Our daughter Beth was 12 when we adopted her. One of the first things we did was to get her glasses, for her eyesight was so compromised. I’ll never forget her wonder as she walked out of the office wearing her new glasses. Suddenly all the blurry beauty she had missed become clear: trees, flowers, people! She was like the man who needed a second touch from Jesus to see clearly.
She cried and so did we.
God can do the same with us by making familiar passages radioactive.
This week we study two very famous familiar chapters, so pray with me:
Oh Lord, give us eyes to see these historical accounts afresh, to see what You want us to see. May we not skim, but truly see.

Sunday: SPYING GOD
The Lord is always with us, but sometimes He makes us very aware of His presence. Last week did you have an answer to prayer, unusual timing or circumstances, help to do His work, Scripture becoming radioactive, or a sense of His presence through creation or fellowship?
To Get Started Follow These Steps (They are pretty easy, but if you have trouble, find someone young!)
- Search for “Bible App by YouVersion” in the App Store (if you don’t already have it).
- Tap “Plans” (bottom menu)
- This is where all reading plans live.
- Search for: “The Bible Recap”
- Look for:
- The Bible Recap (New Testament)
- or The Bible Recap with Tara-Leigh Cobble
- Look for:
- Open the plan
- Tap “Start Plan”
- Customize your start
- Choose
- Then look for “Adjust Plan” or “Start from Day…”
- 👉 Scroll until you find Day 50 in N.T. Tap into that day and follow the directions for each day — It will usually look like this:
- Choose
- Devotional (Prayer)
- Read the chapters (Usually one a day — and highlight)
- Share one thing you learned
- Watch Tara (Scroll down on the devotional button.)
- Share your “God Shot”
Monday: Acts 9:1-25
- First, read it aloud to yourself, asking God to help you truly see. Share one thing that stands out.
- Optional: Make ten observations and then share one that stands out and why.
- Personally, have you known someone who dramatically changed because of Christ as Saul was? If so, share how.
Tuesday: Acts 9:26-43
4. Read, highlight, and share what stood out to you. Do more, or just your God shot.
5. Optional “Barnabas Action Assignment” Ask the Lord to bring to your mind a believer that needs encouragement. Write a note, text, or visit that person and encourage them. Share what you did.
Wednesday: Acts 10
6. Read, highlight, and share what stood out to you and why. Or just your God Shot. Or do more.
7. There are civil, ceremonial, and moral laws in the Old Testament. The only ones we still obey are moral. I’m going to give an example of each. What is it?
A. Civil: (Governing Israel as a nation, dealing with property, debts, boundaries…) Deut 22:8
B. Ceremonial: (Dealing with worship that points the way to Christ) Leviticus 1:4
C. Moral: (Timeless principles of right and wrong) Exodus 20:3
Thursday/Friday: Tara, God Shot
Go back to the devotional and scroll down to see the Bible Recap — should look something like this:

Sunday
My God hunt for this week is enjoying one of my favorite past times…watching birds. My son for Mother’s Day, got me a Bird Buddy…it’s a bird feeder with a camera in it! I have seen Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmouse’s, House Finches and Cardinals up close!
I thank God for these beautiful creatures and their sweet personalities…we really do serve an amazing God who has to have a sense of humor when you think of certain things He created…including us!
Also, in memorizing Colossians these two verses have really been radioactive.
“You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.”
Colossians 2:13-14 NLT
Thank You Jesus!
Dee, thank you for the prayer above…so good to look at known scripture through a fresh lens! May I really see and glean new truths! Amen

Sharon, That is so great about your bird watching camera. We have a pair of doves right now with a nest just above our deck sitting on eggs. We really enjoy the birds in our backyard.
I added this link to a John 10:10 Project video about hummingbirds. It is amazing and beautiful. Thought you would enjoy it.
Thank you Bev for sharing that video…it is amazing and beautiful!
Dear Sharon! What a wonderful God hunt and a sweet gift from your son! I love watching all God’s creatures. I love the way birds varieties each seem to have their own language and song! Love the Colossians verse too.
Yes, Patti, I too love to hear their songs. I have an app that interprets which birds you hear…in walking in my backyard it has come up with as many as 10 different species of birds and I don’t see them!
That would be a great app to have, Sharon!
The app that I have is called Merlin bird ID. It’s free. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/merlin-bird-id-by-cornell-lab/id773457673
I love it!
Fun! I’m trying the app, Dawn. That bird camera sounds so fun.
That’s the app I have Dawn!
Thanks Sharon. And I think Bird Buddy might be the perfect give for a daughter-in=law who is so hard to buy for!
Oooohhhh…I love the thought of a bird buddy, Sharon. Such a great birthday gift idea!
The Lord is always with us, but sometimes He makes us very aware of His presence. Last week did you have an answer to prayer, unusual timing or circumstances, help to do His work, Scripture becoming radioactive, or a sense of His presence through creation or fellowship?
I think I experienced God in the scriptures that seemed to link together for me last week. The overarching theme was to watch and wait for the Holy Spirit to work in my life.
1. First, read it aloud to yourself, asking God to help you truly see. Share one thing that stands out.
I don’t understand what the “scales” were that fell off Paul’s eyes. It’s curious to me. Were they covered with some sort of “sleep” from being blind? Has anyone ever heard of something like this?
Not sure. Commentaries seem to see it as a metaphor for blindness.
My God Hunt was having nearly all my family together for a beautful wedding in Seattle. We’re spread from New York to Seattle so it was so refreshing.
This was the Christian wedding following the Indian wedding last November. Lots of answers to prayer.
Praising God for many answered prayers and such joy and refreshment with all your family gathered together for this beautiful wedding, Dee.
The Lord is always with us, but sometimes He makes us very aware of His presence. Last week did you have an answer to prayer, unusual timing or circumstances, help to do His work, Scripture becoming radioactive, or a sense of His presence through creation or fellowship?
I am feeling more comfortable in this area and getting to know some nice women in a prayer group for Operation Christmas Child. I sense a depth and sincerity in their commitment to Jesus. Several of them attend the same church I attend. I love the pastor of our church and his dear wife. They are so humble and authentic. I look back over the passed three years and can see God’s hand and guidance in my life. How I Praise Him.
This also became radioactive to me this week. I have heard it before, and Alistair Begg mentioned it in a sermon;
Sow a thought, reap an action.
Sow an action, reap a habit.
Sow a habit, reap a character.
Sow a character, reap a destiny.
Proverbs 20:7 “ A righteous man who walks in his integrity, how blessed are his sons after him.”
So glad to hear this, Patti.
Such great news, Patti! Such a great “goal” to pursue from Proverbs 20:7, “walking in integrity.”
Sunday: SPYING GOD
The Lord is always with us, but sometimes He makes us very aware of His presence. Last week did you have an answer to prayer, unusual timing or circumstances, help to do His work, Scripture becoming radioactive, or a sense of His presence through creation or fellowship?
—I am currently studying the book of Romans using the SOAP method. This past week I went through chapter 8 and it was incredibly encouraging to spend time reading, meditating and praying over it. This was my last entry concerning the closing verses.
OBSERVATION:
Paul started chapter 8 with the premise V.1 “…there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” And he finishes the chapter emphasizing it even more with a list and concludes that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Absolutely nothing!!
V. 39 “…..indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
APPLICATION:
What a wonderful chapter to encourage my heart of the value I am to God my Father and Christ my Savior. I have the power of the life-giving Holy Spirit living in me and They love me to the uttermost and are committed to bringing me to share in their glory. I have been chosen by Him. Called by Him. I have been given right standing with Him and his glory is mine. These verses sum it up perfectly.
“…..victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.” Romans 8:37
“…..nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:39
Thanks for introducing us to SOAP
It has been a tremendous blessing to my own life to begin using it. It can be as involved or simple as needed in my time meeting with the Lord but has helped me greatly in my focus on His Word. Doing the Tara Leigh Cobble study now has been an added help to get into the richness of God’s Word. Glad you led us this way. 💕😊
Monday: Acts 9:1-25
First, read it aloud to yourself, asking God to help you truly see. Share one thing that stands out. One thing that I had not thought about before is what the Lord was telling Paul as he sat in blindness for three days. We know from verse 12 that he had recieved a vision of Ananias, but what else might Paul have learned during this time of quiet? I also thought about the house where he stayed with Judas, vs. 11. The men accompanying Paul from Jerusalem were Jew supportive of his mission to arrest believers, so where would they have taken him once he was blind? The home of a Jew obviously, but then where did they go? Did that mission end with Paul’s blindness? Were those men converted by what they had witnessed and heard? I noticed that those men heard the voice of Jesus, but did not see Him. It would have been a miraculous thing for them alongside the blindness and healing of Paul
Optional: Make ten observations and then share one that stands out and why. 1. Saul is till filled with rage and obtains warrents to arrest believers. 2. On his way to Damascus he’s stopped by a great light and the Lord speaks to him, identifying Himself as Jesus. 3. Saul asks, “What will you have me to do?” 4. Saul is blinded and has to be led into the city, stays blind for three days and fasted. 5.The Lord appears to Ananias in a vision, telling him to find Saul (precise directions to the right house), lay hands on him to restore sight. 6. Ananias is frightened, because he knows Saul is a great persecuter. 7. The Lord tells him to go, that Saul will become an apostle and witness before Gentiles, kings, and Israel. 8. Ananias goes to the house, calls him”brother Saul”, tells him that Jesus who appeared to him has sent Ananias to lay hands on Saul. 9. Saul sight is restored and he recieves the Holy Spirit and is baptized. 10. Once Saul started preaching, with great power and knowledge, that Jesus was the very Christ, the Jews plotted to kill him,
The one that stands out to me is #3, Saul immediately recognizes the authority of Jesus and humbles himself. I cannot even imagine what this revelation was like for him. Filled with a zealous rage, convinced he was serving God, and now the realization that he was SO WRONG.
Personally, have you known someone who dramatically changed because of Christ as Saul was? If so, share how. I would have to say my husband, When we were married he was a firm believer in science/evolution and had contempt for Christianity, although he did not object to my attending church. When we had our first child, he did not think she should go to church or Sunday School. If I’m going, she’s going. He couldn’t object since he was working most Sundays. After conversion his whole attitude changed. His hunger for the Word was voracious, and he was eager to be with other Christians.
Cheryl, I think one of the things that will bring us joy in Heaven together will be when we get to hear the rest of the stories like Saul’s where the blanks get filled in to questions like yours. I wondered some of those same things as I read. 😊
Cheryl, I love all your observations in the questions you asked…so much I didn’t think of.
Also, your husband’s conversion…his whole attitude changed! Praise the Lord!
Cheryl, Love the sweet change of heart and the hunger for God’s Word that your husband experienced!
Great conversion story.
So good to hear of the conversion experience of your husband, Cheryl. There is hope for us who have loved ones who do not believe the gospel.
Monday: Acts 9:1-25
First, read it aloud to yourself, asking God to help you truly see. Share one thing that stands out.
—Verse 22 stood out to me. It says “Saul’s preaching became more and more powerful, and the Jews in Damascus couldn’t refute his proofs that Jesus was indeed the Messiah”. Because of his background as being well taught and a scholar of the Old Testament Saul would have had a clear understanding of Who the Messiah was from those Scriptures. Now having met Jesus personally he had a clear understanding that Jesus was the Messiah. He had connected all the dots perfectly and he had the ability to articulate the teaching so clearly other Jews who would have been knowledgeable of the same Scriptures couldn’t disprove the proofs he was giving them.
Optional: Make ten observations and then share one that stands out and why.
—Of the 10 observations I listed it was hard to choose one but an over all observation is that Jesus is very active and present in this passage. He confronts Saul in dramatic fashion on the road to Damascus and plainly tells him “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting!” Then Jesus speaks to Ananias in a vision and instructs him plainly in what he needs to do to help Saul. At the same time Jesus is speaking to Saul in a vision telling him about Ananias who will come and lay hands on him so he can see again. A side note in thought for me is that Saul was kept blind and unable to see anything for three days. All he could do was open his heart and mind to God and visually there was nothing to distract him in his time of need.
In his interaction with Ananias Jesus makes it plain what his plan for Saul’s life is. Acts 9:15-16 “….Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel.
And I will show him how much he must suffer for my name’s sake.” That last comment of verse 16 could be another whole area of discussion and thought.
Jesus was clear and thorough in his instructions. I think sometimes in my own life I muddy the waters when Jesus is actually very clear and thorough if I will just listen and wait and let Him remove the scales from my eyes.
Personally, have you known someone who dramatically changed because of Christ as Saul was? If so, share how.
—Yes my closest friend Lynda was a professing atheist when she began to read the Bible in order to refute the teachings of it with the intent of setting a group of women straight who had invited her to their bible study. She was alone reading it as God revealed Himself and she said ok I believe You are real and I will give You 30 days to prove Yourself to me. He immediately did just that in her soul. She laughs now at her audacity in giving God a time frame.
Oh, Bev! Thank you for sharing Lynda’s conversion story. So encouraging.
Yes Bev, I agree with Patti! It’s very encouraging to me in persevering in praying for my lost loved ones.
Wow, Bev! Lynda’s conversion is another encouraging example of God’s work in people’s hearts. And He does not even need our help most of the time. Nothing we can credit ourselves for.
Monday: Acts 9:1-25
First, read it aloud to yourself, asking God to help you truly see. Share one thing that stands out.
Optional: Make ten observations and then share one that stands out and why.
1. Saul was eager to kill the Lord’s followers. He requested letters be sent to the synagogues in Damascus requesting they cooperate in arresting the followers found there as he wanted to bring them (both men and women) to Jerusalem in chains.
2. When he approached Damascus a bright light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say, “Saul, Saul! Why are you persecuting Me?”
3. Saul asked who it was and the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Get up, go into the city and I will give you further instructions.”
4. The men with Saul heard the voice but saw no one and were speechless. Saul got up but when he opened his eyes he was blind, so his companions led him to Damascus where he remained 3 days and didn’t eat or drink.
5. A believer in Damascus named Ananias was spoken to by the Lord in a vision. He was to told to go to Straight Street, to the house of Judas and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul who is praying to Him right now. I have shown him a vision of you coming in and laying hands on him so he can see.
6. Ananias responded, “but Lord, I’ve heard talk of the terrible things this man has done to believers in Jerusalem and he is authorizing leading priests to arrest everyone who calls upon Your name.”
7. The Lord told Ananias to go, for Saul is His chosen instrument to take His message to the Gentiles and the people of Israel and I will show him how much he will suffer for My name’s sake.
8. Ananias found Saul, laid hands on him and told him the Lord Jesus who appeared to him on the road sent him so he might regain his sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Instantly something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, regained his sight, then got up, was baptized, ate and regained his strength.
9. Saul stayed with believers in Damascus for a few days and immediately began preaching about Jesus in the synagogues. All who heard him were amazed saying, “Isn’t this the man who caused devastation among Jesus’ followers in Jerusalem. Didn’t he come here to arrest them in chains to the leading priests?
10. Saul’s preaching became more powerful, his proofs that Jesus was indeed the Messiah couldn’t be refuted. The Jews plotted to kill him and Saul found out so during he night some other believers lowered him in a large basket through an opening in the city wall.
What stood out to me was after Saul regained his sight and was baptized he immediately began preaching about Jesus and in the synagogues where they were told to arrest Jesus’ followers!
Personally, have you known someone who dramatically changed because of Christ as Saul was? If so, share how.
My father who was raised in an abusive home, became rebellious and got into trouble, was led to the Lord by a friend who was on the same ship during WW2. When he went home on leave he tried to share Christ with his mom and dad and his father chased him out of the house with a knife and told him he’d kill him if he ever came back. He was ridiculed by other soldiers whenever he read his Bible or tried to talk with them but he persevered, went to church when he could and became on fire for the Lord. He led 3 of his 6 siblings to the Lord and never stopped trying with the others.
Wow! Sharon! What a dramatic story of change for your father! So thankful he had the character to persevere after such an abusive home life. You must be so proud of him and his courage. Thank you for sharing this.
Oh Sharon that is a powerful story surrounding your dad’s conversion. Thanks for sharing.
Sharon, what a dramtic story, and your father’s perseveance in the face of danger and ricicule, wow!
From Paul’s testimony in Galatians 1, we know that Paul to Arabia for further instruction/revelation from the Lord. How soon after his conversion this happened we don’t know. He then returned to Damascus and had a powerful ministry.
Wow. Great testimony of your father.
Oh my goodness –such a testimony of perseverence of your dad.
Sharon, what a great story, indeed, of your Dad’s conversion! I am in Jeremiah right now with the YouVersion app, and I was struck by his perseverance in preaching the Word to those who opposed him despite their threats and abuse. Your father was Spirit-empowered to do the same.
1. First, read it aloud to yourself, asking God to help you truly see. Share one thing that stands out.
In verses 4-5 Saul truly has an encounter with the risen and ascended Christ, he was immediately blinded. He was told to get up and go into the city, and he would be told what to do. You wonder what went through his mind for three days without eating or drinking. It was life changing. The same amount of time from Jesus’s crucifixion to His resurrection. Makes me wonder where he was mentally for three days.
2. Optional: Make ten observations and then share one that stands out and why.
Saul was on his way to do harm to God’s people.
A light flashed before him and he fell to the ground and he was instantly blind
Jesus told Saul who he was and that Saul had persecuted him.
Jesus sent Ananias to lay hands on Saul to restore his sight
The Lord told Ananias He had chosen Saul to go before Gentiles, kings and the sons of Israel.
Jesus said he would show Saul how much he must suffer for the sake of Jesus Name.
Ananias found Saul and layed hands on him and told him that he was sent by the Lord Jesus
He was so that Saul sight would be restored and he would be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Saul’s sight was restored…whatever had blinded him was removed, he was strengthened and he was baptized.
Saul totally changed and preached Christ for the rest of his life.
What stands out is the dramatic change from darkness to light…..in Saul’s eyes, his soul, his life and his hatred turned to love. All Darkness turns to Light with Jesus, who is the true Light of the World. This is the most dramatic change I have ever read!
3. Personally, have you known someone who dramatically changed because of Christ as Saul was? If so, share how.
I have heard testimonies of these kind of dramatic changes. I have had the scales fall off my eyes, in the way that I saw a scripture become radioactive.
(After cataract surgery, it gave new meaning to the “scales falling off eyes” in a literal way )
I think of how powerfully it changed the world, for someone who worked against Christ for their own benefit, to then commit his life to Christ and write so much scripture (letters) that has brought millions to know Jesus! Praise God!
“What stands out is the dramatic change from darkness to light…..in Saul’s eyes, his soul, his life and his hatred turned to love. All Darkness turns to Light with Jesus, who is the true Light of the World. This is the most dramatic change I have ever read!”
Patti, Thanks for sharing this beautiful insight and yes Paul’s s story has to be one of the dramatic changes of a life ever. I’m glad Dee is having us relate other powerful stories of changes in lives They certainly serve to encourage us with the hard people we have or encounter in our own lives
Patti, I never thought about the significance of the three days. I’m glad you pointed that out.
I love your reflection on darkness to light and your cataracts giving you new meaning to scales falling off.
1. The Lord is always with us, but sometimes He makes us very aware of His presence. Last week did you have an answer to prayer, unusual timing or circumstances, help to do His work, Scripture becoming radioactive, or a sense of His presence through creation or fellowship?
I usually work too late to attend the ladies bible study at my church. And even when I do have that day off, I feel like I shouldn’t go because I’m not up to date on what they’re studying, I’ll throw off the dynamics of the group by being a new addition, and I’m not comfortable communicating in a group until I’ve been there for quite a while. So I use these excuses to justify staying home.
This past week I had the day off and I was visiting my son and his family, bringing a meal to the family for the newborn granddaughter (and of course, spending time with my grandkids). My son, who is an associate pastor at our church, asked me if I was going to the ladies bible study that was about to start at our church next door. I felt obligated to go even though I wasn’t planning on it.
It turned out to be such a blessing of connecting with the ladies of my church. I really needed that. I was able to share things and pray with them. God knows that I need this and he showed me that this is what he wants our fellowship to be.
Dawn, I’m so glad you went! When I have led studies in the past, I was always glad for a new face. Often it helps the dynamic of the group and I’m sure the ladies were happy to see you. Congratulations on the new baby! How many grands is that for you now?
Community is so important in our lives. I love that your son encouraged you and you went to the Bible study, Dawn. I am shy and would have felt hesitant, too.
Sunday: SPYING GOD
In my studies last week, reading about Simon in chapter 8 of Acts, at first I did not see the seriousness of his sin. It seemed to me that he wanted to believe and yes, at first for the wrong reasons, but he did ask for prayer from Peter. That left me feeling like he chose right in the end. I was left feeling a bit troubled about the passage and listened to a John MacArthur sermon on this scripture. He gives a harsh but likely more accurate interpretation than I took away. He characterizes Simon as a tool of Satan, placed in Samaria to deceive the people and oppose the truth of the gospel. This made so much sense to me when hearing all that he had to back this view up. I find the Lord giving me more insight into situations and scriptures if I take time to listen to the stirrings in my spirit.
Thank you for sharing this great insight, Chris. I sort of slid through that part, and you were very wise to research it. I, too, need to take time to listen to the stirring in my spirit.
Interesting insight. MaCarther can be so good yet also has this harsh side, so I tend to not listen to him – -but that is a good observation.
2. Optional: Make ten observations and then share one that stands out and why.
Saul was speaking threats and ready to kill.
He went to synagogues to find out where the believers were. He wanted to bring the believers back in chains. Both men and women.
On his way, he was “struck” by a harsh light from heaven. He fell to the ground.
He heard a voice asking why he was persecuting Him. He asks who it is, but seems to know it’s the “Lord” because he refers to the voice as lord.
The voice tells him directions of what to do. The men with him were speechless.
When he got up he was blind. He went to Damascus and for three days he didn’t eat or drink.
A believer in Damascus also had a vision. Jesus told him to go to the house on “Straight Street” (? This is was the NLT says) and find Saul. He was to lay hands on Saul.
Ananias was confused because Saul was the one to persecute the believers. Jesus says he is the one to witness to the gentiles.
Ananias went and explained to Saul and ay hands on him. Scales fell from Saul’s eyes. he was baptized and then began to eat and drink.
Saul began speaking of Jesus and encouraging people to believe.
I think it’s interesting how Saul was chosen by Jesus to witness to the Gentiles. Jesus knew that if the Gentiles heard him versus a Jewish person that they might come to faith easier. He was both a Roman citizen and a Jewish citizen. Good move!
3. Personally, have you known someone who dramatically changed because of Christ as Saul was? If so, share how.
I have not witnessed this personally.
3. Personally, have you known someone who dramatically changed because of Christ as Saul was? If so, share how.
Laura, love the insight on Saul preaching to the Gentiles.
I thought of somebody that I heard of and have read about that made quite a conversion. That was Carla Faye Tucker. She has made an impact on many, and still continues to this day. Her story is impactful. We lived in Texas during that time.
Have you read Karla Faye Tucker Set Free that Linda Strom wrote?
I would love to read Linda’s book. That must be an amazing story.
Monday: Acts 9:1-25
First, read it aloud to yourself, asking God to help you truly see. Share one thing that stands out.
There is so much!
1. Jesus says, you are persecuting me BUT….he plans to use Saul. Amazing and unbelievable.
2. Saul must be led by the hand in complete submission versus the ruthless rebellion he was leading against Jesus.
3. He was left in this state of blindness for 3 days and neither ate nor drank. 3 days to repent and change his heart. 3 days Christ was in the tomb. It was a big change required and not something overnight.
4. The very specific directions to Ananias- Straight street, house of Judas, man praying, vision…there is nothing left to doubt. And the Lord is looking for his help to do a miracle like Saul had witnessed but been in objection to-now he will receive the miracle.
5. Ananias calls Saul, Brother. He has accepted the Lord’s will in this and is not afraid, but trusts what the Lord is about to do.
6. Saul rose and was baptized. His healing and spiritual conversion were immediate.
7. Under persecution, Saul gains strength.
8. Only days into his ministry, the Jews plot to kill him, but the disciples help him escape. He is spared, for now, what he approved of for Stephen.
Optional: Make ten observations and then share one that stands out and why. Overall what stands out to me is the way the Lord works. We do not expect Saul to be converted for Christ. We do not expect him to gain strength when persecuted. Who could have guessed that Saul, after seeing what Stephen endured, would choose to follow Jesus? Jesus surprises us. We should look to expect something amazing.
Personally, have you known someone who dramatically changed because of Christ as Saul was? If so, share how. I can’t say I have seen anything as dramatic as Saul, but certainly hearts changed for Christ, including my own.
Tuesday: Acts 9:26-43
4. Read, highlight, and share what stood out to you. Do more, or just your God shot.
The disciples were afraid of him, of course. Rather like Osama Ben Ladin coming to our church saying he was a Christian now.
He had to keep giving testimony and showing proof that he was changed: preaching, debating Hellenists trying to kill him.
Love this phrase “Walking in the fear of the Lord and comfort of the Holy Spirit.”
Amazing Peter was given power to raise Dorcas to life.
My Barnabas assignment. A note to my handyman who sees needs when he comes and meets them.
5. Optional “Barnabas Action Assignment” Ask the Lord to bring to your mind a believer that needs encouragement. Write a note, text, or visit that person and encourage them. Share what you did.
Dee, I love that God has given you a handy man and that you look for ways to bless him. My step-mom has a man who helps her and I am so grateful. Maybe I need to express my gratitude to him as well.
Dee, You comparison to Osama Ben Ladin gave me a new perspective on Saul! Wow!
You are so sweet to send a note to your handyman. Words of encouragement are so meaningful and I know he felt appreciated.
Chris and Patti — thanks. You two are very good encouragers!

—Verse 31 says the church had peace and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.
As I considered what it means to live in the fear of the Lord I hate to come across negative but I feel I don’t see much fear of the Lord being practiced in the American church in today’s world. In fact according to poll numbers the American church is declining. I believe that is the result of not fearing the Lord and squelching the work of the Spirit by allowing sin to have place among us. The church in America has become a victim of its culture. OK, long discussion there but the answer lies in believers living in the fear of the Lord. Which is to be in total awe of Him. He is to be worshipped, exalted and first in all things. And that has to begin in my own life personally. That verse also says they were encouraged by the Holy Spirit. I am grateful for the precious Holy Spirit Who always is at work in spite of me. Am I discouraged with the church. No because there is a much broader context to “the church” that is the body of Christ. God’s church is growing in many places in the world by leaps and bounds because there is a healthy fear of the Lord at work. I am a sister to all those believers world wide and we are the church so I rejoice in the great and good work being done in and through the lives of fellow believers. I visited with a sweet elderly former missionary at church on Sunday and she felt the difference between the American church and many foreign churches is we have excess in our lives and are not dependent enough on God. And we don’t experience any significant measure of persecution for our faith. Both of those things cause us to fear God in healthy ways. And we are never without hope because He loves us and hears and answers our prayers.
5. Optional “Barnabas Action Assignment” Ask the Lord to bring to your mind a believer that needs encouragement. Write a note, text, or visit that person and encourage them. Share what you did.
—This morning I took time to write a lengthy email to a believing friend who has suffered discouragement from family ostracism and complete lack of understanding of her special needs. I had been encouraged by reading today’s “My Utmost for His Highest” lesson called “Out of the Wreck I Rise”. It is on the verse from Romans 8:35 “What shall separate us from the love of Christ?..” So I shared scripture and some of those thoughts with her. We hope to get together soon.
And we are never without hope because He loves us and hears and answers our prayers.
I so agree with this Bev and what your missionary friend says about the American church.
It is true about the American church, so we pray for ourselves and our body.
Tuesday: Acts 9:26-43

When Saul went to Jerusalem the believers were afraid of him…no surprise there! I wouldn’t have believed he truly was a believer. BUT Barnabas (I’m so thankful for the Barnabas’ in my life)! He took them to the apostles and told them about Saul’s conversion and how he had boldly preached in Damascus. Saul stayed, preaching and debating . He was taken away to Tarsus, his hometown, when the believers heard of the attempt on his life.
The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria. It became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord and with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers.
(Our churches here in America have peace, but as believers do we live in the fear/respect of the Lord and are we as sensitive/dependent on the Holy Spirit as we should be?).
Peter heals Aeneas who had been paralyzed and bedridden for 8 years. The whole population of Lydda and Sharon (had to get that in there) saw Aeneas walking around and turned to the Lord! He also brought Tabitha (Dorcas in Greek) back from the dead. That news spread and many believed in the Lord.
I love how the body of Christ is displayed in these verses…Barnabas, the encourager. The believers protecting Saul from harm. Peter’s gifts being used for God’s glory in furthering His kingdom. Tabitha/Dorcas, always doing kind things for others and helping the poor. The believers coming together in calling Peter to help Tabitha.
5. Optional “Barnabas Action Assignment” Ask the Lord to bring to your mind a believer that needs encouragement. Write a note, text, or visit that person and encourage them. Share what you did.
Praying on this.
I agree on your insights! Love the body of Christ.
I love your insights on this passage of scripture. And I’m sure Sharon was a beautiful place. 😊
Sunday: SPYING GOD
The Lord is always with us, but sometimes He makes us very aware of His presence. Last week did you have an answer to prayer, unusual timing or circumstances, help to do His work, Scripture becoming radioactive, or a sense of His presence through creation or fellowship?
This past week, I have been reminded once again that God is always at work in my life, even if things don’t turn out the way I expected. Or nothing spectacular is happening that I can attribute to Him. I got my copy of Alistair Begg’s Bible Study guide, “God of the Ordinary,” based on the story of Ruth. The first pages reminded me that He, the Creator and Maker of heaven and earth, is involved in my “ordinary” life.
Yes! Our ordinary life!
Monday: Acts 9:1-25
First, read it aloud to yourself, asking God to help you truly see. Share one thing that stands out.
After Paul heard the voice, he asked, “Who are you, Lord?” Why did he address the person who spoke as Lord?
v. 9 THREE days, he was blind and did not eat or drink anything. The number three often strikes me as a unique number, like seven.
v. 16 I will show him how much he will suffer for my name. Wow, God prepared Paul for the hardships he would encounter. Those three days of blindness were preparation time also for Paul, I would reckon.
v. 17…so that you may see and be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is mentioned again for a man of God to do His work.
One thing that stood out for me, though I have not paid much attention to these words before: “…Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once, he began to preach in the synagogue that Jesus is the Son of God. Paul/Saul changed from a major persecutor of the gospel to a major proclaimer of the gospel.
I agree, Bing, the numbers 3 and 7 appear often in the scripture. And I love that you point out Saul/Paul changed from persecutor to proclaimer!

1. In Jerusalem, the disciples were afraid of Saul and did not believe he was a disciple.
2. But Barnabas defended him and testified of Saul’s faith.
3. So, Saul preached boldly
4. But the Greek speaking Jews wanted to kill him.
5. The brothers helped him escape.
6. So the church had peace and was multiplied
7. Peter healed a man bedridden for 8 years
8. All the residents of that town believed.
9. The beloved saint Dorcas dies and is restored to life after Peter is sent for and kneels to pray.
10. Peter presents her alive and many believed.
What stands out to me is how the Lord uses these miracles to draw many to the Lord. The healings are immediate and the turning to faith is as well.
5. Optional “Barnabas Action Assignment” Ask the Lord to bring to your mind a believer that needs encouragement. Write a note, text, or visit that person and encourage them. Share what you did.
I’m praying I will see more this week, but I do have one thing that happened on Monday. We had a violent spring storm sweep through our area. My daughter who just had the new baby in April heard the wind and went out to close the umbrella on her patio. At the same time a large tree limb (the size of a tree itself) fell and damaged their roofing. Thankfully no one was hurt, but it really scared my 5 year old grandson. He was quite upset and my daughter texted me that he asked why would God let that happen to us? I immediately texted her Isaiah 41:13, which I have had my son memorize due to his struggles. Then I remembered how this grandson loves Forest Frank’s music and I sent a video link to his song, “Lemonade”. The lyrics say, life gave me some lemons, but my Jesus, he be making lemonade. I’m hoping when I see him today, I can ask him if he has found any good that has come from this tree falling on their roof.
What a sweet way to have a conversation with your grandson about the storm, Chris. So thankful no one was hurt.
Amen to Patti’s comment, Chris.
Chris, so thankful that no one was hurt…I can relate to how scary that is and must of been for a 5 year old! Praying for your conversation with him today.
Chris, what a wonderful opportunity for you to talk to your grandson about the fallen tree on their rooftop. Praying for your conversation with him. I will have to look up Frank’s lemonade song.

When Saul began preaching Jesus as the Christ, the Jews of Damascus plotted to kill him. Still today, they is always persecution for those teaching the gospel, yet not nearly the persecution for those teaching other religions …
The disciples in Jerusalem feared him, but Barnabas brought him in and told Saul’s story of seeing the Lord on the road to Damascus and his true conversion.
Here in Jerusalem, the Hellenistic Jews were trying to put Saul to death. The brethren brought him to Tarsus for safety.
Peter healed Aeneas, in the Name of Jesus, and many came to believe in the Lord.
Many came to believe in the area of Joppa, when Peter raised Dorcas from the dead, in the Name of Jesus.
5. Optional “Barnabas Action Assignment” Ask the Lord to bring to your mind a believer that needs encouragement. Write a note, text, or visit that person and encourage them. Share what you did.
I communicate by text or note, with a few new widows often. We encourage one another.
I have a dear young friend, whose family we kind of adopted, when she came to teach a the school where we worked. (about 10 years ago). She had breast cancer that first year and I befriended her 6 year old daughter, who had so much fear over her mom’s illness. We all became close friends. Brittany’s cancer recently metastasized to her brain. Her mom called me yesterday to tell me she has 40 tumors in her brain and it is not treatable. They are strong believers, but it took my breath away. I will be supporting them daily. Lilly, her daughter, turns 16 next week. They need God’s healing hand.
Patti, you are a “Barnabas” here and I appreciate the testimony you gave here in encouraging those near and far!
I will be praying for Brittany and her family🙏…may she and their family feel God’s presence and strength during this difficult time!
Oh, Patti! I remember you sharing about Brittany. I am so sorry to hear of the metastasis of her cancer. Praying for them, and especially Lilly.
Oh Patti – -I am glad Brittany has you in her life. Praying for her and Lilly.
Acts 10
Love the description of the godliness of Cornelius. Feared God will of his household, gave alms generously, prayed continually.
I love how God continually confirms callings by telling one to go and there another will be waiting – go to Joppa and Peter will be there with Simon the tailor.
How scary a vision of the sheet full of animals.
Took 3 times to convince.
Do not call any person common or unclean. WOW.
I SEE THIS WONDERFUL REPTITIO OF GOD SAYING “YOUR PRAYER HAS BEEN HEARD.”
Tuesday: Acts 9:26-43
It must have been hard for Barnabas to take that bold step to accept and minister to Paul. I totally understand the reluctance of the other believers to trust that Paul was being sincere.
In my town there is a very long standing and popular church that has become the focus on social media because they have welcomed a registered sex offender of minors into their church. He has no leadership role or contact with the children of the church, but many people still think that he shouldn’t be allowed there. Many people have left that church because of this.
Recently, my church did a mission trip out of state to help rebuild a home after flooding. One of the men from the group ask if his roommate could come as well. He was allowed to attend. Everything went fine. After returning, our church was contacted by someone to inform us that this man was on parole for domestic abuse and sex trafficking and that if we continued to have any interactions with him, they were going to go to the press and social media to blast us as was done to the other church.
Our leaders decided to tell our church member (who was also a deacon) that we couldn’t allow his roommate to attend services or functions at our church. The church member disagreed and decided to quit attending our church.
It was a hard decision and one that I can see both sides of.
Oh my Dawn. That is very hard stuff that gets complicated very quickly. I do have an opinion and feel definite caution has to be exercised in handling the situation with some protection in place for everyone involved but I don’t believe we have the right to exclude anyone from coming to church to hear the gospel and perhaps be taught and given the opportunity to receive The Lord or grow in a faith walk with Jesus. It comes down to the old adage “ What would Jesus do?” We know He kept company with the dregs of society and if they received Him He told them to go and sin no more. Someone has to help people do that but. You can’t demonstrate the love of Jesus and exclude them if they are seeking. If they don’t want Jesus when offered then they will leave on their own. But the realities of these situations are very hard ones.
Bev, I have the same opinion with regard to what Dawn has shared. “You can’t demonstrate the love of Jesus and exclude them if they are seeking. If they don’t want Jesus when offered, then they will leave on their own. But the realities of these situations are very hard ones.” We have a similar situation in our community, and my heart aches for the families involved. Law vs grace and mercy. So hard!
Oh so hard, Dawn.

—I find Cornelius to be a fascinating and very interesting person. He and his family were not typical Roman soldier kind of people. It would be interesting to know how he came to be a God-fearing man. But we see here the beauty of his influence on his household and the men under his authority.
It stood out to me that both Cornelius and Peter were in a position of hearing from God
And as a result had life changing visions that resulted in a mighty work of God. I think of Romans 8:28 as being well applied here in this account.
“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
There are so many nuances to this account of God at work to bring these men together and we see God do a powerful thing in the furtherance of the Gospel to the whole world. It makes me just say like the childrens song. “God is so Big!!”
Bev, totally agree with all this, but especially your last statement, “There are so many nuances to this account of God at work to bring these men together and we see God do a powerful thing in the furtherance of the Gospel to the whole world. It makes me just say like the children’s song. God is so Big!!” AMEN!

Cornelius…
Lived in Caesarea.
Roman officer, captain of the Italian Regiment.
Devout, God-fearing man along with his household.
Gave generously to the poor.
Prayed regularly to God.
(I wonder if Cornelius had seen Christ being crucified? How did he become a devout, God-fearing man that was well respected by all the Jews?)
Cornelius was told by an angel in a vision to send someone to summon Peter in Joppa.
Peter was on the roof top at noon, hungry and while a meal was being prepared he fell into a trance. The sky opened up and saw what looked like a large sheet being let down by its 4 corners. The sheet held all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds and a voice told him to kill and eat them. He declared that he’d never eaten anything that went against the Jewish law that was declared impure and unclean. The voice told him not to call something unclean if God made it. This vision was repeated 3 times and the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven. He was perplexed by the meaning of the vision and at this time the 3 men Cornelius sent arrived at the gate asking for Simon Peter and the Holy Spirit told Peter 3 men were looking for him. Peter went downstairs without hesitation while being told the Holy Spirit had sent them. The 3 men told Peter that an angel had instructed Cornelius to summon Peter to his house so he could hear Peter’s message.
(I smiled at the fact that the vision was repeated 3 times. Peter, like me must of needed it repeated in order to get it…what an awesome God we serve, who loves and knows us so intimately!)
Peter arrived at Cornelius’ home and told him that it was against their laws for a Jewish man to enter a Gentile home/associate with them. BUT he should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean and he came with no objection and asked why he was sent for. They wanted to hear the message the Lord had given Peter!
Pete gave them the Good News and as he was speaking the Holy Spirit fell on those who were listening. The Jewish believers with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured on the Gentiles, too. There was no objection to them being baptized now that they had received the Holy Spirit just as they did.
Cornelius asked Peter to stay with them for several days.
7. There are civil, ceremonial, and moral laws in the Old Testament. The only ones we still obey are moral. I’m going to give an example of each. What is it?
A. Civil: (Governing Israel as a nation, dealing with property, debts, boundaries…) Deut 22:8
A new house must be built with a railing around the edge of its roof so you won’t be considered guilty of murder if someone falls off the roof.
B. Ceremonial: (Dealing with worship that points the way to Christ) Leviticus 1:4
The procedure for bringing an animal for a burnt offering was to lay your hand on the animals head, and the LORD will accept its death in your place to purify you, making you right with Him.
C. Moral: (Timeless principles of right and wrong) Exodus 20:3
God is speaking…”You must not have any other god but Me.”

I was glad to see the movement of the Spirit among the members of the early church shown by their ministering to one another:
Barnabas vouching for Paul’s true conversion
The people in both Damascus and Jerusalem helped Paul escape death at least twice.
Peter was used by God to bring healing to Aeneas, who had been paralyzed and bedridden for eight years.
Peter was used by God to bring Dorcas back to life.
An increase followed all of these events in the number of those who believed in the Lord.
God provided Peter with a place to stay in the home of Simon, the tanner.
2. Optional “Barnabas Action Assignment” Ask the Lord to bring to your mind a believer who needs encouragement. Write a note, text, or visit that person and encourage them. Share what you did.
Since I like to bake and cook, I often ask people or try to observe what their favorite food is. Then, if I can replicate it in the kitchen, I would do so and bring it by their house and do a short visit. The latest one was a lemon posset to an elderly homebound friend who loves anything lemon-y. She texted me a sweet thank you for being thought of.
I like your B action assignment 😊🍋
Me too, Bing. Wish I was your neighbor! 🙂
You are a wonderful neighbor and such a sweet Barnabas with thoughtful gifts of love. Yes I’d love to be your neighbor too!🥰
Wednesday: Acts 10

I was curious to know that the distance between Caesarea and Joppa was 33 miles. By car, it would be an hour, and it may take 9-12 hours to walk with a few stops (per internet inquiry). It is humbling to know what the servants and one soldier did to bring Peter to Caesarea, and Cornelius and his household (plus his relatives and friends) came to the Lord in the process.
Application: I must be ready to go when prompted by the Spirit to tell the good news.
v. 14 God does not show favoritism and accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.
Vs 34-43 Peter took the time to explain the work, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and how to receive forgiveness through His name.
Vs 44-46 the Gentiles received the Holy Spirit while Peter was still speaking.
Interesting for me to note that the baptism of the Holy Spirit happened first, and baptism by water came immediately after.
I just want to connect it with Ephesians 1:13-14 below. Is the point of being “marked” at belief time then? Too much rabbit trailing?
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
7. There are civil, ceremonial, and moral laws in the Old Testament. The only ones we still obey are moral. I’m going to give an example of each. What is it?
A. Civil: (Governing Israel as a nation, dealing with property, debts, boundaries…) Deut 22:8
If you build a new house, you must construct a guardrail around your roof to avoid being culpable in the event someone should fall from it. NLT version
B. Ceremonial: (Dealing with worship that points the way to Christ) Leviticus 1:4
When presenting a burnt offering: He must lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted for him to make atonement on his behalf.
C. Moral: (Timeless principles of right and wrong) Exodus 20:3
“You shall have no other gods before me.”
I’m glad I’m not the only one pondering baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit. It seems mysterious as to when the Spirit is given. I would love to hear more about this.
It seems the usual order is faith, receiving the Spirit, and then water baptism. Though I know many genuine believers embrace infant baptism and a “second baptism” when they receive the gift of tongues. What are you thinking, Chris?
I think you answered my question, Dee. Thank you.
Bing and Chris, I am also pondering these questions…and also of tongues. When they were speaking, where they speaking, so people are different tongues could understand them, no matter what they were speaking in or were they speaking in a foreign tongue that no one could understand. There are so many different aspects of speaking and tongues and Jack Hibbs does a good explanation of it, but it’s still complicated.
I always love your rabbit trails, Bing!

I think it’s interesting that when Paul spoke to the “Greek speaking Jews” they wanted to murder him! These would presumably be either believers or at least those who believed in God. Would they have been like the gentiles because they might not be believers in God OR Jesus. Rather just Jewish people? Why would they have spoken Greek? If so, then Paul would have had something in common with Jesus, in that Jesus was rejected by His own people. Here we see Paul rejected in a similar way.
Interesting questions, Laura. I’d love to know more as well.
I agree with Chris, Laura! Good questions!
Thursday/Friday: Tara, God Shot
8. Watch, take any notes, and share your “God Shot.”
-Several others have commented on the number 3 being significant. Something TLC said as an offhand remark that cracked me up was “Because God knows that Peter only works in threes.” 😀
—My God shot was TLC’s point that when Paul was persecuting the church he was also persecuting Jesus because of the oneness believers have with Christ who is the head of the body. The church is Christ body and we are integrally joined to Him. Believers have his Holy Spirit living in them so when we hurt He hurts with us. There is great comfort knowing that Jesus intimately walks with us in all our painful struggles in this life. I think of these verses from Psalm 34:18
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
And 1 Peter 5:7
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
Jesus truly cares about us and for us.
I have not listened to TLC yet, Bev, but thank you for sharing this! Because God knows that Peter only works in threes.”
I love all of your take-aways, Bev. He is with us and He shares our pain. Great verses.
Hmm. Yes. The oneness of Christ with believers and how he is persecuted along with believers. Isaiah 41:13 “For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who says to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”
Acts 10
Cornelius is so interesting. He reminds me of my Romanian friend Cristian who is endeavoring to live so purely and pray — yet has not yet received Christ. Lord, unless you have a better idea, send Cristian a vision to get him over the hump!
I liked Sharon’s comment about needing to hear something 3X like Simon did.
Verse 46 is an example of speaking in tongues after receiving the Spirit, yet we are also told it is not for all in 1 Corin. 12:30
Interesting about the prophecy of a famine and their obedience to sending relief.
Dee, I will join you in praying for Cristian to have a vision, so he will truly know Jesus.
Thank you for mentioning the prophecy of a famine and their obedience to send relief.
I love this study…so many details, that are so important!
Dee, I am praying now for Cristian. I’ve never known anyone with the gift of tongues.
Acts 10

The Lord sent an angel of God to visit Cornelius. He was a centurion (a respected military commander ), he was generous to the Jewish people, and he prayed to God continually.
God timed two visions to work together. I love how God weaves things together in the lives of Cornelius and Peter.
God also sent a vision to Peter the next day. It was a great sheet filled with animals and a voice told Peter first to kill the animals and eat. The voice gave a second message that God had cleansed these and they were no longer considered unholy. This happened three times, and then the sheet was taken back up to the sky. God was showing Cornelius that he should not call any man unholy or unclean? (Acts 10:28-29)
Just after the visions, the men sent by Cornelius appeared. The men told Peter about the directive to Cornelius from the holy angel, telling him to invite Peter to his home, so they may hear a message from Peter.
Peter, a Jew, invited the Gentiles to stay and provided lodging for them. This did not fit into the usual Jewish law. Peter was taking the first step to accept Gentiles, as opposed to the Jewish law.
When they arrived at Cornelius’s home, Peter made it clear that he was the messenger and not to be worshipped.
Cornelius had prayed four days earlier and God was answering his sincere prayers and remembering his alms to the Jewish people.
Peter shared the Gospel with them and the Holy Spirit was poured out upon them, Jew and Gentile. They were baptized in the Name of Jesus.
My God shot:
Acts 10:34-35: Peter now understands that God does not show partiality, but everyone who fears Him and does what is right is welcome. Cornelius worshipped the true God, but he had not known Jesus until God set up this meeting! God is still doing this in all of our lives.
Patti — I too love the two connecting visions. And thanks for praying for Cristian!
“God is still doing this in all of our lives.”
Thanks Patti-I love how God gives each of us different insights-so much to learn from these rich passages.
Tuesday: Acts 9:26-43
4. Read, highlight, and share what stood out to you. Do more, or just your God shot. Paul has now become the persecuted instead of the persecutor, escaping death through the help of other believers. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Peter performs miracles of healing and Dorcas is brought back to life. Miracles that authenticate the message.
5. Optional “Barnabas Action Assignment” Ask the Lord to bring to your mind a believer that needs encouragement. Write a note, text, or visit that person and encourage them. Share what you did. Many believers come to mind, in particular some widows. I have bought some cards and will be sending them. I also want to set up a time to have luch with them individually.
Wednesday: Acts 10
6. Read, highlight, and share what stood out to you and why. Or just your God Shot. Or do more. Cornelius was a proselyte, and he had an honorable reputation among the jews. He worshipped God, and his household also followed his righteous example. This chapter, like chapter 9, shows direct intervention/instruction by the Lord through angels, visions, precise directions. It’s marvelous to read how everyone involved was prepared before Peter’s actual visit to Cornelius. I love the obedience shown by all in following the lead of the Spirit. Peter questioned only once when it seemed as if he would be breaking the law, but obeyed when told visit Cornelius. The message he spoke to Cornelius’ household was an encapsulation of Christ’s life (fulfilling prophecy, death, butial, resurrection, Messiah), and that he/Peter was an eye witness. The anointing of the Holy Spirit is reminiscent of Pentecost and POSITIVE PROOF that God was working in these Gentiles. How astonished Peter and his friends must have been.
7. There are civil, ceremonial, and moral laws in the Old Testament. The only ones we still obey are moral. I’m going to give an example of each. What is it?
A. Civil: (Governing Israel as a nation, dealing with property, debts, boundaries…) Deut 22:8 Any house being built had to have a fence/railing on the rooftop to prevent someone from falling off the roof.
B. Ceremonial: (Dealing with worship that points the way to Christ) Leviticus 1:4 Placing your hand upon the head of an animal to be sacrificed, was equivalent to laying your sin upon it. When said animal was offered, you recieved atonement.
C. Moral: (Timeless principles of right and wrong) Exodus 20:3 Only God is to be worshipped and Him alone.
Oops, Peter did obey the command to go to Cornelius, but it was 3 times he saw the vision of the sheet, not once.
Great with the widows. So important.
I like your card ministry. I’m trying to be better about sending cards.
Friday
8 God wants us to be involved in the process of His redemptive plan. My God shot is that just as the Lord used Peter and Paul, I too am part of the continuing story of God’s redemption. I may not be preaching or performing miracles, but as I live my life walking with the Lord, He continues to work through me for His purposes.
Great, Cheryl.
My God shot is how God orchestrates everything — as Patti said, the two connecting visions.
I also appreciate the clarity of civil, ceremonial, and moral laws.
Yes, I appreciate these as well.

The early Christians were called The Way
Paul asks who are you lord?… she states that this is a question I want to keep asking for the rest of my life as I want to know the Lord more and more.
Jesus is in heaven so how can Saul be persecuting Him? Jesus makes it clear that He is uniting Himself with the church. He is the head of the church whereas the head is impacted when the body hurts. As the church is persecuted Jesus feels it, He is compassionate and enters into the pain of His people.
The believers live in peace and power even while they were getting death threats and being persecuted.
When God wants someone, they are His.
My God shot…
Seeing how Christ, who is the head of the church grows His church with the most unusual people in the most amazing ways. I have heard it said that He is still writing Acts today as the church is continually being built in unusual and amazing ways all over the world.
Lord, I pray for our fellow believers who are being persecuted in other parts of the world for their faith. Equip them with Your strength, power and peace as they share the Good News. May they know that as they are being persecuted You are being persecuted and You enter into their pain.
Your entire post speaks beautifully, of the compassion Jesus has for His church and His people, Sharon. Your God shot is so good!! Yes! Amen to your prayer for God’s persecuted people.
Ditto, Sharon with Patti. “Seeing how Christ, who is the head of the church grows His church with the most unusual people in the most amazing ways. I have heard it said that He is still writing Acts today as the church is continually being built in unusual and amazing ways all over the world.”
And I love the prayer for the persecuted church as well.
Love this: He is still writing ACTS foday.

So many good things from TLC! Ask yourself often, “Who are you, Lord?”
All believers are saints! Yes, yes, yes!
God wants to engage us in the process just as he has done with Ananias, so we can experience the joy of being part of it!
The Holy Spirit is the difference maker: peace in the midst of persecution. Wow!
For me, peace in the midst of the uncertainties of life.
Funny: Peter only works in threes.
I like her elaboration on the 3 types of law: civil, ceremonial, and moral.
The “elephant in the room-tribalism. Tirbal diversity but not tribal division.
Her God shot: God has absolute sovereignty over a person’s salvation. We keep praying for our loved ones; God is in pursuit of them, even those who are not pursuing Him.
My God Shot is the same as Tara’s. God chooses whom He chooses.

You must have a railing around your roof balcony so no one could potentially fall off.
B. Ceremonial: (Dealing with worship that points the way to Christ) Leviticus 1:4
The sacrifice is offered to purify the person.
C. Moral: (Timeless principles of right and wrong) Exodus 20:3
You must not have any other gods but God.
Wednesday: Acts 10
6. Read, highlight, and share what stood out to you and why. Or just your God Shot. Or do more.
Cornelius is converted from a religious and moral man to a believer in Jesus Christ. Peter declares the Good News to the Gentiles. The Holy Spirit is given to the Gentiles in a manner we don’t see today-“the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.”-v.44. This is understood from verse 46-“For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God.”-extolling means to praise, glorify, exalt God with enthusiastic reverence bringing a transformative sense of inner peace and joy.
My take away is that 1.God is loving and includes everyone in his plan of salvation, showing no partiality. 2. His work at this time was evident even to Jews who traditionally were taught that they were God’s only chosen people. 3. Those who believe should have a transformed character that glorifies God.
Because of the sin and oppression in our world today, I find it challenging when we have someone like my DIL who professed belief and chose to be baptized, living like a believer for a time and then turns and chooses to live a worldly life satisfying the flesh. We need to use discernment, as in Acts, when accepting new believers. Are they like Simon the magician looking to benefit themselves? Are they like Cornelius wanting to glorify God? We need to be careful who we let into the church. Unfortunately, until the false motives are revealed, we cannot discern the truth. (Acts 8:21)
7. There are civil, ceremonial, and moral laws in the Old Testament. The only ones we still obey are moral. I’m going to give an example of each. What is it?
A. Civil: (Governing Israel as a nation, dealing with property, debts, boundaries…) Deut 22:8 when you build a home, put a railing around the roof so you are not guilty if someone falls.
B. Ceremonial: (Dealing with worship that points the way to Christ) Leviticus 1:4 Lay your hand on the head of the burnt offering to make atonement for your sin
C. Moral: (Timeless principles of right and wrong) Exodus 20:3 You shall have no other gods before me.
I like your description of Cornelius – from moral and religious to a follower of Christ. That fact that he feared God was the beginning of wisdom!
8. Watch, take any notes, and share your “God Shot.”
I love the dramatic change in Saul recorded in these two chapters.
The intervention of God through visions, angels and giving of the Holy Spirit is a wonderful example of his working in this world. He does things that surprise us. Verse 31 says the church grows in persecution. This is not what we expect. We think being devout is what it takes to believe, God shows us that human effort is nothing without his Spirit. People who are living against God have hope for a wonderful surprise.
