I’m boldly asking for your prayers, even to put a reminder on your phone, as I speak Tuesday night at 7:00 Central at a Christmas Tea for 600 women, many unchurched. My heart has always been to see the lost found! May I honor the Lord and say only what He wants me to say, and may hearts be open. They are planning to offer my study, Examining the Claims of Jesus, in January.
This week we’ll do Tim Keller’s Sermon “The Word Made Flesh” and also talk about how to be effective with those He brings to us. I’ve been binging on evangelism books for this culture, and will share a few things I’ve learned this week and following weeks.
Hearts are softened by the love, beauty, and music of Christmas.
Oh Lord, give us Your heart for others, and your Eyes. Help us to really see the people You bring, and seize chances to share Your truth with gentleness and fear.
Below is the sermon and the transcript.

The_Word_Made_Flesh (2)
2nd Sunday of Advent
1. Share a way that Jesus, as the Word, communicated with you last week — through Scripture, through His Spirit, through another of His children, or through His beauty.
Monday: Express the Excitement
Though Keller has the whole prologue read (John 1:1-14) he concentrates on just one verse: John 1:14.
2. What name does John use for Jesus? What does this tell us about who Jesus is and why He came?
3. Eugene Peterson paraphrases “the Word became flesh and blood and moved into our neighborhood…” What insight does this give you into why Jesus came?
Blaise Pascal stressed the importance of reaching the heart – -making others want to know if Jesus is real. I think that is what John is doing here, endeavoring to express the excitement and wonder of knowing Jesus.
4. When I was doing a trial run of my talk for 5 of you on zoom, I was stressing that a real Christian has a relationship with Jesus. Bing and Laura gave me some good pointers and I’ve decided to compare it with my falling in love with Steve — how I’d wake up in the morning knowing something was different, and then I remembered it was Steve in my life — and I would see him, hear him, touch him – -and I was so excited. How does this compare to John’s feeling about the “Word” in 1 John 1:1-4?
5. Realizing that evangelism is a group effort, and you don’t have to say everything, what are some things you might say, from your own personal experience, that might make people want to know if Jesus is who He claims to be?
6. Listen or read Keller through his illustration of how you can’t really know a person until you’ve spoken to him. Stop after he says “you reveal yourself through your word.” What did you learn from this opening of his message?
Tuesday: Clarify Who Jesus Is (And pray for me tonight! 🙂 )
I’m going to be sharing Debbie’s confusion when she studied John 1. She said, “So you are telling me Jesus was born at Christmas yet He created the world? My head hurts!” The Lord brought her out of the painful birth canal in time, but she shared the belief that so many have, that Jesus was just a great moral teacher.
7. How does John 1:14 clarify who Jesus really is? Find everything you can.
8. Are you familiar with C. S. Lewis’s argument that Jesus could not have been a great moral teacher and make the claims he did? It’s the famous: “Liar, Lunatic, or Lord” message. Can you share it here?
9. Read or listen through the top of page 4 or the sentence “This where you know this is true, looking at him because He’s the Word of God.”
A. What stands out to you from this and why?
B. Why does Keller say a watertight argument is not possible? What do we have instead?
Wednesday: The Word Made Killable
I love this portion of Keller’s message for it truly shows the love of Christ. I am going to begin my talk with my testimony (pray I have energy and say it fast — like Paige — for I don’t have loads of time!). I want them to know that just as God heard our cries and came down for us, He heard each of our individual cries and came down for us, individually. I am going to share how empty and repetitive my life felt using some verses from Ecclesiastes such as “What has been done will be done again, there is nothing new under the sun.”
I am also going to how difficult I was as a wife, mother, friend. Like Meg Ryan told Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally: “I’m difficult!”
10. Share a time, either before salvation or after, when you are quite sure God heard your desperate cries and came running.
11. Read or listen to Keller through his x-ray technician story and share what his point was.
Thursday: Religion Versus the Gospel
Lord willing, I will have shared the difference between religion verse the gospel. Julie asked me to share that graph — so here it is:
Best Religion-vs-The-Gospel (4)
This is the graph I laid before Debbie’s husband, Ron, when he yelled at me: “WHAT YOU’VE BEEN TEACHING MY WIFE ISN’T WHAT I’VE HEARD IN CHURCH ALL MY LIFE!” (Below is Ron and Debbie – after Christ!)
I am convinced that many who think they are Christians have not grasped the gospel and do not have a relationship with Him. When Debbie and Ron grasped the gospel, God changed their hearts and lives.
12. Might you use the above graph as a tool with others? Have you ever tried to explain the difference between religion and the gospel with another? If so, share.
13. Read or listen to Keller through the top of page 7 after he has discussed Dick Lucas’s story of the difference between Christianity and world religions and closes with “He [Jesus] is the end of tabernacles and temples and sacrifices and all that. He’s the end of it.” How would you summarize this? What stands out and why?
Friday: True for Me and True For You
Testimonies are powerful for they can’t be disputed. However, what is often said today is “I’m glad Jesus works for you.” The assumption is He can’t be true for everyone. One book I read had this great cover:
Sean McDowell, son of Josh McDowell is an effective apologist with many good books who addresses the fact that many in this generation believe that what is true is just what is true for them. (Many of his kindle books are free on library aps.) They think they can decide who they are and who God is and then it will be true. One book has chapters from different apologists. In this one Brett Kunkle gives this test to help people differentiate between relative preferences and absolute truth. This also reminded me of what Keller says on how we differentiate right from wrong when a culture says something like slavery is right — we can only do it through transcendent truth.
14. What thoughts do you have on the above? Do you think you could show this to a teenager to start a conversation? (The bench press was a bit confusing, but I think he was showing that he wanted to press that many pounds, but that didn’t make it true.)
15. Read or listen to the rest of Keller and share what stands out and why.
Saturday:
16. What is your take-a-way and why?

Last week I ran across these verses in Psalm 145:8.9. A balm to my heart.
The Lord is gracious and merciful. Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness. The Lord is good to all and His mercies are over all His work.
Keller’s key verse in John 1:14 that, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us……” Many years ago when I use to listen to Paul Harvey, he had such a helpful and beautiful story that demonstrates this verse. It is called “A Christmas Story ~ A Man and the Birds”. Here is the 4 minute story with Paul Harvey:

Oh, Nila! what a beautiful story metaphor of the Incarnation! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks for this Nila. I have never heard the Paul Harvey story. Merry Christmas!
Thank you for sharing this lovely story, Nila. I had not heard it either.🙏🌟
I always enjoyed Paul Harvey…thanks for sharing Nila😊
That was beautiful!
Dee,
Are you familiar with “The Rabbit Room”, a ministry founded by Andrew Peterson and friends? They have wonderful resources. One resource that they promote is a series of volumes entitled “Every Moment Holy”~ Liturgy for a broad range of our life experiences.
This prayer for you as you speak on Tuesday (taken from Every Moment Holy):
“Lord may I not so much find the right words
As allow the right words to
find me,
not so much compose as allow you to compose me.”
Nila — I am! And I have Every Moment Holy and love it. I will watch the Paul Harvey short.
Dee, will be praying for you on Tuesday! God be honored as you share the Word. May those who do not know Jesus have their eyes opened to His beauty and love.
Amen to Bing!
1. Share a way that Jesus, as the Word, communicated with you last week — through Scripture, through His Spirit, through another of His children, or through His beauty. I’ve put an alarm on my phone. I have prayed and will pray your words touch the hearts of each woman, and may their ears, hearts and minds be open to the Lord and His grace. I thank God 600 will attend. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We have seen His glory the glory of the one and only Son who came from the Father full of grace and truth. I thank God those words touch my heart and how much I have received because of Jesus Christ.
Oh Judy — thank you!
Praying for your Tuesday Tea presentation, dear Dee. May God be with you every word and every minute . May He give you exactly the words each woman attending needs to hear. Praying that you sense His presence and peace. Praying for all tech to work.
He is faithful! You are loved and prayed for.

Thank you, Patti!
2nd Sunday of Advent
1. Share a way that Jesus, as the Word, communicated with you last week — through Scripture, through His Spirit, through another of His children, or through His beauty.
I have been participating in a Bible Study Fellowship group in their 9-month study of Revelation. There are about 6-10 of us meeting via Zoom every week. We were in Chapter 6 last week and talked about the Lamb being the only One worthy to open the scroll held “by the right hand of him who sat on the throne”. And the leaders and living creatures sang a song of praise and worship to the Lamb! Amazing truth by which to live my earthly life. He is worthy of my praise, and I can live a worshipful life here on earth. I do not have to wait to get to Heaven to do that!
One of the older ladies in our group said that she is not afraid of dying because she wants to see Jesus face to face and give Him all the praise for what He has done for her!
Bing,
I’m doing that same Revelation study with BSF here in Montana 🙂
Nila! That is so good to know. Will you be on Lesson 13 as well this week?
Yes. Lesson 13 this week!
Two of my kids are doing this study in the children’s program. I love it!
Yes, Chris! I wish I had known about this when my daughter was still small. But I sure am very blessed with the study and try hard to keep in step with the study as well as our study here.
I put to pray for your Christmas Tea in my phone. I’m already starting to pray for the women who will attend, that their hearts are being softened and for you to say exactly as the Holy Spirit leads.
Thank you, Dawn!
1. Share a way that Jesus, as the Word, communicated with you last week — through Scripture, through His Spirit, through another of His children, or through His beauty.
One morning I woke up thinking about Jesus and how if He hadn’t gone to the cross that there would have been no alternative for me. I would just go to hell instead. The face of a “devil” was in my dream. Ick.
Also, our church had a Christmas program that was presented on Saturday night. The kids and I sang. There was a comedic skit where two angels (adults), on a cloud contemplated a new assignment that included the “Almighty” going to the “people planet.” They imagine how it would be and how they would be involved. There were to be “special ops, and such.” When the angels “see” that He actually is born as a “baby people” (!), one of them says repeatedly, “How perfect, genuine,” or something like that. It made me think about how perfect it really was.
1. Share a way that Jesus, as the Word, communicated with you last week — through Scripture, through His Spirit, through another of His children, or through His beauty. I’ve been listening to the hymn, “I asked the Lord that I might grow”, on repeat since it was shared here. My heart has been so broken over our many losses the past few years and this hymn has been a means to help me grieve the losses all across my life, and yet hold onto the hope of the Lord’s work in my life. With the help of a ministry, “Hope Outloud”, I’ve learned through a study from them that I’ve been listening to a lie from the enemy and I’m working on using the truth of God’s word against that lie, as I move forward from my grief. I’ve known the truth in my head, but now it’s working its way to my heart. In addition to this, we are beginning to see answers to prayer in the life of my son’s fiance, as her father has been attending church the last two weeks in a row, after probably 20 plus years of absence. Much dysfunction in her family and a long way to go, but this gives us hope. Also, Dee, I wish I could have heard your practice Christmas tea, but I will certainly be praying, for all who attend, to feel the Spirit move in a tangible way, and for you, Dee, to have a calm and peace that your preparation has been complete. ❤️
Thanks so much, Chris!
Chris,
Thank you for mentioning this song. I just listened and it is beautiful, somber and hopeful.
I am curious to know more about Hope Outloud.
Nila, go to hopeoutloud.com and there is a video about the start of the ministry following a horrific car accident and the impact of the Holy Spirit, especially, on their daughter Jen. Joni Erickson Tada made a documentary of their miraculous story. I was privileged to hear their family speak at a women’s conference and I’m currently leading a small group with their study, Leverage Your Life. Basically, speaking God’s truth out loud, against the lies we believe is the key to helping our brain live that truth-is the basis of their ministry. They are sharing the gospel around the world
Just now seeing this update Chris. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you Chris 🙂
Dear Chris, It is so good to see you back here. I am also interested in Hope Outloud. It sounds excellent. I pray that our Mighty God is healing your heart. The pain of loss does not evaporate quickly, yet our God can heal us through it. Praising Him that you are beginning to see answers from Him. His time is so different from our time. I pray that you have a blessed Christmas and that your heart is at peace. May His love overflow in your life for others to see.
Thank you so much, Patti. It means a lot. I keep all of you in my prayers as well. A blessed Christmas to you.
2nd Sunday of Advent
1. Share a way that Jesus, as the Word, communicatedwith you last week — through Scripture, through His Spirit, through another of His children, or through His beauty.
—We were able to go to Wichita and attend our grandson’s Candlelight Christmas Concert. He sings with the College Choir at Wichita State University. The level of performance is very high and the concert is very traditional with amazing Christmas music and always ends with “Beautiful Savior”.
I just sat with my eyes closed taking in the incredible harmonies and perfectly executed dynamics singing about my Lord and Savior and his birth. It was music that spoke deeply into my soul.
How wonderful!
Monday: Express the Excitement
Though Keller has the whole prologue read (John 1:1-14) he concentrates on just one verse: John 1:14.
2. What name does John use for Jesus?
—The Word.
What does this tell us about who Jesus is and why He came?
—Words speak to us. Words show us what is true and give us understanding. Words communicate with us and teach us. Words impact our lives and change us.
Jesus as the Word of God does all of these things.
3. Eugene Peterson paraphrases “the Word became flesh and blood and moved into our neighborhood…” What insight does this give you into why Jesus came?
—Jesus truly became one of us. He fully experienced and lived in a fleshly body just like all other human beings.
—Your point that a real Christian has a relationship with Jesus is so true and I would add that the quality of that relationship reflects in a Christian’s life as to just how deep and meaningful it is. Being around and with a Christian who really knows and loves Jesus is a winsome experience.
John’s excitement is captured in his saying twice in the paragraph of scripture “we proclaim”. He is proclaiming Who and what they saw and heard up close and personal. He is making a strong declaration about Jesus and his purpose is so that others may fully share the joy as he says in verse 4.
5. Realizing that evangelism is a group effort, and you don’t have to say everything, what are some things you might say, from your own personal experience, that might make people want to know if Jesus is who He claims to be?
—I think the situation and the relationship you have with the person dictates where the conversations go in being a voice for Jesus in their lives. I think you have to get a sense of whether you are being a seed planter, a person watering truth that maybe has already been sown in their life or a harvester of helping bring them into the joy of knowing Jesus. It’s true that a person has usually had a number of voices in their life before making a decision to believe and accept Christ onto their own heart and life.
I always want to reflect Him in what I say and do. It’s hard for me to speculate now what I might say outside of the context of the situation.
6. Listen or read Keller through his illustration of how you can’t really know a person until you’ve spoken to him. Stop after he says “you reveal yourself through your word.” What did you learn from this opening of his message?
—You can’t really know a person until you have heard what they have to say because your word is who you are and speaking it reveals who you are. Jesus is the exact representation of Who God is. If we examine Jesus life and words we will find He is perfect. In his person He is the compelling truth of Christianity.
What name does John use for Jesus? What does this tell us about who Jesus is and why He came? The Word
3. Eugene Peterson paraphrases “the Word became flesh and blood and moved into our neighborhood…” What insight does this give you into why Jesus came? That He came to be part part of and share life with me, to be in contact with each other.
In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. It’s directing me to where life is found in Him and life in Him becomes a light for me.
5. Realizing that evangelism is a group effort, and you don’t have to say everything, what are some things you might say, from your own personal experience, that might make people want to know if Jesus is who He claims to be? I’m not good at this. I’m taking Bsf Revelation study which tells what lies ahead for believers and unbelievers so I need to do better. Sometimes just asking the question How’s it going will lead to conversation and prayer but I’m not directly hitting the mark of letting people know if Jesus is who He claims to be.
6. Listen or read Keller through his illustration of how you can’t really know a person until you’ve spoken to him. Stop after he says “you reveal yourself through your word.” What did you learn from this opening of his message? You can know about someone but not really know them until you have had the opportunity to talk to them. In Jesus, the Word, we get the entire picture of who God is. His grace and His truth are on display to help us understand the depth of God’s heart for His Created.
Dee, I came on here to read up on what you and the women here are doing for Advent! I’ve been doing a pretty time consuming Bible study at my church, but we are taking a break now for the holidays. I saw that you are speaking tomorrow night at a Christmas Tea, and I will certainly say prayers for you and for the women who will attend! May the Holy Spirit move mightily! I’m just getting over a respiratory virus that I believe I caught from our little grandson while we were with his family over Thanksgiving. Prayers for protection for your health, too!
Hello, Susan! It is good to see you here. Praying for your recovery from the respiratory virus. Warm greetings to you this Christmas month!
Merry Christmas, Susan! So good to see you here. I will pray for you to recovery quickly from your virus!
Susan — I was just thinking of you the other day — so good to see you here and have your prayers!
Susan, I was praying for you and the other ladies on the blog just the other day! So thankful for you all. Merry Christmas! So good to see you here. ♥️♥️
Monday: Express the Excitement
Though Keller has the whole prologue read (John 1:1-14) he concentrates on just one verse: John 1:14.
1. What name does John use for Jesus? What does this tell us about who Jesus is and why He came?
John referred to Jesus as “The Word”. Jesus is from the beginning and He is God. He came so we can see his glory, full of grace and truth.
2. Eugene Peterson paraphrases “the Word became flesh and blood and moved into our neighborhood…” What insight does this give you into why Jesus came?
Jesus wants me to know Him as somebody who has lived life here on earth, who has rubbed shoulders with me and women like me, and who understands all that I have been through.
Blaise Pascal stressed the importance of reaching the heart – -making others want to know if Jesus is real. I think that is what John is doing here, endeavoring to express the excitement and wonder of knowing Jesus.
I like your illustration here of your love for Steve in comparison to John’s feelings about the “Word”. One can almost “hear” the excitement in John’s voice (much like yours when you talk about Steve). If he were here and talking to me about Jesus, I would be very excited to meet the “Word”. He is the Creator, the One who gives life and is the light. Who wouldn’t want to meet such a man?
4. Realizing that evangelism is a group effort, and you don’t have to say everything, what are some things you might say, from your own personal experience, that might make people want to know if Jesus is who He claims to be?
I would say, “I did not realize that the things of this world have been my master, lord, and savior for many years. I was serving my job, my family, and my ministry, etc. When I finally committed myself to Jesus as my Lord and Savior, my perspective changed. When He is Lord of my life, all these other things became tools by which to serve Him, Him, and Him alone.
5. Listen or read Keller through his illustration of how you can’t really know a person until you’ve spoken to him. Stop after he says “you reveal yourself through your word.” What did you learn from this opening of his message?
I can’t know somebody unless I have spoken to them in person. Their speech would reveal themselves to me.
I have a pen pal who I have never met. Although we have exchanged letters through the years, I still don’t know them because I have not heard them speak to me in person.
I also have a friend who after meeting my daughter said that she now knows my daughter in a way far better than when we were just praying for her. Although she thought she had a good idea of who my daughter was, her knowledge of her was kind of vague until she met my daughter and talked to her for the first time!
Praying for you dear Dee! You will be fine, I know that. Dear Lord, help those hear what Dee is sharing. Help them in their belief. Put a hedge around this group this evening so they are struck by Your presence and want to know more. Amen.
7. How does John 1:14 clarify who Jesus really is? Find everything you can.
Jesus came to us as a real person. He is loving and faithful. He has the glory of the Father. He is the Father’s only Son.
1. Share a way that Jesus, as the Word, communicated with you last week — through Scripture, through His Spirit, through another of His children, or through His beauty.
Darcy was out of town and her dear friend, Anna-Lisa took me to the Ladies Night in little Wakefield. All the stores were decorated and filled with the lights of Christmas. We had a lovely dinner and spent a long time talking about God. Anna-Lisa has the kindest heart and sees only good in others. She said she believed in the spirits and that she was always surrounded by angels, and she believes in a powerful being/creator ~ She said that she was never raised to know God and she did not know the right language to express it. I so see Jesus in this sweet friend and I told her that. I am praying that she will be open to learning more about Him. She said she loves talking about it, so I am praying for the right words and the right time. It is beautiful to watch Jesus draw His children to Him. How I pray that He will be very present when we visit. Darcy has been inspired to listen to the whole Bible on an app, as she drives to work each day. We have had many deep conversations. God is working. Advent is a beautiful Season.
Patti, Beautiful to hear about Anna-Lisa. Praying for her to come into a full understanding of Jesus as her loving Savior.
Oh I love hearing how God is already using you with Darcy’s friends, Patti.
Dear Dee,
I know that we all will be praying for you today and especially at 7:00pm Central time. Praying for you to hear His Word clearly from Jesus; for peace and calm in your heart, knowing that He has gone before you to prepare the hearts of each attender. Praying that your words that the Lord will inspire and bring forth will rest upon and be absorbed by the women at the Tea. What a beautiful idea to talk about falling in love with Steve and the growing love and emotions. It will be life changing for many, dear Dee. The Lord is with you.
—Jesus was the Word of God. He was from God. He revealed Who God was in his very own person and was God’s voice to us. God was speaking through him.
He became fully human and lived as a man among mankind. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness revealing Gods unfailing love and faithfulness to mankind. He showed his glory and revealed God’s glory as his one and only Son. John the writer of the Gospel along with Peter and James actually saw Him in his glorified state of being on the Mount of Transfiguration.
8. Are you familiar with C. S. Lewis’s argument that Jesus could not have been a great moral teacher and make the claims he did? It’s the famous: “Liar, Lunatic, or Lord” message. Can you share it here?
—As I looked up and reread C. S. Lewis’s comments I found it called a trilemma which is an apologetic argument traditionally used to argue for the divinity of Jesus. It was interesting to me that Lewis was not the first to use this form of argument but it has actually been used in various forms by others throughout church history. But Lewis popularized it when he used it on his BBC radio talk show and later it was published in his book “Mere Christianity”. That is where I first read it. Some critics have argued against this form of apologetic argument but I found it to make a lot of sense when truly examined in light of the scriptures especially in an honest examination of the gospels.
As Lewis said at the end of his argument “Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God.”
I agree with him. I do too.
9. Read or listen through the top of page 4 or the sentence “This where you know this is true, looking at him because He’s the Word of God.”
A. What stands out to you from this and why?
-The fact that Jesus in and of himself is our watertight argument for Christianity. Everything hinges on the Person of Jesus Christ.
B. Why does Keller say a watertight argument is not possible? What do we have instead?
—He said something to the effect that God has not given a watertight argument to prove that Christianity is true.
—Instead He has given us a watertight person. Jesus is the compelling truth of Christianity.
—I was awake in the night and prayed for you Dee and will continue to through out today trusting God to have his hand on you and the Christmas Tea tonight.
Thank you Bev — and thank you all for your prayers!
I love this thoughtful post, Bev! Thank you for sharing your research on C.S. Lewis! Great wisdom!
2. What name does John use for Jesus? What does this tell us about who Jesus is and why He came?
He is the Word. Jesus is part of the Trinity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All One, yet individual. The Word was always there.
He came to live as we live, to be born and grow up into a man, to be in community with us, yet to know each of us personally. He experienced all that we experience as humans.
3. Eugene Peterson paraphrases “the Word became flesh and blood and moved into our neighborhood…” What insight does this give you into why Jesus came?
Jesus came so that He may know us and we may know and have a relationship with Him.
How does this compare to John’s feeling about the “Word” in 1 John 1:1-4?
Jesus changes everything in our lives, how we think, how we feel, all of our senses are awakened. He is the light and when the light shines in the darkness, only those who truly know Him can understand that.
5. Realizing that evangelism is a group effort, and you don’t have to say everything, what are some things you might say, from your own personal experience, that might make people want to know if Jesus is who He claims to be?
He will make you see everything in your life and every person you meet in a totally different way. You will be more open to loving others “in spite of” not ” because of” who they are. If we follow Him, we see the whole world through a different lens. Keller wrote a booklet called “The Freedom of Self-forgetfulness”. It is very short and very good. I pray that I can grow to that sense of “Self- forgetfulness” . Not an easy task for sure. I think Keller once said :”Jesus was never offended.” Oh, Jesus, help me to be more like you.
I LOVE your answer to number 5
6. Listen or read Keller through his illustration of how you can’t really know a person until you’ve spoken to him. Stop after he says “you reveal yourself through your word.” What did you learn from this opening of his message?
You can know about someone, but you cannot know a person until you hear them speak to them and have a relationship with Him.
Thank you all for your prayers for last night. I felt it did go well – I did have energy and was only 5 minutes longer than when I practiced, so didn’t drag too much. Their music incredible and I believe hearts were moved. They are offering my study Examining the Claims of Jesus as a follow up in January so now I pray many will do that – -that is a scary step but God can woo them.
So good to hear. I have no doubt that God did a good work in the lives of some who came and that he will continue it with the Bible studies. We serve a faithful God who answers prayer. And He heard every one of our prayers.
Dear Dee, Amen to Bev! The Lord heard and answered all the prayers on your behalf. Thanking the Lord for His faithfulness! So good to hear that they are offering the follow up study in January. I pray that many will partake and come to know Jesus in a more personal way.
Dee,
Grateful to hear that it went well.
10. Share a time, either before salvation or after, when you are quite sure God heard your desperate cries and came running.
—As I think back over many years of knowing God and having Jesus as my Savior since my childhood there are a number of times I called out and was desperate for him to hear my cries and answer. There were times in my marriage and times n my parenting that were painful. The most recent experience was last March when I stood by my daughter-in-law’s lifeless body on the ground after her accident and cried out aloud to God for help. As I knelt down and took her hand I knew God wad present with me but I had no idea that he was in that moment of time doing a powerful work in her heart, mind and body in a powerful interaction between them when I only saw her in an unconscious state. I look back and don’t just see Him as coming running but He was there in an instant. Paul David Tripp refers to God as sometimes using violent grace in our lives. That was a day of violent grace in each of our lives. Then He applied his rescuing grace. Praise feels inadequate for what He did.
11. Read or listen to Keller through his x-ray technician story and share what his point was.
—The x-ray technician had never been on the table to experience the extreme discomfort of the procedure when suffering from something until he had kidney stones and was put in the position of being x-rayed himself. Then he completely understood the experience because he himself lived it and it changed his perspective completely by giving him an absolute understanding from then on for his patients.
So in a like manner when Jesus came down and became human and lived in the flesh he fully experienced everything that humanity has ever experienced and he fully understands. That makes Him the perfect counselor in whatever our trial and need is. He has been there too.
That is such a story with your daughter-in-law.
Dee, The transcript of Keller’s sermon does not come up for me. I just get an error message saying “Nothing Found, Sorry but the page you were trying to view does not exist”. Well maybe not on my iPad but I do believe it exist. 😊 I didn’t worry about that because I was able to listen to the sermon. But now I tried to look at the graph for tomorrow’s lesson and I am getting the same error message. 🤷🏼
I had the problem with the transcript, Bev.
Same.
Would you mind trying from another device and server? It comes up for me so I am not sure what to do!
The link to the transcript isn’t working for several of you so I put in an alternative. So sorry!
The new link works! Thank you.
Thanks for telling me Chris!
8. Are you familiar with C. S. Lewis’s argument that Jesus could not have been a great moral teacher and make the claims he did? It’s the famous: “Liar, Lunatic, or Lord” message. Can you share it here?
I remember the message but not the specifics. We know He wasn’t a liar; things happened and people saw it. He wasn’t crazy either but I can’t remember how that was defended. He must be telling the truth.
9. Read or listen through the top of page 4 or the sentence “This where you know this is true, looking at him because He’s the Word of God.”
B. Why does Keller say a watertight argument is not possible? What do we have instead?
An argument is partly opinion. Although I may have to disagree with Keller on this point. Argumentation in science has to be based on evidence (your actual data). You do have to think hard and put things together. Keller says you have to study Jesus with an open mind. Have you taken it seriously? I suppose if you aren’t talking about science but just a general argument, then you can have an abstract opinion, but you would still want to back it up with evidence so people would be wooed to your side.
We get a watertight person, not an argument. We get to know God through Jesus.
14. What thoughts do you have on the above? Do you think you could show this to a teenager to start a conversation? (The bench press was a bit confusing, but I think he was showing that he wanted to press that many pounds, but that didn’t make it true.) I have a friend who was close to me in high school. She brought me to church with her family. Mine didn’t go. She introduced me to Young Life. We parted ways for college. She was in my wedding and then I didn’t see her for probably 15 years. Her comment to me when I asked how her spiritual life was shocked me. She said, “Yeah, I just never could believe all that.” I shared how I didn’t think I could get through the hard things in life without the belief in eternity, but she had no change of heart. I would love to hear what my teens think of this.
15. Read or listen to the rest of Keller and share what stands out. “It takes a madman to see royalty in a prostitute.” Our faith helps us see the world in a different light. We have hope where others see none. We can be calm, when others are afraid. Our peace is because of the one who is Peace. Lord, help us to be more like the madman every day.
Wow — the one who brought you to Christ turned away. Reminds me of the passage where Paul is thankful for messengers no matter their motive.
10. Share a time, either before salvation or after, when you are quite sure God heard your desperate cries and came running.
I have had several times He had come for me. Some have been big events and some have been smaller. Just this week, two small things happened that I knew was the presence of Him with me. I had misplaced a students test and knew that I had seen it days before. We, as teachers deal with loads of paper! I decided NOT to panic, rather to pray. A few days went by (I continued to be calm) and when I went back to work ”something” told me to look in a drawer. I looked and sure enough, there it was! So cool that I have learned to trust Him to take care of even the small things 😇.
11. Read or listen to Keller through his x-ray technician story and share what his point was.
The technician never realized the pain his patients were in due to their full bladders as they were “jostled around” on the table. Then. He has to have an image taken and was the patient! He knew how they felt at that point and changed his ways.
Jesus came to us in the flesh to experience exactly what we experience as humans.
Love your lost and found story. So good how you just leaned on Him.
Laura,
Your lost and found test paper story is so encouraging to trust Him in those potentially panicky moments!
Thank you 🙂
Laura, I do share your thoughts on loads of paper as a teacher! Neat story about how God takes care of even the littlest things for us.
12. Might you use the above graph as a tool with others? Have you ever tried to explain the difference between religion and the gospel with another? If so, share.
I plan to use it with my boss, as she has described me as being religious before and I want to correct her gently. I am going to put a shrunk down version of it in a nice Christmas card and explain it somehow. I’m still working on how I can explain it without making her feel bad though.
Oh Father, be with Laura as she does this!
To know Jesus is to know everything you need to; He is the answer. There is no need for places to hold services, or present gifts. When He came, He came to end all the pomp and circumstance. Instead, He brought light and love to us so we could see what truly matters in life. He wanted us to share with him in eternity because He loved His creation just that much. Thank you Jesus. ♥️
14. What thoughts do you have on the above? Do you think you could show this to a teenager to start a conversation? (The bench press was a bit confusing, but I think he was showing that he wanted to press that many pounds, but that didn’t make it true.)
I can see where you might think the shirt is red but I see it as a variation of red. Maybe it’s orange red or pink red? I could argue a few of these that way. God exists is one of those. I believe that He exists and base that on the Bible, plus other documentation not just related to Christianity, and the facts of Jesus and His life on Earth. My son would say that the Bible is flawed; written by man. I would counter with what my smartypants mom said to me, “Don’t you think God would make sure it was translated correctly?” But, if you don’t believe in the Bible as being an authentic source, then wouldn’t you say it’s subjective? Some people think it’s a metaphor 🤷🏻♀️.
Also, just because I think abortion is immoral doesn’t mean others do. As Keller said (last week I think) who determines what is moral or immoral? Same with pre-marital sex. Both rely on me having a standard that aligns with your standard. A bit confused here.
As far as sharing with a teen….I think many of these are good “starters” for discussion. If you can’t argue the abortion one (and “win”) because your values differ from mine, then how do you answer the “God exists” one? Don’t you have to have faith that God exists?
What Keller was saying is that we can only know what is right or wrong by transcendent truth. Some Christians thought slavery was right, but the Bible did not. Some Christians think abortion is right, but the Bible does not. Many Christians ignore the poor, but the Bible does not. We must not trust our deceitful hearts. Make sense?
I often contemplate how Bonehoeffer justified being part of a plot to assassinate Hitler as the Bible says murder is wrong!🤷♀️
Yes, that’s true. Yet I also empathize. There is the dilemma when you have to choose between two wrongs as so many did during the Holocaust. Though indeed murder seems worse than lying about hiding the Jews.
Yes, I think I understand now. Thank you.
Jesus is the Word. He became flesh. He came to earth to live among us. People saw Jesus when He was here on earth. They have seen His glory through how He lived His life, healed, and preached the good news. He proved to be the Son of God. He was full of grace and truth.
8. Are you familiar with C. S. Lewis’s argument that Jesus could not have been a great moral teacher and make the claims he did? It’s the famous: “Liar, Lunatic, or Lord” message. Can you share it here?
I heard you refer to this, Dee, a few times. He either lies about himself, is just plain crazy, or is Lord over our lives.
9. Read or listen through the top of page 4 or the sentence “This where you know this is true, looking at him because He’s the Word of God.”
A. What stands out to you from this and why?
Jesus is God’s logic. God has spoken rationally through Jesus Christ. A quote from Lee Strobel, author of “Case for Christ,” says, “Reason and logic led him to faith rather than an emotional experience.”
B. Why does Keller say a watertight argument is not possible? What do we have instead?
One cannot prove that what he believes is true. A watertight argument is not possible. In Christ, we have a watertight person because he is THE WORD.
THURSDAY
I am convinced that many who think they are Christians have not grasped the gospel and do not have a relationship with Him. When Debbie and Ron grasped the gospel, God changed their hearts and lives.
12. Might you use the above graph as a tool with others? Have you ever tried to explain the difference between religion and the gospel with another? If so, share.
I would like to share this tool with others. I do need to prayerfully consider this tool as tried to share it (in my words since I did not have a physical copy of it) one time with a friend and I got stuck. We also got interrupted by her little one who needed attention.
Have I felt abandoned by God? Yes. Jesus did, too. He willingly took on the abandonment of God so He could save me.
Christmas is the end of religion. “all other religions say, if you do all this stuff, you’ll be accepted. And Christianity says, because you’re accepted in Christ, now you do all these things. The religions say, live this way and you’ll be accepted. Christianity says, no, you’re accepted because of what Jesus Christ has done, and now you live this way. It’s exactly the opposite. And so, all the stuff of religion is gone because Jesus is the tabernacle. He himself is the end of tabernacles and temples and sacrifices and all that. He’s the end of it.”
I think this is the summary: religion says… live this way and you’ll be accepted. Christianity says, no, you’re accepted because of what Jesus Christ has done, and now you live this way.
Aahhh…I missed posting this one!
When my mother died, it was pandemic time. We couldn’t travel back to the Philippines and because of the time difference, communication was very difficult and stressful. My daughter was so distressed she couldn’t see her grandma one more time and say a final goodbye. God came running and was my Shepherd throughout those days and many months afterward. He provided generously for the funeral services (which can be elaborate culturally) using friends and family. A friend in the Philippines gave a sizable amount directly to a cousin who expedited several unforeseen circumstances. God is faithful when we call on Him.
11. Read or listen to Keller through his x-ray technician story and share what his point was.
Jesus is the Word, the ultimate, clearest revelation of who God is. The word became vulnerable and killable. Why Jesus is the wonderful counselor? Because the Word became flesh.
The x-ray technician went to the table and experienced what his patients experienced by being on the table. He was more understanding and caring after his experience. Jesus is our wonderful Counselor because He became flesh so He can experience what any human being has and could experience.
16. What is your take-a-way and why? Keller ends with “the ideal smashed a hole and came into the real” -Christmas means anything can change(about us). I remember contemplating the hard things in my life and thinking, maybe I’m just an idealist and shouldn’t hold others to such a high standard, especially my mother for divorcing my father. But, truly, as a Christian, we hold the idealist view with everything since we know, that with Christ all things are possible. Unfortunately, we can’t expect that of others and not even always with ourselves, but we know that we can always trust Christ to do what is impossible for us when it is his will. Also, THE WORD BECAME FLESH, just stands out to me and means more than previously. I see Christ as something different and more special, I guess. I love the idea Keller shares of the author writing herself into the story and how Jesus is like that in a way. Also, the Paul Harvey story where the man would need to become a bird to communicate with the birds that were smashing into his window. Also, I often think of Corrie when she realized Christ was naked, too. He came and knows our suffering.
Love all these pictures, Chris.
Friday: True for Me and True For You
14. What thoughts do you have on the above? Do you think you could show this to a teenager to start a conversation? (The bench press was a bit confusing, but I think he was showing that he wanted to press that many pounds, but that didn’t make it true.)
Some of my questions would be:
who said a particular color is red? What if I am color blind? May I also add that some of my students (Teenagers for the most part) cannot differentiate between objective and subjective? Am I being difficult here?
I do think this would be a good conversation starter.
15. Read or listen to the rest of Keller and share what stands out and why.
John could say that he and others have seen the glory of God through the baby who grew up to be the man we call Jesus. We who came after John are beholding God’s glory in the written Word.
He closed the gap between us and God, the Father through His atoning sacrifice on the cross. Not only has Jesus closed the gap, but He is also God.
His (Tim) advice of seeking Jesus as a wonderful counselor. Jesus understands the yearnings for grace and mercy in our hearts and He offers the grace of forgiveness even when we can’t express it through our words. And the receiving of forgiveness must be the work of the Holy Spirit. Wonderful counselor, indeed!
The scene of the paralytic healed by Jesus in the movie The Chosen came to mind. Jesus asked the man, “Do you want to be healed?” And he looked at Jesus with this yearning eyes. And Jesus told him to get up, take up his mat and walk.
16. What is your take-a-way and why?
“And even if you feel like Aldanza did, that you’re gutter grime, He can come into your life and treat you like royalty because you are both a sinner and a king or queen in Him, and He can change you into His likeness.”
Right now I need a real transformation. I have been caught up in my own comforts and pleasures and haven’t been turning to Him as I should. I almost said that I haven’t been pursuing Him as I should, but I realized that I don’t have to pursue Him because He isn’t running away from me. I just need to turn back toward Him and He’s there.
I just need to turn around and He’s there!
Saturday:
16. What is your take-a-way and why?
I often marvel at how Tim Keller can expound on a verse and make the deepest impression in my heart. He makes Jesus so centered in his messages and I couldn’t help but love Jesus all the more. Thank you, dee, for this study. I was behind the last two weeks but glad there is always a “welcome sign” for me to come in and join. “And the Word become flesh and tabernacled among us.”
I love these songs from Casting Crowns “Is There Room in Your Heart” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEaajBAhNmo&t=39s
and a St. Thomas Anglican Church “Thou didst leave thy throne” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lB9BQ54EeE&t=32s
Love that Casting Crowns song.
I just listened to the hymn that Chris had mentioned. I had never heard it before, but it hit me right where I’m at.
Praying for you, Dawn. I love your transparency. Stay in the Word-psalm 103 is a favorite.
ANNOUNCEMENT — HAVING TROUBLES WITH MY BLOG PLATFORM — HOPE TO HAVE IT WORKED OUT TOMORROW. SO SORRY.
