IT CAN BE SUCH A RICH TIME,
BRINGING LIFE FROM THE BARREN SOD
WINTER INTO SPRING
THE RICHEST TIMES ON THIS BLOG HAVE BEEN DURING LENT!
WHY?
IT’S THE UPSIDE DOWN THINKING OF GOD
FOR IN DYING, WE FIND LIFE
THE THING WE FEAR THE MOST
IS THE SECRET TO SETTING US FREE
WE ARE IN SLAVERY TO OURSELVES
TO OUR IDOLS
TO THE LIES OF THE ENEMY
BUT CHRIST LONGS TO SET US FREE
BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE
THERE WILL BE A BATTLE
AS JESUS BATTLED SATAN FOR FORTY DAYS
WE WILL BATTLE HIS LIES FOR FORTY DAYS
BUT AS JESUS CLUNG TO THE WORD
SO WILL WE, AND WHEN WE FAIL, WE WILL LOOK TO THE CROSS
ALLOWING THE GOSPEL TO TRANSFORM US FOR
LENT IS NOT SO MUCH ABOUT FORFEITING BUT ABOUT FORMATION
If you have never observed Lent, or if you observed it by giving up candy or meat on Fridays but never quite knew why, this will be a rich time for you. It begins on Ash Wednesday, which is Wednesday of this week, and continues to Easter. Not counting Sundays — that is forty days — paralleling the forty days Jesus was in the wilderness battling Satan. Often people do “give up” something for Lent, but the reason has often been lost. We turn away from something so that we will have the time to be with Jesus, or so that His life might bloom in us. We die that we might have life.
For those of you who have been sojourning with us for a while, or for those of you who have read my book Idol Lies or have studied “gospel transformation,” in a study, you know that what gets in our way of intimacy with the Lord is our heart idols. Instead of running to the Lord for comfort, approval, and security, we run to one of his gifts and turn it into a god. We may say, for example, that God is our refuge and we know He loves us, but in reality, when we are longing for refuge we run to friends, Facebook, or food. We are enslaved, as Galatians says, to “nongods.” This is not the gospel way of life. It is the opposite.
So the big goal this Lent will be to replace our heart idols with the Lord. But a smaller goal to help us move in that direction, is to replace the time we’ve spent feeding our idols with being in His presence. For example, you may choose any of these or another plan:
- Replace an hour or all of nightly television with this study and the supplemental reading
- Replace three lunches with three walks listening to mp-3 sermons
- Replace Facebook time with endeavoring to seek God’s face through worship music and praying the Word
- Replace staying up late and sleeping in with getting up and being with Him before your day begins
WE WANT TO KNOW HIM AND THE POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION. WE WANT TO EXPERIENCE HIS BEAUTY AND HIS BEAUTY IN US THIS LENT. THE ONLY WAY THAT CAN HAPPEN IS GOSPEL TRANSFORMATION — BEING CHANGED FROM THE INSIDE OUT.
This year I am so excited about where God is leading — we are going to consider how the gospel is not just the ABC’s of Christianity (the way in) but the A to Z of Christianity — (the way to live in victorious intimacy with Christ every day). As we apply the gospel to all of life and begin to plumb its depths, it will affect how we mother, how we face suffering, how we overcome our besetting sins, and most of all, our intimacy with God. I have only come to truly begin to grasp this in the last ten years. Before that, if you would have asked me if I understood the gospel, I would have been miffed. Of course! But now I so understand what Tim Keller means when he says:
If you think you understand the gospel, that proves you don’t, and if you say, “Oh I hardly understand it,” that means you are getting it.[1]
For some of you, especially in the first few weeks, much will be review, but that is good, for as Martin Luther says, “We must beat this into our heads every day.” The default mode of the human heart is idolatry, either trusting in His gifts or in ourselves — because we don’t really trust His love enough to fall into it. We must keep resetting our hearts to the gospel.
Together we are going to seek His presence, turning from our idols and running toward Him. We will share, on this blog, what we are learning, what we are questioning, and how He is meeting us.
HOW DOES THIS LENTEN STUDY WORK?
This Sunday through Tuesday, we’ll get ready. Beginnings are always a bit messy, and we have an enemy, but I and others are praying you will not only start but stay with it! You don’t have to stay with the suggested time line — in fact this week especially, you’d be wise to work ahead.
I would like you to watch two short (under seven minutes) testimonies from women who found victory over a besetting sin, and also read a post from Ann VosKamp about Lent. Prayerfully consider what you will give up so that you have the time to do this study diligently. You might, as Rebecca did, give up television after supper. Or you might, as Rachael did, give up most of her internet activities for Lent. (But not this one!) You may decide to skip Starbucks or a weekly lunch so you can buy the MP3 sermons I am going to suggest (some are free, but some are 2.50) and have the time to listen to them. (The Keller sermon money goes to help the suffering, who are many, in New York City. ) Idols cannot be removed, only replaced. So our purpose is always intimacy with God in our sacrifices during Lent. In these next three days pray about how you can carve out the time (or the possible 2.50 a week) to better understand how to apply the gospel to your life. By Ash Wednesday, you should have a plan.
If you are new, on my homepage on the right click on the Getting Started and follow those directions. Identify yourself by more than just a first name. You may want to be April from Baltimore or, as some women from my Kansas City church might be joining us, you may want to be Melissa@GPC. (Gashland Presbyterian Church) Some women don’t comment on the blog at all, but keep their answers in a notebook. There are wonderful women on this blog and you are free to have discussions with one another, pray for one another, or not. I am diligently trying to read all the comments, particularly when I see questions about the text or misunderstandings — and there are a few women who have been with us a long time, are grounded in the Word, who help me. And all of you are free to jump in and encourage one another. We see better together than we do alone. Together we find warmth, like many logs on a fire, instead of a lonely log dying. That is the beauty of Christian fellowship — and yes, it can happen on a blog. We are experiencing God here. Idols have been demolished, sins overcome, and grief subdued. You are also free to disagree here. This is a very loving group.
Beginning this Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, we will start our study by looking at some basics on the gospel way of life. Then next Sunday, and every Sunday, there will be a new post that will help you peer into the gospel and see how it might be applied to every problem you face. Please pray for God’s quickening on us all!
Sunday: Icebreakers
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
Monday: Testimonies from Rebecca and Rachael:
If you haven’t seen these testimonies (They are from the Idol Lies video curriculum) please watch them and comment on them. If you already have seen them, then you don’t need to watch, but answer the questions. (However, I think they are profound and worth re-watching.)
Rebecca’s story: (This is our Rebecca!)
3. How was Rebecca feeding her comfort idol? How is she replacing her comfort idol? What did God do in her life?
Rachael’s story (This Rachael has been a silent blogger, but will be joining us on the blog during Lent.)
4. How was Rachael feeding her control idol? How is she replacing her control idol? What did God do in her life?
Be praying about what you will “give up” and how you will be replacing it with God. Think about when and where you will do your study, come up with an occasional 2.50 to spend on sermons that are not free, and how you can get the most from this study. I’ll ask you to share your plan on Ash Wednesday.
Skip ahead to Tuesday if you have time.
Tuesday: What’s Lent All About?
Read Ann Voskamp’s discussion about Lent up to her “book list”: Link
5. Ann said Lent isn’t so much about forfeiting but about formation. One needs to be dispossessed of the possessions that possess — before one can be possessed of God. What possesses — obsesses you? Food? Facebook? Television? Texting? (This will help you decide what to give up that you might replace it with God.)
6. Ann failed the very first night, showing her her depravity, and leading her to the cross. She said: A failing lent? It is a good Lent because this Lenten Lament of my sin — it is preparing me for the Easter Joy of my Savior. How will you respond when you fail?
7. What else stood out to you from Ann’s post?
Lenten Book List
I am suggesting you also read, during Lent, one of the following books which will give additional support to living a gospel-transformed life. If you act now, you can probably get them through inter-library loan within a few weeks. The first is basic — if you haven’t read it, then this is your book during Lent:
THE PRODIGAL GOD by Tim Keller:
Watch this two minute trailer to whet your taste:
This is a small book, but a paradigm changing book on the gospel-centered life. You can also listen to eight free sermons on The Prodigal God by going to this link and finding the sermons on Luke 15.
If you have already read or listened to The Prodigal God, then choose one of these books as supplemental Lenten reading:
Bread and Wine Readings for Easter with selections from C. S. Lewis, Luther, Bonhoeffer, John Donne…
WHAT’S SO AMAZING ABOUT GRACE? by Philip Yancey.
In Yancey’s classic he says, “Grace is amazing because it’s not natural.” Gospel-transformed living is not natural — it’s supernatural. The natural default of the human heart is idolatry. This is what keeps us from forgiving, from loving well, from the peace God longs for us to have. Grace is another way to describe the gospel – and the gospel is the only remedy to our heart idols.
IDOL LIES by Dee Brestin
We are essentially going on from the concepts in Idol Lies, though we will review — but if you haven’t read it, you will find it helpful to do so. I am indebted to Tim Keller, Martin Luther, David Powlison, and so many others who have helped me understand idols of the heart.
ONE THOUSAND GIFTS by Ann Voskamp
When God changes us, He moves us from guilt, to grace, to gratitude. A transformed heart is a grateful heart. A gospel transformed heart is no longer trying to earn God’s approval, for it is resting in His grace (another way to describe the gospel) and responding with gratitude. But since the default of the human heart is idolatry, then continually being aware of His presence through His blessings, or as Ann calls it, “living eucharisto” can help switch that default mode of idolatry back to gospel transformation.
If you have read all of the above, I also recommend these excellent books that are related to gospel transformation:
Soul Idolatry: What Keeps Men Out of Heaven (David Clarkson)
Spiritual Depression (Martyn Lloyd-Jones)
Grace-Based Parenting (Elyse Fitzpatrick)
A Grace Disguised (Jerry Sittser)
The Gospel in Life (Tim Keller)
Go see the movie Les Miserables while it is still in the theatres!
And an easy reading extra:
Pearl in the Sand (Tessa Afshar — light historical fiction in which the author demonstrates an understanding of gospel transformation) Our own Nanci recommended it and I think you’ll like it. But this is not to be your main supplemental reading book!
8. What book will you get for your supplemental reading — and why?
Skip ahead to Wednesday if you have time.
ASH WEDNESDAY — WE OFFICIALLY BEGIN!
Many churches will have a service tonight in which ashes are placed on the foreheads of believers to remind them that they are dust and to dust they will return. This life is so short and we tend to be so earthbound in our perspective. When we are earthbound, we become enslaved to our idols. During Lent we want to set our affections on things above with particular diligence.
9. How is the Lord leading you to approach Lent? Is there something that you tend to run to instead of to Him? How will you replace it? When, where, and how will you meet with Him?
Ann Voskamp said: “I can’t seem to follow through on giving up for Lent, which makes me want to just give up on Lent.” Even this week, as God gives you a plan on what you might give up in order to have more of Him, you will face a battle. You may stumble and even fall, and you will consider giving up. But don’t let the enemy win so easily — for failing will lead you to the cross, and the cross will transform you. Lent is about Gospel formation, so keep repenting, and do not give up on Lent! You will find increasing strength. Prepare a prayer for the times when you are tempted to not follow through. Use Scripture, the Sword of the Spirit.
For example, I tend to run to food when I’m stressed or bored. I am very disciplined at meals, but I can easily wander into the pantry in an almost hypnotic trance between meals to grab crackers or a handful of cheerios. Why do I do this? I am feeding my heart idol of comfort with something besides The God of All Comfort. One of my Lenten disciplines therefore is to fast for some meals, but also, cut out all in-between meal snacking and to replace it with running to Him. I will not buy tempting provisions and I will not grab things between meals, but when tempted, will say this prayer and then run to Him: Lord, only in Your presence are fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore. [Psalm 16:11] Yet here I am tempted to find pleasure in snacking. Remove this desire and as I run to You now, meet me, O Lord, and help me wait upon You and trust You to be my comfort. Will I stumble? Most likely. Will I give up on giving up? If I do, I am so deceived — for He is the only One who can rescue me. Lent is about Gospel Formation and learning to repent from my idols and run to Him.
10. What scriptural prayer can you prepare that fits your need for when you are tempted to retreat from your Lenten discipline?
THREE WAYS TO LIVE
In The Prodigal God, which is based on the parable Jesus tells of the two sons in Luke 15, Keller explains there are 3 ways to live:
- Irreligion: As when the younger son, in rebellion, ran away from the father and wasted his inheritance and life.
- Religion: As when the older son, in self-righteousness, thought he could be right before the father by keeping the rules.
- Gospel: As when the younger son returned, in true repentance, throwing himself on his father’s mercy and receive grace.
Too often we fall into the error as believers that if we are not “irreligious,” if we are not being bad, then we are right with God. We may be busy in church, even going to choir and Bible study, but we may not have a gospel-transformed heart. We tend to fall into th error, not of irreligion, but of religion. Instead of resting in the Father’s love, and responding to it in gratitude and service, we try to “earn” our own righteousness. The older son was not resting in the father’s love, and certainly not joyful or thankful, for he said, “I’ve slaved for you all these years…” He was showing, by the bad fruit emanating from his heart, that he had fallen into the other error, that of religion. (Christianity, by the way, is not a religion. Christianity is not earning favor with God, but believing, through the gospel, that we already have favor with God.)
As we will see, this week and next, we all have some “older brotherishness” in our hearts — even if we are not complete older brothers. We can be saved and yet still, on a day to day basis, not really be resting in God’s love. Our prayer lives, for example, may be filled with petition rather than praise, for we are not yet experiencing intimacy with God, not yet having a melted heart that is overwhelmed by His love.
Jesus tells three parables, the parable of the lost sons is the third. But it is important to see whom He was addressing.
11. According to Luke 15:1-2:
- To whom was Jesus speaking?
- About what were they murmuring?
- Which of the three ways of life do you think was true of the Pharisees and why?
12. Read Luke 15:13-16 and find all you can about the “irreligious” way of life.
13. Have you tried the above way of life? What did it bring you?
Read Luke 15:17-24 for The Gospel Way of Life and meditate on Rembrandt’s painting.
Rembrandt: Return of the Prodigal
14. Remember: If you think you understand the gospel, you probably don’t. So slow down, using both the Word and Rembrandt’s painting, and answer:
- What did the son plan to say to the father, after he “came to himself?” (v. 18-19)
- How did the father respond before he ever heard why the son returned or what he planned to say? (vs. 20-24)
- In Rembrandt’s painting, how does he portray the destitute nature of the son and the love of the Father? Tell us all you see.
- Ask the Lord, through the above, to help you begin to comprehend His gospel love for you. Write what He impresses on you.
15. Read Luke 15:25-30 The Way of Religion (Remember — this is the pit into which believers tend to slip)
A. What does he say to his father? How does he show a lack of love and gratitude?
B. How was the older son not seeing his depravity?
Lent will show us our depravity — and that is a good thing.
THURSDAY (IF YOU ARE FALLING BEHIND, SKIP TO FRIDAY) COME BACK IF POSSIBLE
Read the following from Richard Lovelace, Professor of Religious History:
Only a fraction of the present body of professing Christians are solidly appropriating the justifying work of Christ in their lives. Many…have a theoretical commitment to this doctrine, but in their day-to-day existence they are …drawing their assurance of acceptance with God from their sincerity, their past experience of conversion, their recent religious performance or the relative infrequency of their conscious, willful disobedience. Few know enough to start each day with a thoroughgoing stand upon Luther’s platform: You are accepted, looking outward in faith and claiming the wholly alien righteousness of Christ as the only ground for acceptance, relaxing in that quality of trust which will produce increasing sanctification as faith in love and gratitude.
16. Contemplate the above:
A. What does Lovelace say most Christians rely upon for feeling accepted by God?
B. What does he say few know enough to do?
C. How does this speak to you?
17. How did the father offer grace to the son who was choosing the way of religion? (verse 31)
18. How did the father give grace to the son who chose the way of irreligion? (verse 32)

1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
Jesus rescued me and made me His own on September 17th 1988 and we had a wonderful intimacy-He began changing me but I hadn’t a clue about idolatry and after I was married slowly the intimacy I longed for with God began to grow stale until I came to Dee’s blog and God awoke me.
I am still here because the penny might be dropping but hasn’t totally yet-I so long for a deeper intimacy with God and for Gospel Transformation.
Hey–how was singing this morning? So thankful to Him for you, Rebecca!
Elizabeth-It went great! The only way I know is by the responses, and a few encouraged me-when they told me they were so blessed by the worship-He was moving. What really encourages me is when I see everyone right there with us worshiping Him whether they are really expressive about it or not…there were a few gals in the front who were swaying and had their hands up and loudly said ‘Hallelujah’ while I was singing the bridge-that hasn’t happened before so I was a little taken aback yet encouraged that it was evident they were worshiping God with us during the song! 🙂
oh Rebecca–LOVE picturing this time of worship–what a blessing!
So glad to hear this — any chance of a video?
This sounds wonderful.
No video-at least I don’t think anyone took one. If there is one I will let you know. 🙂
Rebecca,
I like your perspective from you being up there in front of everyone and looking out and seeing those in the pews worshipping with you – how that encourages you while you are singing, because you know the Spirit is moving through the song!
It sounds like your singing was a blessing to all. I love music. It connects me to God. I can’t sing well but I am planning on singing with a beautiful voice when I get to heaven. I watched your video and loved hearing you after enjoying learning your heart through this study.
Sarahsal, Love to hear music connects you to God-that encourages me. 🙂
Amen!
I so agree.
That is totally how I am feeling.
I am in strange unfamiliar territory.
Freedom territory and it feels good.

2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
When Dee said that Lent is not so much about forfeiting but about formation.
I was thinking about this the other day-I have walked with God for over 20 years-my husband would fast and seek God in prayer pretty often yet I never fasted. I couldn’t make it through lunch when we would commit to fasting!
It wasn’t until I came to Dee’s blog three and a half years ago that I truly fasted during lent-God showed me what it meant-to turn from Idolatry and replace it with Him-but it wasn’t a ‘thing’ I ‘had’ to do-I did it because I desperately needed Him and my idols were destroying me. I am learning I need to do this regularly because my idols regenerate often and I don’t want to let myself get bound again. It is about formation and it is a process- HE ISN’T DONE WITH ME. I so need to be with you all on this journey!
Such a great clear beginning and intro, Rebecca. Thank you!
Rebecca – I agree it is a formation and process. And He isn’t done with me either. Actually, I believe that He is never done. That we continue to grow until our last day.
Hi Lori!
So true.
LORI! LOVE LOVE THAT YOU ARE HERE! LOVE YOU! 🙂
Thanks sis! So excited to be here! Love you too! 🙂
” I so need to be with you all on this journey!”
Me too!
You are an inspiration to me Rebecca!
And you to me Chris! 🙂

Although I have believed my whole life, I have spent the last 5 years trying to understand the Bible; to know the stories, to dissect the book, to correlate the stories from the Old Testament and the New Testament. I want to know more. I have been with the blog for a couple of years now and have learned soooo much thanks to Dee and ladies. I have also found a support system I can count on day and (literally) night. Can’t wait to dive in and learn more 🙂
Laura-Dancer- 🙂 just love you..We love having you here and look forward to how God will challenge us through your thoughtful questions and ponderings. 🙂
Yes, I love your ‘I want to know more’!
Why I have come:
My Long-term Bible study group has delved into Idol Lies this winter.
While it’s easy to see the idols of others, I am often blind to my own. I’m praying that God will use this Lenten season and this supplementary study to draw me even closer to Him.
What stood out to me and why?
“Instead of running to the Lord for comfort, approval and security, we run to one of his gifts and turn it into a god.”
I do this often. I need to trust that God can and will provide all three–starting today!
welcome Jane–I love TX 🙂
Welcome Jane! I am with Elizabeth-I will have to say I love TX too-even though my family is from Arkansas-and I love Arkansas. 🙂
Welcome, Jane — so glad to have you!
Hello Jane from Texas! Welcome! I think it’s great that you are studying Idol Lies with your Bible study group, and what you learn here will only help you go deeper.
Welcome Jane!
Welcome, Jane…glad you’ll be joining us!
Jane – where in Texas are you? I’m in North Dallas.
Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I am Chris from Ohio, I have been on the blog for about two years now I think. I came deep in the throes of grief and found compassion here and a slow steady balm, answers to some of my whys and the understanding to surrender to the mystery of the rest, of what can’t be understood in this life.
I stay because my desire is to follow Christ in spirit and in truth. I have found nothing like this study for turning my eyes upon Jesus. I need to come daily, to have my thoughts focus on Him and not my emotions or circumstances, I need to keep gazing at Him and following, one step at a time.
always glad to see you post, Chris–missed you for a few days 😉
Chris, I will never forget when you told me you want to be ever closer to Him-you were sincere-and to see you drawing nearer to Him and His transformation in you has been such an encouragement to me this past year!
Hugs to you sister, you are such an encouragement to me.
Chris – the inner transformation in you has been simply amazing to watch; you encourage so many here.

I am Nanci from Central Wisconsin…married, the mother of two adult daughters (no longer at home) and an adopted puppy-girl…our dog. I work full-time at a local state university. I long for the Lord to transform my heart…I see the beginning of His work in me and long for so much more that is needed.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
This year my focus is on authenticity…I desire a pure heart in regards to love, motives, etc. The phrase that that “WHEN WE FAIL, WE WILL LOOK TO THE CROSS ALLOWING THE GOSPEL TO TRANSFORM US FOR LENT IS NOT SO MUCH ABOUT FORFEITING BUT ABOUT FORMATION from the inside out” struck me… I know that I am bound to fail…is this negative thinking?…no, it is reality; it is comforting to know that even when I do fail, God is a merciful God who will continue His work in transforming me…and how does He do it?…from the inside out…His transformation begins in my heart…
I also loved the metaphor of “Together we find warmth, like many logs on a fire, instead of a lonely log dying.” I look forward to spending lent with all of you that I have been blessed to have come to know and care for in participating on this blog; I look forward to meeting and greeting new participants too…together we’ll find warmth, like many logs on a fire…(lovely thought, Dee.)
So glad you’re back and feeling better, Nanci!
I don’t know if I realized you were a Wisconsin girl. Madison? I grew up in West Bend. Have you been there for long?
Born and raised in Fond du Lac…now living in the Stevens Point area for about the past 20 years.
So interesting. Though I am sure I was gone from West Bend before you were even born. Stevens Point is lovely, if a bit chilly!
Nanci, I can relate to your pondering the difficulties of the battle we face, knowing that our faith is in God and not our ability to preform perfectly is such a relief and an inspiration!
Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I live in northeastern Pa and am the mother of two grown boys, grandmother to 3 adorable grandchildren and 2 grand-puppies. Married to my best friend for almost 30 years I absolutely agree with the quote “What if marriage is to make you holy, not happy”. I love living life with my husband. But most of all I love growing deeper in love with my Lord. Oh and this is my very first blog bible study! 🙂
What stood out to you from the above and why?
“WE WANT TO KNOW HIM AND THE POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION. WE WANT TO EXPERIENCE HIS BEAUTY AND HIS BEAUTY IN US THIS LENT. THE ONLY WAY THAT CAN HAPPEN IS GOSPEL TRANSFORMATION — BEING CHANGED FROM THE INSIDE OUT”
I recently finished Idol lies and am in the middle of Redemption by Mike Wilkerson and have been struck by how easily we slip into idol worship. How easily I slip into it! Also it seems that God keeps bringing me back to the GOSPEL and I realize that I do not know as much about gospel living as I should. And finally I have often given up (fasting) things for lent but I do not know all the why’s behind observing Lent. So after reading this I just knew I need to be apart of this.
Welcome — Sharon. I read Redemption too — I think that was where the quote I loved was — we worshipped our way into this mess and by God’s grace will worship our way too.
Grand-puppies! 🙂
Yes! I loved that quote!!
Hi Sharon–glad to have you join us!
Thank you Elizabeth!
Welcome Sharon!
Welcome, Sharon! Glad you have joined us!
Welcome Sharon!
I am in Northeast Ohio, are you in a lake effect snow area?
Hi C.Swan! No I am NE Pa about 2hrs west of NYC. 🙂
Sounds like a good place to be!
Hi Sharon…welcome!
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
Hi, I am Mary and I live in Alberta, Canada. I am a single parent of an adult daughter and a teenage son. Last fall I read Idol Lies which drew me to the blog. I have been without a bible study group for a few years and since coming here I have found a place where I feel accepted, supported, not judged with a group of ladies who are sincere in their questions, answers and prayers. Even though this group spans thousands of miles, being able to read emails throughout the day, on a regular basis can make such a huge difference to something at that moment in time, rather than waiting until the group “gets together” on such and such day. I feel connected to this group, whether it is 6 am or 10 pm.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
“So the big goal this Lent will be to replace our heart idols with the Lord. But a smaller goal to help us move in that direction, is to replace the time we’ve spent feeding our idols with being in His presence. For example, you may choose any of these or another plan:
Replace an hour or all of nightly television with this study and the supplemental reading”
I have been praying for the past few weeks on preparing for Lent and last week, I felt was God’s answer to work through Lent with this group. I have spent the last week asking more for God to prepare my heart and then what to “give up” but not what I wanted to give up, but what HE wanted me to give up. On Friday, I felt I had my answer and then I had to laugh because it was affirmed by Dee’s first point, but I am not to give up TV for an hour each night, I feel that other than the one TV show that I watch with my son and occasional movie, to take the time that I would have “escaped from the day” by not having to think at all, that He would rather I spend that time with Him. Then my first thought in my little dark heart was well that’s not too bad, the shows that I watch, I can always watch later on-line…second thought was “what part of watching online is giving it up?” So sheepishly I have to admit that I failed with my first thought. As a result of my first thought failure, I will be setting up a quiet place in my room, away from everything, that I can just work through the blog, bible and really seek what God wants me to deal with.
Lent has not been part of my history, but I feel that God wants me to really pay attention to Lent this year and work through it with Him. I wonder what my heart will look like by Easter, I suspect it will be different than it is now.
Mary-Canada, Love your heart-and when you called and left a message I picked up that you are a very articulate and thoughtful sister. 🙂 I am looking forward to walking this journey with you here on the blog!
Mary–so glad you are here. Your humility and honesty challenges me and reflects Him. Thankful for you
Love this: “I wonder what my heart will look like by Easter.”
Mary I too relish the anytime availability we have here, looking forward to journeying with you!
“Then my first thought in my little dark heart was well that’s not too bad, the shows that I watch, I can always watch later on-line…second thought was ‘what part of watching online is giving it up?’ So sheepishly I have to admit that I failed with my first thought.”
I love your honesty. My first thought is usually how I can “lessen the blow” of giving something up or wean myself off instead of just giving it up completely.
3. How was Rebecca feeding her comfort idol?
Comfort-food…Rebecca was using a piece of pie while watching the evening news to provide comfort, to de-stress from the stress of her days…initial relief was provided by one piece, but eventually two or three pieces of pie were required.
How is she replacing her comfort idol?
Rebecca stopped reaching for comfort foods; she replaced the comfort food and evening news with books encouraging intimacy with God.
What did God do in her life?
God drew her ever closer to Himself and is continuing to do so. God gave her His peace despite her circumstances remaining unchanged.
4. How was Rachael feeding her control idol?
Rachael took refuge in other things (e.g., her computer, various websites); she worked in conforming her children to her ideals rather than accepting them for who they are. Rachael thought that she would be happier if she could control people and things around her, but actually in the end found this to be counter-productive causing misery.
How is she replacing her control idol?
Rachael turned to the Lord for refuge (e.g., reading God’s Word, listening to Christian music).
What did God do in her life?
Rachael came to the realization that the suffering and trials she endured were actually drawing her closer to the Lord. Regarding her kids, Rachel realized that “they have a battle going on in their own heart”…the Lord opened Rachael’s eyes to truth and His mercies…Rachael takes her refuge in God.
I’m working ahead as suggested…I’m feeling SO much better today, like a new woman!
I love to stop at the re-sale shop on my way home from work frequently…I don’t really need to increase my wardrobe, yet sometimes purchasing a new sweater, purse, shirt, skirt, etc. always seems to give me “a lift” after a stressful, hard day…it’s kind of justification for the stop. I think that what I will give up this lent are my re-sale stops…additionally, I think I am going to go through my closet with a “more than enough” mentality and give one item away each day of lent.
6. Ann failed the very first night, showing her her depravity, and leading her to the cross. She said: A failing lent? It is a good Lent because this Lenten Lament of my sin — it is preparing me for the Easter Joy of my Savior. How will you respond when you fail?
I hate to say it, but probably initially I won’t be very nice to myself…probably pretty self-critical (darn it, Nanci…you goofed AGAIN!), but once I think about it, I will realize that if I am doing my best that is all that I can do…I will need to remind myself that God is a God of truth and mercy, and in my failure I am learning a valuable lesson if I will only open myself to the awareness of the lessons that the Lord has for me.
7. What else stood out to you from Ann’s post?
“I cannot ascend to God but He will descend to me”…”He will have to accomplish it all. I am ashes and I am dust and there is no good in me and I am in dire need and lent has given me clear eyes to see my sin”…”Lent gives me this gift: the deeper I know the pit of my sin, the deeper I’ll drink from the draughts of joy.”
8. What book will you get for your supplemental reading
“The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith”
— and why?
Dee recommended this as supplemental reading for lent if not read previously. Tim Keller’s sermons have been wonderful; I’m sure that this book will be great too, opening my mind to new ideas and perspectives. (I just ordered it and will wait eagerly for it’s arrival.)
Does anyone have an opinion on Walter Wangerin’s “Reliving the Passion”?…Ann gives it her highest recommendation…
Nanci, I think I am going to read the Prodigal God as well..It will be hard to put aside Keller’s book on marriage but I have been wanting to read Prodigal God. I am SO glad you are feeling like a new woman and are going to be on this journey with us. 🙂
Thanks Rebecca…I always surprise myself at how I take feeling healthy and good for granted. A bout of a nasty cold quickly reminds me of my blessing and need for an greater awareness of gratitude in this area.
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I am a sinner saved by grace alone—seeking to daily lay my idols down in repentance and turn back to my True Love. I have stayed with Dee’s teachings a few years now because she is grounded deeply in God’s Word. The focus of her studies is never on improving ourselves but rather on being transformed by the Gospel into the likeness of Christ, finding the deep, deep intimacy with Him we were created for.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
Dee said “THE THING WE FEAR THE MOST IS THE SECRET TO SETTING US FREE”. This is a question I can ask myself several times a day, when I sense myself clinging to an idol. What is it I am trying to control, or—am I fearing rejection here? Then I can lay it down on the altar before the Lord, and ask Him to fill me up with Himself instead.
I love being transformed, not improving ourselves
Me too, Dee shows us the desire needs to be a real heart change, not a change in outward behavior!
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I have known “your” Rebecca for around 15 years. I saw one of her posts about these studies quite a while ago but I have never taken the time to do one. I guess my “idols” have been filling my time. I’ve been a believer all my life, growing up Catholic and even attending 12 years of Catholic school. But, after a divorce 5 years ago, I left the Catholic faith. The non-denominational churches that I have attended have not celebrated lent. And although I could have been continuing some of those practices, like fasting or giving up something, I have not been. I want to use this time to draw closer to Him and to continue to deepen my relationship. I also want to learn more about the “idols” that keep me from Him.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
What stood out for me was “LENT IS NOT SO MUCH ABOUT FORFEITING BUT ABOUT FORMATION”. In all those years of fasting or giving up something for lent, I do not believe I had any transformations. It was just something I did for the 40 days and then went back to. I’m hoping to finally make some permanent changes and identify those “idols” within me.
So glad you’re here, Lori!
Welcome, Lori! I agree with you that just giving up something for lent doesn’t lead to transformation – unless we replace it with Him, which is what you will be doing through this study!
Welcome Lori!
So good to have you with us, and to know your a friend of ‘our’ Rebecca!
Hi Lori! I too grew up Catholic and left the denomination after divorce. Welcome…glad you will be joining us.
thanks everyone. glad to be here.
I am married to Tim & the mother of 5, age 10 to 32. We are homeschooling the 2 youngest, & I work parttime. I have been a believer for over 30 yrs, but I’m feeling like I’m in a desert time w/God, & I’m longing for a renewed closeness with Him. I’m here because this study sounds like it will help me focus my eyes on my Savior!
Sheree — so glad to have you here. Mother of 5! I am too, though my youngest is 30.
Yes, Dee. We have another tiny connection. We live about 60 miles north of Kearney, NE (not MO, lol). Anyway, my oldest had a bad fx when he was in ms/hs, and we saw your husband, Dr. Steve, for the consultation. Growth plates, you know! It’s been awesome to see God’s hand on your life and ministry! Blessings and I’m excited to participate in this Lenten study!
Always love a connection to Steve. Thanks for sharing, Sheree.
Welcome Sheree!
Welcome Sheree, this study really will help you focus of Christ!
Glad you’re here, Sheree…what a small world…welcome!
What stood out to me: I desire to live in DAILY intimacy with Christ!
Rebecca’s turned to food, not God, in her stress. And (the way it works) needed more & more food to satisfy her emptiness. After turning to God & acknowledging her need for intimacy with Him, she consciouslly replaced her idol w/a focus on Him. He didn’t take away her stresses, but as she is more intimately walking with Him,He carries her through!
Rachael was on a quest to control both her health issues & herchildren,& it wasn’t bringing peace to anyone’s life! As God brought her to realize her need for Him, she began giving those issues to Him & let Him ‘change’ her mind. She & her family are beginning to see the fruit of God’s work in her life!
Elizabeth, I loved this-you have such insight and the gift to nail it down with few words: “The focus of her studies is never on improving ourselves but rather on being transformed by the Gospel into the likeness of Christ, finding the deep, deep intimacy with Him we were created for.” – This is packed Elizabeth!! So true of Dee!
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I started on this blog a year and a half ago when my circumstances changed and I did not think that I would be able to attend a face to face Bible study. Actually, my daughter, Krista, told me about the blog, as she knew I had read Dee’s book on the Friendships of Women and loved it. Now my daughter is here on the blog as of a few months ago.
Although I have been a Christian for many years, the spiritual insights on this blog have helped me turned my face toward the Lord and away from trusting in other things or people (my idols). Now, when I begin to panic because things are not going “my way”, I recognize that I am trusting in my idols and can quickly turn to the Lord, calling to him to rescue me and show me how to react, trusting Him.
I have found this blog a source of spiritual wisdom, and encouragement. Right now, we are in family crisis and appreciate the many women here who have prayed and offered support in other ways. I just love you all so much. God has given me a special gift in giving me the support offered by this blog.
Dianne, well you have our support and really I so appreciate your support in prayer for me as well. I always glean something new from your posts..I saw some pictures of you with your grandsons-how precious and you had so much joy on your face! I can tell you are an incredible grandma-hate that you are going through this crisis-but the beauty is seeing how you and Krista are clinging to Him.
Thanks, Rebecca. It is a little scary that some of you are seeing my face and such on Facebook thanks to my budding photographer grandson, Stephen. 🙂
Diane, I prayed sunday for Krista and your whole family and will continue…especially for tuesday.
We are given a gift in you too Diane!
You are so gracious, Chris.
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I have been here for awhile now and love hanging around with like-minded ladies who challenge and encourage. I am a daughter of the Kind, a wife, mother, and writer.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
I actually was drawn to the book list the most! 🙂 Love that. I loved how you pointed out things we run to which can be good but should not be first.
My kindred spirit bookworm friend.
I agree, Angela. It is hard for me to resist wanting to go out and get all the books that Dee recommended. I love the saying “So many books, So little time!”
1. I am a wife and mother of 2 boys 16 and 28. Having been a Christian for many years, I wondered why I could see little fruit in my life. I was on the blog for the initial study on idolatry. It was so beneficial to me because the veil over my eyes began to lift at that time. I want to go deeper into fellowship with The Lord, that i may bear fruit and that is why I would love to join you for Lenten study.
2. The thing that absolutely jumped off the screen to me is the same statement about fear that Elizabeth mentioned. I have had a long hard struggle with fear. Lately it has been eating me up lately and everywhere I turn God is speaking to it and reassuring me. My desire is to delve into the word with you and find those promises that I can use to remind myself of the hope that at the end of this is freedom rather than those things that I fear.
The other thing is the meaning of lent and how I have always looked at it as a sacrifice for The Lord, but that is only part of it. It is more about formation than forfeit.
I was hoping you’d join us for Lent, Anne. Hurrah!
oh Anne, SO good to have your here–oh how I love your wise, wise heart
ANNE!!!! SO is God good or what? Thank you God. I was just thinking about Anne hoping she would join us!
All these sweet new ladies we get to journey with along with some I know- Lori-a sweet friend from where I used to work, Rachael, and now Anne will be with us for lent! 🙂 🙂 Oh is this going to be a sweet blessing..Okay..I will try to control myself-sorry! 🙂
You are each so awesome and precious to me! Thank you for the warm welcome!
Anne, I’m glad you’re back, too!
Me too, so grateful for your deep heart Anne!
I am Rachael from Kansas City. After being a part of the Idol Lies pilot study with Dee last year here in Kansas City, I have been doing Dee’s blog studies off-line. I recently started attending Gashland Presbyterian Church with Dee, and am joining the Lenten Study with other women from GPC. Dee asked me to mention that I am the Rachael from the video, and I’ve teased her about finally getting me to sign-up on-line. God has been taking me on a journey of closer intimacy with him for over a year now, through various trials, and has used Dee’s studies greatly in my life. I’m looking forward to the Lenten Study and desiring gospel transformation in my daily life.
Hip Hip HURRAH! — you are on after my bugging you FOREVER. 🙂
oh Rachel! Your story ministered to me SO much. The first time I saw your video, several months ago, I wept. I related on so many levels. I am really thankful for your transparency–and that you’ve decided to appear on-line! 😉
Well Elizabeth, Rachael so reminds me of you-:) when I was doing the study with Rachael I told Dee Rachael reminded me of you. I couldn’t believe how similar you two are-your situations-you both are so honest and out front with what is truly going on in your hearts, your quiet spirits-your contemplative minds, and of course your play dough hearts.
I look forward to getting to know you, Elizabeth. Dee & Rebecca have told me I remind them of you. 🙂
RACHAEL!! :):):) Can I get a grin big enough?!? I am so glad you are here and I will forever be grateful to God weaving our lives together-your life has so impacted me.
So glad we can sharpen one another once again. I’ve missed you!
Thank you Rachael for coming on, we are going to be blessed I feel sure by getting to know you better, as we have already been by your testimony!
Is Gashland Presbyterian the one on N. Oak with the Red Door? If so, I used to live right by there when I lived in KC. My step son attended Young Life there and my older daughter had a Girl Scout lock in there.
If I remember correctly, JoAnne King attended there and was in the bell choir. Do either of you know her?
I’m fairly new there, but one of the other GPC ladies may know her. Small world!
You know the older I get the smaller I realize it is.. lol
I know JoAnne King, and yes thats the church. She is a wonderful woman! My husband is the pastor there. Small world!
Melissa.. it is a small world. I’ve known JoAnn for about 13-14 years. Her daughter Betsy and my daughter went to school together, took dance together and also were in the same girl scout troop.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
CHRIST LONGS TO SET US FREE
BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE
THERE WILL BE A BATTLE
AS JESUS BATTLED SATAN FOR FORTY DAYS
WE WILL BATTLE HIS LIES FOR FORTY DAYS
BUT AS JESUS CLUNG TO THE WORD
SO WILL WE, AND WHEN WE FAIL, WE WILL LOOK TO THE CROSS
ALLOWING THE GOSPEL TO TRANSFORM US
In church this morning, the preacher referred to the time when Peter asked Jesus to let him walk on the stormy water to Jesus, which Peter did successfully until he saw the waves and then he started to sink. This is a familiar story, but to me it has a special meaning because a couple of years ago, I remember being challenged by God to “get out of the boat” and walk toward Him. I have been doing that, but the storm has not abated and recently has turned into a hurricane. We truly are in battle with Satan. We need to battle His lies, get our eyes off the storm and look to the cross for gospel transformation.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29 ESV
2 Cor 1:5 NIV – “For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.”
Diane–how did today go, with the families together? Still praying for Tuesday’s meeting.
You have such a good memory, elizabeth! Thanks for asking. Everyone behaved nicely. Things went smoothly until the end when Krista’s oldest son became very agitated over several small things and started throwing a tantrum which Jeff reacted to with anger as well. Yelling match ensued. After that,it was so sad to watch the boys leave with their Dad, the boys barely turning to say bye to Krista after we had had such a happy weekend. They don’t really understand what is going on.
Yes, it took everything in me not to say I was going to take the boys back to my place again after the way that Jeff reacted to Stephen. But I knew they would both calm down. They “clash” so often because their personalities are so much alike! But it drives me NUTS that Jeff has so little patience with Stephen when what he needs to do the most is get down on his level and talk to him rationally, not yelling!
Anyway, I talked with my boys tonight on the phone at bedtime and all was fine. Stephen having meltdown and Jeff yelling at him is “normal”, unfortunately. I truly wish Jeff would go to anger management. But I have a feeling it will have to be court ordered…
I truly did have a wonderful weekend with my boys. I miss them already. And Mom, I did give them hugs and kisses while before they left. So them barely saying goodbye to me didn’t bother me *too* much. I was grateful Jeff encouraged them to say bye. No, they truly don’t understand what is going on.
Sorry, Krista. The part I mentioned about the boys hardly saying bye, sounded much worse than I meant it to. I was quite sure you had already said your goodbyes, but it was watching them leave the church without you as if it was normal that was hard. There were a lot of people around at that point, so the boys might not have really noticed you standing a ways off. Anyway, sorry if I painted an incorrect picture.
It’s okay, I understand.
I’m so sorry, Krista that you have to go through this painful time in your life. But I see you growing by leaps and bounds in your faith:)
I agree with Joyce — such a painful parting scene, but so proud of you, Krista.
Praying still for Jeff’s anger management to be in response to a conviction that God lays on his heart, for God to protect the hearts and minds of the boys, and for you Krista and Diane, that you cling to the promises, someday the rough places will be made plain, we love you girls!
Thx for this Diane. Meant so much to me tonight 🙂
I’m always amazed at how the sermon at church seems to regularly coincide with Dee’s lesson. We have been studying Jeremiah, today’s sermon was on “False v. True Religion”. I just wanted to share a few verses from one of the hymns we sang–
“Jesus Calls Us” by C. Alexander (1852)
Jesus calls us from the worship
Of the vain world’s golden store;
From each idol that would keep us,
Saying, “Christian, love Me more.”
In our joys and in our sorrows,
Days of toil and hours of ease,
Still He calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love Me more than these.”
Jesus calls us: by Thy mercies,
Saviour, may we hear Thy call,
Give our hearts to Thy obedience,
Serve and love Thee best of all.
Elizabeth, this reminds me of this morning-the same thing happened! God is moving-tying Dee’s study in with Bible Study class this morning. Our teacher is beginning to take us through Colossians and he said that the Gospel isn’t just about being saved-it is much bigger than that-it is also about transformation. I about fell out of my chair and thanked God over and over inside!..then he said we are going to unpack Colossians and said, for example, like being able to forgive others-how can we not when we see how He has forgiven us when we didn’t deserve it-THE GOSPEL..He was applying the Gospel-and Paul takes believers back to the Gospel over and over…I am telling you I was thrilled that God is taking our class in this direction. I am just going to really try to keep my mouth shut and let God move. 🙂
I love the music at your church.
Sang this in worship this morn because of your posting.
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I was here very briefly during the advent study, and quickly fell WAY behind.
But, I am back. I have a small sense that the gospel is way beyond my understanding, but I know I need way more of it in my life. I want/need to go deeper in exploring its transforming power…even though I’m a bit worried about keeping up. I’ll be praying for insight regarding the time wasters in my life, and what I need to give up for a season…
So glad you are back, Liz!
Welcome back Liz! So glad you are back with us. 🙂
Liz welcome back!
Don’t worry too much about keeping up, especially with comment reading, it can be overwhelming!
There are seasons for each of us when all we can manage is to do the questions, sometimes not even every question, I can fall prey to perfectionist thinking…’if I cant do this perfectly I should just stop’ sort of thing. If the enemy whispers this to you tell him to shut up!
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
Hi, I am Therese, and my husband and I have been members at Gashland Presbyterian for over 26 years. I have 3 children, ages 23-17. I am excited about this study so that I can get back to being in God’s Word. I’ve struggled with priorities lately, and other than a quick morning devotional, have not spent much time focused on my relationship with the Lord.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
I attended the Women’s Conference at GPC 2 years ago, where Dee talked about Idols. At that time, I was surprised to see how many idols I had, and was convicted to get them out of my life. After listening to the 2 testimonies, I realize that I have slipped back into “Idolator” mode, and it’s time to get out!
Therese — so very glad to have you here! So fun to be able to connect here as well as GPC!
Glad you’re with us Therese!
Welcome Therese!
Therese, this too is why I am excited about the study. Reshifting my priorities, spending more time with the Lord, and just wanting to fall in love with him more.
Tell us alittle about yourself Melissa!
Therese@GPC, so glad we’re joining the study together. I look forward to getting to know you better. Audrey loves her teachers!
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I’m glad that we only are supposed to write a sentence about ourselves (does that count as my sentence?). I’m here because participation during Lent on here (last year? or year before? or?) prepared me for Easter in a way that I hadn’t been prepared before.
Church was cancelled this morning due to a blizzard. Thankful that I beat the blizzard back here — Interstates are closed, both north and south, east and west.
2. What stood out to me:
“Often people do “give up” something for Lent, but the reason has often been lost. We turn away from something so that we will have the time to be with Jesus, or so that His life might bloom in us. We die that we might have life.”
This is a good reminder of “why.” It also makes me curious about specific reasons why people give up something for Lent. Maybe I’ll ask “why” someone tells me s/he is giving up something for Lent (talked to someone last week who is cutting down eating for Lent because she doesn’t want to give up beer, which has led to weight gain)
So glad to see you, Renee. I have missed your sense of humor.
Well, actually, glad to see many of you who have been absent quite a bit. And welcome to all the new people. Looks like we will have a great Lent study!
Thanks, Diane! It’s good to be back — didn’t even have cell phone reception part of last week.
Anxious to see the new life in all of us this spring!
me too…:)
Renee, that little sentence does not count for telling us about yourself, Mystery women!!
Hmmm, Joyce…. 😉 Well, I might find a picture some day this spring.
Something else that stood out: gorgeous purple crocuses.
I love those too!
5. What possesses me? Obsesses me? Maybe the minutiae of my life? My unorganized state, the clutter? I let the urgent trump the important. What do I give up to replace it with God? Ha, the homeschooling! Oh…wait…that won’t work! Maybe staying up late, my “me time” is what possesses me. But I am often not spending that time with God…when I could be. Selfishness…
6. I think I see that I fail quite often…but maybe I am not desperate enough to have more of God to make that change me….
7. I love Ann’s honesty & transparency.
Sheree, ” I think I see that I fail quite often…but maybe I am not desperate enough to have more of God to make that change me….” – I can so relate-I fail every day and question how passionate I am for Him.. but may I encourage you? The fact you came here and also the fact that you even asked that question is HUGE…Shows you just may be willing to lay yourself down before Him and let Him peel off the layers-you just may be desperate for Him!
Be on guard because the enemy will try to put condemning thoughts in your head-even use justifications for continuing to go to your idol-he does that with me.
Sheree, we are practically neighbors! I’m in Kearney!
Hmmm… I imagine that working ahead doesn’t mean skipping everything in between, but… #8. What book will you get for your supplemental reading — and why?
-Prodigal God because I haven’t read it yet!
and/or (not on the list!): A Grace Revealed by Jerry Sittser because I read A Grace Disguised a couple years ago, ordered (and have) A Grace Revealed but haven’t read it yet (I recommended it to someone else and heard it was good, also has good reviews).
Glad to see you Renee!
I just finished A Grace Revealed, it was difficult for me to finish, but so helpful. His grief so profound, his wisdom so hard won and practical. I was sent his book by another mom who had lost a young son, she said it was far and away the most helpful thing she read.
And I loved Prodigal God so so much! I have purchased it and given it away many times.
This will be my first participation in your blog Bible Studies. I’m particularly interested in Lent. I’m a retired educator and a retired United Methodist Pastor. Iam passionate about my personal relationship with God. I’m looking forward to this study.
Welcome Pat! So very glad to have you here! Thanks for coming!
Hi Pat! So glad you are here with us! 🙂
Hi Pat…glad that you will be participating…welcome!
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I was raised in church. My 103 year-old grandmother has lived for Jesus all of her life and made sure I knew about Jesus. She still gets on her knees and prays for all of us. About 18 years ago the Presence of God was waiting for me when I went into our pastor’s office. So we just sat there while I basked in His Presence. After that I have had an insatiable hunger for more of Him.
2.What stood out to you from the above and why?
One of the many things I was impressed by above is Dee’s reference to our idols. We so often seek the advice of friends and family first, while going to God as a last resort.Even when we do go to Him it is sometimes with a half-hearted trust. My desire is to always go to God first. I pray my heart will be purified of my idols.
Pat — so wonderful to hear of your praying grandmother — you are like Timothy! Loved the Presence of God story and your insatiable hunger. So thankful to have you here.
Welcome Pat H-glad you’re joining us!
Your 103 year old grandmother on her knees is an inspiring mental image, Welcome Pat!
3. How was Rebecca feeding her comfort idol? How is she replacing her comfort idol? What did God do in her life?
Rebecca fed her comfort idol with food and news (oh how I know this, the political junkie that I am!). She now reads spiritual books. God didn’t take away her stress of the boys and the husband who works all the time, but He gave her peace while going through the daily struggles 🙂 God is good.
4. How was Rachael feeding her control idol? How is she replacing her control idol? What did God do in her life?
In Rachael’s case, she was trying to control everyone and everything. She used to check facebook and email thinking it was a relaxor, now she studies the Word. God has made her a much happier person. Her family has noticed as well; fewer fights 🙂
I’ve been blessed to have been on Dee’s blog for a little over 3 years, coming on here after reading Dee’s book, “God of all comfort”, which continues to help me with trials and grieving.
These ladies here are Godly women with hearts of gold. I learn as much from them as from Dee and I can’t say enough about Dee. I gave my heart to the Lord when I was in my 20’s and am now 63. I can honestly say I have learnt more since I’ve been on Dee’s blog than I had for many years. Dee’s new book, “Idol Lies” has helped me have a more intimate relationship with my saviour and I am a work in progress, as I strive to replace the idols in my life with God everyday.
You may not hear a lot from me here as I’m disabled, caring for a special needs daughter, but be assured I am here, reading all your comments and praying for you, as we go along and learning right along with you.
I love Tim Keller’s statement and am finding it so true:
“If you think you understand the gospel, that proves you don’t, and if you say, “Oh I hardly understand it,” that means you are getting it”.
Joyce — you bless me and every woman here. You are the fragrance of Christ.
Agreed, you are so real and so loving Joyce, a blessing to all of us!
Thank you Dee and Chris…you are too sweet:)
1. My name is Natalie. I heard the Gospel for the first time when I was in high school attending a Young Life Camp. It was not until four years ago when my husband and I started attending Gashland Presbyterian that I started to really know, love, and follow the Lord. I’ve come because I crave learning more about the Lord and His Word. I also love hearing from women who have been walking with the Lord for a long time.
2. “We are in slavery to ourselves and to our idols, but Christ LONGS to set us free.” This quote stands out to me. When I stop and think about the idols in my life at this moment they become easy to identify because they are the things that control my thoughts. I know it, and as this quote has brought to my attention, Christ knows it.It breaks my heart that I’m breaking His, yet HE still wants to set ME free. Thank you Dee for this opportunity to study and connect with one another.
Welcome Natalie! So glad you are with us! 🙂
Oh Natalie — welcome! I’m trying to enlarge your picture to see if you are who I
think you are at GPC. I think so, but not sure. 🙂 But so very glad to have you here
and love your eager young heart.
well, get to know Natalie, she is a dear young woman. Dee, Natalie helped plan the women’s conference last year. She and her husband are great young leaders in the church. Natalie, I am so glad you are participating!
Then she is who I thought! Thanks Melissa.
Welcome Natalie–YL has always been close to my heart–so glad to have you!
Hello Natalie, you have come to a good place!
Natalie@GPC, I don’t think we’ve met yet. I hope to meet you soon. Glad we are joining the study together. Love your heart.
I forgot…I want to welcome everyone now! I’m so glad you are here!
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
I am married with 4 grown children (2 are step-children) between the ages of 32 to 43. I live in Dyer Indiana and have retired (thank you Lord). I have been in church every since I was a child but my great love for the Lord started when I was about 29 and a mess. Somehow I knew I needed Him desperately and He saved me.
I have come because I heard Dee on a radio program from Moody Bible School and I felt like I have know her all my life. She spoke about the Idol Lies book which I purchased that day. I have never really done Lent and I so look forward to this time and study.
Fun to get a little background. I take it you were not absolutely in love with your job? 🙂 Or maybe weary! So good to have you here.
Annette, we prayed so hard for ladies hearing Dee on the radio to be turned from their idols and drawn to Christ…you, your presence and testimony hear are an answer to prayer!
So glad you are staying with us Annette
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
It seems that Mom already introduced me. 😉 Yes, I just “officially” joined the blog a few months ago, though have been reading it, and knew about it, for longer. I have found such compassion and love here at times it’s overwhelming, but in a good way!
I was introduced to Dee’s work through a friend of mine about 5 years ago. I worked through her “Ecclesiastes” Bible study, and there was a quote in it from “The Friendship of Women” that truly touched me, so I borrowed that book from my friend as well. I’d really like to own a copy of it so I could read it again. I think I need to.
Looking forward to the Lent study. I already know what I am giving up so I can spend more time with God. Facebook. Not completely, but I’m need to be on it A LOT less than I am.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why?
” We may say, for example, that God is our refuge and we know He loves us, but in reality, when we are longing for refuge we run to friends, Facebook, or food. We are enslaved, as Galatians says, to “nongods.” This is not the gospel way of life. It is the opposite.”
I have come a long way with this even within the last few months. Especially the “run to friends” when longing for refuge, security, and love. I did that. Way too much. Finally learning to lean totally on Him, not others! It is definitely a process, though. Thank God for His Grace!
Yes, thank God for his grace!
It is so good to see you clinging to Him in your storm Krista.
Thank you, Chris. <3
Hi, Sarahsal from Peoria, IL. I have 6 children, 2 sons are in heaven, 2 daughters, 2 sons, of that group 2 biological, 4 adopted with varying skin shades. 7 grandchildren, #8 due anytime with an even count of 4 girls, 4 boys. I am a retired nurse. Worked with breast cancer patients. I helped my sister, (whose husband had a stroke), create a weekend camp experience for stroke survivors and their caregivers. What started in 2004 as a local event has grown to 23 weekend retreats around the country. My husband, of 47 years, and I will provide leadership at about 10 this year. I feel very blessed to be able to volunteer in such a wonderful way.
I am fairly new here. I have been a Christian for many years. I hunger for more intimacy with God. I love the learning and challenge this blog has caused in me. I want more of God and less of Sarah.
Such interesting background — what a great vision for that camp — that’s exciting. Love the 4 adopted with varying skin shades. I’m speaking sort of near Peoria in May — first at a pastor’s conference, but then at a church open to anyone (more on my website.) At least I think it’s near Peoria — I could be way off. : )
Morton, IL is about 15-20 miles from Peoria. My favorite quilt store is in Morton.
So neat to know about your ministry!
Hi, Sarah! I’m from Peoria, too. 🙂 Your ministry sounds amazing, it’s so exciting to hear how God is using you! Looking forward to hearing more from you. Also excited to find a local sister! 🙂
Liz, is that a Starbucks apron your wearing? I recognize the apron, as my daughter worked her way through college as a manager for Starbucks. I love your hair!
Hello, Joyce. It is a Starbucks apron! I work there. I actually just accepted a shift supervisor position at a new store yesterday! I’m excited, but nervous. And, thanks. It’s not actually my hair, just a wig I was wearing for Halloween. I wish I could dye my hair like that, though. I love fun colors. 🙂
Hi Sarahsal, my dad was from Peoria as well. I have never been there however. He died when I was 13 and one day i hope to visit. I have many relatives in both illinois and Indians 🙂
You mean Indiana, Laura?
Whoops! I did mean Indiana! My phone autocorrects all the time and I miss it 🙁
Another book I’d like to read: The Cross and the Prodigal: Luke 15 Through the Eyes of Middle Eastern Peasants by Kenneth E. Bailey. I first heard about this author when I went to the Midday Connection website around Christmas time to listen to Dee. I listened to Bailey talk about Christmas through a Middle Eastern lens after I listened to Dee 🙂
Tonight, I was thinking that I’d like to better understand Easter from a Middle-Eastern perspective — ran into this book AFTER I placed an Amazon order!
Read it and bring that fascinating perspective to us!
1.Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come.
Hi, I’m Angela from KC and I have the wonderful privilege of being Rebecca’s sis-in-law and a friend and fellow GPCer of Dee’s. I was invited by Melissa@GPC to do this study and immediately thought, “Wow, that would be great!” but then thought, ” Oh no, I can’t blog!” and “Can I keep up?” etc. Sadly, my “idol-making factory” tends to take over alot! I so want more intimacy with Jesus, that’s why I have come.
2. What stood out to me from above is that although God has revealed to me that my comfort comes from Him, I have become lax battling my flesh and once again I find my intimacy with Jesus slipping. I need accountability, support and encouragement in order to face the truth and be set free. I want my comfort to come from the loving arms of my Father in heaven and not the emptiness of my heart idol.
So glad you are here. Love your heart. Thanks for the big hug this morning — widows need that!
And many here may know you from being on the Idol Lies video!
oh Angela(@GPC), it’s so great to have you join us!
Welcome my sweet sister in law-well sister..who discipled me as a new believer! 🙂 Angela and I both have two brothers no sisters-and God gave us one another. 🙂 Doubly blessed! So glad to be taking this journey with you also. 🙂
A big welcome to you Angela, none of us do this blog perfectly by the way, just keep on keeping on…you will be blessed, and I am betting we will too!
Yay Angela, if I can do it you can do it. So excited to walk along other GPC sisters in this journey. Accountability is exactly what I need too!
Angela@GPC! I know Dee is glad we’ve both decided to try the blog. It was hard for me too, to take this step! We’ll traverse it together! 🙂
I am Dawn from MI, married to Kevin for 29 years this July. I’m the mother of 4 sons ages 19-27. I homeschooled them and they all are attending college some full time, some part time, only one lives at home daily. I came to this blog after seeing Dee at a women’s retreat and signing up for her emails. I really, really, really (and I mean really) need to have contact with Christian women and this place is a Godsend 🙂
The thing that stood out to me most above was: “For some of you, especially in the first few weeks, much will be review, but that is good, for as Martin Luther says, “We must beat this into our heads every day.” The default mode of the human heart is idolatry, either trusting in His gifts or in ourselves — because we don’t really trust His love enough to fall into it. We must keep resetting our hearts to the gospel.”
I need the review and refresher as I find myself slipping into a dullness in which I have lost a feeling of connection with God and have allowed myself to give in more to self comforting idols rather than trusting God to be my all in all.
I love you Dawn and I am so glad God sent you, and me, and all of us here!
I came across your website on a link posted on facebook by a local christian radio station. It intrigued me, I grew up in a southern baptist church calling myself a Christian but I gave my heart entirely over to Christ in the last two years. Lent is something I viewed as a lutheran practice & have never considered partaking. After reading your introduction I am ready to prayerfully consider what idols I am putting before God & replace them with Gods word & one on one prayer time. I feel like I am on the edge of a great journey in ministry for God. I don’t know when or how but I
know I have told God where ever He leads me I will go & this study is an essential act of obedience to His calling. Thank you so much for this opportunity.
Welcome Amanda, “Gods word and one prayer at a time”, lovely!
Welcome, Amanda! Way up north in MN ?? or is there another Warroad someplace?
Dee, have you ever read No Greater Love by Mother Teresa? I need to read it because it was a gift from my son’s fiancé and would like to have it done by the time we visit them at Easter. If you have read it, do you think it would be good for Lenten study?
I think you should. Her life is so radiant with the love of Christ. I read Malcom Muggeridge’s bio of her and was impressed. And I read her prayer diary (that she asked not to have published, but the church still did) and saw a fellow sojourner. Failing, confessing, doubting, praising… It will also help knit you to your future daughter-in-law.
4. How was Rachael feeding her control idol? How is she replacing her control idol? What did God do in her life?
Rachael fed her control idol with running to the computer-going to her coupon site, Facebook and searching out sites to try to fix her health issues. Also she tried to control her kids-to direct them in the way she thinks they should go rather than accepting them as they are.
She is replacing her control idol with replacing the lies with the truth-with the Powlison videos and the book she read. She began during lent to go to the Word instead of the computer. God took the idol off the throne and put Himself there and she began to change as she took His hand and went higher up with Him-as she grew more intimate with Him her idol lost His icy grip and she was freed- His fruits began to blossom inside her.
Don’t know yet. Probably dinner, like Ann. I’m waiting for God to move.
6. Ann failed the very first night, showing her her depravity, and leading her to the cross. She said: A failing lent? It is a good Lent because this Lenten Lament of my sin — it is preparing me for the Easter Joy of my Savior. How will you respond when you fail?
Not sure…..probably beat myself over the head?! I guess the question is what should I do? I suppose I should just try harder the next night? Pray about it?
7. What else stood out to you from Ann’s post?
I want the wooden wreath!!! Can her son make me one???
I like this but I’m not sure I understand it yet:
“Don’t think of lent as about working your way to salvation. Think of it as working out your salvation.”
Oh, Laura. I just love your honesty. LOL!
I think you can buy Ann V’s wooden wreaths online from her website. She will probably be talking about Lent this week and give information about the wreaths. If I find anything, I’ll give you the link.
Well, dinner didn’t work out as planned tonight. The problem is I worked 11 hours today and then I get home and am exhausted. I feel like I need nutrition. So, I am still thinking on the thing to give up. I have until Wednesday, right?
i also want the wreath!! i love having the visual with what i am doing.
What possesses-obsesses me? doing! Doing! Doing! it doesn’t matter where i am or what is happening, when i get anxious or unsettled, i do-computer, food, cleaning, I do something. i run from God by doing. i become very uncomfortable with sitting and absorbing-allowing me not to be in the control seat and feeling the awkwardness of not knowing what to do or say. also am becoming aware that i like to do the bible study and the work, but then quit without praying. i am realizing this is what i need to deal with during lent, but how to do it??
How do i respond when i fall? sometimes it doesn’t phase me, but other times i feel overwhelmed and incapable of doing it. tend to think it is all about me and i forget to call on God for strength-by prayer. Mt. 6:14-16 (Message) For me to know God and truly experience God, i have to forgive others and myself for being who they are and i am. by doing this, i can accept God’s love and grace for me and can experience the joy of who God has chosen me to be that is where i become anxious because in my humanness (and i and others have told me) i am not good enough. hard to die to what others say and believe what christ says when life happens.
1. Tell us a sentence about yourself and why you have come. I’m a day behind, but so excited to begin this study! My name is Laurie Reyes. I’m a pastor’s wife and less-than-ideal homeschool mother of 4. I have 3 teenage sons and an 11 year old daughter who might as well be a teenager ;). I’ve come because I’m hungry for more of Jesus. I’ve come to do battle with idols of my heart that are standing in the way of that intimacy with Him. I’ve come to check out this modern format for doing Bible Study together. I think it could bless a lot of women who don’t have time to attend a study due to schedules and busy-ness, so I’m curious how this is done so I might be able to do it with ladies in our church.
2. What stood out to you from the above and why? I came to the website thinking already about what I would deprive myself of. Even this was tainted with idolatry because I immediately began thinking dietarily (I’m on Weight Watchers) – thinking that maybe a benefit from the lenten fast I choose could be accelerated weight loss. YUCK! So what stood out to me was the appeal to have more of Jesus. I was thinking denial. But now I’m thinking turning from something good to gain Christ…someOne infinitely better.
Welcome Laurie from South Jersey. I am praying that you will find what you truly need here at the Jesus’ feet.
Thank you for the warm greeting!
Welcome Laurie! Glad you’ve joined in!
thank you for the warm greeting!
Hello Laurie!
Hi Laurie,
So glad to have you.
I think it is great you are thinking about hosting an online study for your church. I have some thoughts on how to do that if you decide you like it — I am praying and brainstorming and talking to my web man — we may come up with some ideas i’ll be posting eventually on my site.
Welcome welcome!
I would love to hear your thoughts, so I’ll look out for those ideas. It’s a modern age we are living in, isn’t it? With all of the dangers of social networking, this is one way we can harness it for the glory of God!
Yes. May the Lord show us how!
I belong to Christ Fellowship in McKinney, TX and due to my schedule I also do an online bible study that is based on our sermons with people (mostly women) from our church. Actually there are two. One we just do via a group on facebook and one of the girls will post questions from the study guide and you comment when you can. The other one we actually go to google circles and meet on Wednesday nights by video chat. Love both of them. I can put you in contact with one of the leaders from church if either of you would like.
Hi Laurie! Glad you have joined us 🙂 I tried adding more Jesus into my life a couple of years ago (instead of denying anything). I think it’s a good idea!
Both ladies videos were encouraging seeing them running to things to get a quick fix yet seeing it is not a true fix. Only running to God is what will truly help. Reminds me that He is there and walks with me through this. Really liked how rachel said if I could control people and situations I would be happier. I can so relate to that!!! That is one great way He drives me to Himself.
I may read Spiritual Depression-I got an amazon giftcard coming so I may order it with that! I do want to finish Idol lies and I have journal that is from One Thousand Gifts I requested for Christmas so I will probably do that too.
Loved Anne’s Lent post, this stood out “Lent gives me this gift: the deeper I know the pit of my sin, the deeper I’ll drink from the draughts of joy.” I am going to download that little booklet she is offering for free so I can go through this with my kids. I have never really walked through it with them so they understand why I give something up. Maybe they can do it too.
Excited to see all the new ladies. Maybe I will be given more time to read all the comments!
Angela, so excited to journey with you-and am so blessed to have known you on the blog for so long-and so love your heart-your desire to adopt ‘little man’..how is that going by the way-have been praying!
Our homestudy is done!! PTL! And we raised every penny for it so that is a huge praise! Now we have to talk to mom and hopefully she will agree then we go sign papers if she is agreeable. She has not been showing up for visits. She said she knew he was better off with us so hoping that our conversation when we find her goes favorable. Thanks for asking. Keep praying!
What a good thought, to include your children!
What stood out to you from the above and why?
That we are in a battle, I felt the battle last week, I had a couple of mountaintop type experiences where God clearly opened paths for reconciliation followed fast and hard by doubt and fear.
My conversation with my sister, and another with my daughter in law were blessed, but afterward I was assailed with doubts about many things and fear, I felt like withdrawing.
Life might bloom within us, I want this to be in me, to see fruit in my life that brings glory to God. I want the life and fruit that comes from having a heart of flesh, soft for God and people and His purposes. Not a heart that is hard and can’t produce any good thing because it is a slave to comfort and approval.
Time we’ve spent feeding our idols, ugh they do take time, sucking away the energy I owe and want to give to Christ. I pray to see them ever more clearly, to not be endlessly enslaved by them, Christ has paid to high a price to set me free.
How was Rebecca feeding her comfort idol? Through food and ‘escaping’ into television, the feeling that this ‘me time’ is what will rejuvenate me.
How is she replacing her comfort idol? With reading and Bible study, intentional, purposeful things, that focus her on Christ
What did God do in her life? What stands out to me most about Rebecca is her understanding of her gospel identity, that she is dearly dearly loved. We are continually blessed by her excitement in Christ!
I love that she includes that the peace she gained, the intimacy she feels came slowly.
How was Rachael feeding her control idol? She said there were many ways, but the internet was the one she focused on, she was feeling as if she could find the answers she needed to be in control of her life.
How is she replacing her control idol? By increasingly, daily, repenting, going to the Lord, praying, listening to hymns, and reading His word
She recognized her idols fail her they bring pain. She realized that she was living for a pain free trouble free life.
What did God do in her life? God revealed to her that her control issues were placing burdens on her children she needed to accept them for who they are and recognize the battles going on in their hearts
This is profound, she began to see her trials as blessings that drew her closer to God.
She sees God is calling her to go higher, she is increasingly recognizing and letting go, of her control idol
