon. May God hold you both close to His heart and give you safe travels, good connections, easy navigation of airports and times of good rest. May our Father keep you both in good health. May He fill your days with many joyful visits with family and friends.
Dear Lord, thank You for Bing and her daughter. Please bless their time together and keep them safe. In Your Holy Name. Amen.
Friday: Speaking Truth to Your Troubled Soul
17. What stands out and why?
It must be a priority and a necessity in my life to be in His Word and in prayer on a daily basis in order for the Holy Spirit to work in my life so peace will overcome fear (and a myriad of other reasons). I ashamedly say this is not always the case. I’m not beating myself up but, asking Christ to place a desire in my heart to have a hunger and a thirst for hearing from Him through His Word and speaking to Him through prayer.
18. How should Romans 8 be read?
Yelling!
Why?
If we belong to Christ, we’re no longer condemned. We have new life in the Holy Spirit. We have been made right with God. Christ loved me so much that He died for me (objective truth). I am a child of the King, an heir and nothing can separate me from the love of God! These things are so wonderful that we should be yelling them from the mountain tops…WOW!
19. Take time now with anything you are anxious about and speak the truth to your soul using Scripture.
Lord, I tend to get anxious about the future for my grandsons. Your word says in Philippians 4:6-7 that instead of being anxious I should pray, petitioning, praising and thanking You and if I do this I will experience Your peace, which exceeds anything I can understand. Your peace will guard my heart and mind as I live in Christ Jesus. Thank You for Your mercy, grace and love that is extended to me. Amen
Thursday: Christian Peace
Listen or read up to 26:52
13. What stands out and why? – I continue to get amazed and God and all he had planned out from the beginning. How the world can think there is no God just baffles me. His plan all along, for us to have true godly peace, was to have Jesus come to this world and walk among us. And then give the ultimate sacrifice of dying on the cross in my place so I can have the true and inconceivable peace that only He was able to give. It all had to happen just like God planned, for us to live in peace. Just amazing!
14. What did Jonathan Edwards say? – He said that “Christian peace and only Christian peace is a reasonable peace.”
15. What are some ways Christian peace is opposite to the world’s peace? (Psalm 46) – God’s peace will not change even though the world and our circumstance change. It is a constant and steadfast peace that is not based on worldly circumstances.
16. What did Keller mean when he said this peace that Jesus gives is like his “last will.” You won’t get it until He dies. Why? – Because he LEFT us his peace, he had to die for us to get it. It is the only way we could get what his will and testament was created for. Our godly, unchanging peace is now ours because of His death on the cross. WOW, what would this world be like if he didn’t die on the cross. Even those who believed in Jesus would not have peace if he didn’t put himself on the cross for us. This is something new for me to ponder.
Friday: Speaking Truth to Your Troubled Soul
Listen to the end.
17. What stands out and why? – I have come to see, that the way the Word is read makes a difference in my heart knowledge. I can’t be reading it just to say I read it. I need to slow down, put emphasis where emphasis is needed and get the deeper context of each verse. God intended for His Word to be known and understood, not just read.
18. How should Romans 8 be read? Why? – We need to be shouting it out with conviction so we can feel and know just who we are in Christ and who He is in us. We need to own Romans 8.
19. Take time now with anything you are anxious about and speak the truth to your soul using Scripture. – Lord, people close to me are struggling and it makes my heart sad. Bring peace to their hearts, mind and soul Lord to open their eyes to your word. Help them and me to feel your presence as they walk the journey you have them on. Help me to know how to help them and sit with them, pray for them and just be there to listen. We all need your healing Lord in many different ways, and we all need to feel your loving arms around us. Your peace is unstoppable, help us to receive it. In your mighty name I pray. Amen.
Oh, I love this, Julie! Amen! I can’t be reading it just to say I read it. I need to slow down, put emphasis where emphasis is needed and get the deeper context of each verse. God intended for His Word to be known and understood, not just read.
13. What stands out and why?
Christian peace is constant and rational.
14. What did Jonathan Edwards say?
Jonathan Edwards said that Christian Peace is Reasonable and Rational Peace; It is constant.
15. What are some ways Christian peace is opposite to the world’s peace? (Psalm 46)
The world’s peace (the peace of stupidity) is based on circumstances that can change quickly, like bubbles in the water, the circumstance of the world are always temporary. It is intermittent and irrational. Christian peace is reasonable, constant and relentless. No matter what happens on this earth, God is unchanging, even when the body dies. Christian peace is based on things that will never change.
16. What did Keller mean when he said this peace that Jesus gives is like his “last will.” You won’t get it until He dies. Why?
It is like Jesus’ will and testament to us. It is the legacy of His death. With His death, He paid every debt and requirement we have before the Father. It is a clear deed and title He gave us when He gave His life on the cross.
9. Why is it that moving away from God increases rather than decreases fear? We discover when trouble and tragedy come we really are not in control. We then have no where to turn for the assurance, peace and strength we need to get us through the situation. So with no Rock to cling to you fear the future is or maybe even what tomorrow will bring.
10. What was his point about the illustration of the little girl in Macy’s? What was her only way out of fear? That the little girl was lost but was afraid to ask for help What if they’re kidnapper? To ask for help she needed to find her way back to safety
11. Can you think of a time when you “let go of God’s hand” and suffered. Did you repent and go back to Him? Share. I spent a lot of years just wandering thinking I could live my life my way How foolish of me. Need for help for a family member brought me to my knees
12. What did Keller mean when he said Christ’s peace is an intelligent peace, not a stupid peace? Jesus’s peace means opening our eyes to truth and to how much we need Him and that He can and will guide us. Instead of the world’s peace which encourages you to ignore or numb your senses to truth.
Beautifully said, Judy: Jesus’s peace means opening our eyes to truth and to how much we need Him and that He can and will guide us. Instead of the world’s peace which encourages you to ignore or numb your senses to truth. Praying for you as you deal with this time of loss.
13. What stands out and why? That Christian peace is constant and relentless. I like that it’s relentless It means to me if I don’t have it, I need to search myself and see where I have sinned and let fear creep in
14. What did Jonathan Edwards say? Christian peace and only Christian peace is a reasonable peace
15. What are some ways Christian peace is opposite to the world’s peace? (Psalm 46) we know that God is our Refuge so when tragedies strike we can cling to Him and His solutions. We can rest in He is God The world will keep searching and working and warring because their peace is based on changing circumstances
16. What did Keller mean when he said this peace that Jesus gives is like his “last will.” You won’t get it until He dies. Why? Christ left it to me at the great price of His death and payment for my sin giving me peace with God and adoption as His daughter.
SATURDAY:
20. What is your take-a-way and why?
—Not able to complete the last of the questions but what a wonderful week of study on God’s peace and the excellent sermon by Keller to remind us of our only real source of peace. We will find no peace if we search horizontally. It is only found vertically by looking upward to God. As we learned this week the world tries to offer peace through our circumstances but God gives us peace from the Holy Spirit directly onto our hearts. And most importantly Christian peace or God’s peace is the antidote to all our fear. What wonderful truths you immerse ourselves in.
I have a busy weekend. Our youngest daughter and family have been here all week which has been delightful but we are hosting a large family reunion tomorrow (Sunday) and some where I caught a cold and have a very sore throat. Taking cold drugs and managing to keep moving but trying not to expose everyone else. Looking to God for strength and wisdom. Thanks for your prayers.
Lord be with Bev today and this weekend. Remove any signs of this cold and sore throat. Let this reunion be a reflection of you through her. Be presents at this reunion Lord and touch the hearts of each and every person there. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
I join Julie in her prayer for good health and a lovely time at the reunion tomorrow, Bev. Love what you wrote about seeking peace vertically not horizontally. So good!!
9. Why is it that moving away from God increases rather than decreases fear?
We can’t be sure of the future. There is unrest. What if this, what if that? We are always wondering.
10. What was his point about the illustration of the little girl in Macy’s? What was her only way out of fear?
She was lost. She didn’t want to go back to her mommy, she wanted to go to the ice cream stand. She had no idea which way to go. The only way out is to go back to the mom and admit she was wrong. The only way to overcome the fear is to be obedient to God.
11. Can you think of a time when you “let go of God’s hand” and suffered. Did you repent and go back to Him? Share.
Yes. When my husband and I decided to move to the NE we did not consult in prayer with God, even though we were regular churchgoers. We just made the decision and left our home in Texas. It was a very bad decision. Our family suffered. We have repented, learned from the mistake and we will never do that again. God has blessed us since we recognized our mistake.
12. What did Keller mean when he said Christ’s peace is an intelligent peace, not a stupid peace?
It’s about opening your eyes to the truth, not closing them. You have a greater awareness of your condition. You are loved. You are accepted. God is holy and strong. He will help you. You know your future.
14. What did Jonathan Edwards say?
Christian peace is a reasonable, rational peace.
15. What are some ways Christian peace is opposite to the world’s peace? (Psalm 46)
The world’s peace says to stop reflecting so much because the world is an awful place. It is diseased and you don’t know why you’re here. You don’t know what you should spend your time doing. You don’t know right from wrong. The world’s peace is irrational. Christian peace is rational.
Christian peace is constant. It is based on things that will not change. The world’s peace is temporary. Your life changes here on Earth. Your life is built on circumstances on Earth.
16. What did Keller mean when he said this peace that Jesus gives is like his “last will.” You won’t get it until He dies. Why?
The peace of Christ comes only from Jesus dying. He fulfilled your debt. He has given us a clear deed into the adoption of the family of God. He left us peace!! We only get it because He died. Wow. I ever thought of that….
13. What stands out and why? The idea that as Christians, we are to think more about things not less. I always thought that thinking too much about something leads to overthinking and that can lead to immobility because you’re afraid of the possible consequence of any decision that you make. And that somehow thinking too much was a sign of not trusting God.
14. What did Jonathan Edwards say? “Christian peace and only Christian peace is a reasonable peace.”
15. What are some ways Christian peace is opposite to the world’s peace? (Psalm 46) Christian peace is constant, and the world’s peace is intermittent. Everything in this world will eventually end. Psalm 46 says that even though the mountains are cast into the sea (your strongest cause for earthly peace, things that won’t last) God’s peace is still there in the midst, it does not change.
16. What did Keller mean when he said this peace that Jesus gives is like his “last will.” You won’t get it until He dies. Why? Because it comes from the very act of Christ dying to pay the penalty for our sins. That is the never ending peace that we can have as Christians.
20. What is your take-a-way and why? How important God’s peace is to us. What a better world would be if all people relied on knowing God and having the peace that Jesus brings. The many problems our nation faces could be better resolved with His peace and perspective.
So true, Judy!
