We are returning to the second half of Revelation after an 8 week break in Romans. Even though Romans and Revelation are very different kinds of literature, they are part of God’s same story. For both, the heart is the mystery of God, which is the gospel. This is the secret that God is revealing to His own throughout the ages. It is the secret the devil hates and fights against.
We are also headed into the holidays. And you know what? It works. For we need to make this time of year so centered on Christ, and on strengthening our inner life, that we are a light in the darkness with our family, our friends, and our community.
As we return to Revelation, we hit the heart of the book in chapter 12, so even if you have not been with us, you can step in, for I’ll keep summarizing. It will help you to get David Campbell’s commentary: Mystery Revealed.
Revelation is apocalytpic literature, meaning God communicates through signs and symbols, pictures that are puzzles. In Revelation 12 there is a picture of a woman about to give birth and a dragon who wants to swallow her child up. The woman and her child represent not only Mary and Jesus, whom the dragon tried to swallow up at Christ’s birth, but all of God’s people from the beginning of time, whom the dragon is still trying to swallow up.
The dragon is Satan and all the spiritual forces of darkness. He failed to kill Jesus at his birth, and thought he succeeded at His crucifixion
Do you remember Paige’s kindergarten “show and tell” story when she brought her tonsils in a jar? The teacher threw up. Paige said, at the resurrection of Christ, Satan threw up.
This is basically where we at Revelation 12. It summarizes the battle, and at the close, after Satan’s huge failure (the resurrection) “…the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea.” (Rev. 12:17)
Though there are many interpretative views of Revelation, they all agree that it shows a battle between Satan and God, between Satan’s children and God’s children, and, because of the gospel, the power that came through the death and resurrection of Christ, God and His children will win in the end. But for now, we are at war.
The disagreement occurs not about the fact of this, but the timing of it all. The view this study takes is the Idealist view which believes the tribulation began at the resurrection, when “Satan threw up.” It will continue until the return of Christ, though will intensify, like the birth pangs of a woman intensify before the actual birth (the return of Christ.)
The idealist view does not believe there will be a rapture. But whatever view you take, know that we are in a battle, and the battle is not with flesh and blood, but with the forces of darkness. How are we to prevail? Through the power of the gospel which can deliver us not just from the penalty of sin, but the power of sin.
Here we go!
The Benham Brothers, David and Jason, were so excited to land a reality house flipping show, but though it was all set to go and HGTV said they were solidly behind them even though they knew they were pro-life and pro-God’s plan for marriage, when those that disagreed starting circling the network’s wagons, they caved and scrapped the show. Though they had been tempted, the Benham brothers refused to hide their light under a bushel, and they paid the cost. They said:
This is not a fight between conservative and liberal or Republican and Democrat, this is a fight between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent.
That is what we must realize and what Revelation 12 is all about. There is a dragon who wants us to hide our light, who wants us to compromise with the world. The Benham brothers also said that when God gives us something we love (like a reality tv show) we must hold it loosely or He will pry our fingers away. Many of you have already watched the Benham brothers at the Wilberforce Weekend — here is a shorter interview for Focus on the Family:
We must be vigilant against the dragon dividing us in our homes and in our churches. because of our pride. For he loves to divide the sheep and then pluck them off one by one.
While a woman would seem to be no match against a fire-breathing dragon, that woman is Christ’s Beloved Bride, so she has a MIGHTY WARRIOR within.
This Christmas I’m giving a little red dragon to each of my children to put in their Nativity sets, for I plan to tell my grandchildren about the fight God’s children are in with a very real dragon. Then I’ll show them this animated poem by Glen Shivener:
A DRAGON lurks among us who LOVES TO TEMPT US TO HIDE OUR LIGHT.
A DRAGON lurks among us who LOVES TO DIVIDE OUR MARRIAGES AND OUR CHURCHES.
We have been so divided this year over masks, vaccines, politics — and we often fail to see who is really behind our discord. At the close of the week. let’s ponder strategy against our real enemy. I’m excited to do it with you, such thoughtful and wise sisters.
WE, THE SEED OF THE WOMAN ARE IN A FIGHT WITH THE SEED OF THE SERPENT.
LET US WIN IT TOGETHER.

4. Read Revelation 12:1-2
A. Describe the first sight that appeared in heaven.
B. Before reading Campbell, what do you think this represents and why?
5. In Mystery Explained, in the chapter about Revelation 12, read the first three paragraphs under THE FIRST VISION all the way up to “The vision continues: And another sign appeared in heaven.”
A. How does Joseph’s vision in Gen. 37 help us identify who this woman represents?
B. In the 2nd paragraph, what other Old Testament passages shed light on the identity of the woman?
C. The woman is in agony – what does this mean in the New Testament and what does mean for believers?
6. Read John 16:17-24.
A. What analogy does Jesus make to a woman in labor for the disciples? Why does He does this, do you think?
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, how might this analogy give us hope?
C. How might this analogy help you to pay the cost of not compromising or the cost of humbling yourself?
Tuesday: The Great Red Dragon
7. Read Revelation 12:3-4 and describe the second vision.
8. Continue reading under “Another sign appeared” up to “The battle is engaged.” What light do the Old Testament references Dr. Campbell gives shed on this vision?
9. Dr. Campbell says the dragon “is in fact the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” How do the seven heads, ten horns, and red color demonstrate this?
10. Read the paragraph that begins “the battle is engaged” up to “the condensation of Christ’s life.” How does the battle in heaven mirror the battle on earth?
Wednesday: The Child and The Woman in the Wilderness
11. Read Revelation 12:5-6
A. What do you learn about the child from verse 5?
B. How can you identify Him with Christ? (Psalm 2 may help)
12. Read the paragraph that begins The Condensation…up to “As the child”

A. What does the wilderness represent in Scripture?
B. Dr. Campbell has a different perspective than I have always thought of the place Jesus has gone to prepare. What does he say? What do you think and why? (I myself am not sure — for I have always loved the thought of my bridegroom going to prepare a home for me, as bridegrooms did in biblical days, with the help of their fathers. But, indeed, it is a mystery.)
C. What do you learn about the numbers in this passage?
D. Who is the Babylonian harlot?
Thursday/Friday Application
I want to take some time applying these lessons to various situations where the dragon is endeavoring to get us to compromise God’s Word or to divide us in our families or the family of God.
15. Read 1 John 4:4-6
A. What is one way, according to this passage, to recognize that the dragon is speaking?
B. Give a few illustrations of the viewpoint of the world — for many Christians have been swayed!
C. How might you let your light shine brighter in the world?
I was very moved by an illustration one of the Benham brothers gave about a hostile woman on an airplane. He was ready to fight but the Spirit told him to just listen to her, and he did. He discovered she was a hurting woman overcome with anxiety. He finally read Psalm 139 to her and she began to weep. He said that the people in the world are held captive and they need a warrior, a warrior who will both truly love them and speak truth to them.
16. Read 1 John 4:7-12
A. Describe the kind of love we are called to have.
B. Can you think of a situation or person in your life where you could overcome evil with sacrificial love?
17. Read 1 John 4:19-21
A. What strong statement does John make?
B. Why does the dragon try to divide us as brothers and sisters?
C. What has been effective for you in the past to reconcile with an offended brother? Be specific.
D. Is there an application for your life now?

Oh Dee! You are brilliant in these studies you design for us! Thank you.
Can I steal your dragon idea for the kids?
I didn’t finish Paige’s last study; it was jam packed. I do plan to continue it until I do finish.
I like the reminder that it is really Satan doing these divisive things to our world, instead of blaming each other, although it is hard.
I do agree with Laura, Dee! God is so good to us for using you to encourage our faith. I love the dragon slayer narration and the voice-over is excellent! Thank you so much. Who would have thought of such an illustration? The enemy is lurking and lashing but we have our powerful Knight to fight the battle for us!
Thank you for the beautiful interlude of Paige’s Book of Romans study. Exactly what I needed. I would need to go back and savor the riches of His Word. It was so life-changing. I also feel like I have gotten to know the ladies in this blog a little bit more. What a blessing it has been to journey with such wise and loving sisters!
Looking forward to finishing the book of Revelation with everybody here.
Bing — it so warms my heart to hear that about Paige’s study. A dear friend here who did it in person with a group with me said I have the feelings I had as a new Christian — excitement and anticipation!
Oh, Dee. your friend put how I feel in words: ” I have the feelings I had as a new Christian — excitement and anticipation!” I don’t think I have been as excited as I have been with the study of Romans. So much so that our next study with some close friends might be Romans! It might be a little selfish of me but I want to revisit the treasures of the Book and bring along some women with me. Thinking of doing Warren Wiersbe’s study but am open to suggestions from you and the other ladies here. We will not do it until spring. Of course, I will be staying on here!
Bing & Laura–I agree with you both on the dragon and especially the richness and timeliness of Paige’s Romans study. I so regret not being able to do more of it with you all here but it ministered to me so much to listen. I have been so overwhelmed lately with increased hours at work and with my home life, and honestly I’ve also been battling some depression…but I will always love this fellowship here. So thankful for your faithfulness Dee and for how the Lord has used it.
Lizzy-been thinking of you lately especially upon seeing the special gift The Chosen has produced. Have you seen it? It is the picture of Mary Magdalene being embraced by Jesus. And the caption? “You are mine.”
I know this is a special verse for you and I pray that the mighty Knight will deliver you from the dragon of depression. “Fear not for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters I will be with you, When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”
Lizzy — I’m sad to learn you are battling depression — so hard — but thankful you told us so we can pray!
Bing & Dee–out of rep[lies for your words, but thank you. Bing you made me cry–which was good! Your thoughtfulness always touches me, the Lord has used you so many times to encourage me!
Honestly, I’m also sad I didn’t stay active here through Romans because it’s such a beautiful body. When Paige talked this week about us needing one another…I thought how much I need this group! You all are treasures to me, I’ve never “met” more beautiful hearts!
♥️♥️🙏🙏
Thank you, Laura. And yes — take the idea. I’m trying to decide how young to go with it, as I don’t want to produce nightmares!
I’m going to get them nativities this year and maybe (?) the dragon too? Not sure yet. They are sponges and I don’t want to miss my chance 🤨. I did not do this with my own children.
Wow. I love the dragon picture of the battleThe video is great. The battle has been so great in my life this past year. Every area of my life has been under attack. The enemy has been working so hard that I found myself saying, I feel so alone in this battle and that there isn’t one thing left to be joyful about. Of course, this isn’t true-but it feels that way. My sweet husband who is in this battle as well, brought me the perfect verse yesterday.Psalm 34:9
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
I am so thankful for the way the Lord has used this group and the teaching here. Bing, I have been holding onto the song you gave me. “He Will Hold Me Fast’ It has been a lifeline these last weeks. Life is unpredictable currently, but I’m going to try to jump back in as I’m able. 💜
Good to see you here, Chris….you are not alone in your battle!
Chris! So happy you are here ♥️!
Chris — glad to see you back. The battle is far too big to do alone — we need you too!
Thank you all. The encouragement is so appreciated. I watched The Voyage of the Dawn Treader last night with my daughter who is facing a huge struggle. It was such a blessing to me and I hope for her as well. Seeing the characters face their fears and win the battle by clinging to their faith made me realize much of our battle in this life is fear. Fear about what others think or what they might do, or what God may allow in our life. At the root of the fears is our belief that God will not be enough for us in those fearful times. We must believe He is good and His love for us will hold us fast. Looking forward to learning more from all of you.
Chris, I often remember you when I think of that song. Right now, several friends are battling their own spiritual wars. I see God refining them and it is beautiful to watch their faith grow. we can be tempted just to float lazily through the river of life because it is easy. Our enemy does not attack us when we choose easy. But when we follow hard after God, we get into his radar and he doubles up his efforts. Thanks be to Jesus for the victory He has already won for us. Praying for you.
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
Oh so much.
The battle of Satan against God and His children.
Holding loosely to those beloved gifts God gives. I have always thought about this, even with my sweet dog I love so much! It was probably what struck me most in reading Stepping Heavenward, give thanks but “hold loosely”.
I appreciated your simplified summary of the idealist view: the tribulation began at the resurrection, it will continue until the return of Christ, and though it will intensify, there will not be a rapture.
We must be vigilant against the dragon dividing us
2. How might this be relevant to you right now in your life?
I feel the Dragon at the door of my mind, filling it with whispers, lies. I hear him say how defective I am that my own sisters, my own Mom, my daughter, can cut me out…I look at my life and it is none of what I imagined as a young girl or even newly wed. I feel all the old whispers of not being enough. And yet, even as I type, I DO sense the Lord, my Advocate, my Defender, fighting back for me, protecting my heart, I am His. But there is a battle, I feel that. And I’m weary and but not hopeless. I know the truth, I just have to keep reminding myself.
Oh Lizzy, I was happy to see you “appear” here tonight as I am on here too right now….and then I started reading your post. Oh please do not listen to those lies telling you that you are defective. I cannot understand the actions or motives of some in your family who have cut you out, but I am sure that it does not reflect on you, on who you are, on how valuable you are. And I also hate to hear that you are battling depression, too. I know that these are very heavy things weighing you down, making you weary. Your Advocate is fighting back for you, protecting you, defending you. May you rest in that. And we are always here for you, Lizzy, and we love you – everyone here does – you are our sister and our friend.
Amen.
Amen to what Susan said. You are a treasure to us. I’ll continue to keep you in my prayers.
So much of your story resonates with me, dear Lizzie. So very much it’s unbelievable. And while I’m not happy this is happening to you, it makes me feel so not alone. How special you are to God to be asked to go through this very special and most difficult suffering! Much love to you.
Missy-I do hate that you can relate, but your words are such a comfort to me. I feel surrounded by people who have the gift of family all around them…it does help me not feel so alone. Praying for you too and for Him to give you strength for all He has called you to.
Oh Lizzy — I have such a strong rebuttal for all of those lies. You are a survivor who survived a very dysfunctional family, for from the time you were a little girl God had his hand on you. Their rejection may actually be part of your protection. And I’ve shared with you about your daughter, so won’t do it here, but you know the truth and must hold to it. What Paige’s series did for me was wash me in His love by repeating the gospel with so many pictures that last — here are a few:
It’s like a blanket we can wrap up in when the bitter winds blow.
He’s loved us longer than there are fish in the sea, stars in the sky.
It’s true we are so sinful and selfish — not one has sought God – BUT GOD! THERE IS THEREFORE NOW NO CONDEMNATION TO THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS.
In Gethsemane, when Jesus asked His Abba if there could be another way. his Father said not unless you don’t want Paige, Lizzy, Dee…and so He did it. And when He rose from the dead, Satan threw up.
What beautiful truths!
Praying for you. Proverbs 24:16for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.
Amen, Chris. So good to see you back. Praying for the Lord to help you to withstand the attacks that you have encountered this year. Praying that the Lord will take the fear from your heart and that of your daughter.
Oh, dear sweet ladies! I am so thankful for you, dear Dee! Thanking God for you and for bringing all of us together, though I am late to the group. Satan is really ramping up his attacks on many of us. It is so good to see you back Lizzy and Chris, I so understand the pain of family members cutting you out. I am so grateful for this entire group of godly, prayer warriors. You are all beautiful women, with hearts for the Lord. I know the enemy does not like love, prayer and unity. This is a battle, but we have the LORD on our side. I hope you listen to the Benham Brothers. They had some powerful statements. I love Matthew 5:11 :
” Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.”
I cling to that blessing. I agree with Bing that the study with Paige was life changing~ like when I first became a Christian!! I found it hard to keep up with the study and I am retired! It was a lot and I pray that her lectures will be available in some way in the future.
I totally agree with every word you stated here, Bing: “Thank you for the beautiful interlude of Paige’s Book of Romans study. Exactly what I needed. I would need to go back and savor the riches of His Word. It was so life-changing. I also feel like I have gotten to know the ladies in this blog a little bit more. What a blessing it has been to journey with such wise and loving sisters!” AMEN TO THIS!
I am so grateful to each of you dear ladies~ you have enriched my life more than words can say!
You are such a treasure, dear Patti, always encouraging others!
And I am so inspired and in awe of your gifts of love and grace with your family, Missy. You are a blessing! What grace and love I see on the Blog. I am so very thankful to be part of this lovely community. As Lizzy mentioned, we are not meant to be alone. There is such godly wisdom, strength and support in this group. I feel we all need extra prayer support now that we are back in Revelations. May God put a hedge of protection around each of us; our heart, soul, mind, body and spirit.
Yes, Patti is an encourager! Hi, Missy!
Lizzy, may the truth of God’s Word silence the enemy’s whispers and lies. “No weapon forged against you will prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. Isaiah 54:17
3. Read Revelation 12:1-6 aloud to yourself and share initial thoughts.
Satan lurks, waiting to devour (v.4)
God is greater- “but her child was caught up to God” (v.5)
He protects His own, prepares a place for her (v.6)
4. Read Revelation 12:1-2
A. Describe the first sight that appeared in heaven.
A pregnant woman, in the pain of childbirth, clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and a crown of 12 stars on her head.
B. Before reading Campbell, what do you think this represents and why?
The 12 stars makes me think the 12 tribes.
5. In Mystery Explained, in the chapter about Revelation 12, read the first three paragraphs under THE FIRST VISION all the way up to “The vision continues: And another sign appeared in heaven.”
A. How does Joseph’s vision in Gen. 37 help us identify who this woman represents?
We just finished going all through Genesis at church and this is like Joseph’s dream, but now 12 stars, the 12 tribes of Israel. She represents the restored Israel.
B. In the 2nd paragraph, what other Old Testament passages shed light on the identity of the woman?
Gen. 3, Eve’s seed will bruise the serpents head. Isaiah 7, the virgin with child. Isa. 52, Sarah’s offspring, faithful remnant.
C. The woman is in agony – what does this mean in the New Testament and what does mean for believers?
This refers to trial and persecution. In Rev. it refers to torment either sent from Satan or God.
It represents for us the tribulation to be experienced leading up to Christ’s return.
6. Read John 16:17-24.
A. What analogy does Jesus make to a woman in labor for the disciples? Why does He does this, do you think?
When a woman gives birth she endures pain, but once the baby is born her pain is overshadowed by joy. We will suffer pain and anguish as we await Christ’s return. But on the Day, all of our trials will be washed away, over powered by the joy of Him.
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, how might this analogy give us hope?
I do think a lot about my promised future, my true Home. I don’t know how anyone could have hope without believing the truth of His promises.
C. How might this analogy help you to pay the cost of not compromising or the cost of humbling yourself?
He endured the Cross, for the joy set before Him—for us, for me. I want to endure my much smaller trials with the joy of Him set before me.
7. Read Revelation 12:3-4 and describe the second vision.
A great red dragon, with 7 heads and 10n horns, and 7 diadems on his heads. His tail swept down 1/3 of the stars of heaven, casting them to the earth. The dragon stood before the woman in labor, waiting to devour her child.
8. Continue reading under “Another sign appeared” up to “The battle is engaged.” What light do the Old Testament references Dr. Campbell gives shed on this vision?
The OT dragon is the evil sea monster, symbolizing the kingdoms trying to attack Israel. Isaiah 27:1-prophesy that God will destroy this Egyptian dragon of the sea.
9. Dr. Campbell says the dragon “is in fact the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” How do the seven heads, ten horns, and red color demonstrate this?
“. The 7 heads and 10 horns-indicate the global, comprehensive nature of his power. The red color represents the harlot and beast of Daniel’s vision. Red like the blood of the saints. The crowns show that he works through earthly kingdoms. The picture is also a blasphemous and rebellious imitation of Christ’s kingdom.
10. Read the paragraph that begins “the battle is engaged” up to “the condensation of Christ’s life.” How does the battle in heaven mirror the battle on earth?
The dragon’s attack hurts some of the faithful. This is represented by their guardian angels. When saints are persecuted, their angels and God are pictured as being attacked. Here the dragon has one goal-to devour the Child.
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
It is always good to be reminded that there is a “dragon” who is operating behind the scenes when we face temptation and division in our homes, relationships, churches, and in society in general. Very often, we look at the person right in front of us and see them as the enemy when they are not. It is true that we are no match for Satan, the dragon, but we do have a mighty warrior who stands with us and stands against the evil one, and He gives us the power to overcome. The Idealist view of Revelation seems to make a lot of sense, when you think of Paige’s example that at Jesus’ resurrection, Satan “threw up”, and then went off to make war on all of His children. I guess he thought that if he couldn’t sink Jesus, he would come after all of us and try to sink us.
2. How might this be relevant to you right now in your life?
There is always the temptation for me to see my husband as the enemy in many of our relational conflicts, or to blame him. This can happen in other relationships as well when there is conflict. We do have struggles, but I am aware that Satan would love to see us divided and our marriage crumble. I do think a key strategy of Satan is to isolate us from others because when we are alone, we are weak. He can’t separate us from God, but he can make us believe lies and to lose confidence in God’s love for us. I think that is where he attacks me a lot of the time, with the lie that I am a terrible person really and God doesn’t love me.
Susan–your honesty and wisdom always speak to me, and point me back to Him. This was so good for me: “a key strategy of Satan is to isolate us from others because when we are alone, we are weak. He can’t separate us from God, but he can make us believe lies and to lose confidence in God’s love for us.” I have been SO tempted to pull into my shell lately and hide, I sense Him near but I am weary and Homesick. Your words, and Paige’s from last week, remind me we are made to be in community, no matter how much my introverted self forgets that when I am hurting! That’s another blessing of this place, I do always feel welcome and it’s easy to come to, emotionally.
My sentiments too. Thank you, Susan and Lizzie.
I am so blessed by all three of you and so glad you are here.
Missy, I saw your son’s video on You-tube and it made me shiver. You really are in a huge battle and we need to pray for you. You have obeyed God, “signed up for this in” obedience and we must support you with our prayers! Just being here helps us remember you.
Father, I lift up Missy to You, asking You to enfold her in Your love, quicken her with Your wisdom, embolden her with Your Spirit and melt her son’s heart. In Your powerful name I pray.
Amen to Dee’s prayer. I am also so very blessed by all of you; your faith in God and your strength in daily life, as He undergirds and supports you in very rough waters! I praise God for each of you and I pray that you sense His presence, peace, love and strength daily. I keep remembering those words that Paige said: We serve an audience of ONE, the rest are only spectators.
Lizzy, when you said that you have been so tempted to pull into your shell lately and hide….you still sense Him near. That’s what I was thinking. He’s right there in your shell with you. It made me think of the retreat I went to in September. One of the speakers talked about how at her Catholic grade school, she was bullied terribly. She used to run from the playground and hide in the garage where the priest kept his car. Then she said, “And Jesus was there, hiding with me.”
I love that thought, Susan! Jesus is hiding with each of us! Praise Him!
Susan, I agree. Being aware of who is behind the discord in your marriage is powerful. I think of the armor of God and the verse that says, ” Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” I pray that you are able to stand against the onslaughts of the enemy.
So this concept is very relevant in our churches and in our world, there is a battle, a conflict going on between Satan who is working double time, it seems to divide all of us. God’s plan, his Gospel message, is where the attack is happening. It is very apparent in my church and I have struggled with this for several years. The job I took will end in December and I am aware of my great need to trust God and let the Spirit work on me to love all those who have been in the opposition to my effort and not allow the thorns of bitterness that threaten sometimes.
The dragon is the source of so much of the turmoil and has increased the heat everywhere. God wins! So glad we have the good news.
Yes, God wins! Praying for you just now, dear Shirley, to be released from bitterness and for His love to shine through you and that He will meet all of your need according to His riches in Christ Jesus.
Amen to Missy’s prayer for you Shirley.
Yes, Missy. Praying for you and your adopted children.
Amen to Missy and Dee’s prayer. Praying for you, Shirley. The enemy is so busy, God must be VERY CLOSE. Praying for you, Missy, as well. There is Power is Prayer.
How beautiful to have praying sisters!
It is heartwarming to know the prayers going up. Love and pray for each of you!
Yes Shirley! The Good News! I will pray.
Shirley, praying for you.
I’m so glad that I took the time last night and today to read everyone’s comments from last week. All of you are precious to me and I feel privileged to be able to pray for you.
Hopefully I will be able to again participate fully online. We have 4 grandchildren living with us right now and they really enjoy having me to play with every spare moment :). I have no job at the moment. It’s definitely a time of transition.
4 grandchildren! Wow, Dawn! Are you looking for a job and is that what we can pray for you?
Yes, Bing I am in need of a full time job.
I have only worked at one hospital since I was 18. I fully intended to retire from there, but that doesn’t seem to be the direction of my life right now.
The study in Romans has strengthened me and came at the perfect time.
Wow — what a transition, Dawn. May the Lord give you joy in them and open the right door for work.
I am starting a new prayer card! I will pray for the perfect job for you, Dawn. Enjoy the precious time with your grandchildren.
Dawn–what a gift you are to those grandkids, and your kids! I must have missed where you left your old job, I remember it often being a hard place. Praying now for His provision of a job, where you can be encouraged and appreciated for all you are! 🙂
I’m sorry to hear of your troubles Dawn. It is disappointing how people are doing treated in our country right now. I will pray for you.
Dawn, praying about you finding a new job….and what a blessing to have your grandchildren with you!

1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
The idea of putting the dragon in a nativity scene intrigued me. I did like the Glen Shivener video. I was reminded of the Passion of Christ where the “Satan” character creeps around throughout the movie. I think they should of made the character a dragon.
2. How might this be relevant to you right now in your life?
It’s a reminder that the enemy is walking about seeking whom he can devour, 1 Peter 5:8. We are in a battle but we’ve been given armor that we’re to put on so we can stand firm. Ephesians 6:13
Sharon, thank you for the reminder of our armor in Christ.
That would have been a good touch for The Passion of Christ!
Sunday:
What stands out to you from the above and why?
That we are in a fight, a spiritual battle against the seed of the serpent. And that we often fail to see who is behind our discord. Even more that I need the Holy Spirit to help me and to not rely on myself. And to watch my thought life and what I feed my mind. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5
2. 2. How might this be relevant to you right now in your life?
It is often easy to see the person in front of me as my enemy-I need to be vigilant and quick to pray to the Holy Spirit to give me discernment and follow His lead. I remember Paige talking about a transformed mind being a renewed mind. And I think this applies to a mind that knows not only how to live a life of love but also how to do battle with the enemy. We cannot fight the enemy on our own. We need Jesus to help us.
I often think of this verse that a friend shared with me. I need the confidence of this verse in my life: “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the LORD.” Isaiah 54:17
Thank you for the reminder of this precious verse from Isaiah, dear Bing.
I often bring this verse to remembrance. And I pray this verse for all of us here. The enemy is vicious but we cling to our Mighty Warrior-He will not fail us and will hold us fast.
Great reminders, Bing and Sharon! I am going to print both of those verses out! Thank you. I can tell just from reading yesterday and today posts that we All need our armor in Christ! Thank you for the Isaiah verse Bing.
What stood out to me was the dragon in the nativity. I had just become so discouraged tonight reading some posts on social media which are so full of venom and hate toward anybody with a differing opinion, especially related to spiritual matters. And, on top of it all, is the hateful dissension in my own extended family. Oh, how it burdens my heart down with sorrow. The poem about the dragon in the nativity actually gave me hope to recall that our dear Lord Jesus, born as a helpless babe in that dirty cow stall, was indeed a dragon slayer! As Screw Tape letters reveals, The Dragon is so cunning to divide and alienate even God’s people and godly families, pitting them against each other in order to weaken our testimony. Yes, this Dragon is lurking around to devour, but thanks be to God, He sent a dragon slayer! Just makes my heart sing as I head to bed after working late tonight. God bless you all with His peace that passes understanding.
God bless you dear Missy. The dragon is so active….and lurking. Prayers for you to know His peace that passes understanding.
Missy you need to get off of social media sweet friend! I did about a year ago and what freedom! The world has become a hateful place in just the course of 2 years. It is sad. I have built a hedge of Him around myself by pressing in and leaving this world behind. Division in our family too, regarding the inoculation. Mostly what I see is people being driven by fear instead of facts. The Bible does say that even families will be divided, doesn’t it? Children against parents and such. I will pray for our peace.
Dee, the Bentham brothers movie doesn’t play, it’s just the president introducing the event.
Thanks so much, Laura! I couldn’t find that one, so substituted a shorter interview they did. Thanks for the catch!
3. Read Revelation 12:1-6 aloud to yourself and share initial thoughts.
I know the woman is Mary and she will give birth to Jesus. The dragon is satan. It’s as if she represents Earth (us, sun and moon), and he represents everything else (stars). The 12 stars on her head are the tribes/disciples. His 7, 10, 7 crown seems like it is perfect (7), but the 10 (horns) make it not so. When she births the baby He is taken to God and she is protected. I do not understand the 1,260 days other than it is a period of time. But how did “they” get this number??? It’s a dream, Laura….
4. Read Revelation 12:1-2
A. Describe the first sight that appeared in heaven.
There is a woman who is pregnant and going to give birth soon. She is “clothed” with the sun, is she sitting in earth with the moon beneath her feet? She is crying out because of her pain.
3. Read Revelation 12:1-6 aloud to yourself and share initial thoughts.
A woman clothed with the sun – made me think of being clothed with the righteousness of Christ. The woman giving birth could picture Mary and Jesus, as it says in verse 5 that she gave birth to a boy who was to rule all nations with an iron rod, and how the dragon, who is revealed to be Satan in verse 9, tried to destroy the child. Verses 10-12 are encouraging, as we are told that the Accuser has been thrown down to earth, defeated because of the blood of the Lamb and “because of their testimony. And they were not afraid to die.” Could this mean that, for example, the testimony of the early disciples, who refused to stop proclaiming the news about Jesus, and who were all martyred, except for John, and even later, the apostle Paul – their faithful testimony helped to defeat Satan?
4. Read Revelation 12:1-2
A. Describe the first sight that appeared in heaven.
John saw a woman clothed with the sun and with the moon under her feet, and wearing a crown of seven stars on her head. She was pregnant and crying out with labor pains.
B. Before reading Campbell, what do you think this represents, and why?
Based on the first twelve verses, this could represent Mary and the birth of Jesus, or even, because we have learned that time in Revelation is not how we mark time, it could also be the birth of the nation of Israel – what do the twelve crowns represent – the 12 tribes of Israel? And from one of those tribes would come the Messiah. Maybe it represents how Satan has been actively trying to thwart God’s plan of salvation all throughout history….maybe even going back to Eve, as she was the mother of all.
5. In Mystery Explained, in the chapter about Revelation 12, read the first three paragraphs under THE FIRST VISION all the way up to “the vision continues: And another sign appeared in heaven.”
A. How does Joseph’s vision in Genesis 37 help us identify who this woman represents?
Joseph had a dream about the sun, moon, and starts bowing before him. Campbell says that John’s vision is a reference to Joseph’s vision, and so the twelve starts represent the twelve tribes of Israel, with the 12th star representing Joseph himself. The woman represents the restored Israel of the end times, which in other places in Revelation means the church.
B. In the 2nd paragraph, what other Old Testament passages shed light on the identity of the woman?
The woman represents the faithful remnant of Israel: Genesis 3:14-16 Eve’s pain in childbirth, her seed is prophesied to bruise the head of the serpent; the woman gives birth to the One who will restore what was lost in the Garden.
Isaiah 7:10-14 talks about “signs” – a sign being seen as high as heaven, the virgin will be with child and will bear a son. In John’s vision, a sign appears in heaven, a woman is pregnant and gives birth to a son.
Israel is also depicted as a pregnant woman crying out in her pain while awaiting to give birth in Isaiah 26:16-19.
In Isaiah 52:1-11, Sarah gives birth so that eventually, through the remnant, God’s truth will reach the nations, Eden will be restored, and the dragon killed.
C. The woman is in agony – what does this mean in the New Testament and what does it mean for believers?
This word for “agony” is used in the NT to refer to trial and persecution. In Revelation, it refers to a torment sent either from the devil or from God. For believers, it means trials, persecution, and hardship.
6. Read John 16:17-24
A. What analogy does Jesus make to a woman in labor for the disciples? Why does He think this, do you think?
Jesus has just told his disciples that in a little while, he will be gone and they won’t see him anymore. Then, a little while after that, they will see him again. But Jesus understands that his friends will weep and mourn and be filled with grief and sorrow for a little while, but then their grief will be turned to joy when they see him again (at his resurrection). Jesus then compares what their experience will be like to a woman in labor; it’s painful and hard, but when the child is born, she forgets all about that and rejoices. I think Jesus understands and cares about how His disciples will feel, and what they will go through, when they see Him killed, and so He gives them a metaphor to hold on to that promises hope.
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, how might this analogy give us hope?
It can give us hope if we think about how our suffering or trials are going to, in the end, be rewarded with great joy. We are “birthing” something new, if we allow the trials and suffering to shape us and make us hold on to Him ever more tightly.
C. How might this analogy help you to pay the cost of not compromising or the cost of humbling yourself?
Switching out pride for humility can be painful….maybe it is helpful to imagine the joy on the Father’s face when we do it, when we go through the painful labor of throwing off some sin or enduring persecution for His sake….in a way, it is our “new birth” that awaits us….as in the idea that our conversion is an ongoing conversion throughout our entire lifetime….we have many opportunities to experience “new births” that continue to change and transform us more and more into His likeness.
Love this from Susan:
Switching out pride for humility can be painful….maybe it is helpful to imagine the joy on the Father’s face when we do it, when we go through the painful labor of throwing off some sin or enduring persecution for His sake…
Susan, I was just reading back through last weeks comments before getting started today, and I read your struggle with your marriage from November 8. I’m facing a similar struggle in that my husband and I both are struggling to find common ground emotionally, spiritually, etc. The Lord has allowed changes in our lives that have made our relationship look so different after 30 years that we are struggling to know how to move forward. We have been in counseling and are to a point where I feel like we still don’t know how to move forward from here, though we both want to. Just this week, I found a gem of a series from Chip Ingram called Keeping Love Alive. I’m not very far in yet, but so far his teaching from Colossians is speaking to my heart in a way that makes sense. I’ll be praying for you to also find a way forward in your situation. The key thing I have learned this week is that we are to expect marriage to be tough and work hard to learn what ways God is using our spouse to fashion us to be more like Christ. Though I have known this, I’m getting a fresh look at it and I feel the Lord leading me forward from the hard place I’ve been. 💜
Thank you Chris! I love to listen to Chip Ingram too – he is so very practical and down to earth, easy to understand. I will have to look for that teaching series from him. I can relate to your struggle as you and your husband are trying to find common ground emotionally, spiritually….
My husband isn’t a believer, so the spiritual common ground hasn’t happened yet between us, but he supports me in my faith. I will remember to be praying for you and your husband.
Chris and Susan, I am just reading your exchange here today. Though I may not necessarily be in the same situation as you, I was struck by the commonality of our struggles. After working full time for almost two decades, I now am staying home and my husband and I are sharing more time with each other. I have realized that my husband is still who he is and it’s not that I did not know. I find that our close encounters (of the nth kind-hah) for longer periods of time can easily be an intrusion. So I am guarding our marriage with lots of praying and reflection. One thing that has really helped me is tongue control. LOL I have been tempted many times to speak my mind for the sake of honesty. Some days, I have blown it but the times I bit my tongue and pray and seek God’s truth, my perspective has changed. I will check Chip Ingram’s series. Thanks as always for being honest with your struggles. We are true, not alone.
oh Bing. Thank you. And my husband I’m sure will thank you…I needed this reminder “tongue control”. My husband too is still working from home and while I’ve mostly enjoyed it because he’s there for Philip while I’m at work, etc…it’s a LOT of togetherness and I tend to say all my thoughts…”just being honest” 😉 I need to pray for wisdom & tongue control!
Susan, this is just beautiful I’m writing it in my journal to remember. Such a good perspective “to imagine the joy on the Father’s face when we do it, when we go through the painful labor of throwing off some sin or enduring persecution for His sake…”
1.) What stands out to you from the above and why? I love Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. I loved the entire interview with the Benham Brothers. They took what the enemy wanted to destroy and used it to become bridges for Jesus. I found so many excellent truths, stated so concisely in their discussion!
Bullies destroy but the Broken Build Bridges. God’s Blessings are found within God’s Boundaries. When the Boundaries are removed, The Blessings are replaced with Burdens. Boldness without Brokeness makes you a Bully. Perception is not Reality; Truth is Reality.
2.) How might this be relevant to you right now in your life? In spite of so much negativity and so many dragons, Our God Reigns. We are children of God and we need to be the salt and the light. We need to stay in His Word and to nourish our souls. I love what you stated, Dee: For we need to make this time of year so centered on Christ, and on strengthening our inner life, that we are a light in the darkness with our family, our friends, and our community.
I just have to say I popped on here and I’m bawling! You all have NO IDEA how much the Lord has used you to encourage me! I was lying in bed this morning and I asked Him to pull me out of my pit today. I have been going through the motions of what I’m supposed to do, but I asked Him to show me HOPE and to pull me OUT. And you ALL have done that! I picture Susan holding on to my hand and each one of you holding on to her and literally I feel the first bit of true light I have felt in aa while. Oh too many tears to type. I just love you all so much. Thank you. Thank you for listening and taking time to care,
Oh, dear Lizzy!! How I am praying for you! I am crying reading your post. You are such a blessing to everyone on this blog! I am so happy when I see a post from you! I pray that the Lord will lift you from the pit of depression!! I love the image of Susan holding your hand and every other lady here holding on to her! How I pray that we all can see a picture of all of us in a large circle holding one another’s hand and praying to our Lord together! He is here in this circle of Christian love. I have felt it since I joined you all last year! How I look forward to reading your posts, your joys, your needs and I started my prayer cards because of you, Lizzy. You are love and very necessary in this world! I am so blessed to come to the Lord on your behalf ….each one of you…for prayer. He is able. He is God.
How I Praise God for Dee and all she has done to bring praying hearts together. I love you dear ladies. And I am on the West Coast so always late, but I wanted to thank Mary and Shirley for the prayers last week. I just saw them this morning. I felt your prayers.
❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️
Wow! This is good 😉. I remember years ago how this group pulled me through the awful time with our daughter. I know how it feels to be here and feel loved. I’m so glad you have Hope, “Hope!” ♥️♥️♥️
So glad to see this post, dear dear Lizzy.
Lizzy, I’m usually up pretty early, like at 6 am, but today, I stayed in bed until 8! I was praying about a lot of things and for a lot of people, and I also prayed for you. You are so dear to us, to me….I am so happy that you are feeling some light and hope! I believe with all my heart what Dee wrote about you above, and I told God that this morning, that He has had His hand upon you since you were a small child.
It’s funny, I LOVED the Romans study and welcomed the break from Rev., but my life is really full right now and I had such trouble keeping up with posting here. The Revelation study has honestly been hard for me, but I miss the fellowship here so much, and feel such a renewed awareness of my need of it, that just the joy I feel from being with you all is actually motivating me to keep pressing on with Revelation! Yay friends! 🙂
11. Read Revelation 12:5-6
A. What do you learn about the child from verse 5?
He is the One who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. He is protected by God.
B. How can you identify Him with Christ? (Psalm 2 may help)
Psalm 2:8-9-the nations are His inheritance, the ends of the earth His possession, v.9 “You shall break them with a rod of iron”.
12. Read the paragraph that begins The Condensation…up to “As the child”
A. When did Christ receive the rod of iron?
At the resurrection and ascension.
B. Why does this matter to us?
He is ruling now, not in the distant future.
13. What do you learn about the woman in the wilderness from Revelation 12:6?
She fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her and nourished her there for 1,260 days.
14. Read the last long paragraph that begins with “As the child” up to Warfare in Heaven.”
A. What does the wilderness represent in Scripture?
A place of refuge, protection, God’s shelter.
Campbell says it may simply be a place of His presence, whether on earth or Heaven, where believers are kept spiritually safe. God protects them against compromise and deception in the face of Satan’s attacks.
C. What do you learn about the numbers in this passage?
1260=42 months, the same as the picture in the temple and God’s period of protection
D. Who is the Babylonian harlot?
Wicked world governments throughout the church age, also lives in the wilderness
I didn’t fully answer 14.B)
I too have always loved imagining Jesus preparing a place for me, and I feel like that’s stated so clear in Scripture. But I also like the idea that maybe it’s both–He also prepares places of protection, here. I do feel a safety of His presence here, and even as you said Dee, that my family’s rejection may actually be part of my protection. And all that you said of His presence here–“It’s like a blanket we can wrap up in when the bitter winds blow”, HIs love for us…that IS a “place” for believers here, now.
So love the picture line of God’s presence as like a blanket that we can wrap up in when the bitter wind blows. I think Paige mentioned an illustration of her son looking for a blanket or something to wrap himself with even when Paige told him he was already well dressed up for the weather. I couldn’t remember the exact words.
Lizzy, love the joy you feel here. You bring joy and a wonderful perspective always!
3. Initial thoughts, Rev. 12:1-6 The conflict is here and is intensifying between God and Satan.
4. A. The first sight in heaven: the spectacular image of the woman, clothed with the sun, the crown of 12 stars on her head. she represents the nation, Israel.
I was glad for our interlude with the study of Romans. It has inspired me so much.
I was also glad for a study I did with Friends of Israel on What on Earth is God Doing? Satan’s Conflict With God that came at this same time. It has solidified my belief in the view of Revelation and the work that is ongoing with the nation Israel.
I want to do much of the study here but I will pass on the book explanation because it has a different point of view. I appreciate all of the opinions very much. The nation Israel has experienced much persecution and this is intensifying now. Agony refers to the persecution. This is experienced now by many Christians in other countries and is happening here as well.
5. A. Joseph’s vision Genesis 37- the 12 stars represent the 12 tribes of Israel
B. Other O.T. passages-Isaiah 7, and 26- Israel is pregnant
6. John 16:17-24
A. Jesus uses the analogy of a woman in labor and her anguish gives way to joy when her baby is born. The disciples are going to have to endure trouble when Jesus is no longer with them.
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, we have hope that the Spirit will comfort us until we rejoice in our heavenly home.
C. This gives me hope as I humble myself and forgive others who cause me pain, knowing that Jesus hears my prayers and that joy will come.
4 B. Before reading Campbell, what do you think this represents and why?
I put my thoughts about this in my answer above. I think it’s Mary giving birth and then being sheltered from evil for awhile until the return of Christ.
5. In Mystery Explained, in the chapter about Revelation 12, read the first three paragraphs under THE FIRST VISION all the way up to “The vision continues: And another sign appeared in heaven.”
A. How does Joseph’s vision in Gen. 37 help us identify who this woman represents?
The 12 stars represent the 12 tribes. She also represents the church.
B. In the 2nd paragraph, what other Old Testament passages shed light on the identity of the woman?
In Genesis, Eve must endure pain in childbirth.
C. The woman is in agony – what does this mean in the New Testament and what does mean for believers?
Agony means trial and persecution. This means we will face trials and persecution.
4. Read Revelation 12:1-2
A. Describe the first sight that appeared in heaven. A great sign appears – a woman clothed with the sun, 12 stars on her head, and with the moon at her feet. She was in labor.
B. Before reading Campbell, what do you think this represents and why? Not sure but the woman is maybe Mary? 12 stars represents twelve tribes. Not sure what the moon and sun represent – didn’t signs used to be in the stars? Like the blood moon at Jesus’ cruxifiction?
5. A. How does Joseph’s vision in Gen. 37 help us identify who this woman represents? The twelve brothers were stars in his vision. Therefore the woman could represent Israel.
B. In the 2nd paragraph, what other Old Testament passages shed light on the identity of the woman? Gen 3 – Eve’s seed. Then Isaiah passages about Israel being pregnant and a virgin giving birth to a son. (Why do these Isaiah passages not refer to Mary?)
C. The woman is in agony – what does this mean in the New Testament and what does mean for believers? It means trial and persecution. It means we will be persecuted.
6. Read John 16:17-24.
A. What analogy does Jesus make to a woman in labor for the disciples? Why does He does this, do you think? He makes the analogy of the sorrow that accompanies labor but then joy of purpose accomplished makes the mother forget the anguish (not all the way true but… kinda, wink.) so the disciples were about to enter the labor – the pain – when Jesus left but they would have joy when they saw him again and would forget the pain. Was this just the three days of death before resurrection? Or the time between Jesus ascension and the disciples’ own arrival in heaven? I think it was the later because they were persecuted and martyred. He is reminding them that the pain is necessary for the purpose and once the purpose has been accomplished there will be joy that outweighs the trials and sufferings of this world.
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, how might this analogy give us hope? There is purpose. There is an end. There is joy to come.
C. How might this analogy help you to pay the cost of not compromising or the cost of humbling yourself? God is the focus not me. Heaven is the punch line but even more important if I don’t allow the labor to do its job then I will inhibit the purpose. Women and babies have died because of labor gone wrong – including the mother being too tired or unable to persevere or push (haha) through. The focus isn’t the pain – the focus is the baby!
Jill — on the three days between death and resurrection: “Darkness” is counted as a night, and since the sky became dark at Jesus crucifixion, that was the first night, then Friday night and Saturday night.
6. Read John 16:17-24.
A. What analogy does Jesus make to a woman in labor for the disciples? Why does He does this, do you think?
Jesus equates the joy of the baby after the pain of childbirth to how painful it will be to see Him suffer but then the joy of being with Him and the Father later will overcome the pain.
Well, it’s a good analogy for a woman to understand, but most of the disciples were men…
I agree that seeing someone you love being hurt and then killed is difficult; painful. I guess it is something that happens to the body that can be forgotten with the spiritual experience of the end result?
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, how might this analogy give us hope?
Well, it might give us hope to know that something good will come out of the situation.
C. How might this analogy help you to pay the cost of not compromising or the cost of humbling yourself?
Standing up for my Christian beliefs, in the end, will be rewarded.
15. Read 1 John 4:4-6 A. What is one way, according to this passage, to recognize that the dragon is speaking?
The dragon speaks the world’s language, and the world listens. It is a message that the world likes, one that makes you feel good but never convicts. Looking back at v. 3-“every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God”. The world does not claim Jesus as Lord.
B. Give a few illustrations of the viewpoint of the world — for many Christians have been swayed!
Claims of having your “best life now”, or the prosperity gospel. The lie that a “good” God doesn’t send anyone to Hell.
C. How might you let your light shine brighter in the world?
I think it’s important to speak honestly about our trials and struggles, our pain. I don’t want to be one who candy-coats the Christian life for non-believers, trying to make it “attractive”. The world needs to know that we all suffer—and yet the hope we have because of Jesus’ love for us and His promise to protect us, the fact that the only battle that really matters has already been won.
My pastor has asked me to help with a ministry that responds to those in our community, not in church, who are seeking help. The ministry connects me via email with those seeking prayer, guidance…and I respond and try to encourage them to come to church. This past week I texted several times with a woman suffering great hardship, and at one point she asked me if our church teaches the Bible or just a compromised message for our culture. Thankfully my church is very gospel centered. But her question was indicative of what our culture spews around so much.
16. Read 1 John 4:7-12
A. Describe the kind of love we are called to have.
Sacrificial, Pursuing, Initiating, Unconditional love.
B. Can you think of a situation or person in your life where you could overcome evil with sacrificial love?
Oh Dee. Good convicting reminder. I’m trying!
7. Read Revelation 12:3-4 and describe the second vision.
John sees a dragon with seven heads and seven crowns on those heads, and ten horns, and the dragon is standing before the woman who is in labor, waiting to devour the baby as soon as it is born. John also mentions that the dragon’s tail drags down one-third of the stars and throws them to earth.
8. Continue reading under “Another sign appeared” up to “The Battle is Engaged”. What light do the Old Testament references Dr. Campbell gives shed on this vision?
In the OT, the dragon represented kingdoms, such as Egypt and Babylon, that tried to destroy Israel. Campbell writes that “the same evil spirit possessing Egypt resides in the latter days dragon” which is shown in the many references to the Exodus in Revelation. However, the dragon doesn’t just represent evil governments, but also is the very real force behind all human kingdoms that persecute the church. At any rate, this dragon stands in opposition to God’s people, the church, Jesus.
9. Dr. Campbell says the dragon “is in fact the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” How do the seven heads, ten horns and red color demonstrate this?
The seven heads and ten horns indicate the comprehensive and global nature of his power (the numbers 7 and 10 represent fullness or completion), and the red color is the same color as the harlot and the beast, named later in Revelation, as being drunk with the blood of the saints.
10. Read the paragraph that begins “the battle is engaged” up to “the condensation of Christ’s life”. How does the battle in heaven mirror the battle on earth?
Campbell says that the stars can represent both God’s people and angelic forces who represent those people. The battle in heaven mirrors the battle on earth because when the saints are persecuted on earth, their angels and God himself are pictured as being attacked. Campbell says that this one phrase (the dragon wants to devour the child) sums up all the ways the devil tried to destroy Jesus.
11. Read Revelaion 12:5-6
A. What do you learn about the child from verse 5?
The child born was a boy who was to rule the nations with an iron rod. He was snatched away from the dragon, up to heaven to God and to His throne.
B. How can you identify him with Christ? (Psalm 2 may help)
Since the dragon can represent evil nations or governments, Psalm 2 talks about the kings of the earth and the rulers plotting together against the Lord and against His anointed one. This child born of the woman in Revelation is God’s anointed one – Jesus. Jesus is the one to whom the Father will give the nations as His inheritance, and He will “break them with an iron rod” (v 9). In the psalm the Lord only laughs and scoffs at the futile plans of these kings and rulers, because He declares that He has placed His chosen King on the throne.
12. Read the paragraph that begins The Condensation…up to As the Child”.
A. When did Christ receive the rod of iron?
He received it at the very point of the resurrection and ascension….so He has it now; it is not to be given at some later date in the future.
B. Why does this matter to us?
Because Jesus is seated NOW at the right hand of the Father, and He has begun NOW to exercise His authority over the nations of the world. Campbell writes that “the fulfillment of His rule will come at the end of history, when He wields the rod of iron with absolute and consummate power.” I’m not sure I get this, because I believe that Jesus has absolute and consummate power right now, but for whatever reason He isn’t exercising it fully. I believe that because when He was arrested, He made the statement that if He wanted to, He could call upon a whole army of angels from His kingdom to defend Him right then and there, but He chose not to. For whatever reason, maybe because we haven’t reached the point of the final judgment and the doing away with of all evil, the rulers and nations of this world are still permitted to exercise their power in this world, for good or for bad.
13. What do you learn about the woman in the wilderness from Revelation 12:6?
The woman fled to a place in the wilderness where God had prepared to care for her for 1,260 days.
14. Read the last long paragraph that begins with “As the child” up to Warfare In Heaven.
A. What does the wilderness represent in Scripture?
Campbell says that the wilderness represents the place of refuge or protection, and the place where God sheltered the Israelites from the wrath of the Egyptians. Both Moses and Elijah took refuge in the wilderness, and God his David in the wilderness. John the Baptist and Jesus had encounters with God in the wilderness.
Question: if this is the biblical meaning of being in the wilderness, why do we hear the phrase “wilderness times” in our spiritual lives as meaning times of spiritual dryness or difficulty? And wasn’t it part of God’s judgment on His people that they had to wander around in the wilderness for forty years?
B. Dr. Campbell has a different perspective than I have always thought of the place Jesus has gone to prepare. What does he say? What do you think and why?
Campbell says that there is a strong parallel between the place prepared here for believers in the wilderness, and Jesus’ promise that He goes to the Father to prepare a place for them. So he says that Jesus might not be talking about heaven, but rather a place of His presence, whether here on earth or in heaven. A place where believers are kept spiritually safe. I don’t know for sure, but I have always believed that Jesus was talking about preparing our home for us in heaven, because He said this when He was telling His disciples that He was going to be leaving them and going to the Father, and telling them not to worry but that He would come back to get them when all was ready.
C. What do you learn about the numbers in this passage?
They are all symbolic. The number of days is referenced in Daniel in his prophecy of the time of tribulation. There are other references that Campbell gives that these numbers may be modeled after, but it is still all speculation.
D. Who is the Babylonian harlot?
The wicked world governments throughout the church age.
3. Read Revelation 12:1-6 aloud to yourself and share initial thoughts.
4. Read Revelation 12:1-2
A. Describe the first sight that appeared in heaven.
A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; She was with child with birth pangs.
B. Before reading Campbell, what do you think this represents and why? The woman is Israel and the twelve stars represent the tribes of Israel and God’s church; Possibly the rebirth of Jerusalem~ it also could describe the birth of Jesus and the beginning of Christ and His followers..
5. In Mystery Explained, in the chapter about Revelation 12, read the first three paragraphs under THE FIRST VISION all the way up to “The vision continues: And another sign appeared in heaven.”
A. How does Joseph’s vision in Gen. 37 help us identify who this woman represents?
In his dream, Joseph represents the 12th star in the crown, so the stars represent the 12 tribes of Israel and the woman also depicts the restored Israel of the end times.
B. In the 2nd paragraph, what other Old Testament passages shed light on the identity of the woman? Genesis 3:14-16. The woman represents, Mary, who will give birth to the One who will restore Israel; She also represents the faithful remnant of Israel..
C. The woman is in agony – what does this mean in the New Testament and what does mean for believers? Believers (The Church)will suffer the birth pangs before the second coming of Christ.
6. Read John 16:17-24.
A. What analogy does Jesus make to a woman in labor for the disciples? Why does He does this, do you think? When the woman in labor has pain, it is because her hour has come; when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world. Though we grieve at the crucifixion of Jesus; there is joy in His resurrection. After the ascension, we grieve that we do not see Him now; the suffering in the world increases, as birth pangs, as His return draws closer. When He does return, we will no longer remember our pain.
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, how might this analogy give us hope? We know that our Lord suffered so much more, for our sake. He gave His life as a perfect sacrifice, so all who believe in Him, gain eternal life and share His glory.
C. How might this analogy help you to pay the cost of not compromising or the cost of humbling yourself?
Jesus was perfect and sinless and so alone, as He walked through His suffering. It is so humbling to realize that He paid that huge price for each of us. For we are sinners, and cannot ever measure up to deserving the gift He died to give us. We will be in His light, in His love, in His joy for eternity. It is so hard to see this clearly when we are in the middle of pain, sorrow and loneliness. We need to keep on our on Jesus. I love that chorus: Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace. This is The Living Stones singing it. I needed this today.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTZtKoAwf0U
Lovely rendition of Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus — great hymn for our anxious souls.
Patti- I LOVE “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus…” that is one of my favorites! It’s funny because a few weeks ago as we ended our staff meeting at work, I asked my Pastor to sing it, he has a beautiful voice and I’m not a singer but I love the words to that!
Lizzy and Dee, I feel the same way. The words always speak to my soul. I love Alan Jackson’s rendition too.
3. Read Revelation 12:1-6 aloud to yourself and share initial thoughts.
I hear a reflection of Luke 1, where the angel says to Mary, “Behold, you will conceive…” her male child is Jesus, and there was a sign in heaven leading people to Bethlehem. Here the child is caught up to God- a picture of the resurrection? I also hear a reflection of Joseph’s dream where there are stars, sun and moon, representing his family. Here I imagine the 12 stars probably represent the 12 tribes of Israel. The dragon of course represents Satan.
4. Read Revelation 12:1-2
A. Describe the first sight that appeared in heaven.
A woman clothed with the sun, moon under her feet, crown of twelve stars, pregnant & crying out in labor pains.
B. Before reading Campbell, what do you think this represents and why? I first think of the woman as Mary being pregnant with Jesus and the sun being God there with her overseeing His Son’s birth. The moon under her feet reminds me of the earth being a footstool to God and the crown of twelve stars represents the 12 tribes of Israel.
5. In Mystery Explained, in the chapter about Revelation 12, read the first three paragraphs under THE FIRST VISION all the way up to “The vision continues: And another sign appeared in heaven.”
A. How does Joseph’s vision in Gen. 37 help us identify who this woman represents?
The sun, moon and 12 stars are a reference to Joseph’s vision. The twelve stars represent the 12 tribes of Israel, the woman depicts restored Israel of the end-times, identified in Revelation as the church.
B. In the 2nd paragraph, what other Old Testament passages shed light on the identity of the woman?
Gen. 3, Eve’s seed is prophesied to bruise the head of the serpent. The woman gives birth to the One who will restore what was lost in the Garden. Isaiah helps us see a background to the vision of the woman as the faithful remnant of Israel.
C. The woman is in agony – what does this mean in the New Testament and what does mean for believers?
This word in the NT refers to trial and persecution. We will face these troubles as we wait for Christ’s return.
6. Read John 16:17-24.
A. What analogy does Jesus make to a woman in labor for the disciples? Why does He does this, do you think?
As Mary labored in pain for Jesus birth, so the disciples bore pain contemplating Christ’s suffering on the cross prior to His resurrection.
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, how might this analogy give us hope?
We can remember that our trials are leading up to the return of Christ and everything being made new. Each believer is also given the promise that we are being fashioned to be more like Christ through our struggles here on earth.
C. How might this analogy help you to pay the cost of not compromising or the cost of humbling yourself?
Knowing the penalty Christ paid for our sin as He willingly went to the cross, though he dreaded it and we did not deserve it, brings great humility and willingness to suffer until His return. I’m only shocked at how often I need to remind myself of these things and the inability to do this in my own strength. I’m afraid the comforts in this world are such a distraction and deceive me into believing I don’t need God. It seems it would be easier to remember our need for Him in more humble circumstances .
oh Chris–wow. thank you for your honesty here, it convicts me:
“I’m only shocked at how often I need to remind myself of these things and the inability to do this in my own strength. I’m afraid the comforts in this world are such a distraction and deceive me into believing I don’t need God. It seems it would be easier to remember our need for Him in more humble circumstances .”
You make so many great points, Chris. I agree with Lizzy~ I really cannot do anything without Him. When I rely on the world, I try, I fail completely. He reminds me, He picks me up, and He alone brings me through each day.
You say something here that is so very true – that “the comforts in this world are such a distraction and deceive me into believing I don’t need God.” We all need this reminder, Chris.
7. Read Revelation 12:3-4 and describe the second vision.
A great red dragon, seven heads and ten horns, & on his heads, seven diadems (symbol of sovereignty)
8. Continue reading under “Another sign appeared” up to “The battle is engaged.” What light do the Old Testament references Dr. Campbell gives shed on this vision? Isaiah reveals this dragon to be Satan himself. Egypt is this picture trying to destroy Israel in exodus as well as Babylon in later scripture.
9. Dr. Campbell says the dragon “is in fact the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” How do the seven heads, ten horns, and red color demonstrate this?
The dragon tries to imitate Christ, seven & ten a picture of completeness in scripture show the global nature of his power. Red represents the blood of the saints. Christ is the true King who wears many diadems, the dragon is wearing false authority.
10. Read the paragraph that begins “the battle is engaged” up to “the condensation of Christ’s life.” How does the battle in heaven mirror the battle on earth?
Christ is now at the Father‘s right hand, exercising authority over the nations. Christians are left here on earth to battle evil and fight for salvation of all who remain to be witnessed to yet-the great commission must be fulfilled and our lives are to reflect Christ in this world, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
7. Read Revelation 12:3-4 and describe the second vision.
This is an event John witnesses also. It is that of a red dragon with 7 heads with crowns on each head. There are 10 horns on the heads as well. His tail sweeps away the stars in heaven and he waits for the baby to be born. He waits in front of the woman and plans to devour the baby when it is born. Ick.
8. Continue reading under “Another sign appeared” up to “The battle is engaged.” What light do the Old Testament references Dr. Campbell gives shed on this vision?
The dragon represents the evil kingdoms throughout history that have tried to destroy Israel. In the OT, it is referenced as a sea dragon (Pharaoh), and as Babylon. It says God will destroy it at the end of times. It is the evil that tries to destroy (persecute) Christians throughout history and even today.
9. Dr. Campbell says the dragon “is in fact the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” How do the seven heads, ten horns, and red color demonstrate this?
The dragons 7 heads and 10 horns represent the completeness of his reign. The 10 horns are like the 4th beast in Daniel. In that scripture, the 10 horns represent the 10 ruling kings who will be subdued by one king. The red color represents the harlot drunk with the blood of the saints. The crowns represent earth.
10. Read the paragraph that begins “the battle is engaged” up to “the condensation of Christ’s life.” How does the battle in heaven mirror the battle on earth?
Jesus was attacked in Earth, from being tempted by the devil up to the crucifixion. Some of His followers were/are attacked as well; some killed.
In the heavenly battle some of the faithful are attacked also.
Monday: The Woman in Agony
1. Read Revelation 12:1-6 aloud to yourself and share initial thoughts.
As soon as the great sign of a woman appeared, the sign of the dragon also appeared.
4. Read Revelation 12:1-2
A. Describe the first sight that appeared in heaven.
A pregnant woman ready to give birth. She was clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head.
B. Before reading Campbell, what do you think this represents and why?
Not sure but maybe the woman represents Mary, and the baby is Jesus and later she represents the church for the 12 stars represent the 12 tribes which would encompass people from every tribe, tongue and nations?
5. In Mystery Explained, in the chapter about Revelation 12, read the first three paragraphs under THE FIRST VISION all the way up to “The vision continues: And another sign appeared in heaven.”
A. How does Joseph’s vision in Gen. 37 help us identify who this woman represents?
The sun, moon, and stars were mentioned in Genesis 37. The woman represents restored Israel.
C. In the 2nd paragraph, what other Old Testament passages shed light on the identity of the woman?
The woman is the Jesus’ Bride, the church, Jerusalem or Zion.
D. The woman is in agony – what does this mean in the New Testament and what does mean for believers?
Persecution will happen to the people of God and we must be ready for it.
6. Read John 16:17-24.
A. What analogy does Jesus make to a woman in labor for the disciples? Why does He do this, do you think?
The woman in labor subjects herself to the pain because the birth of her child will bring her joy. Likewise, Jesus wants the disciples to know that they will be in pain when He goes away (His death) but it will give way to His constant presence with each of them through the Holy Spirit. Jesus will no longer be “limited” by physical presence. And also in the “not yet”, Jesus’ disciples will see Him again and there will no longer be any separation.
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, how might this analogy give us hope?
We know that this trial will only be temporary and there is joy awaiting us and also joy in knowing He is with us during the trial. Jesus went through the suffering of the cross but triumphed and so can we.
C. How might this analogy help you to pay the cost of not compromising or the cost of humbling yourself?
I do not live for this world and what I do now contributes to the hastening of Jesus’ return.
Bing, I love that you point out that Jesus will no longer be “limited” by physical presence. And also in the “Not yet”, Jesus’ disciples will see Him again and there will no longer be any separation. I cling to this truth.
This is priceless: I do not live for this world and what I do now contributes to the hastening of Jesus’ return.
Thank you! Amen!
Monday
3. Read Revelation 12:1-6 aloud to yourself and share initial thoughts.
Wow…this is like something you’d see in a movie! A pregnant woman, a dragon with 7 heads and his tail takes out 1/3rd of the stars. He stands before the woman while she gives birth waiting to devour her child…scary stuff.
4. Read Revelation 12:1-2
A. Describe the first sight that appeared in heaven.
A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head. She was pregnant, and crying out because of her labor pains and the agony of giving birth.
B. Before reading Campbell, what do you think this represents and why?
I think it represents Mary as it’s describing her giving birth. It also represents Israel, crown of 12 stars which we know is the church.
5. In Mystery Explained, in the chapter about Revelation 12, read the first three paragraphs under THE FIRST VISION all the way up to “The vision continues: And another sign appeared in heaven.”
A. How does Joseph’s vision in Gen. 37 help us identify who this woman represents?
The woman comes from Israel, which is what the 12 stars represent. In Genesis, Joseph is the 12 star out of the 11 he refers to.
B. In the 2nd paragraph, what other Old Testament passages shed light on the identity of the woman?
Isaiah (52:2; 54:1-6; 61:10;62:1-5) portrays Israel to be restored in the last days as a woman. She is spiritual Israel with a crown on her head. Crowns, in Revelation, represent the share of the saints in the kingship of Christ and their reward for persecution they’ve suffered. She reflects the glory of Christ (clothed with the sun). She represents both old and new covenant communities. Her seed and offspring is not only Christ, but all His followers.
C. The woman is in agony – what does this mean in the New Testament and what does mean for believers?
It refers to trial and persecution. I’m not sure how he gets that out of the verses he sighted…
“And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?””
Matthew 8:29 ESV
“And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.””
Mark 5:7 ESV
“When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.””
Luke 8:28 ESVL
“(for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard);”
2 Peter 2:8 ESV
We can expect trials and persecutions
Good for you for looking up those verses, Sharon. I’m not sure either esp the Matthew and Mark verses except that Jesus puts Satan into a panic and panic can lead to terrible acts?
Tuesday: The Great Red Dragon
7. Read Revelation 12:3-4 and describe the second vision.
A red dragon with 7 heads and 10 horns and on his heads 7 diadems! Wow, that means 49 diadems in one dragon? He must be really full of himself.
8. Continue reading under “Another sign appeared” up to “The battle is engaged.” What light do the Old Testament references Dr. Campbell gives shed on this vision?
The red color is the same color of the harlot and the beast drunk with the blood of the saints
7 and 10 denotes the global and comprehensive nature of his power
The dragon lives in the sea as pictured in Pharaoh of Egypt and Babylon-they become types or prophetic forerunners of the spiritual dragons of the last days-evil governments.
They are all blasphemous and rebellious imitations of Christ’s true kingship.
9. Dr. Campbell says the dragon “is in fact the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” How do the seven heads, ten horns, and red color demonstrate this?
See answer to #8
10. Read the paragraph that begins “the battle is engaged” up to “the condensation of Christ’s life.” How does the battle in heaven mirror the battle on earth?
When the saints on earth are being persecuted, their angels and God himself are being attacked.
Wednesday: The Child and The Woman in the Wilderness
11. Read Revelation 12:5-6
A. What do you learn about the child from verse 5?
The child is male and will rule all the nations with a rod of iron.
B. How can you identify Him with Christ? (Psalm 2 may help)
v. 2 Jesus is called the “anointed”. V.9 you will break them with the rod of iron referring to the Lord’s son. This chapter may also be talking about King David who is a forerunner of Jesus.
12. Read the paragraph that begins The Condensation…up to “As the child”
A. When did Christ receive the rod of iron?
At the point of Jesus’ resurrection and ascension.
B. Why does this matter to us?
It matters because right now He is already at the right hand of the Father’s throne exercising His authority over the nations of the world.
RADIOACTIVE for me-If Jesus is now exercising His authority over all nations, then whatever happens on earth is within His sovereign will. I can rest in peace and confidence that “no purposes of God can be thwarted” Job 42:2
This is so freeing for me as I look to the future. It is really one day at a time under Christ’s rule!
13. What do you learn about the woman in the wilderness from Revelation 12:6?
She is nourished by God for 1260 days.
14. Read the last long paragraph that begins with “As the child” up to Warfare in Heaven.”
A. What does the wilderness represent in Scripture?
The wilderness is the place of protection or refuge for God’s children whether it be the Israelites protected from Egypt and Pharaoh; Moses and Elijah; David; john the Baptist and Jesus.
Spiritual Israel (the church) will also be protected but will be delivered from it at the return of Christ.
My husband was asked by a church member who knew that he was preparing to go to the Philippines, “why would you go there? It is an unsafe place we heard.” My husband told me later how he replied to that question: “The only safe place we can be in is in the will of God.” This has always been a great comfort for me. During the height of the pandemic, my husband and I have encountered criticisms because we left the doors of our church open to anybody who would like to be inside the church. It is with gratitude that I look back at how God has protected us. I had to deal with my idol of approval and not be intimidated by people’s judgment and scrutiny.
The “place” could be the place of His presence, whether on earth or in heaven. I am not sure either but even with the mansion prepared for me, the presence of Jesus would make that mansion be even more important and exciting.
C. What do you learn about the numbers in this passage?
1260 is the equivalent of 42 months-the same time period of each of the seven series of judgments: same time frame from Jesus’ resurrection and ascension to His return
42 years of the Israelites in the wilderness
42 years of Elijah’s ministry of judgment
3 and ½ years of Christ earthly ministry
The church will be ushered into the heavenly kingdom in the same way the children of Israel entered the earthly promised land.
A. Who is the Babylonian harlot?
Wicked world governments throughout the church age
oh Bing–love this “whatever happens on earth is within His sovereign will. I can rest in peace and confidence that “no purposes of God can be thwarted” Job 42:2
From Bing:
It matters because right now He is already at the right hand of the Father’s throne exercising His authority over the nations of the world.RADIOACTIVE for me-If Jesus is now exercising His authority over all nations, then whatever happens on earth is within His sovereign will. I can rest in peace and confidence that “no purposes of God can be thwarted” Job 42:2
Oh Bing, Dee and Lizzy! I needed all of your comments so much this week! Yes, His will is sovereign! Thank you, Lord for these women, Your angels!
Sorry if this posts twice. I thought I posted but I’m not seeing it.
15. Read 1 John 4:4-6
A. What is one way, according to this passage, to recognize that the dragon is speaking?
Oh Dee. Thank you for this convicting reminder. Sometimes it doesn’t seem anything I do can “overcome” the evil, but as I type that I wonder. Maybe the “overcoming” doesn’t necessarily mean a change in the other person or a change in the outcome, but a change in me, in my heart, staying soft and eyes turned upon Him.
What a perfect ministry for your gifting, Lizzy!
Good thought about how overcoming evil with good can make a change in us.
Lizzy, I agree with Dee! Your gifts of help and mercy are so suited for this type of ministry that your pastor has called you to do. He is very discerning of how God can use you. And I hope that this brought encouragement to your heart. The very hardships you are facing right now are being used by God to encourage others-such an upside-down kingdom way of living. Here is a song to encourage you as sung by a group in South Africa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rChnJ15-mj0&t=3s “Living for Jesus”
Here is the 3rd verse:
Living for Jesus, wherever I am,Doing each duty in His holy Name;Willing to suffer affliction and loss,Deeming each trial a part of my cross.
Lizzy, your answer to 16 B reminds me of counseling my husband’s father, a pastor gave us in a situation we were in. He told us not to pray that the person change but that God change you and show you how to love with a sacrificial love, His love. The person never changed but we did. As you said “a change in me, in my heart, staying soft and eyes turned upon Him.” I thank the Lord that through you, He reminded me of that.
Dear Lizzy, I am saving this entire post. It is so meaningful to me right now. I feel the attacks from the enemy in so many ways, and I really think sharing our needs brings us closer together as a group. You are such a blessing to so many (me for sure!) and this sounds like such a beautiful way to minister to other women. This is golden to me: Maybe the “overcoming” doesn’t necessarily mean a change in the other person or a change in the outcome, but a change in me, in my heart, staying soft and eyes turned upon Him. Thank you for your sacrificial heart and your love of the Lord in all you do in life! We live in an area where we, as Christians, feel overwhelms with the culture of “me” centeredness. So many of our Christian friends and neighbors have moved out of state, but I am so thankful for those who are still here. The pressures are amazing! But I feel God’s refuge, even in that.
Wow Lizzy, your pastor has given you such an important ministry to help those who are wounded and hurting….immediately I think of Henri Nouwen and his example of being a “wounded healer”. Not that I am happy about the personal suffering you endure, yet I believe it comes across as fake when Christians act as if the Christian life is all “hallelujah and praise the Lord!” as if we live on some level where there are no trials or pain. I remember several years ago, at the church where a friend of mine attended, every Thursday evening they opened the church to anyone in the community who needed prayer. The pastor and a few others would be there and just wait to see who would come in. I think this is a wonderful fit for you and your gifts of compassion for others, to reach out to those in your community who are hurting.
7. Read Revelation 12:3-4 and describe the second vision. A dragon with red skin, seven heads and ten horns. His tail swept out a third of the stars and he sat in front of the woman to devour her child.
8. Continue reading under “Another sign appeared” up to “The battle is engaged.” What light do the Old Testament references Dr. Campbell gives shed on this vision? That the dragon “is the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” He has been influencing kingdoms and will influence kingdoms.
9. Dr. Campbell says the dragon “is in fact the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” How do the seven heads, ten horns, and red color demonstrate this? Red color= drunk with blood of the martyrs. 7 and 10 refer to “complete” so comprehensive and global power. The attempt to wear crowns and have power shows an opposition to God and His authority as well as Christ’s Kingship.
10. Read the paragraph that begins “the battle is engaged” up to “the condensation of Christ’s life.” How does the battle in heaven mirror the battle on earth? He says that the stars are symbols of our guardian angels and so they are injured as God’s people are injured or killed. He stayes a summary that parallels heaven’s battle and Earth’s battle: satan is trying to destroy God’s plan and reign.
11. Read Revelation 12:5-6
A. What do you learn about the child from verse 5?
The child would be a ruler and when He was born He was taken away by God.
B. How can you identify Him with Christ? (Psalm 2 may help)
He is taken away by God (away from satan), so He must be God’s child.
The viewpoint of the world
B. Give a few illustrations of the viewpoint of the world — for many Christians have been swayed!
Same-sex marriage
Tolerance, Be kind, Love wins movements
Progressive Christianity
I deserve to be happy
I can be a god myself.
C. How might you let your light shine brighter in the world?
To speak up and to take the opportunity to share my faith when the opportunity comes knocking even though at times my knees would be knocking as well! And I think follow one of the Benhams, to really listen and be engaged with people who are before me.
To love one another as brothers and sisters in Christ with a love that comes from a heart of gratitude to God and for what Jesus has done for me.
B. Can you think of a situation or person in your life where you could overcome evil with sacrificial love?
I am in a situation right now where I sometimes feel taken advantage of or others have unrealistic expectations of me. I must overcome the evil of selfishness, of what’s in it for me kind of thinking. I have to be realistic about what I can do, and I am praying that the Holy Spirit will help me discern how to love sacrificially.
I am also thinking that John was addressing Christians here so what to do with those who are non-Christians? The song “And they’ll know we are Christians by our love” comes to mind. And to be reminded that “while I was yet a sinner, Christ died for me”.
We love because He first loved us. Jesus Christ is the reservoir of love, and we can never exhaust His love and will give us everything we need to love sacrificially. Hallelujah!
Bing, I love that example of the Benham brother and the rather hostile passenger next to him. He was so kind and humble, as he listened to her and then ministered to her. As a pastor’s wife, I can imagine people have some huge expectations of you. I do not see you as being selfish; it is a difficult balance to shepherd sheep and to take care of your own physical and spiritual health. I will pray for the Lord to uphold you and give you wisdom and discernment, as you minister to others..
I also love this reminder: I am also thinking that John was addressing Christians here so what to do with those who are non-Christians? The song “And they’ll know we are Christians by our love” comes to mind. And to be reminded that “while I was yet a sinner, Christ died for me”.
Bing, Thinking of your situation where you can be taken advantage of. Will pray for right way to respond. I know this is a place that I sometimes find myself, we need God’s wisdom.
What stands out to you from the above and why? The dragon in the nativity video. I watched it with my granddaughters (age 4 and 6) I was concerned that it may be too intense for them, but it wasn’t. The 6 year old instantly recognized the dragon as Satan.
How might this be relevant to you right now in your life? To always keep in mind that we are in, and have always been in, a spiritual battle.
Amen, Dawn!
Dawn — that’s encouraging — was wondering how young to go. I think if I use Paige’s throwing up illustration at the resurrection and stop there it would work.
7. Read Revelation 12:3-4 and describe the second vision. Another sign appeared in heaven~ a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns; each head had a crown. The dragon swept away a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. He stood before the woman, who was about to give birth, so he could devour her child.
8. Continue reading under “Another sign appeared” up to “The battle is engaged.” What light do the Old Testament references Dr. Campbell gives shed on this vision? According to Campbell, the “dragon” in the OT symbolizes kingdoms trying to destroy Israel, particularly Egypt. In Exodus, God defeats Pharaoh. Isaiah 27:1 prophesies that at the end of history, God will again destroy the Egyptian dragon. The dragon is the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.
9. Dr. Campbell says the dragon “is in fact the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” How do the seven heads, ten horns, and red color demonstrate this? The seven heads and ten horns indicate the comprehensive and global nature of his power….The ten horns are those of the fourth, terrifying beast in Daniel’s vision: Daniel 7:7, 24. His red color is the same as that of the harlot and the beast; In Daniel 17:3-6 they are linked with the fact that the harlot is drunk with the blood of the saints. The crowns demonstrate that he works through earthly kingdoms. They are a blasphemous and rebellious imitation of Christ’s true kingship. I like that Campbell points out: In 19:11-16, Christ is pictured as the true King, who wears many diadems. The contrast between these two pictures shows the dragon’s false authority as he attempts to oppose Christ. I think this is a key point, as we watch what is happening in the world today. It is interesting that there are 7 continents in the world today.
10. Read the paragraph that begins “the battle is engaged” up to “the condensation of Christ’s life.” How does the battle in heaven mirror the battle on earth? The part about the stars being thrown to earth is a bit hard to understand, but I thought Campbell had a good explanation. The dragon’s attack wounds some of the faithful, as represented by their guardian angels. When the saints are being persecuted, their angels and God himself are pictured as being attacked. The dragons goal is: to devour the child the woman bore, Jesus. from the attack of Herod on the children of Bethlehem, to the temptation in the wilderness, to the attempt of the citizens of Nazareth to throw him off the cliff, and right up to the cross.
Isn’t the whole parallel between what is happening on earth with what is happening in heaven fascinating?
Yes, Dee! The parallel is really something! Thank you for doing this study. It has clarified so much and also given me more questions!
Monday
6. Read John 16:17-24.
A. What analogy does Jesus make to a woman in labor for the disciples? Why does He does this, do you think?
That just as a woman is suffering during labor, her pain will give way to joy when the child comes…it’s only for a little while that He will be gone, they will suffer but when He returns there will be great joy.
To prepare them for “the little while.” He’s not promising them a rose garden but He is giving them hope that they will see Him again.
B. When we suffer agony from persecution or trial, how might this analogy give us hope?
I go back to our study in Romans. Romans 8:18 “Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.”
C. How might this analogy help you to pay the cost of not compromising or the cost of humbling yourself?
That what I may be going through is just for a little while, knowing that He is with me now and will never leave me and that one day I will see Him face to face. That’s the day I need to focus on…what a day of rejoicing that will be.
11. Read Revelation 12:5-6
A. What do you learn about the child from verse 5? The child was a male, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron; the child was caught up to God and to His throne.
B. How can you identify Him with Christ? (Psalm 2 may help) She, Mary, gave birth to a son, Jesus. The child is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. The Christ, The Son of God. And her child was caught up to God and to His throne. The Ascension of Jesus. Jesus sits at the right hand of God the Father.
12. Read the paragraph that begins The Condensation…up to “As the child”
A. When did Christ receive the rod of iron? Christ received the “rod of iron” at the point of the resurrection and ascension.
B. Why does this matter to us? The Trinity=God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit (given at The Day of Pentecost) have authority over the nations of the world. The fulfillment of His rule will come at the end of history, when he wields the rod of iron with absolute and consummate power.
13. What do you learn about the woman in the wilderness from Revelation 12:6? The woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so there she would be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. Is this the protection of Israel and the Body of Christ, His Church during the tribulation? According to Campbell, it sounds like the place of refuge or protection, as where God sheltered the Israelites from the wrath of the Egyptians. Campbell gives examples of Moses and Elijah who took refuge in the wilderness. God hid David in the wilderness.
14. Read the last long paragraph that begins with “As the child” up to Warfare in Heaven.”
A. What does the wilderness represent in Scripture? From Campbell, In the Bible the wilderness represents a place of refuge or protection, primarily as the place where God sheltered the Israelites from the wrath of the Egyptians. Both Moses and Elijah, who together represent the church in Chapter 11 (of Exodus) took refuge in the wilderness. Campbell also references Isaiah speaking of a time at the end of history when God will bring His deliverance to Israel (His Church) in the wilderness. It sounds more like a refuge of protection than the traditional idea of “the middle of nowhere”.
B. But, indeed, it is a mystery.) I agree! This is a mystery! Perhaps there is a parallel of Jesus preparing a place for us in our heavenly home and He is also preparing an earthly place of refuge for us during the tribulation. This wilderness refuge could be a Spiritual protection for His followers, since they are spread out all over the world. Campbell’s point that “Spiritual safety means God’s protection (for our minds and spirits) from deception and compromise in the face of the devil’s continuous attacks.” I read Bing’s list (answer to question 15) of compromises that the enemy is trying to get believers to buy into. I find that your minds need a refuge of protection from things that twist scripture and turn it upside down.
C. What do you learn about the numbers in this passage? 42 months=the period of protection.
D. Who is the Babylonian harlot? The wicked world governments through the church age.
Tuesday
7. Read Revelation 12:3-4 and describe the second vision.
A large red dragon with 7 heads, 10 horns and 7 crowns on his heads. His tail sweeps away 1/3rd of the stars and thrown to earth. He is standing in front of a woman about to give birth, ready to devour the child.
8. Continue reading under “Another sign appeared” up to “The battle is engaged.” What light do the Old Testament references Dr. Campbell gives shed on this vision?
In Isaiah the dragon spoken of is Satan himself. He is an evil sea monster who is trying to destroy Israel and that evil monster is Pharaoh who comes out of Egypt. It was an evil spirit that possessed Egypt which brings understanding to the verses above from Matthew, Mark, Luke and 1 Peter. If it wasn’t for the evil dragon, which Eve gave into in the garden, there would be no suffering and Christ is dealing with that in those verses. The dragon resides in the OT Egypt and Babylon and are types of the spiritual dragon of the last days but yet he is very real. The dragon is the force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.
9. Dr. Campbell says the dragon “is in fact the very real evil force behind all human kingdoms which persecute the church.” How do the seven heads, ten horns, and red color demonstrate this?
His 7 heads and 10 horns give us understanding of his global power and reading Daniel 7:7 we see that power, devouring and crushing victims with huge iron teeth and trampling them. The red color is from being drunk with the blood of the saints.
10. Read the paragraph that begins “the battle is engaged” up to “the condensation of Christ’s life.” How does the battle in heaven mirror the battle on earth?
The devil tries to destroy Jesus by the decree Herod put out to kill Jewish babies, through the temptation in the wilderness, by the people of Nazareth attempting to throw Him over the cliff and up to the cross.
12. Read the paragraph that begins The Condensation…up to “As the child”
A. When did Christ receive the rod of iron?
He received the rod of iron upon the resurrection and ascension to heaven.
B. Why does this matter to us?
Because He has already begun to exercise His authority.
13. What do you learn about the woman in the wilderness from Revelation 12:6?
She is there for a short while (1260 days).
14. Read the last long paragraph that begins with “As the child” up to Warfare in Heaven.”
A. What does the wilderness represent in Scripture?
A place of protection from God.
He poses that the place may just be a place where God is with you. It might not be in heaven, but could be here on Earth. Believers are kept spiritually safe here. This means that He is taking care of business as we speak! That makes me feel good.
C. What do you learn about the numbers in this passage?
The wilderness is the same as the temple described in Rev 11:2. It corresponds to the same time frame 1260 days or 42 months.
D. Who is the Babylonian harlot?
This is the wicked world governments throughout the church age.
Wednesday
11. Read Revelation 12:5-6
A. What do you learn about the child from verse 5?
He was to rule all nations with an iron rod, snatched away from the dragon and caught up to God’s throne.
B. How can you identify Him with Christ? (Psalm 2 may help)
The Lord said He was His Son and would break the nations with an iron rod…smashed like clay pots.
12. Read the paragraph that begins The Condensation…up to “As the child”
A. When did Christ receive the rod of iron?
At the resurrection and ascension.
Wednesday
B. Why does this matter to us?
He rules now seated at the right hand of God and not some time in the future although, the fulfillment of His rule comes at the end of history, when He wields the “rod of iron” with absolute and consummate power.
13. What do you learn about the woman in the wilderness from Revelation 12:6?
It’s where God prepared a place to care for her for 1260 days
.
14. Read the last long paragraph that begins with “As the child” up to Warfare in Heaven.”
A. What does the wilderness represent in Scripture?
A place of refuge or protection.
The place that He prepares could be a place of His presence whether on earth or in heaven.
To think of an actual place/home is nice but I’d rather be “surrounded by His glory.”
C. What do you learn about the numbers in this passage?
It alludes to the 42 encampments of Israel in the wilderness. Modeled on the approximate 3 1/2 years of Christ’s earthy ministry and the 42 months of Elijah’s ministry of judgement, which the ministry of the church itself is patterned. These numbers are to be understood in a figurative sense.
D. Who is the Babylonian harlot?
The wicked world governments throughout the church age.
Sharon–I really love this “To think of an actual place/home is nice but I’d rather be “surrounded by His glory.”” Amen, me too!
15. Read 1 John 4:4-6
A. What is one way, according to this passage, to recognize that the dragon is speaking?
They speak from the world’s viewpoint.
B. Give a few illustrations of the viewpoint of the world — for many Christians have been swayed!
It’s a woman’s right to choose what to do with her body including abortion.
It is okay to be gay because God made everyone.
You must get a vaccine, developed with aborted fetus tissue, to protect others.
C. How might you let your light shine brighter in the world?
I have recently been convicted that there are actually others who believe in God at my school, and would potentially come to youth group if I reach out. An autistic teen actually began the conversation in class with me two days ago and because we were alone (the class had left to go to the library) I talked to him for a few minutes. I told him about our youth group at church. He is very well read and discussed God with me for a few minutes. It was pretty amazing. In 5 minutes we discussed the triune God, atheism, and my church! Hahaha! He is a pretty fast talker. And, he is in my astronomy class, so we fit in origin of the universe from a God perspective!
Your answer to C is so exciting!
Praise God, Laura! This is so exciting! Do you teach in a high school?
Yes I do Patti. It can be a discouraging place at times.
Yes, Laura! What an exciting opportunity! I wish you were close by and I can sit in your class.
I love you sweet Bing ♥️ 😘
Laura, this is so exciting to reach out to your students. I am praying for a youth ministry in our rural community. It is So Needed!
So true Shirley!
Laura–I love how God is using you! Love that you teach Astronomy from a Christian worldview!
14. I John 4:4-6
A. One way to recognize that the dragon is speaking: Every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. They speak from the world and the world listens to them.
B. The viewpoint of the world: Love wins! God is not a God who condemns; All lifestyles, all viewpoints should be tolerated…
C. How might you let your light shine brighter in the world? I would like to reach out to hurting people. I need to pray for God to show me
a way to reach these people and to listen, and act as he directs. I know a woman who is actively involved in a mission to assist refuges, especially Muslim refugees to love them and help with material needs and educational, in the name of Jesus. This is her unique wonderful mission goal. I am not called to do that, but I admire her work.
Lord, please show Shirley where you would have her minister to hurting people! (I know you’d be great)
16. Read 1 John 4:7-12
A. Describe the kind of love we are called to have.
We are called to love one another. If we know God, we know His love. We have His love inside of us because we have Him.
B. Can you think of a situation or person in your life where you could overcome evil with sacrificial love?
I don’t think I’m evil, but sometimes I don’t love my family members as I should. I could try to do better in that arena. I have a couple of months coming up where our immediate family members will be visiting and I have a chance to try to accomplish this 😉.
Thursday/Friday
15. Read 1 John 4:4-6
A. What is one way, according to this passage, to recognize that the dragon is speaking?
It’s according to the viewpoint of the world.
B. Give a few illustrations of the viewpoint of the world — for many Christians have been swayed!
Contemplative prayer. Critical Social Justice. All religions lead to God.
C. How might you let your light shine brighter in the world?
I don’t know, y’all have such wonderful answers! I just pray that whatever my day brings, whoever God puts in my path while I’m out walking my dog or going to the grocery store that He will shine through and I bring Him glory.
That’s actually a great answer, Sharon — if we can shine in the mundane activities of life it is huge.
17. Read 1 John 4:19-21
A. What strong statement does John make?
We love because He first loved us. If we don’t love each other (believers) then how can we love God? If we say we love God and really hate another whom we can see, we are liars. If we hate another we can see, how can we love God whom we can’t see?
B. Why does the dragon try to divide us as brothers and sisters?
To take control and push us away from God. Together we are stronger in Him.
C. What has been effective for you in the past to reconcile with an offended brother? Be specific.
Definitely taking the first step in forgiveness.
D. Is there an application for your life now?
There is an application in our (my husband and myself) lives right now. Unfortunately, I would have already stepped up and made the move with our oldest son, however my husband is very hurt. I am holding back until he might be ready, to be respectful and let him lead. I don’t think he will make amends though. He is very hurt. Then all I can do is to pray for peace between the two parties.
Well, prayer is a huge way to work. I remember when Paul Ryan was criticized for spending so much of government time in prayer, that he should “do something.” He said, “Prayer is doing something.”
Hi, there. I’m just popping in to comment on one question which started my mind churning and is a great comfort to me. I wish I had time to read each comment and interact with you all!
I really think that the “place” spoken of here can be both the wilderness that Campbell speaks of and a “home” that the bridegroom prepares. Wherever God’s presence is THAT is Home!
Campbell says that perhaps the “place” God prepares is simply the place of his presence, whether on earth or in heaven. His words remind me of Psalm 23 “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows”. I have frequently pondered these words and been comforted by God’s presence spoken of in this psalm; even in the presence of my enemies. To me that means God is there, even in this world (this wilderness) when enemies press in around me, seeking to destroy the roots of my faith and my walk with the Lord.
Campbell’s words about God’s presence in the wilderness are somehow a great comfort to me. When we visited Israel a number of years ago, I saw first hand the vast stretches of wilderness – dry, desolate, hot, no vegetation, seemingly lifeless. How can life be sustained in the wilderness? How can a person thrive in that environment – exposed to the elements and the wild animals? We each live in our own wilderness – exposed, vulnerable, lonely, often feeling forsaken. Yet God chooses to protect and rescue us in our own wilderness. How beautiful! How comforting!
Diane, thank you for sharing your unique perspective on the wilderness, and I am sure that actually seeing the wilderness in Israel helped to bring this alive to you. Yes, how can a person thrive in that (literal) environment? And how can we each live and thrive in our “wildernesses”? It can be a lonely place where we feel forsaken. “Yet God chooses to protect and rescue us in our own wilderness. How beautiful! How comforting!”
Diane — I’m so glad you popped in to say this. WOW. Home is where He is.
oh Diane, so good to see you, and I love this truth “God chooses to protect and rescue us in our own wilderness”
15. Read 1 John 4:4-6
A. What is one way, according to this passage, to recognize that the dragon is speaking?
The dragon speaks the “world’s viewpoint”, not God’s viewpoint. He speaks through people, and through the media. He is identified here as the spirit of deception.
B. Give a few illustrations of the viewpoint of the world – for many Christians have been swayed.
If there is a God, He exists to make one happy and rich. Suffering must indicate that there is something wrong with you or you don’t have enough faith. Pornography is okay – it doesn’t hurt anyone.
C. How might you let your light shine brighter in the world?
I believe the only way to do this is to love. That’s why Jesus said that the two greatest commandments are to love God and to love others as yourself. Everything else is summed up in those two commands, and nothing is more difficult to actually do. People really don’t care what I think about “issues” in our world today, and I can go round and round in circular arguments with people. It doesn’t even matter if I am right and they’re wrong, if I don’t love. Truly loving others is the hardest thing to do and it doesn’t come naturally.
From Susan: Truly loving others is the hardest thing to do and it doesn’t come naturally.
Reminds me of Philip Yancy: Grace is amazing because it isn’t natural, it’s supernatural.
Susan–think it’s time for you to write a book. I can’t count how many times your wise words have convicted me. “Everything else is summed up in those two commands, and nothing is more difficult to actually do”
