Perhaps you have heard the saying that those who are too heavenly minded are of no earthly good, but indeed, it is the heavenly-minded who have actually done the most good. Consider the past pandemics. Non-Christians fled the city, fled the plague, fled those who needed them the most. Many Christians stayed to serve. Why? Because they knew this life is not all there is, so they did not cling to their lives. Here is just one good article on the testimony of Christians in pandemics historically: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/4-lessons-church-history/
Being heavenly-minded is not only good for the world, it is good for us. I don’t turn heads anymore, my walk is slower, my eyes dimmer — I am living out Ecclesiastes 12:1-5! Likewise, the world. as Paul told Timothy it would, is spiraling down in its lusts and lies. Yet despite this, I have an inextinguishable joy, a real purpose in each day, and a fellowship that the world cannot know. In part, this is because I know this world is not the end of the story. He’s also given me a down payment of sorts, a taste here and now of what awaits me in the new heaven and new earth. I know I was made for another world.
No one puts it better than C. S. Lewis:
In the closing two chapters of the Bible, we gaze on the new heaven and the new earth, and it matters that we take this to heart.
It also matters that we approach these chapters with good homiletics. Revelation paints pictures with symbols. Last week we looked at the picture painted of Satan being like a dragon looking out over the sea.
We understand Satan isn’t actually a serpent, a sea monster, or a dragon (same word translated three ways), but that this is a picture to help us glimpse Satan’s stealth and power, so we will be on guard.
This is so helpful to me in looking at these closing chapters on the new heaven and new earth. For example, one of the first things we are told is that “there was no longer any sea.” (Rev. 21:1) Once I thought WHAAAT? I love the sea! We are also told there will be no more night. Again, I thought WHAAAT? I love sunsets, stars, and the sweetness of sleep. But I was being far too literal.
In his book, “From Chaos to Cosmos: Creation to New Creation” Sidney Greidanus explains that just as darkness became a metaphor for sin, so the “tossing sea” because a symbol of evil, a dark dangerous place that swallows up ships and is filled with sea monsters.
St. Augustine says the same. In The City of God, he writes that in the new heaven and the new earth there will be “no more of the surfings and restlessness of the human life, and it is this which is symbolized by the sea.”

Later this week you will listen to this free sermon by Keller:
It also matters that we use the gifts God has given us, as long as we have breath, to tell others of the beauty, to be the light that shines in the darkness, the peace that overcome the chaos, the love that overcomes the hatred, and the truth that gives hope to the hopeless. I think of each of you, using your gifts of mercy, teaching, writing, dancing, encouraging — all proclaiming His beauty. Oh, how it matters. Prepare your heart with this by Sara Groves:
Next Sunday we begin our Lenten study with Michael Reeves and the Puritans. I think you will be glad if you purchase Dane Ortland’s Gentle and Lowly — but it is not required.
Day 1. Getting Started
- What stands out to you from the above and why?
- As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be?
Day 2: No More Chaos
Prepare with this prayer from Scotty Smith:
Father, I’m so glad John’s vision isn’t about a beach-less future, but a “sea-less” one—an eternity and a world devoid of all chaos and evil. There won’t be any more brokenness, only beauty… no more angry leviathan, only dancing dolphin… no more tempest, only the triumph of the Lamb!
3. Read Revelation 21:1 and describe what John saw.
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:
A. Psalm 69:1-2
B. Isaiah 27:1
C. Isaiah 57:20-21
There are so many passages that show God’s power over the sea. He turned its chaos into cosmos in Genesis 1, used it to rescue the righteous in the story of Noah, again in the story of the Exodus through the Red Sea, and again in the gospels when Jesus stopped the storm. The hymn that helped me speak the truth to my anxious soul after Steve died was “Be Still My Soul.”
Be still, my soul, the waves and wind still know
the one who stilled them when He dwelt below.
Indeed, God did brought me through the raging river of grief to the other side, to experience a peace that the world does not know. Does my turbulence ever return? Yes, but one day it will not — in the new heaven and the new earth!
5. On this earth, we have glimpses of what will be complete and continuous in the new heaven and the new earth. Share a time recently when God calmed you, giving you a peace that passes understanding.
6. If you are facing anxiety right now, instead of listening to your soul, speak the truth to your soul.
Day 3. The New Jerusalem
7. Read Revelation 21:2 and describe what John sees, noting both symbols or metaphors:
The Bible could be described as a “Tale of Two Cities,” Babylon, the city of man, and Jerusalem, the city of God. The “old Jerusalem” gives us just a taste of what will be completed and continuous in the “new Jerusalem.” John Frame and Vernon Polythress explain this in their excellent free online book about Revelation called “The Returning King.”
The temple and the surrounding city were consecrated for the presence of God, to be the way of access to God…The new Jerusalem represents the perfecting of the community and the consummation of its joy in the presence of God. This consummation is fundamentally the work of God, not human beings. It is not Babel reaching up to assault heaven in autonomous pride, but the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven as the gift and artistic product of God’s craft.
https://frame-poythress.org/ebooks/the-returning-king/
8. How have you experienced the presence of God in the last year? Be specific.
9. Meditate on Revelation 21:3-7 and find things that you have “tasted” here on earth but that will be complete and continuous in the New Jerusalem. Take time with this
10. Why does God tell John to write these things down, according to verse 5?
11. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect the way you live? And why is He telling you this today?
Day 4. Dressed As A Bride
Many of us have tasted the joys of being a bride on earth, of being rejoiced over, and of, at least at times, cherished and desired. But as my friend Lucy told the other inmates in a Texas prison, “Even if you’ve had a bad wedding or a bad marriage, you can imagine what it is to have a good one, and to know that that is coming. And He won’t just rejoice over you on your wedding day, but every day!” (If you haven’t seen Lucy’s testimony, you can see it by clicking here and scrolling to the 3rd video.) https://deebrestin.com/hecallsyoubeautiful/
11. How have you tasted the joy of being a bride on earth, of true communion with your husband — or, if you haven’t, how do you imagine it to be?
12. What insight do the following verses give us on the beautiful kaleidoscope of meanings connected to this metaphor?
A. Isaiah 62:5
B. Song of Songs 2:8-13
C. Challenge question: The same Hebrew word”yada” (translated “Knew” in KJV) is used in Genesis 4:1 and Deut. 34:10. Look them both up and contemplate what this may mean when we consider what this could mean both now, in our relationship with God, and how it might be completed in the New Heaven and the New Earth.
13. Charles Spurgeon noted that “the Song of love [the Song of Songs] and the Book of love [the Bible] end in almost the selfsame way, with a strong desire for Christ’s speedy return.” See if you can find it in each, and then share what God is communicating with this.
14. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect your life?
15. Give praise to God.
Day 4. Heaven
16. Listen to the Tim Keller sermon above and share your notes and comments.
Day 5. All Things New
In John Eldredge’s book “All Things New” he tells of the reaction of his daughter-in-law when circumstances prevented them from going on a long-awaited vacation. She said, “That’s okay. I’ll experience it at the renewal of all things.” We don’t need a bucket list — we will have it all, only better.
17. What do you learn about this from the following?
A. Isaiah 65:17-25
B. Romans 8:21-23
C. I Corin. 15:35-37
18. What do you think you will remember from the Overview of Revelation — what will stick and transform you?

Day 1. Getting Started
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
In his book, “From Chaos to Cosmos: Creation to New Creation” Sidney Greidanus explains that just as darkness became a metaphor for sin, so the “tossing sea” because a symbol of evil, a dark dangerous place that swallows up ships and is filled with sea monsters. St. Augustine says the same. In The City of God, he writes that in the new heaven and the new earth there will be “no more of the surfings and restlessness of the human life, and it is this which is symbolized by the sea.”
What a comfort, what a joy! No more evil, no more restlessness. No more strivings-Hallelujah, indeed!
2. As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be?
Whatever happens today and tomorrow, Romans 8:18 comes to mind: “I consider (a mindset) that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” A short testimony here: Today, we made the decision to travel the 50 mile trip to a our little church. The highways at the beginning were passable but we were concerned of the 15 mile stretch from one town to another ( we are 3 towns away). When we got there, we saw the blinking lights of a snow plow! He led and cleared the way for us! So thankful and mindful that when we do what God wants us to do (gifting), He will equip and provide for what we need and clear obstacles for us. Anxious thoughts flee away and give way to peace. My husband often says that the safest place we can be is in the will of God.
I love Sara Groves’ song, “Why It Mattters”. And the quotes from Andrew Peterson and Schaeffer.
Thanks for sharing, Dee. I have not heard of this before.” … ramparts to the soul”. Beautiful words. My life is art. I matter. You matter.
Hah! I am so excited about this study, I am posting a 3rd time! Here is a wonderful rendition of “No more night”. One line says, “evil is banished to eternal hell”. I hope the link posts.

Bing — you make me smile. And it was so fun to see you on Zoom today! You are wonderful!
Aaww…Thanks, Dee! Yes! I did not expect how much more joy it brought me to see all your lovely faces on zoom! I think we should do that again after a study.
That song is beautiful, Bing. Thank you for sharing. It reminds me of my Grandad’s choir singing at my Grandma and Grandad’s double funeral. That deep sound of strong, male voices in unison: beautiful. And I love that last line: to live in the light of the risen Lamb.
It was lovely seeing your face and hearing your voice last night. So wonderful to hear your testimony too. When we are in His will He protects and keeps us: Amen! Did you have a lovely time of fellowship?
Anna, that song gives me goosebumps every.single.time. It made me think of my Mom and Dad and my sister again. They are now all gone from earth but enjoying the presence of their Savior.
Yes, we had a lovely fellowship with the few who braved the weather, too. And Psalm 84:6-7 came alive again for me. “As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools. They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.” We are just passing through this earthly life but while we are here, we can a place of springs.
It was good to see as well. We have remote classes today because of the weather so I have a chunk of time to come here and comment. Yea!
I love that verse. I am so glad you had lovely fellowship together. Amen: just passing through.
sweet Bing–love this story of your faithfulness and God’s provision of a snow plow!
This is my first time here. Looking forward to the studies.
Welcome Patricia!
Welcome Patricia!
So glad to have you, Patricia!
Hello, Pat!
Thank you for the warm welcome. I learned about this online bible study while listening to Dr. Dobson interview Dee. I plan to actively participate in the Lent bible study – I didn’t think I could catch up with the Revelation study 🙂
Hi, I was disappointed when I found out the bible study was Sundays at 3pm. I am a Griefshare leader and our meeting is Sunday 3-5pm. Is the Zoom recorded or can I access it any place?
sue
What stands out to you from the above and why? The clarification about the sea and the darkness. The things that make the earth beautiful I would hope wouldn’t be removed.
As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be? I’m not sure I know what God gifted me to be.
Dawn, did you listen to the Sara Groves song? Certainly a new perspective for me 😉. Check it out!
Dawn:
May God uncover His gifts that are already at work in and through you. May you (re)discover what fills your heart with joy and passion for Jesus and His Body and may others affirm these gifts they see at work in you, even here. And may God fill your heart with fresh confidence in who He has made you to be.
What fills your heart with joy?
What makes your heart sing?
What gives you energy?
Looking back on your life, what have you been most drawn to? What activities/kind of people have you spent most of your time on/with?
Really, Dawn? What do you love doing and think you do well? I see so much giftedness in you.
I see the gift of compassion in you for a starter.
Thanks for the encouragement, ladies. You’ve given me some things to think about (and act on) 😉
Dawn, I was talking to God about you last night and He reminded me of something I had deleted from my comment to you, feeling silly. I had first put in there that I feel God’s gentleness through you in this place. The fruit of gentleness is so evident in your comments in this group. It’s then I thought of the significance of your name “Dawn”. When the sun comes up in the morning, it doesn’t just bring light, it brings warmth that thaws the ice. I see you as being God’s warmth in the places He sends you. That warmth moves, even without speaking, to lead hearts that are hardened in sin and pain, to repentance and the outstretched arms of Christ. Oh may God show that to you again and again: that your very presence brings life and healing to others, through the Spirit and Word of God you carry with you. Much love from afar.
Thank you for that, Anna. It isn’t silly, it’s what I needed to hear. I am a quiet person, but I do have deep feelings for others.
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
I read the article on Christians who have given themselves in service to those dying during the plagues. What a different way to view this topic! Did you realize, Dee, that it was written by the Australian, Glen Schivener? I loved his poem (!) at Christmas (TGC advent special). It reminds me of the firemen and police who run into buildings instead of away during fires and emergencies.
2. As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be?
I don’t really have too much anxiety about the new heaven and earth. I want to be here when it happens because, oh how glorious it will be! I want to see the faces of those who believe and are in awe when it happens. I don’t necessarily want to see the faces of unbelievers, or those I love who are not in the faith now. That is the sadness for me.
As a dancer, I am getting older and can’t move exactly as I have in the past. I don’t have the same flexibility, or the strength to do some of the moves as I used to either. Sometimes I think it is sad. But this is a new perspective for me! I can still choreograph (especially to scripture – my favorite) which should be a blessing to others. I can pass the baton to the younger dancers as well.
Laura: that article was so good, wasn’t it? I loved his poem too. Can still hear him reciting it.
I am curious: what do you most love about your teaching job? What drew you to teaching?
Was lovely seeing you in person last night.
Laura and Anna — was so good to see both of you last night! Thanks for your help Laura. Anna — I found myself wondering what time it was where you are! Great to see you!
Dee: It was 10-11pm here.
Laura, just what I thought you would be-full of energy and so down-to earth! Good to see you and thanks again for the dance videos.
😘
3. Read Revelation 21:1 and describe what John saw.
John saw a new heaven and earth. The old heaven and earth had disappeared, as had the sea.
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:
A. Psalm 69:1-2
These verses are scary to me! There are floodwaters about to engulf someone; to take him under. Help!
B. Isaiah 27:1
Here, God is protecting me by taking “out” the sea serpent from the sea. This makes me feel safer, like swimming in a pond or lake instead of a shark infested ocean.
C. Isaiah 57:20-21
These verses give a picture of a churning sea, never still, in constant motion. That reminds me of having something “niggling” in the back of my mind continuously, where I can’t shake it off. I have a situation right now where that is the case. It’s exhausting!
5. On this earth, we have glimpses of what will be complete and continuous in the new heaven and the new earth. Share a time recently when God calmed you, giving you a peace that passes understanding.
Well, being in school 100% since Sept. 2, has had it’s ups and downs (logistically) to say the least. What a rollercoaster ride in itself. I have not been concerned much (rather, felt peace) the entire time. It is where I need to be, and where the kids need to be as well. It is well with my soul.
6. If you are facing anxiety right now, instead of listening to your soul, speak the truth to your soul.
Speaking of school….I have a couple parents on me about their students, for different reasons. I want to defend myself and my actions to them and others. It is the knee-jerk reaction when you are put “on trial.”
Oh my soul, I must remember that I am to show the face of Jesus to others. I know God is with me and will be with me in the midst of the fire. I can lay the burden down with You, God. When I do this, I am calm and able to think clearly to speak the right words. Let me know You are right there with me Lord. Be the guide for me as I try to convey, in love, the solutions to the issues present. Whatever comes of these situations, I want to make sure no one can say I wasn’t a pleasant, caring person toward them.
1. What stands out to you from the above and why? When Dee said she is living out Ephesians 12:1-5, but she has a joy inextinguishable and knows she was meant for another world.
Also Sara Groves song and the quotes within the video. That our life as believers is art that brings beauty in how we live it-Like when a father forgives his prodigal son and a few more examples were given-never thought of that as art but it is! It is the beautify of our lives-empowered by Him in us. I so love this.
2. As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be? Whatever evil or pain or setback that happens to me today, becomes so small compared to the truth of what lies ahead. Though I have times I SO stumble and forget, and the hard things can become mountains, but He is growing me and when I live more and more in the future (heavenly minded) it helps me to trust Him with whatever comes and continue to press into Him and persevere -and oh His Joy.
You do live out the beauty, Rebecca!
Day 1 -What stands out to you from the above and why? Before the zoom, I listened to the song and was encouraged by the message that Jesus has called me to a purpose worthy of His calling- and that it is a work of art…that it matters. Then I was able to see all of your faces, and hear your voices and was hit with the truth of the beauty of His work in your lives as you encourage and lift each other up.
As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be?The impact of this perspective for me is the realization that the spiritual battle wages so that I can overcome,,,He makes a way, He commands, He arms me to step into purpose. so….I just post on this blog every day?
Was so fun to “see” you Devina!
Loved seeing you also, Devina!
Hi, Devina! Great to fellowship virtually!
DeVina, you can post daily if you want, or on days that you have time! Dee organizes the lesson into days; sometimes I try to get here every day to work on the questions, read others’ comments, but sometimes with work or my schedule, I miss a day or two. You can work ahead….just feel free to do what works with your schedule. There’s always someone “here”!
Day 1. Getting Started
1.What stands out to you from the above and why?
The CS Lewis quote. I have read it before, and yet it still touches my heart so much. The brokenness of this world and my own heart makes me yearn for heaven so much. And at the same time resting in the knowledge that we are seen and known in Him who makes all things complete and whole is so precious. Reminds me of this song I was listening to last night:
https://youtu.be/jcGDYx_gkUk
2. As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be?
I think just knowing that everything is part of a completed whole is so reassuring. That even my blunders and missteps are woven into beauty by God, who uses that to bring glory to Himself and His love and grace.
Anna, the song you posted brought tears to my eyes…I’ve seen first hand those circumstances, but those smiles! I am so glad that He Sees.
I know, right?! It made me cry also. Oh how He loves us.
Love this! “That even my blunders and missteps are woven into beauty by God, who uses that to bring glory to Himself and His love and grace.”
Day 1
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
If the sea symbolizes surging and restlessness of the human life (which will be no more in the new heaven) but are taking place here on earth now, that picture of the rock formation that looks like a dragon/sea monster looking out over the sea, reminds me that Satan is just ready to pounce any time he gets a chance. I struggled last week with depression which was causing unrest and a turning within myself rather than turning to God and ashamedly Satan had a hay day with my thoughts and attitude. Thankfully, with forcing myself to be in the Word and on this blog I came out of the mire. Seeing all of your beautiful faces was such an inspiration to me…an out flowing of His love.
2. As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be?
Oh Dee, where was this question last week?😜 The importance of keeping my eyes and heart upward! I’m a little slow at times so the song by Sara Groves took me a few times to really grasp, but the quote by Francis Schafer really helped…”No work of art is more important than the Christian’s own life, and every Christian is called upon to be an artist in this sense. He may have no gift of writing, no gift of composing or singing, but each man has the gift of creativity in terms of the way he lives his life.”
Dear Lord,
I pray to be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that I will walk in a manner worthy of You, to please You in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work , and increasing in the knowledge of You…” Colossians 1:9-10
Oh that bad dragon pushing dear Sharon down in the mire. But you knew how to get out! Hurrah!
Yes, hurrah!!
I second that hurrah!!
I am so sorry you struggled so much last week, Sharon. Praise God for His mercy toward us in our need. I am reading the book we will be studying next: it has such good reminders of God’s heart of compassion to us in the very situation you just described.
It was lovely seeing and hearing you last night.
Thanks dear Anna. I too have purchased the book but haven’t started it yet.
So enjoyed seeing and hearing you as well!
Sharon, I hear what you are saying about Satan having a heyday with your mind and attitude. I experienced that last week and the troublesome thoughts came again this weekend. I keep reminding my self to think of thoughts according to Philippians 4:8. I have to remember that I am in the battle in a position of victory.
I’m sorry to hear that Bing…good verse to meditate on and will keep you in my prayers.
Beautiful prayer scripture, Sharon!
😊
Sharon–sorry for your struggle with depression last week, but you minister to me with your example and how He pulled you out– “forcing myself to be in the Word””I came out of the mire”. so good. thank you for sharing
Oh Lizzy, thank you. You have been in my prayers with all that you’re going through…may you feel His loving arms wrapped around you.
Sharon, I too am going in and out of depression for a few reasons. I get what you are saying here. This is where I find this group so important. It helps reign me back in and reminds me of who I am. Seeing and hearing everyone on Sunday helped me to know the truth. I am a child of God. I’m glad you are better this week. 😘
Thank you Laura and I truly am sorry your experiencing depression as well and I totally agree about this blog…prayers.
Sharon, I think we can all relate to Satan having a hay day with our thoughts and attitudes….sometimes we turn inward and so give him the room to do that. It’s good that you made yourself get on the blog and in the Word. I also really liked all of the Schaeffer quotes in the song.
what stands out? Well, first Dee’s words, “I have an inextinguishable joy, a real purpose in each day…” Yes, and the quote from CS Lewis, too.
2. Yes this newer perspective of the new heaven and the new earth will help me to overcome anxiety over illness and pain, and I will intentionally use my gift of mercy to be an encouragement and teacher to younger Christians. yes, my neck, shoulder pain is persistent though I try to work through it.
The Zoom group was delightful to see some of you dear sisters and listen to your voices and you are all special to me. thanks, Dee, and each one who shared. Love communicating though a bit overwhelming…
Shirley, it was so good to see you. You definitely are a picture of mercy. So glad you are a teacher to younger Christians. Praying your neck and shoulder pain will go away. Have you tried yoga? I had chronic neck and shoulder pain for many years. After I started doing yoga, I have experienced significant relief though it comes back periodically with stress or extended time at my desk.
You see such a gentle soul, Shirley. Thanks for being brave and coming on — I truly feel like I know the women who came on better than I did. You are lovely.
Day 2
3. Read Revelation 21:1 and describe what John saw.
He saw a new heaven and a new earth – the first heaven and earth passed away and there’s no longer any sea.
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:
A. Psalm 69:1-2
This is exactly how I felt last week, like I was drowning, not literally, but the waters came into my soul. And David says he’s sinking in deep mire (mud, clay-like substance), he’s in the deep water that overflows him like a flood. I remember swimming in Lake Kivu and a storm came up out of nowhere (which happened quite often) and it was getting rough and I kept going under and getting weaker until I felt my strong father lifting me up and taking me back to the dock. God has, did and will continue to lift me up as well.
Dee, I love how God gave you these verses to share this week…mire was the only word I could come up with to describe what I’d been lifted out of and here it is here…no coincidence!
B. Isaiah 27:1
The Lord will punish Leviathan, the fleeing serpent. He’ll kill the dragon who lives in the sea.
C. Isaiah 57:20-21
The wicked are like the tossing sea, it can’t be quiet, it’s waters toss up mire and mud and there’s no peace.
5. On this earth, we have glimpses of what will be complete and continuous in the new heaven and the new earth. Share a time recently when God calmed you, giving you a peace that passes understanding.
As I shared above with the bout of depression I had last week…coming through that with a God given peace is definitely beyond my understanding, but He has always been faithful.
6. If you are facing anxiety right now, instead of listening to your soul, speak the truth to your soul.
I’m not facing anxiety right now but when I do, the truth I go to is Isaiah 26:3,4 “You (God) will keep me in perfect peace, when my mind is stayed (propped up, established, sustained) on You, (why?) because I trust in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for in Him is everlasting strength.”
No, no coincidence!
Sharon, thankful the Lord brought you through that bout of depression!
Me too Susan! I also appreciate your kind words above. It’s nice to come here and receive such encouragement.
Day 1. Getting Started
1. What stands out to you from the above and why? – I just want to say I enjoyed the zoom meeting yesterday afternoon. How fun it was to see those who could make it on. It brings a new dimension to the study. It makes me feel close to everyone on this blog. I hope some day we can meet in person, but if not, you are all in my prayers daily.
The article from Gospel Coalition showed me what I still see today. That there is hope that God’s people will always be around to help those in need. I don’t think everyone will, but then are they truly one with God? Are they administering love like Jesus? I think what it takes is one person to step up, start the rally so to speak and others jump in. I remember back when 911 happened, and how everyone came together, but what saddens me is after a while it dies away. I need to make an effort to really be the Christian God wants me to be and love like Jesus. I look forward to the new earth and the new heaven, where we can finally be free of the enemy. Is time is limited and I can’t wait for that time to be over.
2. As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be? – I have hope, there will be peace finally to everyone who has accepted Christ. I need to continue to use the gift(s) God has given me as he’s instructed me to do. I want to be close to Him in everyway I can and that comes from me trusting Him with my WHOLE life.
It was a joy to see you on zoom, Julie!
Julie, I think we can all say we appreciate your prayers…praying for you too!
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
“no more of the surfings and restlessness of the human life”—I love this promise of peace, rest.
2. As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be?
Last week had a lot of anxiety for me—a tough phone call with my daughter, a mole biopsy, lots of work, and tough transfusion day for Philip, and still a lot of tears for Mary. Now I am on the other side of those thing and really can look back and see His carrying me. I am still not sure what all He has ‘gifted me to be’ or that I am doing it—but I am thankful for the roles He has given me, I do feel used by Him—but most of all I look forward to that Day of “no more of the surfings and restlessness”. I am so thankful for the assurance that this is not my home, and I have a promised one ahead. It does make it feel even closer as I imagine Mary and other loved ones there, free, healed, full of joy.
3. Read Revelation 21:1 and describe what John saw.
John saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” –the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:
A. Psalm 69:1-2—the waters can suffocate, come over us, have power over us, take us in like the way evil ensnares.
B. Isaiah 27:1-the dragon (satan) is in the sea—implying it is his dwelling place, used by him? The sea is dark, it’s hard to see what lies beneath-like the enemy, lurking—we must be on guard.
C. Isaiah 57:20-21-the sea is tossing, like wicked people without peace, it’s waters stir up dirt—the way wicked people stir up trouble, bring out the worst.
Still not sure how He has gifted you? Oh my, Lizzy. With great insight (discernment, prophetic); encouragement, administration, mercy — trying to think what gifts He has not given you!
Lizzy, I agree with Dee….and also, both you and Miriam have a special gifting, to welcome into your hearts and lives and homes children through adoption. I know, through your sharing of stories, that there are many challenges in this, and it takes the gifts of patience, love, compassion and caring, and much faith….hands-on caring, too, for a child with medical needs. I also see a gift of creativity and teaching in you, as you’ve shared how creatively you do Advent each year with your children. Maybe we all get tripped up by the question of being “gifted” because we think of people, Christians or not, who are so “gifted” that they are well-known personalities….singers, songwriters, writers, pastors and preachers, theologians, poets. We fail to see the seemingly small things we do in an ordinary day as an example of something we’re gifted in. You are also a very thoughtful gift-giver.
oh Susan–I’ve been so covered up at work, and home that I just “stumbled” upon this response from you and now I have tears! You are so special to me. I have always thought you would make an incredible counselor–and I know you use those skills as you nurse and OH how blessed those people are. I honestly cannot think of any nurse I’d rather have than you!!
I agree with Dee and Susan. Lizzy: you show so many gifts here in what you share. I have been personally blessed by your compassion, discernment/wisdom, truth speaking and encouragement here. I also see intercession at work in those other giftings: the heart of God for others and yourself being revealed to you in prayer/relationship with Him.
Dear Anna–thank you. I don’t know how I could even scratch the surface of how He has gifted you–so many ways–you truly reflect Him so beautifully, your words, your depth of wisdom, your compassion–so thankful you are here.
Day 2: No More Chaos
1. Read Revelation 21:1 and describe what John saw.
A new heaven and a new earth; there was no longer any sea.
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:
A. Psalm 69:1-2 Save me from the waters that are up to my neck; sinking in the miry depths where there is no foothold; I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulfed me.
B. Isaiah 27:1 the Lord will slay the monster of the sea
C. Isaiah 57:20-21 the wicked are like the tossing sea which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud; there is no peace for the wicked.
I remember when I used to work at an island as a community health nurse back in the Philippines. I would occasionally travel for 30 minutes to the mainland to either shop or make the long trip to visit my folks. One particular night, after caroling at another small island and on our return, we were buffeted by some big waves. The boat was listless, my friends and I were being tossed against each other as seawater was coming into our boat! I remembered calling out to God to save us. The deep waters were so near us. I don’t think I have ever been scared in and for my life. Having finally both of my feet on the shore never felt so good.
Indeed, God did bring me through the raging river of grief to the other side, to experience a peace that the world does not know. Does my turbulence ever return? Yes, but one day it will not — in the new heaven and the new earth!
2. On this earth, we have glimpses of what will be complete and continuous in the new heaven and the new earth. Share a time recently when God calmed you, giving you a peace that passes understanding.
Right now, I cannot think of anything specific except that there is a pervasive “cloud” of unpredictability surrounding significant aspects of my life-family, job, ministry, future move after retirement, that could easily derail my sense of peace. But God has been so especially gracious to bring that peace that passes all understanding. Each time I get anxious, the Lord brings something to mind ( where the real battle often rages for me) that shakes me off my anxieties.
His ways are mysterious but always wonderful. Case in point: I was reminded of the words of my online yoga teacher, Adriene Mishler, that has stuck with me since last week. Although her words are not theologically termed, this has really resonated with me: “Everything is as it should be.” And I thought you are right, Adriene. Because God is in control, what is now, is the way it should be. His plans cannot be thwarted and so my soul gets a “truth talk”. (see below)
3. If you are facing anxiety right now, instead of listening to your soul, speak the truth to your soul.
Soul, God is in control (Romans 8:28). His purposes cannot be thwarted (Job 42:2; Proverbs 21:30); I am loved by God tas he apple of His eye (Deuteronomy 32:10). Keep your eyes focused on Him. You shall not be moved. ( I Corinthians 15:58)
Love how you closed speaking scriptural truth to your soul.
That’s quite a harrowing experience you had in that boat, Bing! I would’ve been really scared, too. I also like the words of Adriene that really spoke to you, “Everything is as it should be.” Yes, because God is in control, what is now, is the way it should be.
Susan, it sure was. In hindsight, I believe God was speaking to me then in a special way admonishing me to do the right thing. I look back now and thank God for His mercy and forgiveness. He is so patient and longsuffering with us.
7. Read Revelation 21:2 and describe what John sees, noting both symbols or metaphors.
John sees a new Jerusalem, coming down from heaven like a bride dressed for her groom.
I am not sure about the metaphors….I will try!
The new Jerusalem represents Jesus coming for us?
8. How have you experienced the presence of God in the last year? Be specific.
I guess overall, “the covid” couldn’t be in charge of us. I saw families together playing, riding bikes outside, people sending cards and calling others to check on them, and so on. We had a very financially productive year (oddly enough) so we bought a boat and spent quality time with the kids. Church leaders tried several new things to help all of us get through; daily evening mini-services, services outside, services transmitted over radio in your car, services now on YouTube, and so on. The devil will not win! I felt His hand on us all year, guiding and encouraging. Thanks for reminding me Dee!
What a great answer to 8!
You always make me smile with your struggle with metaphors! Yes, Jesus along with all the saints who have gone before joining the saints on earth.
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
Dee saying that “despite this, I have an inextinguishable joy, a real purpose in each day…” And I really liked the song by Sara Groves. I appreciate the reminder, too, that we can’t literally impose a few verses from Revelation, such as there no longer being any sea, and say that is what heaven or the new earth will be like. I used to get upset about “a city with golden streets”, because I don’t really like big cities; I’d prefer a winding, dirt road and a cottage at the edge of the woods! I would think, “I don’t want to live in a high rise for all of eternity, and I don’t care about streets paved with gold!”
2. As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be?
There’s surely a lot to be anxious about these days, if we let ourselves be anxious. Covid 19 is one example. Though even as believers, I think we should be concerned about things happening in our world and the sufferings of those around us. We should do our part, when and where we can, to walk with others in times of pain, sorrow, or suffering. Though I look forward to a new heaven and earth where there is no disease, or pollution, I still believe God has given us so much to enjoy here and now, even in our imperfect world. There is enough beauty in nature, for example, to make your heart leap for joy! A couple of weeks ago, though very cold and snow on the ground outside, I bundled up and went out. I ended up staying outside for two hours. I sat out in the yard, under a piercing blue sky and a pale yellow sun, listening to the hardy, winter birds chirping and enjoying the glittering-like-diamonds snow! Then I went for a walk.
I read the above discussion with Dawn about what has God gifted her to be? That ties in to what Dee said about feeling a sense of purpose each day. I’ve really struggled with that in the past few months. My purpose for about 29 years was raising and caring for my children. My daughter remains close by, yet lives in a house with other girls about an hour away as she’s in college. My two sons live in other states. I, too, struggle with finding a new sense of “purpose” because at heart, I like to take care of and help others. So, too, I used to be much involved in the lives of my parents in their old age, and now they are both gone. Some thoughts for Dawn (hope this is helpful). I think about when I was younger, in high school, college, and even as a young adult. For whatever reason I did not know then, I pretty much did everything my older sister did. She was a majorette in HS, so was I. She was in a sorority, I joined one too. She worked on campus at a particular job; so did I. Though I wanted to be a nurse in my own right, she also was a nurse, and she went to the operating room. So after working two years in med-surg, I went to the OR too. It was a personal disaster for me! I was not meant to be an OR nurse, and after three or four months of it, crying at home and dreading to go back to work the next day, I returned to direct patient care. Thinking back, I realize that I did not know who I was. I know now that I am more of a one-on-one person, preferring to get together with one, maybe up to three friends at a time. That’s why a sorority was not a good fit for me, either, and I ended up dropping out. It took me a long time to figure out who Susan is, and how God made me. Another clue to your gifts is what you often hear others say about you. Recently at work, another nurse remarked about how “gentle” I am. That’s something others have said about me, too, so I think that God has gifted me with gentleness. The questions that Anna posted are also really, really good to reflect upon.
such a good post from Susan on how to discover your gifts.
And I laughed out loud at this
I don’t want to live in a high rise for all of eternity, and I don’t care about streets paved with gold!”
Susan, I so love this post from you. Such honesty and your words on your journey from high school to direct patient care were coming to life for me. Like I am in the room with you, listening to your story. I had similar wondering or wandering with my career and found my love and calling in teaching.
Bing, I love how creative you are with your health science students, like the sugar cookies you did recently! I’m glad you found where your calling was – in teaching. There are so many areas within the realm of nursing, aren’t there? Mine was definitely NOT in passing instruments during surgery to irate, often verbally abusive surgeons.
Susan, LOL. I know what you mean by ” passing instruments during surgery to irate, verbally abusive surgeons”. I worked in the OR/DR after graduation and I remember those surgeons berating me for giving them the wrong instruments. Ugh!
Oh Susan, isn’t it crazy how we try to follow in other’s footsteps?! But you know what? In God nothing is ever wasted. I believe even that experience has shaped and moulded you into who God has made you to be.
I did the same thing in following my friends into studying law. One of those friends ended up serving in Serbia and no doubt hearing horrific stories. I don’t know if I could have stomached all that horror.
I stepped away from my study of law to become an au pair, then a nanny, a European Studies graduate with a thesis on health-related social policy borrowing, a health institute worker in the Netherlands, an analyst for the NZ Ministry of Health with contract relationships with the Health and Disability Comnissioner and manning the NGO Desk, then finally a high school English teacher, graduating 9 months pregnant with my second child.
Crazy thing is my dream as a little girl was to be a missionary like Gladys Aylward. Only now, do I see how each thing I have done in the past has been moulding and shaping my heart to live out that dream God gave me. I know there is so much more before me and my family and now I know to trust God’s call to me and not what I can see with my own fleshly sight.
No one supported Gladys in her God-given call – they told her she couldn’t go because she was too small, not trained theologically, too weak and too poor. But Gladys went where God asked her to go and saw God move through her to rescue hundreds of abandoned children. I am seeing Him grow that boldness in me to go where He asks me also, regardless of what others say.
I pray God also shows you how He has redeemed those early experiences to bless you and others through you.
3. Read Revelation 21:1 and describe what John saw.
John saw a new heaven and a new earth, because the first heaven and the first earth were gone. He said that there was no longer any sea.
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:
A. Psalm 69:1-2
This picture is of a body of water being dangerous, deep, and “miry”….murky, cloudy, almost a feeling of thickness, and you can’t touch bottom. His troubles make the psalmist feel like he’s up to his neck in water, and he’s starting to sink. This is a terrible feeling of being overwhelmed to the point of sinking into despair. I am glad that we do have something – Someone, solid under our feet who will not let us sink.
B. Isaiah 27:1
The sea here is a home to “Leviathan”, the gliding, coiling serpent; the monster of the sea. This could represent our enemy who glides about, wanting to coil around us and drag us away or under. One day, God will slay this great monster.
C. Isaiah 57:20-21
This is a picture of a rough sea, with waves tossing and churning up debris and mud, and it is a picture of the wicked, who can never be at rest or at peace. They can never be at peace with themselves or with others. It’s a picture of a futile, exhausting way to live, where you never have inner peace. And, how could you? The wicked are not at peace with God, which creates constant turmoil in their inner and outer lives.
5. On this earth,we have glimpses of what will be complete and continuous in the new heaven and the new earth. Share a time recently when God calmed you, giving you a peace that passes understanding.
Right now, I can’t think of anything….but what I often get anxious about is thinking about my old age, should I live to get old. I am so afraid of “ending up all alone.” A few years ago in an email, Dee shared Isaiah 46:4 with me, and last year, I got this card from a “ministry ambassador” at In Touch Ministries (Charles Stanley). She wrote in the card, “Dear Susan”….then the pre-printed message on the card, and then she wrote, “Is. 46:4 Even to your old age I will be the same”. So that was twice now I’ve gotten that message! In my NIV Bible it reads, “Even to your old age and gray hairs, I am He, I am He who will sustain you…”
A couple of older adults (around age 80) who I know are always expressing how “bored” they are, and their days seem to be filled with attempts to fill their time and still feel like they have a purpose….it makes me feel so uneasy and unsettled therefore to imagine myself being old and wondering what will it be like for me? And then my husband will talk about wanting to move somewhere warm so we can be outside, and I’m like yeah, but it’s still daily life….I want to have a purposeful existence and not live like I’m on a vacation every day.
6. If you are facing anxiety right now, instead of listening to your soul, speak the truth to your soul.
When I feel anxious about the future, about aging, what will life be like then, and at times when I have anxious thoughts or worries about the safety of my children (like my son who will be leaving soon for Guyana again), oh….I need to read verses like the one in Isaiah or read about Jesus in the gospels, how he went about caring for those around him and just doing what he was there to do….he didn’t worry, it seems, about having so little time and so much to accomplish. He spent time with his Father – that was a very important part of his life – prayer. I worry about my boys because they are not walking with God; I think they believe in God but He’s just not important enough to them for their time or attention. I keep praying for God to send believers into their paths.
I was encouraged by your transparency concerning aging. As a single woman…I am often advised by well-meaning aunties to find someone who will take care of me in my old age. It sometimes impacts me with fear. I smiled as I read about your cards…they reminded my soul…that He who will sustain me until old age- He found me. I am excited to see that He has already placed a desire in your heart to step into His plan and prepare work for later years! I am grateful His plans will not be thwarted. Praying for confidence in these promises for both of us.
3. Read Revelation 21:1 and describe what John saw. All things new without a sea
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:A. Psalm 69:1-2 drowning B. Isaiah 27:1 powerful dangerC. Isaiah 57:20-21 entangling without peace, waves of doubts and temptation/double-minded, unstable in all deeds5. On this earth, we have glimpses of what will be complete and continuous in the new heaven and the new earth. Share a time recently when God calmed you, giving you a peace that passes understanding. When someone hurts my family, I get slammed by a tsunami of thoughts and emotions. Recently my sister had to move out of her home with her daughter in the middle of the night. Immediately I was plunged into deep waters of desperate needs to blame, fix, worry, fight…but the Lord immediately calmed my soul…I took a deep breath of His mercy and was gifted the grace to offer the mercy to my brother-in-law and comfort to my sister. The waters remain choppy for them but the Lord is control- He reminded my soul of that Truth every time the phone rang- through that situation.
What a good illustration of God calming your stormy sea, Devina.
Day 1. Getting Started
What stands out to you from the above and why?
The song by Sara Groves. And why? Well first she is one of my favorite musical artist and has been since her beginning days of performing. The clarity of her voice is pleasing to me musically and this particular piece that is accompanied by the piano and cello resonates with me. I particularly love both of those instruments and their sound. This song is especially pleasing musically. My next comments are a bit of a whine from an old lady but much Christian music today is noisy and without clarity of thought. It seems many songs are repetitive in their lyrics and feelings oriented toward self. My older brother has often commented “Why do so many worship leaders today in churches stand and sing with so much angst on their faces.” But never with Sara Groves. Her songs are songs with depth and spiritual meaning. They are songs about life and the Lord and His place with us. This video was also good because of the richness of thought that was enhanced by the clips of quotes from Tolkien, Peterson and Schaeffer. I was greatly blessed and encouraged by it this morning
As you face today with a perspective of the new heaven and the new earth, how might it help you to overcome anxiety and to be what God gifted you to be?
Having the knowledge that we have a future and a hope with our Lord and Savior is paramount in my life personally to be forward looking to the glorious hope of the return of Jesus. I find real peace from Him about the little time left for me either in the context of his return or my going to be with Him in physical death. My greatest desire is to finish well. Our small group was talking about Heaven recently and out of the comments and questions discussed one thing stood out to me from a dear old pastor in the group was that he reminded us that it will be perfect. There was that tendency to try and define it against the only thing we know and that is earth. Earth is our only experience so far and really Heaven is indescribable to us because it will be perfect in all ways. Oh that I may be a witness for Him to others to join us in that Heavenly Home.
I too love Sara. She also walks the talk! She says she writes “processing” songs — reflecting on the mysteries of God. They surely do glorify Him. She, Andrew Peterson, Michael Card — all so good.
Your comment , “It seems many songs are repetitive in their lyrics and feelings oriented toward self” made me smile. My father-in-law called them 7/11 songs…7 words sung 11 times. He also felt that many of the songs could be love songs heard on a secular radio station.
Like this, “heaven will be perfect in all ways.”
Another remote learning day so I get to have time to comment here!
Day 3. The New Jerusalem
1. Read Revelation 21:2 and describe what John sees, noting both symbols or metaphors:
He saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God prepared as a Bride beautifully dressed for her husband
1. How have you experienced the presence of God in the last year? Be specific.
Whereas man would say, “that was a coincidence”, I have sensed God through His promptings of people that I either have to see, talk to or pray for. Like when I felt prompted to talk to an elderly gentleman at church and he shared his testimony with me confirming he is a Christian. A month later, he passed away from Covid. Or the prompting to send something in the mail or a text and finding that person felt lonely or is in a spiritual need or prayer.
I also have felt His presence at times when I felt like I blew it with my students. Although the struggle for self-pity or regret came, He took me out of it, and I saw His redeeming hand acting on my behalf and working things out for good far beyond what I expected.
2. Meditate on Revelation 21:3-7 and find things that you have “tasted” here on earth but that will be complete and continuous in the New Jerusalem. Take time with this.
Tears, death, mourning, crying, or pain; The old order; Thirsty-these will all pass away.
Joy will be complete and never-ending. The restlessness of my soul will not be there; instead, a calm that prevails. There will be no more decay of our bodies nor of any created things; relationships will be true; No more strivings through works.
On the funny side: I don’t have to clean or repair!!! LOL
C.S. Lewis: all the beauty and joy on planet earth represent “only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.”
9. Why does God tell John to write these things down, according to verse 5?
Because these things are trustworthy and true.
10. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect the way you live? And why is He telling you this today?
I should stand on the truth and not allow my soul to talk otherwise to me. God is reminding me today to stay in the Word and to continue to look at my priorities when falsehood threatens to derail my peace of mind.
Great story with the man who passed away from Covid!
I just took time to look over the comments on the blog so far and was incredibly blessed by what I read. Such good interaction full of encouragement. It was hard not to just jump in but I realize it would be after the fact. I want to add my encouragement to you Dawn on your giftedness. Dee and Anna gave such good Questions for you to consider. Susan made a good point of us maybe thinking we aren’t gifted like the really gifted people we know and observe. For a long time when I was younger I just felt “less than” but God in his grace showed me and spoke his love into my heart that my life matters and I have found it to be so in many small and unnoticed ways but most importantly I really matter to Him.
And I think of Sharon with her battle with depression and Bing, Lizzy and Laura with their acknowledgement of the struggle with Satan having a heyday with thoughts and attitudes also having tough weeks last week. What rich encouragement flowed from this group. God bless you all!
And of Bev for her encouragement!
Thank you Bev!!
Thank you Bev, for your sweet post. Every morning I come here and get myself “grounded.” Yesterday was brutal 😠, yet here “…joy comes in the morning.” Love and hugs!
“but most importantly I really matter to Him”. Thank you for that sweet reminder today, Bev.
Bev, thanks for the encouragement. This is such a wonderful place to sit and relax and enjoy sweet fellowship from a distance. I often have gotten frustrated with myself for not being able to comment or respond to the rich exchange here. But God has given me sweet release from self-imposed expectations. Now, I can come here and read as much as I can and be blessed knowing that in His time, with His promptings, my words would also be timely no matter how much or how little I comment. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
Day 2: No More Chaos
3. Read Revelation 21:1 and describe what John saw.
A new heaven and a new earth.
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:
A. Psalm 69:1-2: Here the Word translated “sea” is “mayim”= water/s. I think the sea symbolizes the Word of God at work in David.
David’s sin of hating his enemies is being exposed, by the waters churning, to be washed off from him.
Later in the Psalm David asks God to deliver Him with the truth of His Word. Here we see that the Word has its intended effect: it frees David from the sin that wanted to make David lose his firm foundation of the Word.
B. Isaiah 27:1: what’s strange to me is that the sea mentioned here is also the same word used for the basin of water the priests cleansed their hands with at the Temple.
God’s Word also talks of casting our sins into the sea and remembering them no more. Micah 7:19 (ESV) “He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” Hmmm.
I also thought of this Scripture:
John 13:8 ESV
Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”
Which connects to:
Hebrews 10:24 ESV
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
Titus 3:5 ESV
he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
1 Corinthians 6:11 ESV
And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Hmmm: so maybe if we belong to Jesus the dirt (sin) is washed off us as Jesus cleanses us through the power of His Word to reveal Himself (purity) in us.
But if Jesus is not in us, we can never find peace with our conscience churning because although we hear the Truth, we cannot free ourselves from our sin in our own strength – only Jesus can free us from the guilt and shame we otherwise cling to. This would be like the next verse to look at: being caught up in an endless tossing sea.
But with Jesus’ help we do the hard work of facing up to our sin, turning away from it and into the open arms of Jesus, who reminds us that we aren’t the sin, but His beloved child He died to deliver from the sin that’s killing us. Without HIM holding our hand and delivering us into His Presence and truth, we just cannot stop clinging to the sin that’s stealing from us, killing us and destroying us.
What also struck me in this verse was the “twisting” and “fleeing” nature of the dragon/serpent. That’s what Satan does when He tempts us to separate ourselves from God through sin: flee the truth (not repent) and twist the truth (defend/justify sinful behavior). In both those situations we are running from what is our antidote: Jesus/ the Truth.
C. Isaiah 57:20-21
Here the wicked (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance: condemned, guilty, ungodly, wicked man, that did wrong) are said to be like a tossing/driving out sea that casts out/delivers up mud/clay. No peace can be found by the wicked, who keep clinging to their sin as it steals, kills and destroys.
5. On this earth, we have glimpses of what will be complete and continuous in the new heaven and the new earth. Share a time recently when God calmed you, giving you a peace that passes understanding.
When God convicted me of needing to speak the truth to someone I loved and I knew it could cause anger. I didn’t want to go there. It frightened me and my emotions were all up the whack. But I just knew I had to, so I asked for God to help me: to give me an opportunity to be alone with this person AND to open my mouth and fill it with His Word.
In an unexpected way, I had about two hours alone and at the very end of that time, I was able to speak up about the matter. But the way God spoke through me was unexpected.
It began with me apologizing for my own wrongdoing – an apology I had already given before, but somehow felt I needed to give again, acknowledging my deep remorse – and then, after considerable time unfolded in which I listened and my heart ached at the hurt I could see I had done that this person was still so grieved by, God pressed me to speak the truth. And I saw an acknowledgement come in the facial response and not a trace of anger.
Amazingly, a few days later, that same person, who I was so ashamed of hurting and had been so afraid of speaking the truth to, looked at me and literally said: “There truly is not one ounce of evil in you.”
That person said this in response to a good deed God had called me to do, that had required a big surrender of me and yet had brought me such joy in obeying. I just cried and thanked God so much for redeeming all the harm and hurt I had done.
6. If you are facing anxiety right now, instead of listening to your soul, speak the truth to your soul.
He who is in you, Anna, is so much greater than he who is in the world. It’s no longer you who live, Anna, but Christ who lives in you and the life you live in the flesh that calls you to sin, you live by faith in the Son of God who died to save your soul, to deliver it from sin and death. No weapon formed against you can ever prosper. Everything sent to harm you, God will turn into good for the Son of God who lives inside of you and loves His Father, your Father, for you, perfectly in your imperfection. Watch Him rise in you and be strong in you and for you to mould and perfect you in His image. Watch Him deliver you from your terror of telling the whole truth and not just a part. Watch Him free you from your sin of lying, by withholding the full truth.
Thank you Anna, for the lovely story of you and your friend. Thank you for reminding me to go to Him first when dealing with a tough situation.
Oh how we need that reminder again and again, huh? Hugs. I feel for you with all the school drama. May God continue to wrap you in His love and set your feet firmly upon His Word of truth, and me too.
Good observation on twisting and fleeing nature of serpent.
Praise God that evil serpent is no match for the freeing power of Jesus at work in us!
Day 2: No More Chaos
3. Read Revelation 21:1 and describe what John saw. – He saw a new heaven and a new earth
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:
A. Psalm 69:1-2 – Reading on after these two verses, makes me think that the deep waters here represent those who do not believe in God like David did. They were his enemies that may have opposed the The Word of God.
B. Isaiah 27:1 – The monster of the sea – This to me represents where the serpent, Satan will be found for the slaying from the Lord.
C. Isaiah 57:20-21 – the wicked are like the tossing sea – I think these are unbelievers who are causing trouble among Christians. They are trying to find things that will sway Christians away from God.
5. On this earth, we have glimpses of what will be complete and continuous in the new heaven and the new earth. Share a time recently when God calmed you, giving you a peace that passes understanding. – For me, with the virus that has affected many, I have found peace through it all. I know the seriousness of the virus and saddened by those who suffered and for those who struggle with loneliness and isolation. I pray daily for this virus to be gone and for life to get back to ‘normal’, but as I write this, I just have to wonder now, if the normal we think is best, really is not what God has planned for us. I’m sure, after doing this Revelation study, God has it all planned out and we will be truly blessed with His Normal.
6. If you are facing anxiety right now, instead of listening to your soul, speak the truth to your soul. – Lord, bring me peace. Still my anxious soul, my wandering mind. Lord I need to have you fill my every thought. Bring me comfort and peace, help me to notice what triggers my anxiety and stop it before it comes. I need to focus on you and your Word and the promises within it. Thank you Lord for your comfort and peace.
8, How have you experienced the presence of God in the last year?
I am posting only briefly as it is still a challenge to type…but I have had great joy in reading the Pray for America Bible daily with my husband.
Since we have committed to this we have been blessed; each day is an excellent brief prayer for our leaders. Today’s prayer “Lord, Paul didn’t demand his rights, thank you for that model of leadership, may it be reflected in the hearts and actions of those who lead in the church”
Our understanding of the Word is richer as we do this together. It is only a gift from God.
Thanks to you and your husband for praying for America!
So beautiful you are praying together for leaders in the church.
I remember my vicar’s wife telling me what a heavy burden she felt some try to place on her and her husband and how she responded to them that she is only human and in need of God’s grace just as much as them. My Dad would tell you similar things, having served in church/Christian school leadership roles most of his life. Thank you for reminding me too, to pray for our shepherds and their families, including Dee and her family too.
Satan wants nothing more than to wreak havoc in the lives of those pouring themselves out for God.
Father, today I join Shirley and her husband in prayer for Your church. Lord, Paul didn’t demand his rights, thank you for that model of leadership, may it be reflected in the hearts and actions of those who lead in the church. Father, forgive me for not doing what You call us to do: to pray for Your church. Continue to prompt me to pray for Your shepherds and Your flock daily. Let not a day go by that I forget. Amen.
Shirley,
This is so neat to be praying for our nation with your husband.
A new Heaven and a new earth and no more sea.
A comment by Wiersbe “The Greek Word for “new” means “new in character” rather than “new in time” and this suggests that God will renovate the old Heaven and earth and remove all that is sinful and destructive.
Regarding the old creation he said “passed away” does not mean “destroyed”. It is wonderful to think about the chaos and destructive power of sin will be gone and the renewing work of God will bring perfect peace to his renewed creation.
4. In the following Scriptures, what does the sea symbolize? Meditate, imagine, and share your thoughts:
A. Psalm 69:1-2
This is a fearful picture of being in a drowning kind of experience. Deep waters are unnerving to think about and flood waters are powerful and carry away anything in their path. It is a very troublesome place to be. But for God!
B. Isaiah 27:1
What a wonderful picture and thought of the power of God on display on that day to come when He will slay the dragon who comes out of the tumultuous sea ending Satan’s control and chaos he creates on earth.
C. Isaiah 57:20-21
Wickedness always bring with it chaos, confusion and noise. It stirs up trouble and is never quiet. There is no peace for the wicked. Sin doesn’t allow for it. A picture of it are the storm tossed seas.
Praise God for this testimony and this wonderful truth.
5. On this earth, we have glimpses of what will be complete and continuous in the new heaven and the new earth. Share a time recently when God calmed you, giving you a peace that passes understanding.
I have to go back 6 months to my time of sickness with Covid. I am still amazed by the peace God gave me during that time and the closeness of his presence with me when I was experiencing the unknown of where my symptoms would take me and a fatigue like I have never experienced before. I was never afraid in spite of all the voices at that time were telling me I should be for my age and a few underlying issues. He just held me closely and blessed me with wonderful care.
6. If you are facing anxiety right now, instead of listening to your soul, speak the truth to your soul.
I am grateful that at this time there is no cause for anxiety in my life. Not that there couldn’t be if I let the externals of this troubled world dominate or influence my thoughts but I will say God’s Word has a high place for me right now in it’s power to speak truth and encouragement to my soul. I am committed to memorizing scripture at this time. I do it very slowly but that works for me.
I appreciate what Anna wrote in answer to this question by personalizing with her own name truth from scripture. We just did that exercise in the ladies bible study at my church. An example is a favorite verse from Zephaniah 3:17 where we personalized God speaking and inserting our own name.
I the Lord your God am with you Bev, I am mighty to save. I will take great delight in you Bev and I will quiet you with my love, I will rejoice over you Bev with singing. That blessed my soul.
Oh wow, Bev! This SO blesses me:
A comment by Wiersbe “The Greek Word for “new” means “new in character” rather than “new in time” and this suggests that God will renovate the old Heaven and earth and remove all that is sinful and destructive.
You see, it always troubled me that God promised never again to destroy the earth, after the flood and yet then in Revelations it seems he is doing so. So, this so blesses my heart and it truly makes such sense. Thank you for sharing. I will be praying for God to uncover more in relation to this.
Love this post of Bev’s as well: “God will renovate the old heaven and earth and remove all that is sinful and destructive.”
9. Meditate on Revelation 21:3-7 and find things that you have “tasted” here on earth but that will be complete and continuous in the New Jerusalem. Take time with this.
Well, I do think God has been with me at times. He has “wiped my tears” when I struggled with our teens. I also think my husband and I have been blessed over time.
10. Why does God tell John to write these things down, according to verse 5?
He tells him to write them down because it is “…trustworthy and true.”
11. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect the way you live? And why is He telling you this today?
I need to be grateful for the blessings in my life; thanking Him more than I do. I need to recognize the times He is with me, no matter how small the incident. Yesterday, in a zoom parent meeting, my computer froze and I had to re-log in. It was a difficult meeting and I was feeling attacked. Although I was the one who was explaining things when I froze, I believe God gave me a way out (!).
I do think the enemy attacks the internet — and that may increase. Help us, Lord!
Hugs, Laura!! Oh may God send encouragers your way at that school, who speak to His love at work in you and through you. May you be affirmed in His placing of you there. May you see His power at work in your weakness and His Son rise to defend you from every attack waged against you. May all around you be astounded by the peace, love and grace flowing from you, no matter the trials you walk through. Know, dear sister, you are so loved, so seen and so known in that place. May the enemy shake in his boots, every time you enter the room to be Christ’s hands and feet.
Thank you Anna. As usual, beautifully crafted 😘
Hi. Laura. I’m a teacher as well. I teach Middle School STEM. We have been in person this year. But…this week our city had a water contamination issue and we are now in our second day being at home. It does seem like the enemy is increasing the attack in more bizarre ways. I am grateful that the Lord continues to intervene through our days of instruction- whether we are in-person or virtual. I am about to go into a zoom meeting…I will be praying for you that every time you log in- you will have the peace of Christ prevail with reminders of His presence.
Devina, we have teaching in common! Bing is a teacher as well. We have many nurses here too 😉. I teach high school science.
Boy, the evil one has tried so hard this week. I tried posting a reply to one of Susan’s posts yesterday morning and “lost it” 3 times! That has never happened to me before. We have been 100% in school since Sept. with only 1 2 week stretch of remote due to a staffing issue. I am thankful I am with the kids. I will pray you get back soon. Thank you for your prayers!
BTW, we lived in D/FW for 25-30 years. Our kids were born there too! We LOVE Texas and are thinking we will return in a few years.
Day 3
7. Read Revelation 21:2 and describe what John sees, noting both symbols or metaphors:
A new (in character, fresh, not recent or new in time but better) heaven and earth. The sea is also gone, which means no more evil, no more beast and no death. The new Jerusalem comes down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband (it gives the image of a groom seeing his bride walking down the aisle…that’s how beautiful it will be).
Day 3
8. How have you experienced the presence of God in the last year? Be specific.
I have experienced the presence of God through this blog and the encouragement I have received. Just in this week I was overwhelmed by all of your responses, humbled and I felt Gods love through y’all…thank you❤️
So good to hear — you are so loved here, Sharon.
7. Read Revelation 21:2 and describe what John sees, noting both symbols or metaphors:Holy City/Jerusalem/Bride, prepared with a beautiful dress, and the Groom
8. How have you experienced the presence of God in the last year? Be specific.I started to receive invitations to frame my day into rhythms and patterns based on a Common Rule. After I read the book of the same name (The Common Rule) the implementation and the Lord’s work through these habits began to change my day and mindset. My day began to open up to more and more invitations, to sit with Him, find pleasure in His delight at my simple acceptance of the invitations to pray, fast, have face-to-face discussions with others, turn off my phone. These invitations have now evolved into larger spaces where I step into obedience or tasks He has prepared. Less are my doubts of doing the right thing for questionable motives. More is the joy in finding His will for my day- day by day.
9. Meditate on Revelation 21:3-7 and find things that you have “tasted” here on earth but that will be complete and continuous in the New Jerusalem. I love discovering the facets of the Lord’s character through scripture, through Jesus’ words and actions. I love how the Holy Spirit dwells in my home, with my own spirit, within my body as a temple. I love how He reveals my identity through His Word and Spirit- I am His child, I am His. When I see Him fully, I will fully understand who He has made me to be because I will myself complete in His eyes. The times that I have “tasted” just a whiff of this is during praise with other believers, when memorizing Scripture, and when He interrupts my thoughts to break a lie.
10. Why does God tell John to write these things down, according to verse 5?because they are trustworthy and true
11. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect the way you live? And why is He telling you this today? If I really believe this I can tell my soul to trust when it is shaken, when it is angry, when I am confused. I can remind my soul that He is not a liar.I can remind my soul and others that He is the only ONE who will always accomplish what He promises- faithfully, eternally. That He has proven Himselfover and over. That He has revealed the TRUTH so that HE may be found. I must continue to ask, to seek diligently and carefully as the prophets did-even angels long to look into these things (1 Peter 1:12),
Such good soul talk, Devina.
Day 3. The New Jerusalem
7. Read Revelation 21:2 and describe what John sees, noting both symbols or metaphors: – John saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem. It was coming down out of heaven from God. He said it was dressed like a beautiful bride for her husband.
8. How have you experienced the presence of God in the last year? Be specific. – I’ve seen God’s presence in the health of myself and my family during this pandemic. We have all stayed safe, He has kept us healthy and strong. He has provided for me by keeping my job available to me by working remotely.
9. Meditate on Revelation 21:3-7 and find things that you have “tasted” here on earth but that will be complete and continuous in the New Jerusalem. Take time with this – I have seen God making things new, he is cleaning up the mess we have made of this world to get it ready for the new earth. I have seen him help us overcome many obstacles, my single mom days, my husband’s cancer, this pandemic. I have seen God more closely. I have been able to feel his presence so much stronger. And all of these will either be wiped away, or made stronger more.
10. Why does God tell John to write these things down, according to verse 5? – Would the writing down be part of prophecy? To be added for all of us to know that it was from God and like the verse says is true.
11. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect the way you live? And why is He telling you this today? – I definitely believe that it is true and I need to be living with a grateful heart with the provisions that are provided to me by God on a daily basis. I feel he is giving me hope in a world that has grown weary and saddened by the hatred shown. He is showing that He is still with us and will continue to be if we hold on to the truth of His Word.
Julie: sounds like you have been through so much in the past with your husband’s cancer and your single Mom days. That must have been so very hard for you and your kids also. There truly is so much pain in this world. May God continue to bring healing to us all and our loved ones.
I think we often don’t even see the healing our own hearts still need from all we have walked through. Especially when we are so used to “being the strong ones” for others. I know my Mum didn’t and that she was so thankful to God for the healing He brought her own heart, ironically as she lay dying from cancer.
You bring so much encouragement here, Julie.
Julie: please forgive my comment. It was out of place and hurtful. It is coming from a place of bitterness and unforgiveness in my own heart and I am suggesting you need heart healing, when I am the one who does.
Day 3. The New Jerusalem
7. Read Revelation 21:2 and describe what John sees, noting both symbols or metaphors:
He sees the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
The holy city can also be found in this verse: Isaiah 52:1 ESV
Awake, awake,
put on your strength, O Zion;
put on your beautiful garments,
O Jerusalem, the holy city;
for there shall no more come into you
the uncircumcised and the unclean.
Holy means set apart unto God, so it is a city – dwelling place of man – set apart unto God.
The new city is also mentioned in Revelations 3:12 (ESV):
The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
That it comes down from heaven suggests it is not man-made, which we also see in Hebrews 11:10 (ESV):
For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
The preparing of the Bride is also mentioned in Revelations 19:7 (ESV)
Let us rejoice and exult
and give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his Bride has made herself ready;
In verse 8 of Revelations we learn that the getting herself ready had to do with the righteous deeds of the Saints, that flow from the sanctifying work of Christ:
“it was granted her to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”—
for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.”
So, like Dee pointed out, it all points to Jesus and His creating, moulding and shaping and not to us.
8. How have you experienced the presence of God in the last year? Be specific.
Through His call to step out in faith to pursue work as a writing coach. He opened one door after another, through which I had the privilege of learning from and being affirmed and encouraged by various university experts in the field of writer education.
I cried as God showed me that I wasn’t useless and good for nothing, but rather uniquely equipped and filled with His wisdom and insight to bless others. He set me before people who reminded me that I was created for a purpose and not to sit in a corner ashamed and afraid, when I have so much to give. I realized then that I had without really realizing it let the words spoken over me in various places define me.
But so like God, what unfolded at the end of the year took me by surprise. God had commanded me to walk through each open door He set before me. Slowly, step by step, it looked like I might just be able to get my foot in the door at my former high school to offer free writer coaching to struggling kids. But then suddenly all doors slammed shut.
I felt so discouraged and yet even in that discouragement God reminded me what my physio had said to me mere weeks earlier: “oh how I would love for my daughter to get that help you are wanting to give. Once you get your business all set up, give me a call.” And so, I began to think and pray about the way to go forward.
But then, out of the blue, the high school that had slammed all doors shut suddenly called offering me a very part-time job: teaching one 5th year class of high school the English Baccalaureate Diploma programme to help cover a maternity leave of one of the two teachers who had taken over, when I left the year my Mum died. I said no, because I had sworn I would never teach again because of a really horrible experience a year earlier, when I tried to return to teaching at a local high school with third years.
But the head of the bilingual department encouraged me to please take the weekend to think about it. I told her to expect a no but that I would think about it. It’s then, as I prayed and talked to my husband about it, I remembered my promise to God to walk through ALL doors He opened to me at that school.
I had promised that as I walked from the train station to my first meeting with the heads of two departments. I had said: “God, I lay all in Your hands: all my plans and all my thoughts about how this should go. May You have Your Way in all that unfolds.”
So, at the end of the weekend I let her know that it was a tentative yes, with various conditions from my end to make it doable for me and my family (with my own kids in lock-down and doing homeschool also). She surprisingly met every single one of my conditions and upon meeting the two teachers I would work with and seeing the material I had to teach with, I said yes.
Immediately, God showed me His part in all this, when I saw how even the material I had to read up on began to change the structure and content of my own writing and my heart to come alongside my readers, as Nelson Mandela came alongside his in compassion and firm encouragement.
He again reminded me that in Him all things make up part of the whole. Not one part of our lives can be compartmentalized and separated from another. All are woven together by Him according to His purpose for us and others.
There is so much more I could say, but above all through this God opened my eyes to see His Presence with me and how He wants me to flourish in all that I do, to trust Him at His Word and to not to believe lies the enemy has repeatedly spoken over me.
9. Meditate on Revelation 21:3-7 and find things that you have “tasted” here on earth but that will be complete and continuous in the New Jerusalem. Take time with this
The comfort of God. Him wiping away my tears. Oh how He has done this again and again and yet then He will do it in person and I will know that I will never ever again have to feel the pain that led to those very tears, ever again.
The presence of God through His Holy Spirit, His Word and His people. The thought that this will be complete and continuous in the absence of my sin that right now continually causes me to feel a separation again and again, is glorious. What I know to be true by faith, I will taste as truth in the physical and not just the spiritual realm, as God’s Promises to me manifest before me.
The redemption of God. He has redeemed so very much already, but oh how I cannot wait to see the full masterpiece He has been weaving. My spiritual Mom and I talk about this a lot, as we have seen details in God’s weaving even between our families a world apart that astound us. And to know that there is so much more we do not know: wow!
The restoration of God. I have seen God restore me to Him and many others too. But oh how I long to see Him restore many others unto Himself: to see the Promises of His Word He has rooted in my heart unfold in the physical: wow! To see the Prodigals I love return home and their children and their children’s children. I will not be able to stop weeping and to stop praising my God, who is so worthy to be praised!!!
The healing of God. I cannot wait to see my Mum, healed and whole. I cannot wait to see the babies of loved ones, who died in the womb or moments after being born fully healed and whole. I cannot wait for all pain to cease, to see my own body, mind and heart and all my loved ones’ bodies, hearts and minds, fully healed from all trauma, illness, pain and sin.
The justice of God. I have personally experienced the overwhelming joy around me, as the Berlin Wall fell when we lived in then West Germany, as friends of ours in Romania celebrated their freedom to worship God without the fear of execution. I have praised God at the uncovering of physical, sexual and spiritual abuse in churches and the justice and healing coming to those who have suffered so much. I have thanked God at the unity He is bringing between different nationalities and races. But oh how amazing it will be to see all wrongs righted and no more injustice plague this earth.
10. Why does God tell John to write these things down, according to verse 5?
Because these words are trustworthy and true.
11. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect the way you live? And why is He telling you this today?
I should live filled with hope for the future, even when everything looks really bleak in the physical. I think He is telling me this because I have been struggling with my health this past week and He wants to shift my thoughts from worry to trust and praise.
The head of the bilingual department was wise in asking you to think about it (and you thought and prayed). How often we need to pray before we leap.
Yes. We so do. She was God’s grace to me. It’s crazy how blind I was in at first saying no, because I prayed fervently through each step until then. It just didn’t fit the route I thought God was taking me and I let bad memories influence me too: but that should have been my cue that this was His doing. His ways and thoughts are so much higher.
Day 4. Dressed As A Bride
11. How have you tasted the joy of being a bride on earth, of true communion with your husband — or, if you haven’t, how do you imagine it to be?
I won’t ever forget the look of pride in my husband’s eyes, as I walked down the aisle. God has truly shown me His love for me through my husband.
When I met him, I hated myself and felt no one would ever desire me. But my husband pursued me and delighted in me in ways that just stunned me.
I can look back and see God’s hand in every detail of our very unlikely meeting in a foreign country for us both, his keen pursuit of me and our joining together.
Even though my husband doesn’t believe, I see God uniting our hearts in Him in so many ways. My husband is God’s truth speaker to me, who refuses to allow me to sink into and wallow in lies, sin and shame. He is God’s mercy and compassion in my life. I see God honoring His Promise to me daily:
1 Corinthians 7:14 ESV
For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
12. What insight do the following verses give us on the beautiful kaleidoscope of meanings connected to this metaphor?
A. Isaiah 62:5
The union of man and wife. The rejoicing of a husband over his bride.
B. Song of Songs 2:8-13
This picture reminds me of the Bride/woman being placed in the wilderness for her own protection through the birthing process and these verses feel like the unveiling of this Bride and the joy of the birth. The Bridegroom has come for His Bride.
I love the various meanings of that word: to experience, know intimately as man and wife, to discipline, to instruct, to investigate, to learn, to know as friends, to make known (to). It will be so amazing to know God in full, rather than only in part, when our sinful flesh is fully stripped away:
1 Corinthians 13:12 ESV
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
13. Charles Spurgeon noted that “the Song of love [the Song of Songs] and the Book of love [the Bible] end in almost the selfsame way, with a strong desire for Christ’s speedy return.” See if you can find it in each, and then share what God is communicating with this.
Song of Songs 8:14 ESV
Make haste, my beloved,
and be like a gazelle
or a young stag
on the mountains of spices.
Revelations 22:20 ESV
He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
Our mutual desire for full communion. His and His Bride’s. We desire to be together, whole and complete in Him.
14. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect your life?
I should be continually seeking first the Kingdom of God. Daily seeking and yielding to God’s will for me.
15. Give praise to God.
Thank You, Father, that Your Words are trustworthy and true. Thank You that You yearn for full communion with us, Your people. Thank You that You desire the return of Your sheep and lambs and that my yearning to see that unfold is a yearning You have planted deep within me.
I praise You for Your patient and loving sanctifying work in me, for preparing me to meet You face to face and to know in full what I now know but in part. Thank You for yielding up Your very own Son to set me free to know You more and more each day.
Thank You for the Promise of the new heaven and the new earth, for no more sin, no more dying and no more pain. Thank You for who You are: our Promise Keeper, trustworthy and true. Amen.
11. How have you tasted the joy of being a bride on earth, of true communion with your husband — or, if you haven’t, how do you imagine it to be?
When you say “true communion with your husband,” do you mean with God? If so, I’m not sure I’ve tasted that before. I do think I have had times when I felt SO in tune with Him, and times (lots) when I have not felt his presence at all.
If you mean with my actual husband, then I can only surmise that closeness would be in the marriage bed….
12. What insight do the following verses give us on the beautiful kaleidoscope of meanings connected to this metaphor?
A. Isaiah 62:5
Here the bride and groom are mentioned. Particularly the consummation of their marriage.
B. Song of Songs 2:8-13
Here the persistent lover is pushing her; asking her to join Him.
I did mean earthly husband — but then to use that to help you understand what is possible with Christ.
Day 3. The New Jerusalem
7. Read Revelation 21:2 and describe what John sees, noting both symbols or metaphor
John saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem coming down out of Heaven from God prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. It would seem to me that the richness of beauty in this imagery might be a little bit lost for us in this modern day world. There is a lot of superficiality in the modern day world of weddings. The reason I say that is because in his sermon last Sunday my son was preaching from Isaiah 61 and 62 where the metaphor of the bridegroom and the bride and marriage are used. It speaks of the bridegroom dressed like a priest with a beautiful headless and the bride adorned with her jewels. He showed a picture of a bride and groom from a near eastern wedding probably not unlike what Isaiah and even John would have been familiar with. The beauty of the headless, her jewelry and the intricate embroidery of sequined fabric and deep rich color of their robes were breathtaking in beauty. I think it is significant that the new Jerusalem comes from God and is prepared by God. Isaiah 61:10 says “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” I think the reference of being clothed with the garments of salvation and covered with the robe of righteousness are a significant part of what we will experience when the New Jerusalem comes from God.
8. How have you experienced the presence of God in the last year? Be specific.
There are a number of ways I have experienced the presence God this last year. In times of discouragement He has brought hope through the study of his Word and in prayer. When I had Covid He was so close to me. When plans were changed and restrictions imposed He remained my encourager. God faithfully has been with my husband and I in decision making and traveling we did last year in spite of Covid. He allowed us good and meaningful time with our children and close friends. I experienced His presence as our church continued to meet through the worship music and the scriptures being taught. It was a different and unusual way that we did things but He remained among us. As our small group has come together again in our home on Wednesday evenings in the time of sharing and and praying God has blessed us with a sense of the importance of assembling ourselves together in person and it has been good.
9. Meditate on Revelation 21:3-7 and find things that you have “tasted” here on earth but that will be complete and continuous in the New Jerusalem. Take time with this
In verse 3 the statement that the dwelling place of God is with man and that He will dwell with them and they will be his people speaks to the incarnation of Christ and the meaning of Immanuel which is “God with us”. Upon believing in and accepting Jesus as our Savior the Holy Spirit of God comes to dwell within us and we become a dwelling place for God. We have experienced and tasted God’s redeeming work of salvation and forgiveness leading to a righteousness that is not our own but from God. When He returns and all things are made new we will be free of our sinful flesh and complete and pure “adorned” in His righteousness. What a glorious thought!
10. Why does God tell John to write these things down, according to verse 5?
Because they are TRUTH. They will happen. We can count on it. This is ultimate prophecy of things to come from Jesus’s own mouth.
11. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect the way you live? And why is He telling you this today?
It should and does give me great hope. It gives meaning and purpose for living. It is the incredible truth of the gospel offered in knowing Jesus the Christ. He came to earth. He lived a sinless life and died in my place on the Cross. He rose again from the dead to life. He ascended to Heaven and makes intercession to God the Father on my behalf. And He is coming again to take me to live with him eternally in a place He is preparing that will be completely new and perfect. I need to be telling others this “good news”.
What a gift to meet up in person each week on the Wednesday. That is so good you have made an effort to keep that up despite everything going on. We are still in a partial lockdown here (one visitor per household) because of corona numbers.
I love that thought of being adorned in His righteousness. Been one of those discouraging days, where I so need that reminder of His beauty clothing me in all my failings. Thank you for honing in on that, Bev.
11. How have you tasted the joy of being a bride on earth, of true communion with your husband — or, if you haven’t, how do you imagine it to be?Not having experienced it, I imagine that despite anxieties, fatigue from the preparation, and nervous anticipation- all these things fade as the Joy grows up the moment that everyone celebrates with you.12. What insight do the following verses give us on the beautiful kaleidoscope of meanings connected to this metaphor?A. Isaiah 62:5- There is a rejoicing in the commitment, not a begrudging bindB. Song of Songs 2:8-13- The promises are made with a sense of longing- Promises kept in leaping love C. Challenge question: The same Hebrew word”yada” (translated “Knew” in KJV) is used in Genesis 4:1 and Deut. 34:10. Look them both up and contemplate what this may mean when we consider what this could mean both now, in our relationship with God, and how it might be completed in the New Heaven and the New Earth.Intimacy now with God means knowing as by seeing and experiencing through a dim mirror, in the New Heaven and New Earth the intimacy will be all senses of our new body- maybe we will have new senses? But I will be fully known and I will intimacy with my Lord fully- as He desires
13. Charles Spurgeon noted that “the Song of love [the Song of Songs] and the Book of love [the Bible] end in almost the selfsame way, with a strong desire for Christ’s speedy return.” See if you can find it in each, and then share what God is communicating with this.God is communicating to me- I have created you for me. I have created you for union with me. Look to that day as we get to know each other now.
14. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect your life?If I really believe this, I will be looking for Him in more places in more spaces of time.
15. Give praise to God.You who created me to be one with you, You who alone satisfied completely-You are beautiful and goodIn bated breath I wait for your next perfect wordWith anticipation I wait for our Day
“Not a begrudging bind” — good — like “His commandments are not burdensome”
Day 4. Dressed As A Bride
11. How have you tasted the joy of being a bride on earth, of true communion with your husband — or, if you haven’t, how do you imagine it to be? – I’ve been married to my current husband 12 1/2 years now. We have grown as a couple and I know at times I feel like he hovers, but I know it is his way of protecting me. Like my heavenly Father would protect me, my husband is doing what he is called to do as an earthly husband. We have had hard times, but together we have gotten through them by being there for each other when the need is there. It is a blessing to know that someone cares for me and loves me like he does. He was a gift from God for sure.
12. What insight do the following verses give us on the beautiful kaleidoscope of meanings connected to this metaphor?
A. Isaiah 62:5 – Well my text note says that ‘son’ could also be replaced with Builder. So since Builder is capitalized I’m thinking this is referring to God as my creator and will come back as a bridegroom to get his bride.
B. Song of Songs 2:8-13 – Oh this is hard for me with the poetry writing in this book. Is it representing God and Jesus who will take care of me. Coming back to get us and loving us as his bride?
C. Challenge question: The same Hebrew word “yada” (translated “Knew” in KJV) is used in Genesis 4:1 and Deut. 34:10. Look them both up and contemplate what this may mean when we consider what this could mean both now, in our relationship with God, and how it might be completed in the New Heaven and the New Earth. – I’m not seeing it Genesis 4.1 but in Deut 34.10 the verse make it seem like God favored Moses highly and had a very close relationship with him. That God of course knew every intricate thing about Moses. In the New Heaven and the New Earth, I think God again will bless Moses because of the close relationship with he has with him.
13. Charles Spurgeon noted that “the Song of love [the Song of Songs] and the Book of love [the Bible] end in almost the selfsame way, with a strong desire for Christ’s speedy return.” See if you can find it in each, and then share what God is communicating with this. – I’m not really sure on this. I will have to see what others are saying. I see that he is coming soon and asks for us to come away with him.
14. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect your life? – To know there is hope still to come with the New Heaven and the New Earth I need to joyfully live my life in expectancy until that comes. I don’t need to live in fear or in doom. He is coming back for us and will take us to our freedom.
15. Give praise to God. – Thank you Lord for all you have done for us. We would not be where we are today without you. You alone are the only one that can carry us through the trials and obstacle we face. Thank you for loving us so much and covering us with your peace and comfort. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.
Translations differ on Gen 4:1 — some say Adam knew, some say Adam made love…
Day 3
9. Meditate on Revelation 21:3-7 and find things that you have “tasted” here on earth but that will be complete and continuous in the New Jerusalem. Take time with this.
Our hearts are God’s home right now through the Holy Spirit, but one day God Himself will live with and be with all His people. The fellowship that we have now with other believers although necessary, is marred by our humanness, but one day there will be perfect fellowship.
10. Why does God tell John to write these things down, according to verse 5?
Because they are trustworthy.
11. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect the way you live? And why is He telling you this today?
It should remind me that my hope is in God alone and to be sharing the gospel so others can have this same hope is why He is telling me this.
Day 4
11. How have you tasted the joy of being a bride on earth, of true communion with your husband — or, if you haven’t, how do you imagine it to be?
I’m just gonna say, I have the best husband! He loves the Lord and models the Ephesians 5 husband, as he understands that in order for a wife to be submissive the husband must love her. I’m not saying he’s perfect but he had an awesome example in his parents marriage. I told my daughter that if you want to know what kind of husband a man will be, you will most likely see it in his parents marriage. I thank the Lord for him everyday.
12. What insight do the following verses give us on the beautiful kaleidoscope of meanings connected to this metaphor?
A. Isaiah 62:5
God will rejoice over us just as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride.
B. Song of Songs 2:8-13
Im not really sure. Is the woman daydreaming of spending a spring day with her beloved and what it would be like?
Love hearing about your marriage! 🙂 Don and Carolyn did model well!
You weren’t with us when we did Song of Songs. I think you are going to love Michael Reeves tomorrow!
That’s great advice for your daughter, Sharon. I see that in my husband also: his parents show great love and devotion to one another and have been married for more than 50 years now. They certainly set a great example for him, as did my parents for me.
This is my first time reading tis study. I have visited this site often.
Welcome Catherine…it has been a blessing and encouragement to me!
Hello, Catherine! Welcome!
Welcome, Catherine.
Day 4. Dressed As A Bride
11. How have you tasted the joy of being a bride on earth, of true communion with your husband — or, if you haven’t, how do you imagine it to be?
It was my experience to be a bride almost 54 years ago. We were kids. Literally. We were both 18 but one of the things that stood out to me that night was how Terry kept telling me how beautiful I was when he saw me in my wedding dress. It wasn’t his habit to make much of how I looked. I never in my life had felt like the prettiest girl in the room but he seemed struck by my appearance as his bride. That night I knew I was loved and wanted but it would be years before I came to realize my God and Savior in perfection felt the same toward me.
12. What insight do the following verses give us on the beautiful kaleidoscope of meanings connected to this metaphor?
A. Isaiah 62:5
The bridegroom rejoicing over the bride is what I experienced from my husband. And interesting I made reference to this very passage yesterday in answer to Day 3 questions because the sermon at church last Sunday was from Isaiah 61 & 62 and the message highlighted God’s love and rejoicing over us individually as a bridegroom does over his bride.
B. Song of Songs 2:8-13
The wooing of the Bridegroom, The Beloved calling his Bride to come and enjoy the new Season and it’s beauty is a beautiful picture of what will take place as we see in the Revelation when Jesus calls his church to himself to the new Heaven and the new earth.
There is an ultimate intimacy in the physical union of Adam and Eve. Marriage as God intended is earth’s picture of coming together in intimacy. There is also an ultimate intimacy in the spiritual communion Moses experienced with God (face to face). They are both pictures of it gets as close as it can get. Because of the wonderful work of salvation that Jesus accomplished I have the privilege through the power of the Holy Spirit living in me to enter into a close and intimate relationship with God. I think just how that may be completed for me in the New Heaven and the New Earth is beyond comprehension.
13. Charles Spurgeon noted that “the Song of love [the Song of Songs] and the Book of love [the Bible] end in almost the selfsame way, with a strong desire for Christ’s speedy return.” See if you can find it in each, and then share what God is communicating with this.
At the end of the Song of Solomon the bridegroom speaks of listening for her voice and she replies with a response of welcome and anxiousness for Him to come to her. It likens to Revelation 22:20 where He says I am coming soon and her saying “Yes Come, Lord Jesus!”
14. If you really believe this is true, how should it affect your life?
I have found in the trying times we are living in and all the troubles of this sinful, fallen broken world I have a wonderful Hope found only in Jesus and my relationship with Him. He has told me he is coming back and whether it will be at my physical death from this life or His return for his church I am filled with anticipation of being with Him complete and whole. I find I have a joy and this old world needs Christ followers to be holding forth that joy more than ever.
15. Give praise to God.
Father I praise you for your Word and these wonderful truths that are real and are ours. We are a people of great and wonderful hope. I praise you that you have a wonderful plan that has been revealed in these scriptures that give us a future and a hope. I praise you that we have the promise of your return and we will spend eternity with you. I praise you for the deep and abiding love you have for your own and that it is my privilege to be one of your much loved daughters. I am overwhelmed by your grace. Thankyou
Love that wedding day memory!
Day 4
This was by far my most favorite sermon, ever. Oh what a HUGE blessing this was. Thank you for this so much, Dee. Here are my notes:
The doctrine of heaven is of earthly good now.
The rich misuse this idea of heaven: “don’t get so upset about injustice here.”
Those who are most heavenly minded are in fact of most earthly good.
How does heaven make us live a good life here?
1 Heaven gives you a reason for living sacrificially on earth:
Heaven comes down: heaven is the healing of this world. Heaven is an atmosphere of the glory of God.
Revelation 22 is telling us about Genesis. A curse descends in Genesis. We psychologically, socially and physically fall apart because of the curse. Heaven is the healing & rehabilitation of this world. Therefore, heaven gives us a reason and motivation to take suffering seriously.
Why did Christianity grow in the Roman Empire. Two great plagues came through (maybe smallpox and measles). 35000 people a day dying in Rome (when they had 1 million people). Spread through contact: the rich and doctors got out of cities. They left the sick but not the Christians. They had dynamic nursing systems and many of them died in caring for others.
Christians had the assurance of heaven. Rodney Starks (historian): doctor Gaelin would have needed bravery far beyond that needed by Christians because of his different world view. Because Christians didn’t abandon each other, the growth rate was exponential: upsurge in Pagans conversions to Christianity and biological growth.
Christians did what was true and for God’s glory but in the long run there was tremendous success: the knowledge of heaven made them healers & heroes.
2. We are given strength for earthly good
Early church faced incredible persecution. Revelations helps us imagine heaven. Jonathan Edwards preached on Revelations and the word “like”= like transparent gold. The Bible is asking us to imagine it, to bring it along. And then to realize it’s infinitely better. The Bible demands us to embody it and know it is infinitely better.
Romans 8:18
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
Worry: is imagening, depicting, embodying what bad could happen.
Paul says to do the same thing but with God’s glory. Think upon that and you will not worry. Take the truth and think about it until it overwhelms you and takes you over.
The Bible is calling us to enter poetry.
Sam in Lord of the Rings: when all seemed helpless and his own defiance could no longer carry him:
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”
“You aren’t going to live a great Christian life, until the beauty of it all (heaven/the glory) smites your heart.”
“You’re called to inner poetry, to inner artistry. At least in your heart.” Because heaven gives you the ability to face anything at all.
Jonathan Edwards spent all his time meditating on heaven…if you do that suffering becomes of no worth.
3. Heaven takes the pressure off. Gives you the ability to enjoy the here and now.
A spouse, a lover, a child, a job: are bridges and they crack. You can have the perfect job/spouse but not satisfy your craving for love. Unless heaven is a reality to you, you will put too much pressure on these things/people and the bridge will crack. It cannot bear your whole weight. We have to look at these peoples and things as parks (a place to visit): not as our home. These things should only remind us of our true home.
If you are grumpy about it: it’s your fault.
Throughout this text Jesus is a Lamb. When the Gospel hits you and you’re saved strictly by grace: the Lamb dying for you (the substitute for you). There is nothing there but God. The good deeds are to say thank you. I obey Him for the beauty of what He is. Only people who just want Him will be there.
Colossians 3:2-3 ESV
Set your mind upon things which are above, not on earthly things. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
And his beautiful sermon inspired me to marinate in truth and beauty. It helped me finish a poem I have been sitting with for days:
My trembling hand
You take a hold
In Your righteous
Upright hand clasp tight.
My fears
Dissolving
In Your Lion heart
My lot declared: secure.
Dying to my sin
Life ever breathing
In my weakness
Power is perfecting me.
No longer I
But You: Christ in me
My morning star
You’re ever rising.
In Your dawning
Light and warmth
The twisting, fleeing dragon
Lies: exposed, to crush.
My icy resolve to flee
The pain: melting
My stone cold heart
In Your touch: awakes.
My knees bow low
In Your lifeblood: humbled
In Your gentle heart
To flow.
Anna, this poem is beautiful! I love this kind where it does not have to have rhythm or number of syllables. I love to do haikus and thought of working on those when I retire. Hah- I am praying so.
Oh how I pray Jesus looses that gift of poetry anew in you too, Bing. I just know it will bless your heart also.
Writing poems has been such a delight for me and truly draws me near to God. It is an unexpected gift God dropped back into my lap a few years ago and it’s what He used to tether me to Himself through so much. It’s one of my favorite ways to worship Him. Each poem is one I have lived out with Jesus.
Anna — that’s so encouraging about the sermon — and great notes.
Sharon: this made me think of you because of what you shared about your health. My verse to pray today was:
Isaiah 40:31but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles;they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Guess what “renew their strength” can also mean according to the alternate meanings given in the NASB lexicon?! “Pass away their power/wealth” and “Pierce their power/wealth” and “Cut off their power/wealth”. And to mount up also means: “burnt offerings, dawn, light, rise, taken away, spring”.
Do you see what I see?! The more we fade away here on earth, the more prayers (burnt offerings) and light and dawn appear. Isn’t that a glorious thought?!! And it’s so true too. It so fit with today’s sermon on heaven and the glory of God too.
I love that the Word to “wait for” here also means: to “look, eagerly wait, hopefully wait, hope, wait patiently” and to “run and not be weary” can also mean to “courier, guard, be helpful” and not “have pain, not faint, not toil/labor” and to walk also means to “flow, blow, follow”. Such rich imagery, or as Keller would put it “inner poetry” to smite our heart with the beauty of God.
Beautiful poem Anna. And rich thoughts on Isaiah 40:31. Thanks for sharing.
Bev: I am so sorry for the pain your dear friend is walking through with cancer. I remember how we prayed for God to take my Mum home at the end. We longed for her to be free of pain and healed and whole. Hugs! May you all know God’s nearness in such a fresh way in these coming days. May you feel His arms wrap around you.
Your friend is surely living out this verse: that eagerly waiting for Him to take her home. She will be oozing heaven’s breath. It’s truly like the veil is thinner in places where God is calling His saints home.
A lady I knew from my Anglican church worked as a hospice nurse and told me she always knew the believers by the peace resting upon them.
Anna, please know that I’m not ignoring you but rather letting what you said percolate within my mind. This is one of my favorite verses and what you said, “the more we fade away here on earth, the more prayers, light and dawn appear” is so good. It reminds me of what Paul says in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness. So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” Waiting can cause one to lose hope, but this verse reminds me that waiting on the Lord is what’s important and gives me renewed strength. As you say in your poem,”no longer I, but You: Christ in me.”
Thank you for this Anna and I really enjoyed your poem.
I so love that verse from Paul. I remember learning that Biblical hope is an active hope: it is a cord or rope that is bound (tikvah). Much like the red cord that Rahab hung from the window. My spiritual Mom and I once wrote a devotional on it for parents of Prodigals, talking about how we bind that cord of hope and faith around our loved ones as we pray God’s Promises over them. It was such a blessing to our own hearts. And as we prepared it, God reminded me of something miraculous that had unfolded as I grieved for a Prodigal loved one – where He put someone on my path from her past who spoke something so direct and so connected to her that I was floored. It was like He was saying: what will you believe: My Word to you, or your own fears and pain? It’s then I could take the verse He had given me for her and speak it over her in faith and it’s then I began to look for Him in her life and I could see Him in so much and it made me weep and weep.
Day 4. Heaven
16. Listen to the Tim Keller sermon above and share your notes and comments.
Quick overview of the sermon.
The reality of Heaven stirs something in all of us. There is a longing for Heaven in everyone.
The Revelation was written for a certain people for a certain reason. At the time it was for a persecuted people to give them hope as they endured their trouble times. It is no less for us today living in this same fallen broken world.
The doctrine of Heaven is of great earthly good. The most heavenly minded are actually of the most earthly good.
The ways Heaven make us life a good life here on earth:
1. Heaven gives a reason for living a good life.
In the biblical view it will bring the healing of the nations as all things are made new. The curse will be gone. Heaven is not an alternative to this world but it will be a complete and perfect rehab of it. Heaven is the glory of God.
2. Heaven gives us strength for living good lives.
Strength to endure persecution.
Heaven is “like” things we compare it to on earth. Like streets of pure gold but it actually is infinitely beyond anything we can think of. We try to imagine what it is like.
Romans 8:18 Says the suffering can not compare with the glory. We are to think about the glory.
Christianity is not a spirit to catch. Christianity takes the Truth and says think about it. Compare it to the world in your mind. Meditate on and consider the glory to be revealed. We are called to an inner poetry. Let the beauty smite your heart as Sam said in what Tolkien wrote.
3. Heaven gives you goals beyond this earth in order to enjoy this earth.
Heaven takes the pressure off of life here. It meets a deep need for love in our souls. In this world we will always want more. Heaven alone fulfills our needs.
We are to set our minds on things above.
This is a very cursory outline of what Keller preached but it was a very encouraging message of the future and hope we have in Jesus the Lamb of God Who will be our focus for eternity and happily so.
Day 4. Heaven
16. Listen to the Tim Keller sermon above and share your notes and comments. – I don’t know if it was me or what was going on in my head, but I had a harder time following this sermon this time, but this is what I got out of it.
* Keller believes we all believe in Heaven whether we think so or not.
* Revelation was written for those of us who were going to go through some kind of suffering.
* John wanted us to know through God that we are equipped to live a certain life now
* The Bible says that the most heavenly minded people are the most earthly good
* How does heaven make us live a wonder quality of life now? 1. Heaven gives us a reason for living a good life; 2. Heaven gives us the strength we need to get through; 3. Heaven gives us the goals to see beyond and takes the pressure off.
* Heaven is the healing of this world. It comes from God and heals anything it touches. It is the glory of God, it’s the rehabilitation of this life. Christians stayed when a crisis broke out because it was true and not practical. The knowledge of heaven made them heroes and healers
* Heave gives us the strength we need to face obstacles. Christians faced persecution not plaques. Keller says we need to think of Heaven is like…The Bible is for us to imagine what heaven is like. It depicts what heaven is like but we then need to realize it is so much more than what heaven is compared to. We will never be able to overcome obstacles in life without imagining what heaven depicts.
* Heaven takes the pressure off and helps us have goals to see beyond.
* Whatever things we think highly of are just bridges. We can’t put the weight of our soul on them or they will break and we won’t be able to enjoy them since they aren’t fulfilling our needs.
* Jesus is always called the Lamb in Revelation because he was our substitute and we have gotten everything from Him.
* The Gospel alone, is what makes you want to rejoice in God. Some who don’t know the Gospel will not know to rejoice in God.
* It is only through the Lamb that you get the New Heaven.
I love this amplified version of 2 Cor 4:17 as I think of what I am learning in Revelation. For our momentary, light distress [this passing trouble] is producing for us an eternal weight of glory [a fullness] beyond all measure [surpassing all comparisons, a transcendent splendor, and an endless blessedness]!
God is working throughout history, the good and the bad, to bring about true and eternal joy to His people. A fullness of everything good, beyond what I can imagine. We were made for another world as C.S. Lewis said.
The book of Revelation has given me a sense of surety that God is in control. And every day I have a choice to make: trust Him or trust myself and others.
I have found myself pausing more and quietly seeking Him as I go about my day because I know He is in charge and I can live every day in a position of victory. I love the practice that one of the ladies shared here a while ago. It is appropriately called, Pause by John Eldredge: Jesus, I give everyone and everything to you, O God. I give myself to you, Jesus for union with you. I need more of you, God Fill me more of you.
Great ap from Eldredge!
I love this. So true: “God is working throughout history, the good and the bad, to bring about true and eternal joy to His people. A fullness of everything good, beyond what I can imagine.”
Bing,
Yes! I have been using the PAUSE app by John Eldridge since the Pandemic hit. So helpful.
I love verse 18. In the NLT it says “Be glad; rejoice forever in my creation! And look! I will create Jerusalem as a place of happiness. Her people will be a source of joy.” And then verse 19 God says “ I will rejoice over Jerusalem and delight in my people.” That all speaks to me of the wonderful and complete relationship we will enjoy with our God and Creator when all things are made new.
I liked that phrase “We don’t need a bucket list—we will have it all, only better.
B. Romans 8:21-23
Paul acknowledges the struggle of this life and living in these decaying bodies but these verses exude with hope of what is to come. Through the Holy Spirit living in us we have a foretaste of future glory but oh how we long for what is to come. We then as His “adopted” children will gain full rights as His sons and daughters.
C. I Corin. 15:35-37
These scriptures are talking about the resurrection bodies we will have someday and again these verses exude with hope. This affirms there will be a resurrection of our bodies and on down in the passage verses 42-44 enlarge on this. “It is the same way with the resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever. Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength. They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.”
1 Corinthians 15:42-44 NLT
This very hope is why we groan to be released from these broken bodies. I have a sweet friend who is at the end of her life in a body that is broken and riddled with cancer. She is one of the sweetest Christians I have known and is deeply loved by her friends and family but at this point we long for her resurrection body and that day when we will be together in spiritually complete bodies. If it were not for the wonderful hope we have we would all despair of this life. That little foretaste of Heaven keeps us going.
18. What do you think you will remember from the Overview of Revelation — what will stick and transform you?
That is is all about Jesus! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. It will all culminate in a Him! It has deepened my love and longing for him to return as He has promised. I want to finish my life well sharing this wonderful hope with others. Amen! Come Lord Jesus!
Love your enthusiasm and heart, Bev
That is is all about Jesus! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. It will all culminate in a Him! It has deepened my love and longing for him to return as He has promised. I want to finish my life well sharing this wonderful hope with others. Amen! Come Lord Jesus!
I found an article in Ibelieve.com written by Debbie McDaniel and framed some portions to be a prayer for us.
“God, thank you that you have not left us to fight this spiritual battle alone. You are the One who fights on behalf of your own, constantly shielding, protecting, strengthening, even when we are unaware. We never fight alone. You are with us. Always. Thank you for your words that are true and powerful (Revelation) so that we’ll have the wisdom to stand against the enemy. The enemy, no matter how vicious his schemes, can never chain our spirits that have been set free by Christ. Thank you that we do not have to walk in fear. For when we belong to Christ, the enemy never has the final word. We are secure in Your hands, and you tell us to stand firm (Ephesians 6). Whether in life or in death, may we always be found standing firm for the cause of Christ. For in Jesus’ name, the Alpha and Omega, the victorious Warrior King, I pray these things, Amen.
Wonderful Bing! Thank you.
What a beautiful prayer. Thank you, Bing.
18. What do you think you will remember from the Overview of Revelation — what will stick and transform you? This has been such a rich study and while I haven’t answered the questions online, I have read everyone’s comments, listened to the sermons and have been answering the questions personally.
So much of this weeks’ study has just driven home what I know/hope for in the afterlife (although it’s more of a continued life). I will have all of eternity to enjoy this earth as it was meant to be so I can use my time right now seeking the lost, helping the underprivileged and doing what I can to ease the suffering of others.
I have become more conscience of the importance of keeping my trust not in any person or thing in this world, but on the only One who is worthy.
Wonderful take-away, Dawn.

Day 5
17. What do you learn about this (the renewal of all things) from the following?
A. Isaiah 65:17-25
No more weeping, no more hurt, no more dying young, no more toiling in vain, instead God delighting in us and us enjoying our work in a place of peace in Him. What a glorious future we are running toward!
B. Romans 8:21-23
That creation and we, the children of God, shall experience complete redemption, as our adoption as His children is completed. Our bodies will be completely redeemed from the corruption of sinful flesh, the redemption we have a foretaste of (the first fruits of) now through the Spirit of God at work in us. What a glorious hope to look forward to. Full communion with our Abba Father in bodies that glorify Him fully and wholly.
C. I Corin. 15:35-37
The body we die in will not be the body we are raised in. The body we inhabit here is but a bare kernel of the heavenly body that awaits us. Like Bev, I also love the verses that come hereafter: it so blesses me to dwell on the transformation to come.

God’s Presence in our midst here. The song Bing had shared kept reverberating in me all week and was such a gift from God: “no more pain”. And then the sermon from Keller spoke to that even more deeply. And just the way I saw God’s love and compassion flow between people here. Bev: this week especially, your comments were a salve: so set upon Jesus and our hope in Him.
I am going to remember this:
“You aren’t going to live a great Christian life, until the beauty of it all (heaven/the glory of God) smites your heart.” Tim Keller
&
Colossians 3:2-3 ESV
Set your mind upon things which are above, not on earthly things. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
My prayer is now for God to smite my heart with the beauty of who He is. I want to be so full of wonder and awe for my Maker and His beauty, so focused on Him and His desires, that the pain of the here and now will become inconsequential because I deep down know, even now, that I am hidden in Christ and nothing can take Him away from me.
