Nine months deaf
Nine months mute
Nine months of wonder
as his withered wife blossoms.
Nine months to ponder
Nine months to repent
And then, God unleashes Zechariah’s tongue.
When Zechariah’s “tongue was loosed”
a holy FEAR (the Greek word “phobos”) fell
upon the neighbors,
and then, throughout Judea.
Why?
Because Zechariah’s Prophetic Song showed the promised time had come.
Don’t you think they each thought:
Am I ready?
Just as we know the 2nd Advent is promised,
can you imagine how you would feel if God showed you Christ’s return
was going to happen today?
Would you not think?
Am I ready?
Let us delve together into the rich song of Zechariah,
and in so doing, truly prepare our hearts for this Christmas.
Last Thursday R. C. Sproul died, a man that God used mightily to remind God’s people of the holiness of God, much like John the Baptist. I was remembering my first Christian bookseller’s convention as a young author. Steve and I took our children and we both felt it had almost a carnival air with over a thousand booths, many selling bumper stickers, t-shirts, and trinkets. On Sunday one big name singer after another came out and the audience was in a state of adulation. It didn’t feel like a holy place.
Then R. C. Sproul came out to give the message about the goodness and the severity of God.
A holy hush came over the crowd, like I imagine happened that day when Zechariah’s tongue was loosed, and again, when John the Baptist told people to repent for the Messiah was coming.
Sunday:
1.What stands out to you from the above and why?
2. How do you think you would have felt if you were in the room when Zechariah began to prophecy that the Christ was imminent? Why?
Monday: This was a Prophecy from God
Deliverance will come in two distinct phases, the first Advent and the second Advent, but to Zechariah’s mind it was all one package. We, who are on the other side of the first Advent, can better see the two mountain peaks in Zechariah’s prophecy.
3. As an overview, read Zechariah’s whole prayer of prophetic praise (Luke 1:68-79) and write down a few things that the Messiah will do that are meaningful to you. Which of these have happened already in part?
Tuesday: He Has Visited His People!
Please, please, prepare your heart with this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlXM98lRwwI
4. Read Luke 1:67-71
A. What is the first thing Zechariah praises God for in verse 68?
B. The word “visited” is like “Immanuel” — God is with us. But using a concordance (or an online sight such a Bible Gateway), find another time or two when the same concept of God coming down and visiting us is expressed in the gospels. Does this give you any additional light? If so, explain. (Another occurs later in Zechariah’s song)
C. What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
D. Praise God for a time recently that He has rescued you from the enemy who breathes lies, brings despair, and enslaves.
Wednesday: That We Might Serve Him Without Fear
5. Read Luke 1:72-75. What is the purpose of our being rescued from our enemies? How conscious are you of this calling? Explain.
I am pondering the above passage and look forward to our discussion. All of the disciples except for John were martyred. Likewise, Jesus said as we serve Him, a sword will divide us from those who do not love Him, even in our own families. So what does it mean that we can serve Him without fear?
6. What do you think it means that we can serve Him wholeheartedly, no matter how hostile our surroundings, and not have fear? (Look at these passages for insight and ask Him for wisdom before you answer: (Acts 4:25-30 and Romans 8:36-39)
7. How have you been bold for Christ and how could you trust Him more to be bolder?
8. How was John the Baptist bold?
Thursday: And you, my child, will be the prophet of the Most High
9. Read Luke 1:76-77 and list what God’s calling for this child was.
10. Read Luke 3:7-20 and describe how John lived out his calling. How could he serve God without fear?
Friday: The DaySpring or Sunrise from on High
11. Read Luke 1:78-79
A. What will Jesus do?
B. How has He done this for you in the past year or even this Advent?
Saturday:
12. What is your take-a-way and why?

What stands out to me ? The convention that you went to , the carnival like atmosphere. Yet God Still shows up when RC Sproul starts to speak
sometimes it feels like our day has a carnival atmosphere . It’s as if talking about sin and repentance makes you that wet blanket in the conversation. I know a young Christian man who describes his aunt as “ she’s one of those old fashioned Christians “ . God calls us to be set apart for Him , not better than others but separate from worldly things. I think the people who heard Zechariah speak may have started to take inventory, spiritual inventory of their lives. I know that I do and it’s hard .
I like the way God shows up when His people speak. I’m learning that He creates the opportunities to speak just like He used Zechariah after 9 months. And that what looked like a bad thing , Zechariah’s silence actually was a good thing because when the people heard him start talking they Really listened because he had not spoke for so long .
Yes Sue — his silence was a good thing. Zechariah became a great heart!
Sue, I agree with you about the people REALLY listening when Zechariah spoke. I imagine a real hush among the people as Zechariah prophesied.
1. What stood out? Holy fear being the first step of drawing near. So often when I pause to pray, when I close my eyes and take a breath, I am suddenly conscious that this is the God of the universe I am approaching. Not a concept on a page, but He who is the I AM. It is a much better place than a carnival atmosphere.
2. If I had been there for Zechariah’s song, I would have been shocked that he was speaking at all. And then speechless at what he was saying. I think I would have been both spooked and full of anticipation. I can’t look at it as though I weren’t me, and since I am looking forward to Christ now, I would have been then also.
1.What stands out to you from the above and why?
These comments “Just as we know the 2nd Advent is promised can you imagine how you would feel if God showed you Christ’s return was going to happen today? Would you not think? Am I ready?
I suppose because I just finished reading my bible reading of the book of The Revelation it is on my mind that Jesus the Christ is coming again and we have every reason from the Scripture to believe that it could be very soon. The Apostle John wrote at the very end of the Bible “Come, Lord Jesus!” And like John how I desire His return. I want Him to come. I also recently read John Eldredge’s book “All Things New” about how when Christ returns He will restore the Earth and will make all things new again. It was a book full of hope.
But the question “Am I ready?”
I want to think I am ready but I think when the time happens I will be like the people in the room with Zechariah. Holy fear.
2. How do you think you would have felt if you were in the room when Zechariah began to prophecy that the Christ was imminent? Why?
I think I would be like those who were in that room.
Holy Fear can be the only response to the presence of the Holy Spirit when He comes in power and speaks through his servant as with Zechariah.
I liked Eldredge’s book too — I heard him interviewed and it was interesting he didn’t read Alcorn’s book, for in many ways they were similar — perhaps because they were both seeing what heaven will really be like.
Dee , I have a question about the question ” Am I ready ? Aren’t we ready because of what Christ has done for us?
I know I can’t ever be good enough , only because of Jesus will I go to Heaven but I know that I can and should put off sin , too. My sin doesn’t keep me from eternity , it keeps me from intimacy with Jesus now.
Or are you asking if I’d like to go today ? 🙂 Or personally long for His coming now?
That’s absolutely right, Sue. We are ready because of what Christ is done. That shows your trust is in the right place!
Thank you Dee !
1.What stands out to you from the above and why?
“Don’t you think they each thought: Am I ready?”
I have often thought about my response if I knew Christ was coming today. While I long for that Day and do not fear it, it always surprises me when I sense a slight hesitancy in my spirit–some of which is for those I love who do not know Him yet. But there is also a sense of “I’m not ready yet”. It isn’t that I want to stay here, but more an instinctive desire to “be more ____” for Him first. The blank changes–but generally I just want to be more something–more holy, more presentable? And yet I do realize how nonsensical that is!
Oh how I love(d) RC Sproul. I cried when I heard on Thursday. He is just such a trustworthy voice for me of our faith–I love his way of delivering deep theological truths with such humility and often humor, that even I could begin to grasp some of what he taught. My husband listens to his podcast almost every day. So many great articles were written about him the last few days, but I appreciated the honesty in what he said about death, a few years ago–“I am not afraid of going to heaven. It’s the process that frightens me. I don’t know by what means I will die. It may be via a process of suffering, and that frightens me.I know that even this shouldn’t frighten me. There are lots of things that frighten me that I shouldn’t let frighten me. The Scripture declares that perfect love casts out fear. But love is still imperfect, and fear hangs around…You can grieve for me the week before I die, if I’m scared and hurting, but when I gasp that last fleeting breath and my immortal soul flees to heaven, I’m going to be jumping over fire hydrants down the golden streets…”
2. How do you think you would have felt if you were in the room when Zechariah began to prophecy that the Christ was imminent? Why?
“Holy fear”–my first thought was that there would be a burning within my heart (like Lk. 24:32). Interestingly, this past week I heard Sproul talking about the imminence of Christ’s return. The idea that He could be so near, OH it fills me with such hope. And to linger on that thought, dissolves any hesitancy of “being ready”! I will never be ready enough in my own state but because of Christ, I am a citizen of Heaven, it is Home.
I love that quote from Sproul. Yes, so like him. Publishers send out books to famous people when you write a new book. He wrote and thanked me for The God of All Comfort. I was amazed. Love that your husband listens to his podcast so much. He will be missed.
Lizzy – we were crying together dear sister. Sweet, eloquent words from you on R.C. Sproul. 🙂
What stood out?
Until last week on this blog, it has never occurred to me that Zechariah might be deaf as well as dumb. I’m still not completely convinced because it is a possibility that the women were signing just because they thought perhaps they associated deafness with dumbness in that culture and time; but, still, pondering the possibility of not being able to hear and what it might be like if I was deaf for 9+ months, wow! There would certainly be less distractions. And then there is lots of time for Z. to ponder the angel and his message. Imagine the wonder and awe of it all! Holy Fear, indeed!
And I hadn’t thought of how deafness could increase pondering!
Diane, I, too did not think that Zechariah might have been deaf as well as dumb. I took care of a patient years ago who was deaf and dumb and had a stroke. My heart was breaking each day I took care of him. He did not know how to tell us of his needs. I came to where I would write words on the palm of his hands. I couldn’t work any day without crying for him and his suffering. Anyway, I am digressing here. And crying upon remembrance of that sweet man a long time ago.
What stood out?
Holy fear is the first step to drawing near. I am often overcome by the thought that Jesus loves me-what goes on in our world nowadays pains me. The thought of His imminent coming brings both joy and fear. Joy for the end of all pain and fear for those I love who are not walking with the Lord. That others may know “Immanuel” is my heart’s cry. We sang two songs today at church about our “Immanuel”-He is with us, with me as we, I await the second Advent. But while waiting, may my heart always be burning for Him.
Love that picture of you writing on his palms, Bing.
I enjoyed reading Zechariah’s song in a new light this Christmas. God has recently worked strongly in my heart to show me some major sins in my life (bitterness and anger and fear of man being supreme) which I had never seen before. I always thought everybody else was to blame for my rotten attitude. I see now that bitterness and anger and fear of man are some of the most vile and ferocious enemies of the soul. I have a new peace I never ever had before. It is still a struggle of mine to battle these Enemies, but God is helping me. When I read Zechariah’s song, I know it refers to the enemies of God’s people in a physical sense, but I also know that in a deeper way for us today, it is talking of the deliverance of our spiritual enemies. These enemies of anger and bitterness and man fear are cruel taskmasters and they destroy us from the inside out. Thank God that He sent Jesus to forever defeat these massive enemies, and I can be victorious and serve Him now without fear. My prayer has been answered: “Dear God, please don’t change my circumstances. Please change ME!!” This song has been a sweet encouragement in this battle against fear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8TkUMJtK5k&list=RDf8TkUMJtK5k
Wow, Miriam. This is huge growth!!!
Thanks for the song reminder Miriam! I LOVE it and hasn’t listened in a while . As I have such pain this Christmas this is very encouraging to me this morning on Christmas Eve.
1.What stands out to you from the above and why?
How warm the post makes me feel. Traveling through my homeland of the south yesterday made me a bit sad. Nary a Christmas decoration to be found…what’s up with that? It started at the hotel where I stayed Saturday night. Not one sign of Christmas anywhere! That was Alabama! Then in South Carolina I stopped at a McDonalds, and again, not one reminder of the season! No decorations on the light posts in shopping centers I passed on the highway. There were some houses with lights and such, I will say that. Now I know Christmas trees can be a bit controversial, but no holly? No wreath? No nothing?! I know it’s not the nativity or anything, but I am saddened that it appears that Christmas isn’t being celebrated as it used to be. An alien to our planet would not know it was the holiday season based on what I saw!
So, just reading this blog entry (although short-ish) made me feel good. Reality was reinforced for me.
I am unfamiliar with who R.C Sproul was, although a friend posted something to me about his death last week and I know you (or someone on the blog) has mentioned his name before. Want to elaborate on just who and what he did?
2. How do you think you would have felt if you were in the room when Zechariah began to prophecy that the Christ was imminent? Why?
I probably would have thought he was insane! Here was a man who was unable to speak (or hear so I learned) who all the sudden speaks after 9 months?! Crazy. It would have felt eerie.
Laura, I am surprised and saddened that you saw so little Christmas displayed as you traveled yesterday. I guess it is good to live in a small town in central Nebraska. Christmas is on display everywhere. We have a town square with a bandstand (large gazebo) in the center. Eveything is covered in Christmas lights from light posts to trees and most businesses around the square have lights and decorations. To top it off there is a large nativity in one corner that faces the main highway through town. A few years ago someone anonymously tried to protest the nativity being there. That wasn’t recieved well and the ministerial association in town took on the ownership of it being there and the city government has no part in it. Large and small homes on most all our streets have Christmas lights. In fact I have felt like we have more lights this year than ever. It’s not perfect by any means but small town America is a good place to live at Christmas time.
Laura – all I can say is “Did you drive through Maryland without calling me????” 🙂 Say it isn’t so!! And as Dee urged you, dig up R.C. Sproul’s podcasts and ENJOY. Love you.
Jackie! Did not go through Maryland this time; DC traffic wipes me out! I did try to meet up with Lizzie, but we couldn’t coordinate our schedules. Next time 😘 Lizzy. LOVE seeing you here sweet Jackie!
3. As an overview, read Zechariah’s whole prayer of prophetic praise (Luke 1:68-79) and write down a few things that the Messiah will do that are meaningful to you.
I am stirred by the idea this season, that God came to visit his people, to save them and bless them with forgiveness. It says He came and visited, redeemed, and saved his people from their enemies. He came as a baby, in the flesh, to have the human experience; to be able to relate to us as humans. He humbled himself and came to earth. Thank You Jesus for saving my soul! Dear Jesus help me help others understand this before it is too late for them. I especially ask on behalf of my children and husband. Please Lord Jesus, melt their hearts now. They need You now. Don’t let it take years as it did with me, to comprehend just what is truly important in their lives. You. Amen.
Which of these have happened already in part?
Jesus came to earth, and for the people of that time, saved them from their enemies. This was a Holy oath to Abraham, fulfilled at the time Jesus was on earth. They served him without fear (Stephen comes to mind) He protects us now by being a light for each of us.
Laura — so interesting about the lack of Christmas decorations where you traveled in the south. Wondering what is up with that!
Oh, go online and learn about Sproul and listen to his podcasts. Truly, a man of God. Before Keller I listened to him the most. My first ipod I bought from his ministry filled with his sermons. So good.
So, North Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania did not disappoint in the Christmas decoration department! A Micky D’s in Pennsylvania had a tree inside the store and I saw Santa riding a few tractors as I passed through Virginia. North Carolina definitely was “rockin” THE story; I saw a beautiful manger cut out on a lawn as well as “Thank You Jesus” signs in people’s yards. Apparently a 16 year old boy started that campaign! I LOVE that 😇.
https://www.thankyoujesussigns.com/about-the-movement/
I felt really good when my my good friend “Siri” took me through the back woods of Connecticut to avoid an accident too! I’m telling you the Connecticans (?) had the most beautiful lights and holly displays in their old school homes. They probably win, hands down. Still disappointed in my southern peeps.
1.What stands out to you from the above and why?
The Carnival atmosphere Dee experienced and then R.C. Sproul spoke-and there was a Holy hush.
R.C. made a huge impact on me as a young believer and also as I grew. I would listen to the radio and hear him teach almost on a daily basis. His voice was unique and powerful. When I heard R.C. I didn’t think-Oh he is amazing, I thought-listen for God is going to speak to me. R.C. was trustworthy-I always knew it was going to be sound.
Honestly, the carnival thing upsets me-reminds me of the Temple when Jesus knocked over the merchant tables. Also, we idolize teachers and worship them instead of Him-I have done that! This is why it can be easy for us not to check what we are being taught. SO glad He is long suffering with us but we must be so careful, especially in this day and age.
One more-and this probably doesn’t need to be said, but.. 🙂 I have seen t-shirts that are God honoring, but the ones I have seen lately on facebook from this company that has a lot of believers liking it-oh my. They sell one with a picture of a Ketchup label saying, “catch up with Jesus, blessed from my head To-Ma-Toes” -REALLY? Ugh.
I rabbit trailed..sorry. 🙂
Love it that you love Sproul, Rebecca.
I always like your rabbit trails. That one reminds me of when Richard Wurmbrand asked Kathy Troccoli to never sing her song that God is like Pepsi again. She never did.
Rebecca – “When I heard R.C. I didn’t think – Oh he is amazing, I thought – listen for God is going to speak to me.” Yes, yes. You spoke my heart! He challenged my thinking, but he faithfully whetted my appetite for the LORD. Oh, how annointed (not perfect)he was. 🙂
Agreed , Rebecca , some of the t-shirts and little signs for your home, ” Just give me a little bit of Jesus and a whole lot of Coffee” that one makes me wince 🙂
4. The first thing Zechariah praises God for is ‘coming’ or ‘visiting’ His people. The NIV uses come instead of visit or Immanuel. Like in vs 78, the rising sun will come to us from heaven. Other references were Matt 1:23, quoting Isaiah, they will call him Immanuel…., Luke 7:16, the crowd praised God, saying God has come to help His people…, Luke 19:44, Jesus said Israel would be judged for not recognizing it when God came to them.
C). God’s Spirit within has saved us, is saving us, and will save us. Jesus’s death bought us from the right of the devil to rule over us. His life within us now gives us the opportunity to say no to evil and yes to God on a moment by moment basis. And in the future, Christ will completely do away with evil.
D. I am praising God for the way He is working in and through our church in the matter of our youth pastor. Satan wanted to cause division and destruction, gossip and back biting. But God is bringing about a spirit of mercy and unity and desire for God to be honored. Like someone said to me yesterday, “I’d never sign up for this, but it has been marvelous to see.”
That is marvelous to see, Mary.
Okay, so i have to put this here to let you know to pray for this Saturday. Me and my brother, Jim, have been sharing with my dad who doesn’t know Jesus… yet. 🙂 My brother gave him The Case for Christ a few weeks ago and prayed with him. My dad told my brother that he believes. We think he might be a new Christian. 🙂 Although after talking with him last night he said his dad has to be in heaven for he lived a good life-but this could be because either he is a baby believer-or going through the birth canal-not sure yet. Yet he also said he has given his life to Jesus. He told me My brother is coming by this Saturday to help him spiritually and wanted to know if I could come too. So I am going. 🙂 Please pray, for my dad doesn’t have much time left here. He has advanced stage COPD, on oxygen 24/7 and he isn’t going to get better. He told me yesterday he used to be agnostic but that has totally changed now. I am thrilled at what God is doing in his heart!!
Exciting. Oh Lord, anoint Rebecca and Jim and prepare their dad’s heart. May You give them assurance of his salvation.
Praying for you Rebecca, and for your dad and Jim . Praying that the LORD would speak through you both the exact words that your father needs to hear . God is surely with you.
OH Rebecca. So tender, so hopeful. My pastor read a letter in our small group just a couple of weeks ago from the son of an 89 year old man who Pastor Paul’s father had witnessed to and prayed for for many decades…..this man came to Christ only a couple of months before he died……and his life was transformed! The details his son joyfully shared had us all in or near tears! Our God does the impossible. Praying that this will be so for your precious dad. Oh Lord, please rescue Rebecca’s dad, redeem him and give him that blessed assurance that he is your child. May his last breath on this earth – whenever that may be – be his first breath beholding Jesus in paradise. Amen.
Jackie — so nice to see you here!
Father, I want to praise you for this good work you are doing in the life of Rebecca’s dad. I ask that you bless him richly through Rebecca and Jim as they share more of You and your Word with him. Thankyou for answering prayers for him and we are trusting you to do a good work in his life this Saturday. May it all be to the honor and glory of God through Jesus Christ.
Rebecca, this is wonderful news! Praying for you and your brother and your Dad. Oh what joy to see and be a part of a new Christian’s life. Rejoicing with many!
Oh, Rebecca. This is news worth rejoicing in. I am praying that his conversion is real and I will be praying for you all this Saturday!
Sunday
1.What stands out to you from the above and why?
The drama of the whole story. The miraculous inter-mixing of Holy God with sinful humans. It’s remarkable!
It’s nice to think of R.C. Sproul in heaven now.
2. How do you think you would have felt if you were in the room when Zechariah began to prophecy that the Christ was imminent? Why?
Pretty excited! The confirmation of Z’s physical condition reversing, his new baby, the current political-historical situation—it would all be really amazing to witness firsthand. Goosebumps and shivers for sure!
Monday
3. As an overview, read Zechariah’s whole prayer of prophetic praise (Luke 1:68-79) and write down a few things that the Messiah will do that are meaningful to you. Which of these have happened already in part?
vs 78-79 “because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
These have happened for me since knowing Jesus as my savior when I was 18. I have been visited with God’s tender mercy of forgiveness through Jesus’ sacrifice for me. He has brought His light into my darkness and guides my feet into His peace. But in the world around me there is still a lot of darkness and lack of peace. His promises are made to each individual heart, to the body of believers, and to the whole world at the same time, I think. There are a lot of different timeframes involved.
3. As an overview, read Zechariah’s whole prayer of prophetic praise (Luke 1:68-79) and write down a few things that the Messiah will do that are meaningful to you.
He has redeemed me
He has delivered me from the hands of my enemy , I no longer sit in darkness or the shadow of death.
This is one …. ” He guides my feet into the pathway of peace ” My Bible notes says that peace is a harmonious relationship with God.
Which of these have happened already in part?
John made the way before the LORD , he proclaimed the way of salvation .
The LORD has redeemed His people , those who repent and receive Jesus.
We are saved from the enemy. Spiritual enemies now , human enemies both now and later when He comes back.
He has remembered His holy covenant to us , this is daily
Dee,
I just have to jump in here and thank you for sharing a bit about R.C. Sproul. Like Lizzy, I could not hold back the tears when I heard of his death. For a long, long time he has been one of my three most trusted “go to’s” in terms of rock solid reliability, humility and faithfully pointing to the magnificence and holiness of our God! Heaven’s gain IS our loss – but, as John Piper so eloquently stated: “I love R.C. Sproul. I am sure I owe him more than I can even recall. My reverence for the holiness of God and the truth of his word would not be the same without his influence. I will miss him (for a short while).” Oh, how I too will miss him (certainly having never personally met him! 🙂 )…..for a short while. Amen.
“He who testifies to these things says ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” Revelation 22:20
Oh yes, Jackie. He wrote me once to encourage me about The God of All Comfort. I wanted to frame it, but seemed like an approval idol. But how dear he was to do it!
Oh Dee. That book of yours probably remains my favorite! The untold ripples of comfort the Lord helped you to write…..who can know? I am sure that Sproul’s encouragement was heartfelt and discerning – what a gift. 🙂
OOOH my Advent God-spy!! It’s JACKIE!! SO sweet to “see” you here dear friend. You are so missed, but it is always such joy to see you when you can pop in. Love & prayers for you~
3. As an overview, read Zechariah’s whole prayer of prophetic praise (Luke 1:68-79) and write down a few things that the Messiah will do that are meaningful to you. Which of these have happened already in part?
Today, these verse struck me, vs. 74-75: “that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.” I do long for that Day when I will serve and love Him perfectly–in all holiness and righteousness, as He deserves.
Also these which have already happened in part: v.68 “he has visited and redeemed his people”; v.69 “raised up a horn of salvation for us”; v. 70 “he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets”; and v. 72, he has shown us mercy. In the last several years I think I have realized more the beauty, the generosity, of His mercy. I guess the more I grow, the more I see my own depravity, my desperate need of Him, and then see just how merciful He is to love me so.
4. Read Luke 1:67-71
A. What is the first thing Zechariah praises God for in verse 68?
Visiting and redeeming His people.
Well, John talks about Jesus and God being here since the beginning, together.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:1-5, 9-14 ESV
http://bible.com/59/jhn.1.1-5,9-14.esv
He came to give His people LIFE, eternal life.
He came to show us light. How we could be the light to others, for Him.
What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
We should be saved from our enemies and all who hate us.
The martyrs of Jesus’ time have been saved. We will all be saved in the second coming.
D. Praise God for a time recently that He has rescued you from the enemy who breathes lies, brings despair, and enslaves.
My family has been going through someone of a crisis over the past four months. I have described some of this on the blog. However, there have been blessings all throughout this ordeal. I have described this as well. I am hoping, anticipating, a blessing in the next few weeks as I just left my daughter homeless on the streets of New Orleans. She had a car and I needed to get it back because my youngest son needs it for school in January, that’s why I was driving through the country this past weekend. It is hard to leave your child, without a roof over her head, only a few articles of clothing, and no food to speak of, in such a place as New Orleans but she does not want our help. She has truly hurt our family, and some do not want her back. This is all about her boyfriend really, who we gave a chance to get his act together, and he decided not to so we were forced to kick him out of our house. She decided to go with him. I am sad, but we have truly done everything we can to get her on the right road. It is now her turn to pick up the pieces and run, and I can’t wait to see how God will help her with that. If you think of Sarah would you pray for her safety and for her to dig deep inside and to know how much God loves her ? The enemy does abound. Thank you Jesus for loving us! Thank you Jesus for taking care of Sarah at this time. I anticipate your work in her life. Amen
Laura — beautiful answers to questions. Thanks for sharing aobut Sarah too so we can pray. Such wrenching emotion, and yet I do feel you made the right choices in the hopes of bringing her to her senses. May it be.
Laura – God is fortifying and strengthening you so, isn’t He? Few things in life can compare with watching our children reap the harvest they have sown. I pray that one day Sarah will have a new song to sing in her life….a song of redemption and the power of Jesus Christ! 🙂 One of the godliest men I know is a racetrack chaplain living in New Orleans. I can easily contact him if need be on down the line.
That sounds interesting Jackie (the chaplain). My husband reminded me that years ago we used to go to a racetrack in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and pass out booklets with our church. I did encourage her to go to church. Southern churches are really large and I thought she might find assistance with one. I’m so happy you are here. Warms my heart 😊.
Laura, Thanks for sharing more of your story concerning Sarah. I will pray for her. Our oldest son was our prodigal and we put him out on the street so to speak when he flunked out of college and wouldn’t take responsibility for himself financially and morally. We took his car away and he was on the street with only his backpack. It is heart wrenching as a parent and we had close family members who disageed with us. Needless to say he floundered for several years. He came home briefly but wouldn’t stay because of our rules. We had our two youngest children in the home and weren’t willing to compromise certain behaviors. Now nearly 30 years later God is restoring some of the years that the locusts have eaten and we actually are heading to Texas in a couple of days to spend Christmas in his home with his family. After being there last Spring I didn’t want to go back but God in His wonderful grace has brought about reconciliation this year in a meaningful way. It has all been a work of time. I share with you to give you hope. We have a faithful God Who answers prayer. He desperately loves the prodigals like your Sarah and our son.
Bev, your story gives me hope! Thank you for telling it here. It’s funny, I began writing a book about my kids/family several years ago thinking one day all the strife would be over and I could be an encouragement to other moms. I have always believed we were in a situation with our kids that would eventually go away and I could praise God for pulling us through. That was about 10 years ago and I still can’t write the book with the happy ending I thought we would have by now. Ashes to beauty.
I will be praying for her . It is hard to let go but then we let God . I have to remind myself often of that but God Loves our prodigals more than we do . So thankful!
2. How do you think you would have felt if you were in the room when Zechariah began to prophecy that the Christ was imminent? Why?
I wonder. I am so weary of the hard things life on this fallen earth brings, I imagine hope of a better future, of a savior, would flood in, but then, when I examine my heart and see that I still struggle with preoccupations about money and how I am perceived by other people and other stupid things, I would worry that I had been like one of the foolish virgins who had not replenished the oil in my lamp, or the foolish servant who buried his talents in the ground.
Chris — yes. And those are rather frightening parables, but I see He has you. You have oil in your lamp, and you have not buried your talents. As Lizzy as expressed, the closer we get to Him, the more we see our depravity, but as I know you know, our confidence must be in His blood making us as white as snow. And yes, as I john teaches, we should see evidence, but I do, dear one, I do!
Thank you for this encouragement my friends, and Jackie it is so very wonderful to see you here again!
Oh Chris. Perfect words of encouragement from Dee. To her words I say “amen”. And I thank you for reminding us of the warnings in these parables. So wise to ponder them.
3. As an overview, read Zechariah’s whole prayer of prophetic praise (Luke 1:68-79) and write down a few things that the Messiah will do that are meaningful to you. Which of these have happened already in part?
This stood out to me:
“that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us”
I thought about our real enemy, how Jesus has rescued us already and will, when He comes again put down that rebellion forever. This is meaningful to me, this hope is an anchor for my soul.
This also stood out to me:
“to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death”
I love this theme and image in scripture, of hopeless gloom and darkness being dispelled by healing hopeful LIGHT!
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” Isaiah 9:2
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, Ephesians 5:8
Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy. Though I fall I will rise; Though I dwell in darkness, the LORD is a light for me.
Micah 7:8
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
1 Peter 2:9
He has already called us out of darkness into His light, he has already gained victory over our real enemy.
I am not sure if I am tracking with what you wanted us to get from this but I thought about a quote Tim Keller uses sometimes in his sermons referring to the Angel of the Lord, the preincarnate Christ in the OT which has stuck with me:
“The angel is revealed as a merciful ‘accommodation’ or ‘condescension’ of God, whereby the Lord can be present among a sinful people when, were he to go with them himself, his presence would consume them…. He is that mode of deity whereby the holy God can keep company with sinners. There is only one other in the Bible who is both identical with and yet distinct from the Lord. One who, without abandoning the full essence and prerogatives of deity… is able to accommodate himself to the company of sinners… Jesus Christ.”
I found this too which I thought was worth pondering:
Exodus 40:34–35 (ESV) 34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
Daniel Hyde of Ligonier Ministries: Here is such a mind-blowing idea about the God of the Bible that we have to pause for a moment. The eternal God who is not constrained by the existence of time, the infinite God who is not bound by the constraints of space, the transcendent God who dwells above and beyond all time and space, and the immense God who fills all time and space condescended to the weakness of His people and became manifest for their benefit in one locale. This God is not bound by time, but He bound Himself to the time-bound experience of His people. This God is not bound by space, but He bound Himself to this box. He is above all creational constraints, but He bound Himself to them. He is everywhere, but He was there.
Beautiful quote!
C. What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
I don’t read ahead before I answer questions, sometimes I think I should 🙂
Our enemy has been defeated in that we no longer are slaves to him, we have a new nature, we can choose to walk in the light, we can repent, our forgiveness has been secured. But our enemy still works us over. The second advent will put him away for good, our Savior will come mounted on a white horse, Faithful and True, he will defeat Satan, sin and death will be put away. He will be the Light and we will dwell with Him forever.
4. Read Luke 1:67-71
A. What is the first thing Zechariah praises God for in verse 68?
“He has visited and redeemed his people” God has come and bought back his people. He is now with them and will free them.
Luke 1:78-79 “….because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Here Zechariah speaks of the Christ Who is coming and will be among them (visit them) and bring them relief.
Luke 7:16 “Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”
This account was when Jesus stopped a funeral procession and raised the only son of a widow back to life. The people recognized this was something special and only God could do what they had just seen happen. Only a prophet of God could do that.
The Jewish people had not had any prophecies for around 400 years since Malachi and they were anxiously waiting for their Messiah to come and free them from the oppression of their situation. This was a clear sign He had visited them (was with them).
C. What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
( that we should be saved from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us;)
The first Advent brought Salvation from our sin. Sin was our biggest enemy keeping us from a relationship with God. Jesus came and became a man and lived among us. Sinless and perfect He died and bought our redemption from sin. Spiritually we can be made right with God. At the second Advent all things will be made new and we will be given a resurrection body that is perfect and whole. One like Jesus and Satan our soul’s enemy will be defeated and put away from us forever.
D. Praise God for a time recently that He has rescued you from the enemy who breathes lies, brings despair, and enslaves.
I can’t think a time recently that I felt rescued in a significant way but I believe God is faithfully protecting me moment by moment from the enemy of my soul by the power of Christ.
“That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.”
2 Corinthians 4:16 NLT
4. Read Luke 1:67-71
A. What is the first thing Zechariah praises God for in verse 68?
“..he has visited and redeemed his people”
John 6:33, 35, 38-39 “For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world…I am the bread of life… For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. ”
I like the present tense that Jesus uses to describe himself as the bread of life. It’s just as meaningful to me in my life as it was when he spoke the words out loud.
C. What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
“that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.”
I feel this question has been well-answered by others. Satan’s chains of shame and guilt were destroyed by Jesus’ mighty work. Our prison of sin was decommissioned. But the enemy’s work is still ever-present in this fallen world, so we struggle everyday. When Jesus returns the enemy will be removed from this world and all the weapons of evil will be gone.
D. Praise God for a time recently that He has rescued you from the enemy who breathes lies, brings despair, and enslaves.
The weekly discipleship group we’re in at church had grown to over 50 people this year. While a great thing, that’s far too many for meeting at people’s homes as we want to do. So we began meeting only 1X per month. This was a problem for me because I see how much my life of faith grows when I’m in close fellowship with other believers. With such a large group we rarely prayed or talked beyond surface conversations. I began praying for a change, one that I did not feel the freedom to suggest. Two days ago, the leaders of our group recommended that we still meet monthly, but now sub-divide into weekly discipleship groups among ourselves. I knew God was answering my prayer when they started to speak. I also knew that He saved me from the lies/temptations I’d been hearing all season–“Just take your family out of that group” “Start complaining around church about your huge group” “You’re going to be stuck in this situation forever.” Now we’re meeting with a few families in our neighborhood, starting this week. I know He loves and plans good things for me, so I recognize this as Him saving me from trying to manipulate my church relationships through the enemy’s negative, destructive tactics. As you know, Satan has used me well in the past to bring pain into others’ lives through these methods. Trusting God in relationships is the newest path I’m discovering in my journey of faith. I’m so grateful for the Bread of Life who comes down from heaven and saves me from my enemies!
A. What is the first thing Zechariah praises God for in verse 68?
That GOD has visited and redeemed , bought back His people.
This is even before Jesus has been born and God is redeeming His people.
Zechariah 10:3
“My anger burns against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders. For the Lord of All has visited His flock, people of Judah, and will make them like His proud horse
in battle.
I liked this verse from Bible Gateway . I want to be reminded of God fighting for me , of His protection and that He does battle for me. Love protects. And we have times where it feels like GOD did not protect , His answer to me on that has been to trust Him. That He brings beauty from ashes
C. What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
We will be delivered from our enemies , spiritual and human enemies. Some day God will bring Judgement to those that have rejected Him. And the devil is on a short timetable . When Jesus returns he will be cast down . I need to remind myself that the battle is already won.
D. Praise God for a time recently that He has rescued you from the enemy who breathes lies, brings despair, and enslaves.
God is so Kind ! For me it is daily repenting of allowing my trust to wobble . The enemy had his way with me for 17 years , it was a good long run of me listening to his lies. So he doesn’t give up , he still lies to me.
But Jesus is Stronger and speaks Truth to me in His Word. He tells me Fear not ! His generous mercy is new every morning ,. Before these were just words on a page but He shined His light and I Believe Him now. But I do stumble but by His grace He brings me back into His peace as I spend time with Him. I can only be victorious as I depend upon Him.
5. Read Luke 1:72-75. What is the purpose of our being rescued from our enemies? How conscious are you of this calling? Explain.
I suppose being rescued means He protects us from them so we are free to do His work here.
By concious of His calling, do you mean how I profess Him to others? I think about this often. In fact, I felt compelled to chat with each of my children about their relationship (or lack of) before the end of the year with God. I was struck that they might not be in heaven with me and that made me sad. I also have referenced my faith gently to a friend who claims she is agnostic over the years. She has recently said she feels close to her mom when she goes to the church she attended sparsely as a child and thought she might attend again. I also shared NDW podcasts with her. So, I guess I am very cognizant of my calling now. It has not always been that way.
5. Read Luke 1:72-75. What is the purpose of our being rescued from our enemies? How conscious are you of this calling? Explain.
Our being rescued is the result of God’s promises and we have our security in His promises from the Word. But our being rescued or delivered from our enemies is for the purpose that we may serve Him and to do it without fear.
I am pondering the above passage and look forward to our discussion. All of the disciples except for John were martyred. Likewise, Jesus said as we serve Him, a sword will divide us from those who do not love Him, even in our own families. So what does it mean that we can serve Him without fear?
Serving the Lord without fear of reprisal or ostracism is an age old struggle. And the closer it comes to home the harder it can be as with family members who reject what we believe and know to be true. I think it is only through the power of the Holy Spirit and embracing the reality that we have been delivered from the power of sin and death our ultimate enemy by the blood of Jesus. As we grow to understand just how mighty our God is and how sovereign He is that fear is greatly diminished and taken away. I think for myself I am often just too self aware and it hinders me in being fearful and concerned about the response of others. The more aware I am of my Lord the less I fear people. Better jump to question 6 (-:
6. What do you think it means that we can serve Him wholeheartedly, no matter how hostile our surroundings, and not have fear? (Look at these passages for insight and ask Him for wisdom before you answer: (Acts 4:25-30 and Romans 8:36-39)
Jesus is the difference. The Jewish leadership and the world rejected Him and his message of Salvation and hope when he came to earth and lived among men at the first Advent and have continued to reject Him to this day. It really isn’t about us but about Him. The disciples were warned by Him they would be rejected because of Him. In the passage from Acts, Peter and John shared boldly and prayed for God to give them boldness. In the Romans passage Paul bases his boldness on the fact that nothing absolutely nothing can separate us from the everlasting love of God in Christ Jesus.
7. How have you been bold for Christ and how could you trust Him more to be bolder?
I don’t feel bold. I am not quick to engage strangers into evangelistic conversations. I have been associated with good evangelical churches for years and know all the methods offered and had much of the training. Some how when in those situations I lose the ability to be articulate and it feels forced for me. I am not ashamed of Jesus or my faith in Him and frankly being in a small town most people know your business and what church you go to or if you don’t go. How you live is on display. Overtime people know if you ring true or not. I do realize people here identify me with my faith but I don’t feel bold like I see some of my contemporaries being bold. Those that I see as bold came to Christ as adults and a radical change marks their lives. I have known Him since I was a child and haven’t veered far from that commitment. I’m having to think here how boldness is displayed. But yes I want to be bolder and I do trust Him to accomplish that through me as pleases Him.
8. How was John the Baptist bold?
From day one John the Baptist was Holy Spirit led but he wasn’t without sin like Jesus. But he was different. I think he was bold because he had a purpose. I believe through his aged and very godly parents he was given a strong sense of purpose early on with an understanding his life had been ordained by God and for God’s purposes.
So many honest and thoughtful responses here, Bev.
I identify with this: I think for myself I am often just too self aware and it hinders me in being fearful and concerned about the response of others. The more aware I am of my Lord the less I fear people.
I don’t think it should feel “forced” but often there is a moment when the wind comes up and it takes boldness to hoist the sail. This is what I have learned and it is wonderful.
5. Read Luke 1:72-75. What is the purpose of our being rescued from our enemies?
Our souls were in danger , we were dead in our sins . Sin was our enemy , it kept us from relationship with God. Sin always interferes with relationship.
The purpose is twofold , I am saved to be a witness about His salvation. Not only salvation for eternity but also the saving here on earth that He daily provides. That he did not leave us here on earth to fend for ourselves but He is here holding us and leading us forward until our time here is done.
I need to remember that it is only Jesus that saves , I’m just a seed planter. Brennan Manning says in The Ragamuffin Gospel ” The ministry of evangelization is an extraordinary opportunity of showing gratitude to Jesus by passing on His gospel of grace to others. ”
How conscious are you of this calling? Explain.
Very. It is as Dee said ” I don’t think it should feel “forced” but often there is a moment when the wind comes up and it takes boldness to hoist the sail. This is what I have learned and it is wonderful.”
God is in control but we need to be willing to open our mouths and allow the Spirit to speak. I know the Greatest love that ever was and I want people to know the same truth that I missed out on all those years of not knowing who He truly is .
He is the Love that our world is longing for . He is the Hope that daily restores our souls and equips us to run the race that He has set before us.
5. Read Luke 1:72-75. What is the purpose of our being rescued from our enemies? How conscious are you of this calling? Explain.
“…that we,. . . might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.”
This is an interesting question. Consciousness of God’s purpose for my life depends on my surrendering to Him. It’s a moment by moment choice.
I am pondering the above passage and look forward to our discussion. All of the disciples except for John were martyred. Likewise, Jesus said as we serve Him, a sword will divide us from those who do not love Him, even in our own families. So what does it mean that we can serve Him without fear?
He is the most precious and valuable One of all. He is never going to break His promises to us. I have no fear of losing the thing my whole life is staked on because “I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day.”
6. What do you think it means that we can serve Him wholeheartedly, no matter how hostile our surroundings, and not have fear? (Look at these passages for insight and ask Him for wisdom before you answer: (Acts 4:25-30 and Romans 8:36-39)
It just means that nothing can take Jesus’ love or forgiveness from me. He’s my rescuer! He’s my treasure.
When people laugh at me, deride me, exclude me, gossip about me, their painful intentions are reminders of my own wickedness and sin when Jesus saved me. They don’t see their desperate need, but I know how I used to live–just like them.
His love is my life and He promises to never take it away from me. I can live without fear.
7. How have you been bold for Christ and how could you trust Him more to be bolder?
I haven’t been persecuted or imprisoned. I read about fellow believers who are, on the Voice of the Martyrs website. When my classmates make fun of me for going to church or call me a doormat for not divorcing my husband, I think of sisters and brothers in Christ living in the Middle East right now. I don’t get invited to parties or included in lunch get-togethers. There are lots of “fun” things I’m missing out on in school and it hurts. But I’m praying for my classmates. I’m getting to know them individually and praying for their lives and needs. I don’t like to build relationships with rude people, but that’s just what Jesus did (and does) for me. It’s about obedience in the moment, a struggle that’s the reality of this broken world. I do pray that I will trust Him more to be obedient in every circumstance. There is pain when I obey and am rejected by others and there is pain when I do nothing and have to face Him with my willful disobedience. It shouldn’t be a hard choice to make, but sometimes it really is. I’m ashamed of that. But even then, Jesus is faithful to restore and renew my heart–He is so kind and patient with me. I would like to be more like Him!
8. How was John the Baptist bold?
He was different from everyone in his community. He didn’t conform to society. He gave up his whole life for Jesus.
6. What do you think it means that we can serve Him wholeheartedly, no matter how hostile our surroundings, and not have fear? (Look at these passages for insight and ask Him for wisdom before you answer: (Acts 4:25-30 and Romans 8:36-39)
I guess it comes down to this ” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Hebrews 13:6 ” No matter what I have Jesus , my identity is wrapped up in Him . When I feel alone , there is Jesus , unloved , Jesus loves me , shamed ? He took that at the cross , afraid , He says ” fear not ” and by His Spirit I am calmed. The list goes on … what do I need ? Jesus is the answer. Do I do this perfectly ? No , but He is good to remind me to seek Him and all these things will be added.
7. How have you been bold for Christ and how could you trust Him more to be bolder?
I don’t think I’ve been bold when I think of the Coptic Christians and the Syrian Christians , everything pales in comparison to what they are going through for their faith
8. How was John the Baptist bold?
I wonder if its obedience that makes us bold. John did what he was born to do , as foretold by Zechariah. Maybe it’s in the obedience that we are bold? When we are who Jesus says we are ? I know that John was filled with the Holy Spirit and that all power came from God. How do we get to that place ?
C. What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
“that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us”
We are ultimately already saved from our enemy through the Cross. God has won the battle, and no one can snatch us from His hand, yet we still suffer from the effects of our sin, this fallen world, and the enemy’s attacks. When Christ comes again, we will be completely saved from this world and taken to our true Home where there will be no sickness, no tears, and everything will be made new.
D. Praise God for a time recently that He has rescued you from the enemy who breathes lies, brings despair, and enslaves.
When I face personal trials, I have a sinful default of thinking I have done something wrong or God is upset with me (punishing me). While I KNOW this is completely false, and as Dee says “SO not the Gospel!”, I still tend towards self-blame. Yesterday I was inspired by Spurgeon’s words in one of his many sermons on prayer, to pray God’s promises back to Him. I found an incredible resource of over 2500 promises from Scripture, and as I began reading it tonight–I came to Ezekiel 20:44 “And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I deal with you for my name’s sake, not according to your evil ways, nor according to your corrupt deeds, O house of Israel, declares the Lord GOD.” I couldn’t hold back the tears. I felt Him directly speak to me, and while I have heard this truth many times before, something tonight just clicked–it was so personal. So I wrote it down in my notebook of Scriptures. Then I began catching up on my emails and one of the devotions I subscribe to (desiringGod) referenced the same verse. God wanted to make sure I really heard Him this time! The enemy loves to breathe his lies on me and had brought me to a place of despair–but my God rescued me with His Word. He will never treat us as our sin deserves–and to know this is to know who He is. If I doubt this truth then I do not acknowledge the God he is, the perfect Father who loves me with all mercy and grace.
We hardly ever hear quotes from Ezekiel and this one is priceless, Lizzy:
Ezekiel 20:44 “And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I deal with you for my name’s sake, not according to your evil ways, nor according to your corrupt deeds, O house of Israel, declares the Lord GOD.”
Lizzy, thank you for sharing the verse in Ezekiel 20:44 -what a promise that God won’t deal with us as our sins deserve but for His name’s sake! That so give me a perspective on my tendencies to give in to my idol of self-righteousness or self-blaming. Please share the resource that you found of the 2500 promises from Scripture.
Bing–just saw this from you. Here’s the pdf “Take Words With You” from the Desiring God website. There is also a hard copy on amazon for purchase. https://cdn.desiringgod.org/pdf/blog/3183_TWWY_3rd%20edition_online%20version.pdf
Love you dear sister!
6. What do you think it means that we can serve Him wholeheartedly, no matter how hostile our surroundings, and not have fear? (Look at these passages for insight and ask Him for wisdom before you answer: (Acts 4:25-30 and Romans 8:36-39)
Tha bond between Christ and me is strong just as the bond between a mother and her baby is strong. It binds us together and nothing can separate us.
7. How have you been bold for Christ and how could you trust Him more to be bolder?
Last night I found found myself in the perfect position to have a serious conversation with my son about some very serious issues. We were stuck in the car with a dead battery and waiting on my husband to come rescue us. I was overcome last weekend on my drive home from the south, that I should speak to each of my kids about their faith, or lack thereof. I was disappointed in the result of the conversation though; I never expected my youngest to say he was not an atheist but also not a Christian 😔. He’s the one who went to Christian school! I asked him to at least consider what I said and he said he would. I told him I was concerned for his salvation. I said I wanted to see him in heaven and through my studies I have learned that the only way to heaven is through Jesus. I tried. However, this awful world has taken my son and twisted the truth for him. He actually said he believes that even Satans position should be considered and not just dismissed; tolerated, as if the evil one has a point! That’s the wishy-washy tolerance people are touting these days in our world! Weaklings who won’t take a stand in fear of hurting someone’s feelings! I think Dee, that is what is happening in the south with Christmas. I guess I will continue to pray for this one. I will say at least we conversed, and he has heard my plea.
Laura, You sowed the seed of truth and he knows now his mother cares about his soul. God will work in time. And in answer to prayer. God bless you for your obedience to your Lord.
I pray those words spoken will not return void, as He promises.
Laura, I appreciate you sharing about your conversation with your son. I will be visiting my daughter in Seattle and I am praying for boldness to ask her where she is at in her relationship with God. She struggles so much with anxiety and depression and has been resistant to God for a long time. The enemy has a stronghold in her life with lies and deception-she doesn’t believe God loves her. Like Susan, I often feel “frozen” when it comes to conversing with my daughter about her faith. I so long for that vibrant faith I saw in her when she was younger.
9. Read Luke 1:76-77 and list what God’s calling for this child was.
John’s calling was to :
“go before the Lord to prepare his ways”
“to give knowledge of salvation to his people
in the forgiveness of their sins,”
10. Read Luke 3:7-20 and describe how John lived out his calling. How could he serve God without fear?
John clearly preached a repentance from sin. The people were convicted of their sinful living and he told them how to change from self serving ways to living for God when they were convicted. He condemned those who came bringing their religious ways and religious standing but not wanting a personal God Who got into their business so to speak.
I think John being the son of a Levitical priest would have had a front row seat growing up to the hypocritical ways of the religious elite of his day. He would have been taught the scriptures by his parents and understood well God’s plan for his people. That alone would have given him courage in his message and with the anointing of the Holy Spirit he could serve God and speak without fear.
1. What stands out to you from the above and why?
It is a new thought to me that during those 9 months of inability to speak, or hear, that Zechariah was repenting….perhaps for his doubting the angel’s message, his unbelief. I think it was on this blog that Dee pointed out that when the angel said to him that God had heard his prayer, and then that his wife would have a child, that along with the prayers offered for the people, perhaps Zechariah had been talking to God about his wife’s barrenness. Maybe. Or, had he been praying for the Messiah to come?
Secondly, I did not know that R .C. Sproul had died. I used to listen to his radio program often in the car in the mornings….he always stretched me with his teaching!
And, the “carnival atmosphere” at the convention. As I get older (oh, am I turning into a ‘grumpy old woman’ already) I am more disturbed by certain things I see. For example, when I walk past the junior and high school rooms at church in the morning, there’s loud music blasting (Christian music, but…) and it seems like a “carnival atmosphere”, and I wonder, is that how we have to attract our youth to church? Our sons went to a parochial school (Catholic), and would go to a non-denominational church with me on Sundays and I remember how Ryan would tell me that in the junior high room, he would stand against the wall and watch as the boys played football, throwing balls around and into the walls, and he said it didn’t seem respectful to do that in church. Maybe I sound legalistic, but if God is holy, then shouldn’t the atmosphere at church reflect that?
2. How do you think you would have felt if you were in the room when Zechariah began to prophesy that the Christ was imminent? Why?
I don’t know….often when Jesus told the disciples something profound, they didn’t understand what He meant. I might have been the same….hearing the words and thinking, what?
3. As an overview, read Zechariah’s whole prayer of prophetic praise (Luke 1:68-79) and write down a few things that the Messiah will do that are meaningful to you. Which of these have happened already in part?
He has come and has redeemed His people…..that’s what we’re celebrating at every Christmas. Our Redeemer came to earth!
God has given us the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of our sins, BECAUSE OF HIS TENDER MERCY….God is so merciful to shed light into our hearts so that we can see and understand how to be made right with Him, because He is merciful, and tender, as a father with his child.
Again, because of the tender mercy of God, the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death….death and losing someone you love is like being in a very dark place; how we need His light to shine hope into our situation.
Was thinking of you, missing you, and happy to see you this morning, Susan!
Thank you, Dee. I’ve just had a hard time getting it together this Advent…it’s nice to be missed, though!
No pressure — just know how loved you are.
Susan, thinking of you these days and your Dad as well. Love this…”how we need His light to shine hope into our situation.” So true and comforting.
9. Read Luke 1:76-77 and list what God’s calling for this child was.
“the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins.”
10. Read Luke 3:7-20 and describe how John lived out his calling. How could he serve God without fear?
John called out sinful behavior in others. He told people to repent. He talked about Jesus and the good news of salvation.
Without fear: Men are different than women, I think. John was given a purpose from Most High God. He did it–carrying out his mission until he was killed for it. John maintained laser-like focus on his purpose, which came from his God. So he kept returning to God in his heart, everyday pursuit of God’s plan for him. I think he was a broken human like everyone is, but John’s life was so intertwined with his purpose as the “way-preparer” that he might have had a different perspective on fear of man than I do. This is where I disconnect from his life a bit, while still trying to maintain a teachable heart.
His ultimate sacrifice and devoted pursuit of God’s mission are insightful for me about the importance of purity of heart before God. I see tremendous strength in what he did and want to grow in that strength in my life. But I have no singleness of purpose in any area of my life, meaning the external elements of daily tasks. John’s life would have surely looked different if he had a spouse and children to care for, etc. There’s a delightful satisfaction in calling people out for sinful behavior. Proclaiming the pharisees a “brood of vipers” was not very politically correct. I do not have this freedom as John did. The OT prophets who expose their hearts to us are a bit more relatable for me, so I use them when I think of how John lived without fear. He lived without fear because he lived his whole life looking to God in every moment.
Hi all, I’m back again! 🙂 I had 3 good days in Mexico with my daughter & the Lord continued to set me free from co-dependent ways! Praising Him for rescuing me from “the enemy who breathes lies, brings despair & enslaves” & for bringing closeness & love & joy.
I have done the study but will just answer the most recent questions here: “What is the purpose of our being rescued from our enemies?”That we may serve Him fearlessly & show His mercy & compassion. Fear has been my biggest enemy. I am easily intimidated & people close to me have used that to manipulate & control me. The Lord has truly been setting me free of fear over the last years, bit by bit & giving me more awareness of His love & tenderness for me. I can still go there, but y His grace I want to be more bold for Him & let His perfect Love cast out ALL Fear!
“How have you been bold for Christ & how can u trust Him more to be bolder?” It is always about surrender to Him, one moment at a time, to spend time with Him & bask in His love for me, His power to set me free. I have been reaching out to my neighbor Robyn, over this last year. She has been devastated by a divorce& family break up. The Lord has truly given me such love for her & I can speak freely to her about my faith. She loves me to pray for her, but hasn’t taken the step of surrendering to Jesus yet. I believe it is coming & the Lord is not in a rush. He just wants me to show her how much He loves & hears her. I would like to be bold enough at the right time to invite her to pray with me & ask Jesus in! Also to be bold & looking for fresh opportunities with my husband & family, where I have been silenced & “struck dumb” with fear of hostility & backlash.
I love how Hannah prayed “my mouth is no longer silent, for it is opened wide over my enemies, because I rejoice in Your salvation” (1Sam 2:1) May my mouth be opened wide in trust & joy & boldness for Jesus!
Jenny , Thank you so much for sharing and for encouragement. The Lord has truly been setting me free of fear over the last years, bit by bit & giving me more awareness of His love & tenderness for me. I can still go there, but y His grace I want to be more bold for Him & let His perfect Love cast out ALL Fear!
Sometimes I forget and I think that I’m alone in this struggle , it’s always a blessing to be reminded that its His love that casts out my fear.
Jenny, I really “get” what you’re saying as my life and family situations are very similar to yours. I often fear being “frozen out” with one of my sons if I try to talk to him about God. And I too am easily intimidated by people close to me, and often feel manipulated and controlled.
Susan, yes I prayed for your family as I wrote that post. We are in similar situations & I understand the struggle! May our tongues be loosened with boldness only as the Holy Spirit leads us, otherwise may our lives day to day show His reality & His grace & mercy! Hugs xxx
Merry Christmas Jenny, and thank you for praying. My daughter went to church with me yesterday and our pastor talked about 3 different responses to the good news of a Savior being born: hostility, apathy, or worship. On the way to the car I prayed okay Lord, I know she heard; I am going to keep my mouth shut and You do what only You can do. I am going to pray for your family right now.
8. How was John the Baptist bold?
He seemed a crazy man with his living in the desert, eating locusts and such. He was overcome by his duty to tell everyone about the Savior.
9. Read Luke 1:76-77 and list what God’s calling for this child was.
John was to go before Jesus to prepare the people. He was to tell them of salvation in the forgiveness of their sins.
10. Read Luke 3:7-20 and describe how John lived out his calling. How could he serve God without fear?
He was a bold messenger, as I stated above. He explained that the people needed to get their lives in order. They should share their possessions and not steal from each other. They were to be content with their situations. He ended up in jail. I guess he could be bold because he knew that God was with him? Maybe he knew the stories and prophecies from the Old Testement since his dad was a priest? I’m not really sure here.
11. Read Luke 1:78-79
A. What will Jesus do?
Jesus will visit us from heaven, as a baby, and bring light to the darkness; forgiving our sins and bringing peace to the world.
B. How has He done this for you in the past year or even this Advent?
I am struck by the baby this Advent season. It is so sweet that God came down as a baby. Mothers have a tight bond with their babies. I bet Mary savored the smells and physical contact with Jesus. I have babies in my care these days and oh! how sweet it is to see their growing each day! Getting new teeth, learning new words, cusping on walking; so sweet. He has brought joy and peace to us in a situation full of pain. Thank You Lord Jesus! Thank You Oh Dayspring!
Laura, I took my dad to a remembrance service last evening and the minister passed out blank cards to write down names of those to pray for, and I wrote down your daughter Sarah as a young lady who needs to come home to God.
Interesting how things come full circle….this is the church that my grandma (my mom’s mom) used to take me to when I would spend the night with her; the church my parents were married in and attended in their early married life; my sister was married there, and my dad contacted the current minister when my mom died and he spoke at the memorial service. My dad has wanted to start attending church there again, and there are actually a handful of people there who knew and remembered my parents from when they went there as it is an older congregation, and my co-worker and friend Beth attends there and says my grandma’s name sounds very familiar to her.
Thank you Susan, I appreciate you thinking of Sarah. Your former church sounds like a comforting place for you; that is nice. I hope your Christmas is peaceful. Take care!
4. Read Luke 1:67-71
A. What is the first thing Zechariah praises God for in verse 68?
He praises God because “He has come and has redeemed His people.” I noted the tense of this – this isn’t future tense, as in He IS coming and WILL redeem….it’s already happened.
B. The word “visited” is like “Immanuel” – God is with us. But using a concordance, find another time or two when the same concept of God coming down and visiting us is expressed in the gospels. Does this give you any additional light? If so, explain.
Luke 7:16: “God has come to help His people.”
Matthew 25:36: “I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
My expository dictionary says the word “visit” means “to look upon, care for, exercise oversight; signifies to visit with help, of the act of God.” My NIV translates Luke 1:68 as “He has come”, instead of using the word visited, but the big idea seems to be why God comes, or visits, us – it is to be with us so that He can care for us, help us, and watch out for us.
C. What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
God will save us from our enemies, from all who hate us. Partially fulfilled – I think it’s because in the first coming of Christ He defeated our two great enemies – Satan and death, and maybe even I could include sin as our enemy, too….the enemy that lives inside of us. Partially fulfilled and awaiting complete fulfillment because we still have to live in this fallen world where bad things can and do happen to us, and there is still pain and suffering, and we still struggle with our sinful nature.
D. Praise God for a time recently where He has rescued you from the enemy who breathes lies, brings despair, and enslaves.
Lord, thank you for rescuing me from the lies of the enemy who accuses me of my selfishness, my self-centeredness, my mistakes, the times I have failed to love well. The enemy tells me “you didn’t do it perfectly”, and no, I didn’t. But I am not perfect, only You are. But Lord, when I failed big time, You gave me another chance to do things differently, and You directed me in what to say and do.
5. Read Luke 1:72-75. What is the purpose of our being rescued from our enemies? How conscious are you of this calling? Explain.
Is it to enable us to serve Him without fear (in holiness and righteousness)? I guess I haven’t been conscious of this calling. There is a woman in my Sunday school class who I believe exemplifies serving God without fear….many years ago she traveled to Ghana with a dream, and not much else….today there is an orphanage that is expanding with several “homes” being built, and house mothers for the children, and a school, and she, a woman, goes into men’s prisons while she is there and teaches the Bible to Muslims. She goes into villages where they haven’t heard about God yet….and at the House of Hope, her orphanage/school, their goal is to train up these children so that they can go back into their villages some day and share the gospel.
Oh how I long to be set free of clinging fear….I fear I’ll mess-up, or say the wrong thing, or be rejected or challenged in a way that will make me back down. How many times I fail to speak up. I guess I fear loss of approval, or loss of my comfort and security. I even fear the fear of failure.
Love the story of the women who made such a different in Ghana!
4. Read Luke 1:67-71
A. What is the first thing Zechariah praises God for in verse 68?
He has come to his people and redeemed them.
1. In Luke 7: 11-17 when Jesus heals the Widow’s son who died. After her son rose fear seized the people who witnessed it… and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”
2. Matthew 25: 34. ..I was in prison and you came to visit me.
-That Hallelujah He came to redeem once and for all-for all our sin- and He is with believers via His Spirit in us for He comes to heal, provide for, and nurture us through one another. For how we love one another is evidence of Him living in us.
C. What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
“we will be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us”
It has been partially fulfilled by the cross for satan lost. In the end satan can’t have us for we who are His are sealed with His spirit, wrapped in His righteousness. We are One with Him. While we are here we will still suffer from the lies and taunts of the evil one. It is part of living in a fallen world and having a sin nature though forgiven is still there. But in the second advent, He will remove baal from our lips and restore our fallen world-make new. There will be no more idolatry, no more suffering, no more tears, no more desert times when we suffer in backing away from God. No more longing for that full on intimacy with Him for we will be face to face.
Rebecca — I love this:
“A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”
11. Read Luke 1:78-79
A. What will Jesus do?
“to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
This promise of what Jesus will do is so full of meaning and hope! Jesus not only gives light but He is the light and He brings meaning and purpose to life. He gives direction to our lives and the result is His peace. He himself is our peace.
B. How has He done this for you in the past year or even this Advent?
This morning we are in Oklahoma City on our way to Texas to spend Christmas with our oldest son and his family. Last Spring when we made this trip down to visit them our relationship was very strained and not in a good place. But through prayer and a confrontation that was emotionally painful God in his grace began a work of reconciliation. God brought light into the situation and revealed understanding on both their part and ours that has allowed forgiveness and healing from years of hurt. There was a point last Spring that I just wanted to cone home and not go back. But for Jesus and his answered prayers. Since our being together in August for our 50th Anniversary and again at home in Nebraska for Thanksgiving there is peace between us again. They invited us for Christmas and I have joy and peace in going back down. There are many details but I know what has taken place for good this year is because of Him. My heart is full of praise for Jesus and his good work.
I love this story of answered prayer for peace with those you so love!
I just read the paragraph after question #5, which I answered yesterday. Oh, “a sword will divide us from those who do not love him, even in our own families.” So what does it mean we can serve Him without fear?
I’ve experienced that “sword” in my own family, and, from reading comments I see others have as well. Sometimes, the sword isn’t that they say something negative, but it’s when you just can’t have meaningful, spiritual conversation with them because they don’t believe, don’t care, just aren’t interested. There’s a closeness that you could share on a whole other level, that you know you can’t have. And, sometimes it is the “snarky” comment aimed at you, because of your faith. I have one son who says things like “why can’t we have a regular relationship without the ‘god-stuff’ constantly.” What is a “regular relationship”? I know you don’t have to insert God into every conversation, but, I can tell you that when my mom was dying for 3 days, I didn’t make small talk, or talk about her favorite baseball team, the Red Sox. I only hope that she somehow heard me. I don’t understand (but at same time, I do) why people think that God, or spiritual conversation, will put you further apart, when in reality, it will draw you even closer.
6. What do you think it means that we can serve him wholeheartedly, no matter how hostile our surroundings, and not have fear? (Look at these passages for insight and ask Him for wisdom before you answer: (Acts 4:25-30 and Romans 8:36-39)
In Acts, Peter and John had been arrested and commanded not to speak or teach about Jesus anymore. Psalm 2 is quoted in this passage….”the kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against His Anointed One”. They describe how Jesus was plotted against, yet, “they did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen”. So really, they had no power at all (over Jesus), and they had no power over Peter and John. Peter and John trusted that their lives were already mapped out by God, and what would happen or not happen to them was already predetermined. So, they made up their minds to be even bolder. They did not fear mere men.
In Romans, Paul writes that despite any and every hardship, “we are more than conquerors”. It’s a different perspective than what I have about hardship, which is usually to feel defeated. And, I know that I don’t face what Paul and the early Christians faced: terrible persecution and death. Nothing, and no one, can separate me from the love of God through Christ. We are conquerors because He already has won. I think these passages give you a different perspective too on those who may give you a hard time….they are the ones who are not free, who are not really the victors in the battle, but they don’t know it.
Your description reminds me of Sara Grove’s song, “Conversations.” I do grieve you do not have that Susan — and I know you also fear for their eternity. We continue to pray and surrender with you.
Susan, I totally “get it” & feel the same way with my kids & husband. May the Lord do what only He can do, & may we be his vessels, even if silent, to show His reality & love for them! Standing with you sister 🙂
Much late but thankful I can catch up some today!
Tuesday: He Has Visited His People!
Please, please, prepare your heart with this:
I always have loved this song and many other songs of Michael Card.
4. Read Luke 1:67-71
A. What is the first thing Zechariah praises God for in verse 68?
That He has visited and redeemed His people
Ruth 1:6
Then she arose with her daughters-in-law that she might return from the land of Moab, for she had heard in the land of Moab that the LORD had visited His people in giving them food.
Psalm 65:9
You visit the earth and cause it to overflow; You greatly enrich it; The stream of God is full of water; You prepare their grain, for thus You prepare the earth.
Luke 7:16
Fear gripped them all, and they began glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited His people!”
My thoughts: when God visits His people, He brings blessings. And the greatest blessing of all is Jesus.
C. What does Zechariah say is going to happen according to verse 71? How has this been partially fulfilled by the first Advent, and how will it be completely fulfilled in the second Advent?
We have been saved from our enemies. First Advent-Jesus saved us from our first enemy, spiritual death and in the Second advent, the enemy of physical death.
D. Praise God for a time recently that He has rescued you from the enemy who breathes lies, brings despair, and enslaves.
Lord, you know my struggles and I thank you for the wonderful promises in your Word which has rescued me time and time again from the clutches of the enemy.
5. Read Luke 1:72-75. What is the purpose of our being rescued from our enemies? How conscious are you of this calling? Explain.
That we might serve Him without fear. Often times, I am crippled by fear. I know I shouldn’t but I am. Fear of disapproval, strain in relationships, I don’t know what to say, etc. Lame reasons. And perhaps I have taken for granted that God will always be patient with me and those I love? Or I say, Lord, send somebody else to warn them or to talk them. They will not listen to me. Who am I?
I am pondering the above passage and look forward to our discussion. All of the disciples except for John were martyred. Likewise, Jesus said as we serve Him, a sword will divide us from those who do not love Him, even in our own families. So what does it mean that we can serve Him without fear?
6. What do you think it means that we can serve Him wholeheartedly, no matter how hostile our surroundings, and not have fear? (Look at these passages for insight and ask Him for wisdom before you answer: (Acts 4:25-30 and Romans 8:36-39)
Acts 4 the boldness of the believers after John and Peter came back from healing a crippled man and being threatened by the priests.
To pray for boldness
To believe that “everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will.” We can be fearless knowing this.
I would like to add to seek the Holy Spirit as vs 31 says ..they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they preached the Word of God with boldness.
Romans 8
In my NLT version …nothing can separate us from God’s love-not our fears for today, worries of tomorrow not even the powers of hell.
Thoughts: God will preserve me as I boldly proclaim Him. And regardless of what the other person’s response is, God’s love for me will be the same. I get to be a part of His kingdom building and He will equip me with what I need as I obey.
