Crooked as a corkscrew
The fleeting praise of man is a huge stumbling block for me. How I want to be like Paul and Barnabas who boldly spoke the truth to the Bar-Jesus whom The Message says “was crooked as a corkscrew.” They didn’t fear having a curse from the devil put on them! They knew God was more powerful.

Women of high standing
And when respected women of high standing turned against them and drove them from the city, the Message says “they shrugged their shoulders and went on to the next town, Iconium, brimming with joy and the Holy Spirit, two happy disciples.” (Acts 13:51-52)
Oh Lord, help me to find that same joy in pleasing you, no matter what people think! I want to live to please You alone, but You know how I struggle. Change my heart, O God.
Sunday:
- How did you experience the power, joy, or peace of the Lord this week?
Monday: Acts 13:1-12
I was struck how the Lord spoke to the four men worshipping and fasting. My daughter Sally had this experience in high school when she and her friends fasted lunches and prayed — and it ended up bringing the Jesus Film to a secular high school.
2. Make observations and then write about the one that impacted you the most and why.
3. Have you ever had the experience that the four men had in hearing from the Lord after worshiping and fasting together? (verses 1-3) If so, share.
4. Make observations about Paul’s sermon in verses 13-39. What stood out to you the most and why?
Tuesday: Acts 13:40-52
5. How does Paul end his sermon in verses 40-41?
6. I wonder if preaching is different in third world countries, for I doubt many American preachers could do this. We tried a Paul Washer sermon at our church and while some liked it, others really were upset at how harsh he was. I wonder how Jonathan Edwards would fare today. Thoughts?
7. Make observations about the various responses of the people in 42-52.
8. What strikes you the most and why?
9. What is your God shot for all of Acts 13?
Wednesday: Acts 14:1-18
10. Make observations for Acts 14:1-7
11. I am most interested in this: “They spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.” I want more details. How do you think they spoke?
12. Make observations for Acts 14:8-18 What stands out the most and why?
Thursday: Acts 14:19-28
13. Make observations for verses 19:23. What stands out and why?
14. Make observations for verses 24-28.
15. What is your God shot for Acts 14.

This group is a bright spot in my life.
I’ve been pressing into God more this week, abiding more, praying more because I feel like I’m living in the movie “The Money Trap” and am dealing with financial anxiety. It helps me so much to be in the Word to calm me down that He sees, He cares, He provides.
Dear Dee! I can relate. I am praying that we both can relax in Jesus. I am doing the same. Amen. His Word calms me.
Our sermon today was on “The Names of God”. El Roi: “The God Who Sees”and Jehovah Jireh: “The God Who Provides” were just two of the names.
As I am typing, this just popped up at the top of my screen:
”My Grace is sufficient for you” 2 Corinthians 12:9. Thank you Jesus! Wow
Dee, thank you for sharing…praying that you will experience His peace, which exceeds anything we can understand (Phil.4:8).
Dee, you are always a bright spot in my life! Praying for you and your anxious thoughts. I know that God sees, cares, and is providing for you. Our pastor’s sermon was on Acts 2:41-47 today. How the Lord saw to it that the early believers were provided for. He will do the same for you. Ephesians 3:20-21
Thank you Patti, Sharon, and Bing. I do know these are First World problems.
Dee, I love that you are always real and share from your heart. I am praying for you, and I think we all can relate to these anxieties. Thank you for your love and leadership for all of us. You are so brave and I still am in awe of your calm during that winter storm. You are loved!
“It helps me so much to be in the Word to calm me down that He sees, He cares, He provides.”
I certainly identify with this. Amid my very busy week I have I regretted not keeping up here but I knew I had to make my personal time in the Word priority to let the Word calm me down and remember He sees, He cares,He provides.
Dee, I don’t know what your situation is, but I do know God will provide. He is right there with you in the midst of the anxiety. Love to you. ♥️♥️🙏🙏
1. How did you experience the power, joy, or peace of the Lord this week?
I am so dependent on the Lord. Since I have been alone, I have had moments of fear and being overwhelmed. Last week it was a flat tire. This week it was another car issue…”engine light on: don’t drive car” message. These crazy things that panic me a bit. They seem to happen when my kids are out of town or super busy. Every time, I ask “Lord, are you teaching me something ?” I don’t know many people here, and though my neighbors are lovely, I don’t feel comfortable calling them over every little thing.
I prayed about the car issue ( I pray about Everything! I could not get through a day without the Lord!), and ended up calling the dealership. My car is 20 years old, but I bought it new, so it was registered nationally at the dealerships. ( I did not even know they did that). Praise God! AAA was so kind and prompt about getting it towed. The dealership was wonderful and the service person gave me her direct number. She and the man, who worked with the mechanics, called when they got the car, when they finished the car, and gave me a detailed update. It was something simple, but they checked everything to give me peace of mind. My son in law was able to drop me off at the dealership early the next morning and my bill was reasonable. I thought it was something huge, but it was not and everyone I worked with was so great. Thank you Lord! Only God! This may sound like a small thing, but to me it was huge! I was so grateful. I am learning to TRUST HIM more, with everything.
Patti, I love your stories of how our Mighty God takes care of you…only God! Yes, indeed!
Oh, Patti! Our dear Father has taken care of you once again! He had it in mind already to have your car registered nationally at the dealership! Nothing is too small for our Father to take care of. But we know it is always about the Giver and not necessarily the gift. How He loves us!
I would be in a complete panic to see Engine Light On Don’t Drive Car, but you handled it beautifully with prayer, trust, and a great answer.
Patti I am so happy the car situation all worked out for you! Praise the Lord!
Amen! Praise the Lord! Only God could keep my fluttering heart calm.
Oh sweet Patti, God bless you in these days of widowhood. They are never easy but it is sweet to hear how God has helped you. Car issues are no small thing. If it weren’t for Terry I would be in a panic over car things. It is so his thing and not mine. It is just good to hear how God undertook for you.
Sunday:
How did you experience the power, joy, or peace of the Lord this week?
This week has been an experience of many dialogues with God. And it seemed like the more I engaged with Him, the more circumstances kept cropping up to distract and confound me. I know who is playing mind games with me, but the One who has been renewing my mind is waging a victorious fight. Not that it has been easy, but the surety of God’s love and strong grip on me keeps me steady on my feet like the hind feet of the deer! I see His POWER in me!
“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.” Habakkuk 3: 17-19
At one of my low points, and during some tempting negative rumination over how my parents would have thought of me at this point, I came upon this verse in Proverbs 23:24 (NLT): “The father of godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure to have children who are wise.”
Would my parents be joyful/proud to see where I am today? Have I been wise? Dee, I do understand what you said about man’s approval. It is a very demanding and at times formidable idol or foe to contend with.
BUT…I was also reminded of this verse in Zephaniah 3:17 ESV
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”
I have One who rejoices over me with no strings attached nor required performance. He gives me His JOY and PEACE.
Dee, your prayer is my prayer, too: “Oh Lord, help me to find that same joy in pleasing you, no matter what people think! I want to live to please You alone, but You know how I struggle. Change my heart, O God.”
Sounds like we are all calling out all the time, trusting, dependent!
Oh, Bing, you are a blessing and I know your parents would be proud of the godly woman you are. I need to pray away those idols and put the Lord first constantly. Help me Lord.
Bing, What a blessing you are! You beautifully articulate with wonderful scripture references how God’s POWER, JOY & PEACE have been in your life. 💕
Sunday:
This is my bright spot, too!
Reading through everyone’s posts tonight and realizing we are each tempted to give in to our anxious thoughts and we are bombarded each day. It is such an encouragement to come here and find I am not alone and to read each one’s way of fighting.
Saturday, I took my son to a 4H dog fun match. He is showing our little Papillon at the fair in July. Today was like a practice but with actual judges for obedience, rally, showmanship and agility. He did amazing but was suddenly overcome with fear before going in the ring for obedience. He was refusing to go in. The judge tried to coax him in with kind words and I tried as well. Then when it looked like he might give up, I was prompted to whisper in his ear, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I said a few more encouraging words and the judge was starting to call the next person, when he suddenly got the courage to go ahead. I don’t know whether it was my silent prayers and the verse, but I like to give God the credit for working in his heart to find courage.
Oh, Chris! A kiss from the King! I can be kind of like Papillon-I need a lot of prayers for courage!
Hahaha. It was my son who had the fear. Whenever he feels out of control, he shuts down and refuses to participate. The dog, a Papillon breed, had lots of fun the whole day! Sorry, that was confusing. 🙃
Now that’s a story!
Oh I thought you were whispering in the dog’s ear too. A little worried about you. : )
Hahaha! If I start whispering in dogs ears, then we know I’m losing it!
Oh, Chris! What a wonderful answer to prayer. I was a bit confused too, thank you for clarifying. I am so happy for your son, being courageous!
Delightful to hear how God undertook to answer your prayer. Regardless of whose ear your were whispering in 😁 God’s Word has power.
1. How did you experience the power, joy, or peace of the Lord this week?
I think the answer to my prayer (I explained it in a lengthy post last week) was pretty amazing. It was a spark of life in a very sad work environment this year. Thank You Lord.
I am still touched by the way the Lord worked in answer to your prayer. Praise God for his work in our lives.
That was a huge answer to prayer that will continue to impact others. You are planting seeds and blessing many, Laura.
Laura, I have been much in prayer for you this past week after reading your post. It was a blessing to see how God encouraged your heart and I trust he will continue to do that in many more ways. You are very loved and appreciated here. 💕
So, He did it again! And another chance to witness to a friend who isn’t necessarily a believer. I was thinking to myself on my way to work, how the women who are leaving our church are the ones that are my age. I was fretting how I don’t have many friends and wondering what I have done that might make people not want to be friends with me. I was thinking how maybe it’s because I like to exercise and they don’t care about that. I can get hyper focused on things, maybe they don’t like that? I got to my room and sat down at my desk and wouldn’t you know that my colleague had written me a very sweet note about how she valued our FRIENDSHIP and what an awesome friend I have been to her! Wow…she made me cry! Then I told her my story about what I was thinking about this morning. We just stared at each other for about a minute. He gave us a kiss! Thank You Lord Jesus!
P.S. she likes to exercise too 😉
Laura, I have sweet tears of joy for you. What a kind thing for both your friend and the Lord to do. And what a great witness to us, who may also be needing that from the Lord and a friend.
Once again my health is effecting my life in a way that I can’t ignore. I keep wanting to push it aside and forget about it, but I came across what looks like something I should investigate and so I am seeking a referral from my doctor to a specialist in women’s health at a clinic in a neighboring state. I need courage for this and so now I am whispering in my own ear and hoping for the Lord to answer.
He did it again. 🙂
Oh, Laura! I am crying reading this beautiful answer to prayer! He did it again! I am so happy you are being you! Keep exercising!❤️
Chris! Listen to your inner voice about your medical needs. Please don’t delay! I’m not a big fan of doctors (I like the dentist better because they don’t make you get on a scale!), but delaying might enhance the problem and then it’s too hard to recover. Praying for your health now. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Bev! I am surviving although the road is bumpy.
Thank you for your prayers. ❤️
Among believers with Saul, are those of high political standing. I read that Manaen was a prophet and teacher in the early church and either a close companion or foster-brother of Herod-the Herod who beheaded John the Baptist.
The men worship and fast and receive from the Holy Spirit, instructions to go to work which they have been called.
The men proclaim the word of God on the island of Salamis, in the synagogues of the Jews. They come to a false prophet named Bar-Jesus, who is with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus.
I find it interesting that there is much archeological evidence that there was a Roman official by this name. The fact that there has been stone with this name inscribed found today is amazing to me.
The magician tries to turn the proconsul away from the faith and Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit calls him out and makes him blind, showing the power of God. This act and teaching of the Lord by Saul, brings the proconsul to faith.
3. Have you ever had the experience that the four men had in hearing from the Lord after worshiping and fasting together? (verses 1-3) If so, share. I don’t believe I have. There have been times where I felt sure of something I should do, but not in this dramatic way.
Saul and Barnabas were at the church in Antioch with prophets and teachers.
They were fasting and praying, when the Holy Spirit commissioned Saul and Barnabas for their first Missionary journey.
The sailed to Cyprus, where they spoke the words of God in the synagogues. John was with them.
They met a magician, Bar-Jesus (Elymus), who was a false prophet.
When the Proconsul, Sergius, called Saul and Barnabas to hear their message, Elymus opposed them and tried to turn Sergius against them.
Then Saul (now being called Paul), who was filled with the Holy Spirit, called Elymus on his deceitful ways.
Paul said that God’s hand was against him and Elymus would become blind for awhile. Elymus was instantly blinded.
The proconsul, witnessing all of this, saw the power of God and believed.
Saul, now Paul, knew both sides of this~ being an unbelieving hateful person, and now transformed in the power of God. God can change the hardest hearts, so never give up.
‘Paul was committed to Christ and he had prayed and fasted, with a sincere and repentant heart.
After Paul fasted and prayer with the other believers, God blessed Paul and anointed him with the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit, working through Paul, set back the evil Elymus, and brought the message of God to the Proconsul and he became a believer.
An amazing beginning for the Ministry of Paul and Barnabas. What a difference in the history of Christianity this one conversion of Saul to Paul made! There is Power in God’s Word, in praying and fasting.
3. Have you ever had the experience that the four men had in hearing from the Lord after worshiping and fasting together? (verses 1-3) If so, share.
I have not. I have had miraculous answers.
4. Make observations about Paul’s sermon in verses 13-39. What stood out to you the most and why?
Paul reviews the history of the Jews and God’s faithfulness to His people, from their time in Egypt, the wilderness years, destroying nations in land of Canaan, dividing the land, through the Judges, Samuel the Prophet, to Saul and the chosen King David~all according to God’s promise to deliver through this lineage, Jesus our Lord and Savior, who was also proclaimed before His coming by John the Baptizer. He made it clear that he was not the Savior, but the messenger.
‘This stands out to me: John (the Baptist) kept saying: “ …one is coming after me, the sandals of whose feet, I am not worthy to untie.”
It stands out to me how concise Paul was in relating this so clearly, so the Jewish people could see that it was God’s Son, who had been waited for so long, that was rejected and crucified and resurrected.” It gives me chills to think what a radical change, Paul had in his heart. It was after Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, that peoples hearts were changed, yet He lived as a man of sorrow and was treated as a criminal. We humans are blind and cruel. We need to stay in God’s Word, to stay strong in our faith, especially at this time in history.
We do need to stay in God’s word. So simple to say this, but the enemy works to keep us away-we must keep praying.
Sunday:
How did you experience the power, joy, or peace of the Lord this week?
—A week ago on Sunday Terry and I hosted a family reunion over Memorial day for extended family. Then our daughter in-law and two granddaughters spent the entire week staying with us. My son and the grandsons came on Friday night. On Saturday night we had a large graduation reception for our grandson at our home church where our son preached and pastored for 11 years and our grandson basically grew up here. Over this past week end we then had an extra 7 people staying overnight in the house. So meal prep, graduation prep and clean up has been dominating my time. All that to say I have had a lot of interactions with people I love and love to be with. The blessings of believing family and friends touched my life and that served to bring a great deal of joy into my life this past week. A special highlight was a time of prayer for our grandson Asher. We gathered in our living room with his parents and siblings and some of his friends Saturday night to pray over him. He flew out yesterday afternoon for Indonesia where he will be going with a team of college kids on mission to an area of remote and primitive islands where they will imbed themselves in that culture which is Muslim. They will be looking for opportunities to share Christ.
Bev, It sounds like a lovely week with your sweet family. How sweet to have prayer time over Asher, as he goes to Indonesia on his Mission trip. It should be a great experience going to remote and primitive islands. Prayers for safety and good health for Asher and his group.
Bev, praising God with you for this joyous time with family and I echo Patti’s prayers for your grandson, Asher. I also have a grandson, Asher, but he is only one year old. I love praying for the Lord to give my children/grandchildren work to do in His Kingdom.
What a week filled with joy for your family! Just being together is joyous for you! That’s exciting, that Asher gets to go on such a far away trip. I have a friend who did that in the Comoros islands for 15 years. Praying for safety and peace, spreading the Good Word of our faithful God. 🙏🙏
Monday: Acts 13:1-12
2. Make observations and then write about the one that impacted you the most and why.
—I found the reoccurring mention of the Holy Spirit to be significant to the work of spreading the Gospel. Barnabas and Saul were called by the Holy Spirit V. 2 and they were sent out by the Holy Spirit V. 4 Saul was filled with the Holy Spirit V.9.
Sharon gave us this wonderful nugget of truth last week from JI Packer. I thought it spoke to the value and importance of the Holy Spirit’s work.
“It is not for us to imagine that we can prove the truth of Christianity by our own arguments; nobody can prove the truth of Christianity except that the Holy Sprit, by His own almighty work of renewing the blinded heart. It is the sovereign prerogative of Christ’s Spirit to convince men’s consciences of the truth of Christ’s gospel, and Christ’s human witnesses must learn to ground their hopes of success not on clever presentation of the truth by man, but on powerful demonstration of the truth by the Spirit. (See 1 Corinthians 2:1-5) Without the Holy Spirit there would not be a Christian in the world.” JI Packer “Knowing God”
3. Have you ever had the experience that the four men had in hearing from the Lord after worshiping and fasting together? (verses 1-3) If so, share.
—No I haven’t personally practiced fasting with praying in a group context. But I have been part of many prayer meetings seeking God’s leading and found Him faithful to give direction and impetus for works of ministry.
Most significantly being part of a couple of church plants.
4. Make observations about Paul’s sermon in verses 13-39. What stood out to you the most and why?
—He gives a summary of Jewish history starting with Israel being in Egypt clear down to Jesus “Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.” He also verified Jesus as the Messiah by the affirmation of John the Baptist. But the ultimate verification was the resurrection which led to the Gospel or good news that Paul and Barnabas were telling them. From verses 32 &33 “And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers,” “this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus,”
It stands out to me again from Paul’s sermon that without the resurrection Christianity is meaningless. We serve a risen Savior!
Bev, I am encouraged once again by your posts. I do love the way JI Packer reminds us that the Word points to the Holy Spirit as the only hope of turning hearts to Him. I do also like to remember that it is by our witness of our story and the clear teaching of the truth of scripture that His spirit works. It would be tempting to say that it is only the work of the Spirit and we have no responsibility to witness, but in our witness we must remind ourselves to rely on the Spirit to move hearts.
Amen, Bev, Chris and Sharon. This is such a meaningful quote. Iron sharpens iron.
2. Make observations and then write about the one that impacted you the most and why.
– the childhood friend of Herod (Antipas) was a prophet and a teacher
– Barnabas and Saul were sent “by the Holy Spirit on a mission
– on the mission they met a Jewish “sorcerer”
– the sorcerer worked with the Governor
– the Governor wanted to hear the Word of God, but the sorcerer tried to stop it
– Saul acknowledged to the sorcerer that he was evil and even called for the Lord to make the man blind, which He did
– the Governor became a believer due to the events he witnessed
I think the one that made the most impact is how the childhood friend of Herod was a believer. It’s interesting to think that the Romans might have been impacted by Jesus’ ministry. Especially since he probably would have been raised to believe in many gods.
3. Have you ever had the experience that the four men had in hearing from the Lord after worshiping and fasting together? (verses 1-3) If so, share.
I don’t recall anything like this in my life.
4. Make observations about Paul’s sermon in verses 13-39. What stood out to you the most and why?
– Paul and the others left and went to another town
– they went to the synagogue on the Sabbath
– they were asked to preach there
– Paul told the story of the Israelites in Egypt, the Exodus and the movement to the promised land
– he told them how God gave them judges to rule and then kings, especially David
– Jesus was from David’s line
– he told of John the Baptist, who spoke of repentance of sin and being born new again through baptism
– Paul encouraged them saying they could be saved too
– His own people rejected Him and had Him killed, but even though He was put on a cross and buried in a tomb, He lives because many people saw Him after His death
– His body didn’t decay
– Paul speaks of two Psalms that explain this
– He says there is forgiveness for their sins and no one, not even Moses could not accomplish what Jesus did
I guess the whole sermon stands out to me. Paul is reiterating the story of the Jewish history, so the Jews there would understand. The gentiles might not. It all would seem pretty fantastic if I were there.
Since I am reading the Bible in a year this year, I have noticed that this story is told over and over again throughout scripture. It’s like the people forget and need reminding why they are in the position they are in at the time. I find that interesting. We need to remind ourselves, when we get caught up in the world that there is purpose for us. We are Paul now. We are to spread the Word. I wonder if my witnessing should include this story. Maybe a shortened version.
Laura, I love what you have noticed in scripture through your reading the Bible in a year. I love this bible app now that I have it for TLC. I think I will try to add this to my day. I’ve struggled to keep up with the schedule our church is doing. It’s so easy to listen to the Bible and as you say, it does still impact you.
I love your last paragraph too, Laura. I struggle with doing the Bible in a year, but you inspire me! This is golden: We need to remind ourselves, when we get caught up in the world that there is purpose for us. Amen!
4. Make observations about Paul’s sermon in verses 13-39. What stood out to you the most and why? *the ruler of the synagogue is prompted to appeal to Paul for a word of encouragement to the people. *Paul goes on repeating the history of Israel down to the resurrection of Jesus and finally to his own witness in verse 32, “And we bring you the good news…” through verse 39, “and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.” ***What stands out to me is the use of the word “freed” which in my bible gives a foot note saying this in the Greek is “justified” and used twice in this verse. Paul is helping them see that the law which they hoped to justify them to God previously, could not and now belief in Jesus has come to free them for good. This must have been a real challenge to their thinking after generations of believing the law was the only way. Only the Holy Spirit could convince hearts of this argument given to Paul.
Tuesday: Acts 13:40-52
5. How does Paul end his sermon in verses 40-41? Paul gives a strict warning from scripture. The shocking thing is not so much his warning, but that the people responded with faith.
6. I wonder if preaching is different in third world countries, for I doubt many American preachers could do this. We tried a Paul Washer sermon at our church and while some liked it, others really were upset at how harsh he was. I wonder how Jonathan Edwards would fare today. Thoughts? I do not know Paul Washer, but do know of Jonathan Edwards. I believe young people today are eager to hear truth. The young adults in our small group want to hear the word and they want to know scripture to refute the crazy ways the world is headed. I think young people are looking for pastors who tell the truth and are not afraid to say it like it is. Our pastor has been very straight forward with the truth of scripture and taking on topics that our culture has twisted. I believe in part this is why our church is growing. Our church is holding to the truths of the reformation and confronting the culture with boldness.
7. Make observations about the various responses of the people in 42-52.
8. What strikes you the most and why?
9. What is your God shot for all of Acts 13?

8. What strikes you the most and why? Those who the gift was for, chose to trust in themselves instead and the Holy Spirit again is at work.
9. What is your God shot for all of Acts 13? My biggest take away is the work of the Holy Spirit in all of this account, along with the word of God and the faithful witness of the disciples. These three things work together.
Love your God shot, Chris!
Oops! I ended up posting twice. I tried pushing the back button when I realized I had not completed all the questions, but it went through anyway! Just ignore the unfinished post 🙃
Huge answer to prayer! My daughter and son-in-law are joining us this Thursday for our small group!! I’m so excited and prayerful for the Holy Spirit to work in their lives. I really believe the enemy has had his way in my son-in-laws life and I’m hoping he will learn the truth in our study. Praying the Spirit will soften his heart and the witness of the young people in our group will help him believe what is taught in scripture. He has many questions right now about his faith and I’m hopeful that finding the answers will make him a solid believer. Thank you all for praying.
Oh, Chris! Praising God! Prayers continue for your daughter and son in law!
Chris, I’m praying with you.
Praise God for this answered prayer. Asking God to do his good work in your son in law’s life. 💕
I spoke to my daughter and she said she spoke to her husband about his questions for 2 hours last night and left him no choice but to attend our study due to the number of lies he’s believing from the internet & TikTok in particular. Prayers he’s so glad he came when Thursday comes. 🙏🏻
I will be praying that your son in law will be happy he came. I recently heard from a speaker that TikTok targets and audience to turn them away from anything godly and to turn them towards the worldly things right now.
I’m also praying for you to find a doctor that will help you with the health issues you’re experiencing Chris. And I pray for a new friend to come into your life too.
onday: Acts 13:1-12
I was struck how the Lord spoke to the four men worshipping and fasting. My daughter Sally had this experience in high school when she and her friends fasted lunches and prayed — and it ended up bringing the Jesus Film to a secular high school.
2. Make observations and then write about the one that impacted you the most and why. 5 men in Antioch (prophets and teachers, Paul, Barnabas and three others) who served the Lord, were also fasting During this time the Holy Ghost told them to separate Barnabas and Saul for the work prepared for them They fasted and prayed, and then the three laid hands on Saul and Barnabas and sent them away Led by the Spirit Paul and Barnabas ( Jonh Mark went with them) begin their travels and sail to Cyprus, preaching in synagogues They go through the island reaching Phapos (at the western end) where they encounter a Jewish false prophet/sorceror named Barjesus at the residence of Sergius Paulu Sergius Paulus was the Roman proconsul of Cyprus and desired Saul and Barnabas to come speak with him (desired to hear the Word of God) Barjesus opposes everything they say, seeking to turn SP away from true faith Saul/Paul (filled with the Spirit to discern) fixes his eyes on Barjesus and denounces him as a child of the devil (crafty and full of mischief), enemy of righteouseness, perverting the ways of the Lord Paul pronounces judgement of blindness (for a season), blinded BJ has to have someone to lead/guide him After hearing Paul/Banabs speak and seeing what happened to BJ, SP becomes a believer
What stands out to me today is the direct and miraculous intervention of the Holy Spirit in the sending forth of Saul/Barnabas, and also in the encouter with SP/BJ. Paul already knew he would be a witness to Jews/Gentiles, but now the HS was directly letting others know. By serving the Lord and fasting/praying these men were ready to hear the dirction of the Spirit. Then, too, as Paul/Barnabas witness to SP (a Roman) the Spirit gives Paul the discernment to confront and condemn BJ. The miracle of his blindness authenticates thier message to SP. A healing in reverse so to speak but none the less miraculous.
I have to wonder since the blindness was not permanent, did BJ ever see the truth and repent during that time?
3. Have you ever had the experience that the four men had in hearing from the Lord after worshiping and fasting together? (verses 1-3) If so, share. No, I have not.
4. Make observations about Paul’s sermon in verses 13-39. What stood out to you the most and why? Paul gives a capsule summary of Israel’s history and relationship with God beginning with the exodus>40 yr. wandering>conquering in Canaan>judges(450 yr)>Samuel> desire for king, God gives them Saul (40 yr)>God removes Saul as lifts up David to be king>God’s promise to raise a Savior (from David’s line) Paul declares Jesus to be the promised Savior Paul speaks of JTB’s ministry and how he said he was NOT the promised One Paul then appeals to them as brethren from the seed of Abraham, believing/fearing God, this message is for YOU capsule summary of trial>death>burial>resurrection of Jesus (fulfillment of all the scriptures/prophecy) GLAD TIDINGS (good news!), God has fulfilled His promise! Paul quotes scripture proving that Jesus is the Savior and through Him there is forgiveness of sin
What stands out to me is how Paul activates their prior knowlege of history/scripture and leads them to Jesus using fulfilled prophecy. Here is also the clear message of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, and that through Him is salvation offered.
I have no clue as to why my post looks like this. It was perfectly organized when I typed it. I hope you can make sense out of it.
Mine has done that too🥹…it is readable.
Such a good point, Cheryl. They hear the scripture they know….yet reject it…..What stands out to me is how Paul activates their prior knowledge of history/scripture and leads them to Jesus using fulfilled prophecy.
5. How does Paul end his sermon in verses 40-41?
Paul is warning them not to reject the Resurrection of Jesus. The Resurrection was foretold by the Prophets, but many did not get it or connect the dots.
6. I wonder if preaching is different in third world countries, for I doubt many American preachers could do this. We tried a Paul Washer sermon at our church and while some liked it, others really were upset at how harsh he was. I wonder how Jonathan Edwards would fare today. Thoughts?
Our society has changed greatly, and younger generations want “feel good” sermons. It is worrisome to see the NAR movement, which is growing fast, yet it is full false doctrine and shams. I think Jonathan Edwards would fare well, only with a small percentage of very serious Christians. I fear apostasy is creeping in to many parts of the world. I think many third world countries having large underground churches and Christianity is growing, where in wealthy modern countries, it seems to be decreasing. We have so much in this country, but is our focus strong in the Lord?
7. Make observations about the various responses of the people in 42-52.
The Gentiles and many of the Jews wanted to hear more from Paul and Barnabas. On the next Sabbath, the crowd was large and the Jewish leaders became jealous and were verbally abusive. Paul and Barnabas were bold and said that they would take the message of eternal life to the Gentiles. The Gentiles rejoiced and glorified the Word of God. Many believed and God’s Word spread throughout the region. The religious leader began to incite persecution of Paul and Barnabas, so they left the area.
8. What strikes you the most and why?
The jealousy of the Jews. It still remains. They turned down the free gift of eternal life because of their pride and desire for power and control.
9. What is your God shot for all of Acts 13?
‘Though they were persecuted and mistreating, “the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” The change in Saul, now Paul, was genuine!
Patti, I wrote my answers and posted before I read others comments. So obviously I agree with your thoughts on the “feel good” sermons.
Also I think the affluence of many in our country and lack of true needs compared to third world countries has dulled many from seeing their true needs which are spiritual needs. Where Christians around the world have little of this worlds goods they trust God for literally every thing.
I agree with you, Bev! Our society is so self centered, many do not turn to God, until they are devastated by poor health or crisis. How our Father desires the hearts who desire HIM more that what the world has to offer…which fades quickly.
Tuesday: Acts 13:40-52
5. How does Paul end his sermon in verses 40-41?
—After preaching his sermon that shows how the Old Testament was preparing for Christ’s coming and that Jesus was the way to have forgiveness of sins and not the law he points out how the ruling Israelites in Jerusalem rejected the Messiah. So then Paul gives a warning from Habakkuk. Weirsbe said that “Paul used these words to warn the Jews that, if they did not believe and receive the Gospel, they would perish like the unbelieving Israel of days past.” Weirsbe also commented that “The “work” referred to here is God’s program of saving the Gentiles. How unbelievable this must have been to the Jews!”
6. I wonder if preaching is different in third world countries, for I doubt many American preachers could do this. We tried a Paul Washer sermon at our church and while some liked it, others really were upset at how harsh he was. I wonder how Jonathan Edwards would fare today. Thoughts?
—Good question about third world preaching. I certainly don’t know but proclaiming the truth is essential regardless of where it’s taught. It seems to me we have an American society today that is all about feelings and if truth makes people uncomfortable or goes against their feelings they reject it. But yet I see a generation hungry for truth and just like with Paul and Barnabas crowds gather to hear the truth. I think of Charlie Kirk. It seems to me any place where the truth of God’s Word is taught with conviction of the Holy Spirit people will come and listen. Boldness has its place when it comes to the Gospel of Christ. But Wiersbe noted that Paul preached the Gospel of the grace of God (verse 43) and that is the message we are to proclaim today. I would comment that even the message of grace can feel harsh at times. Especially when truth of the Word demands more of us than we might want to give or change.
7. Make observations about the various responses of the people in 42-52.
—Verse 43 Some Jews and Gentile proselytes to Judaism immediately believed.
—Verse 44 says the following week many Gentiles from the city turned out to hear Paul and Barnabas preach the Word.
—Verse 45 Some Jews saw the crowds and were jealous and tried to slander and argue with Paul. They rejected the Gospel.
—Verse 48 The Gentiles were glad and thankful to the Lord for his message of salvation being available to them and they spread the Gospel throughout the region.
—Verse 50 Women who were influencers and leaders in the city were stirred up against Paul and Barnabas and incited s mob to run them out of town.
—I love how verse 52 ends the chapter. “And the believers were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.”
8. What strikes you the most and why?
—What I just noted from verse 52 that the believers were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. In spite of persecution from the religious leaders and opposition from the leaders in the community the believers had fulfilling joy and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
9. What is your God shot for all of Acts 13?
—It would be that from eternity past God has had a plan to redeem the world. Paul’s reiteration of the Old Testament history as he noted it in this chapter bears out God’s working to bring it to the culmination of the coming of Jesus into the World for all (Jew and Gentile) alike to be saved. As Isaiah’s quote in verse 47 says “to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth”.
Paul and Barnabas could never have imagined that over 2,000 years later salvation would be experienced by a group of ladies like each of you and me in a place called America would benefit from God’s amazing plan of grace. 💕
Agree on God’s sovereignty and your whole post-such a relief that eternity is not our responsibility but we can be a part of his big plan.
Sunday:
How did you experience the power, joy, or peace of the Lord this week? – It’s been a while since I’ve been on, but I think of you all and pray for this group of great ladies. We have been at our 2nd home, (a 5th wheel in Ider Alabama) a campground that is based on God Family Country and what a difference that makes. The peace of having so many like-minded people around that just love hanging around a fire and having espresso or just talking. The friendships that we’ve made there in just a short time is amazing. It is a place that I can’t explain, but when people come and visit, they know exactly what I mean.
What a great place, Julie. A balm for the soul, I’m sure.
Oh, Julie! It is so good to see you here! Your 2nd home sounds like a perfect place to meet friends who love God. Indescribable.
Julie, How sweet to see you here. Your second home sounds like a blessed place to be. 💕
So glad you are back! We have missed you ♥️♥️
Monday: Acts 13:1-12
2. Make observations and then write about the one that impacted you the most and why. – Barnabas and Saul were called by the Holy Spirit to go to Cyprus and they listened and were obedient. Because of their obedience the enemy put in place Elymas, a sorcerer to try and block the work of the Holy Spirit. Saul directed by the Holy Spirit called Elymas out and made others aware of who he was.
3. Have you ever had the experience that the four men had in hearing from the Lord after worshiping and fasting together? (verses 1-3) If so, share. – At the campground, we’ve had some people leave that started causing strife. Four of us got together and walked the property and anointed the land with oil and rebuked the work of the enemy from the grounds. We prayed over the owners and all the lots and rigs there and the gate house and entrances. Peace was felt after we did that, we definitely felt the Holy Spirit as we walked around.
4. Make observations about Paul’s sermon in verses 13-39. What stood out to you the most and why? – Paul reminded the Israelites and the believing Gentiles all that had happened before them and what Jesus did for them. In simple terms Paul preached the Word of God to them from start to finish.
Love your story of praying around the campground. I was awake in the night praying over all the warfare going on in my family. Thank you for sharing. Good to know we are not alone in the spiritual battle.
My daughter shared that she and her husband are “going to war” against the enemy. I love that she has this perspective.
Thank you for sharing this, Julie. I love how you prayed, anointed the land, rebuked the enemy. Praising God for His faithfulness and for cleansing of all of this area. I pray that the Holy Spirit will pour out the presence of the Lord upon all who are in your camp.
Love your anointing story! I anoint my classroom each school year now. I have the best students! I recently have had school troubles so I went around and did the anointing again. I do believe it works.
Sorry I’ve been awol (I don’t even know what those letters mean) but I’ve had one crisis after another. All first world ones, but have me pretty distracted. It may be spiritual warfare, I don’t know. But I hope I’m back. Thanks for your grace.
Oh, Dee! I am praying over you and your property right now. Father God, ruler of all, creator of this universe, we Praise You and love you with all our hearts. We know You are all powerful and we pray that You will drive out these demonic powers from Dee’s property, and wherever this attack is coming at her. Lord God, in the Mighty Name of Jesus, we ask for the enemy to be crushed, and what was meant to harm Dee, will be gone, and healing and repair will take place. Please keep her financially sound and display Your power in a visible way, so that she will know the answer to all that is happening, is coming from You alone, Lord. We pray to see the power of Your hand upon Dee and this situation. Even if this is first world, You are interested. Help us to trust You and Glorify You, in this time of need. Help Dee to see and experience Your love and care. We love You Lord. In the Name of Jesus, I pray.
I agree with every word of Patti’s prayer. 🙏🏻 Amen and Amen.
Amen!
Amen to that!
Thank you dear sisters. Situation hasn’t changed but I have much more peace!!!
AWOL…absent without leave….
HAHAHA. I should know that from my husband’s service in the military-so many acronyms.
Wednesday: Acts 14:1-18
10. Make observations for Acts 14:1-7
—What happened in Iconium was a repeat of what had happened in Antioch. Paul and Barnabas went into the Jewish synagogue and preached the Good News where it says a great number of both Jews and Greeks became believers. Then some religious Jews spurned God’s message and stirred up others against them. Those leaders were determined to kill Paul and Barnabas and kill their message but they just moved on to Lycaonia and did the same. Verse 7 “And there they preached the Good News.”
11. I am most interested in this: “They spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.” I want more details. How do you think they spoke?
—I think they spoke with the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives. I would base that on verse 52 that just ended chapter 13. “And the believers were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” Paul and Barnabas were experiencing great persecution and threats to their very lives yet it says in 14:3 in the NASB “Therefore they spent a long time there speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord,”. The NLT says “preaching boldly about the grace of the Lord”. In spite of division and opposition they were grace filled. And the rest of verse 3 says “…..And the Lord proved their message was true by giving them power to do miraculous signs and wonders.” NLT.
So their zeal for the Lord was manifested by their grace filled message and affirmed by God’s power given to them to do miraculous signs and wonders. It all revealed the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives. And it was a spirit of grace reflected in Paul and Barnabas.
12. Make observations for Acts 14:8-18 What stands out the most and why?
—I am immediately taken in by this miracle of healing the man with crippled feet from birth. Because of my granddaughter who was born with spina bifida I personally know what crippled feet from birth look like. And even in today’s world with amazing medical advances no surgeries can correct those defects. The response of the crowd to want to diefy Paul and Barnabas doesn’t surprise me. If Aerilyn’s feet and lower legs were immediately made whole and normal it would be unbelievable.
It was really important for Paul and Barnabas to make it known to these people that they were just human beings and not gods and to turn the focus back onto the one true living God who had done this miracle and for them to hear the message of the Good News they were bringing them.
I think that’s right. The Holy Spirit.
I was noticing the difference between The Chosen and a Series called Faithful Women of the Bible. Both take liberties with the actual events, yet the Chosen feels anointed and Faithful Women does not.
I appreciate all of your detailed insights, Bev. “It all revealed the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives. And it was a spirit of grace reflected in Paul and Barnabas.”
I love that you share about how amazed everyone would be if your granddaughter’s spina bifida was suddenly gone! It would be such a visual miracle! And “unbelievable” …would we question it….yet God can do anything.
Oh, Bev, your sweet granddaughter-how we struggle on earth with the hard things we don’t understand. I love your insights.
10. Make observations for Acts 14:1-7
11. I am most interested in this: “They spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.” I want more details. How do you think they spoke?
I think the Holy Spirit filled them and was working through them, giving them powerful words of wisdom from God.
Yes, the Holy Spirit knows what each one needs to hear.
5. How does Paul end his sermon in verses 40-41?
He tells the people to beware, that the things he tells them are true and they should listen.
6. I wonder if preaching is different in third world countries, for I doubt many American preachers could do this. We tried a Paul Washer sermon at our church and while some liked it, others really were upset at how harsh he was. I wonder how Jonathan Edwards would fare today. Thoughts?
I’m not familiar with those pastors, however I don’t think that people today want to be admonished for their behaviors so I’m guessing it wouldn’t go well 🤷🏻♀️.
7. Make observations about the various responses of the people in 42-52.
– some begged them to teach more
– some followed them
8. What strikes you the most and why?
The Jews that still won’t believe are surprising to me. After everything they have seen or heard, they still want to incite riots and cause trouble. Even after Paul has performed the miracle on the sorcerer and made him blind.
9. What is your God shot for all of Acts 13?
The miracle that Paul performed by making the man blind is my God shot. God was really with him to make him be able to do that,
10. Make observations for Acts 14:1-7
– Paul and Barnabas went to another community to preach
– many Jews and Greeks became believers
– Jews tried to sabotage what they said, to the Gentiles
– They continued to preach for a long time in this community
– They performed miracles; the Lord was with them
– The people took sides
– Some Gentiles and Jews decided to attack them and stone them
– Paul and Barnabas decide to leave
11. I am most interested in this: “They spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.” I want more details. How do you think they spoke?
They were most likely animated about their experiences. The NLT says they spoke with “such power.”
I like the “such power” paraphrase.
I find it so interesting that Paul, whom God made blind (in order to open his eyes spiritually), is chosen to perform the same miracle on this man, except its the proconsul who believes and not the man as far as we are told.
I love that, Chris! God’s ways are amazing! So beyond our thinking!
Thursday: Acts 14:19-28
13. Make observations for verses 19:23. What stands out and why?
—Jews who opposed Paul and Barnabas from Antioch and Iconium followed them to Lystra and turned the crowds to their side and they stoned Paul and drug his body out of the town and left him for dead. As all the believers gathered around him he got up and went back into town. Then he and Barnabas moved on to the next town of Derbe and continued to preach the Good News and many more people believed and became disciples. Paul and Barnabas returned to each of the places where they had been before and encouraged the believers in those places. They set up leadership in those churches and turned them over to the Lord’s care.
— I am impressed with the passion and courage they had to go back to the places where they taken the Good News even in the face of death. Nothing deterred them from doing God’s work.
14. Make observations for verses 24-28.
—Paul and Barnabas traveled back to Antioch where their journey had begun. Verse 27 sums up what their return to the church there looked like. “Upon arriving in Antioch, they called the church together and reported everything God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles, too.” Verse 28 says “And they stayed there with the believers for a long time.” It would seem to me that was a time of much needed rest and refreshing of being with God’s people at Antioch.
15. What is your God shot for Acts 14.
—It was an amazing work of Paula and Barnabas sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ and many people becoming believers and then they did the work of making disciples by teaching, training and encouraging those believers who would carry on the work of ministry to the lost making more disciples. It was and is a pattern for the church.
I am also impressed with them not being deterred from ministry!
Tuesday: Acts 13:40-52
5. How does Paul end his sermon in verses 40-41? – They warned them to be very careful and said, “Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you. Look you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.
6. I wonder if preaching is different in third world countries, for I doubt many American preachers could do this. We tried a Paul Washer sermon at our church and while some liked it, others really were upset at how harsh he was. I wonder how Jonathan Edwards would fare today. Thoughts? – I think it depends on the group of people that are listening. If they truly have a relationship with Jesus, they will want to hear the truth even though it may be a bit harsh to hear. It may be convicting, but I think those who truly believe will take what was given to them and ponder what was really being sad and examine their lives. Others who just want to always feel good, or don’t have a relationship with Jesus may think it’s too hard and fall away.
7. Make observations about the various responses of the people in 42-52. – Some wanted them to continue talking and wanted to follow them. Others didn’t like the attention they were getting so started talking badly about Paul and Barnabas to stir up dissension among the crowd. Paul and Barnabas try defending themselves and explain why they had to speak the word of God. The Gentiles were glad and honored the Word. Paul and Barnabas wiped the dust from their shoes and left when they saw the trouble the Jews were making.
8. What strikes you the most and why? – The Gentiles being glad and honoring the word of the Lord. It makes me think that the longer we are Christians the easier it is to get lazy in our beliefs. We lose the fire we had as a new believer. The Gentiles are on fire, the way we as ‘older’ Christians should still be.
9. What is your God shot for all of Acts 13?- That God placed Paul and Barnabas in every situation along that journey. He gave everyone who saw Paul a chance to hear the gospel and to come to know the truth. Not all believed, some fell away, but in the end, those who needed to hear with in the path that God set Paul and Barnabas on.
I agree, true believers will want to hear the truth-we are drawn to it by the Holy Spirit-others turn away.
Wednesday: Acts 14:1-18
10. Make observations for Acts 14:1-7 – Paul and Barnabas didn’t let the negativity of the world stop them. They continued to preach the word of the Lord and were given power to do miraculous signs and wonders. The people were again divided, some believing and some stirring up trouble.
11. I am most interested in this: “They spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.” I want more details. How do you think they spoke? – My NIV version says they spoke so effectively. To me it sounds like they spoke with authority and boldness. They didn’t cower in their speech but spoke as if God was speaking through them. I know sometimes I say or write things and then go back and think, wow, I said that. I know it was God who provided the words to me.
12. Make observations for Acts 14:8-18 What stands out the most and why? – Paul and Barnabas go from people listening and believing that they were speaking the word of the Lord to some throwing in confusion by saying they are gods coming to them in human form. This one statement made others start to worship them instead of worshipping the message they were giving. But Paul, Barnabas and the disciples tried to stop their thinking right away by tearing their clothes and turning their attention back to God. It’s so important to make sure we understand what truly is being said before we react in a way that could sway people in the wrong direction.
Hi. I’m having trouble with my laptop, so haven’t been able to post any comments. It would take too long on my tablet with just one finger, lol. I’m reading the scriptures and everything that’s been posted. Back soon, I hope. PS Absent WithOut Leave AWOL military term
Thanks Cheryl – for absent without leave! 🙂
Praying you can be back on again soon, Cheryl!
I’ve had this experience as well in your answer to 11.
Thursday: Acts 14:19-28
13. Make observations for verses 19-23. What stands out and why? – Paul got stoned by unbelievers and yet went back to the same place to preach again. He truly was on a mission to spread the Good News of Jesus. He didn’t let anything stop him from doing what God had called him to do.
14. Make observations for verses 24-28. – They went from town to town and continued to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. They appointed elders to help them in each church. They finally went back after completing the work that they were given by God.
15. What is your God shot for Acts 14. – Perseverance, determination, obedience and faith and trust in God. Having these qualities and putting God first will get me through the trying times.
Love your insights, Julie and I love you God shot!
Same!
So good Julie on what will get us through trying times!
12. Make observations for Acts 14:8-18 What stands out the most and why?
– Paul and Barnabas were in Lystra.
– They happened upon a crippled man who had never walked. He listened to their preaching.
– The Holy Spirit must have come over Paul because he “knew” he had to heal him.
– He ordered the man to stand and walk, and he did.
– The people watching thought Paul and Barnabas were the gods Zeus and Hermes!
– They tried to offer sacrifices to the two, but Paul and Barnabas tore their clothing and shouted that they were just humans and God had done the healing.
– They explained how They were there to bring the Word to the people and that He is the one who brings the people good.
– The people did not want to hear this and the two had to force them to not sacrifice to them.
I think the part that stands out is how they knew they had to heal him. The Holy Spirit had to fill them at that time! I sometimes feel like I am not “in my own senses” when I sing for our worship team. I wonder if that’s how they felt?
Interesting about your wonderful worship time when you are carried away…
13. Make observations for verses 19:23. What stands out and why?
– Jews arrived from Antioch, stirred up the people and got them to help to stone Paul.
– They thought he was dead, but they were wrong!
– He and Barnabas left for Derbe.
– They returned to all the places they were persecuted to continue to spread the Good News.
– They encouraged the believers to press in, even though they would be persecuted.
– They appointed elders of the churches. They would help care for the people. They put the elders in the care of the Lord.
The thing that stands out to me, here is that Paul and Barnabas went back to the places where they have been persecuted. Especially in Lystra, where they had just been stoned! They were on a mission and would not let anything stop them. They were not afraid.
I can’t imagine surviving a stoning and going back to that place and those people. Only God could bring someone to this behavior.
Wednesday: Acts 14:1-18
10. Make observations for Acts 14:1-7
I’ve had a busy few days and just catching up on comments. Don’t think I can add to observations made thus far.
11. I am most interested in this: “They spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.” I want more details. How do you think they spoke?
I do believe the Holy Spirit gave them power in their speech, but I also know how Tim Keller often speaks about the culture of his audience and surely, Paul knew his audience in a way to make his speech persuasive.
12. Make observations for Acts 14:8-18 What stands out the most and why?
The crippled man is miraculously healed by God, through Paul and the towns people try to offer sacrifices to the apostles, until Paul rebukes them, only to later be stoned. Moving on they preach to more towns and make many disciples, and even returned to the previous towns helping establish their churches.
The Lord calls who he will call and the strength of the testimony doesn’t always mean believers will follow.
So true, Chris. Only the Spirit can open eyes — even a woman close to death I am visiting does not want to talk about facing God
How sad, Dee. Prayers for her heart to soften.
14. Make observations for verses 24-28.
– Paul and Barnabas traveled back through towns where they had already visited.
– They preached.
– They traveled by ship back to Antioch, in Syria, where they had started.
– They called the church together to report what they had done through God.
– They reported that the Gentiles were growing in faith.
– They stayed for a very long time.
15. What is your God shot for Acts 14.
I’m thinking my God shot is the reporting that Paul and Barnabas felt they needed to accomplish, after they had the experiences. It’s because our church body is figuring out that the former elders (who have now mostly left the church) did not do this for us! They spoke only with the Pastor who stood firm in his convictions. They never let our congregation know that there was a problem. Now it’s too late and these long standing people are gone or are leaving. Some of us are mad that they treated us this way. They left us to “rot!” I did ask for church wide meeting two years ago but was told it would not happen. So, we have constructed a letter and are getting signatures to actually have the meeting now. We hope to have a discussion about the doctrine and understand what the Bible says about women preaching in church, because we feel that the church is the people, not the pastor. The pastor needs to know that we are either with him or we aren’t. I have offered to lead a Bible study this summer, to dig into scripture for ourselves. I have many on onboard with me. We also understand that this does not jeopardize our salvation! We are trying to be Bereans and understand.
Wow, Laura. Good for you to head this up with all that you have going on. I love your passion for your church. It’s so easy to walk away and find an established church, but as you say, the church is the people. I pray you will find peace about what you are going through and wisdom for the leadership.
Amen!
Thursday: Acts 14:19-28
13. Make observations for verses 19:23. What stands out and why?
Jews stoned Paul and supposed he was dead. He was dragged out of the city and left. He rose up when the disciples gathered around him, and entered back into the city until the next day when he went on to Derbe with Barnabas. Wow! Made many disciples in Derbe and went back to encourage the other 3 cities of new Christians, appointing elders through prayer and fasting.
The sheer determination and courage to continue, despite persecution stands out to me.
14. Make observations for verses 24-28.
The amazing work done for the Lord continues in 4 more cities and then a respite in Antioch. It stands out to me that the disciples are in need of rest after their hard work and that they give God all the credit.
15. What is your God shot for Acts 14.
The word of God must be preached despite persecution and those who are chosen will believe without argument. In addition, Christians are intended to support one another and especially the missionaries in their journeys, and give God credit for all He does.
Friday: Tara Lee
16. What Tara and share what stands out and why.
I like how she brings out how the Jews are upset about the Gentiles and don’t get along as they don’t believe. I also like how she emphasizes the encouragement Paul gives believers and the doctrine of common grace.
Saturday: Pray your Application
17. How might you apply this. Now pray for help here.
Lord, give me wisdom by your Holy Spirit as we witness to those around us and not rely on fine sounding arguments. Help me to be bold like Paul and always give you credit where it is due. Also, help me encourage other believers.
Also, my son-in-law did come Thursday, though he was very nervous. He agreed to come back. The lesson and sharing was very encouraging-all about why we believe and how to handle doubt. I’m so encouraged. Please pray against spiritual warfare as I believe it is ramped up against us.
So exciting. Oh Lord, please keep moving in this young man’s heart.
I will be praying against the enemy. May God place a hedge of protection around your family. Lord, be with Chris and her family and open the eyes of her son in law.
Thank you both!
