Tara is taking us into a side-road by looking at James, who was the Lord’s half brother and an important part of the early church in Acts. Several of you were with us when we did James with Paige Benton Brown in the beginning of 2023. I still remember Paige saying, “James didn’t believe his brother was the Christ until the resurrection — but the resurrection pretty much does it!” (See Acts 12:17) We are going to break the book of James up into two weeks, and I’ll be sharing a few comments you made when we did James with Paige 3 years ago. James is very much about how to face trials, which are always in our lives, and seem to be increasing. James tells us to face them with joy for they will help us grow. Paige quoted her favorite, Corrie ten Boom:
You will never know the strength of your Anchor until you face the stress of the storm.

As you probably know, James letter was controversial because you could read it as a works-based salvation, but instead, it was we are saved by faith alone, but true faith is never alone. It results in fruit. The word “religion” which is “thrace-kos” (comes from the base of G2360 in Strongs which means ceremonious in worship) and occurs only once in all of Scripture, and that is in James, when he is calling out those who think they are religious, yet lack evidence. He says
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. (James 1:27 NIV)

Friday: Tara-Leigh Cobble
We’ll listen to Tara this week, She confused me a bit when she said James didn’t write this but “Jacabo” but what she meant was that “Jacabo” is the correct Hebrew name and the English translation is Jacob, and James is a mistake. But this is the half brother of Jesus. It is interesting to me that James, and some if not all of his siblings didn’t believe until the resurrection.

1. What stands out to you from the fact that the word “religion” is used only once in Scripture — and how James uses it?
I guess it’s not as important as other words where Jesus will say something three times, or God will continue to repeat the same idea over and over again.
When James uses it, though, he uses it for a very important reason which is to take care of people and to not get caught up in the world.
2. How have you seen God in your life recently in joy or in trials?
I find it really interesting that we are studying Acts this past week, and Paul and Barnabas are taking the message to the believers. They’re setting up the churches with elders, and even sent a letter (this comes later in the Book…I found this out by watching The Bible Project’s explanation of Acts, which Tara Leigh includes) to the jewish council stating that non-Jewish Christians did not have to follow the Jewish laws of circumcision, eating certain foods, etc..
Fast-forward to this past week in my church. We are questioning our leadership about different doctrine ideas in the church. We wrote a letter to express our concern and how we want to have a meeting. I just think it’s so funny that I’m reading about it in Acts, and it’s playing itself out in my life. Makes one tend to think….
Wow, Laura! It is interesting what is going on in your church coinciding with this study. Sounds like a God wink.
I’ve also been thinking about the church today and how we should follow the model set out in scripture. The disciples go to great lengths to make sure new converts are legitimate and churches are established with leadership.
So true Chris. Somewhere I read they waited three years to be sure of their salvation!
Laura, it is so funny to me how God guides our paths and everything always connects. Our pastor started a new sermon series on how we take common scriptures out of context and we don’t really see the whole. I’m excited to see which scriptures he dissects.
Sunday:
What stands out to you from the fact that the word “religion” is used only once in Scripture — and how James uses it? Interesting about the use of the word in Scripture and the way it is used. I typically have thought of this term in referring to a system of beliefs. For instance, what religion does one belong to: Christian, Buddhism, etc. James uses it to refer to how we should act: looking after widows and orphans and keeping ourselves from being polluted by the world. I might hear of a person today being described as a religious person based on their behavior. We do expect those in the church to take care of those in need and to keep oneself from the influences of the world, so in that respect it is the same. I expect it is only used once as this is not something we should focus on. Instead, Christ should be our focus. If we are loving God and loving people, our behavior will follow.
How have you seen God in your life recently in joy or in trials?
I have been struggling a lot in a trial which has gone on for years and I am finally coming to the conclusion that instead of trying to figure out an answer, I just need to accept the difficulty and look for God’s grace. His power is made perfect in my weakness. I think I keep trying to accept it and then start looking for answers again in this vicious circle as its the kind of thing that I have told the Lord is too hard to accept, but like Paul, he has not taken my thorn away. Instead, I will pour God’s promises into my heart and strengthen myself to stand under this hardship. If at some point He chooses to take away my thorn, I will praise Him; and if He chooses to leave me with the thorn to my dying day, I will still praise Him. It feels like my heart might break some days, but I have learned that he does not give us trials which we cannot persevere under, in His strength. It can be difficult to discern sometimes when something goes on for years and prayers go unanswered, but I think like Paul, I can safely say, trials keep me humble. Some days I just wish I could hear God the way Paul did.
Oh Chris — I can identify with your struggle. Lord, help us both — help our hearts.
I know Keller uses the word religion to express ritual and doing, doing ,doing instead of relationship and done (it is finished). It is interesting that the word is only used here satirically — as if they were concentrating on outward show without genuinely loving those in need.
Oh, Chris, my heart aches for you as I read this. You have shared about this before in some detail, but it has been so easy for me to foget about it. Your comments on the study questions have been positive and your everyday experiences show your stong Christian ethic. You don’t constantly focus on your trial, so I have fogotten about it and ceased to pray for you. I’m sorry.
Father, How easy it is for me to get wrapped up in my own life and forget what Chris has benn living with each and every day, for years. Forgive my blindness in this area, not only about Chris, but about other sisters, too. Lord, thank You for the written Word, and thank You Holy Spirit for bringing it to life for us. As Chris and all my sister on this blog live each day, grant us the grace we need and give us strength to face each day with joy in our hearts. I pray that each of us will see something today that gladdens our hearts as we look to You, Jesus. Thank You for Your unfailing love, faithfulness, and watchcare over us. amen.
Thank you for the reminder and the lovely prayer, Cheryl. I pray that we all will be sensitive to pray for one another here. Chris and Dee, I pray for breakthroughs in your ongoing trials. I know that we all have this struggle in some area of our lives. I will be praying that we will uplift one another in prayer and encouragement. So thankful for our faithful Father in Heaven. Lord, help our hearts.
Thank you, dear sisters. I do pray for God’s grace for each of us. We do each have our own trials and I don’t minimize anyone’s . I’ve made Psalm 42:11 the screen saver for my phone, along with 2 Corinthians 12:9. Scripture helps more than anything in the struggle and of course prayers from sweet sisters. Friday was a particularly difficult day. I’m sure that the enemy is taking full advantage of my weakness now that I’m going to battle for my son-in-law. So good to hear the truths we are learning here and to have the support from all of you. ❤️
Oh, dear Chris. You have so much going on! I am praying! It is like juggling 5 plates in air! all at the same time! A tsunami! I am praying that God will give you peace and rest. I am so thankful we are able to share our trials on this wonderful blog, of like minded sisters in Jesus. There is power in this prayer team.
3. Watch the cartoon overview of James from the Bible Recap. Scroll down on the Devotional and find it. What stands out to you and why?
Firstly, James is really Jacob???! I don’t ever remember hearing that.
I’m interested in that the book is sort of like Proverbs, in that it gives short snippets of wisdom, and it focuses on Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount. I tried to memorize the first part of this book before and probably got to about verse 7. Since I’ve never actually gone beyond that, I’m not sure that I have ever read the rest for understanding. It’s been a long time since we studied it with Paige. I’m going to see if I have notes somewhere, of her study. I think I have too much in my brain all the time and that makes me “forget.” This past week the You- Version app has had one of the Beatitudes as the verse of the day. Now I’m thinking, okay, these are overlapping for me so it must be important! Looking forward to re-learning!
I’m so glad, Laura – -I decided to have us slow down and look into some of the overlap with Sermon on the Mount and James next week — and James life and teachings. That is the point of a chronologicaly study!

3. I’ve been watching TLC on youtube, so I don’t see the other parts (ie devotional ,cartoons, etc). For this #3 I watched the animated video of James on the bibleproject. One statment near the beginning was that James wants to “…get in your business and challenge how you live.” In my words, James is getting down to the nitty-gritty of living.
4. Read James 1:1-18 and make observations. Then choose the one that stands out the most and share why.
testing/trials produces patience
God gives wisdom to those who ask for it (believing prayer)
wealthy position vs. humble faith
perseverance in trials/testing leads to crown of life
temptation comes from man’s own lust NOT from God
everything good/perfect comes from God (not men)
by His will we are born again “with the word of truth”
What stood out to me today was vs. 12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
My mind immediately went to Psalm 1 “Blessed is the man…,” and I realized a connection that it’s by refusing to walk in the way of the world and “delighting” in the Word and “meditating” on it is how I am able endure whatever comes my way in life. James is not saying “just be happy.”
great connection between Psalm 1 and verse James 1:12

Sunday:
What stands out to you from the fact that the word “religion” is used only once in Scripture — and how James uses it?
—Many many years ago I read a little book called “How To Be a Christian Without Being Religious”. It shaped my thinking in the right context of what it means to be “religious”. What James says in these verses affirm the fact that it isn’t ceremonial practices that matter in a believers life. Pure religious life as he calls it is not about the practice of any kind of rituals for believers because the Christian faith has to do with having new life. Wiersbe says it is a miracle, a new birth, a divine life and emphasizes James’s comment “If any man imagines himself to be religious, then let him prove it by the life he lives.” The examples James gives are a controlled tongue, sacrificial service to widows and orphans and having a clean heart. Those things are not formalities and ceremonial activities. They come from a changed heart that reflects God’s heart.
How have you seen God in your life recently in joy or in trials?
—This past Thursday to Saturday we met friends from Wisconsin in Omaha. We enjoyed some very sweet fellowship in the Lord. On Saturday we were traveling in the city and using our voice map to direct us to a destination. In the process we got derailed and made a wrong turn which caused us to randomly take another street from the opposite direction to get there. When we arrived we could see the road that we originally would have taken was completely closed and we would have lost a great deal of time finding our way back. We felt God sovereignly caused us to make what appeared to be a wrong turn but He was actually taking care of us. There are more details to the scenario but it was a real joy to see how our gracious Heavenly Father took care of us.
Thanks for sharing from that “little book” and Wiersbe, Bev.
Is this the book?
The picture I copied did not show up! It’s a study on the book of Romans by Fritz Ridenour. If this is the one, I think I will get it (very inexpensive online).
I loved that book — I was a pretty new Christian too. He was ahead of Keller in his view of “religious”
I love that book, too. I love how God directed you on the “wrong road” to get to the “right destination” Bev! Also left your analysis about religion,

be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath
be doers and not just listen to the Word (self-deception)
practice what you preach
Today what was impressed upon me was vss.19,2019
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
20For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
I have been dealing with a lot of anger, and although I don’t lash out verbally, I lash out mentally. I found that I’ve been very short-tenoered, and these verses confirm how wrong I’ve been. My women’s group at church has been praying for me, that the Lord would show me the root cause of this anger. Reading these verses again today underscores that my anger is in oppostion to God and unproductive (harmful to myself, even). The Spirit has convicted me of a few things, but I have more work to do.
Dear Cheryl, I so appreciate your openness about the anger problem. It’s easy to blame our circumstances on our anger, but not helpful. It’s good that you are searching for the root. I’ll pray for the Lord to show you. The study I am in currently, titled “Freedom in Christ”, speaks about the 3 main ways the devil tries to deceive us. He is crafty, but we know that the Lord will give us the truth and that truth will set us free. Keeping the spiritual perspective is so helpful. ❤️
I agree with Cheryl. You are humble and lovely — may God give you wisdom.
1. What stands out to you from the fact that the word “religion” is used only once in Scripture — and how James uses it.
James seems to be referring to outward appearances of rituals and public prayer, not lining up with a heart toward God. The inward focus of a heart loving and serving God, is one who hears the Word of God and obeys it in his actions, from his heart. (Unstained by the world.) A sinful man can do things to appear to be Holy and righteous, but if his motives are on self, he is deceived.(stained by and of the world). Hope this makes sense.
2. How have you seen God in your life recently in joy or in trials?
I do see the Lord in so many areas of my life, daily. I am trying to quit stressing, being anxious and fearful. I am letting go, praying and trying to leave my tears at the feet of Jesus. Some prayers our answered quickly other prayers will be answered in His time. I appreciated Chris mentioning, it is on His timeline, not on my timeline. Jesus is Lord. how glorious heaven will be when we are there, worshiping Him, healed from all our earthly pain and care..
Awe Patti, I love the picture of heaven that you paint for us. Why should I worry and fret when I can cast all my anxiety on Christ who cares for me (1 Peter 5:7)? Praying for you to have freedom from your anxieties. Your explanation of James use of religion makes perfect sense to me.
Oh Patti — may the Lord help us both to cast our widows’ anxieties on Him.

Interesting about James name being Jacob-I never knew that. Seems everyone in the bible has at least 2 names. It stands out to me that the whole book is outlined and then the first chapter is discussed last as a summary of the whole book. So interesting, as I have often been drawn to the book of James, and primarily the first chapter. I do love these overviews by the BIBLE PROJECT. They make a broad and sometimes confusing book have order in my mind.
4. Read James 1:1-18 and make observations. Then choose the one that stands out the most and share why.
-count it all joy in trials
-testing of faith produces steadfastness
-God gives wisdom, without reproach
-ask in faith, for doubt will get you nothing
-riches are not to be relied upon as they will perish with us
-God promises the crown of life to those who trust Him in trials
-temptation is not from God, but our own sin, beginning in desire and ending in death
-every good gift is from the Father, we are a kind of first fruit of his creatures whom he chose to bring forth by the word of truth.
It stands out to me that despite all of our many faults, He chose us. It also stands out that our faith is tested and there is much work to be done in us. Should we be surprised at the many trials?
Bing, how can we best pray for the Philippines ? Such a strong earthquake…have you been in touch with your family?
Sunday:
1. What stands out to you from the fact that the word “religion” is used only once in Scripture — and how James uses it? – With the word religion only being used once, it appears to not be relevant to our faith in Jesus and our relationship with him. It seems to me that it means ‘life’. How I live my life and what I believe to be true. That what I think is right is the way to be, yet it may not be what God has instructed me to do.
2. How have you seen God in your life recently in joy or in trials? – I’ve been dealing with two different states and needing paperwork from Alabama to give to Tennessee, and it’s been a long process of calling, waiting and waiting some more. I could feel myself getting anxious and not knowing where else to turn. I started praying and had a friend also start praying and the next call I made brought my peace back. Everyone has been helpful, but the many calls were getting to be a bit unnerving. God brought peace back to me through a couple of the people I had to talk to. Thank you, Lord, for being with us no matter the size of our problems.
I love that you went to prayer and friends. I’ve definitely been frustrated by this type of situation and found myself complaining instead of praying-just recently in fact. I need to follow your example.
Yes! Pray and pray. He loves us so.
Monday: Cartoon Overview and James 1:1-18
3. Watch the cartoon overview of James from the Bible Recap. Scroll down on the Devotional and find it. What stands out to you and why? – I don’t think I knew that James was also known as Jacob. Man, the names that are in the bible can be so confusing when they have multiple names used. What stands out to me is how committed James was to knowing the truth of Jesus and his ministry. He gave it his all and made sure he spread the good news to others. It doesn’t matter when you come into a relationship with Jesus, it matters that you give it your all.
4. Read James 1:1-18 and make observations. Then choose the one that stands out the most and share why. – I am grateful God chose me as one of his heirs to receive the blessings and promises that are mine to take. When I read vs 18 “He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.” This puts a whole new spin on being chosen as His heir. He has put me, all of us (believers) above everything he has created. He’s set us apart from all other things and people. He thinks of us as his firstfruits, his tithing to the world, his unblemished lamb. WOW, this makes me see how much more I need to be examining my heart and cleanse it so I can glorify him in my living and be his unblemished firstfruits.
Blogger Quotes from our past study with Paige on James 1: – These are all so good and fit into this discussion nicely.
Rebecca: God has built my muscle of dependance on Him in not doubting His character and in falling in His arms.
Laura: “We, out of all creation, became his prized possession.” (James 1:18 NLT) Wow. I am His prized possession.
Bing and Susan both liked a quote from Dr. Motyer: We live about what we love. The shape of our lives is determined by the joy of our hearts.
Patti: I couldn’t help thinking about why wealth and money can threaten our devotion to God
Oh, Julie! Such good points : it matters that you give Him your all! And we are His first fruits! Amen!
Yes! We are his prized possessions ❤️
Good reflections on our being His firstfruits.
4. Read James 1:1-18 and make observations. Then choose the one that stands out the most and share why.
There will be testing of faith; it produces endurance and steadfastness.
Ask for wisdom. Wisdom is different from knowledge; Wisdom is seeing truth, with spiritual insight from God.
Be humble, no matter your circumstances. Humility draws people to God and takes the focus off of self.
Wealth can be used for power, but it does not draw others to God. Seeking wealth is seeking the temporary fulfillment. Seeking Jesus is eternal.
Persevering through a trial, teaches you and gives you deep appreciation for what you have.
This stood out, because it is so subtle.
Temptation is never from God. God is the Father of Light. He does not deceive. His Word will expose the lies of the enemy. The enemy wears disguises.
Temptation plays on our strengths, our desires and our weaknesses. It is not wise to be too confident, because our strength can quickly become our weakness. I always need to be aware that I am never above temptation; The enemy is clever; even Jesus was tempted. Jesus is strong, but my earthly character can be vulnerable, especially if I am over confident of a strength. I can be carried away with my own desires and can convince myself it might be from God. Shut the door quickly and pray! It starts with lust, and gives birth to sin, then sin happens and it brings death….it is deception. Always stay in God’s Word and pray about everything.
100%!
Tuesday: James 1:19-26
5. Make observations on James 1:19-26 then share your favorite and why. – James is reminding those who are listening how to live in a godly and righteous way. He’s focusing on the anger that comes into our hearts and minds and how we put ourselves above others and claim to be the victim when we are lashing out right back at them because we have forgotten what the Word says. This whole section is a great reminder to us all that we need to look deep into our hearts before we throw out scripture to defend ourselves. Someone I’m acquainted with used James 1:27 to defend herself and made accusations of someone else that how could they not help the widow and orphan. Before I started this week’s study I went back to look a little more into this verse. From what I get out of it; it’s referring to the poor and the needy? I’m trying hard, especially now with the new sermon series our pastor started, to see just what or who scripture is talking about and how it is meant to be used. I’ve been praying for this person’s heart and mind to find truth and to find the peace that only God can provide and for him to guide me in what direction I should take, if any, with this situation that surrounds me and others.
Julie, I love the way you are researching who scripture is talking about and how it is meant to be used. I need to do that more. So good to have you here!
I agree!
I know exactly what you mean, Julie! We are beginning a church wide study of what it means to be a pastor/elder/deacon and such in our church. This is due to our pastors wife receiving her Masters in Divinity. Should she be able to preach to men is the question. It will be hard, but it is important too. We are digging into scripture, as you are, to understand.
4. Read James 1:1-18 and make observations. Then choose the one that stands out the most and share why.
James calls himself a slave to Jesus Christ.
James is writing to the 12 tribes of Jewish people who are scattered everywhere.
He explains that it is joy to have trials of every kind.
He says that when your faith is tested, you build endurance.
When you have built your endurance then you are perfect, complete, and needing nothing.
Ask God for wisdom.
Make sure your faith is in God alone. Do not waiver or you will be unstable in all you do.
God honors those who are poor and humbles the rich.
God honors those who are tested and are patient. They will receive the crown of life.
God does not tempt, it comes from our own desires which grow in sin.
Whatever is good and right comes from God.
He gave us birth with His Word.
We are His prized possessions!
I think the warning to not waiver and honor God alone stands out most to me. The world is so easy to buy into. I want to only have eyes for Him.
Great points. 😊
I love all of your points, Laura!🥰
Tuesday: James 1:19-26
5. Make observations on James 1:19-26 then share your favorite and why.
– anger does not produce righteousness of God: be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.
-THEREFORE: put away wickedness & receive the word which can save your souls
-We deceive ourselves when we only hear the word and do not act
-the one who hears the perfect law-law of liberty and acts will be blessed
-our hearts are deceived if we think we are religious and do not be careful of what we say
-it pleases God to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and keep unstained from the world
Oh anger…it takes away so much freedom and peace from our souls. We get offended so easily-at least I can. Instead of giving into the hurt and pain others put on us, James says we should receive the word and save our souls.Romans 8:31 speaks of God’s everlasting love for us when it says, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” I do love this chapter of Romans. I need to read it through to the end and memorize it. Verse 37, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” We are LOVED, by the one who matters. Others will hurt us but we should hold our anger and receive God’s love. The anger of others to us, I have often found, is more a reflection of their situation and self, than it is of us. Often when I am angry, there is something in myself that needs to change, more than something in the person offending me. This is a good reminder for me to preach scripture to myself when I am feeling angry. I should not let myself be deceived but remember I am loved.
Dear Chris, I love your paragraph on Oh, anger…two good. And this: Others will hurt us but we should hold our anger and receive God’s love.
All good points, Chris!
Wednesday: James 2:1-13
You have probably heard the story of the Rescue station on a Great Lake that had such great community that they stopped rescuing boats in trouble and just enjoyed one another. So many churches have stopped rescuing and turned into “Country Clubs.” James understands this danger. Our churches should be filled with ragamuffins and rescuers, so different than the world’s elite.
6. Make observations on James 2:1-13 and then share your favorite and why.
-Paying attention to those who benefit us and not others-sin of partiality
-God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith
-the rich oppress us
-love your neighbor as yourself includes the marginalized of society
-just because we have not murdered does not mean our “smaller” sins are less
-mercy triumphs over judgement
I have noticed that the Spirit is working mightily in our church in this regard. We have an autistic man who attends with his parents and sometimes sits with his friends. His friends clearly suffer some mental health things as well. It’s a couple and they stand out because they don’t dress like the majority and they are always up and down during the service to get coffee. They don’t get social cues. Our church has welcomed them and I think we would all miss them if they were gone, but to be honest, I haven’t gone out of my way to meet them and know their names. It is difficult to do and would take intentionality in our crowded, rented space, but I am feeling convicted to do this. We also have an older gentleman who attends and has come alone for months but now brings his wife, praise God. They also do not dress like most, but clearly enjoy the service. I love to see the diversity in our church. We do not have much ethnic diversity, but at least classes are diverse. Interesting how our humanness tends to stay where we are comfortable and not branch out.
Interesting about the couple that doesn’t get social cues. Reading Theo from Golden helped my heart with those who are a bit off like Ellen in the book. How wonderfully dealt with her. We have a man like that in our little church – he sleeps except for getting food and going to the bathroom. But, he’s here!
Oh, Dee. He sleeps? I’m glad you have your little church. What a bright spot in your community.
6. Make observations on James 2:1-13 and then share your favorite and why.
Oh, this entire section is So Important!
As believers, we are to live a life of authenticity. Am I inclined to become friends with someone because of their wealth or status? Do I want to be friends with someone, who will somehow benefit me? Do I want to be friends with someone, who only wants my friendship for some benefit to them? These principles are so important in every aspect of our lives.
My motives should be pure, not choosing a friend to elevate myself, but to show the love of Jesus to all. We are to follow the example of Jesus, and use good judgment in selecting friends.
Favoritism in any situation is not a good thing for a relationship, and certainly not a friendship.
I experienced this with one of my husband’s family members, when my children were young. She favored our oldest daughter, and it was obvious to my two younger children. It was hurtful to them and to us. In later years, she mellowed and it made a great and positive difference. She never had children, so I am not sure she realized that it was causing problems.
My husband experienced this often, in his teaching and when he was a principal. Some parents wanted to be “friends” with him/us to have their child get a certain role in a play…etc. I love this passage, because it clearly shows how wrong it is to use a person, under the guise of a friendship. Those friends vanish quickly, once they get what they want.
I love the Tim Keller sermon when he talks about Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones (I think). He was so well known, yet he said he could relate more to the poor woman in a destitute village, than the wealthy patrons of the church. ( I probably should check the details of this before I post it, but I’ll be back with the details)☺️. Her heart and love of Jesus was pure and authentic. Lord, help me to be like that woman.
Love this from Patti:
My motives should be pure, not choosing a friend to elevate myself, but to show the love of Jesus to all. We are to follow the example of Jesus, and use good judgment in selecting friends.
Yes, so important. Patti you bring back a memory of a friend I had in school. Unfortunately, I was never 1/2 the friend to her that she was to me. I’m sad that there was that time in our lives, but she was always faithful to me. She has never missed sending me a birthday card in all these years. I’m terrible about sending cards. Even with the internet I don’t do great. I had a wonderful visit with her in my kitchen last summer, after not having seen each other for years, as she lives in Nevada. A good friend -Proverbs 18:24 A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
I’m so happy that you got together in person to catch up with your dear friend. You have blessed each other’s lives. I so often feel that I have been remiss at keeping in close touch. Life gets crazy and we live in the age of non-stop busy-ness. You are such a blessing on this blog.
Thank you, Patti. I feel the same way about you.
Monday: Cartoon Overview and James 1:1-18
3. Watch the cartoon overview of James from the Bible Recap. Scroll down on the Devotional and find it. What stands out to you and why?
—I love the concise way the cartoon gives an overview of the book. It stood out to me that James boiled it down to two influences on what he wrote. One being Jesus’s sermon on the mount and the other the book of Proverbs. That resulted in “short wisdom speeches full of metaphors and one liners”.
4. Read James 1:1-18 and make observations. Then choose the one that stands out the most and share why.
—James writes to Jewish believers scattered abroad away from Jerusalem.
—Experience joy when trials come. Consider them to he an opportunity to test our faith and grow into being steadfast which brings about maturity.
—Ask God for wisdom and He will give it generously but do it with unwavering faith. God will not respond to a doubtful person.
—If you are poor trust in God to provide and if you are wealthy be humble before God because wealth is fleeting and does mot last. Life is short and you can’t take it with you.
—“God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” What a wonderful promise.
—Every good gift we have comes from God our Father. He never changes.
“He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.” 1:18 NLT
—It is hard to choose one but the promise that God will give wisdom to anyone who asks it from him with a believing heart and not doubting him is a security to take hold of. And He gives it generously to the one who firmly believes in Him and doesn’t waver.
So hard not to waiver!!!
Amen to Dee! It is hard not to waiver!
I love this: He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.” 1:18 NLT
– We should not be double minded or show favoritism. We should not slight or eliminate anyone that God has chosen. He doesn’t look at what we have, but how we love and act. Vs 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. God has given us clear instruction on how to live. He doesn’t pick and choose rules/instructions/laws. To him they are all one in the same. They don’t have degrees of harshness, if that makes sense. To him, when we sin, we have sinned against him. What I can see from this is if we have the most important part, love, we will not have any of these other issues of discriminating or showing favoritism. I need to work on my love for others and make sure that it is pure.
I like what you have said, Julie. God has given us clear instruction on how to live and the most important is love.
Wednesday: James 2:1-13
6. Make observations on James 2:1-13 and then share your favorite and why.
James is saying that the true faith of Jesus shows no partiality
Do not treat a well-dressed/wealthy person better than a person who is not
If you show partiality, you judge by outward appearance, and that judgement is sinful
The rich/poweful person oppress others, and they blaspheme the name of Jesus, so why treat them well?
God has chosen the poor, who are rich in faith, to be heirs of the promise
I am reminded of when Samuel went to select a son of Jesse to be the next king, and he thought it would be one of the older/stronger brothers. God told him, “..man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” It’s a natural tendancy to notice outward appearance first, but we can’t let that determine our behavior to others.
As I read today verse 4 stood out to me, “Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?”
To discriminate in such a manner is to be swayed by evil/sinful thoughts, whereby you pass judgement. It’s not only the action of showing partiality that’s wrong, but the very thought of doing so is wrong. I confess that I may not show partiality (not just appearance either, but talent, favorite speaker/author, etc.), in my thought I might be comparing people, and that’s wrong.
Cheryl — can you elaborate a bit on your last comment. I definitely have favorite authors or preachers who help me grow and those I avoid because they don’t. I want to understand your comment.
I am not talking about reading or listening to messages. I was referring to being physically present with the speaker, author, singer, etc. and treating them with partiality, favoring him/her in my thoughts/attitude/words/actions, and comparing others unfavorably to them. Does that make sense?
Absolutely makes sense. So very true.
I love your openness in all of your answers, Cheryl. I have been thinking of your responses on anger, earlier and here, on partiality. Thank you for sharing your honest and thoughtful responses. It is so important to keep a constant awareness of my heart’s desires and my thoughts. A small seed can grow, whether it be a weed or a flower. I need to keeping weeding the garden of my heart and mind.
I like your analogy, Patti. Thoughts indeed are like seeds, and I do need to weed out the bad/unproductive ones, so that my garden/mind is all lovely flowers.
I like that flower/weed metaphor too.
5. Make observations on James 1:19-26 then share your favorite and why.
We are to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.
We are not reflecting God when we get angry.
Get rid of evil inside of us. Be humble and accept God’s Word. It will save our souls.
We must listen AND do what the Word says. If we don’t obey, then we forget the value.
Remembering to obey means we will be blessed by God.
If we claim to be religious but don’t control our tongue, then we are hypocrites.
I think all of these verses stand out to me! I have a new boss who has been pretty nasty this year. I have caught myself thinking bad thoughts about her, speaking to others about her, and not feeling good inside about our workplace. I should not be doing or feeling this way. I am to reflect God’s way. Thank you James (Jacob) for reminding me!
Your application is so good, Laura — one I need too. Have learned to curb my tongue but harder to take thoughts captive.
Interesting comment Dee. In some ways, I agree. But what I am learning in the Freedom in Christ study, is that changing our thoughts is what leads to changing our actions. This week our “assignment” is to read statements based on scripture which will help change our thoughts. One example is “Why should I worry and fret when I can cast all my anxiety on Christ who cares for me?” 1 Peter 5:7
We could ask ourselves, why should this poor man sit in a less prominent seat when he has been created in God’s image, just as I have? The bottom line in the sin of partiality is seeing others as more important than ourselves. It can be tricky to navigate if our thoughts are not right, as Laura pointed out. I always love your real-life examples, Laura.
That’s so good, Chris!
Love this, Chris: The bottom line in the sin of partiality is seeing others as more important than ourselves. Similar to what Tim Keller said.
Amen to you and Dee, Laura. I need to curb my tongue. 🙏🙏 It can be the most destructive weapon.
I find that because of my speech problem, it’s easy to curb my tongue. It’s my thoughts that often go amuck.
Ahh. Well, I guess that’s one way to look at the bright side of things Cheryl! Praying for you as you navigate your health. ❤️
6. Make observations on James 2:1-13 and then share your favorite and why.
Don’t favor some over others.
Treat the rich just as the poor. Give a prime seat to both.
God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith because they will inherit the Kingdom.
The rich oppress and drag us into court. They slander Jesus.
We bear Jesus’ name 😉
We follow the law of loving our neighbor as ourselves. Favoring one over another is sin and is breaking the law.
Breaking one law is like breaking them all.
We are judged by the One who sets us free.
There is mercy for those who are merciful.
The last bit about being judged is interesting to me. God allows us freedom, but yes, we will be judged in the end. I need to remember that.
Laura, I love the way this is worded! Treat the rich just as the poor. Give a prime seat to both.
Thursday: James 2:14-26

What stands out to me, is that in the passage about faith without works being dead, the two examples given to us are such a stark contrast. We are given Abraham, the father of our faith and Rahab the prostitute. Abraham demonstrates his faith by his works and offering up his son and Rahab, demonstrates her faith by her works in saving the spies at risk to her own life. Abraham is one who has spent his whole life living for the Lord from the time he was called. Rahab has lived among pagans, but only heard of our God and decided that this is who she wants to serve. The Lord demonstrates to us, in the people he chooses to use for his redemptive plan, what he expects of us. We should also look at the heart of a person and not the outward appearance when considering those whom the Lord may want us to bless. I think a person‘s outward appearance can definitely give us a lot of clues about their heart, but we need to leave room for what the Lord has in mind and always be prayerful. There is a woman who I invited to my home today that I know needs comfort and love of friends. I’m hoping that the Lord will show me how to bless her.
A beautiful post, Chris. I will pray for the Lord to lead you in this time with your guest today. I always think of that verse in Hebrews 13:2 “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.”
Thank you, Patti. We enjoyed our visit and I hope she was blessed. I’m hoping I steered her in the right direction on a couple of topics. We have in common two boys who have lost their moms. The boys swam in the pool while we chatted. It was a nice time. She shared a video of her son and daughter who have passed away and I shared a poem my son just wrote to remember our granddaughter’s 3rd anniversary in heaven this week. Such bitter sweet things to have in common.
Thanking God that you enjoyed your visit together, Chris. I think sharing with one who understands, can soften the pain for both of you. I know being with you blessed her immensely. Many people will skirt around the subject of grief, yet sharing lifts the burden of pain.
Those are bittersweet things to have in common – but also such a comfort to be able to share with someone who truly understands your grief.
Jame 2: 14-26
7. Make observations and then share your favorite and why.
This section can always seem a bit confusing, like it is either faith or works.
I think that works is just a natural overflow and outward expression of our faith.
It can be unconscious, as it seemed to be with Rahab. She did not live a life of good morals, yet she demonstrated faith, love and sacrifice by helping the spies. This always demonstrates to me why I should not be judgmental of people, yet I need to use wise judgment in my own moral life and in selecting friends.
There are so many fine lines in scripture, that show is that we need to take the log out of our own eye, before judging another.
One of my favorites is: James 2:22 “You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, he faith was perfected.” Not many could have the faith that it took Abraham to trust that God would offer the sacrifice at the very last moment. I have asked myself many times, do I have that kind of faith. I pray that God will not test me.
Oh, Patti. I see you passing a great test by trusting the Lord with your grief. You are a shining example of one who trusts the Lord. We are not all tested in the same way.
It is so true, Chris. We are not all tested on the same way. God knows each of us so well.
I agree with your comment on Patti – she has passed the hardest test so well.
Thursday: James 2:14-26
7. Make observations and then share your favorite and why.
To summarize (in my words): True faith will be demonstrated by good works. We have not been redeemed to just sit on our hands, but to fulfill the purpose of God in our lives, Eph. 2:10 and Titus 2:14 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
We don’t work for our salvation, but because of our salvation – we work. Our obedience flows from the indwelling Spirit and is a visible witness to the world of our faith.
Hello, all!
I am sorry to have been quiet from my end the past week or so. I attended a women’s convention and spent several days at our daughter Ruth’s place. Her dog, Sam, and her cat, Ellie, have been sick, and she needed a reprieve. Lots of cleaning (I will spare you the details) has been done. Ruth was very appreciative, and I got to spend some good time with her as well.
I am trying to catch up here at home while enjoying the weeding our garden needs! I hope to catch up on reading the comments here as well. James is a favorite book of mine. Good works always follow true conversion. I like Tim Keller’s comparative table of religion vs. the gospel. My “religion” is only true as shown by my works. ” I am accepted, therefore I obey.”
How have you seen God in your life recently in joy or in trials?
The past week of being at the convention and helping Ruth was a roller coaster of highs and lows. And yet, the very presence and peace of God have been palpable. I didn’t need to understand what He was doing, but I could count it all joy. I was physically and mentally tired but spiritually filled. No need to perform; just BE.
Bing, I can just see you cleaning the messes with joy and coming home to the weeds and loving the chance to get back in the garden like meeting with an old friend. I love that the Lord filled you. Thank you for this picture of joy in you.
I love how you felt God presence and peace, dear Bing. I know many were blessed by you at the convention.
Friday: Tara-Leigh Cobble
7. What stands out to you from Tara and why? Interesting about the mistake with the name, James-How confusing. Scripture interprets scripture is helpful and I need to remember this.
Chapter one: trials and steadfastness for believers is great to acknowledge for everyone as they struggle in their walk-Finding wisdom, taming the tongue, changing our hearts, living out what we believe. Our actions reveal what’s in our hearts. God adopted us in the midst of our sin. 2:24, justification by our works, demonstrates what is in our hearts-for people- Other believers need to see our faith to know it is genuine.
Whew-hard to take notes, she talks so fast. What stands out to me is that the Christian life is challenging and can be full of unexpected events/people-We need to be watchful that we are not deceived. Those who used to be enemies of the faith, may turn. We can know their faith by their actions. We should accept those God calls and seek God for wisdom in this. I need to continually evaluate my heart to see if my faith is evident in my actions and keep myself from being deceived by staying in the word. Overall, as His chosen ones, we must be doers of the Word and show mercy to others.
This is so good, Chris.
“I need to continually evaluate my heart to see if my faith is evident in my actions and keep myself from being deceived by staying in the word. Overall, as His chosen ones, we must be doers of the Word and show mercy to others.”
7. Make observations and then share your favorite and why.
We should show faith through our actions. Otherwise, can we be saved?
What do you do when you see a brother who is hungry or needs clothing?
Faith is only good when it’s paired with actions. He argues… how faith can be shown without good deeds?
There is only one God. Even the demons know this and tremble.
He asks again about faith and good deeds. They seem to not be “mutually exclusive.”
Abraham offered Isaac to God and was shown to be right. It was his faith that was shown through his actions that made him that way. He quotes the Bible:
“And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.”
James 2:23 NLT
We are right with God because of what we do, not by faith alone.
He gives the example of Rahab hiding the spies as well.
He believes our faith alone is dead if there is no action that comes from our faith.
I guess I’m confused (as usual, with the Bible for me). I thought we aren’t saved by doing good works. We are saved by faith. I do see that good work would come out of being faithful to God though. A simple example would be if I “love my neighbor then I will treat them well.” Is this what he is trying to say?
It helped me to listen to Tara-Leigh on this one, Laura. I listened three times, because she speaks fast, but it made it more clear.☺️🙏
Does this from Martin Luther help? We are saved by faith alone, but faith that saves is never alone. (Real faith produces good works)
Oh, I like that quote!
👍
We’ll listen to Tara this week, She confused me a bit when she said James didn’t write this but “Jacabo” but what she meant was that “Jacabo” is the correct Hebrew name and the English translation is Jacob, and James is a mistake. But this is the half brother of Jesus. It is interesting to me that James, and some if not all of his siblings didn’t believe until the resurrection.
7. What stands out to you from Tara and why?
All of it! It is so true and necessary!
There was so much in Tara’s takeaway !
True wisdom is from the power of God
It is early to lie to ourselves about our motives.
Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
God sees the heart.
Our actions reveal who we are in our heart.
Heart change shows up in the way we talk and in our behavior/actions. We begin to live out what we believe.
To justify is to demonstrate what is happening in your heart. Your heart has its priorities; they can’t hide…they spill out in your actions.
We are held accountable for what we know.
If our hearts trust in Jesus, we start to live out what we believe and we will walk in obedience to His teaching. It is a painfully slow process.
God adopted us on our sin, He will not let anyone snatch you out of His hand.
Wisdom does not exist apart from knowing God. It is a wholeness.
It is demonstrated by being: Pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy, full of good fruit, impartial and sincere.
‘Dear Jesus, please engrave these words in my heart and mind and help me to live them out. In the Mighty Name of Jesus, I pray.
That list also stood out to me, Patti. It reminds me of the fruits of the spirit. We cannot demonstrate qualities with our own determination but only through the Spirit. I think that was Tara’s point, these things will set us apart from the world.
I stopped listening when she started chapter 3-we do that next, right?
love your notes/comments.-“a painfully slow process”, so true!
Chris — right!
So sorry…I need to stay focused.
Friday – TLC
7. What stands out to you from Tara and why?
We can bring peace into chaos “by being content, humble, and by prioritizing the things of God in our lives.” This stood out to me because of the constant arguing and hateful speech I see in the news/comments/posts. I don’t read/watch news on a regular basis, but I find myself asking constantly, “Why are they calling others derogatory names…why the nastiness…why so much anger,” from people who claim to be Christian? I find Tara’s comments very helpful. I might not be able to affect the larger world, but I can certainly be a peaceful influence right where I live.
I love that you brought this out. I didn’t hear it-maybe I need to listen to the whole thing?
What a great point, Julie. I try to limit how much news I watch too.
Thursday: James 2:14-26
7. Make observations and then share your favorite and why. – From all of these verses I see that God wants us to do our part. He wants us to have faith in him and believe and know that he is faithful, but he also wants us to do our part in spreading the Good News. He wants to see us using our godly gifts and I think most of all he wants to see us loving like he loves.
Blogger Quotes from our past study with Paige on James 2:
Lydia: Our community needs Jesus, not a “Christian Club”. – Amen to this!
Susan: Paige emphasizes that receiving is not the same thing as hearing, or understanding, or agreeing. What matters is the lab! What matters is responding!
7. What stands out to you from Tara and why? – The name change issue is confusing to me. I need to look into that some more. I thought this was good…Heart change shows up in how we talk; and this…A person’s works prove or demonstrates what is happening in a person’s heart. It seems to be all about the inner heart. We can do and say things that seem to us to be what we think God wants us to say and do, but it should just come automatically and be a constant in our lives. That is when we know God’s Word has seeped down into our heart.
I don’t think the name change is a big deal. Early on Jacobo was apparently mistranslated James in English. But I never heard anyone bring it up before.
I agree, Dee. I think it’s okay to acknowledge this but seems unimportant and adding confusion, unless newer translations are going to correct the error.
Amen to all of you.
Saturday: God Shot?
8. What is your God shot and why? The Lord always knows what we need. It’s no coincidence for me that this lesson comes on the third anniversary of our granddaughter’s passing. This was truly a storm that tested my anchor and I can say my Anchor held. When I look back to 3 years ago and that time, all the events involved, the Lord truly carried us through. There are some events I cannot ever forget. My son’s voice when he woke me from sleep to say something was wrong. The picture of our granddaughter’s little body taking her last breaths. My DIL’s scream when she did. The ambulance and its workers. The terrible phone call to bring my grandsons because their sister wouldn’t make it. My son playing, “All Creatures of Our God and King,” when she was taken off life support. My boys all in our barn building that sweet little coffin. The girls buying the grave clothes and lining for the casket. The multitude of believers here bringing food day after day that week leading up to the funeral and our family gathering every day-life just stopped. My son’s poem this year is the most heart-wrenching yet. But God! His salvation for us all and his support of us all in that time and going forward to eternity is what gets us through. James 1:12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. One day, we will all fly away from death into the loving arms of our Father.
Oh, Chris! So much pain and yet, I see the Holy Spirit so clearly in all that each of you did, honoring and glorifying God through this extreme pain. Your faith speaks to many. Thank you for sharing this. May God be very close to each of you at this time of remembrance. And your son glorifying God still, through his poem.
Oh my Chris — the pictures you paint bring it to our hearts. Indeed, the storms of life can be so frightening and overwhelming, how we need that anchor.
It is indeed wondrous the way the Lord is in every detail you described, Chris. It’s memories like that which will continue to comfort you and your family for all time. Praying for you, with love.
Oh Chris! Tears. I can’t even imagine what you went through. The whole family coming together though sounds so wonderful to me. Building the coffin and choosing the clothes. Love you sister ♥️
Oh Chris, I’m so sorry but your faith and your family’s faith through all is what brings hope to others. You are a true blessing to this group.
Friday and Saturday, as I try to catch up! I am so glad to come here, though late. James (or Jacabo, good short article TLC shared) is a beautiful book of salvation by grace alone.
We’ll listen to Tara this week, She confused me a bit when she said James didn’t write this but “Jacabo” but what she meant was that “Jacabo” is the correct Hebrew name and the English translation is Jacob, and James is a mistake. But this is the half brother of Jesus. It is interesting to me that James, and some, if not all of his siblings didn’t believe until the resurrection.
7. What stands out to you from Tara and why?
Many things stood out to me:
James turned from mocking His brother, Jesus, to serving Him.
The book was written for believers; the visible good works were markers of knowing Jesus.
Scripture should be interpreted through the lens of Scripture.
Perfection or wholeness can only be brought to us by God.
James 2:15 is a great example of demonstrating what we say by doing it.
2:24 The word “justified,” considered righteous, means to prove or demonstrate.
Our works demonstrate what is in our hearts; God sees the heart. But humans need to see the “proving”. I liked that James used the example of Rahab to prove his point.
Saturday: God Shot?
8. What is your God shot and why?
God is the author of all wisdom. Whatever comes to me, in times of trials and temptations, in living out my faith in terms of good works, I need to go to Him for wisdom. I love that James did not give us a list of dos and don’ts but of principles based on wisdom, which he will describe later in James 3:13-17.
Saturday: God Shot?
8. What is your God shot and why?
-Like Bing my week has been one of coming and going. And for me house guests and late nights. So didn’t listen to Tara Leigh Cobble until this morning.
My God Shot was from her comments regarding steadfastness. She pointed out steadfastness is developed in trial and is necessary for wholeness and becoming “perfect”. Perfect means wholeness or completion. It all comes to together and in this case James or now Jacob if you prefer to call him develops this concept by saying it is our works and actions that reveal if we have had a true heart change. She said A heart change shows up in the way we talk and our actions reveal what is in our hearts.
But it is a painfully slow process.
She made what was a very interesting note to me that when the church grew very quickly and exponentially loads of people were claiming to believe. So much so that at one point the early church waited 3 yrs to see evidence of the new converts being genuine as evidenced by their actions.
So the “real” believers stood the test of time by what their actions were in the face of trials. Did they demonstrate steadfastness and become mature “perfect” in their walk with Jesus. It remains the same today.
Since we all fall short and still sin in this painfully slow process. I loved the assurance she gave us in commenting on the last paragraph of chapter 2 “God is not letting anyone or any sin snatch you out of his hand.”
7. What stands out to you from Tara and why?
I think she says this wasn’t written by Jesus’ half brother. I’m going to have to listen again,
I like that she says he is writing to the people of the time. God knows our hearts, the humans do not. People were saying they were believers but not showing that they were. This is where the good works come into play. She says, “…our actions reveal what is in our hearts.” That helps me understand better.
