My daughter Sally was reading “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” to her young daughters. They realized someone was going to have to die to set Edmund free from the White Witch.
Who would it be?
They made several guesses.
I hope it isn’t Mr Tumnus!
Or Mr. Beaver!
They never even imagined it would be Aslan.
But when it turned out to be, Sadie cried out in shock:
“NO! NO! NO! NOT ASLAN! NOT HIM!”
(Sally and Sadie)
Sadie had fallen in love with him. The thought of him dying was too terrible.
Yet it could only be him, the one without sin.
So, in love, he turned toward the storm, setting his face like flint to set us free.

Highlight from Last Week:
Great interaction on overcoming contempt. Jennifer’s testimony was so practical for us all:
The Lord showed me that when I pray for someone it teaches me to love them and not have contempt for them. I had a lot of bad feelings for my son in law but I started praying for him as the longer I did the more I loved him. I am so grateful.
Diane and Renee set up a facebook page for prayer and news for women on this blog. Lizzy has been keeping us updated on our own Mary who has 4th stage cancer. You can read it here and pray for her:https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=dee%27s%20bible%20study%20friends&epa=SEARCH_BOX
Also on Facebook, ur own Nila and daughters singing, in beautiful harmony, “Let’s Go Down To the River and Pray” — thought you non-facebook users might like to see it – I hope you can!

1. What stands out to you from the above and why? O, Nila and her daughters for sure!! I have always said singing with others is a taste of heaven as that is what we will be doing for eternity (says Revelation)… singing praise to Him with our brothers and sisters. I know there will be instruments in heaven but somehow a cappella singing transcends the soul even more (for me). I sang with you, Nila! It was beautiful, not only the sound but the hearts, too.
Also Sadie’s love for Aslan is endearing and beautiful. It inspires me to remember and embrace true childlike faith AND adoration for the Almighty.
2. How has our intimate God met you recently? I got called into an emergency late at night this week and the outcome was good, He definitely paved the way for me to be able to do my part well… it was a specific situation that I have been concerned about encountering because I have not had much experience with it but God gave me memory and hearing and a new life was saved.
What wonderful encouragement and praise from Jill to begin our week!
Sunday
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
Your grandchild’s response to the book. When my kids were young they watched The Witch, the Lion and the Wardrobe on video tape, VHS!! I know, shows my age! I remember how much they loved that movie and I think they kept watching it over and over hoping that Aslan wouldn’t be the one to die and each time it just devastated them. I also think that each time they watched it they gained a better understanding of what Jesus did for them…thank you C.S. Lewis!
The song by Nila and daughters was beautiful!
2. How has our intimate God met you recently?
It was such a blessing to be back in church this morning even though attendance was sparse. To be in the midst of believers while singing and just feeling the presence of the Holy Spirit…what joy!!
Glad you are back to worshipping together, Sharon!
Sharon, are you Florida? I’m so jealous that you got to go back to church! We really need to get things up and running again responsibly; it’s time.
No, we’re in N.C. on the coast. The pastor had the chairs arranged in sets of two and three separated throughout the sanctuary…very wise. Our pastors’s wife is a nurse so I know things will be done well!
👍
Our church is opening back up on the 7th but I think if I remember you will need to reserve a spot. I’m not sure we will be going back just yet with my husband being a higher risk. I will see what is said and how it all falls before we decide to go back.
What stands out to me is the response of Sally’s daughters to Aslan, oh no , not him…Sadie had fallen in love with him. Yes, I love the sweetness of children to our Savior.
I am hurting for Mary, yet blessed by her readiness for what is to come. Her love for Jesus is so pure through this season of trial.
I also love Nila and her daughters’ singing this lovely song.
2. How has our intimate God met you recently? He has led me back to my work of Scripture memory of Psalm 8. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth… and verse 2 also tells of “out of the mouth of babes and infants you have ordained strength…” As spring has pushed all nature into blossom I am just marveling at God’s creation, starting with our most precious little ones. Love to sing the song, and would love to share a rendition of it by a childrens’ choir, but just don’t know how to put it in here! An Asian group of young people sing it spiritedly on youtube.
Can you put in on our facebook page? I’m not sure how to help you –but that’s one idea.
Shirley, can you give the specific titles that are on Youtube…so many renditions!
It is How Majestic is Your Name- Michael W. Smith Oct. 26, 2008 philippians 1824, An Asian childrens’ choir singing
I hope this is the one…love this song!

3. Read Daniel 7:13-14 and describe Daniel’s vision.
One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds, approached the Ancient One and was led into His presence. He (Son of Man) was given honor, authority, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race, nation and language would obey Him. His rule will be eternal – never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.
4. Read Mark 14:53-65
A. Read it aloud, to see more, and share anything that stands out to you. What is it and why do you think it stands out?
Two things stood out to me…
1). They were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put Him to death. Brought in false witnesses with inconsistent testimonies.
2) When Jesus said in response to asking Him if He was the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One, “I AM. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at Gods right hand and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
It seems that Jesus is testifying against Himself and He’s loosing, but in reality He will be their ultimate judge just as prophesied in Daniel and according to what Jesus tells them. It’s all in accordance to Gods plan.
B. What makes someone willing to testify falsely, do you think?
They want so badly to steer the evidence to go in the direction they desire.
C. How did Jesus respond to the question “Are you the Christ?”
IAM; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming with the clouds of heaven.
D. He has been asked this before and not answered. Why now, do you think?
I don’t see that the specific question “Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One’ was asked before, so maybe Jesus was waiting for it to be asked?
E. How do the listeners respond?
The high priest tore his clothes to show his horror and said “why do we need other witnesses?”
Monday
6. Read Mark 15:1-5.
A. What question of Pilate’s does Jesus answer, and how?
Pilot asks Jesus if He is the king of the Jews and Jesus says, “You have said it.”
B. What questions does He not answer? Why, do you think?
He doesn’t answer all the charges that the leading priests are accusing Him of.
I think because they are false accusations and He knows it’s His time.
7. Read Mark 15:6-15
A. How does Pilate try to get out of crucifying Jesus?
During the Passover celebration it was the custom to release one prisoner, so Pilot asks if they want him to release Jesus.
B. When that plan fails, why does Pilate go ahead?
He realizes that the leading priests arrested Jesus out of envy and also to pacify the crowd who were yelling, “crucify Him!”
C. How can the idol of the approval of man be very dangerous to you?
The idol of approval draws me away from the Lord and causes me to trust in man rather than Him. It’s a daily struggle as I see it being so important to me to have certain people’s approval and yet I know Gods approval is all I need.
A common struggle!
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
I’m not sure I have ever actually read all of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I remember reading it to my kids a very long time ago but I don’t really remember all of it. Our oldest son named our kitty “Aslan” years ago. He did look like a lion.
Praying for Mary 😢.
Love, love, love the posting of Nila and her daughters. So good. Thanks Nila!
2. How has our intimate God met you recently?
I have enjoyed our warmer weather of late. Finally some sunshine! I spend a lot of time outside now and although I am extremely busy trying to manage everything, there is calm in the midst.
This morning, I have a “chore” of sorts that I do not want to do. As I opened the daily prayer for the UNITE714 campaign, the very first scripture reading was directed at me and the chore that I face. Pretty sure He was giving me encouragement with that!
3. Read Daniel 7:13-14 and describe Daniel’s vision.
It seems reminiscent of the vision John sees in Revelation. Daniel sees a man, the Son, coming “with the clouds.” He approaches the “ancient one” and is accepted. He is given authority over all nations. His rule is for eternity and will never end.
4. Read Mark 14:53-65
A. Read it aloud, to see more, and share anything that stands out to you. What is it and why do you think it stands out?
I think the high priest tearing his robe, “in horror…” stands out to me. I can’t imagine this type of thing happening in this day and age. Sure people my not believe Jesus, but they wouldn’t tear their clothes. I realize this was a Jewish custom when people were distraught and wanted to pray so that they felt God was listening, but it seems a bit harsh for the situation. He says that Jesus is talking blasphemy. That is different than say Job, who was distraught because his life was falling apart. Jesus isn’t doing anything to this man; the man isn’t really personally affected by Jesus’ behavior. I guess I would need to understand the tearing of the clothes law better and then I might understand this situation more.
B. What makes someone willing to testify falsely, do you think?
I think someone would lie because they are afraid for their life.
C. How did Jesus respond to the question “Are you the Christ?”
Jesus answers that indeed He is the Son.
D. He has been asked this before and not answered. Why now, do you think?
I’m not sure why now He divulges this information, other than He knew it was time and it was important that everyone knew the truth so in the end they would then believe?
E. How do the listeners respond?
The others agree that He is blaspheming the Lord and the shout that He should die.
Always love your questions, Laura — one way we get closer to God. And always eager to see how people will respond. What do you all know about the custom of tearing their clothes?
Laura and Dee, It’s been a while but i think they tear their robes for blasphemy and mourning, but their most likely is more to it.
Pondering what was said above that their robes were thick. That must’ve taken a lot of anger to rip it. I wonder if they place a lot of significance in their types of robes-maybe identity?
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
Loved your little granddaughter’s response with her mama over Aslan’s death. Oh the sensitive, perceptive heart of a child. No wonder Jesus loves them so. There are times that I think they must sense His presence in ways that us adults become too busy and distracted to notice. In an old book by Dale Evans Rogers (Roy Rogers’ wife) she describes how their down syndrome baby would see things that her parents couldn’t see. Before our baby girl died at 14 months, I believe she knew the presence of the Lord. One of her attending nurses who was a new believer told us that she thought that our little girl knew more about God than she did.
My daughters and I have sung together since they were tiny, before they could even read. Probably because I was raised by a mama who sang through the days and nights. The recording that Dee shared here happened late one night two weeks ago after we got all the kids to bed. I love how the Lord adjusts our hearts when we sing. We actually did a lot of laughing that night too….. between songs and sometimes during an attempted recording when one of us messed up.
Been thinking of Mary as her time here is short. With Mary in mind, I will post a song of hope on the face book prayer page this morning that my girls and I did that night.
I saw that and loved “I’ll fly away!”
Sunday:
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
I am so like Sadie. I don’t like stories where somebody dies. Especially a good man. I have yet to see the crucifixion of Jesus depicted in a movie where I have not closed my eyes. I just can’t look. Whenever I think of Jesus dying on the cross, I cannot help but cry. And imagining the magnitude of His suffering for me always brings me to a deep sense of gratitude. And perhaps if I were to experience a joyful life even while here on earth, I need to be reminded often of what Jesus has done for me because I think a grateful life is a joyful life.
And the three testimonies of prayer from Jennifer, Lizzy of Mary and Nila are great examples of the power of submissive prayer and what transformation our hearts can have because of it.
2. How has our intimate God met you recently?
Today marks my Mom’s 1 month death anniversary. Awhile back, I have set my alarm for 4:07 (her birthday is April 7) pm as a prompt to think of and pray for her. After her passing, I have kept that time in my daily alarm settings. These days, I would pause and say a prayer of thanksgiving for her life. Most days tears would flow but God brought comfort though by the reminder that Mom is in a happy place and is with our Lord.
Praying for you to sense His comfort, Bing.
Oh Bing, how hard that must be for you, but to know that where she is brings peace to you is wonderful. I love setting the alarm to pray and praise Him for her life.
I like how you’re keeping your alarm set for the date of her birthday, Bing. I’m sure you miss your mom a lot. Hugs❤️
3. Read Daniel 7:13-14 and describe Daniel’s vision. someone comes before God in the clouds of heaven. He is given a kingdom, glory, and dominion. All people’s of all kids will serve him. This kingdom will last forever and nothing can destroy it.
4. Read Mark 14:53-65
A. Read it out loud, to see more, and share anything that stands out to you. What is it and why do you think it stands out? That even though the leaders were engaging in wrongfully accusing Jesus and trying to get rid of Him they concerned themselves with having testimonies that “agreed.” The guards received Jesus with blows, but Peter had been sitting with the guards by the fire… did Peter watch? Did he make eye contact with Jesus? Did he protest?
B. What makes someone willing to testify falsely, do you think? Any of one’s idols might open the gate for falsely testifying … I have also become aware that many people don’t know they are falsely testifying because they truly believe the interpretation of the circumstances! People get upset incorrectly recall words spoken or misread intentions causing them to misinterpret actions…. some flat out lie because they are afraid but many more (I think) allow themselves to believe how their idols suggest they should, they filter through selfishness of their own heart.
C. How did Jesus respond to the question “Are you the Christ?” He affirmed their accusation.
D. He has been asked this before and not answered. Why now, do you think? I am not certain but I am thinking 1. To have the prophecies fulfilled and 2. So there would be no confusion later he stated it plainly.
E. How do the listeners respond? The leaders tore their clothing. From what I understand this was a lot of clothes! If they had fully dressed for trial… to claim He was the Messiah AND divine was the ultimate horror of sac religion for the Jews. For a Jew to even write the name of God was a ritual of washing, writing, and washing again … think of how they would have seen such a claim to BE God. It was extreme.
6. Read Mark 15:1-5
A. What question of Pilate’s does Jesus answer, and how? Jesus answers the question of whether or not He is the King of the Jews. He answers by saying that Pilate has said it.
Question: Is this the first time Jesus is called the King of the Jews? Is this a term coined by the Romans observing the events? Is this an accusation from the chief priests taken from “Messiah”… did they use the term Messiah or Christ and carry it forward to King? I looked at different translations and they all use “King.” Why did Pilate call Him this?
B. What questions does He not answer? Why, do you think? He does not answer the accusations from the Jewish leaders. I think He does not answer because there is no reason or purpose in doing so. He will not argue His way to innocence, the time would not have been fulfilled if He did. There is also no purpose in answering them because He has said all He needs to say for the good of those that would seek Him.
7. Read Mark 15:6-15
A. How does Pilate try to get out of crucifying Jesus? He tries to compare Him with the worst prisoner there is in order to release Jesus. He also challenges the crowd’s assertion that He deserves death.
B. When that plan fails, why does Pilate go ahead? He is afraid of the crowd.
C. How can the idol of the approval of man be very dangerous to you? It can dictate your actions powerfully and lead you to forget what is TRUE. Our actions reflect our deepest beliefs … if I let myself believe in my heart that the approval of man is weightier than the Almighty arms that hold me I believe lies and will act as such. If I cling to the belief that I am already accepted fully then I will obey in confidence in the the arms that hold me.
This was an interesting observation from Jill:
The leaders tore their clothing. From what I understand this was a lot of clothes!
Sunday:
What stands out to you from the above and why?
Sadies sweet emotion over Aslan- what a gift, her heart befog sensitive to the things of the Lord so early on.
And OH, Nila…your sweet harmony with your daughters! Having given birth only to boys and not having a singing voice that I am pleased with, I so appreciate your blessing of daughters and song, it made me weepy!
How has our intimate God met you recently?
We had an idea late last week of going over the Memorial weekend to visit our dearest friends who moved to Philadelphia 5 years ago. On the way home formwork Thursday I was having serious second thoughts, I have been under some stress starting back to work and having a long quiet weekend at home seemed wise. But Bill had already asked and they had said yes, so I prayed about it and felt that I should prize relationship over being less busy, so we went. I prayed for it to be a sweet time of reconnection and God was pleased to make it so. I am so glad we went!
We love to play Pictionary together boys against the girls. My friend and I are so tuned in to one another, one time years ago she only made one line and I guessed the word, this weekend I made a most awful drawing of the United States and made a wee dot on the east coast, her first guess (which was correct) was Connecticut! We laughed so hard and the boys complained heartily…it was so much fun:~)
Another relational praise from the weekend, we got into a discussion about making and spending money, we had differences of opinion on what is most honoring to God, my husband Bill agreed with ME. This felt monumental to me. I am so grateful.
That’s a really fun story about relational women winning over the guys in Pictionary!
6. Read Mark 15:1-5.
A. What question of Pilate’s does Jesus answer, and how?
Pilate asks if Jesus is the king of the Jews. Jesus says, “you have said that” not really owning it which I think is strange.
B. What questions does He not answer? Why, do you think?
Jesus does not answer questions about the specific charges against Him.
Perhaps He doesn’t answer because He wants the process of His crucifixion to continue. By Him engaging in an argument it just prolongs the inevitable?
7. Read Mark 15:6-15
A. How does Pilate try to get out of crucifying Jesus?
Pilate offers to release a prisoner as is custom each year. He gives the choice of Jesus or Barabbas.
B. When that plan fails, why does Pilate go ahead?
He is badgered so much by the mob of people that he gives in. I think Pilate fears the crowd.
C. How can the idol of the approval of man be very dangerous to you?
Wow, this question hurts. I have allowed this to happen to myself over the course of this quarantine. It has been so easy to get wrapped up in my own thinking; worry about what others are doing and how I compare. Ugh. Man can never give you what you want. Man will always disappoint.
I am not sure that anyone here who is not a member of our Facebook group can read Mary’s update as our FB group is a closed group, not public. But if someone wants to join the group just send me a private message via email at datrails@gmail.com and I will add you. We are there mostly for prayer requests but a few other personal posts as well.
Thank you, Diane. So glad you are managing this!
Daniel 7:13-14 The vision: Daniel saw one, like the Son of Man, coming in the clouds. He came to the Ancient of Days and he was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, for all peoples from all nations to serve him.
4. Mark 14:53-65
A, What stands out? I always think of Peter, who followed Jesus at a distance, then when he was in the courtyard of the High Priest. He sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire. Wondering what was in his mind at this time.
B. What makes someone testify falsely? It seems that their motives are often totally selfish, and they are willing to tell untruths to make themselves look good.
C. Jesus’ response, “Are you the Christ?” First Jesus kept silent. See how many things they testify against you, but he answered nothing.
D. Then Jesus did answer, verse 62, I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.
Mark 15:1-5
6. A. What questions of Pilates’ does Jesus answer? He says, to the question of are you the king of the Jews?, he said, It is as you say.
B. The questions he does not answer: The chief priests accusations, then Pilate says, Do you answer nothing?
I think Jesus does not answer because he knows all they are testifying are false.
Monday
8. Read the opening 5 pages in Chapter 17 in Keller’s book, ending after Mark 15:11-15. Share your notes and comments.
The following stood out to me in giving more understanding…
All the ruling council of the Sanhedrin knew who the “Son of Man” is. Jesus was specifically saying He is the judge and they knew it! “He is the the judge over the entire world , being judged by the world.” Wow!
The high priest ripping his garment apart was “a sign of the greatest possible outrage, horror, and grief!”
1. Read Daniel 7:13-14 and describe Daniel’s vision.
He saw the son of man coming with the clouds and approaching the Ancient of Days.
4. Read Mark 14:53-65
A. Read it aloud, to see more, and share anything that stands out to you. What is it and why do you think it stands out?
Jesus remained silent at first with the false accusations of the chief priests and the Sanhedrin. I believe Jesus was silent because He knew they knew the accusations were all false.
The High Priest, supposedly the most respected one was the one who asked if Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus is truth and therefore cannot lie. So He replied that He is the Messiah. He stood as a witness for Himself.
I think all of Jesus’ accusers were not interested in the truth; they just want Jesus killed. Jesus was a threat to their pride and all they stood for and they are not going to let that happen.
B. What makes someone willing to testify falsely, do you think?
Pride
C. How did Jesus respond to the question “Are you the Christ?”
He replied, Yes, and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Father and coming with the clouds
D. He has been asked this before and not answered. Why now, do you think?
For the fulfillment of Scriptures and He knew it was His time.
E. How do the listeners respond?
The high priest tore his clothes and accused Him of blasphemy. Then they all condemned Him worthy of death-blindfolded him, spat at him, struck Him with their fists.
6. Read Mark 15:1-5.
A. What question of Pilate’s does Jesus answer, and how?
“Are you the king of the Jews?” and Jesus answered, “you have said so.”
B. What questions does He not answer? Why, do you think?
Pilate asking Jesus to reply to the many accusations of the priests. He knew they were all false.
7. Read Mark 15:6-15
A. How does Pilate try to get out of crucifying Jesus?
He asked the people’s vote on whether to release Jesus, the king of the Jews.
B. When that plan fails, why does Pilate go ahead?
He turned Jesus over to be flogged and crucified because He wanted to satisfy the crowd.
C. How can the idol of the approval of man be very dangerous to you?
Self and others become Lord of my life and I go back to righteousness by works. Then my works will never be enough and I will just be spinning my wheel which can lead to exhaustion, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
Thank you. Great post. Part C is something the Lord has been slowly revealing to me over the last few years. Especially in my marriage. Wanting the approval of my spouse has led to many conflicts. Curious how our faulty minds work. Thinking we can avoid conflict when really conflict is necessary to avoid/correct sin.
Chris, my husband, and I are seeing a counselor, trying to untangle the same sort of behaviors you describe. He is encouraging us both to draw nearer to the Lord. That we will be strengthened in our marriage as a result. Our homework after the last session is to write an identity statement. Which is hard for me!
Tuesday
9. Read Mark 15:20-24
A. Why do you think Mark mentions that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus?
I have no idea so did some research. Mark probably mentions them because they are known to his readers and therefore eye witnesses to what took place with their father. I’m reasoning through this that maybe if Simon, their father passed, the story could be verified through his sons.
The other thing I found is that Rufus could of been the same Rufus in Romans 16:13, “Greet Rufus, whom the Lord picked out to be His very own; and also his dear mother; who has been a mother to me.” So maybe he was a leader in the early church and his father Simon really knew what it meant “to take up his cross and follow Jesus.”
Great research and good answers, Sharon!
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
Sally’s painting and Nila’s beautiful song! I have this painting displayed on my wall and this morning on the blog God met me with it’s meaning: So, in love, he turned toward the storm, setting his face like flint to set us free. I have always looked at it wondering what Sally was communicating. I knew the Lion was Jesus and saw Him alone moving toward the wind that was blowing hard against Him but didn’t put it together until now.
As you know I am in the biggest trial of my life so far and in pain as I write this. Yet I want to share with you how He is meeting me. Whoa am I experiencing Galatians 2:20 in a deeper way but it is HIM in me helping me to live by faith in the Lover of my soul who loved me and gave Himself up for me! I have days that I fall to anger, or worry, or desire for revenge, or a desire to just fall into depression and escape. I often cry out-help! Oh, He is giving me this unnatural self control-I can’t explain it for my flesh desires to lash out and just leave to punish this person that wounded me. Yet He is giving me this calm and self control I can’t explain. I am amazed at the courage He is giving me as He frees me from relational idolatry..it is truly amazing-it is Him, not me and I want to tell the world. My sister in law said that she knows God is going to be glorified in this for He already is in her life-for she has been encouraged. She knows this is not me but Him..It’s all HIM. 🙂 🙂 🙂
So I come to the blog and He tells me this-He is turning toward my storm setting his face like flint and IS setting me free …Yes He is..and He is also guarding me from the foxes that would come in to destroy the fruit God is tending in my life through this.
I absolutely love Nila’s song -gave me goosebumps. So sweet to see you worship as a family, and wow how your voices blend so well. I had the privilege of listening yesterday on her facebook page!
Oh Rebecca, what a gift from the Lord to open your eyes to that connection with the painting…gave me goosebumps! Keeping you in my prayers.
Sharon,
I would love to meet you in person! 🙂 You have such a kind, sweet heart so like Him.

B. Why do you think Jesus refused the wine mixed with myrrh?
Before reading this article I always thought it was done in meanness, an addition to the suffering. I’m so glad you posted this Dee, as it deepens for me what Christ endured on the cross…”Jesus would take no shortcuts on the way to our redemption.”
C. What prophecies were fulfilled by the above? (See Keller)
Keller says that Mark was probably thinking of Psalm 22
Verse 1, “My God, God, why have you abandoned Me.”
Verse 7, “Everyone who sees me mocks me.”
Verse 14, “My life is poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting me.”
Verse 15, “My strength has dried up like sun baked clay. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth…”
Verse 16, “My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet.”Verse 17, “ I count all my bones, My enemies stare at me and gloat.“
Verse 18, “They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing.”
10. Read Mark 15:25-34 and share what stands out to you and why.
All of the prophecy that was fulfilled. I wonder how Mark must of felt when writing this how exactly it lined up?
Thanks, Sharon — it does add to our appreciation to what He did for us!
9. Read Mark 15:20-2
A. Why do you think Mark mentions that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus?
I didn’t know how to respond to this question. I found a response to it from John Piper that is thought provoking and now I have more questions. Pastor Piper makes some very thoughtful suggestions about this. He summarizes with this:
1. Simon was a real historical person, and he was there at a real historical moment.
2. He was a foreigner, an African, who served Jesus in his final hour.
3. Carrying the cross behind Jesus is a beautiful and painful picture of our calling as disciples, according to Luke 9. Whether Luke intended us to see that or not, it’s true.
4. The call to suffer for Jesus is often sudden and costly and seemingly random.
5. Simon’s help proved to be both a relief temporarily, but also added suffering because it sustained Jesus to get to the cross and have the horrible experience of crucifixion for us.
6. We know that when Jesus cried out to his heavenly Father in Gethsemane, he was given help. He needed help so that his obedience would not falter. God answered his prayers. These were the hardest hours of Jesus’s life.

Thanks for these statements from Piper, Nila. It helps me.
Nila, thank you for this link. I speculated when I answered this question. I was touched with Piper’s comments especially #4: “The call to suffer for Jesus is often sudden and costly and seemingly random.”
That’s good, Nila. I too like what Keller says is naming them helped show the reliability of Scripture for they could be questioned about the accuracy of the account.
7. Pilate tried to get out of crucifying Jesus by asking them, “Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?”
B. When that plan fails, why does Pilate go ahead? He wants to appease the crowd.
C. The idol of approval can be very dangerous to you because it may cause you to do things that are not God’s will, and rather can be harmful to yourself or others, maybe immoral or illegal. For God’s way is the narrow road…
Chapter 17, Opening of The End: The high Priest puts Jesus on the witness stand, and now Jesus answers the question, “Are you the Christ?” Now Jesus answers, “I am”, and is making the statement, identifying himself to be the Son of Man, claiming to be divine!
The Jews did not expect the Messiah to be literally divine, and now he is claiming to be the Son of Man, from Daniel 7, meaning to be the judge of the world, to be deity. Instead of being in the judgment seat, Jesus is claiming to be the judge, turning everything upside down!
Now the High Priest tears his clothes, a sign of outrage, terror and grief. Now Jesus is convicted of blasphemy, but the Sanhedrin did not have the power to pass the death sentence. Therefore he is handed over to Pilate who had no desire to try the case. So Pilate tries to find a way out. He seeks the approval of the crowd, but they shout, Crucify him! They did want Barabbas, a violent man to be released.
1. That’s so sweet how the girls fell in love with Aslan….”No, not Aslan!” Oh that our hearts would be so grieved that Jesus had to die for us, grieved because of how much we love Him.
2. God has been with me through these hard days since my dad’s death. And I have a treasure to hold onto, the Bible I had given him, in which he wrote the date that “I, Virgil Lisle, accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.” I treasure those words because I mourn but not without hope.
I’m having hard time getting to the blog lately. My husband is working from home and so has taken over the home office where the computer is. I’m on my phone now and it’s hard to type on it! And I have peace in this crazy time; also in the midst of a kitchen renovation that was put on hold due to Covid 19. I am a perfectionist in my home and have written notes to myself so I can remember where I’ve put things. Yesterday was a hard day for me as I took flowers for my parents, grandparents and aunt and uncle. My sons are far away and my daughter is in Florida with my in-laws.
Oh Susan, what a blessing to have your Dad’s Bible. Hugs to you as you are going through so much.
That is a wonderful treasure to have the Bible your Dad wrote in when he accepted Jesus as Savior. A true blessing, Susan.
Susan, what a gift to have your Dad’s Bible and to have written evidence of his relationship with Jesus Christ.
Sunday:
1. What stands out to you from the above and why? – The sadness in your granddaughters voice, I can just imagine how hard that was to see. Also Nila and her daughters, just beautiful. Thank you for doing that for all of us to enjoy. The update on Mary is so heartwarming and at the same time so hard to think of all she is going through. We are not the ones to decide on when her time is up, but it’s hard not to question God. I don’t know His will for her but I continue to pray for her healing and comfort. I’m not aware of the new Facebook page for prayer, but what a great idea. I do prayer for all the ladies and their families on this blog. I love coming on to the blog and was upset over the weekend that I could not connect at the hotel. It was a bummer for me.
2. How has our intimate God met you recently? – My husband and I were in NE Tennessee this weekend and oh the beauty of the area. It is only God that can create such majesty. We visited a church we were interested in and due to Covid the service was held outside in the parking lot and the background was the beautiful Bays Mountain. It couldn’t get any better. We saw so much of God’s beauty this weekend all around us. Thank you Lord for creating such a beautiful place.
Love Tennessee! So beautiful…another church opened. I can’t wait for ours to be back in the game too 😇.
Julie and others, if you would like to be part of the Facebook prayer page, send me a private email at datrails@gmail.com.
thank you Diane, I sent the email to you.
Monday: Are You The Christ, The Son of the Blessed One?
“I Am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of The Mighty One and coming in the clouds of heaven.” (Mark 14:62)
3. Read Daniel 7:13-14 and describe Daniel’s vision. – Daniel said he saw one like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power. Everyone worshipped him. This sounds like he is describing Jesus coming but at that point in time, I’m thinking he didn’t really know what the vision meant. He just saw glory, power and authority.
4. Read Mark 14:53-65
A. Read it aloud, to see more, and share anything that stands out to you. What is it and why do you think it stands out? – I know Peter denied Jesus but I never realized he was sitting at the fire with the guards who may have been the same guards to guided Jesus back. I also see that they arrested him and still did not have any evidence against him. I feel that they were just stalling at this point to find something at the last minute. Peter sitting with the guards stands out to me because of how much he loved Jesus and told him that he would never deny him. But to sit at the fire with the guards when the one you love so deeply is being falsely accused. It appears that he became friendly with them.
B. What makes someone willing to testify falsely, do you think? – I think they do this because they are afraid of the consequences if they go against what the majority are saying. They don’t want to stand out among the crowd with a different opinion or a different outlook on the situation. They want to feel like they are part of the crowd. Those that are being liked at that moment.
C. How did Jesus respond to the question “Are you the Christ?” – Jesus replied “I am and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.
D. He has been asked this before and not answered. Why now, do you think? – The side note in my Bible says that when he was pressured and charged under oath to repeat what he had claimed throughout his ministry. He would not be one to lie, and I think too that the time was now the time to face what he was born to face.
E. How do the listeners respond? – The high priest tore his clothes and asked why they needed more witnesses. Others spit on him, blindfolded him and hit him with their fists and yelled for him to prophesy. The guards then took him and beat him. I wonder that though he was blindfolded, I’m guessing he still knew who was doing those awful things to him. How those that spit at him and beat him would most likely not enter the Kingdom of Heaven and they had no clue what was to come of their lives.
3. Read Daniel 7:13-14 and describe Daniel’s vision.
A son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
4. Read Mark 14:53-65
A. Read it aloud, to see more, and share anything that stands out to you. What is it and why do you think it stands out?
1. That they testified falsely against Jesus mis-interpreting when Jesus said He was going to tear down the temple and in 3 days build it back up. None of their testimonies matched with one another.
2. Jesus was silent in the face of accusations. The prophecy in Isaiah states that He would be silent and led like a Lamb to slaughter.
B. What makes someone willing to testify falsely, do you think?
They are fear what it will cost them to testify truthfully.
C. How did Jesus respond to the question “Are you the Christ?”
“I Am,” “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
D. He has been asked this before and not answered. Why now, do you think?
It is time.
E. How do the listeners respond?
The Chief Priest tore his robe (blasphemy) and Jesus was spat on.
6. Read Mark 15:1-5.
A. What question of Pilate’s does Jesus answer, and how?
Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus replied, “You have said so”.
B. What questions does He not answer? Why, do you think?
If he was going to answer the accusations they were making against Him. I think that might have been a time He could have been pardoned had he answered-maybe, but I think the joy set before Him of rescuing us to Himself and the passion of His pursuit of us trumped defending Himself. He came to give His life to defend us before God on the cross-to take on our sin, our judgment.
7. Read Mark 15:6-15
A. How does Pilate try to get out of crucifying Jesus?
by re-stating that Jesus hasn’t committed a crime.
B. When that plan fails, why does Pilate go ahead?
He wanted to satisfy the crowd
C. How can the idol of the approval of man be very dangerous to you?
It is dangerous because it puts a block in the way of intimacy between God and me. It can make me think it will satisfy a need but instead lead down all sorts of dangerous paths that end up eating me alive.
3. Read Daniel 7:13-14 and describe Daniel’s vision.
It was night but Daniel could see the heavens, he could see someone” like a son of man” coming with, not on, the clouds. He went towards God the Father and was led into His presence, where we cannot go without his help. He was GIVEN authority, glory & power. People of every culture and language worshiped him, his kingdom will last forever.
I 4. Read Mark 14:53-65
A. Read it aloud, to see more, and share anything that stands out to you. What is it and why do you think it stands out?It stood out to me that ALL the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. They disagreed yet they were all there, even the one who did eventually put faith in Jesus.
“They all condemned him as worthy of death” stood out to me.
The violence done to Christ stood out to me. He took my place. I agree with Bing’s comments about the depictions of the crucifixion, I have to look away too. I remember feeling incredulous when I saw The Passion of the Christ at the theater that people were eating popcorn while watching. I haven’t been able to watch that movie again.
B. What makes someone willing to testify falsely, do you think?
Fear perhaps might make someone lie, for some of these men maybe the approval of the religious leaders? Some people seem to like to be angry about something and get caught up in the emotion of a mob.
C. How did Jesus respond to the question “Are you the Christ?” With an I AM statement
D. He has been asked this before and not answered. Why now, do you think?
I am not sure why he chooses now
E. How do the listeners respond?
They are enraged. It makes me think of the crowd that went berserk in Luke 4 and wanted to throw Jesus off a cliff and of the crowd that stoned Stephen.
6. Read Mark 15:1-5.
A. What question of Pilate’s does Jesus answer, and how?
Jesus answered with Pilate’s own statement
B. What questions does He not answer? Why, do you think?
He didn’t answer their accusations, maybe because most were true? He was claiming to be God, they counted this as blasphemy, but it was in fact the truth.
7. Read Mark 15:6-15
A. How does Pilate try to get out of crucifying Jesus?
By offering to release a prisoner as was the custom.
B. When that plan fails, why does Pilate go ahead?
I guess he could see no way around the situation but to give in- he wanted to “please the crowd” UGH!
C. How can the idol of the approval of man be very dangerous to you?
I can be so caught up in the concern of what other people think of me that I make their opinions what rules my behavior at the moment. I can be tempted to lie so that people think better of me than I deserve. I can be tempted to step on or snub people I deem lesser to gain the approval of those I deem superior.
9. Read Mark 15:20-24
A. Why do you think Mark mentions that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus?
I think that the early Christians knew Alexander and Rufus. They probably were Christ followers as a result of Simon’s encounter with Jesus.
B. Why do you think Jesus refused the wine mixed with myrrh?
The following article will help with the above question: https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/the-wine-jesus-drank
(This touched me so. My husband refused morphine during his last painful hours, but I gave it to him intravenously despite his wishes, hating his suffering — now — I wonder if that was wrong. Yet, even that, I cast at the feet of Jesus, and know He forgives.)
Jesus chose “to endure with full consciousness the sufferings appointed for him”, according to the above article by David Mathis. I tend to agree, seeing no other explanation.
Dee, I am wondering what reason your husband gave for not wanting morphine. My mom was on heavy morphine before she passed away. Besides taking away pain, it does take away consciousness of others and makes one sleep a lot.
C. What prophecies were fulfilled by the above? (See Keller)
Here Jesus fulfilled many prophecies of Psalm 22.
10. Read Mark 15:25-34 and share what stands out to you and why.
What stands out is the mocking. He was “reviled”. If you can “rebuild the temple” as you said, “save yourself from the cross.” “Come down from the cross and we will believe.” We have copies of the DVD, “The Passion” that portrays Jesus’ crucifixion, I wanted to watch it again this year, but could not force myself to watch it. It is so gruesome and sad. It is realistic, I think, and I do not like to think about that kind of cruelty and mocking. The depths of evil are very hard to look at and think about, yet Jesus bore it all.
11. Read in Keller’s book from After Mark 15:11-15 up to Darkness and Disintegration and share your notes and comments.
The interplay of light and darkness are important. The darkness represents evil – the night time trial, the crucifixion. For the Jews, daytime darkness represents God’s judgment and displeasure.
Jesus crying “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” is calling God intimately and Jesus is painfully aware of being cut off from his Father who he loved intimately from all eternity. He did this for us, so that we didn’t have to be cut off from him, if we believe in him.
I don’t know, Diane, why Steve shook his head at the offer of morphine — I went along for a while but then couldn’t bear it.
9. Mark 15:20-24
A. Why do you think Mark mentions Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus? I would guess that this is to further identify Simon and differentiate him from Simon Peter.
B. Why did Jesus refuse the wine mixed with myrrh? This was given to dull his pain, but he wished to endure the full extent of the suffering mandated for him.
C. What prophecies were fulfilled by the above?Keller says Psalm 22 because of the choice of words.Verse 24: and they crucified him and divided his garments among them…Psalm 22:18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
10. Mark 15:25-34 what stands out? Two things stand out- the mocking, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.” The desperation he felt when he said, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” I think of how lonely and painful it must have been; these words express his desperate condition.
11. Chapter 17: All the critical events of Jesus’ death happened in the dark: the betrayal, the trial, and now darkness descends over the earth for 3 hours during the time of Jesus’ crucifixion. No natural cause can be given, though some have suggested an eclipse or a windstorm. Darkness during the day in the Bible is associated with God’s displeasure and judgment. Jesus was being judged for our sins.
He felt forsaken and cried out, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? He calls out the intimate name for his Father. My God is a covenantal address signifying a personal relationship. Jesus was not being judged, but was experiencing our judgment day. “For you, for me, for us. Jesus was forsaken by God so that we would never have to be.”
9. Read Mark 15:20-24
A. Why do you think Mark mentions that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus? I remember Keller saying that eyewitnesses were specified this way so that the story could be verified….it is likely that at the time Mark was written Alexander and Rufus were known to the audience otherwise they would have required more specificity.
B. Why do you think Jesus refused the wine mixed with myrrh? I already read the article. I wonder, too, if Christ, as a human, would have been susceptible to being dulled in mind. Had He taken the myrrh He may have been drugged enough to say something weird or to forget His purpose and the will of the Father … or to just pass out unaware …. and then die in His drugged sleep rather the important declaration to God and the giving up of His Spirit. I know these are some reasons people refuse pain meds at the end of life – they want to be aware and not say drugged things or forget what is happening.
9. Read Mark 15:20-24
A. Why do you think Mark mentions that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus?
Maybe to not confuse him with the disciple Simon Peter?
B. Why do you think Jesus refused the wine mixed with myrrh?
To feel the full brunt of the sin? Kind of like when you decide to not have any pain medicine when having a baby….I have had an epidural once, Demerol once, and nothing the last time. Definitely the last time was the best experience for me!
Interesting on your childbirth experiences, Laura!
A. Why do you think Mark mentions that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus?
I have listened to Keller enough to know that he and others believe that the random naming of people in the Scripture proves that there were eyewitnesses, that the first people who read this would have, or could have, known who Simon, Alexander, and Rufus were.
B. Why do you think Jesus refused the wine mixed with myrrh?
The following article will help with the above question:
https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/the-wine-jesus-drank
(This touched me so. My husband refused morphine during his last painful hours, but
I gave it to him intravenously despite his wishes, hating his suffering — now — I wonder if that was wrong. Yet, even that, I cast at the feet of Jesus, and know He forgives.)
I feel for you Dee in this end of life story about Steve… so much C. What prophecies were fulfilled by the above? (See Keller)
Those of Psalm 22
10. Read Mark 15:25-34 and share what stands out to you and why.
It stood out to me that everyone mocked and insulted Jesus, like you would imagine someone there having the impression of the injustice, of the wrong being done.
The sick feeling you get when you see someone being bullied, this is so far beyond that, it is amazing, that the creator of all would allow his creations to treat him this way in order to save them…amazing is too weak a word.
Yes — we both listen to Keller a lot! 🙂
9. Read Mark 15:20-24
A. Why do you think Mark mentions that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus?
I am not sure, but I did some digging and discovered Rufus is mentioned in Romans and he and his mom were believers-well known in the church. What I find fascinating is that The book of Romans was written by Paul after Jesus’ death and resurrection so maybe Simon encountered Jesus for the first time via helping to carry His cross-What significance! I assume Simon and his family became Christians after Jesus’ resurrection.
B. Why do you think Jesus refused the wine mixed with myrrh?
I read the article below. Wow..It was a pain relief agent when mixed with Myrrh and Jesus wanted to take on fully our redemption-no shortcuts-so He denied it. He said yes to the second offer of sour wine (not mixed with Myrrh) for that was made to keep one on the cross conscious-so He suffered for us fully-no shortcuts. Wow, what love is this. I am awestruck right now.
Dee-if you read this far, how you helped Steve in his last hours was by far the most loving, tender thing you could do.
Thank you, Rebecca. I know I’m forgiven if it was wrong and all is well now.
9. Read Mark 15:20-24
A. Why do you think Mark mentions that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus?
To make clear that this is not Peter? Or to emphasize the value of one person.
B. Why do you think Jesus refused the wine mixed with myrrh?
Myrrh will deaden the pain and Jesus wanted to fully experience the pain of His suffering. Dee, I would have done the same if he were my husband.
A. What prophecies were fulfilled by the above? (See Keller)
The prophecies in Psalm 22.
10. Read Mark 15:25-34 and share what stands out to you and why.
Jesus was crucified at 9 and darkness came to the land at three. 6 agonizing hours! There was not a shortcut to the death of my Savior. He fully felt the pain of suffering that was due to me. And most of all to be forsaken by the Father at His biggest moment of need.
I am learning here that when I encounter pain, I can choose to see pain as communion with Jesus like no other. He knows what it is to be in pain and understands.
11. Read in Keller’s book from After Mark 15:11-15 up to Darkness and Disintegration and share your notes and comments.
Mark did not go into the gory details of death by crucifixion but rather focused on the deeper meaning behind the events.
The disciples-I wonder how they were feeling at this time. Could I apply this same scenario with those I care about on their deathbed? Could I sympathize with loved ones’ pain as they watch their father or mother or child struggle in pain? And trust God in His sovereignty?
From noon-3, it was dark. How did the people watching Jesus dying feel about the darkness? Were there some whose eyes were opened to the truth at this very time? Aside from the centurion?
Darkness was God’s judgment and it fell on Jesus that day instead of for you and for me.
Bing, your answer to A…”so readers wouldn’t think it was Peter”…well of course, why didn’t I think of that 🤦🏻♀️!!! So simple!
Thanks, Bing. And good observation on “Simon.”
Wednesday: Darkness and Disintegration
12. Read this section in the chapter through Amos 8:7-8 and share your notes and comments.
Physical darkness causes physical disorientation and so does spiritual darkness. This happens when we turn away from God as our true light and make something else the center of our life.
If you center on anything other than God, you suffer a loss of identity.
Spiritual darkness leads invariably from disorientation to disintegration, of self, and of relationships with others. Being out of the presence of God means utter darkness and eternal disintegration!
From Isaiah and Amos came to the prophecy of another time of darkness and that day judgment will be on the people who do not belong to God.
So far behind this week…struggling to keep up!
C. What prophecies were fulfilled by the above? (See Keller)
Prophesies in Psalm 22:
They mock, hurl insults, are angry. His bones are out of joint. His heart has melted. They pieces His hands and feet. People stare and gloat. They divide His clothes and cast lots for them.
By the way, what is the difference between “garments” and “clothes?” I noticed they are both mentioned in the last bit of scripture Keller writes.
Chapter 17, though Amos 8: Where there is complete physical darkness, you may as well have no identity…for you have no direction and cannot see yourself. Keller says, “Spiritual darkness comes when we turn away from God and make something else the center of our life.”
The Bible is the source of all truth and life. And if you center on anything but God, you suffer a loss of identity. For your life is centered on human approval, on how well you perform. Keller personalizes this as well, if he bases his ministry on human approval and is criticized, he would become overcome with insecurity. His goals should not be more important to him than God’s love for him in Jesus!
Spiritual darkness(turning away from God) leads to disintegration. For we would seek to glorify ourselves rather than the goal of glorifying God. The Old Testament prophets warned of the Day of judgment. Being out of the presence of God means utter darkness. this Truth makes me understand why God hates pride above all sin, because it is what drives one with the idol of human approval.
10. Read Mark 15:25-34 and share what stands out to you and why.
Two things stand out to me… One, that the two “revolutionaries“ both mocked Him. I thought just one mocked Him and the other one asked him for forgiveness, if you will.
The second thing is that He asked God why he’s abandoned him. Again I go back to Jesus is God so wouldn’t Jesus know this already?
Laura, In Luke, one of the thieves repents and comes to faith in Christ, so he began by mocking him, but turned and was forgiven.
As to Jesus knowing that the Father would turn away, I think he knew, but knowing something and experiencing it are often quite different things.
I can intellectually know how difficult or conversely how delightful something will be, but actually experiencing it is another thing altogether. What Jesus felt in losing the Father’s presence and the sense of His love is beyond our comprehension I think.
6. Read Mark 15:1-5.
A. What question of Pilate’s does Jesus answer, and how? – Jesus answered “Yes, it is as you say” when Pilate asked him if he was the king of the Jews.
B. What questions does He not answer? Why, do you think? –Jesus doesn’t answer when Pilate said they were accusing him of many things. I’m not sure why he didn’t answer. Was it because he knew it wouldn’t matter what he said. Because this was the laid out plan of why he was born?
7. Read Mark 15:6-15
A. How does Pilate try to get out of crucifying Jesus? – he asked the crowd who they wanted him to hand over and when they said Jesus he asked them what crime he had committed.
B. When that plan fails, why does Pilate go ahead? – He wanted to please the crowd so he had Jesus flogged and handed over to be crucified as they requested.
C. How can the idol of the approval of man be very dangerous to you? – I think if we fall to this idol of man’s approval we will do things that please the majority but most likely will not be what pleases Jesus. We will do things we know we should not be doing just to feel like we are part of the ‘in crowd’
8. Read the opening 5 pages in Chapter 17 in Keller’s book, ending after Mark 15:11-15. Share your notes and comments. – So I’m confused on the part where it says that all the people in the room new who the Son of Man was, so why do they continue to try and say he is blaspheming when he says it.
Good question/obervation. As R. Zecharias often said, reasons for rejecting Christ are moral rather than intellectual.
Tuesday: Maker of the World Unmade
9. Read Mark 15:20-24
A. Why do you think Mark mentions that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus? – I think I missed something on these two. My Bible doesn’t even give me a reference to look them up to read on them. We found by googling them that it was more for a witness on the account that Simon, there father, was made to help Jesus carry the cross.
B. Why do you think Jesus refused the wine mixed with myrrh? – The side note in my Bible on this says that he wanted to fulfill the pain that was due on him by his Father.
The following article will help with the above question: – Thank you Dee for include this article.
https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/the-wine-jesus-drank
(This touched me so. My husband refused morphine during his last painful hours, but I gave it to him intravenously despite his wishes, hating his suffering — now — I wonder if that was wrong. Yet, even that, I cast at the feet of Jesus, and know He forgives.) – Oh Dee it is so hard to see those we love suffer. We also gave the morphine to my sister when she was dying as she looked like she was in so much pain. I believe it is just how we were created, to care for those we love in the way we know how.
C. What prophecies were fulfilled by the above? (See Keller) – The temple was destroyed so our sins could be forgiven and that we would be closer in our relationship with God.
10. Read Mark 15:25-34 and share what stands out to you and why. – I saw Laura’s question above about the two being crucified with Jesus both insulted him. I was wondering the same thing that one wanted Jesus to forgive him. And as I read my side notes it said that Mark gives the events that happened earlier and Luke gave what happened and that the one had a change of heart when he saw Jesus forgiving his executioners. Interesting.
11. Read in Keller’s book from After Mark 15:11-15 up to Darkness and Disintegration and share your notes and comments. – I never really saw that though it was dark as Jesus was being crucified, it was dark like nigh time. I had to google again to find out how the 6th hour could be noon since our time starts a new day at 12:00am. Very interesting that in those times the day started when the first three stars appeared in the night sky or the position of the son. So fun digging in to figure out what exactly is being said in the Bible.
Thanks, Julie! (On the morphine.)
Wednesday: Darkness and Disintegration
12. Read this section in the chapter through Amos 8:7-8 and share your notes and comments. – How true for me when I don’t focus on God and make him my priority, I am way off track with my life. I can feel like I’m alone and feel that physical darkness. Gloom and depression. But once I focus and search Him out, my mood changes. Things I thought I needed are not important anymore, I just am eager to read books and do Bible studies and learn more about the Only One who can really walk with me.
I am confused though on when Tim Keller talks about our trajectory being off, that it won’t stop at the end of our lives and when God returns he will be judging everything about us. That I understand, but what I’m confused on is that I will most likely be imperfect because I’m a sinful Christian. And because I am imperfect, I will not be able to remain in His presence. Doesn’t this seem like getting to Heaven is based on our works then?
13. Read the section in Keller’s book following Amos 8:7-8 up to The Beauty of Darkness and share your notes and comments.
The curtain at the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. This curtain is so thick that it can serve as a wall. Only the high priest can enter it and only once a year after a blood sacrifice.
14. Read Mark 15:35-39
A. What is the significance of the curtain being torn from top to bottom?
This is the sacrifice that ends all sacrifices; the way is now open to approach (God). No more sacrifices needed to claim righteousness with God.
B. Of the centurion’s statement?
He was the first one to get that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God. And he was not a Jew; he was a Roman, a hardened, brutal man. Keller writes: The beauty of Jesus in his death must have flooded his darkness with light. (when the centurion heard Jesus’ cry and saw how he died, the centurion said, surely, this was the Son of God!)
A. Give thanks for anything you see in this passage that applies to you.
Thank you, Jesus, that you died for me and have taken me away from spiritual darkness into your light. Thank you for the centurion’s faith, evidence that you are above and beyond our past. Thank you that the Holy of holies is accessible to us now where we can come boldly through the throne of grace and find mercy in times of need. No more sacrifice. You finish “The End” so we can have “The Beginning”. And I can come “just as I am without one plea”.
11. Read in Keller’s book from After Mark 15:11-15 up to Darkness and Disintegration and share your notes and comments.
I thought the comments about darkness were interesting…how it had to be a supernatural darkness because the worldly explanations do not work.
I also thought the idea Keller points out that when Jesus says “My God, My God…” He is using an intimate term by saying the word “My.” So sweet.
13. Read the section in Keller’s book following Amos 8:7-8 up to The Beauty of Darkness and share your notes and comments.
I am immediately blown away by the fact that over the Disciples, the hard hearted Centurion who had risen in the ranks and had inflicted upon and seen many deaths was the first to get that Jesus is God. Though I love Keller’s pondering that since this Centurion had seen many deaths he saw the beauty in Jesus’ death and it pierced his hard heart-“flooded his darkness with light”. Mark 15: 39 even states the fact that the Centurion who saw how Jesus died, said surely this man was the Son of God. (NIV).
14. Read Mark 15:35-39
A. What is the significance of the curtain being torn from top to bottom?
The significance is God saying it is Me Who did this-and it is complete for Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice-you need to sacrifice in the Temple no more for anyone who believes can connect with God.
B. Of the centurion’s statement?
The Roman Centurion proclaimed Jesus is the Son of God. Someone whose heart is hardened by death for he saw so many and inflicted so many
C. Give thanks for anything you see in this passage that applies to you.
Jesus I am humbled by all this and awestruck at your power to not only break through darkness but literally obliterate it with your light. I love how you, with your beauty obliterated the hard stone encased around this man’s heart. He didn’t need to be convinced for He experienced you for your beauty is unlike human beauty. Lord empower me to reflect your beauty to those around me and to those you put in my path though I have this thorn of flesh still that pulls me to wander..Help me to continue to walk in your light and let you pierce my darkness so that more of you can shine from within. Please, today help me to be faithful to you regardless of what is going on around me. Help me to remember your powerful beauty on the cross- that crushed the darkness in this Centurion’s heart. In your precious and holy name, amen
Rebecca — you are pressing in and it shows.
Agreed, praying for you dear Rebecca…

This chapter is really speaking to me! The darkness Keller speaks of is true. In 2007 I went on a trip, a research cruise, with a friend who taught at UNH. At night, because we were 70 miles off the coast of Costs Rica, there was absolutely NO light. We were not in the shipping lanes, there was no city in the distance. The middle of the Pacific Ocean was pretty scary at that time.
Here’s a blog post of mine (one of my jobs on the ship was to write the blog) if you’re interested (or bored…hahaha).

“In the darkness you can’t see yourself.” Whoa..
I love how he speaks of the Sun too! How God is light and we can see everything clearly.
These phrases hit me:
“Also, if you center on anything but God, you suffer a loss of identity. Your identity will be fragile and insecure, because it’s based on the things you center your life on. It’s based on human approval. It’s based on how well you perform. You don’t really know who you are.”
So true. Makes me think hard.
Laura, what fun to see a bit of your life! I read some of the blog. I had a similar experience on the Amazon (but no blog about it😉).Also – that same quote in Keller resounded deeply with me as well.

11. Read in Keller’s book from After Mark 15:11-15 up to Darkness and Disintegration and share your notes and comments.
The darkness from noon to 3 while Jesus was on the cross, was supernatural. In the Bible, darkness during the day is a sign of Gods judgement. Just as there was a plague of darkness in Egypt at the time of the passover. During the darkness of Jesus on the cross, He was taking on the judgment of God. Jesus experienced separation from God…”My God, my God, Why have you abandoned Me?” The judgement that should of fallen in us, fell on Jesus! Each time I read this it is humbling and brings tears to my eyes.

12. Read this section in the chapter through Amos 8:7-8 and share your notes and comments.
This statement really stood out to me; “If you orbit around God, then you life has truth and vitality. You are in the light. But if you turn away from God and orbit around anything else – your career, a relationship, your family – as the source of your warmth and your hope, the result is spiritual darkness. You are turning away from the truth, away from life, toward darkness.” I think we can do this without even knowing it and then wake up and ask how’d we get here. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the things of this world…Lord, help me to die to self daily!

13. Read the section in Keller’s book following Amos 8:7-8 up to The Beauty of Darkness and share your notes and comments.
I found what Keller said about the centurion so fascinating. How he references what he said, to the first sentence in Mark 1:1 and no one ever called Him that until the centurion…he was the first person to confess the deity of Jesus Christ. I liked Keller’s inquiring mind as to why…this centurion had seen many people take their last breath and probably caused it, but there was something different he saw in the death of Jesus that penetrated the darkness. “The tenderness, despite the terror…the beauty of Jesus in His death.”
14. Read Mark 15:35-39
A. What is the significance of the curtain being torn from top to bottom?
It opened up the communication between God and man. Because of what Christ did for us on the cross we have access to the Holy of Holies…He is our High Priest. “For there is only one God, and one Mediator between God and mankind, the Man Christ Jesus.” 1 Timothy 2:5
B. Of the centurion’s statement?
He proclaimed the deity of Jesus Christ. He saw Jesus breathe His last breath and the Amplified says “voluntarily, sovereignly dismissed and released His spirit, His body in submission to His Father’s plan. Fully in control”…it was Jesus who chose to die.
C. Give thanks for anything you see in this passage that applies to you.
I honestly can only say thank You Jesus, thank You!
Sharon — I love that though you are so grounded, know the Word so well, you still have such a teachable and grateful heart.

15. Read this section in Keller’s book and share your notes and comments.
What good is it that Jesus suffered. A question His followers must of asked themselves over and over after the crucifixion but they “eventually saw they had been looking right at the greatest act of God’s love, power and justice in history.” It was going to be alright!
Thursday: The Curtain and The Centurion
13. Read the section in Keller’s book following Amos 8:7-8 up to The Beauty of Darkness and share your notes and comments. – First, thank you Jesus that you sacrificed your life on the cross so my trajectory, my life’s direction was changed forever. I did not realized that the veil that was torn was more like a wall and by it being torn in two from top to bottom would definitely make some wonder on how that happened and others know without a doubt that Jesus was truly the Son of God, the one he said he was. I loved the detail on the centurion, I did not know that about them either and how eye opening to see in the detail how different Jesus’ death was compared to others he had seen die. So interesting to me.
14. Read Mark 15:35-39
A. What is the significance of the curtain being torn from top to bottom? – I would think this was from ceiling to floor and for it to be torn from top to bottom had to be a miraculous thing that happened. Not like some small crack that anyone could have just chipped away at, but for something similar to a wall be torn in two would be something no man could have accomplished. This only shows that Jesus’ power was what did it.
B. Of the centurion’s statement? – An unbeliever of Jesus, making a statement confirming that Jesus is who he said he is, is more powerful than even one of his disciples claiming it. Someone, like Keller said, who had seen many deaths but none that compared to how Jesus died. Powerful witness from the centurion.
C. Give thanks for anything you see in this passage that applies to you. – Oh Lord, thank you again for the unconditional sacrifice you made by dying on the cross for me. My life has forever been changed becaue of you. I could not have gotten where I am today, having a relationship with you, surviving what I thought was a rough life, with the sacrifice you made. I cannot thank you enough.
