While this may seem an inappropriate post for Advent, it’s not. We are at war with the Father of Lies. The reason Jesus came was to rescue us from a very real hell, from the lies of the enemy, and from our own deceptive hearts.
You see, as Revelation has shown us, there’s a dragon in our Nativity. So you may want to begin with this, which you’ve seen before:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyC5RHKNBm4
It was 2011, and Rob Bell, who pastored a mega-church of 7,000 and was once was a part of The Gospel Coalition, had just released his book: Love Wins. It taught universalism — the belief that everyone will be in heaven, for in his way of thinking, a loving God would not have a hell. I was at The Gospel Coalition conference that year in Chicago, and I will never ever forget how the Holy Spirit descended over us during an emergency panel discussion concerning Rob Bell’s book and the whole doctrine of hell. Laura asked about finding a video of it and I just did: here it is:
God: Abounding in Love, Punishing the Guilty (Panel)
Honestly, I want to confess that I have struggled with the doctrine of hell, even though I do believe it because I believe God’s Word to be infallible. And it is taught over and over again, including by Jesus. But there’s a part of me, in thinking of those I love who may not embrace Christ, that has pleaded with God: “But torment forever? O Lord – really? What if that person comes to his senses in hell? Lord, is there really no hope ever for him?”
The special session not only helped me with those questions but stirred a revival in my heart. It put me in awe again of a holy God, a just God, and yet a merciful God. I wept, as did many, feeling ashamed for questioning God, and my mouth was stopped. Martin Lloyd Jones defines a Christian as one whose mouth is stopped, quoting Job. Remember when Job was questioning God about His justice? When God answered him, Job said, “I put my hand over my mouth.”
This week we see Jesus as the Harvester. Dr. Campbell and Matthew Henry see both pictures that we are given as descriptions of judgment, where he is taking away the tares and throwing them into the furnace. This goes along with the teaching that we want to be left behind, not taken away. John Stott sees this as two different harvests: first the righteous and then the unrighteous. In any case, we all know there is a time when the wheat and the tares will be separated, and only the LORD knows for certain who are the tares. We are not to make the judgment, for wheat and tares can look very similar. But we can know in our hearts if we are His, and we’ll look on Friday at some ways we can know that. This familiar song closes with the angels giving orders about the harvest:
Rob Bell and Mark Driscoll were both pastors of Mars Hill Churches, and both of those churches were spiritually abusive to their congregations. I recommend the podcast series from Christianity Today called The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill. While they concentrate on Mark Driscoll, it is warning to all churches to choose leaders on the basis of mature and humble character rather than talent. It is a warning to all of us to walk in humility and to be wary of a control idol. Here is a link for those interested:

I’ve thought much, during our study, about the teaching of the rapture. I don’t believe in it any more, but many I respect do. I heard it recently from Casting Crowns, a group I like, in their Christmas song: “While You Were Sleeping”:
As we’re sound asleep by philosophies
That save the trees and kill the children
And while we’re laying in the dark
There’s a shout heard ‘cross the eastern sky
And has carried His bride away in the night
In the night

D. How are the redeemed described in verses 4-5 and what do you think this means?
3. In Mystery Explained, read the first two paragraphs under The Fourth Vision: The Lamb… up to “following a pattern”
A. When does Campbell say Christ is ruling from Mount Zion and how does he support this scripturally?
B. Jehovah’s Witnesses think just 144,000 will be saved. Why does Dr. Campbell think 144,000 is symbolic rather than a literal number of those who are redeemed?
4. Read the rest of the section in Mystery Explained up to the bold: THE FIFTH VISION
A. What is this “new song?”
B. Why does Dr. Campbell think this is not talking about literal chastity? What does he think it means?
C. What else do you learn about these genuine believers?
5. How does this section speak to you and why?
Tuesday: The Three Angels and The Judgment of the Wicked
6. Read Revelation 14:6-13
A. What does the first angel flying above the earth say?
B. What does the second angel say?
C. What does the third angel say?
D. What does a voice from heaven say?
7. Read the paragraph about the 1st angel under THE FIFTH VISION.
A. How does Dr. Campbell say the earth dwellers will respond?
B. What light does the allusion to Nebuchadnezzar give?
8. Read the paragraph about the 2nd angel and explain the symbolism of Babylon’s wine.
9. Read the paragraph about the 3rd angel and explain how the punishment fits the crime.
10. Paige Benton Brown often said “sin is getting what you want.” How do you see this being played out here?

12. How are we to respond to this according to verse 12?
13. What comfort is there in verse 13?
Wednesday: The Harvest
14. Read Revelation 14:14-20
A. Describe John’s vision in verse 14. Who do you think this is and why?
B. What time does the angel tell him it is, according to verse 15?
C. Whom do you think he “harvesting” in verse 16?
D. Whom is he “harvesting” in verses 17-20?
15. Read the first paragraph in Mystery Explained under the sixth vision up to “the vision of the harvest” is repeated.
A. What evidence does Campbell give that the man is Christ?
B. What reason does he give for an angel needing to tell Christ the time has come?
16. Read the rest of Dr. Campbell’s commentary up to The Seventh Vision.
A. What does Dr. Campbell believe both harvest descriptions are of the wicked?
B. How does he explain the number of the lost symbolically?
17. In the John Stott commentary by Michael Wilcox, he agrees that harvest in the Old Testament is usually a symbol of judgment, in the New Testament Christ speaks of gathering in both tares and wheat, bad fish and good, and then separating them. So I do see that this could be two harvests. But in any case, we should be able to find an application. What do you see for your life?
Thursday: Hell is Getting What You Want
Often we hear that a good God would not send anyone to hell. But is that a fair picture? Imagine a man drowning and you threw him a lifeline, but he refused to take it. Then he drowned. Would it be fair to say that you caused him to die?
Another false picture often given is that people are repentant in hell. But again, that is not the picture Scripture gives us. If you think of the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man was in agony, but not repentant. He blamed God for not giving him enough information. He is still treating Lazarus as a servant. We see absolutely no sign of repentance, but still, only anger, blame, and selfishness.
Are their degrees of punishment as there are degrees of reward in heaven? Perhaps. Alysa Childers refers to this article. I’m not sure, but offer it for your reflection:
https://coldcasechristianity.com/writings/are-there-different-degrees-of-punishment-in-hell/
18. Comments on the above? Agree or disagree?
Friday: Assurance
The same John who was given this vision of hell also gives assurance to believers in his first letter. I thought it would be helpful to close with these. Throughout his letter, John has been telling us that seeing fruit in our lives such as loving one another, staying with the original teaching, and obeying God’s commandments should give us assurance that the life of Christ is flowing through us. He makes it clear we still will sin, but have an advocate, yet the progression of our life is to persevere in obedience, truth, and love. Let’s now look now at his closing chapter.
19. Read 1 John 5.
A. In verse 1, what assurance does John give to believers, and what fruit will come naturally?
B. In verses 2-5, he expands on this, repeating some of the fruit that will come, and again, the necessary belief we must have. What fruit should you be seeing in your life, and what do you need to believe?
C. In verses 6-10, John gives the Father’s testimony that Jesus in the Christ. There are three ways that God has testified that His Son is the Christ. What are they?
D. According to verses 11-12, who has the life and who does not?
E. Why, according to verse 13, is John telling us this? What verb does he use that shows we should not doubt?
F. What promise is given in 14-15?
G. As you read 16-17 in the context of chapter 5, and also in the context of the teaching about hell, what do you think is “the sin unto death?” Why is it useless to pray for this?
My personal opinion is that we should not pray that God will accept someone apart from their trust in Christ, for rejecting our lifeline is the only sin that cannot be forgiven, the sin that leads to eternal death. But we can and should pray that his heart would soften toward Christ. John has been talking about counterfeit “brothers” throughout his letter, and I think that is the case here. But it is a mysterious and oft-disputed passage!
H. Find all the assurances John gives in 18-20.
I. How does he close his letter and why, do you think?

1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
I think we are about to tread on scary ground…
I don’t know what to think about the rapture. I have never thought much about it. I have not heard of much of what you speak of today (I don’t know any of the pastors or churches or the books referenced). I do think that there is scripture that talks about being ready at any time (the 10 bridesmaids? With the oil lamps?). I have always thought that He would come at some unknown time and I should be ready because of that scripture. 🤷🏻♀️
I also love Casting Crowns and heard the referenced song a couple of days ago for the first time. I was interested in the line about killing babies…
Indeed, Laura — we are cautioned many times to be ready! Whether it is for a secret return when He raptures only the believers out, or for His second coming — we must be ready. I realize most of the people I quote like Matthew Henry, Martyn Lloyd Jones, Tim Keller, and others are Reformed and those in Arminian churches may never have heard of them — but I think you would agree with their core beliefs. And I agree about the killing babies line. Can’t help but have hopes up that Supreme Court may overturn Roe — but they have disappointed us before, so need to be cautious. I love having you here, Laura.
Thank you Dee.
I wondered if you could post the emergency meeting with Tim Keller etal? I’m curious since I know nothing about that book, Rob Bell, or his belief.
I looked, Laura — but can only find solo speaking sessions from 2011. Rob Bell seemed orthodox but because a progressive Christian. The podcast Rise and Fall of Mars Hill focuses on Mark Driscoll, but Rob is in a similar category.
Dee, my sister, Grace, and her family attended a Reform church in the Philippines. I find that I am more Reform in my convictions than anything else and I am only being “schooled” in it in a more intense way the last 5 years!
I do think that thinking biblically is thinking Reformed, but I know some would disagree. What is the biggest element in your thinking of being Reformed?

1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
Wow! Where to begin? Loved the scripture in 1 John and Job you referenced to… He is the victor over the work of the devil and may I put my hand over my mouth if I question His truth! In reading this and forgive me if I offend anyone, but I see the work of the devil trying to divide the church today through worldly teachings regarding social justice. I have really prayed and struggled through this and quite honestly have been disappointed in some well known pastors take up this mantel over the word/truth of God. Susan brought up churches making politics their religion/focus…I think the same is true of this.
I also loved that song you chose Dee…such rich theology embedded within it.
I remember well Rob Bells book. Had many interesting conversations with those that did and was surprised how they became swept up and taken with it.
There are several good books and articles on the difference between biblical justice and social justice – they are at odds. We do need to pray! You are an encouragement, Sharon!
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
” We are at war with the Father of Lies. The reason Jesus came was to rescue us from a very real hell, from the lies of the enemy, and from our own deceptive hearts.”
In our sermon this morning, my Pastor talked about the war we are in with God for glory—we are fighting for glory for ourselves, and God has offered the peace offering, Jesus. Coming here, seeing these words about war with the Father of Lies, it all proclaims the same truth. Satan has deceived us to seek our own glory, to be independent from God, but going our own way only leads to destruction. God has sent Jesus to be our Rescue.
Honestly, I have heard thje whisper of the Father of Lies too clearly lately. He has been telling me to pull inward, telling me to close off and hold onto my pain, which is a terrible companion. But God has been calling me back out, reminding me that I was made, in His image, for fellowship and community. I have missed this place so much, my heart and soul, has missed it.
2. Read Revelation 14:1-5d
Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a voice from. 4 It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins. It is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These have been redeemed from mankind as firstfruits for God and the Lamb, 5 and in their mouth no lie was found, for they are blameless.
A. What scene is painted in verse 1?
The Lamb stood on Mount Zion, with 144,000 who had His name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.
B. What do you think the lamb, the 144,000, and the mark on their foreheads each symbolize?
The Lamb is Christ, the 144 are Believers, the mark is the seal of the Spirit?
C. How is the song they sing described in 2-3?
“like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder…like the sound of harpists… singing a new song”—there’s something I love about that, a song only we will know, a NEW song!
D. How are the redeemed described in verses 4-5 and what do you think this means?
“those who have not defiled themselves…virgins…who follow the Lamb wherever he goes”
I think this means those who have not given themselves to idols, but have given themselves to the Lord.
I just remembered a beautiful song I recently learned, “Clear the Stgae” by Jimmy Needham (Piper’s church). Oh it brings a flood tears everytime I hear it.
Oh so good to have you back, Lizzy!
It is so good to read what you have written, Lizzy. You have been in my prayers. I did not read this before I answered the questions, but I totally agree with what your Pastor stated. It is exactly what our Pastor has been preaching on. You are such a blessing and you have a pure and thoughtful heart. Have you started your new job?
Lizzy, am glad to see you back here! This is a wonderful place to be nourished spiritually. The lyrics to Needham’s song are beautiful. Indeed, we have to watch our heart-our idols need to have the light of Christ expose them and expunge from our lives. Our worship is more than a song. Anything that I give my love to is an idol.

2. Read Revelation 14:1-5d
A. What scene is painted in verse 1?
The Lamb standing on Mt Zion with the 144,000 who have His and the Father’s name written on their foreheads.
B. What do you think the lamb, the 144,000, and the mark on their foreheads each symbolize?
The Lamb is Jesus,
The 144,000 is the church.
The mark is the Holy Spirit.
C. How is the song they sing described in 2-3?
The sound from heaven was like many harpist playing together, like mighty waves and loud thunder. It was as a new song that only the 144,000, the redeemed could learn.
My Mom had me pick the epitaph for my Dad’s headstone, which had to be very short and I chose “Singing a New Song.”
My Dad loved to sing but couldn’t carry a tune and I envision him now singing his heart out and no worries of being in tune!
D. How are the redeemed described in verses 4-5 and what do you think this means?
Have kept themselves pure as virgins.
Following the Lamb wherever He goes.
Purchased as a special offering.
Told no lies.
Without blame.
I think this means they have been made righteous by the blood of the Lamb.
3. In Mystery Explained, read the first two paragraphs under The Fourth Vision: The Lamb… up to “following a pattern”
A. When does Campbell say Christ is ruling from Mount Zion and how does he support this scripturally?
Christ is already reigning from Mt. Zion, according to Psalm 2:6-7 and Acts 13:33, Rev. 2:26-27, and 12:5.
B. Jehovah’s Witnesses think just 144,000 will be saved. Why does Dr. Campbell think 144,000 is symbolic rather than a literal number of those who are redeemed?
It is symbolic, meaning the complete number of God’s people.
4. Read the rest of the section in Mystery Explained up to the bold: THE FIFTH VISION
A. What is this “new song?”
The new song of the OT, an expression of praise for God’s victory over the enemy.
B. Why does Dr. Campbell think this is not talking about literal chastity? What does he think it means?
Campbell says it is not literall because no where in Scripture is anything negative said about marital intimacy. Believers are sdescribed as virgins for remaining loyal to Christ as His Bride.
C. What else do you learn about these genuine believers?
They follow Jesus, they are pure and holy, set aside, without deceit.
5. How does this section speak to you and why?
I feel incredibly humbled and grateful that though I know I am not pure on my own, and I have had other loves…He has chosen me, He has redeemed me, and I will sing the New Song.
Given the insight Campbell gave on nothing negative about marital intimacy, why do you think Catholics believe Mary was a perpetual virgin and that priests and nuns should be celibate. I’m asking you because of the Catholicism in your past and family and because you are wise.
oh Dee-wow, such a good question. I have to ponder that more. I think about the need to elevate certain humans within Catholicism, like praying to certain saints for certian things. It seems there is a belief that there are actions (like remaining celibate) that can make certain humans more holy, tying into the works-mentality that is so prevalent in Catholicism, and sadly feels like a lot of idolatry to me.
I have a couple I love and respect who astounded us by changing from devout PCA (he was actually a pastor) to Catholicism and are deep into it. Walking with her just was so upsetting — believes Mary was without sin, perpetual virgin, and does now pray to her. So hard to understand and the enemy I believe must be behind it.
Watching The Chosen right now. Love Phil Wickham’s rendition of “Angels from the realm of glory”. There are other great songs. Watched it on December 2, too!
Thanks for the recommendation. I loved the first season of The Chosen. I’m troubled by their connection with the Mormons (vidAngel and The Piano Guys) though they say they don’t have a say in content. What are your thoughts?
Dee, as much as I love The Chosen and promote it some on my page, I am very vigilant about its progress. I also saw and read the article about Dallas thinking about doing his dad’s book series, Left Behind. That is the first “concern” I have had for a while. I do love the artistry of the series, although there are many criticisms about the freedom by which the series place some characters. I am neutral on their connection with the Mormons and the Piano Guys(did not know they were Mormons and again I like some of the music that I have heard from them) although again I do keep my radar up about these things. I pray for Dallas Jenkins and his family and appreciate his heart to proclaim the gospel through the arts. The series is becoming more popular. I pray for Dallas and Darrell (one of his main business partners, I believe) to stay humble and be surrendered to God. To have their minds renewed and not lose the calling which God has placed in their hearts. And that success, pride, and power will not hinder the spreading of the good news through the series. And that the gospel will pierce the hearts of the crew and actors/actresses who do not know Jesus.
Thanks for asking about my thoughts on The Chosen. I know I need to think some more about it. This blog is an important place where I feel that I can freely share, be affirmed, and also challenged. I need the latter especially as I am so used to friends who think like me or just agree with me (smile). My husband and best friend, Julie are probably the 2 who lovingly challenged my thinking once in a while.
That’s such a good solution — to diligently pray for them!
Dee and Bing, I have been a bit nervous about where this series will go, as well. I finally was able to watch the beautiful Christmas program, with the great music last night. There have been a few things that have given me some concern, and I will join you both in diligently praying for them as they continue creating future episodes. I only read one of the “Left Behind” books, but it did not appeal that much to me. I love The Chosen and my grown grandchildren have loved it. I pray that their messages stay Christ centered and true to scripture. In ALL things may GOD be GLORIFIED.
Thank you for this platform where we can share thoughts and concerns.
I love The Chosen too! I’m too ignorant to know what you guys are talking about…hahaha! I don’t know the Left Behind series, or that the Mormons are involved! I just think (for now) it is so beautiful and connecting for people. I guess I’m naive. I’m glad you are making me aware here, so I can be watchful.

3. In Mystery Explained, read the first two paragraphs under The Fourth Vision: The Lamb… up to “following a pattern”
A. When does Campbell say Christ is ruling from Mount Zion and how does he support this scripturally?
From the time of Christ’s resurrection, now and in the future. He quotes Psalm 2:6-7 which covers the future and Paul quotes as being fulfilled in Christ. Joel 2, which is what Peter quoted in his sermon in Acts 2, saying what was prophesied then is happening now. Hebrews 12 says the residence of deceased saints.
B. Jehovah’s Witnesses think just 144,000 will be saved. Why does Dr. Campbell think 144,000 is symbolic rather than a literal number of those who are redeemed?
It refers to those under the lordship of Christ, not some limited number. It’s the “complete” number of God’s people symbolically.
Monday
4. Read the rest of the section in Mystery Explained up to the bold: THE FIFTH VISION
A. What is this “new song?”
It’s a new song sung in the OT expressing victory over their enemies.
B. Why does Dr. Campbell think this is not talking about literal chastity? What does he think it means?
There’s no where else in scripture that sexual relations is considered negative in marriage covenant.
Remaining loyal to Christ as His bride.
C. What else do you learn about these genuine believers?
They are faithful believers who won’t compromise with the pagan culture and demonic forces behind it.
Believers who follow Christ to the cross.
They don’t lie or refuse to betray Christ and His word no matter the cost.
5. How does this section speak to you and why?
It’ exciting, as much to look forward to and convicting, in the importance of how I live for Christ.
Yes — both exciting and convicting.
2. Read Revelation 14:1-5d
A. What scene is painted in verse 1?
A crowd of believers with God the Father and the Lamb. I’m picturing a mountain where God and the lamb are on top and the hundreds of thousands (or more) of believers below them worshiping.
B. What do you think the lamb, the 144,000, and the mark on their foreheads each symbolize?
The lamb is Jesus. The 144,000 represent all believers (12 tribes x 12 disciples). The mark is the seal between God and then; they are His.
C. How is the song they sing described in 2-3?
The sound was like ocean waves, or rolling thunder. So many voices, like harps, all played together. Only those that belonged to Him know the song.
D. How are the redeemed described in verses 4-5 and what do you think this means?
The redeemed are without blame. They have kept themselves clean and followed the Lamb. They are considered the special offering to God and the Lamb. I think these are the ones who represent the bride for the bridegroom because it mentions that they are “virgins” in the NLT.
Great answers, Laura. Our left brained scientist is getting the metaphors! 🙂
Hahaha! Love you 😘!
Love your insights, Laura! Clear and concise!
Sunday:
What stands out to you from the above and why?
I noticed that the image for sickness towards the end of the book “There’s a dragon…) is an emoji with a mask on! How timely that was for the pandemic going on right now. We have a DRAGON SLAYER AND A KNIGHT on our side who is triumphant over evil, sickness, and death.
Thank you for the triumphant song, Come, ye thankful people, Come. So rich in theology and so much comfort for me.
I have read some about Mark Driscoll but not so much about Rob Bell. We must indeed be vigilant. It seems like a rapid rise to success (within 14 years Mars Hill became defunct) was used by the enemy to strike a deadly blow to this church. May God keep us from entertaining thoughts of the applause of man rather than of God. May we be reminded that we have an audience of One whose glory we seek and should uphold.
Regardless of what view I hold, rapture or not, I have to resolve to not be asleep and to walk in humility as you have said here, Dee.
We are blessed to have such a wise woman here, Bing.
Thank you for your wisdom, Bing and Dee. I love this reminder:
May we be reminded that we have an audience of One whose glory we seek and should uphold. Amen to this: Regardless of what view I hold, rapture or not, I have to resolve to not be asleep and to walk in humility as you have said here, Dee.
What stands out to you from the above and why? Both the quote from 1 John and the quote from Job speak to my heart! I stand on God’s Word. What He says is what He does. I may not understand how it is going to happen. Only God knows and He has given us direction and we must follow His Word only. If there is no hell, what of Satan? The Bible has promises for all, I choose Jesus.
Our pastor has been speaking on 1 Peter. I love this verse: 1 Peter 5:8
“Be of Sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Satan is soft, stealthy, intimidating~ after he devours his prey, he roars. I do not want to be his prey. Satan is the father of lies. Main points from our Pastor Keith: Exercise Humility; Resist Satan; Cast all your cares on Jesus; Embrace Grace.
We had many acquaintances who attended Mars Hill Church. It especially seemed to attract the younger crowd. The idea of no hell, seems to appeal to those who have a “Self centric” world view. I almost got sick listening to the short podcast. I looked up Rob Bell on Amazon and he has written many books…..how many direct people to Jesus? to the Word of God? I don’t know, but I will not be reading those books….. I am grateful for the Gospel Coalition.
Laura and sisters — I just found the video of that memorable panel on Rob Bell’s book — I posted above.
Thank you, Dee!!
Thank you, Dee. I will watch the video later. I remember one popular podcaster who is now a progressive Christianity proponent. For a little while, I was interested in what she had to say. But I often had a feeling of unease and now I know it is because of the Spirit’s warning. Indeed, our enemy is crafty and shrewd. His ways are cunning like 666 being short of 777-so near to the complete number but oh so wrong. And pride seems to be the ultimate idol. I often think of Nebuchadnezzar -his story is a great lesson on pride and its downfall.
I am thankful for the church that my husband pastors. We are small but we are seeing the spiritual growth of those who are with us. I pray for my husband often that he will stay humble and not lord over his flock. And I pray for other pastors just the same and to stay rooted in the Word and sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
Great insight on how near 666 is to 777
2. Read Revelation 14:1-5d
A. What scene is painted in verse 1? The Lamb was standing on Mount Zion, and with Him, 144, 000, having His name and the name of His Father written on their foreheads.
B. What do you think the lamb, the 144,000, and the mark on their foreheads each symbolize? The Lamb is Jesus, the Son of God. 144,000 represent the true followers of our Lord. A mark, visible to the Father, that denotes the true followers of the Lamb and the Father. As God can read our hearts, I see that he can read Who we truly are in our minds, soul and spirit.
C. How is the song they sing described in 2-3? A voice from heaven, like the sound of many waters, like thunder and lie the sound of harpists. They sang a new song before the throne and only the 144,000 could learn it.
D. How are the redeemed described in verses 4-5 and what do you think this means? The redeemed are followers of the Lamb. They have been purchased by His blood, so their sins have been washed away. The true believers. They have left the beliefs of the pagan culture.
I see you all are in the midst of deep stuff here and part of me wants to participate more. However, a dear friend’s father has just passed away from a drawn out and difficult passing. He was a believer and we know he is with his Savior. My friend’s mother is taking it very hard! She is exhausted physically and every other way! They were married for over 65 years. My mind is too sad and weary to do much here. The dragon seems very real and powerful this Christmastime. We need Jesus our Dragon slayer more than ever! I would appreciate prayers for my friend and her mother!
Diane, prayers for you and your family and this friend of yours and her mother.
Diane, I will pray for peace and rest for you all.
You have our prayers, Diane. You are a merciful heart – a spiritual gift that I am sorta glad I don’t have as you are sad for others so often so deeply.
You have such a compassionate heart, Diane. What a blessing you are to your friend and her mother. I will pray for all of you. I will pray for a “Kiss from the King” for this sweet woman who lost her spouse and for your friend. Such a difficult time to lose a family member. Our God is greater than that noisy dragon.
Monday: The 144,000 Sing a New Song
2. Read Revelation 14:1-5d
A. What scene is painted in verse 1?
A lamb standing on Mount Zion with 144,000 with His name and His father’s written on their foreheads.
Question: Why is the Holy Spirit’s name not written on their foreheads? Could it be because He is the seal and therefore supports the idea that the mark of God is not a literal mark but a seal that is within us? Just thinking.
B. What do you think the lamb, the 144,000, and the mark on their foreheads each symbolize?
Christ and the church and His seal of protection.
C. How is the song they sing described in 2-3?
It is a new song that only the 144,000 and they sung it before the throne, the 4 living creatures, and the elders
D. How are the redeemed described in verses 4-5 and what do you think this means?
They have not defiled themselves and are considered virgins and they follow the Lamb and were purchased as firstfruits of God and the Lamb. They are the Bride of Christ, the church.
3. In Mystery Explained, read the first two paragraphs under The Fourth Vision: The Lamb… up to “following a pattern”
A. When does Campbell say Christ is ruling from Mount Zion and how does he support this scripturally?
Christ is ruling now in Mt. Zion, God’s eternal city, the place of His presence. Psalm 2:6-7 and acts 13:3-4; Joel Chapter 2; Acts 2 by Peter’s address
Mt. Zion has a 2-fold reference: God’s inaugurated presence through the resurrection and ascension of Christ in the church age and to the fulfilled reality of His presence in the eternal kingdom.
B. Jehovah’s Witnesses think just 144,000 will be saved. Why does Dr. Campbell think 144,000 is symbolic rather than a literal number of those who are redeemed?
They are the 144,000 sealed in rev 7:4-faithful saints of all ages, sealed for ownership and protection, the idea of completeness, and representative of the covenant community throughout all the ages.
4. Read the rest of the section in Mystery Explained up to the bold: THE FIFTH VISION
A. What is this “new song?”
A new song of the OT, which was always an expression of praise For God’s victory over the enemy.
B. Why does Dr. Campbell think this is not talking about literal chastity? What does he think it means?
Nowhere does Scripture assign a negative value to sexual relationships within the marriage covenant. Believers are described as virgins because they have remained loyal as a bride betrothed to Christ.
C. What else do you learn about these genuine believers?
They follow Christ and follow him in the way of the cross. Set aside for God. They refuse to lie and to not betray Jesus no matter what the cost.
5. How does this section speak to you and why?
I am sealed and protected, set apart for God and a bride of Christ. My loyalty is to him and not to the lures of “Babylon”. So grateful that I a sealed and protected. And I pray that my loved ones and many others are, too. Knowing that 144,000 is not a literal number gives me hope because if it is literal, that is not very many considering the millions of people who have gone before us. We wouldn’t be included then!
I love the idea of the seal within us, Bing. God knows us through and through.
Thanks for posting the conversation with the pastors about the book Love Wins!
Would love to start going thru Bible Study with you for the New Year.
Welcome Marita! Our study on Revelation has been going on a long time and we won’t finish til near the end of February — but then we will begin a Lenten study. Perhaps you can jump in then – -or jump in now!
3. In Mystery Explained, read the first two paragraphs under The Fourth Vision: The Lamb… up to “following a pattern”
A. When does Campbell say Christ is ruling from Mount Zion and how does he support this scripturally?
He has ruled over time including now. He supports it through Psalms 2, Acts 13, and the entire chapter 2 of Joel, and Hebrews 12. These passages speak of Zion reigning with the Son as the leader, the judgment and restoration of Zion, the resurrection and ascension of Christ, and His presence in the eternal kingdom.
B. Jehovah’s Witnesses think just 144,000 will be saved. Why does Dr. Campbell think 144,000 is symbolic rather than a literal number of those who are redeemed?
The names and seals on the foreheads are the same as those in chapter 7. These refer to the protection and ownership of believers, all believers who are owned by God. It represents the 12 tribes (OT) and disciples (NT) multiplied together and then multiplied by 1000 to make it complete.
4. Read the rest of the section in Mystery Explained up to the bold: THE FIFTH VISION
A. What is this “new song?”
The new song is one from the Old Testament. It was always an expression of praise for God’s victory over the enemy.
B. Why does Dr. Campbell think this is not talking about literal chastity? What does he think it means?
He says that nowhere in scripture does God assign a negative value to sexual relationships. I’m not really sure what that means? Does it mean that God means for marriages to be conducted with sex, and now He is expecting one without? It would also include only a small number of men.
C. What else do you learn about these genuine believers?
These are the ones who have not compromised themselves to the world. They are virgins in that way. They follow in the ways of Jesus. They are the first fruits; the best. They are loyal. They refuse to lie, or reject Jesus no matter what the cost.
5. How does this sections speak to you and why?
We are set apart from others. I have had a friend say to me once that she felt like we (Christians) were weird. I have recently thought that people would think I am crazy because of my beliefs. I have asked myself if I’m crazy at times too! Maybe because we are in this fantasy-ish book of Revelation??
What stands out to you from the above and why?
The struggle with unbelieving people we love and hell. I know I cannot go to the lengths some do in believing ‘everyones in’ for the reasons mentioned, however it seems that God so desires to show mercy, that it gives me hope.
My boys made declarations of faith when they we young, none walk with the Lord now. I pray that a good work really was begun in them and that he will bring it to completion. I think about the Father in the Prodigal Son parable, he deeply desired both sons to come into the feast.
He is full of compassion and abounding in steadfast love. I don’t want to doubt that he will do what is the most loving thing.
I have been listening to the Rise and Fall of Mars Hill podcast. The story of the trauma inflicted by a narcissistic leader who flees when called to account closely…eerily closely at times…follows the trials my own church has gone through and is still trying to recover from. I have prayed that our former pastor is listening, and that the Lord will allow him to see himself reflected there and repent. It breaks my heart learning that this is not unusual.
I am sorry I checked out last week :/I tried to post yesterday but it was marked as spam?
2. Read Revelation 14:1-5d
A. What scene is painted in verse 1?
Christ firmly established with a large number of his ransomed blameless people singing a new song known only by them.
B. What do you think the lamb, the 144,000, and the mark on their foreheads each symbolize?
I think the lamb is Jesus, and the mark on the forehead is the sign that they are chosen and redeemed, the 144,000? I suppose I want to think that it is figurative?
C. How is the song they sing described in 2-3?
Loud like thunder and great waters but also like harps.
D. How are the redeemed described in verses 4-5 and what do you think this means?
Celibate undefiled by relations with women, following the lamb wherever he goes, purchased, redeemed, set apart, no lie in their mouths blameless.
I am not sure of the meaning the “celibate undefiled by relations with women” bit made me squirm.
Chris — the symbolic approach helps so much. Campbell explained that 12 x 12 (12 tribes and 12 apostles) multiplied is 144 – and a thousand always means a huge number or length of time — so multitudes from the beginning of time. Virgins is also symbolic — meaning they have been faithful and not run to idols.
Monday: The 144,000 Sing a New Song
3. In Mystery Explained, read the first two paragraphs under The Fourth Vision: The Lamb… up to “following a pattern”
When does Campbell say Christ is ruling from Mount Zion and how does he support this scripturally? Now, in the church age and in the eternal kingdom. He cites references.
B. Jehovah’s Witnesses think just 144,000 will be saved. Why does Dr. Campbell think 144,000 is symbolic rather than a literal number of those who are redeemed? He thinks the number stands for completeness.
4. Read the rest of the section in Mystery Explained up to the bold: THE FIFTH VISION
A. What is this “new song?”Praise to God for victory over the enemy.
B. Why does Dr. Campbell think this is not talking about literal chastity? What does he think it means?Because no place else in Scripture is sex within the marriage covenant spoken of negatively – he says it is symbolic.
C. What else do you learn about these genuine believers?
5. How does this section speak to you and why?To be honest, this isn’t like bolstering to me. It feels like he is saying we are supposed to be able to live like we will when we are redeemed now. I get tastes of that, but man…I feel my fallenness…my selfishness every day.
Chris — what Campbell said reminds me of something David Needham wrote — than when we are tempted, say by a raunchy tv program, instead of slapping our hand and saying “Stop it Bad girl!” say — this isn’t who I am – -I am a new creation in Christ — redeemed! A different mindset.

6. Read Revelation 14:6-13
A. What does the first angel flying above the earth say?
“Fear God. Give glory to Him. For the time has come when He will sit as judge. Worship Him who made the heavens, the earth and the sea, and all the springs of water.”
B. What does the second angel say?
”Babylon is fallen-that great city is fallen-because she made all the nations of the world drink the wine of her passionate immorality.”
C. What does the third angel say?
“Anyone who worships the beast and his statue or who accepts his mark on the forehead or on the hand must drink the wine of God’s anger. It has been poured full strength into God’s cup of wrath. And they will be tormented with fire and burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and the Lamb. The smoke of their torment will rise forever and ever, and they will have no relief day or night, for they have worshiped the beast and his statue and have accepted the mark of his name.”
D. What does a voice from heaven say?
”Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them.”
7. Read the paragraph about the 1st angel under THE FIFTH VISION.
A. How does Dr. Campbell say the earth dwellers will respond?
Their response will be fear but not a fear that is because they are in awe of God.
B. What light does the allusion to Nebuchadnezzar give?
Nebuchadnezzar gave glory to God but continued to worship idols. It’s just lip service, not from the heart, not genuine.
6. Read Revelation 14:6-13
A. What does the first angel flying above the earth say?
“Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
B. What does the second angel say?
“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality.”
C. What does the third angel say?
“If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”
D. What does a voice from heaven say?
“…Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”
7. Read the paragraph about the 1st angel under THE FIFTH VISION.
A. How does Dr. Campbell say the earth dwellers will respond?
Those who dwell on earth are those who are hardened in unbelief.
B. What light does the allusion to Nebuchadnezzar give?
He gave glory to God while continuing to worship idols.
8. Read the paragraph about the 2nd angel and explain the symbolism of Babylon’s wine.
Babylon compelled the nations to participate in her corruption.
9. Read the paragraph about the 3rd angel and explain how the punishment fits the crime.
Those who drink of Babylon’s wine, will also drink of God’s wrath.
10. Paige Benton Brown often said “sin is getting what you want.” How do you see this being played out here?
They want to be independent of God, and Hell is that.
11. How does verse 11 make it clear that this is not annihilation but eternal?
“the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever”
12. How are we to respond to this according to verse 12?
We are to keep God’s commandments and our faith in Jesus.
13. What comfort is there in verse 13?
Believers are blessed when they die, and we will have rest.
A. What is this “new song?” The “new song” is an expression of praise for God’s victory over the enemy. John sees the entire company of redeemed saints, but from a heavenly or eternal perspective. (Given that from his earthly perspective most were yet to be born.)
B. Why does Dr. Campbell think this is not talking about literal chastity? What does he think it means? Believers are described as virgins because they have remained loyal as a bride betrothed to Christ. The reference is not simply to wrong sexual acts, but to compromise with the values of the pagan culture and the demonic forces behind it.
C. What else do you learn about these genuine believers? The genuine believers follow the Lamb wherever he goes. This alludes to Jesus’ simple command that believers should follow him in the way of the cross. The “Firstfruits” continues the imagery of virgins, indication that believers are those set aside as clean and belonging to God, whereas the rest of fallen humanity is unclean and unsuitable for an offering.
5. How does this section speak to you and why?
I love how Campbell explains this section. The distinction here is not between a smaller group of believers as firstfruits, to be followed by a larger harvest later, but between the redeemed as a whole and the lost as a whole, the harvest referring to the judgment of God at the very end of time. In essence, it is the refusal to betray Christ, no matter what the cost. I love that analogy. It is simple and true. It addresses all generations. It addresses our idols and how we need to be so aware of the silky, sweet way Satan can slither into our lives. Today, if you think sin/evil acts are bad, then society might call you judgmental. We need to be aware.
6. Read Revelation 14:6-13
A. What does the first angel flying above the earth say?
The first angel says to fear God, to give Him glory and worship Him; praise His name! He will judge us.
B. What does the second angel say?
Babylon is falling because nations have followed her in immorality.
C. What does the third angel say?
Anyone who accepts the beast will receive the wrath of God. They will be tormented with sulfur burning in front of God. It will go on forever and ever. They will have no relief.
D. What does a voice from heaven say?
It says, “Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on…” they will receive blessings and will rest from their hard work.
7. Read the paragraph about the 1st angel under THE FIFTH VISION.
A. How does Dr. Campbell say the earth dwellers will respond?
They will respond the same way they did before, in chapter 11, where they accepted God out of fear not awe. they continued to be beholden to their idols even though they accepted Him.
B. What light does the allusion to Nebuchadnezzar give?
Nebuchadnezzar was the one who excepted God but continue to pray to his idols. His kingdom represents Babylon.
8. Read the paragraph about the 2nd angel and explain the symbolism of Babylon’s wine.
The wine refers to “Babylon’s drink”, where governments are involved in political, economical, and social corruption for economic and political security. Hmmmm…..here we go again with the idea that governments are corrupt today, in modern times for gain for “themselves.” Again, look what is going on in Austria, Germany (!), and Australia today. Jeremiah speaks of the “… nations going mad to drinking Babylon’s wine.” I do believe the nations today have gone mad!
9. Read the paragraph about the 3rd angel and explain how the punishment fits the crime.
Because the lost have selfishly had Babylon’s wine, they will now have to drink the wrath of God. It fits because in the Bible, the reference to God’s anger is drinking the wine. This wine will last forever and is full strength.
Weirdness on my post this morning 👆. It disappeared and then reappeared when I refreshed. Unfortunately I was unable to correct some mistakes-spellings that autocorrect (I dislike auto-correct!!!) made. Please forgive!
I think a book could be written about crazy auto corrects!
Tuesday
8. Read the paragraph about the 2nd angel and explain the symbolism of Babylon’s wine.
This Babylon is a correlation to the Babylon Nebuchadnezzar so proudly built but it isn’t a literal city but rather a symbol of all the evil world governments under the control of the beast. It has nothing to do with thinking the end times will take place in the Middle East and between Babylon and Israel. This is between spiritual Babylon and the church. That the nations were made to drink her wine shows that Babylon compelled the world governments to participate in her political, economic and social corrupt systems so they could be politically secure.
14. Read Revelation 14:14-20
A. Describe John’s vision in verse 14. Who do you think this is and why?
Jesus-“one like a son of man”, with a crown,
B. What time does the angel tell him it is, according to verse 15?
the hour to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is fully ripe
C. Whom do you think he is “harvesting” in verse 16?
The Redeemed.
D. Whom is he “harvesting” in verses 17-20?
Unbelievers.
15. Read the first paragraph in Mystery Explained under the sixth vision up to “the vision of the harvest” is repeated.
A. What evidence does Campbell give that the man is Christ?
Jesus said He would come on clouds to judge (Mt. 24:30), the golden crown
B. What reason does he give for an angel needing to tell Christ the time has come?
The command comes from the Father, as Jesus said He does not know the time or hour, this may allude to that still being true.
16. Read the rest of Dr. Campbell’s commentary up to The Seventh Vision.
A. What does Dr. Campbell believe both harvest descriptions are of the wicked?
Both visions show an angel coming from the temple to reap. Other occasions in the Bible that speak of an hour of judgment. I didn’t follow his explanation very well here.
B. How does he explain the number of the lost symbolically?
It refers to a completed and final world-wide judgment (4, number for earth, squared and multiplied by 10 squared means completeness).
The call to be faithful, awake, ready, not give into weariness or grow lazy in my walk.
6. Read Revelation 14:6-13
A. What does the first angel flying above the earth say?
“Fear God and give Him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the springs of water.”
B. What does the second angel say?
“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’[a] which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.”
C. What does the third angel say?
“If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.”
D. What does a voice from heaven say?
“Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.”
7. Read the paragraph about the 1st angel under THE FIFTH VISION.
A. How does Dr. Campbell say the earth dwellers will respond?
They will continue to be hardened in unbelief.
B. What light does the allusion to Nebuchadnezzar give?
Nebuchadnezzar gave glory to God while continuing to worship idols.
8. Read the paragraph about the 2nd angel and explain the symbolism of Babylon’s wine.
Babylon’s wine refers to her compelling the participation of the nations in her corrupt political, and social system in return for economic and political security.
9. Read the paragraph about the 3rd angel and explain how the punishment fits the crime.
Because they have drunk Babylon’s wine, they will also drink the wine of God’s wrath- a figure of speech for suffering God’s anger.
10. Paige Benton Brown often said “sin is getting what you want.” How do you see this being played out here?
Do you want yourself as lord? Then that is what you get. God will give you what you need but since you chose not to receive it, then you get what you want which is against what He wants to give to you.
11. How does verse 11 make it clear that this is not annihilation but eternal?
They are completely destroyed but the torment is forever and eternal restlessness.
12. How are we to respond to this according to verse 12?
To persevere in spite of present sufferings
13. What comfort is there in verse 13?
Our faith will bring endurance along with the wisdom to understand the identity and nature of the beast. James 1:5 (wisdom) I john 4:1 (test the spirit)
Wednesday: The Harvest
14. Read Revelation 14:14-20
A. Describe John’s vision in verse 14. Who do you think this is and why?
a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand.
Jesus? Does the sickle mean it is time for the harvest-a separation of wheat and tares?
B. What time does the angel tell him it is, according to verse 15?
Put in your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come.
C. Whom do you think he “harvesting” in verse 16?
The redeemed? Or is it of the lost?
D. Whom is he “harvesting” in verses 17-20?
The earth dwellers who did not believe-the object of His wrath.
15. Read the first paragraph in Mystery Explained under the sixth vision up to “the vision of the harvest” is repeated.
A. What evidence does Campbell give that the man is Christ?
Jesus is called the Son of Man who would come on the clouds of heaven, the golden crown identifies Christ as King.
B. What reason does he give for an angel needing to tell Christ the time has come?
The angel is a messenger from the Father since Jesus Christ does not know the final hour until he is informed by the Father.
16. Read the rest of Dr. Campbell’s commentary up to The Seventh Vision.
A. What does Dr. Campbell believe both harvest descriptions are of the wicked?
An angel is featured for both visions, when the word” hour” occurs, it refers to divine judgment (9 other occasions); and Joel 3: 13 talks about the sickle for the harvest and the treading of the winepress.
B. How does he explain the number of the lost symbolically?
It is a completed and final worldwide judgment -outside the beloved city, Jerusalem.
I can live life confidently knowing that God is just. Although sin continues to bring sorrow, devastation, sickness, death, a time will come when these things will be no more.
I also take comfort that the one who will gather the tares and wheat and separate them is our own wise, good, loving, and sovereign Savior.
And since the tares and the wheat have been allowed to grow together, I really shouldn’t be surprised at the tare-related works of the enemy so present among us. May we be the wheat and continue to flourish strong and hardy amidst the winds and any type of pestilence that threatens to destroy us.
So timely right now as we see the devastating effects of tornadoes in several states on top of the virus ravaging many. As I type, we are watching the weather as they are calling for windstorms today in our part of the state. I am praying that God superintends the weather and command it to be still and be quiet. The winds are under His command and sovereignty! We are planning to carol tonight and please pray for our safety and wellbeing. May the carols bring the encouragement our members need at this time.
From Bing:And since the tares and the wheat have been allowed to grow together, I really shouldn’t be surprised at the tare-related works of the enemy so present among us.
Remind me how close you are to those the tornado devastation.
I will pray for safety for all of you, Bing. There is such a big storm going through your area. May God uphold each of you as you sing His Praises.
Bing, we’re you able to carol tonight? How’s the weather?
Dee, Patti, and Laura, we are far from the tornadic activity but we had conditions for it yesterday. The wind picked up at around 445 pm. My husband and I just got into the church building when rain poured and winds were gusting above 40 miles an hour! We waited for the storm to abate, went out with 3 hardy members, and braved the strong winds to carol at several people’s houses. We could hear the wind while standing outside people’s doors-boy, though they were glad to see us, they couldn’t believe we were out! I felt like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz except I did not get blown away! My friend, Cindy who was in the military, kept on shielding me from the wind and we would giggle and laugh at how fun it was being out during the storm. I wasn’t sure if God was laughing at us or shaking His fingers LOL! He must have sent 5 strong angels to guard us!
We ended the evening by staying at church, calling people, and caroling through their speakerphones. My husband even played the piano so that was a treat for the folks. As crazy as this adventure sounds, we enjoyed the time with each other and our older folks seemed to really appreciate our efforts.
Thank you for your prayers.
Bing, I am so thankful all went well on your caroling adventure. It really does sound like an adventure story!! It sound like you had fun and were appreciated by those you saw and heard you. Ending the evening in the church and caroling through speaker phones sounds like a safe and lovely time! I thought about you all so much last night. It was a very stormy night in so many place! Definitely like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz! The Lord has His angels guarding you!!
That does sound like crazy fun!
Tuesday
9. Read the paragraph about the 3rd angel and explain how the punishment fits the crime.
Campbell says because the nations have selfishly drunk of Babylon’s wine they will also drink the wine of the wrath of God.
10. Paige Benton Brown often said “sin is getting what you want.” How do you see this being played out here?
They chose to serve their own personal desires which in turn is serving the dragon and the result is suffering God’s anger…being separated from Him.
11. How does verse 11 make it clear that this is not annihilation but eternal?
Their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night.
12. How are we to respond to this according to verse 12?
We must endure persecution patiently, obey His commands and maintain our faith in Jesus.
13. What comfort is there in verse 13?
Those who die in Christ are blessed, will rest from their hard work; for their deeds follow them.
19. Read 1 John 5. A. In verse 1, what assurance does John give to believers, and what fruit will come naturally?
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. And those who are His will love other believers.
B. In verses 2-5, he expands on this, repeating some of the fruit that will come, and again, the necessary belief we must have. What fruit should you be seeing in your life, and what do you need to believe?
Fruit that should be present-Love for God, obedience to His commandments. Believing that Jesus is God, gives me victory to overcome the world, including self-protection and fear, and leads me to love as He loves.
C. In verses 6-10, John gives the Father’s testimony that Jesus in the Christ. There are three ways that God has testified that His Son is the Christ. What are they?
the Spirit and the water and the blood
D. According to verses 11-12, who has the life and who does not?
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. Believers in Jesus Christ have life, unbelievers do not.
E. Why, according to verse 13, is John telling us this? What verb does he use that shows we should not doubt?
He is telling us this so we can KNOW we have eternal life, so we can have full assurance. I am hit by how often I live out of a place of insecurity and unbelief. I worry about what others are thinking of me or about my circumstances changing. I sometimes fear what lies ahead. But if I behold Him, and truly let these words sink down deep, know that I have eternal life, all things should grow dim. I just need a daily, constant, perspective shift.
F. What promise is given in 14-15?
If we ask anything according to his will He hears us, and if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of Him. I know the key here is asking “in His will” and not my own. I love the assurance that He hears me. So often as a child I felt unheard. So often I can feel unseen. But He is attentive to my heart. So much comfort in that. I know that His will is best. I find myself now often using Dee’s prayer “unless You have a better idea…”. I know in my head I only want His plan, and in my heart I know that is best. I know that trying to find peace or comfort in anything else that I may ask for is futile. He is all I need. I pray I will seek only that One thing, to be in the presence of the Lord all the days of my life, gaze upon His beauty. I feel convicted of so often seeking other things as my hope. Help me to behold You Father and be changed.
I think if we are honest we all live to a degree in a place of insecurity, but those who have been rejected by parents suffer acutely from that.
Lizzy, so true for me as well-“I just need a daily, constant, perspective shift.” I will just be going my merry way and then, boom! I would be rehearsing an old hurt or memory and have to shake my head and change my perspective. Indeed, it is a comfort to KNOW we have eternal life as I cannot trust my feelings at times to convince myself of the truth of God’s Word.
2. Read Revelation 14:1-5d
A. What scene is painted in verse 1? The Lamb and 144,000 standing on Mt. Zion.
B. What do you think the lamb, the 144,000, and the mark on their foreheads each symbolize? The Lamb=Jesus, the 144,000 the church, the mark is the seal of God or ownership by Him.
C. How is the song they sing described in 2-3? A new song that only they know.
D. How are the redeemed described in verses 4-5 and what do you think this means? They are celibate. They follow the Lamb. They have been purchased as first fruits to God.They are blameless. I think that it refers to the church, but I’m not sure what the celibacy is about.
3. In Mystery Explained, read the first two paragraphs under The Fourth Vision: The Lamb… up to “following a pattern”
A. When does Campbell say Christ is ruling from Mount Zion and how does he support this scripturally? Psalm 2 6-7 and Acts 13:33
B. Jehovah’s Witnesses think just 144,000 will be saved. Why does Dr. Campbell think 144,000 is symbolic rather than a literal number of those who are redeemed? Because it is 12 tribes X 12 apostles X 1000 (which is completeness) which means all of the chosen of God from Old Testament times and New Testament times.
4. Read the rest of the section in Mystery Explained up to the bold: THE FIFTH VISION
A. What is this “new song?” The song of praise when God has victory over the enemy.
B. Why does Dr. Campbell think this is not talking about literal chastity? Because the bible has never portrayed sexual relations between a man and his wife in a negative light. What does he think it means? Faithful believers who have not committed sexual sin (porneia) with the harlot Babylon.
I’ll bet you were a teacher’s dream student, Dawn.
Quite the opposite!
Dawn, congratulations on your new job! Would it be something similar to your old job?
Doing the same thing (sterile processing), but in a much better environment and an increase in pay!
10. Paige Benton Brown often said “sin is getting what you want.” How do you see this being played out here?
Well, if you drink the Babylonian “wine” then your get your just desserts (the wine/wrath of God).
11. How does verse 11 make it clear that this is not annihilation but eternal?
It says the lost will be tortured forever and ever.
12. How are we to respond to this according to verse 12?
We need to have endurance.
13. What comfort is there in verse 13?
We are blessed and receive rest.
A metaphor from Laura!
Well, if you drink the Babylonian “wine” then your get your just desserts (the wine/wrath of God).
Hahaha!!
14. Read Revelation 14:14-20
A. Describe John’s vision in verse 14. Who do you think this is and why?
It is Jesus. He is referred to as the “Son of Man” and that is what Jesus called Himself. Also the golden crown shows reverence.
B. What time does the angel tell him it is, according to verse 15?
He says it is time to harvest.
C. Whom do you think he “harvesting” in verse 16?
I think He is harvesting believers.
D. Whom is he “harvesting” in verses 17-20?
I think he is harvesting those who are not believers.
15. Read the first paragraph in Mystery Explained under the sixth vision up to “the vision of the harvest” is repeated.
A. What evidence does Campbell give that the man is Christ?
Same as I did above 👆; the reference to the “Son of Man” and the crown.
B. What reason does he give for an angel needing to tell Christ the time has come?
I wondered how the angel seemed more authoritative when I read this, but Dr. Campbell says the order is coming from God the Father. He backs it up nicely by using Jesus’ statements in Scripture (Mk) that only the Father will know the time for judgment.
16. Read the rest of Dr. Campbell’s commentary up to The Seventh Vision.
A. What does Dr. Campbell believe both harvest descriptions are of the wicked?
I didn’t understand that’s the harvests are both of the wicked. It seems to me that one is of the saved and one of the lost. However here is how he describes it:
– he says that since the angels are sent from the temple, they represent God’s judgment
– the phrase “…the hour to reap has come…” refers to divine judgment
– both seem to fulfill scripture (Joel) which says to put the sickle in because the harvest is ripe…
B. How does he explain the number of the lost symbolically?
4 (the earth), squared, multiplied by 10 squared, for completeness.
Do you mean whether I will be in the lost or the saved category? Not sure how it would apply otherwise? I am hoping for the saved column! I try my best to do life “right.” I fail a lot though. My heart is usually in the right place. I think that matters to Him mostly. I have not rejected His authority over my life, I believe in Jesus’ birth, life, and death. One thing I miss from the Methodist church was saying the Apostles Creed. Our church doesn’t read from the Hymnal (?) as we did growing up; I guess it’s “old school?” I like it because, just like in baptism, the whole church is making a statement about their faith. It is unifying. Here it is, for us all to ponder…(I’m deep into the Mary character of my dance right now! Ha!)
Traditional Version
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;*the third day he rose from the dead;he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Laura — I think you should have confidence you are in the saved column, for He is who you are trusting in. I think the application for me is that wheat and tares grow together, look alike, and so I need to leave the judgment to God. Sometimes it is so clear — as I’m sure you are wheat and Hitler was a tare — not because of works, though works do evidence faith, but because of trust. But with some it is simply hard to tell. That’s why God said He would do the harvesting.
Thanks for that explanation!
Wednesday
14. Read Revelation 14:14-20
A. Describe John’s vision in verse 14. Who do you think this is and why?
He sees a white cloud and someone sitting on it. John describes that one “like the Son of Man, with a gold crown on his head and a sickle in his hand. He seems to be describing Jesus.
Why it seems to be Jesus is because he is “like” the Son of Man which is what Jesus is called and wearing a golden crown…He is king!
Wednesday
B. What time does the angel tell him it is, according to verse 15?
It’s the time of harvest.
C. Whom do you think he “harvesting” in verse 16?
The whole earth.
D. Whom is he “harvesting” in verses 17-20?
The rebellious world.
15. Read the first paragraph in Mystery Explained under the sixth vision up to “the vision of the harvest” is repeated.
A. What evidence does Campbell give that the man is Christ?
He brings up Daniel’s vision of the Son of man and Jesus said He’d come on the “clouds of heaven.” The golden crown identifies Christ as King.
B. What reason does he give for an angel needing to tell Christ the time has come?
It’s not that the angel is superior to Christ but that he brings a command that comes from the Father.
16. Read the rest of Dr. Campbell’s commentary up to The Seventh Vision.
A. What does Dr. Campbell believe both harvest descriptions are of the wicked?
They are both judgements. Both visions have an angel coming from the temple to reap and elsewhere in Revelation such orders from God’s presence bring only judgement. “The hour to reap has come” should be compared to the other times “hour” occurs and refer to judgement. Both appear to be a fulfillment of Joel 3:13…a description of the final judgement of the lost is illustrated in each of the series of judgements and visions.
B. How does he explain the number of the lost symbolically?
The great wine press of the wrath of God.
I go back to verse 12 in this chapter and may I humbly endure persecution patiently, obeying His commands and maintain my faith in Jesus.
Thursday
18. Comments on the above? Agree or disagree?
I have always agreed with this but then I think how much will it matter when you’re in a place of torment for eternity?
It’s so hard to think about, isn’t it!
It sure is Dee, it breaks my heart when people reject our wonderful Savior! And I continue to pray 🙏 and seek opportunities.
Thursday: Hell is Getting What You Want
Are their degrees of punishment as there are degrees of reward in heaven? Perhaps. Alysa Childers refers to this article. I’m not sure, but offer it for your reflection:
https://coldcasechristianity.com/writings/are-there-different-degrees-of-punishment-in-hell
18. Comments on the above? Agree or disagree?
Perhaps. The article was good in bringing many Scriptures to support his premise.; that is different degrees of punishment and degrees of rewards. I know God is just so whatever punishment or reward one will receive will be just. I know He is holy so there is a hell.
And I also think that when I receive my reward, I will just be so grateful that I do not need to look at somebody else’s. I may also receive a reward that I never would have thought of! And since everything will be perfect in Heaven, should I really care that much about these rewards? Would I be disappointed if I do not receive the reward I thought I should receive?
And should I be asking myself while here on earth why I am doing “good” things? Am I motivated by accumulating rewards in Heaven? Shouldn’t I just be content with pleasing the Lord in whatever I do? I Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. ; Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
And I know that some of my work on earth may fall under the stubble category. and maybe I do not fully understand the meaning of rewards here.
I Corinthians 3:13-14 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
14 If any man’s work abides which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
Absolutely I think we should be content with pleasing the Lord in whatever we do. Though I often think I could live life over, but know at the beginning what I know now!
G. As you read 16-17 in the context of chapter 5, and also in the context of the teaching about hell, what do you think is “the sin unto death?” Why is it useless to pray for this?
In general, I think the sin unto death is willingly choosing to not believe Jesus and being willfully unrepentant. Where it gets hard for me is regarding those with mental disorders who may not have the ability to discern. I remember a young adult in our church who was severely autistic and became very atagonistic towards God and then died shortly after. I feel like there is a grace given there—that maybe God knows what they would have chosen if they had all mental ability and He judges based on that. At least I know He is just and He desires all to come to repentance. He is love and I trust in who He is.
H. Find all the assurances John gives in 18-20.
Everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning.
Jesus protects His own, and the evil one does not touch him.
We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
I. How does he close his letter and why, do you think?
“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”
It reminds us to be active in keeping our faith. We must “keep” ourselves from idols, there is a responsibility on us to choose to turn away. The most important thing is to love God, worship Him alone, and then all the fruit of the Spirit will flow from us.
I think it is significant that John reminds us we are “children”. God is our Father, He is to be esteemed and respected, honored as Father, and a Father provides, protects. It is when I forget His atributes as a perfect Father that I turn to other things for comfort or self protection.
I feel like there is grace there too, Lizzy — just because that’s the character of God. Just have to trust Him!
I started listening to The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill podcast on the commute to my new job. It’s very interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Mark Driscoll although it seems like I should have.
I was blessed to start a new job this week at a surgery center, no weekends, no holidays and no late shifts :). I know a few people there so I’m not a total stranger either.
Dawn–so happy to hear about your new job, answer to prayer!!
That sounds hopeful Dawn. May the Lord surround you there!
It’s an extraordinary broadcast with a warning for all of us.
So thankful for this answer to prayer for you, Dawn. It sounds wonderful. God is so good.
Wonderful news, Dawn, about your new job at the surgery center!
Congratulations on the job Dawn! Sounds like a good place for you.
I too have been listening to the Mars Hill podcasts. I think I have heard of Mark Driscoll before, but in a good way. When I pulled up his new church in Arizona and saw his picture, it was familiar. Not sure why? The new church sure looks good on the outside. This is where knowing scripture is so important! To be able to discern the troubles within a church might be difficult. I may ask my pastor what he knows about Mark Driscoll.
In listening to the Rise and Fall of Mars Hill, I am literally sickened to my stomach. It reminds me of Jim Jones where sex became the center, which really became about power for both Jim and Mark…very cultic. Jim Jones belonged to the Christian Church and my husband’s mother had 3 brothers who were pastors in that denomination and yes, it affected their ministries.
I like what the one guy said, “you can become part of the problem if you think something like this could never happen to you.” If that is our thinking than we have become arrogant which can easily blind us. Oh, may I be humble and I ask the Lord what Paul did in Colossians 1:9… God give me complete knowledge of Your will and give me spiritual wisdom and understanding.”
I didn’t know that about Jim Jones.
I found so much that is applicable in that podcast, particularly the need to walk in humility and to pray for that for the leaders in our local church.
Dee, it also opened my eyes to give me understanding of why some friends and family are struggling with the church, evangelical’s and Christian’s. They talk about being abused mentally within the church and some want nothing to do with it and others are working through it. It so saddens me and yes, how important it is to pray for the leaders of our local church.
I love this verse, Sharon. Oh, how I need that!
Yes, the whole Mars Hill story is so upsetting and it caused so many problems for the true church is this area. People seem so attracted to cults, because they cater to the desires of doing life “our way” not God’s way. The Mars Hill philosophy spilled over in to a couple of other large churches in this area and they are now completely gone. Yet, those true Christians within those churches have gone on to open new Christ centered churches in this area. Praise God for that.
I was going to ask you Patti if you know of any churches affected by Mars Hill? I fear a relative I have in the Puyallup area may of been affected, not directly but I wonder if they got caught up in the stories and have made them their own, if that makes sense?!
6. Read Revelation 14:6-13
A. What does the first angel flying above the earth say? Fear God, and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth and sea and springs of waters.
B. What does the second angel say? Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who has made all the nations drink of the wine of the passion of her immorality.
C. What does the third angel say? If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image and whoever receives the mark of his name.
D. What does a voice from heaven say? Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!
7. Read the paragraph about the 1st angel under THE FIFTH VISION.
A. How does Dr. Campbell say the earth dwellers will respond? Their terror was a human fear, but not a repentant fear in awe of God.
B. What light does the allusion to Nebuchadnezzar give? He gave glory to God, buy continued to worship idols.
8. Read the paragraph about the 2nd angel and explain the symbolism of Babylon’s wine. The nations were made to drink her wine refers to the Spiritual Babylon; refers to the participation of the nations in “her” corrupt political, economic, and social system in return for economic and political security.
9. Read the paragraph about the 3rd angel and explain how the punishment fits the crime. Because the nations have drunk of Babylon’s wine they will also drink the wine of God’s wrath.
10. Paige Benton Brown often said “sin is getting what you want.” How do you see this being played out here? Sin is “self”ish and there will be a price to pay for it. Laura’s answer to this is so good! Thank you, Laura!
11. How does verse 11 make it clear that this is not annihilation but eternal? The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day or night.
12. How are we to respond to this according to verse 12? We are to persevere in our faith in Jesus and keeping the commandments.
13. What comfort is there in verse 13? Jesus paid our entry fee; the price of our eternity. Blessed are the dead, who die in the Lord from now on.
14. Read Revelation 14:14-20
A. Describe John’s vision in verse 14. Who do you think this is and why? Jesus is coming on a cloud, the sickle in His hand represents judgment. To separate the wheat from the tares?
B. What time does the angel tell him it is, according to verse 15? The hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is ripe. Does this mean a pre-destined time or that the evil on earth abounds so it seems hopeless for the followers of Christ. This is a mystery to me….
C. Whom do you think he “harvesting” in verse 16? I found these verses a bit confusing. It sounds like the saints, followers of Christ, the church, those saved in Christ are The Wheat. The sinners, the evil are the tares.
D. Whom is he “harvesting” in verses 17-20? The tares. Those who have rejected following the Lord and are receiving the Wrath of God.
15. Read the first paragraph in Mystery Explained under the sixth vision up to “the vision of the harvest” is repeated.
A. What evidence does Campbell give that the man is Christ? The son of man will come to judge and redeem. The golden crown identifies Christ as King.
B. What reason does he give for an angel needing to tell Christ the time has come? The harvest of the earth is fully ripe.
16. Read the rest of Dr. Campbell’s commentary up to The Seventh Vision.
A. What does Dr. Campbell believe both harvest descriptions are of the wicked? Dr. Campbell gives three reasons why this is a judgment of the wicked. 1) The angel coming from the temple. 2) The hours to reap has come refers to other occasions in the book in which “hour” occurs and refers to divine judgment. 3) Both pictures to be the fulfillment of Joel 3:13~The harvest is ripe.
B. How does he explain the number of the lost symbolically? 1600 is figurative, speaking of a completed and final world-wide judgment.( 4, the number of the earth, squared and multiplied by 10 squared to represent completeness.)
I need to keep my eyes on Jesus. Follow Him; live according to His Word; be alert and always ready for His return and/or when He calls me home.
6. Read Revelation 14:6-13
A. What does the first angel flying above the earth say? “Fear God and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who made the heaven and the earth, and sea and springs of waters.”
B. What does the second angel say? “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who has made all the nations drink of the wine of the [fn]passion of her sexual immorality.
C. What does the third angel say? Those who received the mark of the beast will drink the cup of God’s wrath and be tormented forever.
D. What does a voice from heaven say? ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!’” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “so that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow with them.”
2. Read Revelation 14:1-5d
A. What scene is painted in verse 1?
The Lamb, Jesus, standing on Mount Zion with the 144,000 who have His name, and His Father’s name written on their foreheads.
B. What do you think the lamb, the 144,000, and the mark on their foreheads each symbolize?
Jesus is the Lamb, the 144,000 is the church (or all believers), and they are “marked” spiritually as belonging to Him.
C. How is the song they sing described in 2-3?
The song sounds like roaring waterfalls, or many harps being played together, or rolling thunder. The song is a new song that was only able to be learned by the 144,000, or those who had been redeemed.
D. How are the redeemed described in verses 4-5 and what do you think this means?
They are “spiritually undefiled, pure as virgins, they have been purchased from among the people of the earth as a special offering to God and to the Lamb”. No false charges can be made against them. I think this means they are the redeemed, the ones who stand before God as a pure, spotless bride, and ones that “there is now no condemnation in Christ”.
3. In Mystery Explained, read the first two paragraphs under The Fourth Vision: The Lamb…up to “following a pattern”.
A. When does Campbell say Christ is ruling from Mount Zion and how does he support this scripturally?
Campbell, citing the apostle Paul, says that Christ is already reigning from the heavenly Mount Zion. Paul quotes Psalm 2:6-7 in the book of Acts, saying that this passage from the Psalms has been fulfilled in Christ.
B. Jehovah’s Witnesses think just 144,000 will be saved. Why does Dr. Campbell think 144,000 is symbolic rather than a literal number of those who are redeemed?
The 144,000 were also referenced in Rev 7:4, and it was demonstrated there that this number refers to the faithful saints of all ages, and this number speaks of the complete number of God’s people.
4. Read the rest of the section in Mystery Explained up to the bold: THE FIFTH VISION
A. What is this “new song”?
It is the same as the “new song” sung in the Old Testament, a song that was always an expression of praise for God’s victory over the enemy.
B. Why does Dr. Campbell think this is not talking about literal chastity? What does he think it means?
He doesn’t believe it is literal virginity because nowhere in Scripture is sexual relations within marriage viewed negatively. He believes it means believers being described as virgins because they, as like a faithful bride, have remained loyal to Christ.
C. What else do you learn about these genuine believers?
These genuine believers are ones who have refused to commit acts (literal) of sexual immorality and have refused to compromise with the values of a pagan culture and the demonic forces behind it.
5. How does this section speak to you and why?
It’s kind of exciting to picture Jesus standing with all believers with the song swelling and growing and signifying God’s victory over our enemy.
6. Read Revelation 14:6-13
A. What does the first angel flying above the earth say?
The first angel proclaims the Good News to all people, saying “Fear God, give glory to Him. For the time has come when He will sit as judge. Worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all the springs of water.”
B. What does the second angel say?
The second angel is shouting, “Babylon is fallen – the great city is fallen – because she seduced the nations of the world and made them drink the wine of her passionate immorality.”
C. What does the third angel say?
The third angels warns that anyone who worships the beast and his statue, or who accepts his mark on their body must drink the wine of God’s wrath, and they will be tormented with fire and burning sulfur in the presence of the Lamb and His holy angels. They will be given no relief day or night. God’s people are encouraged by this angel to endure persecution patiently and remain firm to the end, obeying His commands and trusting in Jesus.
D. What does a voice from heaven say?
John is told to write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. They will be given rest from all their toils and trials, and their good deeds will follow them.
Like this from Susan:
It’s kind of exciting to picture Jesus standing with all believers with the song swelling and growing and signifying God’s victory over our enemy.
7. Read the paragraph about the 1st angel under THE FIFTH VISION.
A. How does Dr. Campbell say the earth dwellers will respond?
He writes that their fear or terror is likely just a human fear, and not genuine fear of God. These are people who are hardened in their unbelief, and Campbell finds no evidence that there will be last minute, mass conversions, though a few may respond.
B. What light does the allusion to Nebuchadnezzar give?
King Nebuchadnezzar was afraid, and gave glory to God, yet continued to worship idols. His kingdom is the forerunner of the harlot Babylon, writes Campbell.
8. Read the paragraph about the 2nd angel and explain the symbolism of Babylon’s wine.
Campbell writes that the nations who were “made to drink” of “her wine” refers to her compelling the participation of the nations in her corrupt political, economic, and social system in return for economic and political security. He references Rev 18:3 which talks about their “intercourse” with the harlot equated with their participation in her commercial affairs. He also says that what is pictured here is drawn from Jeremiah 51:7, where the nations go mad from drinking Babylon’s wine. In this way, we see the economic and social connotations of “porneia” come into view.
9. Read the paragraph about the 3rd angel and explain how the punishment fits the crime.
Campbell cites other references in Revelation where the punishment fits the crime. Since the nations have selfishly drunk of Babylon’s wine, they will also drink the wine of God’s wrath, which is a metaphor for suffering God’s anger, and His anger will be mixed full strength.
10. Paige Benton Brown often said “sin is getting what you want”. How do you see this being played out here?
They did not want God, they wanted the “wine” of Babylon. They wanted to live as if God did not exist, as if He had no ownership over their lives, and as if they would never be held responsible for their actions. So being played out here is the logical consequences of living like that – an eternity of torment which is caused by being permanently separated from God, from His goodness, from His light, from all that is good.
11. How does verse 11 make it clear that this is not annihilation but eternal?
Their torment will go on forever and ever, and they will have no relief day or night.
12. How are we to respond to this according to verse 12?
We are to be encouraged by this to persevere with patience when we are persecuted, to remain firm to the end. We are to obey Him and keep trusting in Him.
13. What comfort is there in verse 13?
God calls us blessed, and our blessing isn’t removed when we die. We will receive eternal rest from all our toils and trials, and God will know of our good deeds.
7. Read the paragraph about the 1st angel under THE FIFTH VISION.
A. How does Dr. Campbell say the earth dwellers will respond? They may praise God out of fear, but there won’t be mass conversions.
B. What light does the allusion to Nebuchadnezzar give? He gave God glory, but continued to worship idols.
19. Read 1 John 5.
A. In verse 1, what assurance does John give to believers, and what fruit will come naturally?
Everyone who believes in God is a child of God. Love will come naturally.
B. In verses 2-5, he expands on this, repeating some of the fruit that will come, and again, the necessary belief we must have. What fruit should you be seeing in your life, and what do you need to believe?
By loving God and keeping His Commandments. By doing so we defeat the evil in the world and achieve victory through our faith.
I need to remain faithful to Him. Others will see this and come to the Father also. This would be the fruit.
C. In verses 6-10, John gives the Father’s testimony that Jesus in the Christ. There are three ways that God has testified that His Son is the Christ. What are they?
1. Through His baptism in water.
2. Shedding His blood on the cross.
3. The Spirit confirms it through His testimony.
D. According to verses 11-12, who has the life and who does not?
Believers are given eternal life. Those who have the Son have this life, those who do not have the Son do not have the eternal life.
