At the end of this week, I will tell you what happened when I spoke last Tuesday to 200+ International students through the ministry of Bridges. You were a big part of it through your prayers. Here are a few of their sweet young faces. They are from all over the world. This year, my 9 are from Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Romania, Russia, China, and Mongolia. They come to us, learn our language, and are so eager to be with us. Bridges works with Bible believing churches, but we never have enough people to cover all the requests for host families. The harvest is ripe but the workers are few.

If you have been here a while, you’ve heard me tell about my dear friend Twila, who moved away about 6 years ago. I miss her so — we made a good evangelist team, praying for one another, being a tag team, encouraging one another, rejoicing in watching God move. I was reminiscing about some of our adventures and texted her: “Don’t you think Christians who are evangelistic have more fun?”
She replied: I would agree that Christians who share their faith have more fun! Having a close relationship with Jesus is, obviously, a wonderful thing. But I’ve grown the most when I see Jesus answering our prayers for unbelievers…and when I see unbelievers coming to Jesus and growing in their walks with Him. There is nothing to excite the soul more than watching God at work in someone just getting to know Jesus!!
We text and call, though we are miles apart now, sharing our adventures. One of the women coming to her “Beginners’ Bible Study” is married to a man who was unhappy about her attending this study. After the last session of that study, she came home, and he asked:
“So, are you finished now?”
“No! I am going to do this until I die.” 😊
Then I told Twila about a conversation I just had with a mutual pickleball friend. I was afraid to share with him, but sensed God was wooing him. I prayed in the morning: Lord, if you want me to share the gospel with “Jacob,” allow me to be alone with him for a little while. (Not easy at crowded pickleball!) As I was leaving pickleball for the day, thinking it had not happened, I met Jacob walking down the hill, returning to pickleball. “Did you forget something, Jacob?”
“My car says it doesn’t detect my key — and I can’t find my key, though I have looked everywhere. I need a ride.”
“I can do that!” God had so clearly answered my prayer, I knew I had to talk to him. I’ll share more of the story another time, for it is in process. He is so gracious, and Jewish, and hugged me yesterday. I do sense an openness. Please pray. (God knows his real name — I think it is already engraved on His hands.)
What is more exciting than joining God in His plan to take the gospel to the ends of the earth?
When fear causes us to pull back like a turtle into our shell, or to run to our idols and block His presence, we miss the abundant life God promised. I loved what our own Cheryl wrote last week — that “the good life is being in His presence.”
I hope to encourage you this week to be sensitive to His Spirit, ready to obey, whether it is dying to an idol, practicing hospitality to someone in need, or sharing your faith! Be alert to those He is wooing, pray boldly, and lift your sail when the wind starts blowing, for it will, and you will be in for a ride!

Sunday:
1. Share a time, hopefully recently, when you sensed the wind of the Spirit and had an adventure. It could be in evangelism, or simply obeying something hard, and experiencing His blessing and power. (And, or, share a way God blessed you this week.)
2. What stands out to you from the above and why?
Monday: The Approval of Man vs the Approval of God
3. Read Mark 8:31-33
A. What does Jesus tell his disciples in verse 31?
B. How does Peter react in verse 32?
C. What does Jesus say and how does He explain Peter’s main problem?
D. When you are afraid to obey God in something, how might Jesus’ words to Peter help you? Be specific.
4. Read the following and share what helped Jesus to obey:
A. Hebrews 12:2
B. Isaiah 53:11 “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…”
5. Share something hard for you to obey. Practicing hospitality? Sharing your faith? Giving to the needy? Spending time with the Lord in prayer of in His Word? Denying yourself food or entertainment you know isn’t good for you? Write down what lies the enemy whispers to you, and THEN write down God’s truth.
Tuesday: If You Cling To Your Life

6. Read Mark 8:34-38
A. What does he tell the crowd and his disciples in verse 34?
B. What danger does Jesus warn about to the person clinging to his life, fearing denying himself, according to verses 35-36?
In John Ortberg’s Soul-Keeping, he tells of how his mentor, Dallas Willard, made him see this passage differently. The soul is the only part of us that lives forever and controls the heart, mind, emotions, and body. Ortberg (and I) had always thought that when Jesus said, “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” that He meant those wrapped up in worldly power and pleasures were headed to hell, but Willard said, “Jesus is talking about a diagnosis, not a destination… To lose my soul means I no longer have a healthy center that organizes and guides my life. I am a car without a steering wheel…a crash waiting to happen.” When we neglect our interior life, we are living at odds with the way God made life to thrive in the universe. It is not surprising that the inhabitants of this planet, including many who claim the name of Christ, are experiencing increasing anxiety, depression, and despair. Their souls are disintegrating.
C. What do you think about Dallas Willard’s interpretation and why?
D. What does Jesus say in verse 38? What does this mean?
Wednesday: Caring for Your Interior Life
Last week, Cheryl Ann wrote this in response to the question: How did you experience the good life this week because of your relationship with the Lord?
As I have continued reading a Psalm each morning (plus Keller’s book and Spurgeon’s Treasury of David), my eyes, heart, and spirit have been lifted. Most mornings I’ve been able to sit on my front porch while I read, seeing the beauty of the countryside. To me, that is the good life, being in His presence.
As I was reading Cheryl’s post, I was on my own porch. I can never catch these pelicans flying by with my camera for they appear and disappear so quickly, but this is very close to what startled me when I looked up, courtesy of a pexel’s photo. The wonder of creation and the wonder of the Word together is indeed water to a thirsty soul.

7. How are you caring for your interior life? You may not be blessed with a view from your porch as Cheryl and I are, but is there a place you can walk or sit that pours beauty into your soul? How can you see beauty right where you are? (Keller says the Lord loves cities more than the country because He loves people more than trees. 🙂
8. What is one evidence of a person who cultivates his interior life according to Luke 6:45?
9. What are your most frequent topics of conversation? (I know it depends on whom you are talking to – -but what naturally comes out of your heart? Be as honest as you can be.)
10. What are some ways you get the most from the Word?
Thursday: What a Ride!
Joining the Lord in His plan to reach the world is the most exciting part of my life. You were with me last Tuesday through your prayers. And brothers and sisters in Christ were among the students, praying, cheering me on. We are together in this, holding on for dear life, giving one another the look that says, “Can you believe we get to be a part of this?”
I certainly had interference, but God prevailed. I knew there was resistance from the pastor of the church to my speaking, for I believe he is a progressive pastor (progressing beyond the cross and the blood to simply loving others), but he didn’t come that night, and I was thankful. He told the Bridges leader that they were an “open church.”
I was also told that the students often whisper and look at their phones during the time the speaker is talking, but they thought they had a solution. They would ask them to leave their outside tables and come in the church, just for my talk, to quiet them down. But they didn’t want to go in — they wanted to linger and talk at their tables outside. So the leader of Bridges finally gave up and took me outside. After just my opening sentence, a holy hush came over them. It was the presence of the Lord. It was completely quiet and eyes were on me for the whole 8 minutes! There were brothers and sisters among them who were praying, smiling, and encouraging me. Thank you sooo much for praying. I want to encourage you, if there is a ministry where you live, to get involved with International Students.
When Steve and I were baby Christians, there was a couple at our church I liked, so we invited them over. We had no idea they were missionaries with ISI (International Students Incorporated), but we have been supporters ever since. After all, these internationals have come to us, have learned our language, and want to know us! They are often the cream of the crop, and if they come to Christ, they go home as missionaries. One of my students is from Ukraine, and her family is suffering. They are “Chreasters” (Going to church on Christmas and Easter.) Many of my students are Muslim. This week I plan to give them “Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus,” a great true story.
11. What reasons can you see for reaching out to Internationals? Have you? If so, share.
12. What reasons can you find in the following Scriptures:
A. Leviticus 19:33-34
B. John 4:35
C. Ecclesiastes 11:6
13. To encourage your sisters and me, share one of your most exciting evangelistic adventures here, if possible.
Friday: The Fertile Fields

As a young writer, I interviewed 100 believers who had come to know the Lord as adults. I was looking for common variables. I found that most had come through the influence of a friend. I also learned what research confirms: the most fertile fields are young people and those going through a traumatic time. Those hearts are softer. I thought this week about how many of the international students fall into both categories. I’d like you today to ponder the “fertile fields” around you, pray, and then obey!
14. What children or youth do you have in your life or path? What about those facing suffering? Ask the Lord how you could better reach out to them, either evangelistically or in discipleship. Be still before Him. Then write what He shows you here. (As your sisters write out what He shows them, pray silently or write your prayers on our blog.)
Saturday:
15. What changes do you anticipate in your life due to this week’s study?

This is not real recent for I tend to let the fear of man hold me back. (My husband on the other hand always looks for opportunities to share the hope of the gospel….. so he has more adventures.) I sensed the wind of the Spirit last January when I was working as a weekend host at our Ronald McDonald House. I have been a weekend staff person for the past 27 years, working about nine weekends per year. Through those years I have sensed, at times, an “assignment from the Lord” and he gives me the courage to speak up. So last January there was a young Amish family with two small children and a tiny premature baby in the hospital. This beautiful couple were eager to talk with me for they were in the process of leaving their Amish community – a very painful process for all involved. They had come to realize the freedom that Christ offers and were ready to leave the legalistic bonds their community and family held. What a breath of fresh air this couple were to me and others at the Ronald McDonald House. My husband shared much scripture with them and answered some of their questions. I invited them to our small church and they began coming, for they ended up staying at the Ronald House for three and a half months while their premature baby was in the hospital. I often take my guitar when I work on a weekend and so we spent a little time singing/worshiping together. (In the end, the young husband asked me to help him select a guitar to buy and I gave him a couple of lessons before they moved to another state.) We have been staying in touch since they moved away and they plan to visit next month. What a surprising gift of mutual friendship this has been.
Lastly, there is a beautiful and contemplative song that has been encouraging me very much these past couple of weeks. It is called “Your Eyes” by Sandra McCracken and Ben Shive. Here are a few of the lyrics followed by a link to the song:
” I see my soul turning sadder and sweeter,
heavier, lighter,
grayer and greener…..”

Nila, what a beautiful story of “for such a time as this”. This couple wouldn’t have had the encouragement to be obedient to God if it were not for your love and presence in their lives. Thank you for the song that you shared. Sandra and Ben write beautiful songs. And I thank god for using your gift of playing the guitar.
Such a wonderful story of the Amish couple and you. And very sweet song.
Nila, I agree with Bing. What a lovely story of Christ’s love and relationship. Your love of God is so evident and I love how you share your gift of music so generously. Music always speaks to the soul. I know this couple felt your love of God and of them! This is what life is all about! What a blessing that you and your husband developed a life long relationship with this precious family. Thank you for sharing this song.
Thanks for sharing about God’s work in the Amish couple’s lives. And the song. Beautiful!
Thank you for your testimony of God working through your life. Beautiful. Looking forward to hearing the song when we get out of urgent care.
Nila, what a blessing you and your husband were to this family. In a time when their life was so hard, you softened the journey be your kindness and love.
Nila, I so appreciate this song! It really spoke to my heart. I love this kind of music. Music always speaks to my soul.

I believe I have mentioned the challenges we are currently facing at our church, as well as the fun I have been having with my novice garden for three years. (Smile.) The latter has really been a source of joy for me despite the sweat, the labor, and the bugs (!). Never have I envisioned gardening as a possibility, though I wished in the past that I had my mom’s green thumb. Over the last two weeks, God has provided opportunities for me to reach out to my neighbors, community, and friends through this garden. My plants have been prolific except my zucchinis (squash bugs need their food also), and I have given them away. My zinnias were as plentiful as well, allowing me to make bouquets for people who come to mind. This week, a neighbor who walks regularly stopped by again to visit while I was out in my garden. I picked some flowers for her to take home, and she told me about her health challenges. This is the third time I was out at different times of day when she was walking by. The Lord is telling me to follow through.
Dee, for this week, I will remember this: I hope to encourage you this week to be sensitive to His Spirit, ready to obey, whether it is dying to an idol, practicing hospitality to someone in need, or sharing your faith! Be alert to those He is wooing, pray boldly, and lift your sail when the wind starts blowing, for it will, and you will be in for a ride!
2. What stands out to you from the above and why?
Your introduction above excited me so much, Dee, as I reflected on the past few days here in our household. The last sentence of my answer to Question 1 is what stood out to me. I feel the wind blowing and look forward to the ride with the Holy Spirit!
The challenge that my husband and I have been having at our church concerns a couple who are contemplating a move. The wife and I are meeting on Tuesday, and I pray that I will be “sensitive to His Spirit, ready to obey, whether it is dying to an idol, practicing hospitality to someone in need, or sharing [my] faith!”
Thank you, Dee, for this lesson!
Love that your gardening is a way to make a bridge with neighbors!
Me too!
We were so hopeful for our little garden but didn’t go very well. What a blessing you are able to share in the abundance.
Amen to Dee and Laura. Praying for your Tuesday meeting.
Bing, You bless us with your honesty and your heart for God and others. 💕
Thank you to all. His presence, as our Cheryl here said, is the most important to us as we give of ourselves to Him and to others.

I had to start school this week and my husband is alone with the kids for several days until they begin school too. A young friend who has 4 kids, offered unexpectantly, to take the grands to a local park and then lunch. It was so kind of her! Also, two women at my church who know the grands well (they taught them in preschool) prayed for me and are helping us in court next week. Thank You Jesus for the support system you have given us!
2. What stands out to you from the above and why?
I love the quick answer to your prayer! God is using you right now, in this moment, to spread His word to others in your sphere. It is sweet! I want to be in that moment too! I do think I have tasted it (sort of) with my friend. Even though she is a believer, she is beginning to want to know Christ. It gives me a “heady” feeling, that I might be a part of helping someone see and know Him!
I surely see the Lord moving in your life, Laura!
Love that you are having help with your sweet grandkids as you start school, Laura. Praying for your court meeting next week.
Laura, Love hearing how God is at work in your life. 💕
Yay, for help and praying for next week.
Laura,
I love how the Lord has provided help with your grandchildren. We have had two grandchildren and their single-dad son living with us for five years. (ages 5 and 7) A neighbor invited both kids to spend the whole afternoon once this summer. Her kindness was much appreciated.
May our God give you much mercy in court next week.
Laura, He is the giver of gifts who makes our hearts sing, isn’t He? Thanks for sharing.
How sweet for you and your husband and the grands to get the help you needed and for next week.
Sunday:
1. Share a time, hopefully recently, when you sensed the wind of the Spirit and had an adventure. It could be in evangelism, or simply obeying something hard, and experiencing His blessing and power. (And, or, share a way God blessed you this week.) – I may have mentioned this, but, I am following a devotional app put on by a couple I got to know from YouTube and his son and met the couple in person at the campground they own. It’s a great app and the devotionals are 5-6 minutes long. I started just commenting on the devotions put on the app first and John the gentleman I met said I need to do a devotional and then his son said the same. I prayed for God to be with me and give me something to say and he did. I’m now uploading devotional videos to the app at least once a week. This has been a work of God, because I am definitely a behind the scenes kind of person. But God knows and im trying to be obedient and say yes.
2. What stands out to you from the above and why? – I love how God is giving you the opportunities you ask him for. I also agree with Twila how exciting it is to see the eagerness of a new believer. What a joy it is to see how on fire they are.
That’s great about the devotional Julie!
Amen to Laura, Julie!
Julie, I love what you are doing on the devotional! Can we visit it on line? May God continue to encourage you using your gifts this way.
Julie,
I would love to hear your contributions to this devotional.
Julie it’s so neat to hear you are sharing what God is teaching you. A good thing. 😊
Julie, oh, how beautiful this is! Yes, can we listen to your devotionals, too?
Ladies, the app is called God Family Country and it has a black background with a cross. There are many good devotionals, but you can pick and choose when you use the media link within the app and then scroll down to speakers and pick the ones you want to listen to. It’s a great app that is just getting started but has been a blessing to many people already.
Julie, this is wonderful. I just downloaded the app. I will listen to your devotionals. Thank you for sharing this.
3. Read Mark 8:31-33
A. What does Jesus tell his disciples in verse 31?
He explains how He will suffer at the hands of the leaders and die, but be raised 3 days later.
B. How does Peter react in verse 32?
He tells Jesus to stop speaking these words.
C. What does Jesus say and how does He explain Peter’s main problem?
He calls for Satan to leave. He says Peter is seeing only from a human view, not God’s.
D. When you are afraid to obey God in something, how might Jesus’ words to Peter help you? Be specific.
I suppose I can trust God to help me see it “His” way? I’m not sure. If I were trying to explain to someone, as you did Dee (explaining to the pickle baller about your weight), I could ask the Holy Spirit to give me the words and trust that He would speak through me to the person with whom I want to share His message. I’m not sure I believe in my heart though, that, that would really happen. I have prayed to have the words in the past, but I stumble and fail. I remember trying to explain Jesus to a friend/colleague once (with respect to her daughter who wanted to be a boy) and it failed miserably. I am not sure I prayed before it though 🤷🏻♀️.
4. Read the following and share what helped Jesus to obey:
A. Hebrews 12:2
We are to keep our eyes on Jesus and not get distracted.
B. Isaiah 53:11 “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…”
He knew the efforts of His obedience meant that we would all be saved.
Oh Lord, it is difficult to stay focused and to not let the comforts of life take over. These days we have way too much to eat and drink, and we really don’t need it. We only need You.
“And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:19 NLT
“The Lord will not let the godly go hungry, but he refuses to satisfy the craving of the wicked.”
Proverbs 10:3 NLT
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
Matthew 6:33 NLT
The topic you tried to discuss with your friend on a scale to 1 to 10 is a 10 in difficulty. So don’t let that discourage you. Often just listening, repeating back what they have said so they know they have been heard is a great 1st step.
Sunday:
1. Share a time, hopefully recently, when you sensed the wind of the Spirit and had an adventure. It could be in evangelism, or simply obeying something hard, and experiencing His blessing and power. (And, or, share a way God blessed you this week.) Oh we had such a beautiful baptism service yesterday at the lakeside park. So many amazing testimonies of God working in peoples lives. Two younger people spoke of the Lord speaking to them and miraculous changes in their lives. So many being saved from drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, etc. Praise God for the work he is doing in our church and our little community group. One in our group specifically was baptized and two fathers of those in our group.
2. What stands out to you from the above and why? “Be alert to those he is wooing and pray boldly.” This stands out to me as I see the Lord impacting peoples lives around me at church and in my family. The Lord is doing so much ❤️. Now as my husband has developed a complication with his leg which has a rod in it from a surgery after breaking it 5 years ago, I’m wondering what the Lord has in store for us today. He is unable to go to work because he can’t bend his leg enough to get in a vehicle. Instead of feeling fearful (well maybe a little), I’m starting to think of this as an adventure, though it may be difficult. I recently listened to another YouTube video from Elizabeth Elliot where she talks about God’s sovereignty and how even the hard things are ordained for us and we can rest in his plan. She has such a great way of putting it so to give one ease about the future.
Encouraging words.
Thank you Chris.
Chris, I resonated with what you said about being a little fearful. So much good going on, that at times I find myself bracing for what “bad” thing may happen next! Ugh! lies from the enemy. Thankful we have the word to remind us, “Do not fear!” Thanks for sharing another YouTube video from E. Elliot.
Yes! The difficulties we face are ordained for us and we can rest in the Lord’s plan. Easy to say, hard to live! We must keep his Word in front of us.
Chris, What a wonderful day with the beautiful baptism service! So wonderful to see these miracles. I will be praying for your husband’s leg issue. These kinds of surprises are so hard. I pray that your received help in the ER.
This is gold:Yes! The difficulties we face are ordained for us and we can rest in the Lord’s plan. Easy to say, hard to live! We must keep his Word in front of us.
1. Share a time, hopefully recently, when you sensed the wind of the Spirit and had an adventure. It could be in evangelism, or simply obeying something hard, and experiencing His blessing and power. (And, or, share a way God blessed you this week.)
I have sensed God’s wind of the Spirit in two relationships, one with a Seattle friend, and one with my new friend, and her daughter. My Seattle friend, I have known for many years and she never wanted to talk about God. She had a prestigious career and most of her friendships were with associates. Her life and friendships changed dramatically when she became ill and fragile. She and her husband moved into my neighborhood and over the years we became close friends. It began with telling her that I would pray for her, and then I noticed she was responding to that. We now speak on the phone at least once a week and support one another and pray for one another. I send her scriptures and she loves them all and is now talking about the Lord. I so agree with you and Twila, There is nothing more exciting in life than watching a soul grow closer to God and all glory goes to Him.
I am praying for my dear friend, and her daughter here for this relationship has just started. Her mother had very bad experiences with religion, but she knows there is a God and her daughter’s very sweet and contacted me herself via text after I had sent a meal. The dear family has had a year of huge tragedies, loss of a father and then, a husband(and father) within the last 6 months.
2. What stands out to you from the above and why?
The most important thing in this life is to keep our eyes on Jesus, be in God’s Word, and show others the way to have an abundant life in Jesus.
Love this lesson, Dee! This is how I want to spend the rest of my life, serving Him.
Amen to this: Joining the Lord in His plan to reach the world is the most exciting part of my life. and this: There is nothing to excite the soul more than watching God at work in someone just getting to know Jesus!!
Wonderful words here Patti, of how small seeds of kindness and friendship can grow.
It is His kindness that leads us to repentance . So sometimes our small kindnesses towards each other will lead us to necessary, life-giving frequent repentance.
Patti, So good to hear about what God is doing and how he is using you in the lives of your friends. God has you right where He wants you. His plans for us are for our good and the good of others too.
Patti, I do believe that God has you in the right place(s) all the time. From E. Elliot: “We can rest assured that whatever gifts are appropriate to the job god wants us to do will be given to us.” We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. Romans 12:6
Patti, what a great testimony of just what a little bit of mustard seed faith can do. When planted it will grow. Love this.
Thank you all for the encouragement. I love you all.🙏💕

—God blessed and answered prayer in a significant way this past week. The details are too many but God moved and provided a buyer for Tyce and Bethany’s house. All of a sudden there were two buyers and they both made fair offers for it. God orchestrated the details in some amazing ways and it seems the one couple that wanted it and are now the buyers had been praying about it. They are not locals but from another town and none of us know them or have met them yet. My prayer all along was that God would glorify Himself in the sale and He has done just that.
2. What stands out to you from the above and why?
—What a great question you asked about Christians who want to share their faith and have hearts to see others come to Christ.
“Don’t you think Christians who are evangelistic have more fun?” And I so agree with the last part of Twila’s response “……There is nothing to excite the soul more than watching God at work in someone just getting to know Jesus!!” It really is one of the greatest joys we experience as believers ourselves when we see someone come to a saving faith in Jesus. The Christian life really isn’t just about us but it is about loving God first and then the result is we will love others and want them to know Him.
Bev, what a wonderful answer to our prayers for your son, as described in Ephesians 3:20! Praise God! Let me know when you are in Lincoln the next time!
Bing as soon as we head down that way I will check in with you. 👍🏻
Oh YAY! I was just praying for a buyer for them this past week. Great news, thank you God.
Thank You Lord! The house sold! Yay!!
Praise God for this wonderful answer.
Bev, What great news about the house sale for Tyce and Bethany. God truly glorified Himself! Praise His Name!
Monday: The Approval of Man vs the Approval of God
3. Read Mark 8:31-33
A. What does Jesus tell his disciples in verse 31?
The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.
B. How does Peter react in verse 32?
He pulled Jesus aside and rebuked him.
C. What does Jesus say and how does He explain Peter’s main problem?
“Get behind me, Satan!” The enemy was talking to Jesus through Peter. Jesus told people that he was more about human concerns than God’s. The NLT Bible version translates “concerns” as the human point of view. The Message translated it as “you have no idea how God works.”
D. When you are afraid to obey God in something, how might Jesus’ words to Peter help you? Be specific.
I will be talking to a friend/sister in Christ about a difference in our points of view about a significant matter in our church. I have all these doubts/prideful thoughts floating in my mind about how to “correct” her thinking. The words of Jesus here are helping me seek God’s perspective. He has also shown me what attitude I should take toward this sister. Philippians 2:6-11; Colossians 1:10-20; Micah 6:8; Galatians 5:22-23; Philippians 4:8
4. Read the following and share what helped Jesus to obey:
A. Hebrews 12:2
“…fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
The joy (us!) set before Him.
B. Isaiah 53:11 “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…”
Because God could not look at Jesus with the world’s sin laid on Him, He turned away from Jesus. But after the cross, He will see God’s face again, knowing His death has satisfied the Father.
All of the above can be hard for me, and the root of that is my unwillingness to deny myself.
Hospitality? It takes time and effort (lie: I can be spending time and effort on other things I love). Truth: Leviticus 19:32; Proverbs 11:25; Luke 10:27; Romans 12:13; Hebrews 13:2; I Peter 4:9-11
Sharing my faith? (lie: I don’t want to look foolish. I am not prepared.) Truth: Matthew 28:18-20; I Peter 3:15; the examples of Peter and Paul in Acts 10 and 15; the obedience of Philip with the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:26-40.
Spending time in the Word? (lie: you have other things to do today to be a success. Look at your calendar!) Truth: Psalm 1; other Psalms; Proverbs
Dee, this was a great experience for me to look for verses that refute the enemy’s lies!
I love all the work you put into this exercise and the many verses of truth. You are right! We can all struggle with these things and I am not being honest with myself if I don’t recognize this. I know that there are times I don’t feel it’s worth sharing my faith as I have felt the person who needs the Lord is “too far gone!” If that isn’t a lie straight from the devil! Lord forgive me and give me your eyes to see these dear ones to you who need your love to change. They are truly living in misery and no one is too far gone for your love to reach them.
I love this entire post, Bing. Thank you for the detailed scripture references!
Just an extra comment from me: I am home alone (hah! not the movie), and reading through all the comments. I noticed how God has blessed our different regions of His “map” involving us. All of us share how God is at work in our lives and how He has graciously loved and used us. I envision his light popping up on the “map” or His presence (thanks, Cheryl Ann!) crisscrossing across the universe! Wow-these thoughts are definitely not from me!
“Shine, Jesus, shine, Fill this land with the Father’s glory
Blaze, Spirit, Blaze, set our hearts on fire
flow river flow Flood the nations with grace and mercy
Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light!
Bing, I love this post 💕
I love this idea of the Lord blessing each of us on His map and I love “Shine, Jesus shine”
Amen to Bev and Chris! Love all of this Bing. Shine Jesus Shine! And Cheryl’s “staying in His Presence.” So important! And staying in His Word. You are so right, Bing: This blog is a wonderful map lighting up the love of Jesus spreading and iron sharpening iron!
This makes me think of little Christmas lights twinkling, lighting up the houses in neighborhoods. A single bulb is tiny, but put them all together and you have a blaze of light. Thanks, Bing. I am a twinkling bulb!
I wish I could draw! It is a beautiful image in my mind right now, all the twinkling bulbs lighting up for Jesus! Let’s go, ladies! Plugged into the source of our light, Jesus! “Lighting up for Jesus”!
Monday: The Approval of Man vs the Approval of God
3. Read Mark 8:31-33
A. What does Jesus tell his disciples in verse 31?
—He told them the awful things he was going to suffer at the hands of the religious leaders and that he would be killed. But he also told them that 3 days later after his death he would rise from the death. It says he talked openly with them about it. I still wonder at the reason why they didn’t seem to hear the part about the Resurrection.
B. How does Peter react in verse 32?
—Peter took Jesus aside and thought he should reprimand Jesus for saying such things.
C. What does Jesus say and how does He explain Peter’s main problem?
—He reprimanded Peter for what he was saying which philosophically was worldly thinking that Satan promotes and not what God had in mind. Peter had a worldly agenda to see Jesus reign as a King on earth. Power over the Romans was on his mind. God had the plan of salvation on His.
D. When you are afraid to obey God in something, how might Jesus’ words to Peter help you? Be specific.
—To see things only from a human perspective or point of view always comes up short. God has a spiritual point of view that is above and beyond what we think.
I don’t see myself as afraid to obey God. Obeying Him always results in what’s best.
I’m more afraid of being thick headed and not listening well so as to follow His lead in my life. I feel like sometimes I muddle along and see possibilities after the fact.
4. Read the following and share what helped Jesus to obey:
A. Hebrews 12:2
—“…..Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.”
—When I read this I always think of the very first time I listened to Paige Brown’s teaching. She talked about how “we” were the joy set before Him. It was because of us He endured the Cross. So much meaning in all of that.
B. Isaiah 53:11 “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…”
—“When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.”
Isaiah 53:11 NLT
—Jesus would have known these scriptures from Isaiah very well. The promise of redemption and righteousness were an unbelievable and worthy prize for his terrible suffering.
—I just don’t have an easy answer for this. I don’t see myself as someone who struggles to do things for God but I struggle much more in being someone for God. Having a right heart doesn’t come easily when my husband isn’t kind to me or my children fail me in some small way or friends disappoint me. Even harder in this mean spirited unkind world we are living in. Maintaining godly character to practice love towards others can be a challenge. The enemy wants me to self indulge and feel sorry for myself. We are constantly bombarded with the message of we deserve it or deserve better. I desire to be more thankful and more grateful in all things at all times. God has poured put his abundant grace in my life by saving my soul and giving me the wonderful hope of wonderful things to come. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.”
Psalms 118:29 NLT
Dear Bev, your struggle resonates with me. It is so hard to respond well to others who are unkind. I’ve been listening to the song suggested this week by Sandra McCracken, Your Eyes. This part in particular makes me think about how when we truly understand his love for us and believe it-that’s when we will have compassion and love to withstand the hurts in this life and respond well to them.
Time is a pickpocketLifting our loveWrenching and rending And there we stand stunned But our tears are bottledOur tossings are countedLosses all caughtTo be brought back compoundedOh how you’ve suffered and oh what you bearAnger and anguishCurses and prayersBleeding heart-HealerPerfected by painHeaven’s high veil torn To welcome us in
Love this honesty and wisdom from Bing:
All of the above can be hard for me, and the root of that is my unwillingness to deny myself.
Yes That comment resonated with me. Bing nailed it!
Amen to Dee and Bev, Bing!
3. Read Mark 8:31-33
A. What does Jesus tell his disciples in verse 31? He foretells his suffering, death and resurrection.
B. How does Peter react in verse 32? Peter rebuked him.
C. What does Jesus say and how does He explain Peter’s main problem? He says, “Get behind me Satan!” He explains that Peter is not setting his mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.
D. When you are afraid to obey God in something, how might Jesus’ words to Peter help you? Be specific.
Often when I am nervous to share the gospel, it’s because I am thinking about myself- what will they think of the things I have to say and how will I be seen in their eyes. When I write this out it seems silly to compare a man’s thoughts of me to what Christ Jesus would think of me not sharing his life giving plan.
4. Read the following and share what helped Jesus to obey:
A. Hebrews 12:2 The joy set before him!
B. Isaiah 53:11 “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…”
He will make many to be counted righteous.
Recently, we have decided to give money to someone which I am happy to do, but as our account gets low, I find the enemy whispers fears to me, though The Lord has blessed us beyond measure. Psalm 73:26
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
6. Read Mark 8:34-38
A. What does he tell the crowd and his disciples in verse 34?
To follow Jesus, you have to give up your life to the world, pick up your cross, and follow Him.
B. What danger does Jesus warn about to the person clinging to his life, fearing denying himself, according to verses 35-36?
If we cling to this world, we will lose our life, but if we give our life to God we will gain eternal life.
7. How are you caring for your interior life? You may not be blessed with a view from your porch as Cheryl and I are, but is there a place you can walk or sit that pours beauty into your soul? How can you see beauty right where you are? (Keller says the Lord loves cities more than the country because He loves people more than trees. 🙂 OH how I love to walk with my dogs on our property. Many days I am tired and think I don’t want to do it, but I go out for the dogs who NEED a walk and then I find, I NEEDED it too. I never tire of the sunrises and sunsets. Those are my favorite times to walk. Right now I am enjoying what is left of the flowers from the wedding. They are beautiful and so intricate and varied. The Lord’s creation is truly something to behold.
8. What is one evidence of a person who cultivates his interior life according to Luke 6:45? “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good,…..for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” We tend to speak what we are feeding our hearts.
9. What are your most frequent topics of conversation? (I know it depends on whom you are talking to – -but what naturally comes out of your heart? Be as honest as you can be.) With my 7 year old son, it seems I am constantly reminding him to be kind to others. We talk about how others are hurt when we say and do unkind things. With my husband yesterday, in his pain I reminded him to embrace what the Lord has ordained for him today. I said it rather jokingly (yet I was serious) as he was complaining all day about his pain and difficulty in getting around. He did laugh a knowing laugh as he has been quite grouchy about it and I cannot blame him. When we find ourselves limited very suddenly or even subtly, in our abilities, it is our nature to complain and cry out about the situation. I definitely have done much of this myself and have compassion for him.
10. What are some ways you get the most from the Word? Hmm. There are times when I find scripture radioactive and other times I don’t. Journaling can help me slow down and focus on what the Lord is teaching me. Song is one way the Lord sometimes makes scripture stand out or take on new meaning to me. Other times it may be a speaker or minister who draws out a scripture in a way I have not seen before. I guess at times the Lord works in a variety of ways to put a scripture in my heart.
Chris! This!
“…I reminded him to embrace what the Lord has ordained for him today…”
Thank you for reminding me!
Awe. Laura. Praying for you and your family.
You have a 7 year old yet also a husband who is pain most of the time? Is he much older than you? I think it is wonderful he laughed when you gently rebuked him. Liked your comment how you need a walk as much as your dogs.
We are the same age-he was just diagnosed with a bone spur. Our son is adopted. He was 3 and we were 53!
Wow — there’s a story there — want to hear how you decided to adopt!
I have the same feeling about walking the dogs. I try to use the time to praise the Lord as I enjoy the creation around me. I also would like to know more about your adoption, what courage at 53 and such an act of love, Chris.
Tuesday: If You Cling To Your Life
Read Mark 8:34-38
A. What does he tell the crowd and his disciples in verse 34?
—He said if they wanted to be his follower it meant giving up their own plan for their lives and they would have to sacrifice that plan and follow him exclusively.
B. What danger does Jesus warn about to the person clinging to his life, fearing denying himself, according to verses 35-36?
—The danger in clinging to this temporal life is it will not last but the eternal Gospel (Good News) about Jesus is what gives us life. Life with meaning and purpose that saves the soul.
C. What do you think about Dallas Willard’s interpretation and why?
—I have always thought the same as you and Ortberg that it meant not obtaining eternal life but going to hell. I think now looking at Willard’s interpretation it makes sense in context of the passage. I think as educated people we often think we know more or have a better way than God. The way of Jesus is just too offensive on the face of it. We want a shiny powerful Jesus not a bloody crucifixion. But that was the path Jesus took to obtain our salvation. A way of complete humility. Now I am called to follow Him and identify with Him and that is the way of the Cross. But to follow Jesus and embrace his way will settle my soul because he has already made the way which is life giving and gives meaning and purpose to my soul. To follow and walk intimately with Him I can say “It is well with my soul.” To those hearing Him speak in those verses it made no sense but we have the privilege of being on this side of the Cross.
D. What does Jesus say in verse 38? What does this mean?
—Anyone ashamed of Jesus and his Gospel in this life will experience Jesus being ashamed of them when He returns to judge our works and there will be rewards for faithfulness and loss of reward for being ashamed of Him.
I realize that I at times have been ashamed of my very own children for things but I still love each of them deeply and I always want a close or restored fellowship with them. Shame is not condemnation but I’m sure many tears will be shed that we caused our Savior to be ashamed of us. So praise God He has promised redemption and forgiveness and will restore me completely to Himself. In doing so He makes us fit for Heaven but I can enjoy that now if I choose to follow Him unashamed.
Bev,
Your answer to A-
“He said if they wanted to be his follower it meant giving up their own plan for their lives and they would have to sacrifice that plan and follow him exclusively.”
It reminded me of how Ann Voskamp talks about living “cruciform.”
“Living the posture of outstretched arms in the form of a cross, hearts wide open, open to God, and open to His people, this is a life living and loving vulnerably, accepting the risk of heartbreak in order to live that way of The Way Himself.”
Nila, That really does apply well to what He is saying. I need to revisit Ann Voskamp.
Bev, your answer to D has so much grace. I need to remember to offer that grace to others. You are right in the way you think about our relationship with our children mirroring our relationship with the Lord. He does want to restore us and I think that is a consideration when we think of the way he has predestined us and has had this great plan for our lives from the beginning. We can’t mess it up, but he enemy would love to make us think we can. Though we definitely make mistakes, we always need to turn back to him and seek that restoration.
Love Bev’s post and Nila’s reminder of living cruciform
Yes, I love the reminder of the living cruciform, too.
Bev, Amen to Dee. So much in this post and the responses! Love Nila’s reminder of the cruciform. Got my Ann Voskamp book out.😊
Bev, I so appreciate your wisdom here. I loved your answer to “D” and copied it to my notes, thank you for sharing.
3. Read Mark 8:31-33
A. What does Jesus tell his disciples in verse 31?
He tells His disciples that He must suffer, be rejected, be put to death but in three days would rise again.
B. How does Peter react in verse 32?
Peter rebuked Him.
C. What does Jesus say and how does He explain Peter’s main problem?
Jesus rebuked Peter because he was tempting Jesus to use His power to save Himself (as Satan had done to Jesus) rather than seeing God’s will.
D. When you are afraid to obey God in something, how might Jesus’ words to Peter help you? Be specific.
God has a better idea than idea and plan that I do, so I need to pray to Him instead of trying to figure it out my way. ( and my way is my idol of control…or manipulation) I need to Trust Him.
4. Read the following and share what helped Jesus to obey:
A. Hebrews 12:2
“For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross.” His glorification at the Father’s right and and our eternal redemption are the joys He would accomplish on the cross, for all of those who believe in Him and follow Him. He obeyed to save
B. Isaiah 53:11 “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…”
Jesus knew He would bear our iniquities, He was the only perfect sacrifice that could satisfies the price of our sins.
The enemy causes me to panic and fear in situations that are new or challenging. I need to turn to God’s Word and pray for His will. It is challenging to share my faith until I know someone and have a basis to share it. I like to build a relationship first, so I know a better way to share and what to share. I want to make sure I am living the words that I share. In a relationship I can share my fears and hopes in a more real way. I don’t know if this makes sense. I want to represent Jesus well…He is God….He has led me through the shadows with His light. My weakness is His strength. I am a mere flawed human.
Patti — listening to Rebecca Pippert she said while our message remains the same, our method must change in a culture that doesn’t believe in truth — and we must build a friendship first.
Thank you, Dee.🙏
I love Rebecca Pippert! And there was an interview of Tim Keller where he addressed the same thing,:: same message but different method. I am seeing that true and applicable more and more these days.
D. What does Jesus say in verse 38? What does this mean?
Eugene Peterson, author of The Message version of scripture words verse 35-38 in this winsome and rugged way:
“Don’t run from suffering. Embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way – my way, to saving yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? What could you ever trade your soul for?
If any of you are embarrassed over Me and the way I’m leading you when you get around your fickle and unfocused friends, know that you’ll be an even greater embarrassment to the Son of Man when he arrives in all the splendor of God, His Father, with an army of holy angels.”
Musician Andrew Peterson has a ministry called The Rabbit Room. They have a podcast called “The Deepest Cut”. Each podcast is an interview with a musician about a song they wrote that was born out of suffering. I recently listened to the interview with Ben Shive and it dovetails well into our discussion here.
Thank you for this great post, Nila! Love the words of the Message! I will listen to that podcast from Andrew Peterson!
Nila, This podcast by Ellie Holcomb is so powerful! Thank you so much! I so relate to it! Excellent!
We do not grieve alone, and we know God is near and has empathy. He weeps with us in an ocean of grief. We do not understand it, but He can give us peace. These two things can happen at the same time…hearts break and He gives us peace. First recorded song Miriam and Moses with the Israelites after going through the Red Sea: “I Will Sing to the Lord.”
Love this: “God must know it is good for our hearts to sing”
My husband was a musician (and a teacher) and music has always been a key part of our lives.
Patti,
I listened to Ellie Holcomb last week. Yes, a very heartening interview. The Red Sea Road.
I use to listen to her dad, Brown Bannister, in the 70s. Wonderful lyracist and musician.
There are so many good things to listen to! Only for more time in the day.
Will look that up!
I’m not familiar with Brown Bannister! I will look him up. Music and lyrics speak loudly, especially to the younger generations.
6. Read Mark 8:34-38
A. What does he tell the crowd and his disciples in verse 34?
If we desire to follow Jesus, we need to take our eyes off of ourselves and our desires, and be willing to live and die for the Lord. I love the Elizabeth Elliot you tube talks. She encourages us to remember why we are here; to live for the Lord, not for self.
B. What danger does Jesus warn about to the person clinging to his life, fearing denying himself, according to verses 35-36?
We may save our physical life by denying Jesus, but it may result in losing our eternal life. This world has nothing to offer that is close to eternal life with Jesus. If my life is centered on Jesus, He is the most important part of my life, I will better represent Him. . Jesus needs to be the compass of all the choices I make, thoughts, words, priorities. I need to stay in God’s Word. Love this lesson, Dee. I like Ortberg’s book! I don’t want my soul to disintegrate !
In John Ortberg’s Soul-Keeping, he tells of how his mentor, Dallas Willard, made him see this passage differently.
C. What do you think about Dallas Willard’s interpretation and why?
I love Willard’s interpretation. The soul is not the body, but it controls much of our earthly body. The soul continues when the body dies. I feel like the conscience is part of the soul. Sean McDowell (son of Josh McDowell) has some interesting you tube interviews on the soul. I have so enjoyed them.
D. What does Jesus say in verse 38? What does this mean?
If we are more interested in ourselves(pride) and the things of this sinful world, than we are in following Jesus and being pleasing to Him, we will not be part of His Heavenly Kingdom. What I profess with my tongue holds great weight. If I profess Him, I need to live out those words.
Patti,
“If I profess Him, I need to live out those words.” Keeping Jesus as our compass-so true! Everyday we need to keep ourselves from being sucked into our culture. What are we feeding our soul? Love the recommendation for Josh McDowell.
Amen, Chris! What are we feeding our souls! So important!
Monday: The Approval of Man vs the Approval of God
3. Read Mark 8:31-33
A. What does Jesus tell his disciples in verse 31? The Son of Man must suffer, be rejected and killed, and after three days rise again.
B. How does Peter react in verse 32? Peter takes Jesus aside and rebukes Him. This wasn’t just a friendly remark, it was a strong censure.
C. What does Jesus say and how does He explain Peter’s main problem? Jesus turns around, looks at the Twelve and openly rebukes Peter, “Get thee behind me Satan!” He tells Peter that he does not understand the things of God, but instead focuses on men’s opinions.
D. When you are afraid to obey God in something, how might Jesus’ words to Peter help you? Be specific. when I was hesitant to start a women’s bibles study, I made all kinds of excuses (I’m too old, voice disability, no one will come, etc) …for years. If I had thought about this encounter between Jesus and Peter, realizing that Satan was promoting my doubts, I would have begun sooner. Right now I am struggling with whether or not to sign a song in church on Sunday, “The Power of His Love.” I need to say to myself, get behind me Satan, and obey the Spirit. I’m going to email the pastor right now, before anything else enters my thoughts.
4. Read the following and share what helped Jesus to obey:
A. Hebrews 12:2 Jesus endured it all for the “joy that was set before Him.” Joy of bringing many sons to glory, joy of completing His purpose, joy of being crowned with glory, joy of heaven
B. Isaiah 53:11 “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…” Jesus knew that His suffering would satisfy the wrath of God paying our sin debt, and many would be redeemed/saved.
I’d have to say sharing my faith. My pastor is always talking about having conversations with people, but that’s not really feasible for me with my voice, unless it’s a quiet setting. What would be god’s truth for me? I could really use some help here, sisters.
Cheryl Ann, I just love your motivation to write your pastor this minute before another thought enters your mind. We were at a church previously that was dying. I clearly remember trying to coax people into participating in the life of the church and receiving all sorts of excuses. It was sad. Our current church is so alive, it’s refreshing. If you are feeling led to have conversations, do not let your voice limitations stop you. Pray. Look for ways the Lord would help you communicate as you have with the signing. I find that ministry so amazing! Elizabeth Elliot was just sharing in a recent recording I listened to, that her great-grandfather began sign language, I believe? Fascinating! Perhaps you have a unique ministry opportunity to the deaf/hard of hearing? Or maybe your ministry is through email? Perhaps everyday conversations in the store or public places isn’t where your work is done, but be open to His leading and see how he will use you- so exciting! I love it. Of course the lie is that He can’t use you, and the truth is He can! Jer. 29:11
I didn’t know about your voice. Tell us more.
Thank you Chris and Patti for encouraging me. As I listened to “The Power of Your Love” this morning before doing devotions/bible study, I was overwhelmed with His presence, and He reminded me that I am so much more than just my voice. Others may talk and evangelize, but His purpose for me is different. I encourage, am a channel He uses to soften hearts, an example to others of His grace and strength in difficult circumstances, and many other things. I guess I was just envious and got down on myself.
To answer your query, Dee, I have Spasmodic Dysphonia, When I try to talk, the tiny muscle attached to my vocal cords, spasms. This shut off the air flow which is needed to speak giving me a strangled sound. So, I whisper, which does not require/use the vocal cords. That’s the short version. I also have a slowly progressive brain disease causing cerebellar ataxia. The cerebellum controls the motor function of the body. My fine motor control is very poor (handwriting is illegible), and large motor control is poor.
That’s another reason this blog is dear to me. We all have something that could hinder us, but there is so much joy in the Lord. We are all examples of His strength being perfected in our weakness. He powers the twinkling lights of our lives. God is so good!
Cheryl, your explanation about your voice condition and how you are using this “hindrance” like signing-that is hard to do! I have a friend who has a similar condition, but she is good at other things, like secretarial work. She has trouble writing, too, but can peck at a keyboard. They go to a different church, but I stay in contact with her occasionally.
The few young kids who are in our church love to sign the songs when we do a church program. Some of them couldn’t read yet because of their age, but they sure love to sign!
The more I learn about you, Cheryl, the more impressed I am.
Amen to Chris! I see so many gifts in your writing and your ability to sign, Cheryl. I love the way you share your faith on this blog. God’s truth is in your gifts and I pray He will direct you in connecting through the written word, sign and voice in quiet settings. He is the way maker.
I’m glad you are staying in touch with your friend. Having friends who know and understand is so important. Being accepted and not having to explain myself all the time is a blessing; I’m certain your friend feels the same.
So sweet Cheryl…God is so good. We do all have gifts to give; you should do the signing! Someone in your congregation will appreciate your effort and be touched. When I would dance (not too much lately I’m afraid) the most interesting people would come to me and say thank you for your work. I remember a very hardened by life, burly man coming and saying, “that was awesome! Please dance again soon!” I was happy that I could help someone understand scripture better when I danced.
Monday: The Approval of Man vs the Approval of God
3. Read Mark 8:31-33
A. What does Jesus tell his disciples in verse 31? – He told them that 1. he must suffer many things; 2. be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law; 3. he must be killed; and 4. he would rise again after three days.
B. How does Peter react in verse 32? – Peter took Jesus aside and rebuked him.
C. What does Jesus say and how does He explain Peter’s main problem? – he came right back at Peter and rebuked him, saying “get behind me Satan.” Peter’s main problem was that he was not thinking of Jesus for who he really was, but just a man. Peter’s mind was not on things of God, but on the earthly things of men.
D. When you are afraid to obey God in something, how might Jesus’ words to Peter help you? Be specific. – I can remind myself that when I doubt myself and not obey what God is telling me, or nudging me to do, I’m listening to the ways of man and not God. I am holding on tightly to what man thinks and not worrying about how I’m hurting God when I don’t obey.
4. Read the following and share what helped Jesus to obey:
A. Hebrews 12:2 – Jesus set before him the joy knowing that God was the author and perfecter of faith and by doing this he was able to endure the cross with the end result being He sat at the right hand of the throne of God.
B. Isaiah 53:11 “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…” – Jesus will see many justified because he took the sins of the world upon himself.
5. Share something hard for you to obey. Practicing hospitality? Sharing your faith? Giving to the needy? Spending time with the Lord in prayer or in His Word? Denying yourself food or entertainment you know isn’t good for you? Write down what lies the enemy whispers to you, and THEN write down God’s truth. – The biggest thing for me is being bold in my faith. I’m getting better of saying things and speaking up, but I still shy away from saying things. The enemy likes to remind me that people may be offended or not like it or be mad if I do, but Jesus tells me to spread the gospel to all ends of the earth. He will open the hearts and minds of those he has chosen to receive His Word.
Not sure what I read before on Hebrews 12:2, but we are to keep our eyes focused on Jesus
. Read Mark 8:34-38: oops! Skipped this one.
A. What does he tell the crowd and his disciples in verse 34?
He tells the crowd the same thing he just told Peter. To be his disciple, we need to forsake the ways of men and follow the ways of God.
B. What danger does Jesus warn about to the person clinging to his life, fearing denying himself, according to verses 35-36?
The person clinging to his life in this world is denying Christ. Our will needs to align with the will of God.
C. What do you think about Dallas Willard’s interpretation and why? Jesus just finishes rebuking Peter for being concerned about human things and not the things of God before he turns to the crowd and basically says the same thing to them. I think Dallas Willard is correct when he says we need to nurture our soul or it will disintegrate. It’s the same as staying connected to the vine, or we will shrivel up and die as a branch.
D. What does Jesus say in verse 38? What does this mean?
Again, we need to stay in line with the ways of God in our thinking and actions. If we are ashamed of Jesus, our thinking is flawed and we are cutting ourselves off from the branch. In essence, what Willard is saying is true AND what we have previously thought about this verse is true as well. Our destination is impacted by what we believe and how we behave here on this earth. We are so weak as people and impacted by our culture. Peter could only see what he wanted for Jesus on earth and was moved to rebuke him when he spoke of his death, but God had a much bigger plan. Isn’t it the same for us? We experience something that doesn’t make sense to us and then we have to turn and trust him for his bigger plan. It’s all about submitting to the Lord in everything. Isn’t this always what our faith is all about? “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus,” comes to mind.
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace
Chris, your answer to D, especially “We experience something that doesn’t make sense to us and then we have to turn and trust him for his bigger plan. It’s all about submitting to the Lord in everything. Isn’t this always what our faith is all about?” has really helped encourage me today.
Chris, Love “Turn your eyes upon Jesus” thank you! One of my favorites and so meaningful. Amen to Cheryl…truth:…it is all about submitting to the Lord in everything.”
Lovely….
“We experience something that doesn’t make sense to us and then we have to turn and trust him for his bigger plan. It’s all about submitting to the Lord in everything. Isn’t this always what our faith is all about? “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus,” comes to mind.”

C. What do you think about Dallas Willard’s interpretation and why?
I love this interpretation because it means I can benefit right now and not have to wait until I pass!
D. What does Jesus say in verse 38? What does this mean?
He says if we are ashamed of Him now that He will, in turn, be ashamed when He comes again, of us. I don’t understand this because but seems like it is “tit for tat.” I looked in several versions and they all basically said the same thing.
Here are the definitions of the word ashamed:
adjective
Feeling shame or guilt.
“Are you ashamed for having lied?”
Feeling inferior, inadequate, or embarrassed.
“ashamed of my torn coat.”
Reluctant through fear of humiliation or shame.
“ashamed to ask for help.”
I don’t understand why God would treat us this way. 🤷🏻♀️
Laura, I loved Bev’s answer to D. Go read it and I think you will feel better about this.
Love this from Laura:
C. What do you think about Dallas Willard’s interpretation and why?
I love this interpretation because it means I can benefit right now and not have to wait until I pass!
Tuesday = If You Cling to Your Life
6. Read Mark 8:34-38
A. What does he tell the crowd and his disciples in verse 34? That to come after Jesus you have to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Him. Most people, even myself in the distant past, think of bearing a cross as some type of burden, “a cross I have to bear.” But to carry a cross meant you were going to your death, an execution. Gal. 2:20, Ph’p 1:21. Ro. 6:8
B. What danger does Jesus warn about to the person clinging to his life, fearing denying himself, according to verses 35-36? Clinging to life without Jesus means actually losing your life, hurting your soul.
I agree that I need a healthy center (interior life, soul), but that is what happens when the Lord opens our eyes to truth and saves us. The Holy Spirit indwells me now guiding my life. Is that what Dallas means? That now we have the help of the Spirit, we need to study the Word and apply it to our lives to maintain that healthy life. It’s confusing, because it almost sounds like Dallas is saying we can do the work on our own.
D. What does Jesus say in verse 38? What does this mean? Whoever is ashamed of His words (dying to self), Jesus will be ashamed of her when He comes again. I think it is talking about Christians who are not fully committed to Jesus, who are ashamed of talking about Jesus and living for Him.
Dee,
Reading about your time with International students, when you said, “After just my opening sentence, a holy hush came over them.”
What was your opening sentence?
I don’t think it was my opening sentence, but the Lord.
I simply began by telling them: I have loved my students from all over the world – they work so hard, often at two or three jobs, speaking two or three languages — do you know what they call someone who speaks just one language? An American.
So you see — it was the Lord.
I can see it was the Lord, Dee, but I also think you showed them that you valued them and humbled yourself – the American. Do you mind if I use that quote?
Of course. Thanks for your encouragement.
So happy that Nila asked that! Oh, Dee, so perfect. Thanking God for being so present and for the hush that came over the group.
Great question, Nila. I had been wondering as well.
Wednesday:Caring for Your Soul
7. How are you caring for your interior life? You may not be blessed with a view from your porch as Cheryl and I are, but is there a place you can walk or sit that pours beauty into your soul? How can you see beauty right where you are? (Keller says the Lord loves cities more than the country because He loves people more than trees. 🙂
** I maintain by reading/studying the Word, being involved in bible study groups (including this blog) and talking about the Word and applying it to my life.
8. What is one evidence of a person who cultivates his interior life according to Luke 6:45?
** She speaks with grace, kindness, and compassion. Gill says that the “treasure” in our hearts is what God has place in our hearts, and thus our words reflect that treasure.
9. What are your most frequent topics of conversation? (I know it depends on whom you are talking to – -but what naturally comes out of your heart? Be as honest as you can be.)
** I am more a listener than a speaker. I’ve mentioned before my natural desire to snap at my husband, but on the whole I try to encourage him. I use reflective listening as much as possible with family and friends, sharing their joys and trials. I ask questions that will give me better understanding. When appropriate to the conversation I share how the Lord has helped me, to encourage others. I message friends, “How can I pray for you today?” and respond to their replies with written prayers of adoration, request, and thanksgiving/praise.
10. What are some ways you get the most from the Word?
** Strong’s concordance ( Using my tablet, I can tap on a word as I’m reading, and Strong’s pops up for that word), online commentaries when reading on my laptop (tap a verse and I see concordance and several commentaries), discussing the Word with others helps me to process/clarify my thoughts and widen my perspective.
I like your post, Cheryl. How is it you have access to Strong’s in this way? That would be so handy!
The app on my tablet is “Touch Bible.” The website I use most frequently is kingjamesbibleonline, org biblestudytools.com is one where you can select different tranlations and access strongs and commentaries.
Love this post, Cheryl. Love your answer to 8. And the Strong’s concordance. Listening is so important. Listening is learning and shows love and respect for the friend telling her/his story. You are a blessing.
6. Read Mark 8:34-38
A. What does he tell the crowd and his disciples in verse 34?
Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
It is interesting to note that Jesus addressed BOTH disciples and the crowd. It wasn’t like the disciples could say that this does not apply to them to imply that they are already doing this.
B. What danger does Jesus warn about to the person clinging to his life, fearing denying himself, according to verses 35-36?
If I cling to self and not deny myself, I will lose the very thing I am clinging to: life. God’s upside-down kingdom. I was reading a short article from HomeLife magazine last night. It told of a story of a young man who was working for a very prestigious, large company-going early to work and late at night. He had the trappings of comfort, and his family has been enjoying his “gains”, the good life. But one day, he was found dead from a stroke. The afternoon of his death, the company already had somebody in his place, and this new employee was on training the next day. Business as usual. Nobody from the company attended his funeral as if he did not exist.
It took a few months for my former place of employment to replace me. I am thankful for the wonderful opportunity to have taught part-time. and am thankful for God’s grace to help me re-order my private world so that He is always first before anything else.
I had to digest what Dallas said and tried to wrap my brain around it. Maybe by destination, he is saying, that I am not working toward it, but the forfeiting of my soul is a “today” thing? That self-denial is a day-to-day thing, a daily seeking of where my soul is at, confessing, repenting, and doing it again each time?
D. What does Jesus say in verse 38? What does this mean?
I have been set apart to stand for truth and not be ashamed of Jesus and His words. I have to acknowledge his lordship in my life, publicly showing the world I belong to Him. So if I do not acknowledge Him now, why would He acknowledge me to the Father since I said and lived like I have not/do not belong to Him? Rabbit trailing???
Your note, It is interesting to note that Jesus addressed BOTH disciples and the crowd. It wasn’t like the disciples could say that this does not apply to them to imply that they are already doing this, struck a chord with me, Bing. I think that’s an easy trap to fall into, believing a message doesn’t apply to me: I already know that, I’m not like that, I would never do that, etc. I have to be careful and listen with an open heart.
Same here, Cheryl. The Lord has been helping me listen to sermons and make it personal to me, and not to think that this person and that person need to hear this! The enemy of our souls is very tricky.
I do love your rabbit trails as they lead to deeper thinking. You are onto the truth. We do need to continually refocus on the Lord each day. The enemy slowly works at us, luring and wooing us with our idols. We are easily led astray. Phillipians 2:5-11 says, “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” He is our example. I need to work more at this humbling and obedience -what an example he has set for us.
Sometimes my sons endless questions each day get on my nerves as I rarely have answers for them all, but yesterday he asked why there are so many languages-today I have opportunity to include the story of the Tower of Babel in our devotions. 🙂 this is also a great chance to talk about humility and Christ’s example to us of obedience.
such a good rabbit trail here
Wednesday: Caring for Your Interior Life
Last week, Cheryl Ann wrote this in response to the question: How did you experience the good life this week because of your relationship with the Lord?
As I have continued reading a Psalm each morning (plus Keller’s book and Spurgeon’s Treasury of David), my eyes, heart, and spirit have been lifted. Most mornings I’ve been able to sit on my front porch while I read, seeing the beauty of the countryside. To me, that is the good life, being in His presence.
As I was reading Cheryl’s post, I was on my own porch. I can never catch these pelicans flying by with my camera, for they appear and disappear so quickly. However, this is very close to what startled me when I looked up, courtesy of a Pexels photo.
The last few months have been bittersweet times for me. It is as if God knew I could handle, with His love and grace, the pain that came with these times and set me on a journey that I thought was too painful to experience and recover from. As I sit here and contemplate the “interior” life, I am beginning to see the times when I could only see His footprints on the sand because, as the song/poem goes, “He was carrying me.” And I know those times were when I had truly been in communion with Him and His Word. Scriptures have had a constant radioactive effect on me, and like many of us here, they have given life to my weary soul and heart. My garden continues to be a place of blessing for me where I can sing to myself, listen to the spoken word, and talk to God.
“And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.”
8. What is one evidence of a person who cultivates his interior life according to Luke 6:45?
“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Our words speak what our hearts are full of.
9. What are your most frequent topics of conversation? (I know it depends on whom you are talking to–– but what naturally comes out of your heart? Be as honest as you can be.)
When I talk to my closest Christian friends, we often talk about family, what is going on in our lives, and remind ourselves of God and His Word.
When I talk to casual friends, I try to ask them questions that show my interest in their personal lives. How are you is something that I ask and seriously value the answers.
10. What are some ways you get the most from the Word?
I have been doing the SOAP method: Read the Scripture sometimes out loud; what are my observations; how I can apply it, and then Pray in relation to the Scripture. My journal has started from a one-pager to more pages.
I have started reading other versions of the bible; checking out the meaning of words, and if time allows, reading the historical contexts, especially when I don’t “get” it!
So important from Bing:
When I talk to casual friends, I try to ask them questions that show my interest in their personal lives. How are you is something that I ask and seriously value the answers.
Beautiful answers, Bing. You love others so well.
7. How are you caring for your interior life? You may not be blessed with a view from your porch as Cheryl and I are, but is there a place you can walk or sit that pours beauty into your soul? How can you see beauty right where you are? (Keller says the Lord loves cities more than the country because He loves people more than trees. 🙂
I struggle this time of year because we start school and I am hyper focused and can’t appreciate the world around me. I do like my back deck because I live in a forest and it is quiet and cozy. I am not a city girl!
I get the hyper focus- and your back deck sounds lovely 🙂
It is easy to get hyper focused Laura! Especially, with all you are doing. Your back yard sounds heavenly!
7. How are you caring for your interior life? You may not be blessed with a view from your porch as Cheryl and I are, but is there a place you can walk or sit that pours beauty into your soul? How can you see beauty right where you are? (Keller says the Lord loves cities more than the country because He loves people more than trees. 🙂
I am blessed to be in a somewhat rural area here, as I was in Issaquah. I always loved waking to the mountains there, and here there is also beauty. The ocean is very close by, and the beauty, power and sound of the waves always touch my soul. I love seeing deer now and then running through my yard. The quiet peace, the sunrise, moonlight, crickets and frogs remind me that our Creator never slumbers or sleeps. There is creation and design in all the earth; in a leaf, a snowflake, a deer, a butterfly. God had created all this beauty so intricately that we can know that He is still the Great Designer. We can know that He designed each of us as we are, to point to Him, to glorify Him, and to tell others of His love and His redemption.
8. What is one evidence of a person who cultivates his interior life according to Luke 6:45?
This is one of my favorite verses and has always been special to me. Our mouth speaks forth that which is in our heart. Our words have great meaning to others and they demonstrate what is in our heart. This verse has always helped me filter my words, especially if I am upset. I need to always have God’s filter, because words can love and encourage, or they can crush and hurt. Once they are out it can be a blessing or poison, our choice. “And you cannot put the toothpaste back on the tube.”
9. What are your most frequent topics of conversation? (I know it depends on whom you are talking to – -but what naturally comes out of your heart? Be as honest as you can be.)
I love learning about other peoples lives, their background, family, personal interests. ( which can lead to deeper conversations). With those I don’t know, sometimes art, travel, and science…I love how science discoveries intersect with Intelligent design and the universe. 😉 With close friends and family, it is about health, family issues, prayer needs, and God’s answers to prayer.
10. What are some ways you get the most from the Word?
Reading scripture directly from the Bible, not just listening to a sermon, every day. ( though I do put sermons on you-tube during the day) Knowing God’s Word, memorizing scripture (which I have never been great at, but I am doing it more). I need more of His Words in my heart. Being in this blog is so so good. It keeps my days focused and I try to do it early, in the quiet of the morning. If I dally, and say, “I’ll start right after I so this thing”….the world comes crashing in with distractions. (No, I am retired and I need to read God’s Word First, then He will take care of the rest)…
So true from Patti:
If I dally, and say, “I’ll start right after I so this thing”….the world comes crashing in with distractions. (No, I am retired and I need to read God’s Word First, then He will take care of the rest)…
Thursday: What a Ride!
11. What reasons can you see for reaching out to Internationals? Have you? If so, share.
—Actually I think the reasons for reaching out to internationals is basically the same reason for reaching out to those in our communities and neighborhoods. Everyone should be considered our neighbors and we are commanded to love our neighbor. The practice of hospitality reflects the welcoming heart of God and when people feel loved on and included that represents our Lord well and can give us opportunity to share the hope we have in Jesus and the Gospel. Including Internationals because when they are living in another country among strangers they might be longing for the familiarity of their homeland and hospitality has the power to draw them in.
Also it can make them more open to wanting to learn and know about their host country and its people. They might have a more listening ear.
Living in small town America we do not have an international population and it is a more random experience to cross paths with individuals from foreign countries.
12. What reasons can you find in the following Scriptures:
A. Leviticus 19:33-34
—It is a command from God to treat foreigners living among you like they are one of your community.
B. John 4:35
—We are to recognize that people are ready to hear the gospel. “The fields are already ripe for harvest”
C. Ecclesiastes 11:6
—I like the way the Message expresses this verse. “Go to work in the morning and stick to it until evening without watching the clock. You never know from moment to moment how your work will turn out in the end.”
That says to me we are to consistently be about the work of God by planting the seeds of the Gospel and then leave the results to Him because we don’t control that and don’t know how He might be using it all for good and his glory. I would add but we can trust Him to use it all.
13. To encourage your sisters and me, share one of your most exciting evangelistic adventures here, if possible.
—First I will say it always brings great joy to my soul to see or hear about anyone’s salvation. I love hearing about the testimonies of how people were brought to Christ. Also we have sought to be a part of ministry and support to ministries that promote the Gospel.
My own special involvements in sharing Christ are related to the long haul kind of evangelism that plants the seeds of the gospel and then the work of time brings about its fruit in the lives of those close too me like my children and grandchildren. I feel blessed to see the souls who are particularly precious to me have come to a saving knowledge of Jesus. I do not take lightly that all my children and their spouses are believers in Jesus. And most of my grandchildren are the same. God has answered many many prayers we have prayed for each of them. We have tried to always be a voice for the Gospel in their lives not only in what we say but also in how we have lived. They all know Jesus really matters to us.
Love being reminded of importance of prayer.
Bev — you may have heard of the plane crash near you. That was my daughter-in-law’s father. Appreciate prayers!
Praying for your daughter in law and her family, and your grandkids, dear Dee.
Dee, praying here as well. I think I saw the right news report online.
Thank you!
Thursday, what a ride!
11. What reasons can you see for reaching out to Internationals? Have you? If so, share.
The Great Commission that Jesus gave us. The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch. The dignity of each human being. John 3:16
I love the women here who have adopted children from other parts of the world!
Yes. When we were in the Philippines and my husband was a missionary with the Navigators.
When we were in Maryville, we were coordinators of the ministry to the international students attending NWMSU. There were many professors and staff at the local university who were either members or regular attendees. We also had a good college group. We worked with a Nigerian who was a professor at the university. And met once a week with international students. Many of them came to know the Lord as their Savior, and some went back to their home countries.
12. What reasons can you find in the following Scriptures:
A. Leviticus 19:33-34
Love the foreigners as yourself and remember that we were once foreigners from God and did not belong to His kingdom, and foreigners now in this world.
B. John 4:35
NOW is the time for harvest! I have been part of God’s harvest in the past; we are harvesting souls now, and when Christ comes, there will be a final harvest!
C. Ecclesiastes 11:6
13. To encourage your sisters and me, share one of your most exciting evangelistic adventures here, if possible.
Most of the excitement that I have experienced with evangelistic adventures was slow in the making. But when it comes, the joy is palpable! Like hearing from a Filipino (after many years) who told me that God showed up big one day by having me bring a meal to her door when she was a struggling, poor college student. She said she was just praying for food to the God whom we had introduced her to, because she and her roommate were broke, and I showed up at her door! And I couldn’t even remember why I was prompted that very day to bring them food!
To think that one small gesture can be a part of a chain of evangelistic adventures excites me, indeed! A surprise for me has always been to find these adventures among professing Christians. I value all the things I have been learning on this blog. I am using Tim Keller’s religion of works vs. the gospel of grace with my family in the Philippines.
I love this song: The Commission by Cain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APATH3ea-D0&list=RDAPATH3ea-D0&start_radio=1
I love that song too!
I love how the Lord used you by taking the meal to that poor student, Bing. It’s the little things we do, that we don’t even recall later, that can be used of God to touch someone’s heart/life.
8. What is one evidence of a person who cultivates his interior life according to Luke 6:45?
Forgiveness comes from a good heart. Revenge comes from an evil heart.
9. What are your most frequent topics of conversation? (I know it depends on whom you are talking to – -but what naturally comes out of your heart? Be as honest as you can be.)
Usually I like to do things; walk, be outside, travel, go to a park. I may make small talk about those things.
10. What are some ways you get the most from the Word?
Probably listening to sermons about a particular passage or passages is the best way for me to learn. I have missed this here in the last few weeks. Dee you always have such good things for us to listen to!
Monday: The Approval of Man vs the Approval of God
3. Read Mark 8:31-33
A. What does Jesus tell his disciples in verse 31?
That he must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, leading priests and teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later rise from the dead.
B. How does Peter react in verse 32?
He takes Jesus aside and begins to reprimand Him for what He said.
C. What does Jesus say and how does He explain Peter’s main problem?
He says to Peter, “Get away from Me Satan!”
Peter was seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.
Peter let his mind settle on “the things of men” instead of “the things of God”, and Satan took advantage of it. With his mind on “the things of men,” Peter saw the Messiah only as the embodiment of power and strength, instead of as a suffering servant. Because Peter couldn’t handle a suffering Messiah, he rebuked Jesus.(Guzik)
D. When you are afraid to obey God in something, how might Jesus’ words to Peter help you? Be specific.
When I am afraid to obey God, I need to rebuke Satan and set my mind on the things of God. Look beyond the present and to the eternal.
4. Read the following and share what helped Jesus to obey:
A. Hebrews 12:2
He endured the cross, disregarding its shame because of the joy awaiting Him.
B. Isaiah 53:11 “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…”
His suffering made it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he bore their sin.
Sharing my faith…
Lies of the enemy
You may offend, you’ll be rejected, they don’t want religion stuffed down their throats, you’ll lose their friendship, etc.
God’s truth
Remember what Christ did for you…He suffered so you might have eternal and abundant life, He was rejected and despised BUT He disregarded all that because of the joy awaiting Him.
“Since He Himself has gone through suffering and testing, He is able to help us when we are being tested.” Hebrews 2:18
Put away your idol of approval and control and trust in the Lord to give you His wisdom in what to say and how to respond.
“…And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing His glory. So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ.” Colossians 1:27b – 28.
Love this entire post, dear Sharon. This is so good: Peter let his mind settle on “the things of men” instead of “the things of God”, and Satan took advantage of it.
And this: Look beyond the present and to the eternal.
Good speaking to your soul about evangelism. I think next week may be helpful to you too. Rebecca Pippert stresses just being ourselves.
Tuesday: If You Cling To Your Life
6. Read Mark 8:34-38
A. What does he tell the crowd and his disciples in verse 34?
That if they want to be His follower, they must give up their own way, take up their cross , and follow Him.
B. What danger does Jesus warn about to the person clinging to his life, fearing denying himself, according to verses 35-36?
Hang on to your life…you will lose it.
There is no benefit in gaining the whole world but losing your own soul.
This is a diagnosis to which there is a cure…total surrender to Christ…like exercising my soul so it won’t disintegrate.
All to Jesus I surrender
Only at Your feet I bow
Worldly pleasures all forsaken
Fill me with Your love and power
D. What does Jesus say in verse 38? What does this mean?
If you’re ashamed of Me and My message on these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of you when He returns in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.
Bev put this answer so beautifully 😊
The beach…it’s amazing to me to think of all the life in the ocean that God created, the waves that are never ending and to wonder what’s over the horizon.
8. What is one evidence of a person who cultivates his interior life according to Luke 6:45?
A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart.
9. What are your most frequent topics of conversation? (I know it depends on whom you are talking to – -but what naturally comes out of your heart? Be as honest as you can be.)
Kids, grandkids and dogs🤦🏻♀️
10. What are some ways you get the most from the Word?
This blog, Scripture writing on a certain topic, memorization and sermons.
So true from Sharon:
8. What is one evidence of a person who cultivates his interior life according to Luke 6:45?
A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart.
Amen to Dee!
Sharon, I had not thought about scripture memorization as being a way to get more out of the Word, but that is so true. We can meditate on memorized scripture at anytime in any place/situation.
Thursday: What a Ride!
11. What reasons can you see for reaching out to Internationals? Have you? If so, share.
It is a great opportunity. When we lived in Oregon we had two from Japan and one from Spain…3 different years. Our kids were very young and these students treated them wonderfully. Our student from Spain got very involved with our church youth group and became a Christian. Our first Japanese student was a delight, didn’t speak English and was kept very busy with the group she came with. Our second student from Japan could not speak very good English either, but it was amazing how we bonded with her and tried to communicate despite the language barrier. She just clung to our family and cried when we had to say goodbye. One thing I do regret is that our student from Spain returned the following year and wanted to stay with us again but we were unable to sponsor him at that time. We did get together with him for dinner and he was unhappy with the family who sponsored him, so we encouraged him to give them a chance and gain a new experience. Sadly, we have lost contact with all of them.
12. What reasons can you find in the following Scriptures:
A. Leviticus 19:33-34
To make them a part of your family and show them the love of Christ.
B. John 4:35
An opportunity to share the gospel.
C. Ecclesiastes 11:6
An opportunity to plant a seed even though you may not see the outcome.
13. To encourage your sisters and me, share one of your most exciting evangelistic adventures here, if possible.
I think the most exciting one for me was with our grandsons two weeks ago. We were talking about Jesus and what He suffered so that we might have eternal life. Cullen (11) asked how exactly did He suffer and what it meant to be crucified. Both Jim and I went into how He was beaten, the crown of thorns, how much they suffer while hanging on the cross and that they usually break their legs so they can no longer lift themselves up to breathe and eventually die. Explained how it was said many years before this happened that Jesus would have no broken bones and that He died before they had to break his legs. I was watching both boys while telling them this and Micah (6) was just listening and his eyes were wide open. Cullen then asked if baptism saved him and I explained (again) what saves us and that baptism is a public profession that you have put your faith in Christ. I really believe that it was a conversation that had a great impact on their lives and we pray that the seed that was planted will grow in their hearts and we have more opportunities.
Sharon, your story about your grandsons made me smile. So good!
I agree!
Sweet stories of your grandkids and sponsored kids, too, Sharon. You planted many good seeds and showed God’s love to all. Even if you have lost touch, you touch them deeply, I know.
11. What reasons can you see for reaching out to Internationals? Have you? If so, share.
I think it’s like you said. They can go back and be missionaries. They can tell their friends and family. It’s the “Great Commission.” I have spoken to a young Colombian teen whom I taught last year. Someone we got onto the subject of music and I told him how I like Christian music. We talked about artists and types and I gave him the name of a couple of favorite songs. It was a good conversation.
12. What reasons can you find in the following Scriptures:
A. Leviticus 19:33-34
We were once foreigners so we treat them well. We love them as we love ourselves.
B. John 4:35
People are longing to hear something of hope.
C. Ecclesiastes 11:6
Don’t worry about who you tell. Just tell and go about your normal day. Something may stick!
Great “Laura” answers
Love your answer to B., Laura!
11. What reasons can you see for reaching out to Internationals? Have you? If so, share.
We are all children of God and we can learn a lot from each other and bless one another. It is wonderful for Internationals to get to know us, especially when they are here short term. My parents had many international friends, due to my dad’s job. Some were Christians and we visited them when my parents took us to Japan and Hong Kong. Living in Seattle, many of my neighbors were International, and they are still my friends. Our school had many International students, one of which I was blessed to mentor for his Senior project. (I panicked when they gave me a male student, who I did it know, to mentor. But, God knew!) The rest of the story is below #13.
12. What reasons can you find in the following Scriptures:
A. Leviticus 19:33-34:
We are all aliens somewhere. Our call, as Christians, is to love others, all others. We are all the same on the inside. We all need the Lord.
B. John 4:35: The world of souls and friends around us, is ready for harvest.
C. Ecclesiastes 11:6 Tell others of the love of God in your life, anytime you have the appropriate opportunity. It is about loving people to Jesus, it is not about a number of people being in the church. It is about soul survival.
13. To encourage your sisters and me, share one of your most exciting evangelistic adventures here, if possible.
Minh’s first words to me after we met, were “I don’t believe in God”. I told him that was okay, because God believed in him. He and my husband bonded over music and talk ed endlessly. We had a great friendship, and still keep in touch. He and his brother, Tom (Thang) used to come and have cookies with us in the afternoons. And they loved it that I sent all the cookies home with them! We got together with his entire family from Viet Nam, including Grandma, when Minh (Ming) graduated from high school. He graduated from college in Washington and is working in Singapore. I always tell him I pray for him in my texts.
Patti, your answer to Minh that God believed in him was so good. He and his family definitely experienced the love of Christ from you and your husband and it’s so wonderful that you stayed in touch.
I loved that answer too!
Patti, you have sown the seed in Minh’s heart. Praying God to continue watering that seed. Singapore is a wealthy city and many there are very career-driven.
I’m with kids every single day! Young kids and teenagers specifically. I have a difficult year ahead of me with at least one student who is male but you can’t tell at all because he looks like a girl. Hair make up, girl clothes. It’s so sad. I walked around my room this year before the kids came, and I prayed and asked for blessing from God. I asked that the people that walked through the door are blessed by my actions in my words. I asked Him to help me a kind and compassionate teacher among other things. Then, this person enters my room. I was totally fooled but knew something wasn’t right. I looked on the roster and sure enough, she is a he. Ugh! Of course he will be treated just like anyone else, and I am here to teach him. But, I have to remember to not call him any pronoun because I don’t want to play that game! He is still he because God made him that way. I can’t play the game and call him she. I won’t. So, I can’t call him anything 🤷🏻♀️. Help me Lord, to be kind and sensitive. Help me to show him You this year. Amen.
Prayers sweet Laura🙏. I love that you prayed over your classroom❤️. It’s no coincidence that this student is in your class…praying for God to give you His wisdom.
I join Sharon in praying for your school year, dear Laura. I will pray for your relationship with this confused teen.
Amen!
Praying for you Laura, such a difficult situation, but the Lord will give you the wisdom and grace you need. Still covering you in prayer for your upcoming court date, too.
Laura, the classroom is such a mission field! He has given you a heart for others, and He is using you as a teacher. Praying for your interactions with this student.
Oh, Laura. What a shock for you, but God placed this child with you-He knew. This is the kind of adventure we get to take as Christians in the mission field of our community.
—The children and young people in my life start with grandchildren and great grand children. They are the ones we now consistently see and have a place and a voice in their lives. We still have some deep heart’s needs among our own flesh and blood.
Over the years we have been involved with and have actively served in the ministries in our churches teaching Sunday School, and leading in vacation bible school and various levels of youth ministries like AWANA and Jr High and High School youth groups. We no longer have active roles in the organized ministries but we have had neighborhood kids and kids who were friends of our own families. We continue to try and have an open home and always want to influence and encourage young people towards the Lord. Over the years we have been open to God’s leading for whatever age level of ministry He has for us in whatever place we are.
At this point it has become and is our privilege to pray for and lend financial support to several college age young people in our church and from our own families who are actively involved in ministries. Last year we supported one of our grandsons who spent a year with a ministry to high school students. We had the joy of seeing much fruit from that particular ministry. We currently are part of helping financially one of our great nieces who serves full time with a college ministry at the University of Nebraska. She is looking to go to Nepal next year and work full time among students there. We also now support a young woman from our church who serves with the Navigators in a ministry specifically to International Students. So we find joy and excitement in what we see and hear of how God is at work.
With age our energy level doesn’t have us as much on the front lines of interaction with children and young people and it doesn’t seem to be a specific area of hands on ministry for us but our hearts are definitely with some who are on the front lines of good and active ministries.
Personally this week my ministry has been to some of my own closest friends who are suffering physical and emotional pain. Life is very hard but for God who is our Hope.
How exciting about your great niece and Nepal!
Thursday – what a ride
11. What reasons can you see for reaching out to Internationals? These students have traveled to the US to learn about us, They want to know what we think, how we live. By sharing our faith/lives they might become Christians, and missionaries when they return home (sharing their faith with family and friends.
12. What reasons can you find in the following Scriptures:
A. Leviticus 19:33-34 The LORD instructing the Israelites to treat strangers (foreigners), who have come to live with them, with kindness/love; because they were once stranger themselves in Egypt.
B. John 4:35 Jesus tells His disciples to look and see the fields that are ready to harvest; He is referring to the Samritans who were approaching to see/hear Jesus. The Samaritans were treated as foreigners (with disdain) by the Jews. Jesus provided the example of how to treat strangers/foreigners.
C. Ecclesiastes 11:6 I think the lesson here is that we cannot know what God will do with our words/witness, so we should not withhold them from anyone.
13. To encourage your sisters and me, share one of your most exciting evangelistic adventures here, if possible. The Lord has been pleased to use me to draw people closer to Himself through my life and my signing by touching/opening hearts. Whether it led to salvation, softened a heart that was getting hard, drew someone into His presence, or, opened a heart/mind to deeper understanding, only God knows. That He used me, I know.
I know because of the tears I’ve seen on people’s faces when I sign. I know when a stranger comes up to me and tells me what it meant to her after I sign. I know when a friend tells me (after being baptized) that I had a big part in her coming to Jesus (my living a godly life). I know when a friend says at Bible study, “I want to be like Cheryl and know more of the Bible, about Jesus.”
I always point to the Lord by saying, it’s not me that touched you, it’s the Lord.
I have to say that I had forgotten all that I just listed, and it’s only through this blog (questions and comments) that I’ve been reminded. Love you, Sisters.
Cheryl, wonderful testimony in how you have been used of God in your evangelical adventures…your love for the Lord and others definitely shines through in this blog 😊❤️
The strange thing to me is that I go into these adventures with no real thought of evangelizing, and then God shows up! The song, “The Power of HIs Love,” says it so well: “Lord, I’ve come to know/the weaknesses I see, in me/will be stripped away, by the Power of Your Love.” He works through me, because of my weaknessess, which become strengths somehow. It’s a mystery, but Praise the Lord!
What a beautiful testimony, Cheryl!
I love how he has used your diability for His glory so beautifully.
Friday: The Fertile Field
Now that being fully retired has slowly sunk into my mind, the Lord has been talking to me about investing in people’s lives more intentionally. Every day is a gift, and I want to live each day knowing I am “being” and “doing” for the glory of God. He has brought certain people and groups to mind, and I am praying for His leading as all are great investments, but my energy, time, and resources are only so much-my family, a niece and nephew in the Philippines, our kids and youth at church, volunteering at the elementary school, and mentoring young mothers. Show me, Lord!
My prayer is this song:
Here I am, Lord https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcxOkht8w7c
Saturday:
15. What changes do you anticipate in your life due to this week’s study?
I pray that I will take time to cultivate my interior life: Stay in the Word using the SOAP method; Be alert to the Spirit, go in the strength and guidance of the Lord.
