We’ll return to Acts next week, but now that we have spent 3 weeks on 3 who made up the first church in Philippi, I’d like to bring that knowledge to increase our understanding of just Philippians 1. No sermon, just the text and seeing it through new eyes.

Monday: Philippians 1:1-7
I have a sense of how Paul felt about the Philippians. There are some whom God allowed me to join Him in bringing them to Himself that fill be with such joy because of the fruitfulness in their lives. Their joy rippled out and brought others to Christ, who brought others to Christ. That’s what Paul is seeing happening in the Philippian church. The church at Philippi gets more praise from Paul than any other church.

Cheryl — I did a little research on your question on yesterday’s blog — circumcision. Since it had to be just for men, what about the women? It was as I thought that the head of the household (whether father or husband) covered the women. But also interesting because of the covenant referring to Abraham’s seed – the seed comes from the male organ but creates both males and females.
And this is a rabbit trail but women were often blamed for bearing only girls (queens were beheaded) yet it is the mail seed that determines the gender. 🙂

1. How did you experience the goodness of God this week?
Summer has been good this year! Not too rushed which is nice.
We took a trip to my husband’s home state of NJ to visit family. Sarah and her husband came to see the kids. She has started a nursing program (?!) and needed help with some homework. I spent an hour or so helping her. I felt like we were a “normal”mother and daughter. That was nice.
We met new “friends” at our family’s beach house last week who have young children and whom our grands could play with jumping waves and having fun at the boardwalk riding the rides.
Finally, my husband and I are traveling to Sweden this week to be with our son and his wife for a few days. We are taking her Croatian (long story!) cat back to them, and boy has that been an experience, getting everything all ready to go. Please pray for us traveling, but more so for my sister who will be watching Cooper and Grace while we are gone. That is my stress right now; that the kids will be well behaved and it will go well for her. My sister is 70 and the total opposite from me. I want it to run smoothly. Ugh! I have no control over this and it’s difficult. Thank you for prayers. I will be checking in, hopefully as I normally do, each day or so.

My daughter Annie and her two children came for a visit and it was a refreshing joy to have them here. I was tired, but only in the best of ways. Meaningful conversations and lots of laughter. Grateful. (It is too quiet now…)

How did you experience the goodness of God this week?
Dee, the picture above of Lydia, the slave girl, and the jailer brought tears to my eyes. What a wonderful echo of heaven where praise will always be on our lips and fellowship is among brothers and sisters from all nations! I do believe I will look at Philippians 1 in a new way this week.
Richard and I went on a day’s trip to Omaha, NE for his birthday and our 38th anniversary. Before we left, we committed ourselves not to talk about ministry and the world’s problems (I asked him to do a pinkie-swear lol). We will just enjoy each other’s company, and we will drive around the city for meals, desserts, and shopping (me spending the money and him driving our vehicle). We did a quick catch-up on something church-related, but we did not spend a lot of time on it.
God is the God of little things that concern us. He led me to a store where I found a special paper needed for a banner we were making for an appreciation luncheon for the school staff. It was a long shot, but there they were on a rack in the sale! First God wink!
I have often thought of buying a “lucky” bamboo plant, and I saw some fresh ones in a bucket at the last store we were at. But something prompted me not to; I thought I could always look for it some other time. When we got home, there were cards on our front porch and a potted plant. And guess what the plant was? A lucky bamboo! I could just see God smiling down on us and saying, “Surprise!” God wink 2 and then etc. later on!
And this morning I watched Tim and Kathy Keller do a gospel in life devotional based on Habakkuk 4:7 “…though there are no figs…grapes. sheep…cattle…yet I will rejoice in God my Savior.
The goodness of God is always there even when we are in difficult circumstances, and not only in the special paper or the “lucky” bamboo desires of our hearts.

Thank you all! I happened to have lunch the day after with the lady who gave us the bamboo plant. I told her that it was definitely a Spirit-inspired gift as she found it in our local little flower shop! She asked me why I would like one, and I told her the plant reminded me of my mother. She ate lots of thinly sliced tender bamboo shoots (edible and yummy when prepared correctly with coconut milk) when she was pregnant with me. Aaww-ugly cry.

How did you experience the goodness of God this week?
The goodness of God is always pouring out on me when I read the blog. I’ve been overloaded with grandkid care the last few weeks and though I love it, it wears me out! I’m finding it challenging to get my lesson done, but reading the comments from the last week always encourages me in my faith. I love how TLC says God does the work-faith is just another gift he gives us. Psalm 33:20-21 “Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust his holy name.
The Lord is giving me much opportunity to trust him this week. Drama unfolding in terms of marriage relationships, health, etc. in our family this week. Prayers appreciated for strength and wisdom as we trust the Lord through it all. I am especially seeking prayer for my husband as he is in a place where his guidance is sought after at church, work and home-and it seems all places are falling apart! Prayed over all of you this morning.
Nahum 1:7 keeps running through my head, “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble; he cares for those who trust in him.”
Father, You promise is we ask for wisdom not for our own lusts but to glorify You, You will give it. I ask that for Cheryl. In Jesus Name I pray.

2: Paul sends grace and peace to the church from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ-this always sounds so formal and yet personal when I hear it. A greeting and prayer. 3:he remembers them fondly 4: he loves them so & they give him joy in prayer 5: their faithfulness to the gospel is encouraging and brings joy to him 6:God’s work in them is sure to be completed-popular verse. 7: the faith of believers brings them together as one in joy and trial.

Verse 1 – It says it’s from Paul and Timothy, but then the tense changes and it says, “I am writing….”
He includes the elders and deacons…as if they aren’t holy?
Verse 2 – He wishes everyone grace and peace from the Father and Jesus Christ.
Verse 3 – He thanks God each time he thinks of these people.
Verse 4 – He prays with joy for their requests.
Verse 5 – He recounts how they have helped him spread the Word.
Verse 6 – He states how God has worked through them and how He will continue until Jesus comes back.
Verse 7 – He says he feels their relationship is special, as they have managed through while he was in prison and in their defense and spreading of the Gospel.

They were from many walks of life but they had this one belief. Jesus Saves. They worked together and were a “family” because of this.

Oh, I am so thankful that God brought our lives together. Dawn has sweet memories of baby sitting Sally, when you lived on Queen Anne near the church. I am so thankful for Dawn too. We are having a precious time together.

V2. Paul expresses warmth, unity and love in the greeting of grace and peace.
V3. Paul is lovingingly thanking God for these believers.

V5. The believers Paul is praying for, have been actively supporting his ministry from the beginning. They have not bailed out, when he was imprisoned. They understand persecution of believers, yet they are still supportive.
V6. Paul is confident that God will support and perfect the work He began in each of them, starting with their salvation, which will continue until He returns and perfects it. They are partners with Paul and Timothy, even in their imprisonment, continuing to spread the gospel message, in spite of fear of their own persecution.

Dee, you are right up there at the top of my list! Don and Marguerite Blair, who we met the first Sunday we attended a church in San Jose, CA. Don was Superintendent of Schools in the Berryessa School district in San Jose, California. This man was instrumental in directing us to Seattle Pacific College. We knew that was from God! Their daughters, Kathy Mayhle and Barbara Johnson (Dee : Clarice’s daughter in law) introduced us to the church we attended for many years and where I met Dee. All this started because a pastor in San Jose, brought a leaflet to our door, inviting us to the Easter Sunday service at his church.) I had been praying desperately to find a church there….Only God.

We have been in Alaska since last Friday and have thoroughly enjoyed our time here so far. The beauty and the vastness that we have seen is a reminder of the amazing God we have. When I sit and look at the mountains, flowers and glaciers I can’t help but think of the verse in Romans… “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”

He professes his love for the believers in Philippi “with the compassion of Jesus Christ.”
His prayer is that the people will overflow with their love for others and keep growing in their knowledge.
He wants them to understand the truth (what is important) about life and how to live pure lives until Christ returns.
He reminds them to always remember their salvation in Christ; their character that comes to them from Jesus. They are to reflect this character to others to bring glory to God.

Paul acknowledged Timothy and himself as servants of Jesus Christ. I wondered if Timothy wrote the letter by hand for Paul. We are holy (!) when we are in Christ.
v. 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Both grace and peace can only come from Jesus.
v. 3 I thank my God every time I remember you.
Yes, I, too, Paul, have people to thank God for.
v. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy
I think of you ladies, and I smile.
v. 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
Our partnership with each other comes in different ways. I think of my Christian friends who continue to do God’s call in their lives
v.6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
One of my favorite verses, especially when I think of loved ones who have strayed and am waiting on God for them to return.
v. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.
There is such winsomeness in knowing that as partners in proclaiming the gospel, we share the joy of God’s grace among us.
I went with Richard to one of the clients the Ministerial Alliance of churches is serving. I rejoiced with him as he witnessed to the lady and how she hugged him as she thanked him for our help.
Wonderful to see the Lord working in your lives!

Foundational to the three people was their introduction to Jesus. And I think that is where it should start. Paul and Silas had Jesus, and they gave Jesus to these believers. As Tim Keller said, the gospel is the unifying factor among Christian brothers and sisters. It does not matter who you are, what you do, what you have been; Jesus leveled the playing field for all.

Tuesday: Praying Philippians 1:8-11

God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.
It is amazing how God can give us the ability to love others with Jesus’ affection. They are not even blood relatives, but are closer to us than if they were.
Love is more than a feeling; I have found that the longer I love Jesus, the deeper my love grows in knowledge and insight. Discernment of how to meet other people’s needs is important. Discernment test: Is it best, pure, blameless, righteous? Wow!
I thought of Charity Gayle’s song, “I speak Jesus”. We speak Jesus to every situation that needs discernment. All for the glory and praise of God.

Lord, I pray this passage over my extended family in the Philippines as we all share the burden of a loved one who is in dire financial need.

Lord, let my life reflect Jesus’ love for all. You promise that my love can grow in knowledge and depth of insight. And let me never forget that fruit can come only through Jesus Christ. All glory to you, God, our Father!

Addressing bishops and deacons shows there was distinct organization and maybe a much larger group of saints than when Paul was last in Philippi. 2. Grace and peace come from God. 3. The very thought, or mention, of the believers at Philippi produced thanksgiving in Paul 4. He prayed for them with great joy 5. He was thankful for their fellowship from the FIRST DAY they believed until the present time when he wrote this letter 6. The Lord had opened their hearts and granted them salvation, and the Lord would continue to work in their lives until Jesus returned. 7. Paul loved the Philippians, because I have you in my heart” . They loved Paul and supported him in his mission to spread the gospel and sent support to him even when he was imprisoned. Paul says they are partners with him.

Tuesday: Praying Philippians 1:8-11
5. Make at least 6 observations or comments on this passage. 1. I’m always in awe of the depth of Paul’s love as stated in vs.8; he loves and longs for their presence with the tenderness of Jesus Christ. 2. Paul’s prayer for them is that their LOVE may abound more and more. We know from 1 Co. 13 that NOTHING that is done or said without love is in vain/useless. 3. The overflow of love would lead to greater spiritual knowledge and insight 4. As we grow in the Lord, greater spiritual insight, we can approve/test things to discern that which is excellent for us to do/say. 6. This all leads to a life of love, a pure heart and humble walk. 7.This is a righteous life in Jesus, who is beome or righteousness (2Co.5:21), to the glory and praise of God.
6. Use it to pray for someone you love who is a fairly strong believers. Do it here. Father, You are the one who created us. Your love and faithfulness is never ending. Thank You, Lord. I pray that Barbara would grow in love, that it would overflow in her heart and life. I pray that the knowledge and insight she has would become a living expression in her life. May the Holy Spirit guide all her thoughts and actions to Your paise and glory. In the name of Jesus, amen.

All my Bible study and learning mean nothing without the love of Jesus in me. All the fruits of righteousness, of the Spirit, are summed up in Jesus. Jesus. Thank You for the Bible, godly brethren, godly authors, and woshipful music, which all help me grow in grace and the knowledge of You. May my life bring praise and glory to You. 1. In verse 8, Paul calls on God as his witness (as if in a courtroom) regarding his affection for these believers as it is like the affection of Christ-spiritual. Verse 9, he professes praying for the love of the believers to grow with all knowledge and discernment-unlike secular love-so that they may approve what is excellent in order to be pure and blameless for the day of Christ-his concern is for their eternal calling/reward. In verse 11, he prays for them to be filled with the fruit of righteousness (fruit of the spirit?) that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God-as we should all hope to have our good works yield God’s praise.

To all the saints on this blog today, silently or typing, with God as my witness, I long to meet with you here with the affection of Christ Jesus. Wednesday: Philippians 1:12-18 How Suffering Advances the Gospel
8. How did the suffering of Paul and Silas in Acts 16 advance the gospel?
The gospel was shared personally to people of various means (Lydia, the slave girl, and the jailer) as well as publicly, that all could choose whether to believe. Paul says his imprisonment let it be known through the whole imperial guard “and to all the rest” that he was there for Christ. Also, the saints were more confident and bold to speak the word without fear because of his imprisonment. When one is brave, it leads others to do the same.
9. How has your suffering advanced the gospel?
I have not always responded well to my suffering, but I hope I am learning to receive it with grace and faith in the Lord Jesus. I did not always know that suffering was an avenue for advancing the gospel. I would say most of us would not willingly enter into suffering for Christ if we knew it was coming, but I can say that I find myself bold for Christ now when I am faced with someone opposing the gospel. At this time, my suffering has only been of a personal tragedy sort and my witness about how God has used this, is hopefully encouraging to someone who is seeking a way through their own suffering.

Paul lets people know that his experience has served to advance the gospel, so that everyone in his proximity knows his imprisonment is for Christ. He also witnesses to the fact that brothers in Christ have been made more bold by his suffering and defense of the gospel. He makes note that some preach the gospel from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. He says the latter do it out of love, knowing he is there to defend the gospel. The former preaching out of rivalry hope to afflict him in his imprisonment (!). In the end, Paul is glad for the gospel to be preached whether for good motive or bad-wow.
11. What stands out to you the most and why?
What stands out to me is how truly selfless Paul is to even be glad the gospel is preached whether in pretense or in truth-whether those preaching seek to help him and promote the gospel or hurt him and promote the gospel. Paul doesn’t sit and feel sorry for himself in prison-and I’m sure there is much to be sorry about as the conditions could not have been pleasant in the least. His only goals are to promote the gospel and encourage his brothers in Christ. Oh that I could see my life this way.
That has also stood out to me, Chris, and puzzled me, and yet God in His mercy works through fallen vessels.

8. How did the suffering of Paul and Silas in Acts 16 advance the gospel?
Acts 16:25 tells of Paul and Silas singing praise in the middle of the night in their dark jail cell, in their unfair and painful circumstances. Singing? I imagine that the jailer very possibly heard them singing and that caught his attention. Probably not what he usually heard from prisoners in the middle of the night. Did their singing to God possibly bring on the earthquake?
It reminds me of 2 Chronicles 20:21-22 where King Jehoshaphat put singers at the front of his army. As they began to sing praise to God, God defeated their enemies.
When I hear the back story to some songs and I discover that that song was born out of suffering, I pay more attention to the song and sometimes someone else’s suffering can provide a bond with a fellow believer and an encouragement to keep trusting Him.

Wednesday: Philippians 1:12-18 How Suffering Advances the Gospel
8. How did the suffering of Paul and Silas in Acts 16 advance the gospel? Paul and Silas sang, prayed, and praised the Lord while in prison (open wounds, stocks, etc), which bore witness that they were DIFFERENT. That drew the attention and curiosity of the prisoners, guards, and head jailer. The jailer took them into his home, where Paul preached to all there. They were saved and each person then could witness to others.
9. How has your suffering advanced the gospel? I don’t know that it has except as I have told my story of how the Lord met me, and was faithful, during those times.
10. Make an observation or comment on each verse. 12. Paul wants them to understand that his imprisonment hasn’t stopped the gospel, on the contrary it has FURTHERED the gospel. 13. Everyone in the Praetorium (guards, judges, etc) knew of Paul and had heard of his witness (either in person or through others). 14.Some believed and spread the news of Jesus, others spoke of Jesus out of envy and slandered Paul (I can only imagine that they wanted recognition). 16.This second group of people were not sincere (wrong motive) and wanted to make things worse for Paul. 17, The first group of believers has sincere love for the Lord (and for Paul), and they knew that Paul was ready to defend the gospel whatever happened. 18. Paul rejoiced and would continue to rejoice because the gospel was proclaimed, no matter what was the heart motive or consequences to him.

11. What stands out to you the most and why? Paul’s humble attitude. He spoke to anyone around him about Jesus, and he did not promote himself. He did not have to be the center of attention but rejoiced when others preached Jesus. “For me to live is Christ…”

I think people have seen our love for our grands via suffering because of our daughter and her bad choices.

Verse 13 – He says everyone there knows he is in chains for Christ (he notes, even the Palace guard).
Verse 14 – The people are speaking about Christ without fear because Paul is modeling this with his life.
Verse 15 – There are some people who are not preaching Christ with honor, rather with jealousy and rivalry. There are others who are preaching truth about Christ.
Verse 16 – Those who preach truth have a love for Paul and his preaching about Christ.
Verse 17 – The ones who preach otherwise are selfish and are not sincere.
Verse 18 – Paul says either way works, as Christ’s message is still being taught.

Joy in the midst of sorrow! This is difficult, even with the day to day events we encounter. To think he could be this positive being tortured in jail is encouraging.
I agree! Paul was given a gift-his time was short. Some days for us can be so hard-but…when we can get perspective and look back on the hard times, sometimes the Lord allows us to see his hand at work for a greater purpose. Laura, in you I see softening and desire to obey. I see grace for your daughter and sacrificial love for those grandchildren. I see a love for your husband and desire for the two of you to be one spiritually in Christ, not just physically here on earth. I see also, your desire for “others” to know Christ-your students and co-workers. I also see your heart for the church-your church in particular right now as you are trying to stop division and unite believers for Christ. Your testimony is larger than it seems to you! I know I’m only seeing a glimpse here online of the burning passion you have for the Lord in your part of the world. Do not grow weary, friend. The battle is long, but you are winning with the sovereign Lord who goes before you.
We have had a rash of drama here with relationships and health concerns. My 20 year old son remarked that “everyone has bad stuff happening.” I replied with, yes, but in these times I find the Lord provides opportunity for growth and healing that we never knew was possible. Like the flowers grow after a good soaking rain, we can also grow when the Lord gives us our storm.

Chris, thank you so much with the encouraging words. We are with our son and his wife (who asked me for a Bible a couple of years ago). I’m not sure she is so “interested” now. I am praying for touching her in her own way, as we have been studying here, whatever that is now. She is an artist and I know a bit about art as well. Her partner in work is a believer that she describes as “religious.” I spent a bit of time explaining to her the difference between religiosity and the Gospel yesterday. I think it’s interesting that she ended up at a business with a partner who is a believer! They have only lived here about 7 months. He has artwork of Christ and the Holy family around his shop. I suspect he is a Catholic, although he is Swedish and I think they are Lutheran here more so, than Catholic.
I am definitely going to pray for you and the drama with relationships and health. I love the analogy of the rain and the flowers! So true. Growth during the storm.

Thursday: Philippians 1:19-25 Hard Pressed Between the Two
12. Read through this passage and explain why Paul was hard pressed between two choices.
Paul is between two great desires: going to be with Christ and staying to fight for Christ. Being with Christ removes all the evils, temptations and trials of this life, but remaining to fight for Christ by helping those believers who remain brings glory to God and furthers his kingdom.
Paul’s expectation of remaining for them proved true, for he was not beheaded until 35 years after Christ’s resurrection.
13. What does it mean, in your life, to say “For to live is Christ?”
My life living for Christ means largely a battle of the mind, mine own and those around me. The world, the flesh and the devil are constantly working against us and we need to be fighting with the armor of God daily. Specifically, stopping myself and those believers around me from believing the lies of the enemy, using the Word.
14. What do you look forward to after death? Be specific. The end of all misery and trials in this life and the JOY of being with Christ. The old hymn, “In the Garden”, comes to mind. The trials in this life make me grow weary, but I press on to support those I love- a little like Paul I guess, but I couldn’t begin to compare my struggles with his, though I might compare my love for the Lord.
***prayer request: my daughter’s husband is hopefully entering a treatment program today at 3pm eastern for alcoholism. Please pray this goes favorably (pray against despair) and his treatment brings God glory. Also, prayers for her 4 young daughters and wisdom for us adults to help the children through this. Paul has the affection of Christ in his longing for the people of the church of Philippi. His love is unselfish and deep. He desires for the believers to have the Christian love that is grounded in knowledge and understanding. He desires all to have a sincere moral and ethical life style that is righteous and productive in the eyes of God. We are all to live in a way that glorifies God.

Lord, I bring my sisters in Christ, those on this blog and those absent, to the feet of You, dear Jesus. Thank You for each of these lovely women of God, who worship You Lord. I was born to spread the Word to all. Sadly, I didn’t know this (even though I was a Christian) until much later in my life. I have done a much better job in the past 15 years and plan to continue to reflect Jesus to those around me. This is what I perceive as to live for Christ.

This one is much tougher for me. I can’t comprehend what heaven will be like even though we are told in Revelation. Peace with my soul. No pain. No division or “groups,” rather only Jesus followers. Oh yes, and a new body! 5’7″ and 130 pounds please 😉

18. We often don’t think of suffering for Christ as a privilege, but it is. Think of one way you or someone you love has suffered for Christ and how God brought good from it. I don’t think I have personally suffered for my faith, except perhaps in relationships to a degree. I subscribe to Voice of the Martyrs and the stories from that ministry always astound me. Those who suffer typically choose to not run from their persecutors but try to stay and spread the gospel to all who will hear. Typically, more are saved due to their courage-as Paul says in Philippians 1:28…not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God.”
I can hardly read those stories from Voice of the Martyrs, but it certainly puts our suffering in perspective.

Others observed their courage, and felt more confident. The cause of Christ became known throughout the prison to guards and prisoners.

Even when the gospel is preached with the wrong motives, and selfish ambition, it is spreading the Gospel. God can bring good out of tragedy.

I love the implication of Paul’s exhortation to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel. No matter what happens, the Philippians are going to stand firm in one spirit for the faith of the gospel. Again, the gospel unifies us all.
Without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.
Standing firm in one spirit-I thought of the illustration of the warrior stance in Ephesians 6. I think it is called a turtle formation. We cover one another when we stand side by side, and the enemy cannot penetrate our fort. God is the One who saves us, and those who oppose us will be destroyed.
For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,
since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
Suffering is part of being a Christian and a member of His body, the church. We are not excluded from suffering in this world, but we have Christ.

Paul commanded the spirit out of a slave girl earning money for her owners by fortune telling. When the owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, Paul and Silas were seized, beaten, and put in prison by the magistrates.

20. What’s your “God Shot” or take-a-way?
It was good to be reminded of a few special things from Philippians. One year a while back, I memorized the book of Philippians; I still can remember most of it. Philippians 1:6 is a prayer for my daughter and for so many others who have crossed my path. Philippians 1: 21-24 is my husband’s life passage. And I love Philippians 1:3-4, 7a when I pray for others. And of course, there is Philippians 4:6-8!
My God shot is that He is sovereign over all my circumstances. He is in charge of my time here on earth, and I am grateful for the fruitful labor He has given me. He is my joy and my strength.

I’m not sure I can point to just one thing that has helped me most, but if I have to choose then it is the community of vulnerable believers who are steadfast in their faith, true to the gospel and loving to all who are here. I think because we are all seeking to love God and love one another this blog has become a place of refuge to those seeking comfort and truth-like the Palace Beautiful in Pilgrim’s Progress! The Palace is described as being built by the Lord of the hill to give travelers a safe place to rest, learn and gain strength for the next hard parts of their journey. When Christian first arrives, he talks with the 3 virgins who speak with him about his past, his hopes and why he left home. They show him history of the Lord and proof of past deeds. He is outfitted with armor so he can stand strong against future evil. Then on the roof on a clear day, they show him the distant beautiful mountains of Emmanuel’s Land. Yes, Dee, this blog to me is like the Palace Beautiful. I come here to rest, hear truth, and gain strength for the next battle and see glimpses of what is to come in eternity. This is where I find joy for the journey. It is well and good to study our Bible and pray, but without the community of other believers our journey is a lonely and difficult one.

My take away: In Philippians 4:13, Paul says his famous line-“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Verse 14 says, “Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble.” He goes on to say how in the beginning, no church entered into partnership with him, except the Philippians. He receives much joy and comfort from the other believers and this in turn causes him to desire to encourage them. The gospel is all about Jesus dying for us and the Christian life all about us sacrificing for the gospel. This blog has been a picture of the gospel in a small way as we each speak into one another’s lives by taking the time to comment and pray for one another, encouraging one another in our faith.

My mom suffered in her life when my dad died. She was 48. She never remarried. She was a Godly woman and I learned how to study well (it’s where I get my study of the Bible) from her. She taught a Bible study for 35 years. She modeled what it looks like to be Christ-like. She was probably the most Christian person I have ever known. She was always taken care of in her life until her death. I benefitted from her suffering.
