On Monday and Tuesday I’ll give some background to John. Then I suggest you watch her live or on You-Tube. (I’ll give the You-Tube address Wednesday afternoon.) I will break up her lecture into four parts.
John’s Gospel and John’s 1st letter have very different purposes. John’s Gospel was written so that we might believe, and in believing have life! I always remember my friend Debbie in our beginner’s Bible study on the first 5 chapters of John. This was her reaction to John’s prologue.
Debbie came to faith and now, with the help of John’s 1st letter and other Scriptures is becoming like Jesus by keeping herself from idols, though she says it is a bit like this game, for she whacks one idol and another pops up! (It’s hard not to love Debbie!)

I love the quote from Debbie and the picture of the “Whack-A-Mole”! They made me smile wide!
I woke up after three this morning, and my mind wandered to past regrets. Frustrated at the possibilities of a slow Sunday, a headache, and maybe an irritable posture toward life, I tossed in bed. Then I realized that is where the enemy would have me! So, I whacked him and proceeded to get out of bed.
I went quietly to my office next door, sat at my desk, and started thumbing through our Bible Study while mumbling a prayer to God for help. It was still very dark outside, but when the first LIGHT of God’s Word in John hit my eyes, I realized God answered my prayer for help. It was a wonderful hour and a half with Him until I heard Richard stirring from the other room.
I have found that I have a choice to depend on God daily, regardless of how petty I can be first thing in the morning. I am loved unconditionally and provided for even when I don’t deserve it.
Bing, I love your visual language…”I whacked him!” I can only imagine how good that felt, but even better…God’s answered prayer. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

How have you had success in whacking an idol and experiencing more of the presence of God? (Or, how have you simply been blessed by Him? Here is the short version without the gory details: On Thursday I was helping at a benefit dinner at church (to support our local food bank), and I was getting a little upset. A friend noticed and asked if I was okay. I blurted out my “feelings,” and she kindly responded. I thought about what she had said and was convicted of my selfish, controlling attitude. I continued working, feelings under Godly control. Later when I took my dinner break, this same friend sat down by me and proceeded to tell me how she had addressed my “feelings” with another person, “but I am not going to stay in the middle,” she said. I was dismayed that she had even spoken to anyone else.
Later that evening I spent much time in prayer wondering “Was I now going to be gossiped about? “Was someone going to be offended by me? How could my friend have even spoken?” After venting to the Lord, I was silent and the Spirit brought all the scriptures we have been looking at to mind. I looked honestly at my heart, acknowledging my idol of pride/control and confessed with tears – Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, walk in the light as He is in the light – oh, the peace that came to me! The Lord then gave me the peace to face any problems that might arise.
Oh Cheryl, such honesty and a tender heart…thankful for His peace that came to you.

Dee, I’m glad you had a break if that is what kept you from putting up our bible study. I was praying for tech challenges in case! This week’s blog was a huge blessing to me as I shared Saturday. In addition, my oldest son took my youngest for the day yesterday, rather unexpectedly. It was lovely to have an uninterrupted Sunday nap and some time to begin cleaning off our bookshelf for school and just plain rest. I had a lovely walk with the dogs and a look around my garden that is coming to an end. We were able to finally pick the prized watermelon and have it for lunch! It’s so satisfying to eat something you’ve been watching grow and protect from pests in your garden for months. All the tending of the garden reaps a delicious reward. I often think about the analogy of sin in our life with the weeds in my garden. It must be tended daily or it grows into a BIG mess and it’s almost impossible to find the vegetables. That’s how it is with my potatoes and tomatoes right now. While I was laid up with back pain, my gardening fell behind and I have never fully caught up. It’s a sad sight! Some weeds are easy to pull and some are near impossible. Like Bing, I’ve been struggling a bit emotionally (it helped me to get out of bed in the night as well!) and this I see as a weed that is hard to pull at times. I have to work hard at whacking it down and filling myself up with truth. 2 Cor. 12:9 -my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness…Psalm 42-why are you downcast my soul? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. His Eye is on the Sparrow, and I know he watches me!

—As I looked at the blog this morning and read through the comments I was impressed with all the mole (idol) whacking going on! 😊 And blessed to read how God in his faithfulness to us keeps bringing encouragement.
I was encouraged by this quote from my devotional reading this morning.
“Joy is the experience of knowing that you are unconditionally loved and that nothing—sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death—can take that love away.” —Henri J. M. Nouwen
The writer of the devotional closed his comments with these thoughts.
Your Father “calls you by your name” (Isaiah 45:3 NASB). He knows your past, present, and future better than you ever could and loves you because “God is love” (1 John 4:8).
Brennan Manning asked, “Do you really accept the message that God is head over heels in love with you?”
I was reminded I need to walk today in the light of his love. 💕

2. Read John 21:18-23
A. What did Jesus tell Peter about his death? That Peter would be girded/tied with bonds and led to his death (execution). Peter would die for his faith in Jesus.
B. What did Peter ask Jesus about John and how does Jesus respond? Peter wanted to know what would be John’s fate. Jesus replies, in my vernacular “that’s not your concern.” If I (Jesus) want John to live until I return, what is that to you (Peter)? Follow me (Focus on me/Jesus).
Historians say that Peter was crucified upside-down, for he didn’t feel worthy to die as his Lord had. John lived past all his martyred brothers, for God had a purpose for him. Historians say he lived to an old age on the Island of Patmos, surviving being boiled in oil.
3. What does John say was his purpose in writing his gospel according to John 29:30-31? There is no John 29, so I went with John 21:24,25. John says that he was an eye witness of his account and that what he related was true. He further states that what he wrote is just a small part of all that Jesus had done. The purpose therefore was to call on us to believe in Jesus as the Son of God, Our Savior.
4. Why did Lewis say we shouldn’t spout any patronizing nonsense about Jesus being just a great moral teacher? Jesus WAS a great moral teacher, BUT He also claimed to be God (before Abraham was, I AM; I am the light of the world, bread of life, etc). He claimed that no one comes to the Father BUT BY ME. He said, I am the resurrection and the life. Jesus performed many miracles.
You cannot take just a portion of His life, you must look at ALL of it. Therefore, Jesus is lying about His claims to diety, or He is delusional, or He is who He claims to be, LORD.

am not sure I am very good at “whacking” an idol. This takes time. I do believe I am led by Him now, more than being led by myself. I have given Him the control (mostly, as I do make mistakes at times) of my life.

He says that he recorded these things as a witness to them. They are accurate. He says there were so many other things that he wouldn’t be able to fit them all. There would be too many books.

I’m not sure I remember his words on this. I know it was the liar, lunatic, Lord writing but I can’t remember the exact text though. Jesus performed miracles. People saw Him do so. That has nothing to do with being moralistic. He claimed He was the Son of God. People saw Him get baptized and heard God’s voice in agreement. They saw Him after the resurrection (more than 500) with His stigma intact. If He was just a great moral teacher then how did all these other events come to be, where many people were involved?

John is giving his own eyewitness account of Jesus’ life. And there are many other things that he did not include because there were too many to write about. I could just imagine if John were in Jesus’ company for almost all the 3 years’ time, what stories he could have told of each life that was touched by Jesus!
I thought of Theo of Golden and the people who were highlighted to a deeper degree by his presence and influence in the book. The same could probably have been told of the others, but Allen Levi ran out of words! Or pages!
I bet Dee could have written more for her book, He Calls You Beautiful, but could only stop at so many pages. For what kind of book word count would a writer aim for the One who is everlasting?

One of the dear ladies in my local study group has not had any contact with her son in three years, and her heart aches to know how he is doing. Tommy and his wife and 2 children moved suddenly to California and cut off all contact with his mom.
Cheryl, I’m praying for your friend now-that her son would reach out and restore relationship or that she would hear of them somehow. How hard to have such an abrupt loss.

He’s writing to…
Those who are God’s children because their sins have been forgiven through Jesus (vs 12) and they know the Father (vs 14).
Those who are mature in the faith because they know Christ who existed from the beginning (vs 13 & 14).
Those young in the faith because they have won the battle with the evil one (vs 13 & 14). They are strong. God’s word lives in their hearts (vs14).

Warning of the antichrist coming and many such antichrists have already appeared . From this we know the last hour is come.

So they wouldn’t be surprised if the world hates them.

Jim and I have been praying for His wisdom and direction in finding a church. It has been an interesting journey as we narrowed it down to two. I could sense that Jim wasn’t comfortable with the church we were leaning towards for reasons I won’t go in to. I wasn’t comfortable with the other one. Oh my, what do we do? I asked God to work in my heart as to why I wasn’t comfortable and felt led to give it another try. I so desired to be where God wanted us and I believe He knew my heart and gave me a whole different outlook when we revisited. What made me uncomfortable had completely changed/taken away and I knew this was where God wanted us to be…a confirmation of “yes” to my prayer.

How he addresses them…God’s children, mature in the faith, young in the faith and those who believe in the name of the Son of God.

Believers have overcome the wicked one through strength in the Word. Younger believers now know the Father. All believers have obtained forgiveness throuhg faith.

7. And another according to 1 John 3:13? Don’t be amazed by how the unbelieving world dislikes/hates you. They do not recognize you as they fail to know Jesus (3:1). They more easily listen to worldy advice/wisdom, failing to hear the truth (4:5,6).
8. And another according to 1 John 5:13-15? Those who believe have eternal life. We can have confidence that God will hear and answer our prayers/petitions according to His Will.

Give an example of a prayer you made according to His will that was answered with “Yes!” Just as I was typing, Gary came and told me his pre-op appt with cardiology (clearance needed) was cancelled, and he could not get in until Sept. 28. The surgery is scheduled for THIS Thursday. Gary has been waiting a long time for this surgery on his knee. Having just read 1 John 5:13-15 I immediately went to prayer.
“Lord, Gary needs this surgery now. He is in so much pain. Please do something about this appointment. I know that if the surgery is delayed, You have a purpose for that. Please help.”
Within 5 MINUTES Gary got a call saying that he could see a cardiology PA THIS AFTERNOON.
The Lord had everything already in control, but I did not know that. He answered my prayer while I was praying, before I even asked He was saying “YES!”
10. How can you tell that this letter is written to believers? John uses the word “we,” identifying himself with the readers. We have fellowship.., we walk in the light…, we confess our sins…, we know…, we are the sons of God…, we shall be like Him…, etc.

Today, I brought flowers from my garden to the elementary school’s teachers’ workroom. I have done this before as a welcome back to the staff, and it has been well received. Before I drove to school, I prayed that if it is His will, God would allow me to meet two specific staff members who have been on my heart. And I did! The short conversations I had with both were more wonderful than I could have asked or imagined. I also saw a couple more who were not on my “list” but felt like our paths crossing were God-ordained.

Tuesday: John’s Purpose for his 1st Letter
5. What are some of the reasons John gives for writing this letter in 1 John 2:12-14?
—John is acknowledging and reminding the believers of who they are as children of God. Their sins have been forgiven because of Jesus and Satan has been defeated.
6. What is another reason given in 1 John 1:18? 2:18
—It is the last hour, in other words the last days before Christ will return and they/we needed reminded there are many false teachers / antichrists and to beware of them.
7. And another according to 1 John 3:13?
—He makes it known the world will hate them as believers.
8. And another according to 1 John 5:13-15?
—Verse13 is the most wonderful verse on assurance of salvation. He was writing to let them KNOW they had eternal life by believing in Jesus. Not just wonder or hope but to KNOW. And then in verse 14 & 15 the importance of answered prayer which is the result of asking according to his will. “Thy will not mine be done.” These verses give us assurance and confidence in our relationship with Jesus.

—It has actually been a process and involved many other answers to prayer in the whole moving process. First it was a yes that we should move and then a big yes when He sold our home and yes in how He led us in buying our current townhome. Interestingly there were a couple of nos that kept us from buying the wrong home. But there was a big yes in how He protected and directed us in the whole process. As Sharon said to Cheryl “what an amazing God we serve.” 😊
10. How can you tell that this letter is written to believers?
—John addresses them as my dear children and as friends often throughout the book. Also he calls them brothers and sisters.
In chapter 3 he identifies them as children of God. The last verse of the book he calks them dear children.

Wednesday 20 minutes of Paige
The gospel of John presents Jesus so we might believe and have eternal life. 1 John is written so that as believers we might “know that we know.” I like the way points out that these two books “echo” each other. 1 John 1:1 always makes my heart thrill for John to have seen, heard, and TOUCHED Jesus. Who better to confirm our own faith?
Is is cultural Christianity or is it false teaching? Spending winters in SC I have seen Bible slogans/teaching on everything, as Paige mentioned: mugs, tea towels, bumper stickers, etc. Where do people get their teaching and ideas about Jesus? I am thankful for solid Bible teachers who point to the Bible for all teaching.

John’s letter was written (mostly) to the people of Ephesus, whom he loved.
He writes a very long introduction that is about a person; Jesus!

I love that Paige related the gospel of John and the First Letter of John, with the former talking about our faith and then the latter about life for those of us who believe.

Beware: Is it cultural Christianity or false teaching?
AI? As a source? This type of intelligence is fast taking over humans having to use their brains! I have noticed that The Gospel Coalition has articles that emphasize that the writings on the website were written by humans and will be written by humans, not by a “bot”. May the Lord make it so and preserve the integrity of our Christian brothers and sisters who write for the website. Above all, of the Word as God intends it to be. I have to remind myself not to be overcome by fear for the future. I need this study to remind me of whose I am and that God has me in His grip. “He will hold me fast,” as the song goes.

Wednesday-Share two things here that particularly stood out and why. The gospel of John was written to make believers and the letter from John was written to believers. Same author 2 different, but connected messages.
There is no hint of persecution from the community. John’s letter was written to warn against the dangers of false teaching. It is so hard to discern sometimes whether something that you never realized before is spiritual maturity and God is opening your eyes, or if it false teaching and God’s word is being subtly twisted.
How have you had success in whacking an idol and experiencing more of the presence of God? (Or, how have you simply been blessed by Him?).
I have been so blessed to have my daughter, Dawn, with me for the past month. We enjoyed every day to the fullest. Her love for the Lord has blossomed in so many ways! She shows God’s love to every one she meets. It is such a joy to see how see embraces others, listens to their stories and loves them unconditionally. I can see Jesus is all she does. She struggled in her younger years, so this is a huge gift to both of us from our Father in Heaven. He opened her beautiful heart. How I thank God for her.

A. What did Jesus tell Peter about his death?
Peter would be arrested and would be crucified.
B. What did Peter ask Jesus about John and how does Jesus respond?
Peter asked about what would happen to John. Jesus replied that John would remain and that Peter should not concern himself with what He asks of John.
Historians say that Peter was crucified upside-down, for he didn’t feel worthy to die as his Lord had. John lived past all his martyred brothers, for God had a purpose for him. Historians say he lived to an old age on the Island of Patmos, surviving being boiled in oil.
3. What does John say was his purpose in writing his gospel according to John 29:30-31?
John wrote the gospel because he was a witness to the account of all that happened, as he followed Jesus. He experienced the truth of it.
4. Why did Lewis say we shouldn’t spout any patronizing nonsense about Jesus being just a great moral teacher?
C.S. Lewis said to call Jesus merely a moral teacher, was ridiculous, because He claimed to be God and that would force people to believe He was either a deceiver, a liar, of truly the Messiah. Everything else is trivial compared to who He truly was, the Son of God.
Thursday Paige Part 2
I was wondering about the timeline of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians and John’s letter. I’m thinking John’s letter was years later than Paul’s. Paul also spent years in Ephesus. So it makes perfect sense that there would be those who left the fellowship and the influx of false teaching John talks about. I liked how Paige pointed out the question, Is He real, and the true facts that John lays out., “the historical manifestation of the eternal.” Historical evidence is what supports our belief and claims about Jesus.
It was concerning when Paige talked about people who don’t care about the true Jesus, “as long as he helps me.” You can say whatever you want, as long as you say “that is my truth.” People can fabricate their own version of the truth, and I need to be able to say, “Not true, the Bible says…”
Quite sure John was the last — the Lord kept him alive after all the others had been martyred
5. What are some of the reasons John gives for writing this letter in 1 John 2:12-14?
He is assuring them that their sins have been forgiven, regardless of their stage of spiritual maturity or age. To fathers, young men, little children…perhaps by age or spiritual maturity. Because they know the Father. Those who know Him, who has always been. Those who have overcome the evil one, those who have been strong and the Word of God abides in you.
6. What is another reason given in 1 John 1:18? Because it is the last hour. (1John 2:18)
7. And another according to 1 John 3:13? Because the world hates you.
8. And another according to 1 John 5:13-15? So that you may have eternal life.
9. Give an example of a prayer you made according to His will that was answered with “Yes!”
I had 3 guests (in addition to my daughter) for the weekend: the parents and brother of my granddaughter’s husband. I had met them, but did not know them well. I knew they were Christians. I prayed that the Lord would be very present and that we would all be relaxed and enjoy one another. I was very nervous.
We had the most wonderful and bonding weekend. I rode with them to family get togethers, we talked for hours about the Lord and many things. We ended up adopting each other for family. My daughter, Dawn, was still here, so we both got to know them. What a wonderful “Yes”. Truly a “kiss from the King!” Thank you Lord.
10. How can you tell that this letter is written to believers?
It points to spiritual growth in stages and reassurance of strength through God to combat the evil one. It demonstrates the power of abiding in God’s Word, knowing His Word, and having His Word dwell inside our hearts. 1 John 5:18-21 speaks of knowing we are from God, Who gives us understanding and truth, Jesus was born of God, He is the One who is true, and He will help us guard our hearts from idols and false gods. We have the One true God, and Christ, and through Him, we have eternal life.|
I would have been nervous, too, Patti! I do not know that I would have prayed though, probably just cleaned my house to make sure everything was “just so.” Your “kiss from the king” has shown me that I NEED to pray when having company BEFORE they come. It sounds like it was a truly wonderful time.

Thursday-Share two things here that particularly stood out and why. 1 John isn’t introducing anything new, or reprimanding anyone. It’s just reminding believers of who Jesus is and how we should live. When I find myself drifting into old ways of dealing with things or looking at things negatively, I have to remind myself of these 2 things.
“If the bible isn’t factually true, we among all people are to be most pitied.” I’m thankful that we have the bible, that we have portions in it were written by people who were there when Jesus walked the Earth, that there are historical writings separate from the bible that also mention people, places and events that are in the bible.

Many years ago I had a book titled, “The Bible as history,” and My son’s teacher accepted it as a refernce book for a report on Egypt (public school, 6th grade). There is so much historical/physical evidence apart from the Bible, as you mentioned Dawn. A fact that has stuck in my mind from reading that book so long ago is that there is actually a canal in Egypt called “Joseph’s canal,” Bahr Yussef.
Love it. I learned archeologists use the Bible to find things! It’s so accurate.

I loved that Paige said “bring all your burdens and junk in, you don’t have to leave them at the door.”
A. There are coordinating purposes in 1 John and the gospel of John.
1. John has witnessed these things and he is writing them down for those he loves, so that they may believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
2. And that by believing, we may have eternal life. It is a letter of assurance to believers.
B. Paige points out that this is a circuit letter sent to other churches, because there is a danger of the infiltration of false teachers….subtle in twisting the gospel to fit the surrounding culture. It is a warning to beware of cultural Christianity or false teaching.
Why?
All of this is still relevant in our culture today. I love what she mentions, and Bing also points out, that so many get their view of Jesus from mugs, bumper stickers, and Christian influencers. This is one of the most toxic things happening now is the Christian Influencers.
Friday Paige Part 3
What captured my mind first was that Jesus is the unique, eternal, prexistant Son of God. What is God like? He’s just like Jesus. It is essential that we see John is testifying to this, and it places Jesus far above any other person/leader (Mohammed, Confuscius, Abraham, etc). No one can compare to Jesus. There is no person (past present or future) that can take precedence over Jesus. That includes Billy Graham, Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, political leaders, ANYONE. If what they say does not line up with the Word of God and exalt Jesus Christ, it is false.
John is saying, “This is not just Jesus; it is MY Jesus.”
2. “So what? So that…” invitation to fellowship. It stood out to me when Paige said that Jesus came to pursue us. It’s not just that people saw, heard, and touched Jesus. Jesus saw, heard, and touched people. He pursues ME, through the Holy Spirit, always reaching to me. Oh the Love of God!
Now I can say, “This is MY Jesus.”

Jesus came. John saw Him, heard Him, and touched Him.
The Miracle of the Incarnation is that Jesus sees us, He hears us, He touches us. He desires a relationship with each one of us.
John wrote this letter as an assurance that we will see Jesus more clearly, hold on to Him more tightly and have fellowship and a relationship with Him.

Paige is so like drinking from a fire hose! Her ability to bring clarity and application in teaching God’s Word certainly excels most. Her comment at the start was “The Word is no older today than when John wrote it down. It is living and active.” She brings out well how it is completely relevant to us today.
The context and experience of the churches John was writing to is very much like ours today. And she says he writes because of the implication of the danger of false teaching. False teaching comes in subtle ways. Subtly there is a twisting of truth by our culture. She asked Who instructs us about Jesus? We are to beware of cultural Christianity because it often contains false teaching. The personal challenge comes in determining if what I see and hear about Jesus is true or does it just suit me.
The buzz word today has become “my truth”. Believe no longer means basing belief on the factual truth but now is put in the context of being subjective and personal.
She went further in her challenge after explaining John’s testimony in this passage of being completely factual and true to the confronting question of do we really care if He is true? Her statement was that “we don’t care if it is true if it is helpful or comforting to us”. In other words we just want a Jesus who makes us feel better. Her challenges about Cultural Christianity are a good reminder to me personally to listen closely to what I hear and ask if it is real because Jesus is very real and I truly want to line up with Him and his truth. To build on Paige’s teaching on this scripture I want to be theologically solid on the authority in the significance of Who Jesus is. She said the Christian faith is about Christ.
John is proclaiming Jesus.
The purpose is to”So that you might have relationship “ so that He might be everything to us.
The invitation is to relationship and to fellowship.
She gives a new and far deeper meaning to the word fellowship.
The communion of the saints goes far deeper than donuts.
I must stop for now but I could go on and on with what I gained from this lesson so far.
I stopped listening last night at the place where she said “What is the DESTINATION at the end of the long one sentence in verse 4?
JOY!”
I have a pretty good feel for where she is going with this thought because in one of the very first studies I listened to she talked about Joy and I remember it well. It left a deep impression on my heart that it was for the Joy set before Him that Jesus endured the Cross and that we are that Joy! It has given new meaning for me when I hear the word Joy.
I’ll finish listening to the rest of her teaching today and look forward to the upcoming lessons. 💕

Saturday Paige Part 4
“Jesus is the basis for our fellowship,” “it’s more important than any commonality that we have.” Statements like these echo with my own desire for true fellowship that is sadly rare in my life. This blog is an example of true fellowship, and we aren’t even in the same room! Our fellowship with the Lord clearly binds us together, as we share our lives and how the Lord is at the center.
I was caught up in the “your” and “our” controversy that Paige mentioned and was anxious to hear her thoughts. When she said it didn’t matter, that it was “complete joy in every direction,” my soul gave a sigh. Joy in my relationship/fellowship with the Lord that then spills over into my relationship/fellowship with my brothers and sisters. I had never thought about my connection to all the saints that have gone before me, but we are connected, through Jesus.
My God shot isn’t anything Paige has said, it’s that I’ve been reading 1 John 2X/day for weeks now, and I see something new each time. I KNOW that the Holy Spirit is opening my eyes and heart to more love and joy.
Cheryl, when I heard Paige say she wanted us to read 1 John many times, I thought of you and your big head start!!
Gives me goosebumps that I did, and then she asked us to that very thing. My, oh, my. It really has helped get going in the morning to see what new thing the Lord will show me today. Ending my day reading it, fills me with peace, and I nod off to sleep saying the verses I’ve memorized.

Things that stood out…
1. John is prompted to write this letter because there’s a danger of false teaching infiltrating the church. Twisting the truth to fit the surrounding culture. Where are we looking for our ideas about Jesus? Paige mentions Christian influencers…this stuck out to me because they are so rampant on Instagram and I’m sure Facebook and TickTock! Are we aligning what these “influencers” are saying with the Word? Is it “The” Truth, and not “my” truth?
2. The tone of this letter is pastoral. This is a letter of love, encouragement and shepherding. It isn’t combative or harsh correction. I am so thankful that I had the privilege of being under the pastoral love of my father-in-law and not because I was his daughter-in-law but because he understood the responsibility he had as a pastor/shepherd.
3. John going back to the beginning just like Genesis 1:1 is saying that the incarnation is just as significant as the creation.
4. What is God like? He’s just like Jesus! John knew Jesus, saw, heard and touched Him. John is proclaiming a person to them…this is his Jesus and therefore He is my Jesus too.
5. Her example of picking up her daughter at track and she complained because all they did was run…duh, what did she expect? So too, the Christian faith is all about Christ and this is the point John is making.
6. Jesus came to pursue me. He wants a relationship with me…He sees me!
7. Having fellowship with other believers isn’t just about eating together, or having a connection because of working together, living in the same neighborhood, dressing the same etc ,but all agreeing on Jesus…He is the basis of our fellowship. We get to know Him together, learn about Him together, talk about Him together,participate in Him together and serve in His name together. Paige talks about worshipping in a church where you don’t even know the language, but oh how you know you have Jesus in common…so true!
8. The more people that share this fellowship the more joy there is. And as Paige says, joy isn’t just a destination it’s an indication of what our relationship with the Lord is like. The only way to accomplish joy is to know Jesus…taste and see that He is good!

Since I watched Paige in one sitting after watching in 20-minute increments, I will just share what has stood out to me:
We have our way of interpreting the intro to the letter of John, but we need to look at it closely from his point of view as John’s intro.
I John 1:1 is deep, intense, and jam-packed with meaning. Paige’s way of expository teaching is marvelous not because of her gifting (although I am very thankful for that!), but because of how she uses her words to paint the truth of the most important person/Person we need-and that is Jesus.
Her outline is excellent, breaking down John’s proclamation as factual (proclaiming the historical manifestation of the eternal), theological (authority), and personal. And to wrap it up, the word “invitation” pulls them all together, which is my God Shot:
My God shot is that Jesus did not come just to appear to us but to pursue us! Hallelujah-what a Savior!
I lost all of my stuff, so I’m just going try and remember a little bit for Thursday’s lesson.
This letter refers back to John 1. John 1 refers back to Genesis 1.
John is writing for himself and the others. They were actual eye witnesses to Jesus’s ministry.
They were recording history for us. It was a fact that Jesus died on the cross. Many people saw this. It was more theology that he gave his life for us as sinners.
Jesus chose them to be His “explainers.”
Laura, I had forgotten the comment about the apostles being the “explainers.” It’s not just theology/doctrine but how it applies to us. Sorry yoiu lost what you had written, but I gained from what you DID post.
I just read through all the comments and watched the whole video of Paige’s teaching. Wow. So this is how it played into my life this week.
I have a daughter-in-law who has been struggling in her life and feeling slighted by my daughters at it seems every turn. What Paige said about joy hit the nail on the head with regard to this situation. Paige said an indicator of losing our joy is resentment towards those who do have joy. Over the last couple days we realized that she had been believing a lie from the enemy and began to feel hopeless in her life. My daughter had a talk with her about this last night and helped her see the truth and has made a plan to help her dig out from under the mess that her life has become. We are all so relieved to have an end to the drama and look forward to helping her live out the truth.
Sorry if this doesn’t make a lot of sense, but I’m short on time and giving you all the short version. I am so excited to get into the rest of Paige’s teaching on 1 John.

Do we fellowship on the basis that we believe in Jesus, or do we fellowship because we are with our “peeps?”
So funny, she mentions the word koininia (participate with, be in community with, etc.). I was a member of the liturgical dance group called The Kesheth Dancers in Dallas. A sister group was called Koininia. I haven’t thought of that group in 30 years!
We have an invitation, from him, to worship Jesus together. “The Communion of the saints…” don’t take it for granted.
The letter he writes for JOY. I happened to be wearing a For King and Country shirt that says “Joy.” Across the top. Love it. Do we have it? Do we know true joy??? Are we jumping up and down because of joy of Him? Are we sharing the joy together? If we don’t have it then it’s because our fellowship with Jesus is lacking. What did the angels say? “We give you good news of great joy…”
