SUNDAY:
- How have you experienced the love, mindfulness, or comfort of the Lord this wee
MONDAY: 1 John 2:7-11
Since Paige gave us the texts, I’m going to do this a bit differently. Read the text each day and I’ll give a few questions from both that, and from Paige, and look for your remembrances from Paige on this particular text.
2. What stands out to you from John 2:7-11 and why?
3. The book of Leviticus tells us to love our neighbor — so this is an old commandment. But what has changed (verse 4) to make it new?
4. Last week Paige made a difference in my life when she said that because our hearts are deceitful, if we ask if something is sin, we may rationalize that it is not. But if we ask if it pleases the Lord, we may realize our deceitfulness. If we ask is this how the True Light would walk, we see a difference. Can you give an example from your life where that might cause you to recognize deceitfulness inyour heart?
5. What does John say in verses 9-11 about the one who hates his brother?
6. Paige said if you are not loving someone, you are hating them. Thoughts?
7. What else from these verses stood out to you from Paige?
TUESDAY: 1 John 3:11-18
8. What stands out to you from the text and why?
9. Cain was the firstborn of humanity (Adam and Eve were not born but created from the dust and Adam’s rib). How do you see original sin in him.
10. Why did Cain hate his brother according to verse 12?
11. Paige said we may feel jealousy of the righteous. Thoughts?
12. What did Paige say it means if the world loves you?
13. What do we know if we love the brothers?
14. Paige brought out Francis Schaeffer’s The Mark of a Christian. What do you remember?
15. How did Christ exemplify love according to verse 16? How did Paige apply this to us?
16. What else from the text or Paige stands out to you?
WEDNESDAY: 1 John 4:7-21
17. What stands out to your from this text and why?
18. What does your practicum look lik
A.Authenticity (Father): See verse 7 — why should we love one another if we are authentic?
B. Priority: (Family) Since we are a family, who should we not love in the family of God? If you’ve read The Mark of a Christian — what do you remember?Father: Since we have been born of God, what should love flow from us to everyone in our path? (verse 7)
C. Integrity (Faithfulness) She quoted Karen Jones on how people define love in such crazy ways — even to justify sin. God’s love must be defined within Scripture’s definition of morality. Thoughts?
D. Liberality (Freedom) What did she mean We have the moneytree? She also said that the more we give the more we have. Have you experienced that? Explain.
E. Visibility (Fulfillment) How does 1 John 4:20 explain this? 3 marks: Continue in Word, bear fruit, love one another. Those things make your love visible. How are you doing? She mentioned Theo of Golden. Point?
F. Security (Fearlessness) (We will pick this up next week — perfect love casts out fear.)
19.. Paige said there are only four God is statements in the Bible. Can you list them, beginning with God is love? How do these four statements work together?
20. Why is it important to know you are beloved? Do you know this?
Thursday through Next Tuesday — Watch Paige and share your thoughts. I will post one more week with Paige and then we will be doing The Jesus Who Surprises — so get your book NOW! Thanks.

1. How have you experienced the love, mindfulness, or comfort of the Lord this week? I was reminded of this verse from two different and unrelated sources this week. It caught my attention because these have been life-giving words, especially in this past year. Psalm 73:26 “The Lord is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” I became curious about the word “portion” and discovered that the original meaning comes from the language of inheritance. Nothing earned. Simply given. I hope to participate in the upcoming study, The Jesus Who Surprises. I have missed this interaction.
I love that: inherited! Oh how wonderful it will be to have you, Nila, with us in The Jesus Who Surprises. You can bring us musical suggestions to go with the lessons! I might have to approve you if you give links, but I can do that. (The nonhuman filter is suspicious of links for they may go to products — so they make me approve them.)
Thank you Dee 🙂
Oh, Nila! Amen to Dee. Love this: ‘‘nothing earned. Simply given” . It will be wonderful to see you for the next study. I have missed you!
Oh, wow, Nila! I need to write that down. Psalm 73:26: “The Lord is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” I became curious about the word “portion” and discovered that the original meaning comes from the language of inheritance. Nothing earned. Simply given.
Love that you will be with us on the next study. Yes, on the music from you, as mentioned by Dee!
I’m looking forward to seeing you here again, Nila. I’ve missed your insights here.
SUNDAY:
How have you experienced the love, mindfulness, or comfort of the Lord this week?
Earthly goodbyes seem hard. After my dear friend Barb’s passing, I went to check on an older couple that I have been helping with chores. They are frail in health but have been at a senior complex for 5 years, choosing to live independently with some home care and meal assistance. They are of means but chose to live simply. After a fall on the wife’s part and a trip to the emergency room for the husband, their only daughter (who is a widow) decided to have them move in with her in her spacious house. I was so happy to hear this news for their sake.
In a span of three weeks, we have lost Barb, a couple is moving, and another lady moved to be closer to her daughter. There are a few snowbirds in our congregation as well.
I have been feeling the change in the season of life for Richard and me; the above significant changes have added some kind of melancholy to my spirit. Yet, the Word of God is living and active. He continues to illumine my mind to the faithfulness of His character. He is mindful of me and continues to give me a Godward perspective of life here on earth. And the hope of eternity with Him gives me courage to face each new day.
Dee, I am excited that we are doing “The Jesus Who Surprises”. A few years ago, I did the study with an elderly friend, Pat. She has now gone on to be with the Lord, but I remember sitting at her dining room table, sipping tea and eating some special treats she bought while we studied together. We both loved it!
Thanks for your encouragement, Bing.
We do enter into new seasons with some melancholy. Yet it is true God is faithful and you are an inspiration in how your press into the Word.
Awe, Bing. I feel you on the loss of your friend and changes of the like. My step-mom is still in rehab and on IV antibiotics until November 18 to fight the bacterial infection. She is 81 this year. I know we don’t have long with her and she is blessed to still be here. I am soaking up each day I get to visit with her and seeing that I won’t have her wisdom to lean on much longer. It is sad. But, as you say the hope of eternity with Him gives us courage for each new day. ❤️
I am also excited for the study coming up with “The Jesus Who Surprises.”
The melancholy seasons of change are so hard, but they do make us teachable. I am so happy for the couple, who will be with their daughter. It will be lovely for all of them. A nice community.
I, too, am so excited for “The Jesus Who Surprises!” I love that book, Dee! ( I already pulled my book out!)
SUNDAY:
How have you experienced the love, mindfulness, or comfort of the Lord this week?
The Lord is present in so many ways this week. I’m enjoying The Lectio 365 app for Morning, Noon, and Evening prayer times. It can be a challenge to get each one in, but I find it is a good habit to keep me focused on the Lord in a more intentional way throughout the day. When I pray with this app, I’m not focused on my needs, but on God. The format is PRAY: PAUSE, REFLECT, ASK, YIELD. I’m trying to make this part of the rhythm of my day. One of the comments in Paige’s teaching that really stood out to me is a lie that I think everyone falls into when we blame our circumstances for our ability to love others or not. She says, “Our love is not determined by our circumstances BUT by the nature of the Father. 1 John 4:11 “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” She goes on to teach that “ought” is not saying we should but rather we will, because the father’s love is a part of us as believers. Does our love match His? Does it meet a need and is it sacrificial? His love is lavish and we can be lavish with his love that he has given to us. I’m trying to see this way of thinking about love and apply it in my life.
V. 10 “Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.” This is where I want to be. I want to abide in the light and have no cause for stumbling, but the stumbling part is what gets me. Does this mean we don’t lapse? Ouch. Hard teaching.
3. The book of Leviticus tells us to love our neighbor — so this is an old commandment. But what has changed (verse 4) to make it new? I am not sure which verse this refers to but I believe what has changed is that God’s spirit now lives in us. We have the power to abide in Him and love others as he does.
The lovely Halloween week is here and don’t you know we are having conversations again with the little ones. They want to have fun dressing up and getting candy, but there is that line we can cross with it. Back when I had to find the “line” I was brought to the scripture in Samuel 28 where Saul seeks out a medium to ease his fears about the Philistines. It’s so important to remember that the spirit world is real and communicating this to our kids is a challenge with all there is today to distract us into thinking “it’s okay”. I just heard “Casper the Friendly Ghost” song on my son’s Yoto player and so we need a conversation about this now. It’s a constant abiding in the word in order to battle the world, no matter the topic of deceit. My dear sister-in-law is battling a teenage daughter who is challenging her authority as a parent and poking holes in her faith (legitimate concerns there, but…) She has discovered that her daughter’s friend has been using tarot cards and casting spells on the family. They have been battling spiritual things going on in the house. This stuff is REAL. This is one area I find the enemy still tries to work his way in and the best defense is the word. There are MANY churches this year in our area with trunk or treats for the kids. They are trying to keep Halloween “safe” for kids and I hope spiritually safe as well as physically. Sorry, this is a bit of a rabbit trail.
I so agree with your views on Halloween, Chris. I have never been a fan, yet I am going to a Halloween party with my daughter and her husband. It is just a dress up potluck. Some of my grandkids love the fun side of Halloween, but my heart is always apprehensive with the whole week before Halloween. I don’t like masks, especially clowns….and some of the really creep ones. I feel that the fine line, has blurred and I try to avoid it. I usually get a fun big treat or make small bags of treats, and deliver them to kids I know. Thankfully, most of my old and my current neighborhood do trunk and treat.
Chris and Patti,
Our neighborhood has been known to be a popular place for treats even before we moved here. Richard and I don’t do scary stuff, but we do hand out candy to any kid who comes to our door. We also put a small tract inside the bags and try to greet everyone who comes. It has been a joy seeing children and families and getting to know some of the people in our community. Our community does have a few groups who do the spooky stuff, and we don’t participate in those.
