That is exactly what we are going to do with the Beatitudes this week,
together!

Sunday: Thankful Christians
Both Scripture and research indicate that thankful Christians experience significantly more joy than those who are unthankful. When Ann Voskamp started making her list of 1,000 gifts for which she was grateful, a friend observed: “You have changed. You have more joy!” So, each Sunday, we begin by asking you to share something you are thankful for, especially a way God has brought goodness into your life this week. For example, last week I mentioned that some prison ministry friends came for the weekend and introduced me to an excellent book on the soul by John Ortberg. I am also so thankful to have the ground in Northern Door County simply covered with forget-me-nots! It always reminds me of this verse from Song of Songs: “She ran after her lovers, but Me, she forgot.” We are going to press into the Lover of our Souls this summer!
1. How did you experience the goodness of the Lord this last week?
2. Do you have any thoughts on the direction we are headed or any prayers to offer?
Monday: Happy Souls and The Lord
Arthur Brooks, a Christian who teaches the most popular class at Harvard (The Science of Happiness) has done extensive research demonstrating that the four most common variables in happy people are faith, family, friendship, and meaningful work — but faith is the vital factor, affecting the other three profoundly.
3. In Jesus’ Beatitudes, the word blessed can also be translated happy. I’d like you to paraphrase the following Beatitudes in your own words. The first four deal with our relationship with God. Use your own translation, plus look at how Peterson paraphrased them in The Message. Then try your hand at your own paraphrase, using the word “happy” instead of “blessed.” I’ve given an example with the 1st in red.
A. 3 “You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.
The times I have known I have absolutely no control are the times I’ve fallen on You. Help me realize I don’t have control over anything and to keep leaning on You all day long.
Your turn:
B. 4 “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
C. 5 “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.
D. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
Tuesday: Chew, Chew, Chew

4. We are to chew on Scripture like a cow chews its cud. Find out what you can about cows chewing their cud and how you might apply it.
5. Psalm 1 also gives us the key to happiness, to thriving, to flourishing. It is meditating on His Word day and night. Keller often says that Christianity is organic — rather than mechanical. As we abide in the Vine, we grow. Psalm 1 says we should do this day and night, to be like the tree planted by Living Waters.
6. Again, look at Matthew 5:3-6. We’re going to chew!
A. The ironic thing about Christianity, says Tim Keller, is that sorrow can lead to greater joy. Why might that be, according to verse 3? Have you experienced this? If so, be specific.
B. How have you experienced the truth of verse 4, as paraphrased in The Message? Be specific.
C. Where is an area where you are growing in contentment circumstantially? Be specific.
D. What do your habits during the day reveal about the depth of your hunger for God? Think not only about your morning quiet time, but what you read, watch, listen to…
Wednesday: Happy Souls and One Another
So often, we think wealthy and beautiful people are happy, but research shows that this is not always the case. In the May/June 2025 issue of Christianity Today there is an article on “Measuring the Good Life.” A familiar story from church teams that take a week to go into a poverty-stricken country returns saying how amazed they were that “despite their many material needs, their hosts seemed to enjoy a deeper sense of happiness than many Americans living in affluent cities and comfortable suburbs. They were generous, with deep commitments ot their faith, families, and communities.”
Steve and I lived in Nebraska for 25 years, for they were one of the few states that truly needed doctors, especially in the rural central part of the state. Many farmers struggled financially, but many had a faith and a joy. Nebraska’s state motto was “The Good Life.” The Beatitudes now turn to how we deal with our fellow man, and indeed how this can lead to happiness and “the good life.”
7. Using your own translation and The Message, do your own paraphrase. I’ve given an example for the first in red.
A. 7 “You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘care-full,’ you find yourselves cared for.
You are happy when you see others with Your Father’s eyes, and truly listen to them, love them, and find ways to meet their needs.
Your Turn:
B.8 “You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.
C.9 “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.
D. “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.
Thursday: Chew, Chew, Chew

8. Think of a time when you found real joy in giving sacrificial love.
9. Nicky Gumble says of verse 7 is “A key step in being pure in heart is allowing others to see our brokenness.” How have you humbly done this and been surprised by joy?
10. Verse 9. Think of a situation where a brother is tearing another brother down, but you have endeavored to bring peace in some way. What have you done that has been helpful?
11. When people are mocking you or scorning you, how can the promise of this verse help overcome your pain?
Friday: Anything Become Radioactive?
In his sermons on meditating, Tim Keller talks about how through chewing a verse can become radioactive, and that is when you know God is speaking soul to soul with you, deep calling to deep. Then you need to slow down and ask Him to tell you more, to help you truly understand.
12. If that happened this week, slow down — then share here.

Sunday: Thankful Christians
1. How did you experience the goodness of the Lord this last week?
—My brother and his wife from Missouri visited us for a few days and we were able to have a cookout on Thursday evening with our kids who live here and my sister and her husband. It was just a very sweet time of family fun and fellowship. I am thankful for believing family that likes to laugh and share good times.
2. Do you have any thoughts on the direction we are headed or any prayers to offer?
—Well Dee, the cow chewing its cud cracked me up. I have opportunity to see that quite often where I live but honestly as I watched it I thought that is going to gross Laura out when she sees this. 😄
I enjoy seeing a cow laying down in a green pasture chewing its cud. Because we have a huge feed lot 3 miles from our town that holds 100,000 cattle our daughter always says the cows out on the hills in the green pastures are the happy cows not the feedlot cows. 😊 Pastoral scenes of cattle or sheep feeding is a very good picture of contentment. The fast paced world we live in very few people know how to sit and relax and eat for nourishment and enjoy it like animals do when they have the right conditions. I am delighted that you are taking us and down a path to learn to feed on the Word of God and enjoy it. To hear from the Lover of our souls.
Since we have officially as of this weekend entered a season of war in our country I believe it is important that we be a people of much prayer and that we immerse ourselves in God’s Word to find peace of mind and comfort in the midst of the trouble war brings. Our God reigns and I need reminded often of that.
Beautiful and fun post, Bev! Thank you for your thoughtful words on immersing ourselves in God’s Word. Our God reigns.
I like your reminder to be a people of much prayer and be in the Word. And yes, the cows 😂
Bev, how fun to imagine the cows lying in contentment. And to hear about your family fun and get-togethers. Praise God for that! Yes, thank you for the reminder to be earnestly prayerful in light of what is going on right now. Listening to Charity Gayle’s “I Speak Jesus”. The first few lines: I just want to speak the name of Jesus over every heart and every mind. ‘Cause I know there is peace within His presence, I speak Jesus…Your name is power, your name is healing, your name is light, break every stronghold, shine through the shadows, burn like a fire..
Love that song Bing…
Oh my gosh Bev! How did you know??? I was thinking, “ick! That is pretty disgusting” as I watched! Hahaha!
This made me smile! I love how perceptive you are to Laura’s heart, Bev! 😉
Now that’s insight from a true Nebraskan! When Kathy Troccoli and I were using song titles or our book “Falling in Love with Jesus” I wanted to use “He Owns The Cattle on a Thousand Hills” and she insisted only Nebraskans would know that song. 🙂
Sunday
1. How did you experience the goodness of the Lord this last week? I have been struggling with my health for years now and working with doctors, nutritionists, functional medicine, etc. trying to find some relief from the troubling symptoms I experience. It’s not life threatening, but affects my daily life in a big way. I have recently been feeling like I need to find contentment where I’m at, regardless of the symptoms. I am sad that my abilities are limited but need to be thankful for what I am able to do and look to the Lord for his grace each day. 2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Even as I sent a message to my nurse practitioner about this in response to further tests she wanted to run, our pastor was preparing a message for this Sunday which was on Psalm 42. In his message he shared about a struggle this winter that did not let up despite all the “right” things he was doing to alleviate this problem. He finally came to the point where he felt his desire to be rid of his problem was becoming an idol and said a prayer something like, Lord, I will carry this as long as you want me to, but I want you first and ahead of a cure for this struggle. I guess that’s where I’m at, as hard as it is to actually say it out loud.
2. Do you have any thoughts on the direction we are headed or any prayers to offer?
I love that we are studying what it looks like to be a Christian- to walk the narrow path and to chew on scripture. My prayer is that we are able to be honest and continue the study without distraction. The community support offered here is wonderful and we need this in our walk. I started out last week and got busy and fell away the end of the week. Praying I can fit this in the whole summer. Praying for Dee to have insights she needs for the study and the website to keep working.
So hard to have ongoing health struggles, Chris. I pray that you can have them resolved. Thank you for sharing this and for your pastor’s prayer words. So true of all of us. I, too, want Him first, ahead of the cure, but it is hard to say that out loud. I join you in this prayer for Dee: Praying for Dee to have insights she needs for the study and the website to keep working.
Thank you, Patti
Chris, I am thankful to God for His care for you through the hardship you are encountering right now. Isn’t it just like him to confirm in your heart what He is doing through a message by your pastor? And you know, I should pray the same for myself, not allow 2 difficult things right now to be my idol, rather, to want Jesus first, ahead of relief from them. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, like you, I love the community support here. Here is a Scripture blessing for you: To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ. Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.
Beautiful blessing, thank you.
Chris, I am sad to hear of your health issues. Your pastor has blessed me tonight with his words. How true. Jesus above all. Evil is pushing in on me and my husband. I will remind myself that I need Jesus first. Thank you and prayers for your situation.
Oh Chris — such health struggles. I know it presses you closer to Him but I also pray for relief. Thank you so for your prayers.
Chris, I join the others in praying for you. Health issues can be so frustrating and ongoing. May God give you His healing.
1. How did you experience the goodness of the Lord this last week?
I have been doing ANN V.’s One Thousand Gifts for a few years now. I relish looking at my entries, and it is true that it has changed me. There is nothing like an attitude of gratitude to change my perspective. This song, “Gratitude” by Brandon Lake, is perfect.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQdfs5S6jyA&list=RDdQdfs5S6jyA&start_radio=1
Most of the lyrics
All my words fall short, I got nothing new. How could I express all my gratitude?
I could sing these songs As I often do But every song must end, And You never do
So I throw up my hands And praise You again and again
‘Cause all that I have is a hallelujah Hallelujah
And I know it’s not much but I’ve nothing else fit for a King
Except for a heart singing hallelujah, Hallelujah.
2. Do you have any thoughts on the direction we are headed or any prayers to offer?
My Scripture writing schedule for the month of June is “JOY”. The verse for the day focuses on joy, and it is good to have the writing practice to ruminate/chew on the topic and what we do here reinforces in my heart what true joy is.
It often seems like what we study here is exactly what I need. I pray the Lord to guide you, Dee, on how to continue after our summer study. I have noticed that Paige and her church are doing an in-house one only, so she is not an option. I do love what we are doing now on joy.
I’m so curious-what is your scripture writing?
Chris, I follow the Homespun Wife (she is a pastor’s wife as well) Scripture writing schedule every month on FB. The Homespun Scripture Writing is an offshoot of her original page. Next month is Freedom in Christ. She is on YouTube. She encourages us to write the Scripture for the day, decorate and share it as we’d like. There are some beautiful entries. I am trying my hand at calligraphy and had fun doing it. I am learning not to focus on the art but to reflect on the assigned verse. She uses notebook paper and a binder. I use just an ordinary notebook. I love the simplicity of it. Last month’s was on spiritual warfare. I summarized the 31 days and was struck by the many ways we are at war with the enemy and how God has provided what we need to be prepared. I hope to summarize June on JOY.
Sounds great!
Love that song, Bing — and thank You for your encouragement!
Oh Bing I put in my ear buds and just listened to that song by Brandon Lake. I didn’t watch the video. Just listened. What a beautiful sound. Thank you for sharing it. I was blessed. 💕
What a great song Bing. One of my favorites and a great reminder that God never ends.
1. How did you experience the goodness of the Lord this last week?
I have had many praying for me and our family this past week. It is encouraging.
2. Do you have any thoughts on the direction we are headed or any prayers to offer?
I have thought that being joyful all the time isn’t really realistic. We have pain in our lives and I wonder how to be joyful through that pain. I don’t want to appear to be a “Pollyanna” OR like how Alisa Childers paints a picture of the progressive Christian…Always thinking that being a believer means all good things will come to me. I want to be authentic. I’ve even thought (jokingly) that a joyful Christian is an oxymoron like jumbo shrimp. Okay, I get it! We need to reflect our Lord and His character to those around us, but seriously, it’s difficult to be joyful when life is pounding around us! I look back at some of the families in the Bible (OT) and see how odd and dysfunctional some were. Cain and Able come to mind. Joseph and his brothers as well. My family is right up there with them, I fear. I suppose contemplating their situations helps me realize that God is indeed in charge and I am not. Oh God! Help my disbelief.
I love your authenticity, Laura! I think expressing our pain and hurts is a good thing. I agree, it is hard to be joyful when we are being pounded. I have been praying for you a lot and I pray that the Lord will resolve the nightmare you have been dealing with. I love that you still have your sense of humor. I love this:
“I’ve even thought (jokingly) that a joyful Christian is an oxymoron like jumbo shrimp.”
Jumbo Shrimp!
I like Philip’s paraphrase “We know sorrow but our joy is inextinguishable.” Your sorrow is real, but you are here for the enemy has not extinguished your hope.
Dear Laura, I can relate to your struggle and I love your authenticity. I often wear a mask and say everything is fine, when really my circumstances are not fine at all. Life is falling apart in so many ways, and yet, this is the distinction (which I often need to remind myself of…)-as Christian’s our joy is found in our relationship with the Lord. We have confidence in our salvation and knowing that in his sovereignty, he holds all our circumstances in his loving hands. Even while Joseph was in the pit at the hands of his brothers, he had his relationship with the Lord to fall back on. In James we are told to count it all joy when we suffer trials. That is hard to do! If only we could see the end of the story, like we do with Joseph’s life. But trusting God with each heart wrenching step is so hard. I think a good balance is to acknowledge the difficult circumstances and look for ways to trust God in them. I know a lady who when faced with cancer was excited to see who she could reach at her treatments with a little prayer booklet that might help them be encouraged or find salvation. Now that is counting it all joy. I’m sure that many see your faith in your trial. I’m praying for you! Hang in there. And thank you for your prayers for my situation. 🤍
Laura, Praying about tomorrow. Another court date right?
Yep. Boy oh boy, not looking forward to it either. Our daughter has no lawyer so she and her husband get to question us. Ugh. How humiliating it could be.
I, too, am continuing to pray for your court date, Laura
4 “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
Without distractions we can cling to God. He will fulfill our deepest need and we will be at peace and finally happy.
C. 5 “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.
He made me who I am. He makes us exactly who He wants us to be for His glory. When I accept this then I will be happy with my life.
D. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
Knowing God means spending time in the Word. By knowing Him and His ways, true happiness follows. This is justice in a positive manner. I am blessed when I know everything about His desires for us.
Love your answer to D. Laura. Spending time in His Word!
1. How did you experience the goodness of the Lord this last week?
I have found joy in letting go. I have been clinging to hopes of the way I would love to see healing in my family and I know that my ways are not the Lord’s ways. I have completely released my troubled adult child (in my heart of hope) and given him back to the Lord completely. I pray for him still, yet I pray much more for the Lord’s perfect will in this, for only God knows the way of healing. Not my will but Your will Father. Only You have the perfect solution. I am also letting go of my loneliness.
2. Do you have any thoughts on the direction we are headed or any prayers to offer?
I love the direction we are headed. There is so much love, faith and trust within this wonderful blog. I know we each have very specific challenges in our lives, yet I see the joy of the Lord in every heart, even through the pain, and health and family issues. I love the prayer support we have for one another, the encouragement and the open hearts. Praying for you, dear Dee, in this direction of the Joyous Christian! Thank you, Bing, for inspiring me to pull 0ut my One Thousand Gifts book and continue my list. I love the animal pics! They make me smile!
I pray with you for this child.
I too pray for your son. 🙏🏻
Oh Patti, I’m doing the same thing right now for my oldest. My thoughts and plans could and most likely would mess up God’s plan for him. I will be praying for your son along with mine.
Thank you, Julie. I will pray for your son, too.

Your turn:
B. 4 “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
When I lost my husband, the bottom fell out of my entire world; I pressed into God, deeply. I have prayed the 23 Psalm and a number of scriptures over and over, until I could truly see my Shepherd. I sensed Him with me, from the moment my husband went home to Jesus, and I felt Him through every moment, even when I thought I could not breathe. I still have to work at finding purpose in life and I still have times of such loneliness, yet I know Jesus is with me.
When I was at the very bottom of the sea, You reached down and guided me; I held Your hand and You brought me to the light.
C. 5 “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.
I know the way to find joy in the life I live, is on the path You choose for me Lord. Please continue to plan my days, to use this cracked vessel for Your glory in any small way.
D. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever
Lord, give me the desire to seek You first and above all in my life, for You alone can satisfy my soul.
Great paraphrases.
Monday: Happy Souls and The Lord
A. Verse 3 NLT
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”
—Happiness of heart comes to me when I have an attitude and mindset that that understands how much I need Jesus and that I am part of and have all the resources of God’s Kingdom.
B. Verse 4 NLT
“God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
—I will find I can have happiness of heart even when dealing with great loss because I find comfort and consolation from my God.
C. Verse 5 NLT
“God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.”
—Happiness is found in my soul when I set aside my demands for any of my own needs and put others first seeking their good. That’s when I find I have unlimited resources from God for my own hearts needs.
D. Verse 6
“God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.”
—God will satisfy my heart with happiness in the deep longing I have for life to be made right.
Love this, Bev: Happiness is found in my soul when I set aside my demands for any of my own needs and put others first seeking their good. That’s when I find I have unlimited resources from God for my own hearts needs.

B. 4 “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
NIV Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
When I am grieving and my heart is broken, it is an opportunity to lean in closer to you, O Lord. Your loving arms will encircle me, and I will feel safe and secure. I can stay there forever, through the sorrow and grief, out of them, and in again when tears threaten to come. Unannounced, they can be, let the clarion call of your voice speak to my heart. Let my sorrow be a to seek you, O God of all comforts.
C. 5 “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.
NIV Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth.
I am loved by the One who owns everything; therefore, there is no need that I can have that will not be provided for. Like a weaned child with its mother is my soul within me. Lord, that I may rest CONTENT in you.
D. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
NIV Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.
Let me not stop seeking you until my longing for what my body, soul, and spirit need is not quenched by you alone, O God. You are the source of everything I need for life. When the world is full of strife and the enemy seems to get the upper hand, remind me that you alone can bring the righteousness that I seek.
So many good things from Bing: I liked this: Let my sorrow be a to seek you, O God of all comforts.
Love this all, Bing. I especially love your answer to D. He truly is the source of everything we need!
Yes your answer to D. Blessed me too. 💕
4. We are to chew on Scripture like a cow chews its cud. Find out what you can about cows chewing their cud and how you might apply it.
From USdairy.com:
“…comfortable, relaxed and eating a good diet with a sufficient amount of long fiber.”
The cow shows comfort, is relaxed, and healthy.
Chewing on scripture is thought-provoking. It comforts and relaxes because it helps us understand life better and relate to others in a more healthy manner. Scripture teaches us how to live life well. Reading my Bible daily, using devotional plans, and discussing the Bible with others is a good way to chew on scripture.
Verse 3 refers to those who are poor. I believe I have learned that they are “poor” in spirit. So to know that the Bible can feed the spirit is helpful and can be joyful as well. When we are walking the straight path there is joy in our lives.
Have you experienced this? If so, be specific.
Yes. I know I am happier when I live as God wants me to live. Our grand-daughter is struggling with our situation. She is very grumpy a lot. It shows me that when we focus inwardly we are saddened. When we make our focus others, we are living as God wants us to live and that makes us happy.
B. How have you experienced the truth of verse 4, as paraphrased in The Message? Be specific.
Well, a couple of our children are lost. It’s unfortunate for sure. In one case though, the beauty comes from the grands we have. We need to pray about the second case.
C. Where is an area where you are growing in contentment circumstantially? Be specific.
I am growing in contentment that I can’t change people. I have to live with them being who they are and be okay with that.
D. What do your habits during the day reveal about the depth of your hunger for God? Think not only about your morning quiet time, but what you read, watch, listen to…
I spend at least some time in the morning in Bible study. I have a constant dialog with God during the day (some people probably think I am crazy). I listen to Christian music at times, and I really don’t watch too much in the way of TV anymore. We gave up cable TV years ago so it isn’t available. I do watch a commentator I believe is non biased (I sometimes want to throw something at him, hahaha). So, I’m doing pretty well, I think. I also do need to know the state of the union/world though. Otherwise I’m ignorant and I don’t think that is good. But…the world is a painful place.
Here’s a link to the journalist I trust:

Hey Laura, In years past Fox news channel was part of my regular TV watching in the early days of Bill O’ Reilly along with the other commentators of that time but I dropped off a few years ago from watching most of it and told my husband if anything major happens in the world please let me know 😀 The voices got way to noisy and argumentative for me. Made me want to throw things at them. 😁. I try to read enough to stay informed on daily current events but only sparingly.
Ha, Laura, I used the same website. How funny, roomies from a while back, think the same LOL. I also thought the same when I watched the cow chewing LOL LOL
Loved this from Laura who often has a unique take!
From USdairy.com: “…comfortable, relaxed and eating a good diet with a sufficient amount of long fiber.” The cow shows comfort, is relaxed, and healthy. Chewing on scripture is thought-provoking. Monday – my paraphrase
B. 4 “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
I mourn the times in my life when I have neglected, ignored, or forgotten You. You are the faithful one, not me. Lord, You wait with open arms to hold me as I turn to you with tears of repentance. Truly this is a blessing.
C. 5 “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.
There is real joy and peace when I am humble and content with myself. I am “complete in Thee, O Blessed thought.” You have given me an inheritance beyond all the treasure that the earth offers.
D. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
Seeking You and pursuing You, Lord, is name of the game. When I have caught up to you, joy, peace, and satisfaction are my reward.
I never really thought about the beatitudes as promises before, but now I see that they are. The Lord is promising to give joy and peace in each one.
“Seeking You and pursuing You, Lord, is name of the game. When I have caught up to you, joy, peace, and satisfaction are my reward.”
Good thought Cheryl. I agree 💕
Lovely paraphrases, filled with truth, Cheryl. Love “seeking Him and pursuing Him”.
Tuesday: Chew, Chew, Chew
4. We are to chew on Scripture like a cow chews its cud. Find out what you can about cows chewing their cud and how you might apply it.
—Cows chewing their cud is a vast subject of science. We have a nephew who has his doctorate on this very subject. He is a specialist concerning the rumination of cattle and what they eat. So needless to say it is actually a very involved topic and important to the industry of raising cattle.
Here is a statement I found that sums up the purpose of cows chewing their cud.
“Cows chew their food twice as part of a sophisticated digestive process that maximizes nutrient extraction from fibrous plant materials. This process, known as rumination, involves initial ingestion, microbial fermentation, regurgitation, and re-chewing of the cud, followed by further digestion and absorption. The practice is essential for maintaining digestive health, optimizing feed efficiency, and supporting the cow’s overall well-being.”
To apply this last sentence to our spiritual health it speaks to our need to “ruminate” on the Word of God and that is a practice that is essential for us to maintain spiritual health and optimize the efficiency of the words of the Scripture which supports our overall wellbeing spiritually.
6. Again, look at Matthew 5:3-6. We’re going to chew!
A. The ironic thing about Christianity, says Tim Keller, is that sorrow can lead to greater joy. Why might that be, according to verse 3? Have you experienced this? If so, be specific.
—The NLT says “those who are poor and realize their need for Him”. I think the key is to recognize and feel the need for God. We can wallow in our misery being self focused or we can realize we need Jesus with us in our misery. As we experience His presence with us we find our heart’s needs are met by Him and his presence blesses us. He is the only true source of peace and joy.
When I have been tempted to worry about situations like my son going to India while the country was at war a few weeks ago I had to spend time in prayer and the bible and take hold of the promises of God. He calmed my heart. And now I have two grandsons on a youth missions trip to an inner city place that is drug infested and dangerous. So again I am challenged to trust God and find peace for my heart and joy in what they feel called to be part of.
B. How have you experienced the truth of verse 4, as paraphrased in The Message? Be specific.
—When my Mom died I found joy in the reality that she was with Jesus. I felt the loss of not having her here with us any longer but it was deeply precious to me that she was with Him because I experienced his closeness to me and because of Him we will be reunited. He embraced me. It really is all about Jesus.
C. Where is an area where you are growing in contentment circumstantially? Be specific.
—I have now reached old age and feel the physical effects of it. Other than the pains of arthritis you don’t want to know the details. There are no real cures or fixes at this age for the body. My circumstances physically are not going to reverse themselves. But in spite of that I find great contentment in my relationship with Jesus. He satisfies the real needs of my heart. My life is still rich because of Him. I more and more let go of the material world. He is the one absolute surety in this life because He is eternal life. He is my contentment.
D. What do your habits during the day reveal about the depth of your hunger for God? Think not only about your morning quiet time, but what you read, watch, listen to…
—At this point in life much has dropped off my past list. I engage in very little secular related activity. I find much it to be such a waste of time. Perhaps because time is short and I want to keep my focus as much as possible on Jesus and his place in my life. All the good gifts I have are from Him. He is truly where I find joy.
Great from your nephew on why to chew twice!
Your turn: When there is no where else to turn, turn to God. He is never changing and his reward is great.
B. 4 “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
When all seems lost, there is still God. He will always comfort you.
C. S “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.
Contentment in God gives us everything we have ever strived for, if we only stop striving. D. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
We are blessed when we seek to please the Lord, for then we will be finally satisfied.
4. We are to chew on Scripture like a cow chews its cud. Find out what you can about cows chewing their cud and how you might apply it.
We own cattle and whenever there has been concern over health, one thing we look for is chewing the cud. A cow chewing is not in distress. Things are working as they should. Chewing the cud adds saliva to the food and helps aid in digestion.
Oh, well, yes. Unfortunately, the hard things we go through are for our betterment. Without them we might stray too far from the Lord and that would be much worse than enduring the trial. The greater joy is our better relationship with the Lord and people in the end. The sorrowful trial is not fun, but necessary.
B. How have you experienced the truth of verse 4, as paraphrased in The Message? Be specific. Gee. What to share? There are so many and I’m enduring the loss of another now. The easiest one to share is probably when my family was in a horrific car crash when I was 10 years old. So much of what I knew as dear to me then was lost, and yet God changed the trajectory of our family from being centered on the world to being centered on him.
C. Where is an area where you are growing in contentment circumstantially? Be specific. Well, I’m trying to grow in contentment with my health circumstances or rather the lack of it.
D. What do your habits during the day reveal about the depth of your hunger for God? Think not only about your morning quiet time, but what you read, watch, listen to…. I listen to Christian radio every day and other sermons there. I lead our son in devotions and try to keep active with the grandkids, gardening, and my labradors. I don’t watch much on television. My spirit is too sensitive to much of what’s on tv. If I am on the internet, it’s usually bible study or something for homeschooling or dogs.
This made me smile:
If I am on the internet, it’s usually bible study or something for homeschooling or dogs.
I love your compassionate and contented heart, Chris.
Sunday: Thankful Christians
1. How did you experience the goodness of the Lord this last week? – My very good friend from Indiana came in for a long weekend. We talked and talked and talked about all kinds of things. She rebuked me in love and on Sunday at church, the sermon backed up our conversations. I love how God shows up in our lives in the most surprising way. It was like he had a camera on us and heard what we were saying, just to confirm and say, ‘yes, I’m listening’
2. Do you have any thoughts on the direction we are headed or any prayers to offer? – I love all the studies we do and love your obedient heart to the Lord, Dee. I’m excited to be a part of this next study that you are creating. Lord, continue to be with Dee and all of these wonderful friends here on this blog. Provide Dee with the wisdom she is seeking to know how to lead us to the next study. Provide her with all that you want her to teach us and provide us with open hearts and minds that we can grasp and understand what you are saying through Dee. In your mighty name I pray Jesus, amen.
Monday: Happy Souls and The Lord
– When I’ve given up everything that is precious to me, then and only then is when I will feel the arms of Jesus around me.
C. 5 “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought. – When I can see that God has placed me right where I’m to be with just what I have, I can know that I have what the world is looking for, Jesus.
D. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat. – When I feed on the goodness of God and His Word, I have the meal that will sustain me into eternity.
Tuesday: Chew, Chew, Chew
4. We are to chew on Scripture like a cow chews its cud. Find out what you can about cows chewing their cud and how you might apply it. – This is from the http://www.usdairy.com website…”According to dairy cow nutritionist Mary Beth de Ondarza, when a cow is chewing her cud, that’s a good sign. It means that she is comfortable, relaxed and eating a good diet with a sufficient amount of long fiber.Chewing cud produces saliva which is important for controlling rumen acidity. Too much acid hinders the growth and function of the rumen bacteria, especially those that digest fiber.” …I can see that when we are chewing on the Word of God we are at peace, we are comfortable and relaxed. The Word is like our good diet that will stay with us a long time like fiber is supposed to do. I relate the acidity to evil or worldly things. And when we look at too much of these things, we will not grow in our relationship with Jesus. These worldly things will block our lives from functioning as Christlike beings.
– We all grow at different speeds, we are not all in the same spot as Christians. But the main thing that we should all be doing is thriving and flourishing. We should all, no matter where we are in our walk, be walking toward Jesus, His Word and His Truth. Our walk needs to be organic and most likely will not match someone else’s walk. We are responsible for our walk and no one else’s but we should be eager to present the Gospel to them so their walk can start, or in some cases continue toward Jesus.
6. Again, look at Matthew 5:3-6. We’re going to chew!
A. The ironic thing about Christianity, says Tim Keller, is that sorrow can lead to greater joy. Why might that be, according to verse 3? Have you experienced this? If so, be specific. – For me, I didn’t know what true joy was until the sorrow came. I thought I was happy, but once I had sorrow in my trials, (my financial struggles as a single mom), I saw the true joy that can only come from Jesus. It’s that unexplainable joy that others can’t understand when they see me struggling and ask how can you be happy. It’s this joy that will help get me through the next trial. True joy lasts a lifetime, no matter what we may lose in this world we will never lose the joy of the Lord.
B. How have you experienced the truth of verse 4, as paraphrased in The Message? Be specific. – If I don’t mourn or release all that is precious to me, I can’t grab on to God’s hand because I’m holding on to all my worldly pleasures. My hands need to be free in order for me to reach out and grab on to Jesus. Once I release my burdens to Him, he will take care of them all and in return, I can be closer to him because the baggage in between us is gone.
C. Where is an area where you are growing in contentment circumstantially? Be specific. – The timing of this study and me doing it today has been huge blessing. I’m struggling, right now, but growing and releasing my son Kyle back to the Lord. It’s hard being his mom and seeing him at his limit in all areas of his life and know that he would rather be dead right now than alive. I’ve reached out to a friend who knows Kyle and has provided me with the contact information of a doctor that Kyle saw in the past. Now I wait and I’m asking God to open up the doors to this doctor to see Kyle and for Kyle to be open to getting the help he needs. I’ve got be content with me being in Tennessee and nine hours away so God can work without me getting in the way of His plan for Kyle.
D. What do your habits during the day reveal about the depth of your hunger for God? Think not only about your morning quiet time, but what you read, watch, listen to…My day starts with devotionals as I’m getting ready and my first cup of coffee is when I do this blog most days and then work on my current bible study lesson. Throughout the day, I’m reading the comments from the devotionals and trying, though I haven’t perfected it yet, to come back into this blog and read the comments. I pray as thoughts or concerns come in to my mind and talk to God as I need to. I don’t watch much TV at all but like to listen to podcasts that will go deeper into the Word, but my daily routine is different because of the other obligations that come up. I do try and keep my eyes on Jesus though. When time permits, I sit on my back porch and listen to the birds chirp and admire the handiwork of God that is around me. I love my back porch, it’s so peaceful.
You do have such a challenge with Kyle. Oh Father, bring light to His eyes, sense to his soul, and hope!
I love your entire post, Julie. This is so good: True joy lasts a lifetime, no matter what we may lose in this world we will never lose the joy of the Lord.I will pray for your Kyle.
Julie, praying for your Kyle. May he find the help he needs for what he is facing right now.
Julie, I pray God will comfort your mother’s heart for Kyle. And work in Kyle’s life for good. 💕
HAPPY
4. We are to chew on Scripture like a cow chews its cud. Find out what you can about cows chewing their cud and how you might apply it.
I think Laura’s answer was perfect!🥰 The more I ruminate on God’s Word, the more it stays in my heart and becomes part of me, as a Christian. If I just scan over a verse or a Psalm, it made fade from my mind….and I lose part of the meaning, Memorizing and reading through scripture over and over, brings it to life.
I love the wisdom of Tim Keller. I see so much truth in these words: Christianity is organic, rather than mechanical. God’s Word is like living water to our souls. The more Living water in my soul, the more I see, feel and desire His hand on my life. In my devotion for today (Tim and Kathy Keller: The Songs of Jesus), is this:”All human talent, wisdom and success are only gifts from Him. He is in control of everything that happens in history…even the most powerful end up only fulfilling God’s purposes……we should not arrogantly think we are competent to run our own lives. We are not.” Ruminate on His Word!
6. Again, look at Matthew 5:3-6. We’re going to chew!
A. The ironic thing about Christianity, says Tim Keller, is that sorrow can lead to greater joy. Why might that be, according to verse 3? Have you experienced this? If so, be specific.
When we have deep sorrow, we are not complacent and satisfied with life. We are devastated with our outward circumstances and our souls ache. The only remedy, is turning to God, who gives us His perspective, which can bring us greater joy~ joy from the inside, joy in our souls, joy from His Word, regardless of circumstances. Yes, when I am lonely, I turn to God’s Word and He changes the direction of my thoughts.
B. How have you experienced the truth of verse 4, as paraphrased in The Message? Be specific.
Having a consistent routine if reading God’s Word, and listening to Christian music, gives me comfort.
C. Where is an area where you are growing in contentment circumstantially? Be specific.
I live alone now and I have never lived alone in my life. Reading the Bible first thing in the morning, doing this study, being involved in Christian activities and contributing to those in need, through church, have helped me to focus on others (rather than self).I am becoming more content with what God has for me to do, one day at a time. I love spending time with my grown children and grandchildren, whenever I see them!
D. What do your habits during the day reveal about the depth of your hunger for God? Think not only about your morning quiet time, but what you read, watch, listen to…
I am not a big fan of TV but I do like to hear good sermons, so I listen to Tim Keller, James Tour, Stephen Meyer, Christian Music, and I listen to Amir Tsarfati, who is Jewish Christian, in Israel. His perspective on world news is always Bible focused.
Patti, I love your answer to 6 A, especially this: “Yes, when I am lonely, I turn to God’s Word and He changes the direction of my thoughts.”
Patti, I so appreciate your answers and your applications. I too follow Amir Tsarfati.
I’ll have to check out Amir Tsarfati. Last night a friend and I watched David Platte close out The Gospel Coalition conference. You can find him on you-tube. Powerful.
Thank you, Dee!
Is this the sermon on Ephesians 6~ Just listened to it and going to listen again right now! SO Powerful is right!! Wow!
Tuesday chew, chew, chew
4. We are to chew on Scripture like a cow chews its cud. Find out what you can about cows chewing their cud and how you might apply it.
Cud is digested food that is returned from the stomach of the animal, for a second round of chewing. (Yuck, and double yuck.) These animals that chew cud make sure they get as many of the nutrients out of their food as possible, before it passes out of the rumen into the rest of their digestive tract.
Ruminating (chewing) on scripture helps me absorb meaning/application (nutrients). Fortunately it does not pass out of my system, and the Holy Spirit brings verses/passage to mind when needed (regurgitation for further chewing).
The poor in spirit was me before the Lord saved me. I lived a “good” life and had not real need of Him, I did not realize my spirit was starving. When He opened my eyes to the truth, and I finally saw Him in comparison to myself, Woe is me! That encounter led to salvation, a relationship with God, and joy and hope that are abundant.
B. How have you experienced the truth of verse 4, as paraphrased in The Message? Be specific. 4 “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. I think of 2 applications. #1 is salvation (letting go of sin and admitting the need of a Savior) as the above answer. #2 Grief at the loss of my daughter when she died. The comfort of the Lord, His embrace, was truly felt when I acknowledged my pain/loss and turned to Him.
C. Where is an area where you are growing in contentment circumstantially? Be specific. My physical limitations (hearing loss. speech impairment, worsening mobility, disappearing fine motor control, etc). The amount of time I get frustrated over these is less and less. I am thankful that I had children to mother before these issues were diagnosed. When I was working, they were always a pressing concern for me. I have learned to say “Yes, I can do that,” when I can, and “No,” when I can’t. The tricky part is to not say “No,” when the Lord directs me, in spite of my limitations.
D. What do your habits during the day reveal about the depth of your hunger for God? Think not only about your morning quiet time, but what you read, watch, listen to… I watch WAY too much TV and have seen a marked decrease in prayer time. Bible study is still a delight for me, and I can spend hours studying.
Health issues can be so hard to deal with, Cheryl. So thankful our Father is helping you with it.
What an amazing thought that you are less frustrated as health troubles increase. Only God!
I wanted to jump on and thank everyone for extended prayers on our grands situation. I am trying to be positive here… We got word early this morning that court would be postponed again. This is because our daughter asked for a continuance a couple of weeks ago, and the court waited until this morning, the day of to cancel. It is extremely frustrating to say the least. We had to find a babysitter, which we never have usually, and we had a few witnesses scheduled, including the pediatrician. His zoom call had to be okayed through their legal department. So once again, the court bows to our daughter and her whimsical wishes, while the rest of us scramble to make sure we do what’s right in the eyes of the court. I am beyond exhausted with this situation. I wonder if the judge realizes the pain he is continuing to instill on our family. I doubt it. This just gives Sarah more time to come up with nasty things to say about me and my husband. I have reminded myself that there were many dysfunctional families in the Old Testament and situations like Joseph can actually turn out for the good. I’m just so tired and want it to end. Thanks, again ♥️
I will continue to pray for this frustrating and painful situation, Laura. I know it has been so hard on you and your husband, and your grandkids.💕💕
Laura, I will continue to pray for you and your family in the face of these postponements. The Lord’s timing is always perfect, and I pray he will grant you His peace and the added grace you need during this time of waiting.
Oh, Laura! That is very frustrating to have the court hearing postponed again! I have another friend who is in a similar situation with their son, who is in divorce proceedings with his wife. My brain struggles to comprehend the intricacies of the legal system. Why does one party get the upper hand? I don’t want to add to your frustrations, so I must stop and pray rather than rant away for you. Love you, dear friend! His eye is on the sparrow, so I know God is watching over you.
Oh Laura, Like Bing I kind of want to just jump in here and rant a bit but also somehow I want to offer encouragement to you. I certainly don’t have any answers for this. I know we have to continue to trust the sovereignty of God and that in spite of your daughters ways that He’s still in control. I am praying some specifics where your daughter is concerned and will continue ask for God’s will to be done. And for your strength to stay the course of doing the right thing. It would seem verse 10 of these beatitudes was written for you at this time.
Prayers, Laura. Hang on. God knows and I love and join all the prayers above.
Oh how frustrating, Laura. The enemy is busy.
Father, I know You are greater than the prince of this world and ask that You show your self strong in this situation and give Laura and her husband Your supernatural peace. In Jesus Name
Oh Laura, I’m so sorry this is still dragging on. We have the same situation with our granddaughter, son and daughter-in-law. They are raising their grandson because of the mom being charged with neglect and abuse. The courts continue to drag it on, going on a 3-year continuance now. I try to remind my daughter-in-law that the longer it goes on the deeper our granddaughter is digging her hole. The longer it goes on the longer it shows that our great grandson does not have a bone deficiency, that it was out and out abuse. I will be praying for you and please try to remember that this will all be in God’s timing. The jury will see what they are doing, and justice will be served. Hugs my friend.
1. 3. We are to chew on Scripture like a cow chews its cud. Find out what you can about cows chewing their cud and how you might apply it.
Okay, you have to forgive my rabbit trailing here, or should I say, cow trailing? I remember teaching A and P using the Anatomy in Clay learning system, bringing to life the digestive system and comparing it to a cow’s stomach. Eeek…as Laura would say. LOL
(Yuk, Mrs. Boettner! Stop it. That is gross, etc., etc., as some of my students would say while others would sit there with wonder in their eyes-hey, what’s the difference?)
“Cows are ruminants, meaning they have a specialized digestive system with a four-chamber stomach that allows them to efficiently digest tough plant material like grass and hay. “
“There are 3 steps to rumination or chewing the cud: regurgitation, re-chewing, and re-swallowing.
…In essence, cud chewing is a vital part of the cow’s digestive system, allowing them to utilize fibrous plants that are difficult for other animals to digest, and ultimately promoting overall health and productivity.”
Science journals say cows can ruminate for 7 hours a day on average with some cows spending up to 10.5 hours. The entire digestion process, from initial ingestion to elimination, can take between one and three days.
For humans, it takes approximately 20 minutes from the time you start eating for your brain to send out signals of fullness. Leisurely eating allows ample time to trigger the signal from your brain that you are full. And feeling full translates into eating less. Rabbit trailing here again, but interesting/
Perhaps, I should spend time in God’s Word for a minimum of 20 minutes to experience the fullness of its message for me. I don’t want to sound legalistic here but it would be a useful tool for me when I spend time in the Word. I do find that longer periods of time with the Lord is so refreshing, I don’t even get hungry! When I am full with God, then I would be taking in less of what the world has to offer?
Bing your education makes you so interesting to read and I would bet to listen to as well. No wonder you are in a teaching role. 😊
Love your rabbit trails, Bing! What a great and creative teacher you are!
Amen!
“When I am full with God, then I would be taking in less of what the world has to offer?” I am thinking that is true, Bing. I’m going to take that as a help from the Holy Spirit to address my tv watching.
Appreciate the kind thoughts, sisters! Cheryl, you prompted me to think of my TV watching, too. I watched Enola Holmes 1 and 2 with too much excitement (hah!) I knew I could easily get sucked into surfing and spend my time away in front of a TV. Now that I am fully retired, I find that I have more “leisure time” and should be cognizant of how I number my days.
2. Again, look at Matthew 5:3-6. We’re going to chew!
A. The ironic thing about Christianity, says Tim Keller, is that sorrow can lead to greater joy. Why might that be, according to verse 3? Have you experienced this? If so, be specific.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
We are not of the world and its appetites but living the upside down kingdom of Jesus. When I acknowledge that I cannot do anything on my own, fully dependent on God do I live the happy life. Greater joy I have because it is not dependent on anything this world has to offer.
When my friend, Dolores, passed away recently, my grief was fleeting I almost felt guilty. But then, through tears, I can see her dancing to the arms of Jesus. (movie, The Scent of a Woman tango scene). Dolores liked to dance and I smiled at the thought of her in the arms of Jesus.
B. How have you experienced the truth of verse 4, as paraphrased in The Message? Be specific.
You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
When I decided to fully retire from teaching, I felt a sense of loss, a certain goodbye to my identity and source of significance for so many years. Moreover, like some of us here, I feel the challenges of getting older more acutely. Yet, I can be thankful for them as they point me to Christ and His sufficiency. It is a daily giving of myself to Jesus, who loves me through and through.
C. Where is an area where you are growing in contentment circumstantially? Be specific.
If I can use the phrase” holy discontentment” of what this world has to offer. Have you ever looked inside your closet and say, “I have nothing to wear?” and yet your closet is full of clothes? I wore the same dress to church the past 2 Sundays! Oh, boy, that was freeing! I have a 4 day convention to go to in September and I am thinking, “what clothes should I bring? Should I buy something new? ( nothing wrong with that). Again, I looked and saw a few outfits that can go together. And I tell myself, “what’s wrong with wearing what I already have?” And that thought was freeing again! And the thought of Jesus in the room with me brings a smile to my face. He does care about these things that concern me.
D. What do your habits during the day reveal about the depth of your hunger for God? Think not only about your morning quiet time, but what you read, watch, listen to…
Scripture Writing, Talking to Him and to my plants when I am in my garden, listening to Christian podcasts and musicians, listening to prayers on YouTube before going to bed, and before I rise, reading my Bible and “hearing” God speaking to me. Doing our study here and Bible Study with 2 of my friends. I sense His nearness more and more each day. This verse has taken more meaning to me acts 17:28 with the additional verses of 24-27 from The Message: The God who made the world and everything in it, this Master of sky and land, doesn’t live in custom-made shrines or need the human race to run errands for him, as if he couldn’t take care of himself. He makes the creatures; the creatures don’t make him. Starting from scratch, he made the entire human race and made the earth hospitable, with plenty of time and space for living so we could seek after God, and not just grope around in the dark but actually find him. He doesn’t play hide-and-seek with us. He’s not remote; he’s near. We live and move in him, can’t get away from him!
Bing I love your answer to C. 😊
and those verses from Acts 17 in the message are so good.
Amen to Bev! All of your answers are so good, Bing! Love how He helped with your wardrobe! I love this: He’s not remote; he’s near. We live and move in him, can’t get away from him!
Wednesday: Happy Souls and One Another
7. Using your own translation and The Message, do your own paraphrase. I’ve given an example for the first in red.
A.
—Verse 7
Happiness is found in practicing compassion to others who are in need of it. God makes sure compassion will be shown to those who practice it when they need it.
B.
—Verse 8
God makes happy a heart that is clean with right attitudes and habits. A clean heart has a clear vision of God’s righteous ways.
C.
—Verse 9
Happy is the person who seeks to bring peace into others lives. The work of bringing peace reveals they belong to God who is a God of peace.
D.
—Verse 10
God blesses the person who does the right thing even when it costs them to be rejected or makes their life hard. It establishes them solidly as part of God’s Kingdom.
Just a note that it is about 3:00 am here in Nebraska. I woke up at 1:00 am and just couldn’t go back to sleep so decided I needed to just get up and occupy my mind with some study. I will be taking a nap tomorrow 🥱😴
Wonderful thoughts, Bev. You are amazing at 3am. Hope you are able to nap today. 😉
Bev, that early morning wakefulness is a great invitation to spend time with the Father. I bet He was smiling!
Me too!!! I was up at 2:27-4:23! I did Bible study but I’m not sure it was here. I think it was You version. Still…so funny!
I can find true joy in the center of my being and see God in the world and the people around me, when the eyes of my heart seek Him and His will first in my life, and not my own desires.
C.9 “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family. When I reflect the character of our Heavenly Father and His will, in my interactions with others and my words to others, I will be living my life as a child of God.
D. “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.
When I defend my commitment to God in my thoughts, words and deeds, others may turn against me, laugh at me, persecute me, and it is then that God draws me closer to His heart.
You are all doing so well at chewing!

Happiness is when I have my priorities in order: God first and then others.
Jesus
Others
You (me)
When I seek God first, all others fall in their proper places.
C.9 “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.
Don’t play the comparison game. Be happy for others. Seek peace and not strife. That is how we show that we are from a particular family-the family of God. We inherit our Father’s traits.
D. “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.
I must never lose my focus on God when I encounter persecution because of my faith. Persecution should lead me to hang on to God because, in the end, He will take care of me. Who have in heaven but You, O God?
B.8 “You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.
We should strive to make our hearts pure. When that happens then we know the Lord.
C.9 “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.
Let’s try to promote peace in our lives. Everyone benefits from this!
D. “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.
Being persecuted is tough stuff, so clinging to God is vital. When we do so then we will be rewarded in the end.
D is so good for you, Laura — for I do feel the whole thing with your daughter is persecution fueled by the enemy. I just watched David Platt’s closing to the Gospel Coaltion conference on You-tube. So good about that.
Amen to the David Platt sermon. 💕

8. Think of a time when you found real joy in giving sacrificial love.
I remember sleepless nights taking care of our daughter as she learned how to nurse. I had her through C-section and was trying to recover from that and a skin infection on my incision site. Add the hormonal changes, and I was a basket case during those days. But I couldn’t trade the experience for anything. How can so much joy be felt amidst tears and mood swings? Motherhood has taught me so much about sacrificial love.
9. Nicky Gumble says of verse 7 is “A key step in being pure in heart is allowing others to see our brokenness.” How have you humbly done this and been surprised by joy?
When my husband gently corrects me and I don’t get defensive and acknowledge my human frailty, all becomes well in my soul. And I should do that on repeat, not only with him, but with others as well. It is a temptation to hide behind a façade of Christian strength when I am breaking inside.
10. Verse 9. Think of a situation where a brother is tearing another brother down, but you have endeavored to bring peace in some way. What have you done that has been helpful?
First, I need to empathize with my brother. Sometimes, a listening ear is all a brother needs, and with empathy, they can figure things out with God themselves without my help.
11. When people are mocking you or scorning you, how can the promise of this verse help overcome your pain?
God is in control, and He will take care of me. I belong to Him, and He will be my defense.
8. Think of a time when you found real joy in giving sacrificial love.
I usually don’t read comments before I have answered the questions because I feel like I’m “cheating.” I happened upon Bing’s response to this question and totally agree that the child birthing/feeding process takes the cake for this answer! Wow.
In every day life though, there are small things done that feel like a miniature version of this. Even picking up something someone drops is a kind act that could be considered “sacrificial” I suppose. It does give me a warmness inside. I was just thinking of this yesterday and wondering about it. I’m not sure why though 🤷🏻♀️
I’m thinking that our situation is sacrificial love right now. We certainly are derailed from our original plans for the rest of our lives. I am handling it, but I will say I’m not always happy in giving this love. Child birthing and nursing aren’t always happily given either, I suppose.
9. Nicky Gumble says of verse 7 is “A key step in being pure in heart is allowing others to see our brokenness.” How have you humbly done this and been surprised by joy?
Our church family has come around us to pray and be there for us. It is a beautiful thing. We have asked at times for prayer, but there are many who are actively involved now.
10. Verse 9. Think of a situation where a brother is tearing another brother down, but you have endeavored to bring peace in some way. What have you done that has been helpful?
I separate the two and speak to each individually. Or, as has recently happened in our church, I try to use scripture to remind the parties that we are the church and the church should work together on a problem to try to solve it. When the church members don’t know about the issue, how can they react to help solve it? We have had some leave recently, who disagree with how things are being run, but those not directly involved are unaware of what’s going on. Those who are involved are being too quiet and just walking away instead of standing up and allowing the church body to help. I get so frustrated with people who just walk away from a church with no explanation when the church body is the church! Not the pastor! If there is a problem then we should all help try to solve it 🤷🏻♀️
11. When people are mocking you or scorning you, how can the promise of this verse help overcome your pain?
Jesus was marked and scorned. If I am a child of God, as He is, then I will also be mocked and scorned. I think of Corrie Ten-Boom. She walked naked in the dark for roll call (3 am) and thought about Jesus carrying His cross, naked. Yes. Lord help us when we are mocked and scorned.
Thursday: Chew, Chew, Chew
I want to make a comment here. As I previewed and considered answers for the following questions I felt a bit overwhelmed because each one requires a deeply personal answer that requires thought. No easy answers here. Each of these questions have struck a cord emotionally and I will just start by answering only one for now.
8. Think of a time when you found real joy in giving sacrificial love.
—In the recent years I have been part of helping care for my 11 year old granddaughter who has spina bifida. Her daily bathroom needs have required a “potty time” in the morning and regular catheterization through out the day and extra preparation at bedtime. Let’s just say it takes time and it can be messy. Outside of my son and daughter-in-law I have been the only other hands on caregiver in this regard. In those times of needing to daily give her care and sit by her to administer her needs I have found joy in this little girl who has been quite matter of fact about life. She is now reaching a point where she is being trained and is using a disposable catheter bag which is helping bring her towards some independence to meet her most basic needs. Without going into more detail of what it takes to meet these needs it is important for me to say please, please do not praise me for the help I have given or it will miss the point of the sacrifice of my time and energy to help. Where I have given respite care as needed to help out in my love for family if anyone deserves praise it is Aerilyn’s parents for the 24/7 hands on loving care they give their daughter. They sacrifice regularly but this girl has brought us all real joy in the way God has made her. And we consider her a gift to our family not because we are noble but because we have all learned much by having her in our lives.
Having gone back and reading Bing and Laura ‘s answers I think I just tend to overthink some of my responses to questions. 🥴😊
Bev, I love your thoughtful answers. They demonstrate the sacrifice of love.
Okay — no praise for you! But amazing parents!

B.8 “You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world. – When your mind is on Christ and the things of Christ, you are moving in the right direction to see God in all things that are in the world.
C.9 “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family. – The blessings of God are love and peace, show that love to others so they can have the unimaginable peace we have. When we do this, others will become more important to us than our own gain. We will have found our place in God’s family.
D. “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom. – Though we may be persecuted by the world for standing up for God’s Word, we will receive the blessing of God that will bring us so much closer to His kingdom.
Thursday: Chew, Chew, Chew
8. Think of a time when you found real joy in giving sacrificial love. – My mom had to have an emergency appendectomy on the fourth of July holiday and my older sister, who she lived with at the time, was in Florida transitioning to full time living there. My other sister made no attempt to step in and help out, so I packed a bag, (I was an hour and fifteen minutes away) and went to help her. I stayed at the hospital day and night with her while she was in there in case she needed anything or needed clarification on what was being said. She was 85 I believe at the time. The joy that came was seeing the beauty all around me with the different town’s fireworks going off. Knowing my mom needed someone to help her wasn’t a huge issue for me, she took care of me so much when I needed it, so I wanted to help her. The conversations we had while she was healing was a joy to me as well. God knows what we need at all times and where the joy will come is all up to His plan, but we need to have our eyes open to find the joy and not the burden of helping someone.
9. Nicky Gumble says of verse 7 is “A key step in being pure in heart is allowing others to see our brokenness.” How have you humbly done this and been surprised by joy? – Most recently I showed others my brokenness by talking about my son Kyle and the struggles he’s having. My humbleness to reach out and ask for prayer from so many of you and others in my circle has brought the joy of seeing a totally different text vide come across from Kyle the very next morning. He now would like to come out to Tennessee and try and get off the pain meds but doesn’t want to do it alone. God’s hand is all over my son right now and it’s because of all of you praying. My surprised joy was that early morning text with a new outlook. Thank you all for your abundance of prayers.
10. Verse 9. Think of a situation where a brother is tearing another brother down, but you have endeavored to bring peace in some way. What have you done that has been helpful? – Hmm, this isn’t brother to brother in the faith, but it between my husband, a believer, and his oldest son, a non-believer. When our son calls, he usually calls me to talk, but once in a while will ask to talk to his dad so I hand him the phone. They just can’t seem to talk about things that don’t cause conflict and the conversations don’t last very long. I try to tell my husband, that is your son, maybe you need to reach out to him more and just let him talk without always trying to correct him. He just wants to talk. They are both so much alike in their stubbornness it’s like chiseling through a mountain. I think it helps a little because the conversations last a bit longer sometimes. God be with them both and soften their hearts to hear each other in the way you want them to listen.
11. When people are mocking you or scorning you, how can the promise of this verse help overcome your pain? – Knowing that God will be with me and provide the peace I need, the joy I need if I can find it in myself to not argue back or try to defend myself to someone who may not listen, is such a huge blessing. I need to just remind myself that it is God who matters, and he promises me peace and a life of eternity with Him.
I love this, Bing: I need to just remind myself that it is God who matters, and he promises me peace and a life of eternity with Him.
Sorry, Julie… I am an airhead! Great post!
Julie, Such good answers to how God has worked on your behalf and how He continues to do so in your life situations and how you trust Him and his promises for the future.
8. Think of a time when you found real joy in giving sacrificial love.
When we got custody of my husband’s children. They were 3 years old and 5 years old. I was terrified, but I was so grateful for them. It has been a wild ride, but I am forever grateful for them and for the support of the Lord. He is my rock.
9. Nicky Gumble says of verse 7 is “A key step in being pure in heart is allowing others to see our brokenness.” How have you humbly done this and been surprised by joy?
As I age, I realize how easily my brokenness and fragility, become more apparent. I am so grateful for those who help me over the speed bumps in life. I have a young man, who helps me with cardio, weights and other training; a young dance instructor, who is a great teacher and does not laugh at me, but we laugh together! 😉And a pottery teacher, who is kind and thoughful. I thank God for their grace! (And I tell them how special they are to me and how kind they are to be so full of grace).
10. Verse 9. Think of a situation where a brother is tearing another brother down, but you have endeavored to bring peace in some way. What have you done that has been helpful?
I try to point out the good things in the person they are tearing down, or to help them see that we need to have empathy and compassion, because we don’t always know the whole story. I don’t know if that is always helpful, but I don’t like gossip or back biting.
11. When people are mocking you or scorning you, how can the promise of this verse help overcome your pain?
I don’t try to defend myself, because I know my Father in Heaven knows my heart. I may cry in my pillow later, but I pray for God to help me let go of things…like when my kids hurt my feelings or make me feel that I am a dinosaur.
Sweet Patti, I sure identify with your last answer. 🥴
Like a dinosaur!

Thank you, Dee! I am thankful for this podcast. It was so good to listen to it again. “Aging is a gift”. Would make for a neat framed art piece by our bathroom mirror. (Smile.)
—I have several prayer needs that are fairly heavy and I am trying to keep perspective. I find that the details of the problems can be overwhelming. The desire for answers and trying in my own mind to figure out what needs to be done and how to accomplish it has dominated my thinking and just plain troubles my soul.
So as I am now in Psalms in my daily bible reading I come to 103 and 104.
Each chapter begins with and ends with the phrase “Let all that I am praise the Lord”. Then in between are a wealth of verses to consider Who God is and what He is doing and has done. God sort of is putting my feet back down on the solid ground of his incredible beauty and sovereignty. After meditating some on these scriptures I’m gaining a better perspective on how to approach the problems I am praying about. I needed to slow down and actually stop mulling over the problems and be mindful of my need to immerse myself in giving myself over to praise. Not just a lip service kind of praise but with my whole heart. That phrase is what challenges me. To let all that I am praise the Lord. My whole heart. I see I have much to learn yet in how to praise God but I do long for Him and the beauty of his presence in my life. I get so caught up in the mundane and details of life and the problems that I fail to see Him for who He really is and the magnitude of that. And now the challenge comes to me to just slow down, stop and “Let all that I am praise the Lord”.
Thank you for sharing this, Bev.💕 I am working on this too! my whole heart!
Oh, Bev! God is so good! I found myself in a similar situation, having received news from a family member in the Philippines. Yes, to not get caught up in the mundane…the problems… but to see Him for who He really is. The article I shared below from The Gospel Coalition spoke to me as well. Thanks for sharing!
Bev on Psalm 103 and 104:
To let all that I am praise the Lord. My whole heart. I see I have much to learn yet in how to praise God but I do long for Him and the beauty of his presence in my life. I get so caught up in the mundane and details of life and the problems that I fail to see Him for who He really is and the magnitude of that. And now the challenge comes to me to just slow down, stop and “Let all that I am praise the Lord”.

I am not sure if I shortened this link too much. But this was written by Andrew Wilson from the TGC website. It even has an audio!
Thank you for sharing this, Bing!
I read it Bing — so good!

This verse kept coming to me over and over this week: Isaiah 30:15 : “For thus the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said, ‘In repentance and rest, you will be saved, In quietness and trust is your strength.” How I have needed that. I have struggled so with being alone, and though we are all ultimately alone, it is an adjustment. God is so good and so faithful, He has brought people into my life that I have not sought, but I can see His hand in it all. I am letting go of my fears and resting in Him much more.
This verse goes well with it: Psalm 34:1 “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be on my lips.”
Oh Patti — this is such a hard time for you and I am so proud of you pressing into the Lord, seeing fellowship, ministry… I do pray for you, but I know it’s a hard river to cross. I remember feeling that way when we moved to Seattle and Steve was simply gone all the time – -and then I met you!
I am so thankful that God brought our lives to that place at that time! The beginning of a wonderful friendship! I am so thankful for so many things about you, Dee. You have shared the gifts God has given you in so many ways with so many people.
12. If that happened this week, slow down — then share here.
It’s been a rough week, but I have allowed myself to slow down after finishing the school year. It usually takes me about 6 weeks to come off the school “high.” (!)
SO, I have done LOTS of Bible study this week. Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth encouraging me to read my Bible and take each verse of it, each day, and CHEW! Meditate and ponder. Take notes.
I found a you tube video that explained when, how and where each of the disciples died. I am going to it and looking up the verses from where they glean the information to understand.
I am involved in a devotional study with 2 friends on YouVersion. One of the friends has been in the hospital for the last 2 weeks and is suffering with a nerve problem. She reached out to us and asked if we would help her with her belief! Long story but she hasn’t been too involved with her faith in the last few years. We have been doing devotionals and sharing with each other. SO sweet.
Finally, on my YouVersion Bible app, the entire week has been studying the Beatitudes!!! I can’t believe it. Exactly what we are studying here too. I suppose that is what He is pressing on my heart. Not just one, but the entire collection of the Sermon on the Mount. Reminding me that when I follow His ways that I will be blessed. Sometimes I am finding it so hard, especially this week. Grace is giving me such trouble.
Saturday:
13. What is your takeaway and why?
This week feels like a spiritual growth spurt for me. It is an amazing experience to take a word or two or phrases and chew on them. I am thankful for the many available translations of the Bible and the conversations here!
A Pentecost experience where the Word of God comes alive regardless of our command of the English language. God comes and speaks to us in a personal way, newer ways, inexhaustible ways that make us love Him more and more.
Love this Bing!
