Leave it to Tim Keller to show me something new from this familiar Christmas passage. Just as he has said that if you were making the story of Jesus up, you would not have had women be the first at the empty tomb, likewise, if you were making this story up, you would not have had Magi (astrologers, magicians, interpreters of dreams) be the first to travel to see Jesus. The Bible tells us to have nothing to do with those who practice the magic arts. They were to be put to death! (Lev. 20:27 and Deut. 18:10-12)
So why does the Bible say women were at the empty tomb first?
Why does the Bible tell us Magi went to find Jesus?
Because it really happened historically.
They traveled for months, perhaps years, following the star.

Keller also implied they were not believers until they saw Jesus, and then they bowed down and worshipped him.

Tuesday: Wisdom of the World Always Dated
This made me think of a conversation with my stylist concerning surgeries performed on adolescents who self-identify as the opposite sex. I told her doctors were beginning to have second thoughts on this as suicide had increased instead decreased. I told her I thought it was a passing phase and doctors should refuse. She said, “But if you were the doctor, wouldn’t that put you in a hard place if both the child and parents want it?”
I said, “No, because I would have made a promise to do no harm. ”
I didn’t bring in the Bible, but I do agree that everything that is not eternal is eternally out of date.

Christmas Eve: Wisdom of the World Only Partially Wrong
My favorite Professor at Covenant Seminary was Jerram Barrs, who stressed so strongly that all wisdom comes from above, and that you can find some beautiful examples in secular books. Each year in my Christmas letter, I share a favorite book and movie. This year I chose a secular movie: Lilly – the true story of Lilly Ledbetter’s fight for equal pay as a woman. It also humbled me to see that Republicans stood against her and the Democrats supported her, for I so often am upset with the Democratic leaders.
5. Listen through Keller’s second point
-
- What stands out to you and why?
- Define common grace and give a few examples of it.
- How do you see it in the lives of the Magi before they saw Jesus?
- Share a secular book or movie that touched your soul as a child or an adult

A. What stands out to you and why?
B. How does Keller illustrate this with the Magi?
C. How has this been true for you?
Friday: Kathy’s Thoughts
This was so interesting to me. I was blessed with a very wise father, very well read, and very moral. Yet he didn’t come to the Lord until the end of his life. He turned me into a reader by reading wonderful books to me, though not necessarily Christian. His his wisdom guides me all the time. Some of the quote, that he may have gotten from wise men, guide my life. Here is a sampling of so many:
- Give each task the time it is worth — no more, no less.
- Don’t make important decisions precipitously.
- There is always hope when you listen to both sides, if you attend only to one, errors harden into prejudices.
- You do not have appointments, but commitments, so keep your word and be punctual.
- Don’t judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in his shoes.
7. Listen to the end.
A. What stands out and why?
B. How do you choose a good doctor or dentist? Is it important to you that
they be a believer? Why or why not?
C. Kathy used the quote “Eat the meat and spit out the bones.” I’ve also heard, based on Exodus 4:22 that sometimes the Lord allows us to “plunder the gold of the Egyptians.” Secular people may have skill and even wisdom, and we can learn from them, but we need to sift. Give an example of a few wise sayings that are not from Scripture, or of books not from Christians, or from secular mentors.
D. Keller said we learn from community — and we certainly have here. Can you give a specific example of something someone taught you:
-
-
- From this blog?
- From an unbeliever?
- From another country?
- From the opposite sex?
- From a true believer but from a very different camp — perhaps Catholic or Pentecostal
-
I can have trouble receiving from a pastor who seems harsh to me or where I have a strong difference in a gray issue — perhaps where they stand on women in ministry, or if tongues are for all believers, but I do want remember I can still learn from them!
8. Keller said: Sin in me means I am never as good as my right theology should make me. But common grace and the image of God means the non-Christian is never as bad as his wrong theology should make him. Point?

Sunday:
How have you experienced “Immanuel” (God with Us) this week?
Despite experiencing some really tough circumstances this week, I have been lifted up and supported here in community with my sisters in Christ. Thank you all for that. This difficulty in our marriage has many layers and we stumble through the hard things sometimes, but currently are back to managing in a more healthy way.
Prayer request, for my daughter who is 20 weeks pregnant with her third child. She has had cholestasis in all her pregnancies, but not until the end and the babies were delivered a little early with no complications, but she is having symptoms now and this is very concerning. She sees the doctor tomorrow morning. Prayers for wisdom for the doctors and that baby can stay in long enough and be safe. It is very dangerous for baby as mom’s liver is not functioning properly and essentially toxins are building up in her body.
Oh Father, we come to you on behalf of this little one whom You knit together in her mother’s womb. Please give the doctors wisdom, put Your hand on both mother and babe, and give peace. In Jesus Name I pray
Chris, thank you for sharing. I do agree-this blog is such a supportive community. I know I could come here and share what’s in my heart, and know I would be prayed for. Lord, grant wisdom for the doctors as Chris’s daughter sees them tomorrow. Keep her and the baby safe. We confidently pray that you will be with them and will guide their steps.
Father God, I join the others in praying for this fragile mother and her precious baby. Lord, be with Chris’s daughter and her baby every moment. Give the doctors wisdom, and keep the baby and mother safe in Your Hands, dear Father. We ask for a miracle in this very difficult and critical situation. We give this to You outright Father in Heaven. Inn the Mighty Name of Jesus, we pray.
Chris, so good to hear that you are managing your marriage in a more healthy way and I continue to lift it up to the Lord.
I agree with these prayers for your daughter and this precious baby…may God protect and watch over them both.
Dear Jesus, thank You for helping Chris and her husband manage their marriage well at this time. We know You are in the middle of each of our stories. Please continue to guide them when it is necessary. I pray in agreement with the others here for the mommy and baby who need some care. Thank You Lord, for blessing us with Your love. Amen.
Thank you all so much for your continued prayers. It means so much to me.

How have you experienced “Immanuel” (God with Us) this week?
I have experienced Immanuel on a newer and deeper level, in the sense that there is a greater awareness of His work and perfect timing. To share one thing: yesterday, I went to a store looking for a gift item for a very dear friend. I was hoping I could find it at a sister store, as I have already bought one for another friend. But alas, it was not there! The two friends I was shopping with suggested I stop by a Home Goods store nearby. I did not want them to have to wait for me to search for a gift that may not be there. But they insisted they had time to wait, and off they went to find parking in the crazy zoo-like parking lot. We did agree that perhaps I could find something else as a gift B.
Anyway, I did find some alternatives and was on my way to the checkout when, upon rounding an aisle, I saw the box I wanted! I know I said it here before, but I did cry (again!) I can almost hear Jesus saying, “There, there, Bing! I know you wanted this one for your friend!”
And Dee, I do agree with this: “Leave it to Tim Keller to show me something new from this familiar Christmas passage.” He has so much insight given by God.
Love this story and the love of your friends for you!
Oh, Bing! What a God we have. I love how He cares about the details. Yes, your friends sound lovely.🙏
How sweet! Friends and Jesus! Good story, Bing.
I love this. Slowing down long enough to make note of such a simple way the Lord provides for us, and yet it shows his great care in the small things. I love this and your friends being willing to wait in the zoo-like parking lot. 🩷
Chris, these friends are tops! They asked me to call them when I am done so they can pick me up in front of the store! So glad because it was cold.
1. How have you experienced “Immanuel” (God with Us) this week?
I suppose I have experienced Immanuel in the rest after the busy build up to Christmas this year. It was a relatively slow week. My husband and I are celebrating our 36th wedding anniversary today (22nd). I decided to take off work last Thursday and just hang out with him. It was nice. Our son took us to a very yummy lunch. We really didn’t do anything and that was good!
Congratulations! We got married in the same year! We also celebrated our 36th anniversary this year. I love that you did nothing but took the day off to hang out. That’s where we are at as well. Slow down and enjoy quiet. 😊
Congratulations, Laura. What a perfect way to spend the day. Relaxing and reflecting, just hanging out together. 💞🙏 May God bless you and give you many more wonderful years together. Cherish each moment.
Yay, Laura! 36 years of God’s faithfulness to you and your husband. Congratulations!
2. What did Balaam prophesy in Numbers 24:17?
The Israelites would be thoroughly blessed, in all ways; never a need, and government.
3. Read Matthew 2:1-12
What thoughts do you have after first reading this passage and why?
I still wonder about the star and how it led them. I know there is a comet with a 2000 or so year orbit. Our youngest son was born on March 4, 1997. The comet Hale Bopp was in the sky that morning when we drove to the hospital. Could it be the same? I know the calendar has had a change within the span of time, but knowing Jesus was actually born in the spring (I think), it makes me wonder if it might have been a comet instead of a “star.” I haven’t had time to research it, but maybe when I retire!
Why do you think they went to Herod for wisdom?
I’m guessing they went because they thought the king would have the information they needed since he was the ruler of the land.
How did the chief priests know where the Messiah was to be born?
They read the prophecy.
Why is Herod in such a panic?
I guess he thought a new Jewish king might cause trouble for him?
How did the Magi respond when they saw the child?
The magi fell down and bowed to worship Him.
Keller says this is when they received true wisdom on who this King was. Do you agree or not? Explain.
I’m not sure. So little is said, and I read 5 different versions. I guess kings would not bow to others though, people usually would bow to them.
How do you see God’s hand in this story?
God “visited” them in a dream and told them not to go back to Herod.
I always wonder about the star as well. Curious that the wise men were willing to travel on this extravagant journey to follow it. It seems like Keller says something about two planets being aligned at this time, which could have looked like a big star? I’m not very good with Astronomy. I remember a comet being visible when I was younger. My great-grandmother was a young girl when the comet was visible and then it came again before she passed. My dad made a big deal about it.
Yes — Jupiter and Saturn — appeared 3 times that year with the last on Dec 2. Interesting!
Monday: The Text
2. What did Balaam prophesy in Numbers 24:17?
I do not know precisely but suspect the star may point to the star the wise men followed and the scepter pointing to the dominion of Jesus over the sin in this world.
3. Read Matthew 2:1-12
What thoughts do you have after first reading this passage and why? The wisemen refer to Jesus as being born the king of the Jews and this is precisely what is posted on a sign at his hanging on the cross.
Why do you think they went to Herod for wisdom? They were from out of town and probably expected him to be found at the palace, where a king should reside.
How did the chief priests know where the Messiah was to be born? The prophecy is found in Micah 5:2-there was no doubt about where Christ would be born.
Why is Herod in such a panic? Though he is old, he feels his kingdom is threatened by this potential new king and all Jerusalem was troubled-so though they did not understand the spiritual side of this new king, there was a great fear among all the people. How mysterious that these travelers came from afar, following a star, to find this new born king and that an ancient prophecy is being fulfilled. Herod also no doubt was troubled by his conscience as he took Jerusalem by force, spilling much blood.
How did the Magi respond when they saw the child? They fell down and worshipped him, then opening their treasures, offered him gifts. Keller says this is when they received true wisdom on who this King was. Do you agree or not? Explain. The text doesn’t offer much in way of explanation as to their understanding but the fact that they fall down and worship a babe in a cottage and give him extravagant gifts, fulfilling prophecy, shows something in the way of their belief that this is certainly a culmination of their traveling so far and what they came for-they must have wondered themselves at the outcome of this travel and the dream at the end where they are warned to take another way home to avoid Herod.
How do you see God’s hand in this story?
I see God leading the wise men with a star and directing them with a dream to the place this mysterious Jesus is born-born to a virgin. All Jerusalem is stirred in the story by the prophecy being fulfilled. Only God can orchestrate so many events in the lives of his people and even in those who choose not to believe, like Herod. Though Herod is king of the land and took it by force, he has no power of the true King.
Sorry my text is such a mess-it did not look like this when I typed it! Herod has no power OVER the true king.
I wondered about all Jerusalem with him being upset — someone in our church compared it to Hitler or Putin being upset — walking on eggshells if you are in their proximity
That makes sense, especially since he was so ruthless in his taking of the throne. But also, the prophecy surely would be unsettling if one did not have the hope that we do-hope in earthly kings is unsettling for sure!
Love this Chris : Though Herod is king of the land and took it by force, he has no power of the true King. So true!
Sunday:
How have you experienced “Immanuel” (God with Us) this week?
—It truly is a wonderful time of the year and not for the reasons given in the popular song. I find that as a believer there are constant reminders in all I read and listen to on my own, from being in church, concerts and the extra input from advent material. The solid reminders from Scripture of the birth of Jesus and the purpose of His coming to earth to take on the flesh of humanity are in the forefront right now. He came to be among us one of us all with the purpose of dying for our sin to bring about redemption for our souls.
Again I feel refreshed by these things and the depth and meaning of “Immanuel” (God with us) stands out.
We currently have a strong measure of physical and emotional pain and suffering going on around us in own personal circle of friends but we seek to bring Jesus into these situations because He is truly “with us”. I am not a Pollyanna type of person at all but to focus on Jesus and his presence with us in all the struggles truly results in joy. He always lifts me up by his presence. He is here and He is working among us.
It is a wonderful time oof the year.
I’m headed out this morning for prison tonite, and then journeys through the midwest. Appreciate prayers.
Dee, you amaze me with your energy to travel and entering the prisons. Prayers for safety but also for hearts to melt to Jesus in the prisons and for you to have the words from the Spirit that souls need to hear. Glad for all the snow melt and warmer temperatures for your travel. May the Lord bless you richly with much joy as you serve.
Dear Dee, How I thank God for you! I will be praying for you daily. May God be with you, as you minister to those in need of Him, in the prison.
May God give you His peace, grace and protection. Are you driving cross country alone? May God keep you in His care every minute. Praying for safe travels, good weather, no car problems and good health.
So appreciate your prayers — I needed them for the weather which is much better, thankfully today. But I made it to the prison and it did so so well. They are really growing in the Lord!!!
Yay for growth in the Lord, Dee!
Dee, I am glad to hear that the time at the prison went well. God is good!
Dee, What wonderful news about these women growing in the Lord. So thankful for God’s protection for you. You are so brave and I am so thankful you have good weather.
‘Father, thank you for this good news for Dee and for your protection for her as she travels. Lord, please continue to protect Dee, as she travels to family. Keep her in Your tender care. We thank you and Praise you Father God, for all you do for each of us. In the Name of Jesus we pray.
Thank you dear Patti! I so hope your time is blessed with Darcy and Marcus — I assume that is where you will be.
Bev, I am always encouraged by your perspective of God with us.
I love your encouraging and joy filled post, Bev. It is wonderful to focus on all HE is always, but especially at this Special time of the year.
Sunday:
1. How have you experienced “Immanuel” (God with Us) this week?
My Scripture writing this month has been verses about “The Light Has Come.” This verse stuck with me…“For You are the fountain of life. The light by which we see.” Psalm 36:9. A commentary from Poole said, “Water is the sweetest in the fountain.” In other words, the closer to the source of the water, the sweeter.
I have felt His presence through being in His word and this song keeps running through my mind that I learned as a child…Every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before. Every day with Jesus I love Him more and more. Jesus saves and keeps me and He’s the One I’m waiting for. Every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before.
After reading this verse, it brought newness to an old song. God is good!
Love your focus on the Light, dear Sharon. This is where I want to live: “Water is the sweetest in the fountain.” In other words, the closer to the source of the water, the sweeter.
I love how the Lord weaves our stories and his love for us in them. Beautiful insight, Sharon. Thanks.
How I love you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see!
2. What did Balaam prophesy in Numbers 24:17? Balaam was a pagan, but God gave him prophecy. The star comes from the lineage of a Jacob, and scepter, is perhaps Jesus, a ruler, from Israel. This could be a foretelling of Jesus as the ultimate King/ Ruler. Does the “star” have a dual meaning? Jesus and the Star of Bethlehem. He says he sees Him now but not near. This implies a prophecy for the future. I have a sense that Cheryl might have an interesting answers on this.
3. Read Matthew 2:1-12
What thoughts do you have after first reading this passage and why?
I think of the Magi, as following Astrology, are they referring to the prophecy of Balaam? Verse 6 quotes the prophecy from Micah. The configuration of the planets may have caused a unique star. I always wonder how long the bright star was in the night sky, as it took them two years to arrive in Jerusalem. I feel that God did many miracles here, with the star being seen only by the wisemen. It specifically directed only the wisemen. God was very present, when they followed the star and it stopped over the house where Jesus was. The wisemen truly sensed God’s presence. God warned them in a dream not to return to Herod. Jesus and His family were protected.
Why do you think they went to Herod for wisdom?
Herod secretly sent for the Magi. He wanted to know the exact time the star appeared in the sky, to figure out how the Christ child would be by then.
How did the chief priests know where the Messiah was to be born?
The chief priests knew the prophecy of Micah.
Why is Herod in such a panic?
He feared that this King that the wise men came to worship, would overthrow Herod’s kingdom.
How did the Magi respond when they saw the child? Keller says this is when they received true wisdom on who this King was. Do you agree or not? Explain.
The Magi fell to the ground and worshiped Him. They sensed the presence of God. I agree. After they saw the king, he sent them to Bethlehem. The star, which they had seen in the east, went before them and it stood over the place where the Christ child was. God led them to the King of Kings.
How do you see God’s hand in this story? God led the wise men to the place where Jesus and Mary were. Herod, apparently did not see the star….for he asks the wisemen to report back to him, after they found Jesus. The wisemen were warned by God, in a dream, not to return to Herod. They went back to their own country on a different path. God protected Jesus, Joseph and Mary. The wisemen listened to God’s voice.
Patti, I agree about the Magi worshipping. Many commentaries say this was a common greeting in the day, but certainly not to a baby of meager means…and the gifts. I think the Magi must have wondered at what they found to be the end of their long journey.
I thought Keller’s thinking that when they saw the Christ is when they became believers.

This made me think of a conversation with my stylist concerning surgeries performed on adolescents who self-identify as the opposite sex. If you haven’t seen this video, it was made by Focus on the Family and is of Chloe Cole, who transitioned as a young teen through surgery and now speaks against this. Very good.
4. Listen through Keller’s first point
What stood out to you and why? Keller says a Christian writing the Bible would never put astrologers in the story of Jesus because astrology was forbidden.
Give an example of something the world held to be true but was later disproved by explorers or science. The world used to think that fetus’s were only a bit of flesh and could be aborted without care, but science later proved a baby’s heartbeat could be detected at 6 weeks from conception.
Nearly all of America’s Founding Fathers owned slaves, some even justified it by twisting Scripture, mentioning the verses about slaves. (That slavery was different and voluntary and for a limited time. )How did God awaken them to their sin both through other believers and through Scripture? I missed this and do not know.
Share, if possible, a wrong belief you held that Scripture corrected. When I was first in college at Michigan State University, I was a new Christian and my very liberal woman professor asked us to write a paper on abortion. At that time, I defended the unborn but I was conflicted about instances of rape. The world would say a woman should not suffer the pregnancy produced out of rape. Today, I would say trust God.
Why was Augustine, though he lived 1500 years ago, so often right? He based his writings on the Bible (a biblical world view.) Christianity never goes out of date.
Why is the Bible true today, yesterday, and tomorrow? Scripture is God’s holy inspired word and is eternal, as God is.
Thanks for that video, Chris!
You’re welcome. There’s a more lengthy interview with her on the full length Truth Rising documentary, but that is the gist of her story.
Love this video, Chris! this video is so meaningful!
all my answers just disappeared, so I’d respond what you did!
I also just watched a video this morning that showed up on my YouTube called The Star of Bethlehem. it is stood by a man who is a Christian and he’s a lawyer and it’s an excellent video. Some research I’ve never seen before on the star of Bethlehem!
Patti, I watched the video and I love the explanation about how God’s infinite wisdom and plan for the world’s salvation aligns even with the stars! What a detailed God we serve. If He is in charge of the movements of the stars, how much more is He in loving charge of our lives!
Monday: The Text
2. What did Balaam prophesy in Numbers 24:17?
—He saw in a vision and predicted the coming of the Messiah which means “anointed one” or “chosen one”. That Messiah would be of the line of Jacob (Israel) and He would be the King over all and conquer all enemies. We now know that to be Jesus.
3. Read Matthew 2:1-12
What thoughts do you have after first reading this passage and why?
—It is a fascinating account of a group of wisemen (learned and educated men) who were magicians and soothsayers from a country east of Israel and most commentators think that was Persia which is modern day Iran. I read where that is at least 800 to 900 miles away from Bethlehem. Another interesting fact is Daniel had been the chief of court seers in Persia so they were probably familiar with Daniel’s writings.
They obviously had deep knowledge about astronomy and probably astrology as well. So in studying the stars they identified a “new” star and traced its path which took them to Jesus.
I have come to realize over time and learning more about the Wisemen that we as Americans have a very tainted and limited view about who the Wisemen of the Bible actually were and when they came to visit Jesus as a small child in a house and not at the manger.
Why do you think they went to Herod for wisdom.
—I would presume because he was the current “king of the Jews” and they would have expected the new king to be someone born into his household.
How did the chief priests know where the Messiah was to be born?
—They knew the prophecy from Micah 5:2 that names Bethlehem as the place where the Messiah would come from.
Why is Herod in such a panic?
—These Wisemen would have caused quite a stir showing up with whatever entourage they might have had just by who they were let alone being knowledgeable men and with such news of the birth of notable figure as the Messiah in the history of prophecies pertaining to Israel.
How did the Magi respond when they saw the child? Keller says this is when they received true wisdom on who this King was. Do you agree or not? Explain.
—It would seem to me the star was an important factor in their joy and excitement in finding Jesus. It stopped right over the house where Jesus was and in Verse 10 it says “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” Then going into the house they fell down and worshipped Him. I haven’t listened to Keller’s thoughts yet but agree with his thinking that they would have seen Who Jesus truly was. How they responded speaks to their being overwhelmed and doing what happens when someone is in the Presence of a holy God. You fall down and worship Him.
How do you see God’s hand in this story?
—Oh God’s hand is all over this story from the ancient prophecies being unfolded to His clearly leading the Wisemen in supernatural ways.
I never had the thought that they might have expected him to be born in Herod’s household!
Interesting about Daniel! I never knew that.
Bev. You’ve brought in here some excellent insights like Daniel and that they came to Herod perhaps because they expected the King to be in that household as Chris and Dee pointed out respectively. Thank you for sharing!
Monday: The Text
1. What did Balaam prophesy in Numbers 24:17?
A prophecy foretelling the coming of Jesus-“ A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel.”
3. Read Matthew 2:1-12
What thoughts do you have after first reading this passage and why?
I thought it was strange that Herod asked the chief priests and teachers about the Messiah, and yet the knowledge of it did not elicit worship from him. Rather, he was troubled and plotted to know where the Messiah would be to kill him.
Why do you think they went to Herod for wisdom?
Because he was the king at that time, and they might have been thinking that his position made him a source of wisdom and integrity?
How did the chief priests know where the Messiah was to be born?
They know the prophecy. And how sad that they knew but never looked for Jesus.
Why is Herod in such a panic?
The fact that the Magi came from far away searching for a king must have disturbed him. He is just riding it out as king and does not want a threat to his position. Especially when they said, “We have come to worship him.”
How did the Magi respond when they saw the child? Keller says this is when they received true wisdom on who this King was. Do you agree or not? Explain.
They bowed down and worshiped him. They presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. From head to heart knowledge? All signs pointed to Jesus, and their hearts were softened toward the Godchild.
I likened these to the times when, for the upteenth times, I read a particular passage, and its message would finally clicked. Like scales coming off my eyes.
How do you see God’s hand in this story?
God used the natural world and the human knowledge He gifted them with, like astronomy, in this situation. He can use any means to bring about His purposes.
Merry Christmas everyone — may You sense His presence in all there is to do!
Merry Christmas dear friends. God bless you and your families, as we celebrate the Greatest Gift ever Given.
Merry Christmas, Patti!
5. Listen through Keller’s second point
What stands out to you and why? God gives people who don’t believe wisdom, the world’s wisdom is not completely wrong.
Define common grace and give a few examples of it. I liked this definition which I found on the Gospel Coalition’s website: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/essay/goodness-god-common-grace/ Common grace, as an expression of the goodness of God, is every favor, falling short of salvation, which this undeserving and sin-cursed world enjoys at the hand of God; this includes the delay of wrath, the mitigation of our sin-natures, natural events that lead to prosperity, and all gifts that human use and enjoy naturally. God’s gifts are given in some degree to everyone. Examples would be rain, sunshine, medical interventions-anything but salvation which is reserved for believers.
How do you see it in the lives of the Magi before they saw Jesus? They were given this special knowledge of the stars that led them to Jesus.
Share a secular book or movie that touched your soul as a child or an adult. The movie that comes to mind is Bonhoeffer. The end of that movie where he has exhausted all resources to save Jews and then finds he has a gold pen in his pocket which could have been sold to save more people. Of course, there is much more to his story and he was a Christian, but the movie made me think about sacrifice. I later read his biography and might reread that this year as it’s a good one which really makes you think about your faith and relationship with the Lord.
Christmas Day: Wisdom Will Only Find Fulfillment in Jesus
6.Listen through Keller’s final point.
A. What stands out to you and why? The wisdom of this world is only ever complete in Jesus Christ. I don’t think I had ever thought about this before and I’m still thinking through how it applies to the wisdom of the world.
B. How does Keller illustrate this with the Magi? At the end of the journey, the Magi fall down and worship Jesus.
C. How has this been true for you? I think I see this in my life with trying to orchestrate my life in the way I think it should go, rather than seeking the Lord’s wisdom. I have learned that his ways are higher and often what I think makes sense, is not what the Lord has in mind. His way is better, even if it’s not what makes sense to me.
Merry Christmas, sisters!
Beautiful thoughtful post from Chris.
Merry Christmas to all!
Chris, this resonated with me this morning as I am reading the comments here: I have learned that his ways are higher and often what I think makes sense, is not what the Lord has in mind. His way is better, even if it’s not what makes sense to me.
Right now, some things are not making sense to me. I had to be reminded of this truth that His ways are better than mine. Thank you.
Merry Christmas everyone!! Thank you God for giving us Jesus!

Coffee is good, wait, no it’s bad! Eggs are good, wait, no they’re bad…
Nearly all of America’s Founding Fathers owned slaves, some even justified it by twisting Scripture, mentioning the verses about slaves. (That slavery was different and voluntary and for a limited time. )How did God awaken them to their sin both through other believers and through Scripture?
I don’t know the answer to this one. I once learned that George Washington had a manservant/friend whom he “released” but he didn’t want to leave. I don’t know if that’s a true story though. Jesus came for all people, sinners, Jews, tax collectors, and prostitutes alike.
Share, if possible, a wrong belief you held that Scripture corrected.
I always thought if I did good things I would be saved. Little did I know it was GRACE! Thank You Jesus!
Why was Augustine, though he lived 1500 years ago, so often right?
Common sense?
Why is the Bible true today, yesterday, and tomorrow?
The Bible is timeless. It matters. It is hope…who would not want hope?
Your first line made me laugh out loud.
❤️
Laur, I laughed, too, at your answer about coffee, etc. I actually had to do a little research because I wanted to know the plausible or RIGHT answer.
Yes, Merry Christmas to all! Happy birthday to Jesus, our Lord and Savior!
Hahaha! So true about food! Merry Christmas!
I wish I knew more about my family history! I had a book on the genealogy of her family and I’m so sad it got lost! There were records of family wills including slaves passed down from a family plantation in Virginia. I’m guessing that after the civil war, some of the family later turned against slavery because my grandmother was born in Ohio and her family was Methodist. As she relayed to me she had two aunts who never married and were “staunch” Methodists.
My sister has done our “ancestry” and assures me that our family has not ever been involved in slavery of the American past. My father’s side of the family is from W. Virginia and Ohio and weee Methodists also!
Oh! Interesting. Such a small world!
I just found out last week in reading my father’s memoirs that my great grandfather was a Presbyterian minister who emigrated from Scotland!
Oh, fun! I love family history and need to make time for more research. I remember in high school a class assignment was family history and we had to interview a family member and discover if we had any skeletons in the closet! Haha.
Tuesday: Wisdom of the World Always Dated
This made me think of a conversation with my stylist concerning surgeries performed on adolescents who self-identify as the opposite sex. I told her doctors were beginning to have second thoughts on this as suicide had increased instead decreased. I told her I thought it was a passing phase and that doctors should refuse. She said, “But if you were the doctor, wouldn’t that put you in a hard place if both the child and parents want it?”
I said, “No, because I would have made a promise to do no harm. ”
I didn’t bring in the Bible, but I do agree that everything that is not eternal is eternally out of date.
4. Listen through Keller’s first point.
What stood out to you and why?
Magi were considered magicians, astrologers, and were looked down upon. Under the OT laws, those who practiced witchcraft were put to death. Christians and Jews will be put off by this. All the more reason not to write it down. This event was told because it did happen.
A conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn happened at that time to make the star big enough for the Magi to have seen and to have followed. God showed His control over His creation.
Give an example of something the world held to be true but was later disproved by explorers or science.
I had to look this up:
The geocentric model, which placed Earth at the center of the cosmos, with all celestial bodies revolving around it. (Ptolemy’s model) The Copernicus model of heliocentrism, places the Sun at the center of the solar system.
Nearly all of America’s Founding Fathers owned slaves, some even justified it by twisting Scripture, mentioning the verses about slaves. (That slavery was different and voluntary and for a limited time. )How did God awaken them to their sin both through other believers and through Scripture?
Wow, I am interested in reading the answers to this question. There is a long explanation of slavery and the Founding Fathers on a website I found, but I got lost reading it.
Share, if possible, a wrong belief you held that Scripture corrected.
I have gotten faith and good works in the wrong order. I used to believe that I needed to earn my salvation.
Why was Augustine, though he lived 1500 years ago, so often right?
What he wrote about Christianity then is still true today.
Why is the Bible true today, yesterday, and tomorrow?
Psalm 119:89 Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.
Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”
Oh, yes. I remember learning about the Ptolemy model and the Copernicus models!
I’m also now remembering learning about William Wilberforce! He was a British Member of Parlament and a Christian who worked to abolish the slave trade in England and the colonies. I would guess he had a big impact on our leaders of the time. I do believe there was a lot of difficulty in giving up slaves as the livelihood of the owners was tied up in the money it would cost to have to hire the help to replace the slaves. I do believe that some who kept slaves at least were not abusive, though wrong to use them as they did. I believe the inherent worth of each individual as being made in God’s image was used as a guide to shadow the slavery of humans being inconsistent with God’s word, as well as the example of God’s people being released from slavery of Pharaoh. Sadly, many did use the Old Testament laws in Leviticus to defend the use of slaves.
Yes — sad historical truth about our country that was not true of other countries!
I meant to also say that if things are put into the Bible then it’s because it is truth.
5. Listen through Keller’s second point
What stands out to you and why?
People who are not Christian can have wisdom. I have a colleague who makes a great effort to give to charities and to participate in charitable events. She takes her teenage daughter to soup kitchens and makes blankets and such. She does things I should be doing! She isn’t a Christian. It confuses me. She may be the example that Keller gives as a person who doesn’t really fit into the non-Christian world view. She definitely may be that “happily inconsistent” person of whom Kathy’s professor speaks.
Define common grace and give a few examples of it.
Common grace is given by God to those in our society who we need to help us but may not believe in God. Surgeons and writers are two examples that Kathy gives.
How do you see it in the lives of the Magi before they saw Jesus?
They were astrologers, into the stars and such. They were wealthy and advised their government(s). They did not have any sort of religious component to them.

Christmas Eve: Wisdom of the World Only Partially Wrong
5. Listen through Keller’s second point
What stands out to you and why?
Define common grace and give a few examples of it.
Common grace is that wisdom given to Christians and non-Christians, even the bad ones, artistic skills, or scientific knowledge
Not all worldly wisdom is wrong.
How do you see it in the lives of the Magi before they saw Jesus?
They found the Christ child; they followed the star.
Share a secular book or movie that touched your soul as a child or an adult.
As a teen, The Little Women and Little Men by Louisa May Alcott have touched my soul because of their strong characters. These books embodied resilience, familial love, and the shaping of character through hard circumstances in life. I love Jo March especially, and I am a sucker, lol, for her romance with Friedrich. (loved the movie with Wynona Rider and Gabriel Byrne, 1994)
Christmas Day: Wisdom Will Only Find Fulfillment in Jesus
6.Listen through Keller’s final point.
A. What stands out to you and why?
The wisdom we long for can only be fulfilled in Christ Jesus.
B. How does Keller illustrate this with the Magi?
They must have recognized that all of their search based on astrology, they found in Jesus Christ.
I appreciate his use of I Corinthians 1:22-24, where Greeks seek wisdom and Jews seek power, but when the cross came, and for the ones who became Christians, the cross gave them God’s true wisdom and power.
You’re looking for what you’re looking for in the wrong place.
C. How has this been true for you?
I can look at my life and can tell various times when I look for wisdom, power, significance, security, etc., from what this world has to offer. I still have not found anything close. I have found Jesus is the right place, and He is the right person in whom is all wisdom.
Friday: Kathy’s Thoughts
Dee, thanks for sharing about your Dad. He sounded like a very wise man.
7. Listen to the end.
A. What stands out and why?
B. How do you choose a good doctor or dentist? Is it important to you that they be a believer? Why or why not?
Having a Christian health care provider is great. I believe being a nurse has given me opportunities to know quite a few providers. This may have helped me with my choices. Living in smaller communities has helped. I have stayed with my present primary caregiver for many years. I am not sure she is a Christian, but I love her smartness, bedside manner, and her sincere interest in my welfare. I could tell she knows me very well, medically that is. And she is someone with whom I have shared my life struggles.
Similarly with our dentist/s. Richard and I have gone to the same dental practitioners, father and son, for many years. They are both Christians; again, for their bedside manners, sincere interest in our welfare, and personal touches like remembering what we do and asking follow-up questions when we see them again.

From this blog?
So many to count and to write! I would say that between our “guest speakers”, like Paige Brown, Tim Keller, etc., and Dee and the ladies here, I have learned that I can never exhaust the wisdom of God. No man possesses it fully. Everything is just a hint of what the Lord has prepared for me, for us.
From an unbeliever?
A former student who walked out on me: a lesson on not giving up on anybody. This student later apologized, and although she reached me through Facebook (ugh feeling at that time, but realized their efforts were sincere and the way they manage conflicts, a lesson in itself for me)
I saw her mother a few months later, and she thanked me for not giving up on her daughter.

From a true believer but from a very different camp — perhaps Catholic or Pentecostal
Priscilla C.- a colleague/ nurse instructor, who is Pentecostal, the importance of a good work ethic and a life of praise.
But common grace and the image of God mean the non-Christian is never as bad as his wrong theology should make him. Point?
We are all equal at the foot of the cross. We all need Jesus.
Such a wide variety of people/places you have gained knowledge, Bing. What a rich life. I love your lesson of not giving up on your student and the idea of never fully possessing the knowledge of God. I hope that I am always willing to learn more. I also love from Keller how we are all equal in Christ. This really helps unite Christian’s and keep away division. We just have such a hard time implementing this, don’t we? I’m feeling my heart soften at this and want to work on implementing it in my life. My theology and however right it seems to me, must not cause division. It is tricky sometimes to live with others who don’t agree in our way of thinking and to truly love them. We must agree on the gospel and live it out, but be willing to let the rest of theology have wiggle room for agreeing to disagree, so that we do not impede the gospel. As you say, Bing, I want to remember I can still learn from others who disagree with my theology. My neighbor who was so angry with my husband this fall, still came to our hayride. We discovered that her family is catholic (not sure if practicing), democratic and her husband works in the union. We are Protestant, republican (mostly, haha), and my husband is a non-union electrician. In some ways our views are so different! But I’m praying for this neighbor in the BLESS app and looking for opportunities for discussion and relationship, though I really need to go out of my way to do so. I’m looking for the Lord’s leading and after living here for 15 years, I received a piece of her mail in my mailbox accidentally. It is from a catholic charity. I’ve been hanging onto it, thinking the Lord has a reason behind this and I will return it to her. I’m reluctant. I’ve had it at least a month. I made out Christmas cards for some of the neighbors who came to our hayride. Today is the day I want to deliver them. We shall see what happens! My mind is open to the Lord’s leading and new friendships with those who think differently than me.
CHRIS –I love your bless approach to your neighbor!
Oh, Chris! Thanks so much for your thoughts. I am currently in a place where I love a person who has hurt us, especially my husband. I am restless and have been asking God how to reach out, especially since I do not have their whole side of the story. I am kind of our Laura here. Being involved in the past in their situation has hurt me, and I felt like that person had put up a wall, so I backed off. Praying for myself to keep trusting God. I know He has all the wisdom that I need.
Bing– you come from such a rich background!
6.Listen through Keller’s final point.
A. What stands out to you and why?
We need to be wise and point people to Jesus like the wise men did. It’s hard to point people to Jesus, when they don’t want to listen. It’s intimidating, yet it’s the reason we are here and they need Him just like we do.
B. How does Keller illustrate this with the Magi?
The wise men bowed and worshiped Him. All their searching, in all their astrology was found in Jesus.
C. How has this been true for you?
I have found more joy when I am in tune with Christ. I understand why life worth living. There is hope.
Laura, you are so right about it being hard to point people to Jesus when they don’t want to listen. I have a friend whose wayward father went to a nursing home 2 years ago. Her testimony was that she asked at every visit how his relationship with Jesus was and prayed for God to reveal himself to him and love her dad, showing forgiveness. She reminded him on December 11 that we never know when God will call us home and asked if he was ready. The next morning he called and in a weak voice at their visit said he was ready, whenever God chose to call him home. They sang and prayed and cried. Her dad went home to heaven on December 21. What a beautiful ending to his hard, hard story. We must never give up, because God never gives up. Keep planting those seeds, friends.
Wow Chris! What a story. I’m so glad your friend persisted. I am not so good. My brother is an alcoholic, in an out of times sober (a long one if 20 or so years), but struggles always. I haven’t talked to him in a very long time. His life is broken and he only comes to me when he needs something. He has lost his marriage and a daughter (death) in the past 5 years. Very sad story. I woke up thinking about him today. He is a lost soul who once was a strong Christian. I don’t even know how to reach him and didn’t try to send a Merry Christmas message. When I send messages (is it even the right phone number?) he doesn’t respond. When I get involved I get hurt.
So hard, Laura. Lots of pain in your life. Perhaps prayer is best route!
I agree with Dee, Laura. Don’t be too hard on yourself and commit to prayer. Perhaps the Lord will use someone else to reach your brother. My friend said her dad was absent for many years and missed much of family life, but during this time God provided an opportunity when her dad was ready. Sweet ending, but the road was long and hard.
Laura, I agree with Dee that it is important to just keep praying for your brother. You say he was once a strong Christian but is now a lost soul. He may have wandered far from God but God has not forgotten him. And God will honor your prayers for him. Even yet God can rescue him.
Laura, I agree with the ladies here. Your prayer for your brother matters. I know what you mean by this: “When I get involved, I get hurt.”
I pray that we may be able to set boundaries and, at times, love from afar through our prayers. and yet be ready when the Lord calls us to get involved, despite the pain. Jesus understands. He will be our courage and joy.
7. Listen to the end.
A. What stands out and why?
I love how Kathy and Tim talk to each other. She says not many can read books like him. She really admires him. He is self- deprecating. He doesn’t make himself out to be so special. We could all use a little bit of both of them in us.
B. How do you choose a good doctor or dentist? Is it important to you that they be a believer?
Why or why not?
I won’t go to a counselor/psychologist anymore unless they are a Christian. Our family has been very hurt by those who are in that field who are secular. Christian doctors have another viewpoint that adds to the mix. They “get” you better.
I will say that I haven’t chosen general doctors who are Christian but I might from now on. I really should get genocologist since the last one I was with closed their practice a few years ago. But when I went to look they had a whole LGBT advertising component and that turned me off. Why not just be in business for all people? So weird.
Too many to count! I’m going to get myself in trouble…To be persistent (thank you Bing and Chris), to be courageous (Renee), to love always (Jackie), to forgive (Susan), to be kind (Lizzy), to be joyful (Nila), to be practical (Dawn), to be faithful (Bev and Joyce), to be thoughtful (Nancy and Patti), to be humble (Sharon and Cheryl), to step out for others (Missy and Cyndi), to be uplifting (Rebecca), to be warm (Diane), and so many more that I am not remembering right now. I’m sorry if I missed anyone and I glean so much from everyone here! Thank you all.

From my friend who is Catholic. She is persistent and faithful. From another friend who grew up Pentecostal…she is a genuine, authentic Christian who lives her life with others always in mind.
Awe. I love your summary of what you have learned from the blog sisters. So true and so sweet. And dear Eunice! I love that she has been participating and sharing her heart here while endeavoring to study and overcome health challenges. Her love for the Lord is so evident. I’m loving this exercise of putting to words the things we have learned from others.
Saturday:
9. What is your take-a-way and why?
What I am searching for is found, and can only be found in Jesus.
I like to add the following in answer to this question from Dee: “Keller said we learn from community — and we certainly have here. Can you give a specific example of something someone taught you:”
I started writing to a pen pal about 8 years ago ( I have saved some of his letters and found one dated 2017!) who is serving a prison sentence. He became a Christian while in prison. I have seen his growth in the Lord and his perseverance in waiting on Him. I have never met him in person. Through the years, he has encouraged me to persevere as well, whether at my job or in my relationship with our daughter. He is due to be out less than 4 years from now, and I am so glad for him, his daughter, and his parents. At various times when I have found myself discontent, disheartened, and feeling hopeless, I think of this friend, his letter from yesterday arrived on time! I take so much for granted. He also taught me that freedom is a state of the heart. One can roam the earth free, but be in a prison cell of sin; one can be in prison, but be a freed man.
Thank you, Dee, once again, for leading us this year. Thank you, friends, for being a part of my life for several years now. I look forward to 2026 being here and seeing God work in and through lives.
what a beautiful story about your pen pal! So glad you are here with us, Bing. I always learn something from your posts and love to see the Lord at work in your life. Challenges are indeed met with perseverance. Freedom being a state of the heart-this is a new idea for me and makes perfect sense. Perspective is always impacted by our state of mind. Do we allow our circumstances to drive our feelings about today or keep our eyes on eternity and the Lord’s beautiful plan of redemption for all people? I will keep looking up friends and you all are a big help in keeping my gaze upon the Lord.
Bing, I’m so glad the pen pal has worked out all these years. You are a kind soul.
Listen to the end.
A. What stands out and why? The idea of finding a common truth in relationships even when someone is very different from you.
B. How do you choose a good doctor or dentist? Is it important to you that
they be a believer? Why or why not? I haven’t made it a priority but that is a big benefit for sure
You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. A stitch in time saves nine. The early bird gets the worm. Easy come, easy go.
D. Keller said we learn from community — and we certainly have here. Can you give a specific example of something someone taught you:
From this blog? In everything, carry your burdens to the Lord in prayer. I am always pointed back to Christ and the gospel here.
From an unbeliever? Perseverance
From another country? While my husband was serving in the army I met a woman named Inga, from Belgium. She was married to a serviceman and babysat for me. She was very kind and seemed so content despite being very far from family and friends. I’ve always remembered her and her sweet demeanor-not a wise saying but a big impression on me.
From the opposite sex? My husband has always been very firm about being a ‘man of his word.’ I’ve always respected this.
From a true believer but from a very different camp — perhaps Catholic or Pentecostal. I can’t think of a wise saying but a catholic friend and her family have been a constant inspiration to me in the faithful Christian walk they have led despite very difficult circumstances.
I was just remembering a saying my grandmother often said. “Isn’t life the berries?”
I looked it up and it was from the 1920’s and means isn’t life wonderful. This was from a woman who lived through the Great Depression in a family with 6 children; she being the oldest. Her parents always struggled financially and could never quite get the mortgage paid off, so that when their second child became a young widow, she used the insurance money to pay off her parent’s house. My grandmother often made due with what she had and didn’t think anything of it. She still had the pot and pan set she was given when she got married until she left to enter the nursing home. She gave up a full ride scholarship to the U of M, (which she earned from good grades being valedictorian of her class) to go to work and help support her family. She suffered moving back in with her parents and sending her two young toddlers to stay with her sister, while she nursed my grandfather from the brink of death with polio. After his recovery, they saved for 8 years to be able to buy their dream home on the river. In her 70’s, she sat at the kitchen table for dinner with her husband in a wheel chair from strokes, her oldest son also in a wheel chair from a massive stroke in his 40’s and abandoned by his wife, and my father now living with her after a closed head injury and divorced by my mom who didn’t know how to handle it. She became my role model and I hope to be able to say, isn’t life the berries even in adversity.
