She’s an instructor at Curves.
One of three.
I’ve asked leading questions of all of them
while I was working the machines.
But it was “Sandi” in whom I sensed a little spark.
So it seemed time to have a real conversation about what matters most.
I asked her to lunch.
And so we went — last Wednesday.
Before we were even out of the Curves parking lot, she initiated things, telling me she had really been thinking about one of my questions — and so I asked her if I could tell her my story. She said, “Yes.” And so, before we even arrived at the restaurant, I told her how I had come to believe Jesus was God, and what He meant to me.
When we sat down I told her I sensed a hunger in her. That I wondered if God was wooing her.
She said, “I don’t mean to make you feel badly — but I don’t think you can fix the emptiness in me over lunch.”
I nodded. We ordered our salads. She was quiet, and I waited, wanting to hear whatever it was that was keeping her from Christ.
She had some of the usual objections. I had them once too. I don’t think you can live in this world and not have these questions because you hear them all the time. She said:
- I don’t like it when people think they know the way to heaven or imply that the other religions are wrong.
- What about the people who never hear about Jesus?
I listened. I shared some of the things that Keller says in the wonderful message you will hear this week. Good truths I’ve heard before but expressed in fresh ways. Things we need to have in our hearts so we will be ready, as Peter says, to explain the hope that is within us. Oh — we’ll feel awkward — and we’ll stumble — especially if we care deeply about the person to whom we are speaking. When I’m with my sister Bonnie I get as quivery as jello — it’s just so important to me that she hear and understand — even though I know that is not up to me ultimately.
One of my all time favorite CD’s is Sara Grove’s Conversations, and the leading song describes exactly how tongue-tied I can get when I talk about what matters most. This is a good You-tube version:
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QVykEC1VIs
This is the chorus of “Conversations:”
I would like to share with you what makes me complete.
I don’t claim to have found the Truth, but I know it has found me. . .
the only thing that isn’t meaningless to me is Jesus Christ and and way he set me free.
This is all that I have. This is all that I am
I love the line: “I don’t claim to have found the Truth, but I know it has found me…”
That’s how it is. I didn’t know if Jesus was wooing Sandi or not, but I thought He might be.
I do know that without Him we are SO blind. One of her objections shocked me, and I knew she had it because the blindfold was still in place. She said:
It doesn’t seem right to me that, at the end of my life,
if I have refused to be forgiven by Jesus, that I go to hell.
I asked,
But wouldn’t you be so thankful that there is a way to be forgiven?
When I dropped her off, back at Curves, she said “I’m sorry to have this time end.” I thought You are not shutting down. He must be wooing you. And Saturday, when I went in, she had a gift for me.
Somehow I think I’m not the only one sowing seeds — somehow I think that beneath the dark soil, a little seed might be germinating. Life might be coming…
I hope you’ll take copious notes on the Keller message to prepare you for “conversations.” A few of the things I remember are:
NO OTHER FOUNDER OF ANY RELIGION
MAKES THE CLAIMS JESUS MADE
WHO DOES HE SAY THAT HE IS?
THE GREAT I AM
HE DIDN’T HAVE A BEGINNING
HE WAS WITH GOD, CREATING THE WORLD
HE MADE THE SEAS
AND ALL THAT SWIM WITHIN
HE SAYS OUTLANDISH THINGS SUCH AS
I KEEP SENDING PROPHETS AND WISE MEN TO YOU
AND YOU KEEP KILLING THEM
HIS CLAIMS ARE ASTOUNDING
AS R. C. SPROUL THUNDERS:
HE COMES AS THE DOOR

He comes as the Resurrection.
He comes as the Light.
He comes as the Way, and the Truth, and the Life.
He comes as the Good Shepherd.
He comes as the Vine.
He is the One who before Abraham was, is.
The passage we are studying this week is one of the richest in all of Scripture. It’s so rich that I long for you to take extra time. One reason people fast a meal during Lent is to give themselves extra time with the Lord. Consider that if you are pressed for time.
Not only does it explore the fascinating question, “Who does Jesus say He is?” but the frightening but important truth that so many who think they have found the way may, indeed, not have found the way.
I’ll share more about this in the Bible study lesson — a thought that is swirling and swirling around in me — and which I long to have a conversation with you, my dear sisters who are seeking the truth.
SUNDAY/MONDAY: ICE-BREAKERS
1. What stands out to you from the above, and why?
2. Can you think of a moment in your life when you began to realize that Jesus might be God — not just a prophet — but God? If so, what do you remember?
3. Report on your Lenten discipline. I am going to suggest that this week your discipline be doing all of this lesson! But walk in His Spirit.
Bible Study: Monday – Wednesday
This is the fierce argument the Pharisees have with Jesus and it is dense truth — so go slowly during this holy Lenten week. I’m suggesting two Keller sermons: one for 2.50 and one free sermon. Hopefully you can listen to both, for I would hate to have you miss the one that is entitled I Am The I Am. The second one supplements, but goes into a bit more detail about the question swirling about in my mind, and which I had when I talked to Sandi. The Pharisees were in bondage, but they couldn’t see it. They thought they were saved, but they weren’t. How many people who think they are Christians, are even in Bible teaching churches, are deceived, and are not really saved? Here are the big questions: If you are religious to feel good about yourself — if you are doing Bible study, giving to the poor, and going to church — all to feel good about yourself, but not loving God — is it possible you are not saved, even if you can explain the gospel? That question has been swirling about in me, and continues as I read this passage and listen to these sermons. And here’s another one. Is there a danger in issuing an invitation that is more on the basis of what you will get from God than on who He is? Keller has said that we should confront idols right off the bat. These are the questions swirling in my mind. We’ll take them up at the end — so please get to the end!
I am so thankful for this group. The very fact that you are doing the lessons and listening to the sermons without getting a lot of praise for doing so is evidence to me that we have true seekers of God here. How you bless me!
Let’s do the lesson — and then contemplate these hard questions. Ask God to help us all!
It’s the Festival of Lights. Jesus is in the Temple surrounded by candles, and He astounds them all as He claims:
I AM the Light of the World.
Background for sermon passage
1. Read the dynamite of John 8:12-20.
A. Describe the debate.
B. Who does Jesus think He is? Find several astounding statements and comment on them. (Go slowly.)
2. Read John 8:21-30
A. Find evidence for blindfolds on the Pharisees.
B. What does He tell them they have to do to be saved and how do they respond? (vs. 24-25)
C. What do you think He means by verse 28? (I’m asking because I am puzzled. Does He mean some of them will believe?)
3. Read John 8:31-38
They are trusting in the fact that they are “offspring” of Abraham. Yet what evidence does Jesus give that they are not saved?
4. Read John 8:39-47
A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family.
B. Why does Jesus say they do not believe? (vs. 43) What does this mean?
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller?
D. Give an example of how a surrender to God in any area of your life led to real freedom. Several of you last week: Chris, Rebecca, Anne, Elizabeth, Pollyanna — more — commented on your increasing awareness of God’s goodness. This, I believe, is what helps us surrender. Eager for testimonies!
5. Read John 8:48-59
A. Trace the debate — the accusations of the Pharisees and the responses of Jesus.
48: accusation
49-51 response
52-53 accusation
54-56 response
57 accusation
58 response
B. What are the implications of “Before Abraham was, I AM.”
C. How did the Pharisees respond? Why, do you think?
Thursday/Friday (The sermon, or if possible sermons)
The main sermon is 2.50 (I think I promised no more than 10 this Lent, so may have reached my promise limit. But this one is so key I’d hate to have you miss it. However, if you really can’t afford it, the supplemental one covers some of the same issues, but is on a different passage. )
The first link is to the 2.50 sermon entitled I AM the I AM.

6. Give us your notes, and as you write them, think of how you might make these statements when you have “conversations” with unbelievers.
7. He also addresses how it is so easy to trust in religion instead of God. What notes do you have?
Supplemental Sermon: How To Find The Way http://sermons2.redeemer.com/sermons/how-find-way
8. If you listened to this, write down key points.
9. Would love your input on the questions swirling in my head:
A. If you are religious to feel good about yourself — if you are doing Bible study, giving to the poor, and going to church — all to feel good about yourself, but not loving God — is it possible you are not saved, even if you can explain the gospel?
B. Is there a danger in issuing an invitation that is more on the basis of what you will get from God than on who He is? If so, how would that impact your evangelistic conversations?
Saturday:
10. What’s your take-a-way for the week and why?

1. Read the dynamite of John 8:12-20.
A. Describe the debate. – The debate is with the Pharisees not liking that Jesus is testifying about himself and no one else is there to confirm it. Jesus is trying to tell them who he is and where He came from and where He is going, but they want no part of listening or believing what he says.
B. Who does Jesus think He is? Find several astounding statements and comment on them. (Go slowly.) – *Jesus is the light of the world, the everlasting life if you follow him. Our path of life will never be covered over if we follow Jesus, he will make our path clear, IF we follow Him and listen to his teachings. * He is one with the Father. Where Jesus is, the Father is also, they will never be apart. * He is the truth. You can always know that what Jesus says is true and it is fulling God’s law.
As I read this passage I see Jesus so sure of who he is that he does not need the approval of the multitude. He needs just the approval of His Father. vs 26 He seems to stop himself and does not continue what he is thinking because this is not where God wants him to go on this subject. vs 36 he says you are trying to kill me because my message does not find a place in your heart. How many people do we talk to everyday, family, friends, coworkers that do not allow the message to find a place in their heart, but yet Jesus did not give up, he kept sharing, kept healing, kept loving. i liked your video from Sara Groves but it made me think of Keith Green “Song to My Parents”
Pretty song!
That’s a great song! Keith Green was an anointed artist! Thanks.
I don’t know that song, Marjorie — but I do love Keith Green.
Yes, Jesus did keep on!
FYI 🙂 http://youtu.be/QgphV4FHdNw
2. Read John 8:21-30
A. Find evidence for blindfolds on the Pharisees.
I’m not sure I found the answer to this one. The “Jews” question Him initially saying how will you die?, are you going to kill youself? But are these the Pharisses? He says they are from below and he is from above. They continue to ask who He is. He tells them they do not understand about His Father, but one day they will.
Not sure if this is what you are looking for here?
B. What does He tell them they have to do to be saved and how do they respond? (vs. 24-25)
They are told they will die in their sins. They must believe in Him (I suppose they needed the childlike faith here!).
They continue to question and ask Him who He is.
C. What do you think He means by verse 28? (I’m asking because I am puzzled. Does He mean some of them will believe?)
I think when he says “lifted up” He means when they kill Him. That begins the process of the resurrection, and maybe they will believe after they experience that.
3. Read John 8:31-38
They are trusting in the fact that they are “offspring” of Abraham. Yet what evidence does Jesus give that they are not saved?
They continue to be slaves to their sins. He also says they have no room for Him and what He says.
As I read comments in my email this morning I wondered if by telling them that the Father bears testimony as to the truth of His statements, if Jesus was encouraging some of them to pray to the Father, and find God the Father bearing witness in their hearts, if they would but ask to be convicted of the truth.
The Pharisees thought they were Gods people, they thought they served God, they thought they had offered up their lives to Him. But in truth, they used Him to meet the needs of the idols of their hearts, greed, power, control, approval. It is very sobering to think about how blind they were.
A. Find evidence for blindfolds on the Pharisees.
Their questions; So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, “Who are you?”
This statement;
they did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father.
Jesus warnings that they cant follow Him, they are of the world & will die in their sin.
B. What does He tell them they have to do to be saved and how do they respond? (vs. 24-25)
To believe that Jesus is who He says He is, They ask Him again who He is
C. What do you think He means by verse 28? (I’m asking because I am puzzled. Does He mean some of them will believe?)
These verses came to mind first;
Romans 14:10b-11-For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God;
for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”
Philpians 2:9-11 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
But it also occurred to me that they may have realized who He was after they crucified Him, and yet continued in their sin, refusing to repent.
They are trusting in the fact that they are “offspring” of Abraham. Yet what evidence does Jesus give that they are not saved?
That they are trying to kill Him, His words find no place in them, they are slaves to sin, they are listening to the lies of their father, doing what they hear from him (Satan)
A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family.
Believing the truth vs believing lies
Seeking God by faith vs refusal to trust what cant be understood
Love for Christ , abiding in Him vs Love for self, feeling that one is self reliant, meeting ones own needs
B. Why does Jesus say they do not believe? (vs. 43)
ESV;
John 8:43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.
The Message;
Joh 8:43 Why can’t you understand one word I say? Here’s why: You can’t handle it.
What does this mean?
They are unwilling, unable to lay down their own agendas, their own pride. This isn’t how they thought their Messiah would behave. They are unable/ unwilling to humble themselves
Like The Message paraphrase!
2. Read John 8:21-30
A. Find evidence for blindfolds on the Pharisees.
V.22. They totally missed the point Jesus made here. When Jesus said, ‘you will die in your sin’-‘where I am going you can’t come’, they were more more concerned with what he meant by ‘going somewhere’ and wondered if he was going to ‘kill himself’, than they were about their sin separating them from God. It was because they were blind- they didn’t believe He was God. I really see here, and I could be off, how their works-righteousness blinded them. It is a form of idolatry- worshiping morality over worshiping Him.
V25, and V27
B. What does He tell them they have to do to be saved and how do they respond? (vs. 24-25)
He told them they would die in their sins unless they believe Jesus is God. They responded saying, “Who are you”?
C. What do you think He means by verse 28? (I’m asking because I am puzzled. Does He mean some of them will believe?)
I think he is speaking to the Jews who did believe-if you read on. There is a difference between just believing, and being a disciple. Even the demons believe.
Rebecca, I think you are right, especially about the idolatry peace. They had power, control and prestige and Jesus was messing with that.
3. Read John 8:31-38
They are trusting in the fact that they are “offspring” of Abraham. Yet what evidence does Jesus give that they are not saved?
V33. They don’t see they are slaves to sin and are bound in their sin still. In V.37 they have no room for his word. If they don’t see they are still bound in their sin they won’t see their need for Him, even if they believe. They won’t see a need to abandon themselves to Him and follow Him because they are trusting that their righteousness comes by being Abraham’s offspring.
Jesus says they are seeking to kill him and have no room for his word so God is not their father-later he tells them their true father is the devil. Also he says they don’t love him. I think that is important.
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller?
Yes, I think Satan allows people to delight in their sins until he has them trapped/ enslaved to them. Then even when a sinner can sometimes see the destruction of the sins, they are addicted and are afraid to let go.
There is a lie that if I surrender to God, all the fun will be drained from my life. If I trust Him, He will make me miserable
I feel so sad thinking about the great cost of rebellion
A. Describe the debate.Well Jesus describes Himself as light of the world. That whoever follows Him will have the light of life. So the Pharisees saw this as him giving testimony about Himself again. They don’t believe Him or His claims. So He then says God is His father…They don’t believe Him.
B. Who does Jesus think He is? Find several astounding statements and comment on them. (Go slowly.)
Two really stood out to me as I read.
I don’t get this one…15b You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.
Maybe He is saying it is not His job to judge on earth but He does what the Father says, yet at the end Jesus is the Judge…Right? It is important because He is claiming authority along with the Father.
The next one struck me. 20bno one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
This just makes me stand in awe and in worship of the ONE who is in control of all things. Even though they wanted to arrest Him they could not because the Father had not declared the time. I am just like WOW because the same is for us. Things that could happen to us will not only with the Father’s permission of the proper time…His Sovereignty! AMAZING!
Angela,
Loved what you brought out here: “This just makes me stand in awe and in worship of the ONE who is in control of all things. Even though they wanted to arrest Him they could not because the Father had not declared the time. I am just like WOW because the same is for us. Things that could happen to us will not only with the Father’s permission of the proper time…His Sovereignty! AMAZING!”
Thanks Rebecca!!
On B — Laura Marie said this — what do you think?
The pharisees may have been from the lineage of Abraham in fesh, however they proved in behavior and spirit to be sons of the devil and not God because there was no truth in them!
Hmmm… I’ve been thinking about this. I guess some of the Pharisees could have been considered to be sons of the devil, in the same way one might describe those who are against Jesus as sons of the devil. Some definitely tried to trap Jesus. Jesus did refer to (some of) them as a “brood of vipers.”
But I wouldn’t want to paint the whole group with a broad brush stroke. Nicodemus was a Pharisee, and the apostle Paul had been a Pharisee. Many of the Pharisees were self-righteous; I think one of the problems was that they did actually “know” the truth, that Jesus claimed to be God. But they wanted to be in charge of a religion they could control; they wanted to “call the shots.” And if they allowed themselves to acknowledge Jesus as God, they would have to give up control.
Even today, some pretty decent (most of the time)”church people” can turn nasty when their status quo is challenged. I really don’t know where to draw the line between pride, other sin, and being a child of the devil. But I do know there was hope for the Pharisees, because some of them did believe.
6. & 7. “I am the I Am” sermon notes. Sorry for the length, it’s always hard for me to condense when he makes such great points!
1.Who does He think He is?
“Before Abraham, I am”. Jesus is in an increasingly hostile situation. He makes enormous claims—“I can set you free”. They say they’ve never been slaves—they don’t mean politically, they are talking about spiritual, inner freedom—they are blinded to their enslavement. They think because they are Abraham’s children, followers of Biblical religion, good, moral, religious—they are “free”. Side note, we are hooked on the Waltons and it’s so interesting how they handle religion. It’s just like this scenario. The other night they were preparing for a big revival and one son said “Mama, I’m not a sinner…and she says “oh, I know you’re not…and tomorrow you’ll get baptized!” It was just so blatant—the idea of moralism. I grew up with a degree of that, I thank Him immensely for showing me Truth. Jesus says to be religious and moral is just as much spiritual slavery as to be irreligious and immoral.
I LOVED his part—Imagine a slave and a son of a great head of household—they look alike, they both live in the home, they are fed by the master, they obey the master. But the servant has a slavish relationship—lives in fear that if he doesn’t perform, he could be thrown out. The son has an assurance of an unconditional love. Jesus says you have a slavish relationship to God. Unless you come to the father through Me you will remain slaves. I can give you a relationship with the father based on intimacy and security—not pride compulsion, fear. A teacher, prophet wants to change your behavior—I want to change your status. FROM SLAVERY TO SONSHIP.
Jesus tells them that through Him they can be assured their relationship with God will last forever. They say ‘who do you think you are’? He tells them Abraham rejoiced to see MY day. Abraham like all of Judaism was looking for the “day” –it is the day the Lord comes back. He will make everything right. He says I am the fulfillment of all Abraham’s hope of salvation.
They mockingly accuse Him of insanity and say—‘are you a contemporary of Abraham?!’ He tells them again, ‘before Abraham was, I am.’ They exploded inside, recognizing Jesus is using the Name God gave in Exodus 3, “I Am”. Jesus’ claim, “I AM” means “I have no beginning; I am the cause of all causes, transcendent above the universe.” Profound revelation of understanding, and of the heart.
Yahweh. The highest expression of divine self-reference. The stoned Him for blasphemy.
2. Who do they think He is?
I love the CS Lewis quote, so here is all of it:
“I’m trying to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic–on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg–or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” (Mere Christianity , C. S. Lewis)
He is either Demon or Divine, You must either crown Him or kill Him .Only Jesus can forgive every sin because every sin is against Him—because He is God, Creator. He calls Himself THE Son of God—He inherits everything, He is equal with God. He tells them, “I keep sending you prophets and wise men…”– He is behind it all. If He is not God, He can’t promise you total forgiveness, a place in eternity. If He is not God, the Cross should destroy your faith in God. If He is not God—the Cross is cruelty. BUT, if He IS God, the Cross gives us a view of God we’ve never had before. Either your life is transformed by Him, or you are out to kill Him.
3. Who do you think He is?
This may be my favorite point. He is always trying to get us OFF THE FENCE! If you are sitting on the fence, both legs are pointed to one side or the other—skepticism or —there really is no middle. He is either Demon or Divine, You must either crown Him or kill Him. But, those out to kill Him are the most likely to find Him—those with indifference towards Him are not.
To the skeptics:
1) Look at His wisdom and shrewdness—He say’s “love your enemies”.
2) Look at the beauty of His life—He says “if I glorify myself it means nothing”. His teaching was egocentric, but His life was not. There has never been anyone to make claims like Jesus who has been able to sustain a movement. The reason everyone else dies is egocentric teachers have egocentric lives—but not Jesus. **Jesus exemplified tenderness without compromise, conviction without condemnation, humility without insecurity.
P.T. Forsythe: “If God is not like Jesus then He is less than the God we pray for and we need.”
3)Look at his claims—He is either demon or divine, but could a demon teach like this, love like this, change his followers like this?–NO
To the Christians on the fence:
Others on the fence believe all the doctrines, they go to Him in trouble, but they don’t throw themselves at His feet and treat Him for Who He is—GOD. Keller says, take the limits off your allegiance. **Are you asking Him to be your assistant—‘don’t call me, I’ll call you—I’ll do this IF You do that…’
Christmas means into your life comes GOD. Get rid of your tiny little ambitions of the grad school you want—He will take you to the stars! Get rid of the idea that you can/should tell him what he should do—He is God. If the Son sets you free you’ll be free indeed.
Great post!, I love this especially;
“I LOVED his part—Imagine a slave and a son of a great head of household—they look alike, they both live in the home, they are fed by the master, they obey the master. FROM SLAVERY TO SONSHIP.”
Elizabeth, I loved that quote that Chris mentioned-so good. You are making me not be able to wait much longer to hear the sermons!
I would like to have been there when Jesus claimed His deity causing them to remember back to the burning bush when God told Moses He was I AM. That must have set them on their ears!
5. Read John 8:48-59
A. Trace the debate — the accusations of the Pharisees and the responses of Jesus.
48: accusation: They call Jesus a demon-possessed Samaritan
49-51 response: Jesus responds He is not demon possessed, He is the Son of God; He promises eternal life for those who obey Him
52-53 accusation: They again claim He is demon-possessed, and ask “Who do You think You Are?”
54-56 response: He tells them God, whom they claim to believe in, has given Him this place of glory
57 accusation: they say He couldn’t know of Abraham—He’s too young
58 response: He tells them He existed long before Abraham—He has always been in existence—no beginning, no cause
B. What are the implications of “Before Abraham was, I AM.”
He proclaims His divinity. He used God’s Name from Exodus 3 for Himself—implying He has always been in existence—no beginning, no cause.
C. How did the Pharisees respond? Why, do you think?
They stoned Him as a blasphemer. I think they were blinded, enslaved by their idols of control, power…enraged in fear.
Good — did you notice when they said, “You are not 50 years old?” He was 33 or less — but he must have looked older. I think Yancey noticed that…
Really interesting–I didn’t even think about how He must have looked, that makes sense–I guess I was being harsh but I thought they were just being sarcastic about his age!
As to Jesus age, maybe they didn’t want to admit he was as young as 30 because he was shellacking them (that means whipping them, thought that might be a Canadian expression only) with his debating skills. LOL 🙂
Interested comment about age 50. I was wondering if it was because they sensed His wisdom. His real physical trials (in comparison to others) came later, but the stress of knowing what was to come could have aged Him ????
John 8:39-47
A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family
Just want to share this concerning verse 44 …” you are of your father, the devil and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there there is no truth in him.”
The pharisees may have been from the lineage of Abraham in fesh, however they proved in behavior and spirit to be sons of the devil and not God because there was no truth in them!
If Jesus is your true Father, truth is in you because you carry His Spirit within you!
We are to be a reflection of Him. Which means we are to walk in Light!
I think you just answered Angela’s question above.
Awesome!
While sharing this revelation, the song by Hillsong ” I Could Sing of Your Love Forever”, is playing on my Pandora!
God is Awesome!
Laura Marie,
Isn’t that cool when God does that? A kiss from Him..Thanks for sharing, love it! 🙂
Happy Anniversary Dee! We are all so blessed by the model of you and Steve. Praying for you today–to be filled with sweet memories and the joy ahead~
Elizabeth — you are amazing. Thank you for remembering. I always liked it that it was the 1st day of Spring.
Not amazing at all, just God of All Comfort is one of my top 3 favorite books of all time, and one I was very thankful there were no Cliff Notes for 😉 ..that and I’m weird about dates~
Yes, Elizabeth you ARE amazing-truly humble. You have mentioned how much you learn from me, well I think it is the contrary-I learn so much from YOU!
Wow 🙂 Happy Anniversary, Dee! And Happy Spring everyone.
2.A. Find evidence for blindfolds on the Pharisees.
He is repeating Him self to them (interesting) that He is going away. They ignore the truth of the message that they will die in their sins!!! They demand, Who are you? They were blind. Their eyes were veiled by satan.
B. What does He tell them they have to do to be saved and how do they respond? (vs. 24-25) if you do not believe that I am he you will die in your sin. their response was to ask Him who are you.
C. What do you think He means by verse 28? (I’m asking because I am puzzled. Does He mean some of them will believe?)
28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. He is speaking here that the very people in the room will lift him on the cross and crucify Him, then they will recognize Him as the Son of God.
3. Read John 8:31-38
They are trusting in the fact that they are “offspring” of Abraham. Yet what evidence does Jesus give that they are not saved? They have no place in His family, they are slaves and not free, they are looking for a way to kill Him and have no room for His word. They aren’t even doing what father Abraham would have them do.
4. Read John 8:39-47 A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family. God’s family would love Him, understand what is said, believe He is from the Father, do the works of Father Abraham and believe in Him.
Satan’s family refused to do the works of Abraham, they can’t understand Him, can’t love Him, can’t believe Him and cannot bear to hear His word.
B. Why does Jesus say they do not believe? (vs. 43) What does this mean?
43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. They are deaf and blinded by their father, satan. They are satisfied in their sin with their idols and don’t want to change.
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller?
I agree 100%. Enslavement is in the beginning or for a season great until it’s time to pay the piper. By the time the piper comes for payment they are so enslaved they believe slavery is better than freedom Jesus offers. They are blind.
Kim — it is so fun to have you here and see your enthusiasm. So glad you are coming to the meeting for sonrise when I come to Kearney!
Insightful Kim–Enslavement is in the beginning or for a season great until it’s time to pay the piper. By the time the piper comes for payment they are so enslaved they believe slavery is better than freedom Jesus offers. They are blind.
And I agree that you are such a JOY to have here. This morning I was so sleepy-eyed (somehow 5 year old convinced me to leave nearly all the lights on between his room and mine…and door open–still no daddy home yet & I’m a softy!)…but when I glanced at your avatar you looked like a little green stem flower with a beautiful pink tulip on top and I just smiled because that is so YOU! A little joy-filled tulip speaking the Gospel 😉
lol…love that description!
Thank you, Dee and Elizabeth, your comments blessed me to happy tears.
Elizabeth, I tried squinting my eyes but I just can’t see the tulip. 😉 Here’s a funny thing though – my favorite flowers are pink tulips! I am not kidding you can ask my hubby.
2. Read John 8:21-30
A. Find evidence for blindfolds on the Pharisees.
They asked questions like “will he kill himself?” “who are you?” They didn’t understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. (vs.27)
B. What does He tell them they have to do to be saved and how do they respond? (vs. 24-25)
They needed to believe He was the Son of God. They ask who He is.
C. What do you think He means by verse 28? (I’m asking because I am puzzled. Does He mean some of them will believe?)
I think that he does mean that, as verse 30 attests that many believed in Him as He spoke.
3. Read John 8:31-38
They are trusting in the fact that they are “offspring” of Abraham. Yet what evidence does Jesus give that they are not saved?
I’m thinking it’s because He knew they were still conspiring to kill Him. Also in verse 34 He tells them that everyone who commits a sin is a slave to sin. They did not know forgiveness of sins.
That is sobering to realize He knew they were conspiring to kill HIm.
D. Give an example of how a surrender to God in any area of your life led to real freedom.
I was standing in my closet and “what if” thoughts began coming at me concerning my job. Immediately the Holy Spirit spoke over those thoughts and basically said that worrying about things that probably won’t happen is not His way. Approval from Him is the only approval needed and He would protect me if I needed it. He reminded me to speak truth to my soul and rest in Him. In surrendering to truth I was free in that moment and my heart began to rejoice in Him.
Kim, this is beautiful!
Thank you, Anne.
4. Read John 8:39-47
A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family.
Satan: Liars, murderers, haters.
God: Truth seekers, life bringers, lovers of God and one another.
B. Why does Jesus say they do not believe? (vs. 43) What does this mean?
They couldn’t handle the truth. If they believed, they would have to repent, leave their wicked ways. It was more than they could do on their own. They didn’t recognize their need of a Savior to do it for them.
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller?
Yes, I do. That’s why Jesus followers need to be examples of freedom in Christ. Life is still a party, it’s just a different party! A Jesus party! Although I think the intellectual follows the moral as a way to explain why they don’t believe.
I’ve been listening to and worshipping all day with the new Passion recording, White Flag. The title track is about raising our white flag and surrendering. So fitting for this question!
Surrendering the control of my children’s lives has led to freedom. This morning I sat in the car with my youngest son Ben, who is 11, who didn’t want to go into school and take a math test. He told me he was sick at first, but the Holy Spirit inside me caused me to pause and ask questions. Finally the tears came and the truth was revealed. I told him I was proud of him, that we knew he was doing his best (math is hard for him) and that I knew he would pass 5th grade. 🙂 Then I prayed for him. He doesn’t show a lot of emotion and we all want to see our kids instantly better after we pray for them. I didn’t get that from him. He dried his tears, slung on his backpack and left the car wordlessly. I said out loud in the car “God I know you love him more than I do, I’m leaving it at that.” And I had peace, even though I was sad for him.
When I got home I realized he left his lunch in the car. It’s a 30 minute drive back to school but I decided to take it to him and just stay in the city for the rest of the day. When I saw him his face lit up. I asked how the math test went, and he said it wasn’t graded yet (not really what I asked :). But he had peace and I felt the freedom in giving the parenting reins over to Jesus. It’s a constant process and I don’t always surrender -but I trust in His love for my kids and I know the power of prayer when my wisdom falls short. That’s what I want them to take away when they leave home, how much He loves them…so they in turn can surrender their lives.
Love, love this, Kim. “Life is still a party, it’s just a different party! A Jesus party!” I was listening to “I could sing of your love forever” Hillsong (Laura Marie’s suggestion, thanks, Laura) and your words came into my mind again! Doesn’t it make you just want to dance in worship!
I can’t take credit for Anne Meredith’s party but I like it too. 😉
It’s all about Jesus. 🙂
Just think of the party we are going to have up in heaven! I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
Sorry, Thanks Anne Meredith! Love the Jesus party concept! And it IS all about Jesus, isn’t it.
Oh — can so picture Ben. So good you drew him out. Great job!
Thanks! He’s a sweetie.
WOW–Anne Meredith–this scene of you and your son so moved me and ministered to me. Keep those stories coming–I am learning so much from you! “the Holy Spirit inside me caused me to pause and ask questions. Finally the tears came and the truth was revealed.” WOW.
thanks Elizabeth. I was listening to Louie Giglio this morning and he said “out of bows of brokeness come arrows of healing.” I think that’s what was going on this morning in my car. Glad God used it to minister to you.
I’ve always really liked Louie Giglio–ever since hearing him LONG ago in college, in his pre-Passion day (now I’ve REALLY aged myself 😉
That’s okay, I’m almost 44…the age of his wife I think!
Anne, I love this: “I trust in His love for my kids and I know the power of prayer when my wisdom falls short. That’s what I want them to take away when they leave home, how much He loves them…so they in turn can surrender their lives”. Thank you:)
2. Read John 8:21-30
A. Find evidence for blindfolds on the Pharisees. They could not see that all of their “religion” and “good works” were not what saves a person. They missed the Savior right in front of their faces! They just could not see it.
B. What does He tell them they have to do to be saved and how do they respond? (vs. 24-25)Believe that He is He. They say, who are you? Yet He has told them over and over! Oh so thick they are.
C. What do you think He means by verse 28? (I’m asking because I am puzzled. Does He mean some of them will believe?) I wonder if it does mean some will believe after He is lifted up on the cross. They will see what God is doing then believe all He had said before?? Not sure.
You are being such good seekers of the truth!
Just had an encouraging talk with my publisher who told me the President is very excited about the book!
I will know their title tomorrow. I’m a little nervous, but trusting if it is right, that I’ll know it!
PRAYING! AND REJOICING!!!
Wooohoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Let us know tomorrow!!!!!!
Excited and praying for you.
Oh this is so exciting!
Cool! Keep us posted.
Praying it is right and you’ll know it, Dee:)
Dee, this is wonderful! Praying they will come up with the right title. I am so happy for you and for all of the people who will do the study. Lives will be changed! How exciting!
How exciting Dee. Will be praying for wisdom for the publisher.
I just came across this quote by Eugene Peterson and love it:
“When we submit our lives to what we read in Scripture, we find that we are not being led to see God in our stories but our stories in God’s. God is the larger context in which our stories find themselves.”
I love Eugene Peterson. My son Ben asked for a Message Bible. He’s finally graduating from a cartoon bibles!
🙂 I’m getting more visual; maybe I should switch to a cartoon Bible!
Dee, do you have a particular commentary you like best? I don’t usually use them and know I probably should–if I do it’s Matthew Henry, but then there are so many choices it gets overwhelming for me. Just wondered if you have a favorite, or if there’s one you don’t like/trust as much too.
I do have several sets of commentaries — including Matthew Henry and Calvin which I use a lot — the Pulpit commentaries and the Green ones they use at Dallas (how’s that for a title — they are up at the cottage) — but I find I tend to go to individual commentaries on individual books the most. I use anything by Derek Kidner or John Stott. Have favorite ones on favorite individual books. Spurgeon’s Treasury of David — and Spurgeon in general, though he is wordy and flowery, I still love him.
This is really helpful Dee, thank you. One (Austin) website I like to use lets you search by verse and then gives all those you mentioned–and more, so this will really help me focus on just a few. Not sure of the “green ones” though! I tried looking at DTS’ site…but I’ll stick with Henry, Calvin, Kidner, Stott and you know I love Spurgeon 😉
What’s the Austin website?
http://www.preceptaustin.org/
Started by a couple at our old EV FREE church in Austin–it’s a bit over-whelming for me because there is so much to navigate through.
God has given me a couple of extra hours in what is a jammed packed week for me to work on our study and I am very grateful to be able to study this important lesson. Thanks for all the prayers for the prep to the Tea on Thursday. Preparations are going well.
1. A. Describe the debate.
Jesus starts right out by provoking them. He uses the opportunity provided by the Festival of Lights that they were celebrating to point out that he is the true light, the light that IS LIFE. The Pharisees basically say, ‘You have no proof. We’re not taking your word for that. You have no credible witness to prove that.’ Jesus says, ‘I am speaking the truth. I know who I am, where I came from and where I am going, even though you do not. You are not seeing the big picture so your judgment is inaccurate. If I were to judge it would be true judgment for my judgement is identical with God my Father. God the Father is my second witness that verifies ALL I am saying.’
B. Who does Jesus think He is? Find several astounding statements and comment on them. (Go slowly.)
‘I am the light of the world. No one who follows me walks in darkness. I have the light of life.’
‘My witness is true.” – I do not have to prove anything to you based on man’s standards.
“I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.” – He knew he was God, from heaven, and going back to be seated at the right hand of God, judging the earth.
“My judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.”
“The Father who sent me bears witness about me.” – God the Father knows exactly who I am.
this is really good Diane–your answer to 1. really helped me see a picture of the scene
Yes I love thinking about the festival of lights too…didn’t put that together until this bible study.
Wow on question 1.
2. Read John 8:21-30
A. Find evidence for blindfolds on the Pharisees.
They totally don’t “get it” when he talks about going away. They wonder if he is planning to kill himself.
He has just finished explaining who he is and yet they ask again.
B. What does He tell them they have to do to be saved and how do they respond? (vs. 24-25)
Jesus says, “Unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” In other words, unless you believe I am God, you will not be saved. They miss the entire point and ask who he is.
C. What do you think He means by verse 28? (I’m asking because I am puzzled. Does He mean some of them will believe?)
Yes. I think some Jews do believe after the crucifixion and resurrection.
3. Read John 8:31-38
They are trusting in the fact that they are “offspring” of Abraham. Yet what evidence does Jesus give that they are not saved?
Jesus says the fact that they are trying to kill him is proof that Jesus’ word has found no place in their hearts. Therefore, they are not following the Jesus’ truth that gives freedom. He also implies logically that they are slaves to sin and therefore have no place in the Father’s house as heirs even if they are Abraham’s offspring.
4. Read John 8:39-47
A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family.
Characteristics of Satan’s family:
Do the work of Satan
Cannot bear to hear Jesus’ words
Their will is to do Satan’s desires
Murderer, does not stand in the truth
No truth in Satan
Satan is a liar, his followers are liars
Does not hear God’s words
Characteristics of God’s family:
Loves God and Jesus
Speak the truth
Hears God’s words
4 B. Why does Jesus say they do not believe? (vs. 43) What does this mean?
In the English Standard Version it says, 43 “Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.” The only reason they could not bear to hear Jesus’ words would be because they were believing Satan’s lies that Jesus was a liar, an imposter, a false prophet or a scoundrel.
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller?
They believe freedom is in NOT submitting to God. They think it is God or their freedom, but the real choice is God or the devil’s lies.
5 A. Trace the debate — the accusations of the Pharisees and the responses of Jesus.
48: accusation – You are a demon-possessed Samaritan (half-breed).
49-51 response – I do not have a demon. I obey my Father. I do not seek my own glory, but the Father seeks my glory and he will judge you.
52-53 accusation — “You do have a demon. You say that anyone who obeys you will not die. Are you greater than Abraham and the other prophets who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?”
54-56 response – My Father glorifies me. You do not know God, but I know him. I keep his word. Your father Abraham saw by faith that my day would come and was glad.
57 accusation – How preposterous to say you knew Abraham. You are still young and he lived thousands of years ago.
58 response – Before Abraham was even born, I AM. I Am God.
B. What are the implications of “Before Abraham was, I AM.”
C. How did the Pharisees respond? Why, do you think?
They tried to stone Him. He was claiming to be God.
Just in case any of you are not subscribed, Rebekah Hardy just posted to the Mysterium Tremendum blog post. Chris, she mentions your email to her
Yah! Praise God!
Thanks elizabeth — That was the only week I did subscribe 🙂
Thank you Jesus! we are praying for you, Rebekah!
Yay !!!! Welcome Rebekah!!! I have been thinking of you so much 🙂 please join us
Rebekah Hardy has posted in Mysterium Tremendum, I know you will all want to minister to her.
Thanks Elizabeth, you are a quick one!
2. Read John 8:21-30
A. Find evidence for blindfolds on the Pharisees. – thru out this section of verses they kept asking Jesus who he was and guessing on what he was going to do from what he was saying to them. They just did not believe in him as the Son of Man
B. What does He tell them they have to do to be saved and how do they respond? (vs. 24-25) – Jesus tells them that they need to believe who he says he is or they will be dead to their sins and missing God in their lives. They again asked him who he is, they were just not getting it, or maybe they just weren’t listening like we tend to do sometimes.
C. What do you think He means by verse 28? (I’m asking because I am puzzled. Does He mean some of them will believe?) – I’ve read this verse in different translations and also in my bible study on the book of John by John McArthur and the side note in the bible study says that the part “when you lift up the Son of Man” it’s a reference to the impending crucifixion and in my Life Application study bible it adds “….on the cross” so I think that because of all Jesus went thru before the cross and on the cross and they saw that, and then they see Him rise from the dead, that will finally make them believe and know the truth of Jesus.
3. Read John 8:31-38
They are trusting in the fact that they are “offspring” of Abraham. Yet what evidence does Jesus give that they are not saved? – that they are living lives of sin, by wanting to kill Him because they don’t believe what He is saying to them. The Message Bible says it this way….”I know you are Abraham’s descendants. But I also know that you are trying to kill me because my message hasn’t yet penetrated your thick skulls.” (John 8:37 MSG). This made me laugh because I can see Jesus in my mind wanting to slap me silly when I keep missing the clue, the missing piece He is trying to give me to help me get thru my trials in life.
Julie, I like that, too! — that message hadn’t YET penetrated their thick skulls. It seems like I can “know” or even acknowledge something on the surface, but I until I let it sink in/give up control, I just don’t/can’t respond. But it seems there are so many layers to penetrate!! (and with each layer, I learn I am still hanging on to some attempt to control)
Oh how I can relate to that! If I would just “get it” wow how my life would be easier.
4. Read John 8:39-47
A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family. – satan’s family will tell lies about anything, they will deceive you just to try and pull you in to the family, they don’t care about doing what is right. God’s family on the other hand does not have lies in them, they tell the truth, and will do whatever it takes to please God and live as God has instructed.
B. Why does Jesus say they do not believe? (vs. 43) What does this mean? Here again the message bible says it very nicely I think…Why can’t you understand one word I say? Here’s why: You can’t handle it. (John 8:43 MSG). That pretty much sums it up I think. Unbelievers are afraid of what God may ask them to do, they may not be ready to give up the easy life they are accustomed to living. They don’t want to have to report to a higher authority figure, it’s much esker going around and pretending you. Didn’t know any better. But when it comes time for that final breath, they will all be scrambling to be in that relationship with Jesus they should of had all along.
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller? – Yes I do and I think I answered this in the above comments.
I’m still thinking about children of God vs children of the devil discussion (but I haven’t gotten that far in the questions myself — yet).
Paul wrote in Phil 3 “Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision; for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh, although I myself might have confidence even in the flesh. If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in the flesh, I far more: circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless. But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.”
Paul said that “as to the Law, [he was] a Pharisee” and he would have been found blameless if righteousness were judged by keeping the Law. And that was a “gain” to him at one time; it seemed good/ got him kudos from other religious folk. So according to this, he would have been a “son of the devil” not because he was doing wrong or even because he was persecuting the church, but because his confidence was in the Law and his ability to keep it rather than in Christ. Similarly, (some of) the Pharisees were children of the devil, not because they were jerks or even because they didn’t treat Jesus very well, but because their confidence was in their own moral behavior rather than in God. They were still thinking they were good and went to extremes to preserve their self-image.
Praying for you, Rebekah
4. Read John 8:39-47
A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family.
Jesus mentions illlegitimate children. This is definitely of Satan. Also lying; He says Satan is the Father of lies. Jesus says Abraham would not have plotted to kill Him; another sin of Satan. They cannot hear Him because they dont understand God’s language, only satans.
In contrast, Jesus says if they were of God then they would believe what He was saying. They would love Him and they would understand His language.
Starting at verse 44, I could really “feel” the scripture. It was really kind of creepy, reading about Satan and his characteristics! Yuck. What a dark being.
B. Why does Jesus say they do not believe? (vs. 43) What does this mean?
His language is unclear to them. They don’t understand God. They don’t understand that love and kindness are part of God’s language. They seem to only understand hatred.
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller?
Absolutely! The things of this world are enticing and beautiful. Wine tastes good and a little lightheadedness feels good. Those into sexual things make their bodies feel good.
I woke up this morning singing Twila Paris’s “How Beautiful”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJfSp_rceFs
Just wanted to share a quote with you from Bible Gateway’s Lent Devotions.
Today’s Quote
“A healthy Christian is one of the liveliest creatures on earth. When he is at work you may hear him sing. He cannot help it; do not blame him for a little noise. Let him sing, and laugh till he cries. Sometimes he cannot help it; he will burst if his soul may not have vent. When he begins to talk about his Lord his eyes flash fire. Some people hint that he is out of his mind; but those who know best assure us that he was never before so sane as now. Of course, the world thinks religion is such poor stuff that nobody could grow excited about it. To my mind, cold religion is the nastiest dish ever brought to table. True godliness is served up hot. Newness of life means a soul aglow with love to God, and therefore earnest, zealous, happy. Let the believing man have space for his larger life, swing for his grander joy. Nay, do not gag him; let him sing his new song. If any man out of heaven has a right to be happy, it is the man who lives in newness of life. Come, beloved, I want you to go home to-day with the resolve that the newness of life shall be more apparent in your walk. Do not live the old life over again. Why should you? What good would come of it?” — Charles Spurgeon, “Christ’s Resurrection and Our Newness of Life”
Diane, this quote is so very applicable to us. “Sometimes he cannot help it; he will burst if his soul may not have vent.” I was saying to God this morning that it feels like He is getting into every fiber of my being and it is both frightening and wondrous.
Numbers 21:5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”
21:6 Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.
21:7 And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
21:8 And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”
21:9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
John 3:11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.
3:12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
3:13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.
3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
3:15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
I had been dwelling on this verse;
John 8:28 So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.
I remember this, this morning from a sermon I have heard, I am not sure if it was a Keller sermon or not, it seems likely.
The Israelites had to look at the lifted up serpent by faith and they were healed. The words “When he sees it” indicated that not everyone would look, those that didn’t died.
Jesus was lifted up, but not everyone looks to Him in faith, those who do are saved those will not, die in their sin
Great explanation Chris to my question on that verse!
4. Read John 8:39-47
A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family.
If your father is God: If God is your father you would love Jesus because God sent Him-he didn’t come on his own, and He is God.
If your father is God: If you truly belong to God, you hear what He says.
If your father is Satan: Can’t hear what God says-can’t understand scripture or truth.
If your father is Satan: You DESIRE to carry out Satan’s desires rather than God’s.
If your father is Satan: satan’s lies usurp the truth of who Jesus is.
B. Why does Jesus say they do not believe? (vs. 43) What does this mean?
They are unable to hear because the belong to Satan, not God-God gives us ears to hear when we are His.
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller?
Oh Yes!
I am not sure why, but I have struggled hard in trying to write this.
I feel like the Old Testament story of Jacob, who wrestled with God and received both a blessing and a limp.
I struggled with whys, where we afflicted because I am stubborn? because I refuse to see something, do I need to confess some sin I can’t see? because I am prideful. If I had submitted more wholeheartedly to God might we have been spared? In my arrogance did I choose not to pray a hedge of protection around my son as the other moms did? Was this because I prayed “anything it takes” sort of prayers? Was it my husband’s fault? Was this because we didn’t forego drinking alcoholic beverages? Was this because I did a million things wrong? Why WHY Why!
What if I don’t “get it” whatever “it” is, will more discipline be visited on me? What if my husband should die, or another of my children, or all of my children, what if my dog gets hit by a car, what if something should happen to my grand daughter?
I have wanted to walk away from faith, I have truly hoped to die, wishing a car would come left of center and kill me, hoping for a terminal disease to end my life.
But I knew in my heart just as Peter did that there is no where else to go, John 6:68 “ Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
I have struggled with Gods omnipotence. Did he ordain this for us, or was He just managing it afterward?
Studying Job, showed that God is in control. He knows what he is doing. He was not angry with Job, He loved Job. When God spoke to Job, Job covered his mouth, acknowledged that he didn’t understand.
Looking at Isaiah, seeing Him humbled before God, and Gods provision for Isaiah’s sin, The burning bush study, seeing that God is holy, set apart, beyond comprehension. Coupled with dwelling on the gospel, as Keller helps us so well to do, praying that I could begin to believe that Christ loves ME, not just that His going to the cross was obedience to the Father, or that I have worth as a cell helping to make up the bride, not minimizing the personal worth the gospel conveys. All this has left me smaller, with less need to know everything, and yet larger, with a sense that I might matter to the holy infinite God of the universe.
All of my whys, the ones that grew such self loathing for me, I lay them at His feet. Even if they are true, I trust Jesus with them, to trust that He really will work all things together for good. I have eyes inside me now that see heaven on the horizon, I don’t feel the need to grasp at the now. I can be small like a child, I don’t need to know everything.
Who do I say that He is? I want to live like He is who He says He is.
Just printed this all off Chris, it’s such an incredibly raw, honest, rich testimony–I’m without words. This is profound: “All of my whys, the ones that grew such self loathing for me, I lay them at His feet. Even if they are true, I trust Jesus with them, to trust that He really will work all things together for good. I have eyes inside me now that see heaven on the horizon, I don’t feel the need to grasp at the now. I can be small like a child, I don’t need to know everything.”
I know I’m a broken record–but I really think you should consider writing, or maybe you do have a blog? In any case, I am praying that “silent ones” out there–who need to read this truth from someone who has really come through the fiery furnace–that they will find this today. Thank you for this Chris.
You are so beautiful in God’s sight, Chris S, as you turn toward him like this. Amen to Elizabeth’s comments.
This is such a beautiful testimony, Chris. These are more than just words in print because each word was born out of experience. You’re not just thinking about these things, these are things you have lived through and incorporated into your faith.
What I like about this post is that you ask some hard questions, Chris, then you turn right around and give some profound answers. It reminds me of the verse
“…work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure” Phil 2:12
I found this commentary:
To work out your own salvation is to solve by means of going to the very source of our salvation, going into the Word to renew our hearts and minds and to come into His presence with “fear and trembling.” The fear spoken here in NOT a fear of running from God, but a different type of fear, a “reverence”. A fear of not knowing that causes us to seek God and His presence. “Trembling” refers to a shaking due to weakness, but this is also a weakness of higher purpose-a weakness that brings us to depend on God.
In our “fear and trembling” we come into His presence to know and understand His ways and thoughts. We come to know our Savior and in doing so we become like Him, bringing us peace and harmony.
Oh Chris! THIS “But I knew in my heart just as Peter did that there is no where else to go” is everything. It is true freedom in knowing Him and being completely unhinged from this world. Nothing can compare to Him. BEAUTIFUL! You ARE living like He is who He says He is! You lead us as you walk through the greatest pain this world can inflict and find Him sufficient.
I agree with all our sisters, Chris. This is so good.
All my self loathing I lay at His feet. I understand.
Thank you Elizabeth, Diane, Susan, Kim, Anne & Dee, I had such a hard time to put this down, I truly felt drained by it.
Thank you all for your kind words. I feel that there is more to it than I am able to articulate now.
Elizabeth, no I don’t have a blog, I can’t think that I am interesting enough for that!
Kim I loved the commentary, thank you!
I have so appreciated Dee’s guidance and all of your prayers, so often I have not been able to pray much at all.
I am certain that these were used by God to keep me from wandering even longer in the wilderness.
Thank you!
You have a beautiful heart and your words minister to me. Thank you for taking the time to articulate what was on your heart. Isn’t reassuring to know when we can’t pray ourselves others are praying on our behalf? The beauty of His body in action.
Sermon 2-How to Find the Way-Keller
Christianity sounds incredibly narrow because we can only be saved by Christ. Yet the narrow gate leads to tremendous freedom. The gate to enter IS narrow, but the way is spacious. People think the narrow way is self-denial, and the broad ways is the easy life; instead, the broad way leads to narrowness, the absence of grace, and the narrow way leads to spaciousness-freedom.
The broad way is actually narrow because you’re chained to your performance. The broad way thinks all good people can find God. Broad way=doing “good” caring for the poor and praying…in order that you will be honored, heard. Those on this path are judgmental, prideful; trying to get leverage over others, and over God—so He “owes” them. It is trying to save yourself—‘I did this…now God will have to bless me’–saved by works. You can’t be sure of your salvation if you’re trying to win your gate by your good deeds. When you believe you’re winning the gate by your life, every incident is fighting for your life. He says “you already have your reward”—your reputation, your career, that’s it, it’s all you get—so you are constantly fighting a battle to keep it.
Narrow Way-the problem is me, I’m the sinner, saved by grace. Other religions say try hard to be good-and then be saved. Christianity says be saved, then the go the way.
*The gate comes first, then the Way—because He already fought for us. We are saved by grace alone.
How do we know we’re on the right way?
If you say “I’m not a Christian”—Jesus says make a decision. If salvation by works, there has to be a cut-off—and who could make the cut? I didn’t get it down, but I really liked the stone story with Peter.
If you say I am a Christian, there is freedom, it doesn’t matter what people do because your life is in Christ. If salvation is RELATIONSHIP, if it is Who I’m living for—that is an absolute difference.
*But you can lose your spaciousness, your freedom, not so much through sin, but because we forget the Gospel. We forget to rejoice in our spaciousness.
Good Elizabeth. I was struck by how differently I have always heard this passage taught — to think that many who believe themselves to be Christians are on the broad path to destruction — rather than those who are obvious unbelievers. Was this a different twist to you?
Dee–Yes, and it’s hard for me–I’ve been avoiding answering #9 (A)! I can think of a family member in that cycle, but doesn’t see it. The Gospel truly is transforming and yet it seems “we” can go a lifetime of Christian “duty” and miss the transformation. I especially saw so much of this in the religion I was raised–so much emphasis on works–and I see the enslavement, I want to free them–but they don’t see it. Just like the Pharisees who thought they didn’t need to be freed, oh it is hard…I don’t want to believe they are actually on the broad path and yet this Word is so clear.
Thanks for your notes on this sermon. I listened to it but had trouble taking notes that were clear. Maybe because he does talk fast. 🙂
I am seeing more and more how deceitful my thinking can get! I am seeing how my nature is like one of those shopping carts with a messed up wheel that is insistent on veering right or left when you want it to stay straight! Yet as I see more and more of God’s goodness to me despite my messed up cart-oh my.
I am still blown away that He saved a wretch like me and that because of Him and Him alone that I am His-I don’t know why He chose me-Everything I am is because of Him anyway-He created me. Yet He wanted me and I am His..I am a child of the King! He is GOD, and I am HIS. Why would I desire the approval or admonition of man?????? He has given me His complete favor-why would I ever be tempted to go like an animal in heat for man’s approval and act as if He isn’t here. That stems out of the depths of a wicked heart-who can know it. To do that to my God who gave up everything to have me-I hate my wicked heart! I don’t like it when I bend in that direction. Oh God I need you today-help me not to bend, and when I do come like a tidal wave to me-help me to remember..
Beautiful, Rebecca. Love your shopping cart and tidal wave imagery.
Oh that was good Rebecca! I had one of those carts at the grocery store just yesterday and I must have sad “sorry” to 10 people for nearly running into them, before I was done–just shows how destructive our ways are to all those around us too!
to take your picture even further…the whole time I kept thinking “I really need to get a better cart–this is ridiculous!” but my stubborn nature wanted to just hurry up and stay on my little way–it was sort of working, and like Kim said above, about paying the piper, sometimes I just keep at my way while it sort of works..and even in it ask ourselves, why am I doing this?!
Elizabeth-I do the same thing! I just keep pushing it straight and end up with my wrist in a lot of pain and even more tired from shopping. 😉 yes, it can be a bit like our nature, isn’t it? 🙂
Diane, Aren’t those things annoying-yet His Grace! 🙂
6. Give us your notes, and as you write them, think of how you might make these statements when you have “conversations” with unbelievers.
Incredible sermon. Wish everyone could hear it. At least every Christian. It might get a few people off the fence.
Jesus claimed he could set us free, spiritual freedom. Good religious people are just as much spiritual slavery as immoral people. The slavish relationship with God is based on “perform or be thrown out.” The son has an assurance of unconditional love. Jesus can give us a relationship with the Father based on love and intimacy, based on status of sonship. Second claim if you keep my word you will never see death – eternal life.
Religion that is constricting, stultifying, and narrow is not the relationship Jesus is talking about. Even many “Christians” are slaves to religion not to Jesus.
Abraham rejoiced to see My Day. He is talking about “The Day” of the prophets. He is referring to The Day of the Lord when the Lord comes back. Psalm 96. He will put down suffering, injustice. Jesus says he is salvation. His Day is The Day.
Before Abraham was, I Am. They exploded because they thought he was speaking blasphemy. I Am is the greatest, the highest expression of divine reference. It is a reference to Exodus 3 – Moses and the burning bush. A unique God in a world of gods – the uncaused cause, self-determined. I have no beginning. This is the most profound understanding to the heart – YHWH – God entered into a deep relationship with the Israelites. This was the holiest possible Word. Jesus not only says it but claims to be YHWH. I am the uncreated God, beginningless God.
He can’t just be seen as a great teacher. The listeners thought he had a demon in John 8 – either a shyster, or deranged. He is either demonic or he is divine. Jesus is Not the meek and mild person with a sweet unending smile, patting little children on their heads, unflappable.
These statements of Jesus divinity are NOT later insertions. Try to take them out. Nobody wants to call him demonic, but try to take the claims of Jesus’ divinity out. Jesus forgives sins. You can only do that if he is divine. The” son of God” claim – in ancient times the only son was equal with the Father. They knew what he meant in that claim. Matt 23, “I keep sending you prophets”. Luke 10 “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning”. The Cross should destroy your faith in God, unless he is God. It is cruelty or it is self-sacrifice if he is God.
“Crown me or kill me”. Jesus Christ claimed to be God. He constantly pushed and pushed until they got off the fence. He wanted that. He wants people to decide, “Either kill me or be so transformed by me that you can turn the world upside down.” Those are the only two logical places to be. At least the people who are angry with him have heard him and they might believe him. Look at the beauty of his life. Look at the beauty of his moral teaching. He was an egocentric teacher but the most incredible tender, strong, convictions, humility life. Could a demon teach like this, love like this? We need to throw ourselves at his feet. Take the limits off your allegiance. Jesus holds together the universe by the word of his power. Is this the kind of person you call your assistant? Say “God, command me”.
My thoughts concerning witness based on Keller’s sermon – We need to confront unbelievers with the hard truths of Jesus. The truths about Jesus are SO IMPORTANT that we need to be willing to risk our very lives to tell people about them. We need to fall at Jesus feet and say “command me” with no thought to our own life or safety. There is no other choice. I know that now in my head, and my heart is pounding. Will I accept this teaching or will I walk away? Like Peter, I think “where will I go, Lord? You have the words of eternal life.”
7. He also addresses how it is so easy to trust in religion instead of God. What notes do you have?
Religion that is constricting, stultifying, and narrow is not the relationship Jesus is talking about. Even many “Christians” are slaves to religion not to Jesus. This is very seriously concerning. I see so many people who attend our churches who are caught in this trap. I have often felt caught and frustrated by this narrow, constricting point of view of others. It is like being trapped in a boa constrictor’s grip. My approval idol keeps me there. Only Jesus sets me free. How do we help set other people free.
Lot of passion here, Diane. Is someone sharing evangelistically at the tea?
Yes, Dee. I appreciate your asking. I am giving a talk about how we are princesses in need of rescue and how Jesus is our Knight in Shining Armor. I am giving an overview in story form personalizing our fall from the garden of Eden, Satan as the Tyrant who deceives us and plunges us into darkness and Jesus who is the only One who can rescue us. I’m using Psalm 45 (among other Scriptures) and even giving an invitation to those who have never committed though the message applies to all, though not calling people to come to the front. I am trying to cover a lot of territory in a brief time. Hopefully the message will not take more than 15 minutes.
Praying for you now – today is the day of the tea?!
Yes, the Tea begins in 4 hours. I will be leaving for the church in less than an hour for final preparations. Thanks for your prayers.
Diane–eager to hear how the tea went! I’m sure you’re exhausted–at least I would be 😉
5. Read John 8:48-59 A. Trace the debate — the accusations of the Pharisees and the responses of Jesus.
48: accusation: you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
49-51 response “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
52-53 accusation: Who do you think you are?”
54-56 response: Jesus replied, “My glory means nothing. My Father, God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 accusation: “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” They see Him with earthly eyes as a man in his thirties, not old enough to know Abraham.
58 response: Jesus states His deity, He was before Abraham.
B. What are the implications of “Before Abraham was, I AM.” The implications are that He is claiming to not only have known Abraham but that He is greater than Abraham -their father. He is describing Himself in the same terms God described himself to Moses at the burning bush, “I AM” therefore He is stating His deity!
C. How did the Pharisees respond? Why, do you think? They picked up stones to stone him. This was blasphemy in their darkened moralistic bent hearts. I found this: Jesus also claimed to be God in John 10:30-33….”I and the Father are one.” Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” “We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”
3. Read John 8:31-38
They are trusting in the fact that they are “offspring” of Abraham. Yet what evidence does Jesus give that they are not saved?
they were planning to kill Jesus, and their behavior reflected their “father”
4. Read John 8:39-47
A. Our father is either Satan or God. Find characteristics of each family.
Satan: murders, lies, don’t believe Jesus, do not hear what God says
God: truth, love for Jesus, believe Jesus, hear what God says
B. Why does Jesus say they do not believe? (vs. 43) What does this mean?
They were unable to hear what Jesus said. I read the following at biblestudytools.com: “as they had no spiritual discerning and understanding of the doctrine of Christ, which showed them to be carnal, and natural men, and not regenerate ones, and the children of God; so they had an aversion to it, and could not bear to hear it.”
Their aversion to Jesus/not being able to bear His words was reflected in their behavior.
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller?
Yes!
4. Read John 8:39-47
A. The first thing I think of about Abraham is that he trusted God. These men rejected Christ and wanted to kill Him. Verse 40 says that Abraham loved truth. They wanted to murder the one who told them the truth. Verse 44 says that Satan has no truth in him. He is a liar through and through and a murderer.
B. They do not believe because they cannot listen to His word. I think it is because of their blindness and also because of their idolatry. It means that they will die in their sins because they will never believe.
C. Keller says the real hesitancy to Christ is moral rather than intellectual. People don’t want to give up what they think is freedom. Do you agree with Keller? I absolutely agree with Keller. In Jn 6:30-31 they were using Jesus to get more bread. It is what our idolatrous hearts do. We may believe but our hearts crave, and until we deal with the idolatry we will blindly use whatever will supply our need. There is some truth here that I cannot quite grasp. Can people come to Christ and not deal with idolatry? I don’t think so because they never see their need. Yet I do believe that Christians can be idolatrous and still be saved. Oh my. I pray that the Lord will speak to us.
Sweet sisters I have to tell you as I was listening to the second Tim Keller sermon I hear someone yell FIRE! Then the fire alarm starts going off. I run into get our little guy who was napping and got the girls out! I am so thankful my husband was home with bad eye allergies because he ran down to the fire that was raging behind our electrical box. It was spreading upward quickly and he extinguished it before it was too severe. I am so thankful he was home!! If he was not I could not have done that and kept the kids safe. We are out of our home for a week or two because of the repairs that need to be made. I would appreciate prayers AND am determined to listen to the rest of Keller! I was really moved in heart by the narrow path stuff. The enemy must have really wanted me to not hear it!! It had been a really hard day for me. Keller was a good break in it! I will listen to the rest soon! We will look at this as a new adventure AND I am so thankful that in my heart I really did not care about anything in that house. As long as we were safe it all could have burned. Nothing can take away my faith in Christ and His promises. It was refreshing to see that exposed today. May we grow closer as a family through it but most importantly become more like HIM and bring His name supreme glory.
Oh Angela, I’m SO thankful you’re all safe. I’ll be praying for you. (I’m very aware of fires because I know someone who had one a week ago and one of the family members died. So very very thankful you’re ok)
Oh wow Angela so happy all of you are ok. The house is repairable but lives not so easy sometimes. Will be praying for you.
Oh my Angela. Thankful too for you being okay.
Oh, my goodness, Angela. So thankful you are all OK. And, wow, it could have been a lot more serious. So glad your hubby was home to put out the fire. Yikes. But, like you say, this is another opportunity to see how God is taking care of you and to keep putting first things first. So beautiful to see you trusting in the Lord! Every trial and temptation is yet an opportunity to glorify the Lord, as Rick Warren says in “Purpose Driven Life”.
So grateful you the saftey of your dear family & that your husband was at home! Loving your attitude about the whole thing most of all!
Nothing like a real scare to help one see what is really important and all we have been blessed with.
Glad you are all safe, Angela! No accident your husband was home that day. And your attitude – wow!
Thanking God for His provision, protection and perfect timing!
Thankfully you are all ok! Praise the Lord!
Thanking Him for His protection over you all! WOW.
